A Story From The Past As a songwriter, if you can touch people and make them feel a little less alone in the world, then you’ve done your job. – Tom Cochrane Being a songwriter does not rely on an audience or other band members or a camera. I can just sit in a room and write songs. – Rick Springfield I consider myself to be an inept pianist, a bad singer and a merely competent songwriter. What I do, in my opinion, is by no means extraordinary. – Paul Sweeney I started being a songwriter pretending I could do it, and it turned out I could. –James Taylor My theory is this; I’m not a political songwriter. I’m an honest songwriter. –Billy Bragg
FOR three hours, the 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane battered Cape May with sustained winds of 85 mph and gusts reaching 100 mph. It came during high tide, producing waves as large as 50 feet. The majority of the destruction came from the tidal waves that crushed almost everything they hit. By the time the hurricane passed, it had destroyed the boardwalk, ripped apart a number of oceanfront businesses and severely damaged private properties along Beach Avenue. – Ben Miller

Random Fact Of The Week
PETE Townsend of The Who has – by most counts – smashed at least 87 guitars on stage, inlcuding 23 Fender Stratocasters, 21 Gibson SGs and 12 Gibson Les Paul Deluxes. Maybe he was just venting anger because the highest single The Who ever recorded peaked at #9.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J Do you people still read these? J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with the filet mignon and shrimp special that you MUST try. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editor
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
I
T’S REALLY difficult to believe that a new convention hall is going to be open by Memorial Day of 2012, despite the recent reassurances from Mayor Ed Mahaney. That’s just over a year away and right now we don’t even have a contractor to build it. This is because, as many of you will know, the city rejected all five bids that were presented. This is probably the worst-case scenario for the city... It’s being criticized by those who wanted little more than a rollerskating rink with a roof on it and by those who wanted an elaborate centerpiece of which Cape May could be proud. It’s difficult to avoid the conclusion that the administration has really muffed this up. It’s becoming clear, to us at least, that they tried to satisfy all of the people, and we all know how difficult that is. Even though a two-to-one majority of the public voted for a large convention hall more than two years ago, the council eventually gave into the pressure of the vocal minority and allowed the vision to be pecked at and pecked at until it became something that no one really approved of. The city also settled on a maximum expenditure of $10.5 million, when I’m sure they knew that was an unrealistic target, although I do remember one of their expert construction advisers standing up at a meeting and confidently saying the building could be completed for $10.5 million, so it’s hard to blame the city for following the advice of their hired expert. If memory serves, around $325,000 was budgeted for that man’s expertise, which, to a novice like me, doesn’t seem like money well spent.
Armed with that $10.5m budget, the city then decided to see what it could get for that money. Not much, it would seem. Definitely not the building it wanted, which in itself was a watered-down version of the original plan that, as I would like to repeat, two-thirds of the people voted for. Last year the city put together a wonderful presentation that showed how little extra the public would have to pay in taxes if the city appropriated another couple million bucks in order to build the new hall to the original specs, which would have brought the price tag up to around $13 million (though, if that number came from the city’s aforementioned construction expert then maybe that, too, was a touch optimistic). We had hoped that the city’s new council members would be persuaded by that presentation but alas they were not, most likely because of the vocal protests of a loosely organized group who generally like to say “no” to new projects. So what’s next? I can’t imagine any contractor would be remotely interested in taking the time and money to make a serious bid for this job, knowing how shaky the
whole premise seems, and knowing how impossible it now appears for the job to be done for the money budgeted. Maybe we will see yet another redesign, another watering-down of the design by the architects, who might just be wondering why on earth they got involved in this process unless, of course, they are happy to see the meter running on their time. A lot of the people have probably lost faith in the administration’s competence to get this job done right, so it’s hard to say what the next step is. It seems unlikely that the city can do an about-turn and introduce a bond ordinance that would give them the extra money that seems necessary to complete this job. In which case the only alternative seems that they will throw more money at the architect and ask for a smaller, cheaper building, further frustrating the two-thirds of the community who wanted a building that would enrich the lives of Cape May’s locals and its visitors and be the jewel in the crown of its tourism industry – the industry that ensures that everyone’s taxes remain at manageable levels. Good luck to Cape May City Council... They’re going to need it. YOU’LL notice a new column in this issue, “Chance Meetings” on page 29. We thought (as did some of you) that the paper could use some macho edge, and Chance provides the perfect counterpoint to Stella’s “Dating Column” (page 83). FINALLY, everyone make sure to get out this weekend and enjoy SingerSongwriter Cape May! Consult Phil Broder’s write-up on page 15 for the juicy details.

EAR four. Version 4.0. Quadrophonic. SingerSongwriter Cape May is back for the fourth time, bringing 150 musicians to nearly every bar and restaurant in town on March 25-26. You can pick one spot for the evening, or bounce around to follow your favorites. Here are some of mine... One of the very few people to play all four festivals is the son of a Princeton rabbi, Avi Wisnia. He’s a little jazz, some samba, a bit funk, a splash of Manilow. His original music is all sorts of fun, but be sure to demand his cover of the TLC classic “No Scrubs.” Get to Congress Hall’s Brown Room early on Friday night and find a seat near the piano for Avi’s set. On Saturday night, Jessica Smucker and Nick Deutsch are also safe bets for quality ivory tickling. Cape May’s most beautiful bartendress, Noreen at Cabanas, is a huge fan of Toad the Wet Sprocket. (And though I once got Toad’s lead singer to phone Noreen on Christmas, alas, we’re still just friends.) Luckily, from Cabanas’ bar she’ll have a

One of the great things about this festival is the variety of musical styles. If you’re a fan of boots, big belt buckles, and banjos, then Gregg Provo is your guy. His “Drinker’s Lament” has my vote to be Cape May’s new anthem. He’ll be closing out Aleathea’s on Saturday night. Aleathea’s will also host musicians involved with the New York Songwriter’s Circle. Reed Waddle won the Circle’s songwriting contest last year, and Gillian Grassie knows her way around a harp. Speaking of Gillian, there’s a gaggle of smart, funny, talented women playing this year. Everyone is talking about Lucy Kaplansky. She has a PhD in psychology and worked at a New York hospital before she became one of America’s hottest indie musicians. She’s a role model for a lot of up-and-comers, and has worked a lot with Suzanne Vega and Shawn Colvin. Catch her in Congress Hall’s ballroom on Friday . Name: Barry Tischler, Troubadour Extraordinaire Workplace: Pilot House Age: 66 Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA How long have you been here? This is my third year. Best thing about the job: Getting to play music is just a thrill. And the customers that come in are so very supportive, as well as the owners, Deirdre and Frank, and the managers. What do you recommend here? What’s not to recommend? They make a great Ketel One martini, they have excellent dinners and the best happy hour snacks around. What’s your other dream job? This is it! I really didn’t think it would ever happen. I was playing at the Tuna Club one night and the bartender, Debbie, told Deirdre about me. It just went from there. Favorite thing about Cape May: Definitely it would be the sense of community, both in the town and also among the local musicians – Open Mic on Friday nights here is a great example of that. Chance Meetings
S
Everett Chance wines and dines Cape May’s single ladies
INGLE White Male, gainfully employed, owns house and car, cooks, cleans, does laundry. Loves reading and music, playing with the dog, current events, traveling. Average looks, above average pastimes. Not an addict or alchoholic. Grandmother considers me a good catch. Seeks intelligent sane woman for dinner date. If interested, contact info@exitzero.us. This column is mostly Stella Dixon’s fault. If you read her estrogen-laced column regularly, you’d conclude that this area is populated with horrible men: men who treat women badly, men who cheat, men with serious emotional problems, men with mother issues... But all those men still manage to get somewhere with hotties like Stella, while the nice guys finish last. So here it is, Stella. We’re out here, us nice guys. We live our lives, do our things, and wonder why it’s so difficult to find good women. We bring home steady paychecks, keep our houses up, take our dogs to the park and wish that it were just a little easier to talk to that woman at the end of the bar.
You know who I’m talking about: the one who seems funny, dresses well but not like a fashion model, has a great smile, doesn’t spend all evening texting and is cute but not unapproachably so. Problem is, she’s there with a few friends, she hasn’t looked my way all night, and in the end, she really is unapproachable. For a nice guy, it’s a bad problem. For every wack-job guy Stella’s dated, I’ve gone out with an equally nut-case
woman. The one who asked me to help her fix up her apartment and then screamed at me for not doing a good enough job. The racist who thought I lived in a ghetto because I have black neighbors. The one who refused to visit my house but wouldn’t let me come to hers. The one who wanted me to choose between her and my dog. The one who said she had a great time on our two dates but doesn’t return calls anymore. This bad relationship thing goes both ways. In a stunning act of desperation, I’ve decided to ask Exit Zero to be my pimp. They’re going to set up the dates, nothing fancy, just dinner at local restaurants. If you’re interested in meeting me for dinner, respond to the email address above – we can share a meal and conversation. And after dinner, I’ll be writing about our date (changing names, of course). No kissing and telling, I promise (like I said: I’m a nice guy). What happens beyond that remains to be seen. But optimism seems to be pervasive here in Cape May – like Stella, I’m hopeful.

EVERY week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about music. This week’s winner is Amanda Troupe, 21, a hairdresser from Cape May Court House. We found Amanda and her cohorts on the Washington Street Mall. Here are her answers to our questions: Who’s the greatest singer of all time? Barry Manilow How many strings are on a guitar? Five [Ed. Note: It’s usually six.] How many keys are on a piano? 88

3/5 Mia D’Arco’s Birthday Party At Fleck’s Ice Cream
«
BUYING a gift for a child is usually a straightforward process; buy her a Barbie and buy him a GI Joe. Okay, so maybe we’re being a bit generic and sterotypical, but it’s only to make a point: Mia D’Arco is a kid with a great big heart. She didn’t want the usual toys for her fifth birthday – the altruistic birthday girl requested donations to Animal Outreach. The partygoers contributed either a can or bag of pet food instead of a present for the guest of honor. A girl after our own hearts! She is pictured at right with her friends at Fleck’s Ice Cream on Bayshore Road in Villas.

The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
I
AM still annoyed at those Beatles boys. I remember the day they were booked to appear in Cape May, headlining this city’s internationally famous music festival, Cape Maystock. Well, I say “internationally famous” because it was surely about to be that, had those shaggy-headed rapscallions bothered to turn up. We had already lost Elvis after he refused to accept that while in city boundaries he had to drop his fictitious military rank and hand his mustache over to the local police. And Jimi Hendrix’s bus had taken a wrong turn and ended up in Wildwood, where he was so traumatized by the sights he saw that he canceled all gigs for a year. All in all, a series of unfortunate events robbed us of a dozen major acts who had all been booked for that week in February of 1964. We had an arena built out at The Point (the remains of which can still be seen at low tide and are mistakenly identified as a “concrete ship”), and townsfolk had been making scones and cakes for the expected 300,000 visitors.
I had tens of thousands of T-shirts made, and indeed was sporting one myself, with the sleeves rolled higher still to show off my bulging muscles, toned to perfection in the weeks of erecting the stadium. The shirts all said “Cape Maystock ’64. No to The Man,” and a peace sign, to ref lect the emotions of those days. Well, we had pinned our last hopes on those Liverpudlian rogues appearing, and all was prepared: the roads into town had been cleared of shoebies, Cape May’s
airport had “Beatles Land Here” painted on the tarmac in 30-foot letters, and the local police had 300 gallons of paint and brushes on hand to draw “No Parking” boxes around out-of-state cars after they were left in what looked to be free spaces. The time came and went, there was not a single mop-topped scallywag to be seen, and the highways failed to fill with screaming young ladies. Or in fact screaming anythings, save for a couple of Ocean City folks who, alarmed by a passing car, were running around shrieking. Then I turned on a portable television we had on the f latbed of a stout pickup truck, and who should I see on the stage of that miserable Ed Sullivan Show? Oh yes, those f lighty young lads. Well, they may have had international fame and fortune, but all four were banned from Cape May, something they never ever got over, I have it on good authority. As for Sullivan, I refused ever to appear on his show, and I believe he died a broken man. Now, would anyone like to purchase a vintage T-shirt?

Customer Service
O
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
N A recent Saturday night I went to work feeling sorry for myself. As I vacuumed the dining room, I moped because yet another cute guy I’d been spending time with had either lost interest in me, I realized, or been abducted by aliens. And the former seemed a whole lot more likely. Feelings of loneliness are often made worse at work, and this night was no exception. I rolled my eyes as one couple celebrated their recent engagement with f lutes of Champagne, and I felt jealous of the woman on table two, whose date surprised her with tickets to a James Taylor concert. By the time the elderly gentleman with four-inch-long ears and a two-inch-long hearing aid limped his way into my section of the dining room, my pity-party was as in full swing. “Poor guy,” my coworkers said, “he’s eating all alone.” But I was too busy looking forward to crawling into bed and indulging my woe-is-me moment to notice. As the night wore on, I saw the elderly gentleman putting his head into his hands.
He barely touched his food, but he quickly polished off each glass of wine I brought. By the time I handed him his bill, he was slurring his words and having even greater trouble walking than he’d had sober. Other guests smirked as he clumsily made his way out of the dining room. I convinced the man to let our valet, Ted, drive him home. I decided that I would follow behind in my own car, so that I might bring Ted back to the restaurant. When we arrived, the valet and I helped the gentleman up the stairs to his house, a huge but cozy Cape May home decorated with Christmas lights. He invited the two of us inside, where he shared stories about

playing college basketball. Then he told us that he was all alone in this giant home because his wife was too sickly to live there any longer, and that he’d come to dinner at the restaurant after attending his best friend’s funeral. “My best friend,” he told us, smiling, “loved to have fun, so I tried my best to have fun today, too.” By the time Ted and I left, my heart was breaking for this friendly old man who was now all alone in his great big house. This guy, I realized, could probably teach me a thing or two about loneliness. That’s what most people don’t know about waiting tables, and something I forget myself from time to time. Every night, I grumble about the guests who’ve drank too much or tipped too little. When they’re finished eating, I bring them a paper check. But often, it’s the customers who end up offering me a more important kind of check – a reality check. And that is something that I wouldn’t trade – not for all the gratuities in Cape May or, even, for another phone call from that very cute guy.

The Answer Lady
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My girlfriend is awesome, but she’s got one insanely annoying habit. She sings with the car radio at the top of her lungs, and she has the worst singing voice EVER. She does it at home, too, but at least there I can escape. Help! – Wincing Dear Wincing Ah, yes – the utterly tone-deaf loved one – truly one of life’s crosses to bear. Does she sing the correct lyrics, at least, or is she off on her own tangent there, too? The Answer Lady’s own beloved sister is a major offender in this regard; you’ll have no trouble spotting us when we drive down the street together, as there is usually a pack of howling dogs racing along behind us. The worst thing about these erstwhile warblers is that their lack of pitch is usually matched only by their level of enthusiasm. Desper-
Wise answers to perplexing questions
ate situations call for desperate measures – enact an “Instrumental Music Only” policy in the car. One can’t sing along when there are no words. (Usually, that is. If she starts making up words to sing along with a cello, you must break up with her immediately.) If you don’t already have a collection of songs without words, Good Scents has a cool selection of all kinds of instrumental discs, from serene, spa-type music to classic jazz. PS: If this is the only ‘insanely annoying’ habit she has, you’re a lucky man.
Dear Answer Lady I’m a little bit country, he’s a little bit rock ‘n’ roll. Is there hope for us? – Marie Dear Marie As wonderful as it is to have lots in common with a significant other, the Answer Lady contends that it’s the major things – the “tent poles,” if you will – which support the relationship. These major things include, but are not limited to: where you will live, whether or not to have children (and how many), whether and how to worship, who drinks and who drives, hot or suicide wings at the C-View, whether golf is a sport, a recreational activity, or just plain torture, etc. On the other hand, you don’t necessarily want to be one of those supremely boring couples who have every last little thing in common, to the point of wearing matching outfits, drinking matching cocktails, driving similar cars, never leaving one another’s sides at parties… y-aw-n. Enjoying the same music or television programs is useful to be sure, but if those tent poles aren’t in place, you’ve just got a tent laying on the ground, haven’t you?

AT AGE six he was taking skating classes. By seven, he was playing ice hockey and by 18 he had accomplished his goal of scoring his fiftieth point. Senior Dan Castellucci resides in Erma with his parents, Diane and Joe, and his sisters Kimberly and Bethany. Castellucci loves the “fast-paced nature of the game.” He says the back and forth of it makes hockey exciting, because each player only has control of the puck for a few seconds. In addition to his passion for the game, he has a very close bond with his teammates. Due to the long season, the team spends “a lot of long bus rides together.” His team is what he says he’ll miss the most about ice hockey, especially his fellow seniors, who’ve been with him over the past four years. This past season marked a milestone when Castellucci got his fiftieth point. He currently plays the position of defender, so doesn’t get many opportunities to score points. Castellucci says “being able to achieve this will definitely be a memory I keep forever.” As for his ice hockey future, he’s already been in contact with coaches and plans to continue playing in college. Activity Of The Week
M
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Singer-Songwriter Cape May
USIC brings people together. We sing to celebrate, to soothe and to sleep. We whistle while we work and mark our milestones with music. Who hasn’t been brought to tears, happy or sad, by the perfect song at the perfect time? The songwriter becomes an invisible presence in our lives – at the movies, at the prom, and when we are alone in our rooms, singing into a hairbrush. This weekend, the songwriters will convene for SingerSongwriter of Cape May. Singer-Songwriter Cape May is a conference for people who make a living in the music industry. During the day, attendees learn about new technology, studio design, marketing and other practical skills. At night, they perform all over town, and music lovers enjoy an embarrassment of riches. Your biggest challenge will be deciding who to see. Take my advice – pick up a schedule at Congress Hall early in the day and map out your evening. Without a plan, you risk missing a favorite as you
wrangle your group from one venue to another. Singer/songwriters are part of an ancient tradition that evolved from poems set to music, often accompanied by a harp or lute. Most troubadors traveled when the laws allowed. “Gleemen” and minstrels were sometimes lumped with “rogues and sturdy beggars” and run out of town. Some singers enjoyed steady gigs as court musicians – their fortunes rose and fell

along with the nobles who hired them. The invention of printing allowed writers to earn money for the songs they wrote. By the 18th century, the study of music became common among the wealthy, and sheet music was frequently printed for the piano. Music at home meant that someone had to perform, and even Queen Victoria and Prince Albert loved to sing duets together. Professional performers got a boost with the advent of recorded music, which allowed the talentless among us to bring good music home. The radio brought great performances into our living rooms. Today, though we can fit a library of music in our pockets, there’s still nothing like seeing a live show – a singer with a guitar or a keyboard, sending beautiful music out over the tinkle of silverware. On March 25, Singer-Songwriter Cape May brings the music to town. There will be rock, folk and country beats; lyrics will be simple and complex; performers will be young and old, famous and unknown, alone and in groups. You will be entertained. Next week: How does your garden grow?

Bird Droppings
T
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
HIS column is not about the Pine Warbler that just showed up in Belleplain State Forest. It’s not about the Woodcock that are courting in every basketball-sized open plot in Cape May County. Nor is it about the Laughing Gulls that are arriving, or the Forster’s Terns that have been here for three weeks, or the Eastern Phoebe that arrived yesterday, or any number of other avian signs that winter is done and spring is on the doorstep. This column is about the Marsh Wren at the dog leg. “What,” you are thinking “would a bird do perched on a dog’s leg?” Wrong interpretation. I’m talking about the Marsh Wren that overwintered in the marsh beside the road that turns in the configuration of a “dog leg.” He’s still alive, and this column is dedicated to him. Marsh Wren. Cistothorus palustris. From the Greek "cistos," a shrub, and “thorus,” to run through. "Palustris" is Latin for marshy. In descriptive sum: a bird that likes to maneuver, deftly, through tight vegetation found in marshy areas, which pretty well
describes the antics of this small, brown, mostly secretive bird of marshy edge. If you have an older field guide you are probably going to find the bird listed as the “Long-billed Marsh Wren.” Same bird. New name. You need a new field guide. But that’s not the point of this article. My point is, as explained, that there was a Marsh Wren at the dog leg, and insofar

as it is still too early for Marsh Wren to be migrating it is apparent that this particular Marsh Wren made it through the winter. Which given the severity of this past winter is a real feat! Around 30 years ago a Marsh Wren overwintering in South Jersey was pretty nearly unheard of. Then... they began to turn up more and more. Why? Two reasons. First, because from the standpoint of getting your genes into the breeding pool, it makes strategic sense. The farther north a bird winters, the shorter it has to travel in order to get to the breeding ground. It has a head start! This, from the standpoint of getting the good territories, is a real advantage. The other reason is because over the last couple of decades, staying as far north as South Jersey was a good strategy. Winters were mild. Birds pushing the geographic envelope were able to survive through the winter. The last couple of winters were game

changers. Staying north was not a good strategy for Marsh Wrens. Last winter, out of six birds that tried to tough it out at the dog leg, none made it past January. This winter, out of five Marsh Wrens giving it the old college try, one made the grade. Frankly, I’m shocked. We had some heavy snows. We had some prolonged periods of cold. Marsh Wrens, as birds that forage at or near the ground, aren't built to handle much adverse winter weather. But this one made it. Tough wren. A genetic world-beater of a wren. Okay. So why write a column about this? Because more and more and every day I am impressed with the capacity that birds have to survive. You and me? It gets cold and we go inside or turn up the heater in the car. Wrens? They just hunker down in the reeds and do the best they can. We’re hungry and the pantry is bare? We drive to the store. Wrens are hungry and the ground is under two feet of snow? Tough. Live with it (or don’t). So here’s to the Marsh Wren. He made it. Against the odds. If you are choosing the
things you didn’t know you needed yet. While you are there, pick up the schedule of daily walks, a free birding map and checklist to get you started. Did you know that the Cape May Bird Observatory offers naturalist-led field trips throughout the year; everyday in spring and fall – sometimes twice a day! And don’t forget the newest books on and about birding and nature. Pick up a bargain from the used and vintage book selection, or some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise. Need a gift for a nature enthusiast friend or loved one but are clueless as to what they want or need? Pick up a gift card, redeemable at any of our New Jersey Audubon Centers throughout the state. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit www. BirdCapeMay.org, where birding is just a click away! Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

T
Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “Biutiful”
HERE’S a lot to compare and contrast in Biutiful, a film that was nominated for two Oscars this year. The characters are poignant yet dipped in misery, the plot turns are captivating yet somehow the story is sluggish, and the images are artistic yet disturbing. Okay, one could argue that the last contrast isn’t quite a contrast. This film was nominated for Best Foreign Film and Best Actor (Javier Bardem) at this year’s Oscars. Bardem won the Best Actor award at Cannes 2010 for his performance. Directed by Oscar-nominated Alejandro González Iñárritu (also nominated for Babel), the story is set in Barcelona, which just happens to be one of the few cities I’ve actually been to in Europe. When I travel to another country, I used to pride myself on taking the roads less traveled. Well, all the roads in this film were dark and lined with haunting shadows. Basically, I need to get out more when I'm abroad. Bardem is best known for his Oscarwinning performance as Anton Chigurh, the emotionless killing machine in the Coen
Bardem received an Oscar nomination for "Biutiful” Brothers’ 2007 film No Country for Old Men. His is a truly remarkable performance as a man finding that the road to redemption is sometimes marred by good intentions. Most of the main character’s time is spent in the underworld of the city, trying to make a living by advocating for the most disadvantaged
among the poor — going between crime bosses, crooked cops and all sorts of sinners. The supporting actors in this film are played beautifully (should I say biutifully?). The film is one of the most authentic I’ve seen in years — and that’s probably why it was so upsetting. Was anybody going to do anything honorable in this film? No. And even though there were truly brilliant moments in the film, in the end you are left weary from the journey. Try though I may, there really is no smooth segue to my next topic, so, the Cape May Summer Film Camp dates are set for this year! The dates are June 27 through July 1 with a screening of the films made by students on Friday night, July 1. Perfect for your middle or high school student who loves the movies or has ever thought of making one. Camp selections appear on our YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/ user/capemayfilm where we have more than 15,000 views! To learn more about the Film Camp, email capemayfilm@hotmail.com or call 609-884-6700.

The Dating Column
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on old Cape Island
I
ONCE interviewed for a job as a teacher. I prepared for the interview weeks in advance, going over every possible question I thought a high school principal might ask a prospective employee. I was ready to tell him my opinion on everything from teaching philosophies to classroom management to those little pepperoni pizzas they serve in the cafeteria on Friday afternoons. “Fire away,” I felt like saying as he ushered me into his office. “What makes you interesting?” he asked. I couldn’t think of a single thing to say. I panicked, I blurted something incoherent and then I kicked myself the entire ride home, embarrassed and still very much unemployed. I had not achieved the big O I’d come for: an occupation. This experience was reminiscent for me of every date I’ve ever been on; the moment I feel nervous, my intelligence shrivels along with my wit. Out of my comfort zone, I become as articulate as a toddler. I panic, I blurt something incoherent and then I kick myself the entire ride home, embarrassed and still very much single.
A wedding I recently attended with an adorable Cape May bachelor started out much the same way. While preparing for the reception in our hotel room, my phone started buzzing. I received a text from a mutual friend named Veronica. “I don’t understand this at all,” I said to my date. I proceeded to read the message to him. “Have fun at the wedding,” Veronica had written, “Have a big O.” I didn’t realize that "O" was short for
“orgasm” until my date looked at me with the same amount of pity the high school principal had given me. I kicked myself the entire way to the reception, where I ordered a rum and coke… or seven… to relax. The thing about drinking in order to calm your nerves is that it works, sometimes too well. A girl gets so relaxed after a couple of cocktails, she forgets that she doesn’t know how to dance. After an embarrassing attempt at the electric slide, I left my date by himself so that I could throw up in the bathroom. Then I knocked over a tree in the hotel lobby before stumbling, alone, to our room. When my date found me I was still in my dress, spread eagle on the bed with my wedding up-do half undone (or so he informed me the next morning). I made it nowhere near the big O at this wedding, unless the big O stands for outrageous embarrassment. But, like a job interview, some dates won’t go the way you hope. When this happens, panic, blurt something incoherent and kick yourself for being such a dope. Whatever you do, it’s best to leave the alcohol alone: the big O definitely does not stand for “obliterated.”
