The Police Blotter
PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL: Kimesa Smith was angry about slow service at Burger King. Clad in nothing but a bikini, she trashed the joint, even climbing on the counter. When questioned by police she said, “We tore that Burger King up. I don’t play no games.”
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past A collection of Yogi Berra-isms... “If the world was perfect, it wouldn’t be.” “You can observe a lot just by watching.” “You better cut the pizza in four pieces because I’m not hungry enough to eat six.” “A nickle ain’t worth a dime anymore.” “You should always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise, they won’t come to yours.” “If you come to a fork in the road, take it.” “I never said most of the things I said.” “If people don’t want to come out to the ball park, nobody’s gonna stop ‘em.” “Baseball is ninety-percent mental and the other half is physical.” “You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you are going, because you might not get there.” “It gets late early out there.” “It was impossible to get a conversation going, everybody was talking too much.” “Nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded.” “The future ain’t what it used to be.” “The other teams could make trouble for us if they win.” “It’s like deja vu all over again.” “There are some people who, if they don’t already know, you can’t tell ‘em.” “We have deep depth.” “We made too many wrong mistakes.” “Half the lies they tell me aren’t true.” “He hits from both sides of the plate: he’s amphibious.” “I wish I had an answer to that because I’m tired of answering that question.” “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.”

South Cape May was established in the vicinity of the current Cove Beach, with an extensive series of streets and properties. It was once a thriving district considered to be among the most desirable in the area. Following the hurricane of 1944, the borough of South Cape May was destroyed. Much of the town had washed away and after the hurricane subsided f lood waters remained. The few houses that could be salvaged were either farther inland or into Cape May city. – Ben Miller

Random Fact Of The Week
THE longest MLB game was between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago White Sox in 1984 and lasted eight hours and six minutes. Due to MLB rules forbidding innings to start after 1am, the game was postponed overnight. Chicago won in the 25th inning.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J Mmmm that cookie was delicious, huh? J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with fried rice and pork dumplings. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
A
S PHIL Broder so aptly put it in his Singer-Songwriter weekend preview in last week’s issue, having so much talent in town all at once is a good problem to have. Such was the case as Cape May once again hosted Singer-Songwriter weekend – the fourth, if you’re counting. And judging by the influx of people on the streets by midday on Friday, this one was yet another success. How could it not be with such names as Lucy Kaplansky and Pat DiNizio? We got a report from Singer-Songwriter of Cape May Director John Harris, who told us, “Our keynotes and featured performers were amazing. Lucy Kaplansky and Pat DiNizio helped to define our 2011 event. We added two new venues this year and showcased over 150 acts and artists. New music ruled the weekend in Cape May, and we’re already making plans for March 30 and 31, 2012.” So, don’t be surprised when the weekend rolls around next year. When asked to pick a favorite, Broder told us, "The place to be was the Mad Batter on Saturday night. Eleanor Dubinsky led it off strong, Jesse Terry was very solid, and then WOW, Peter Joseph and the Roaring Twenties brought the fun. I think Vickie Tryon bought a CD from each of them.” IF YOU’RE looking for something to do this weekend, we’ve got a couple of good ideas. There will be a beef and beer benefit for Dan Pratt at the Bayview in Wildwood Crest. Dan was born and raised in Lower Township, and lost his father, a North Wildwood police detective, at the tender age of eight. Now twenty-eight, Dan is
an avid surfer, and previously worked for several years at the South End Surf Shop. He also tended bar at the Lobster House prior to moving to San Diego, where he now lives with his brother, a Navy pilot, in pursuit of bigger waves and better snowboarding. On November 10, 2010, he was injured in an accident that left him with a broken neck, and an unfortunate mix-up left him uninsured at the time of the accident. The benefit is being held at The Bayview Inn in Wildwood Crest this Saturday, April 2nd, from 7-10pm. We spoke with Dan’s mother Marie recently. She works as an aide at Lower Cape May Regional Schools, and she hopes that readers, particularly younger ones, will take Dan’s story to heart, for she sees it as a cautionary tale. “Because Dan was gainfully employed at the time of the accident, he couldn’t qualify for charity care,” Marie tells us. “But because he was uninsured, due to an unfortunate mix-up at the time of the accident, the hospital bill was absolutely staggering. In fact, when he spoke with the people at the finance office of the hospital about working out some sort of payment
plan, they actually suggested instead that he file for bankruptcy. They told him it would be easier. Of course, that’s not something that he wanted to do at his age.” Marie reports that while Dan is doing well with his recovery and hopes to be back to his old self soon, it was a devastating injury, with about a six-month stretch of recovery. But she wants people to learn a couple of things from Dan’s experience. “I think young people tend to think they are indestructible, but in reality your life can change in an instant. We are just so grateful that Dan is doing better and on the road to recovery,” she said. “And it’s also so important for people to remember that all it takes is one trip to the hospital to ruin you financially, never mind all the follow-up care required for an injury like Dan’s.” Tickets for the Beef & Beer are $25, and can be purchased at the door or by calling 609-884-1861. Can’t make it to the benefit? You can send your donation, made payable to “Dan Pratt Benefit,” to 683 Crawford Road, Cape May, NJ 08204. Dan and his family thank you for your support. SPEAKING of young people, if you’re in town this weekend, be sure to pop into MagicBrain CyberCafe on Perry Street to check out the works of some budding artists from Wildwood Catholic. There will be about 50 acrylics and water color works displayed, created by 7th and 8th graders from all over Lower Township. Chrissy from MagicBrain tells us that the works will be displayed on Saturday, April 2nd, from 11:00am to 3:00pm. So stop by, grab a cup of your favorite MB beverage, and peruse the art. Sounds like a perfectly lovely way to spend a leisurely Saturday.

A user’s guide to Cape May City council meetings... by Kate Chadwick
E BRING you our User’s Guide to City Council meetings. Disclaimer: this is not meant to trivialize the importance of such meetings – we respect and appreciate the gravity of this and all government proceedings. But at the end of the day, we all put our pants on one leg at a time (some with more successful results than others), so please enjoy our lighthearted assessment. Meeting of Cape May City Council, Tuesday, March 22... 1:00 pm sharp! – Pledge of allegiance. 1:02 pm – Auditor Leon Costello is seated at the table, his back to the room, wearing a beige suit. He states that due to a 2-2 stalemate at the previous meeting, the budget would again be introduced today and that a public meeting will be held on April 20 to discuss it. As it stands, the budget will include a one-cent per $100 of assessed value tax increase. 1:03 pm – Clerk Diane Weldon
announces roll call of introduction of budget, starts with Councilmember Deanna Fiocca. 1:04 pm – Councilmember Fiocca, dressed in jeans, a fuchsia blouse, and black blazer, states that this is her first budget vote, that she is disheartened because it could have been introduced three weeks ago, and that workshops could have subsequently been held, and alludes to the dissension in the ranks by accusing senior council members of political game-playing. She reluctantly votes yes. 1:07 pm – Councilmember Bill Murray, wearing a light blue dress shirt, no tie, reads from a prepared statement about how it has been three weeks since council “inexplicably refused” publication of the budget being proposed today. He agrees that salaries and wages should not increase; that he is opposed to lay-offs, and there should be no cuts in fire and police. He also says the “statement that $145,202 could be saved in salary and benefits by not hiring 2 full-time firemen” is incorrect, as converting them
from part- to full-time would result in an adjustment of more like $30,000. 1:10 – Councilmember Murray says he is “almost at the end,” which elicits some appreciative chuckles. 1:10-1:13 pm – Councilmember Murray posits that the convention center marketing position, currently under consideration for $50k, be reduced to $25k, need not be a year-round position, and should be a commission rather than salaried position. He also suggests that the $13,000 allocated in “ceremony fees” (um, which are what, exactly?) included in the mayor and council salary segment of the budget be “examined closely.” He makes the excellent point that the beach tag office is sitting rent-free on prime beachfront real estate, and that it would be more fiscally intelligent manner to require them to pay market-value rent, or move the beach tag office to another location, perhaps the Franklin Street School [Editor’s note: Charge them? Aren’t the Beach

Taggers part of city government? Isn’t charging them just robbing Peter to pay Paul?] He suggests salary and benefits for new hires should also be addressed and adjusted according to the economy. He suggests reviewing policy regarding consultants, and says we should look for volunteers among the community (who, me?). He emphasizes that it’s imperative to involve the public in budget considerations. To that end, the proposed budget should be posted on city website. He votes yes. 1:14 pm – Councilmember Terri Swain (wearing darks slacks and a light blue Ace pullover) makes a very brief statement about how members can’t agree on everything, that this isn’t her first budget, and that she has studied it for hours. She remarks that the way she will vote has nothing to do withholding information back or being unwilling to work with other council members, and that she takes offense to those comments. She votes no. 1:15 pm – Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman, wearing a navy jacket, blue pinstripe shirt and solid blue tie, begins by stating that he will vote yes. He explains that he was not present for the previous meeting (and by extension being silently thrown under the bus by the others for the stalemate) because he was on vacation, and remarks that he will not apologize for it, that he had a great time and would like to go back. Wichterman expresses confusion about the mayor’s remarks, which he says he read in the newspaper, about having received no meaningful suggestions for reduction in the budget, and states that he had submitted a page and half of good suggestions to the mayor on 2/16, and then explains that council members do not report to the mayor. He suggests the
idea of revisiting police hours, and return to an 8/8/8 hour schedule, as opposed to the current 12/12 hours that they voted for back 2004, when they “were sold a bill of goods.” He mentions limiting police overtime to $100,000, as opposed to the current $202,000 figure. He wants to save the city money. He doesn’t agree with letting firemen go. He does vote yes. 1:18 pm – Mayor Ed Mahaney (clad in a pale olive-colored suit) begins by stating that he will be voting no. He asserts he is not going to get into political discussions, because people know that he conducts himself in an open and transparent manner, and that differing opinions happen and should be discussed civilly. He is just interested in what’s best for the community, and that while he could also take umbrage with what’s been expressed here, if one can’t take the stress of making decisions in a public forum then one “shouldn’t be sitting up here.” He stands behind the documents he submitted on 2/18 and again on 3/1. He is glad that he’s got everyone’s attention by doing this, so that they can now sit down and work together on this budget. He further states that his reasons for voting no are twofold: 1 – the budget has a 2-cent tax increase, and even though he credits Mr. MacLeod with accomplishing the “herculean task” of getting it down to a 1-cent tax increase, he believes that a budget can be assembled with no tax increases in these tough economic times; and 2 – he doesn’t think the current budget under consideration takes into account the city’s needs in the future. 1:20 pm – Budget introduction passes 3-2. 1:20 pm – Leon Costello is thanked for his attendance and dismissed (not literally). 1:22 pm – Councilmember Murray requests that the

Inside City Hall ? From Page 20 budget be posted on the city’s website and that hard copies be made available in the library and at City Hall. 1:24 pm – City Manager Bruce MacLeod - introduces Ordinance #228-2011 - 3 new classifications of mercantile licenses, to the tune of $175, for lawn-cutting, property maintenance and housecleaning services, respectively. (The smattering of attendees who appeared to be landscaping professionals in the room snapped to attention at this juncture.) 1:27 pm – Nels Johnson, attired in work pants and an olive windbreaker, takes the podium. He states that he represents numerous landscapers in the area who weren’t able to be present, and that he wanted to stress that they haven’t raised their rates in over four years due to the economy, they already pay a state fee, gas is heading to $4 a gallon, and that passage of this ordinance will open the possibility of similar fees being enacted in West Cape May, the Point, Lower, Middle, etc. He further stated that these fees could easily amount to around $1000, and the ‘scapers will have no choice but to pass these fees on to their customers, thereby defeating council’s stated purpose of saving the taxpayers money.
1:28 - Public Session closed. 1:29 pm – Councilmember Fiocca asks Mr. MacLeod how this ordinance will be enforced, given that the codes officials end their day at 4:00 pm, and landscapers often work into the evening hours in the extra light provided by the warmer months. MacLeod responds that flextime will allow for one enforcement officer to work weekends (which doesn’t definitively answer the question about evening work, but whatever). Fiocca then questions whether the whole $175 goes into city coffers, and MacLeod confirms that it does. 1:31 pm – An audience member raises her hand and attempts to ask a question, but is told by Mayor Mahaney that the public portion of the dialogue is closed. Councilmember Murray questions how they arrived at the $175 figure. MacLeod says it’s been five to six years since various fees have been revisited. Murray again questions this; MacLeod crankily defends the fees by reiterating that they are annual; Murray does not appear happy. 1:36 pm – Deputy Mayor Wichterman jumps in to remind everyone that this will not affect this year’s budget. He also reminds us that there are plenty of single family homes renting that likely do not have mercantile licenses that should be watched more closely. 1:37 pm – roll call on the vote: Fiocca – NO; Murray – NO; Swain – YES; Wichterman – YES; Mahaney – YES. 1:38 pm – All contractors in the room get out of their chairs and leave the room, amid some low grumbling, except for one gentleman, who wished council great good luck in enforcing the ordinance over his shoulder on the way out. 1:40 pm – Mayor Mahaney remarks that the contractors who just left in a huff are upset, but professionals nonetheless.

Inside City Hall ? From Page 22 1:41 pm – Ordinance 2292011 is introduced regarding the issue of non-profit raffles by Deputy Mayor Wichterman, who explains that currently the non-profits are charged $20 for each thousand dollars of a given raffle prize; uses Star of the Sea’s annual Mercedes raffle as an example. He says the city collects this money “because they can,” and that it should be done away with because the money the city collects is (on the one hand) disproportionately high in proportion to the amount of paperwork involved; and (on the other hand) disproportionately small in the grand, budget-world scheme of things. (Que?) 1:42 pm – Public session opened. 1:42 pm – Former mayor Jerry Gaffney, looking dapper in jeans, a gray turtleneck, and a light blue pullover, steps to the podium, expressing disapproval of the ordinance. He believes it’s foolish to remove any stream of revenue from the city coffers, no matter how small, in the present economy and with a one-cent tax increase on the table. He admits that he “hustles tickets” for the Star of the Sea Mercedes, but that this is not the time to turn down revenue. He urges council to vote no on this ordinance. He questions how much money the ordinance brought in last year, and Wichterman responds “$1,780.” Mr. Gaffney points out that perhaps council should not have purchased the $7,000 worth of 15 new leather chairs they are sitting on. A minor spat regarding the chairs ensues. 1:45 pm – Bob Heavey steps forward, wearing olive pants, a yellow shirt, patterned tie, and navy windbreaker, and asks that the ordinance be passed, because the charities in question should be allowed to keep any and all money they collect.
He said it is not money “lost” to the city, it’s simply money “not collected.” 1:46 pm - Mahaney closes the public portion of the discussion. 1:47 pm – Wichterman expounds on the functions of the Kiwanis Club and reiterates that the amount collected for the city is negligible. 1:50 pm – roll call on the vote: Fiocca – YES; Murray – YES; Swain – YES; Wichterman – YES; Mahaney – NO (“it’s not the money, it’s the principle”). In the interest of your sanity and ours, only highlights will be featured from here on: 1:51 pm – introduction of 230-2011, a bond ordinance for water and sewer for 1.35 million; MacLeod explains; no public response; roll call as follows: Fiocca – YES; Murray – YES; Swain – YES: Wichterman – YES; Mahaney – YES. 1:55 pm – introduction of 2301-2011, a bond ordinance for beach improvement; a question from the public by a hat-less Jay Schatz (jeans, beige shirt, and a cool navy and beige checked hooded jacket) regarding what kind of improvements will be made for that kind of money, and whether or not there is any money available without having to float a bond; response by Mr MacLeod detailing improvements, and that a system is in place to retire the bonds to prevent them from becoming long-term debt. Mr. Schatz also remarks on the issue of the beach tag office paying rent, which he agrees is a good idea. Next up, Jim Wyatt (jeans, navy shirt, navy jacket) who discusses the National Lifeguard Competition in August, and questions whether we are prepared for the influx of people. MacLeod explains that the cost of this does not come out of capital funds, but is an operating cost and shared with the Lifeguard Association. Mr.

Announcing Cape May’s Employee Of The Week PHOTOGRAPH BY DANIELLE O’NEAL
You don’t always get what you pay for...
Sometimes you get more!
609-889-2000
Name: Jimmy Gonzalez, Bartender and all-around Team Player. Workplace: Hemingway’s at the Grand Hotel. Age: 28. Hometown: Originally from Glenolden, PA, currently lives in Wildwood. How long have you worked here? Almost two years now. Best thing about the job? Definitely my coworkers and the work environment here. We’re a really close-knit bunch. What do you recommend here? For dinner, I would recommend the Veal Maryland. And the best cocktail is the Foxy Lady, made with coconut rum, banana, and a couple of other ingredients I can’t share with you. What’s your OTHER dream job? I’d really like to be in the Coast Guard, actually. I like the military, and I like maritime stuff. Favorite thing about Cape May? The locals, for sure. The visitors are great, too, but the locals are the best. [Editor’s Note: “Uncle Larry” seated at the bar, seconded that.] Interview by Kate Chadwick

Inside City Hall ? From Page 26 Wyatt also mentions that it would be useful if beach tag checkers would stay later, which Mr. MacLeod, after reminding Mr. Wyatt that the issue is not relative to the discussion at hand, answers that the issue has been addressed before and that it’s not financially feasible to have the beach taggers stay until dark. Public discussion portion closed; roll call as follows: all vote yes. 2:00-2:10 pm – intro of 232-2011, general capitalization; all vote yes. Also discussion of resolutions 5503-2011; resolutions 56-60, 61, 62, 63, 64, and then Clerk Diane Weldon accepted the minutes and previous reports. Cue crickets here. 2:15 pm – Councilmember Fiocca addresses the possibility of signage being erected to discourage drivers from talking on cell phones (although she says nothing about pedestrians, and with all this street work going on….we’re just sayin’); Mr. MacLeod says he will look into it; Attorney Monzo says that enacting an ordinance would not be necessary, as it would simply be a matter of enforcing the law. 2:17 pm – Mayor Mahaney congratulates Betty Steger, who was seated in the
audience, for the 77 years of service the combined generations of her family have given Cape May, and for her ability to match wits with the other bidders in the recent beach concession bid – she apparently kicked butt. MacLeod advises that discounted beach tag sales ends 3/31 and that the city is on a par with sales from last year. 2:18 pm – Jim Wyatt notes that there has been a spate of accidents, missing children, etc., in the past two years, and that when considering the budget, council must
keep public safety paramount. Bob Heavey also addresses council on the same issue, pleading that no cuts are made in fire and police. Mr. Heavey is a retired fireman, and presents some rather graphic drawings as evidence of what can happen to a person in a fire (although he warned of their graphic nature in advance, bless him). 2:32 pm – Jerry Gaffney once again addresses council and implores them to sharpen those pencils and get the budget down to a no-cent increase. He stresses his support for Mayor Mahaney. 2:36 pm – Linda Steenrod, wearing jeans and a fleece jacket, raises a question as to whether if a neighbor were to clean for her while she’s away, said neighbor would need a mercantile license. Mr. MacLeod states that only if the neighbor is holding herself out publicly as a cleaner would a license be required. 2:41 pm – Bernie Haas addresses the council on two points: 1 – that any house rentals on his website are required to prove they have a mercantile license; and 2 – he questions whether a lawsuit has been filed by Franks regarding the Beach Theater. He is told by Attorney Monzo that it has. 2:43 pm – Motion to adjourn – everyone out.

Chance Meetings
F
Everett Chance wines and dines Cape May’s single ladies
OOD and I have a tenuous relationship. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love food, and food loves me. We’ve been together through good times and bad, at home and on the road, in romantic spots like Paris and New Orleans. It’s making it a threesome that causes problems. More often than not, when I involve a woman with food, you might as well just stick a fork in me. I’m done. It started with red-haired Colleen in college. It took all semester to work up the nerve to ask her out, and she agreed to accompany me to a fancy banquet featuring wild game. We got to the head of the buffet line, she looked down at a table full of venison, her eyebrows reared up, and she moaned, “They had such big brown eyes.” No deer for this dear, stick a fork in me, the evening is done. Trying to cook dinner for a woman once, I set the chicken aflame, bringing out the fire department. Firemen on the first date, there was no second. I’ve had relationships crash and burn over who had rights to the doggie bag of
leftovers. I’ve dealt with a woman who was upset because she didn’t like my choice of restaurant despite telling me she wasn’t hungry and it didn’t matter where we ate. I’d also like to forget that Salisbury steak incident with my vegetarian prom date. Something about bringing me, food and an attractive woman together throws the whole universe out of whack. But Cape May is going to change that. It’s a town top heavy with trattorias,
burdened with bistros, crammed with cafes. The odds are in my favor. Maybe there’s a chef or two on my side. Surely the busboys have my back. Done properly, a fine meal is the basis for a good time and a lasting memory. Done improperly, well, if everyone maintains a sense of humor you could wind up with the same result. Face it, which do you remember better: the average run-of-the-mill Thanksgiving, or the one where the turkey was still frozen, the kids threw cranberries at each other, and the dog scarfed down the mashed potatoes? There’s potential in disaster. Without the rocks in its bed, the stream would have no song. So break bread with me, won’t you? It’s quite simple: send an e-mail to info@ exitzero.us, I’ll contact you, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine establishments. Afterwards I’ll write all about it. (Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t.) Maybe you’re the woman who can successfully insert herself into my love affair with food. I’m up for that threesome if you are.

EVERY week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about music. This week’s winner is Fran Hendrick, 60, a food service director from West Chester, PA. We found Fran and her husband on the Washington Street Mall. Here are her answers to our questions: Who’s going to win the World Series this year? Phillies Is it wrong that they have so many great pitchers? NO! Who holds the record for the most home runs in history? Barry Bonds Fran wins a $50 gift certificate to Tisha’s for answering our questions. PHOTOGRAPH BY DANIELLE O’NEAL

«
SAINT BALDRICK’S began back in 2000, when three insurance executives opted to raise money for childhood cancer by shaving their heads during the office’s St. Patrick’s Day party. Baldrick’s is now the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising program for childhood cancer research. Lower Cape May Regional High School teachers, staff and students got into the act and shaved some heads during their 2nd Annual St. Baldrick’s fundraiser with help from local barbers and stylists from John the Barber, Yankee Clippers, Nine Salon and Spa, and The Cutting Edge. The event raised a total of $13,622. PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

The Old Fogey
B
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ASEBALL is not what it once was. Where is the excitement, the danger, the bloodshed? I invented the game when it rained one weekend in Cape May during my Hell’s Angels airmen/ motorcycle reunion and we could not, as planned, drive up to Wildwood firing our Colt 45s in the air (amusements were simpler then, and we took pleasure in the moment. Having had to hand back our Mustangs when the war was over, we transferred our mayhem to two wheels). Well, we’d drank all the bars dry the previous night, and really, what with two dozen strapping young ex-fighter pilots to entertain, options were limited if you ruled out arson, anarchy or dancing (the former two I had forbade, the last one was a little unseemly in broad daylight with just us menfolks, even though we sported a very high proportion of leather waistcoats, bare chests and big ‘staches). So, I hit upon the idea when I saw the two cases of contraband I had taken off the lads upon their arrival: one full of 100 per
cent proof spirits, the other hand grenades. I already had a bat in the shape of a long knobkerry I employed to bring order to the Ugly Mug on St Patrick’s Day, and it took but a moment to scuff a diamond (it was meant to be a square but my hangover had me off balance) and make up rules. To start, the grenades had the pins in, then Mad Dog Archie pointed out that it was irresponsible to leave unexploded ordnance lying around where ladies might stumble upon it and, thinking it a bauble,
make it into a brooch or earring. So we removed the pin right before pitching (which is why the ball is thrown so fast in baseball – no-one wanted it too close to them) and away we went. I admit the plan had some f laws – Jock “Bawbag” McPhee (from Philly) tended to hit the grenade so far that we blew the side off Uncle Bill’s Pancake House, holed a fishing boat en route to The Point and shattered part of the Cape May Crystal Palace. By and large, though, the sport gathered an appreciative crowd, who stood 300 feet back and applauded politely whenever someone was blown up. The scoring was rough, of course, as shrapnel injuries and temporary deafness tended to make it hard to count properly, but by and large, the ten of us who walked away after the match agreed we’d had a grand old time of it. And the crowd – those not attending the local hospital as a result of a totally misaimed pitch by Ernie Hemingway (he claimed it was misaimed, at least… with Ernie you never could tell) gave a standing – indeed running-away – ovation at the end.

Customer Service
W
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
HEN I was in elementary school, my favorite teacher was a plump woman by the name of Mrs. Cook. She told the students in my class that there’s no such thing as a stupid question. Mrs. Cooke, I now realize, never worked in a restaurant. While it may be true that all questions are valid in the world of lunchboxes and letter people, this logic does not translate to the dining room. Every shift that I work, without fail, a customer will ask me just how big the salad is. The salad, I try to explain diplomatically, is salad-sized. Just as the chicken breast is roughly the size of a chicken breast. Throughout the night, I often don’t look like I’m working at all but, rather, playing in a game of charades. Table after table, I mime for my portion size-obsessed guests the exact dimensions of a pork chop or the circumference of a soup bowl. Even more frustrating is when folks want to know whether a particular dish will be enough to fill them up. “No, ma’am,”
I consider saying, “you look as though you could woof down WAY more than a few shrimp.” It is impossible for me to know what it takes for a given guest to feel satisfied. It is equally impossible for me to know what, exactly, a guest will consider “good.” And yet, every day, someone asks me if the fish/meat/pasta dish is any good. “Nah,” I feel like saying, just once, “the food here is terrible!” But I don’t say this, of course. I tell my customers just the opposite. It’s good, dear guests. It’s all good. Good, good, good. I’m not allowed to say otherwise. And, with all due respect, on this topic I’d like to coin a phrase that I learned
Not Your Everyday Hallmark Shop Warm up with our new Bean Pod Soy Candles & Himalayan Salt Lamps New Willow Tree Collection Full Line of Cards, Souvenirs, Collectibles & Gifts
as a student in Mrs. Cook’s second grade class: no duh, dear guests. But, if a patron really wants to know my opinion on which of two dishes is better, I will give it to him. I once told a man that our whole fish was the most delicious thing I’d eaten in years, because it was. Two bites in, he told me he’d never been more disgusted by a dinner in his entire life. Of course, on his way out of the restaurant, he thought it a bright idea to pee on a parking meter, so I like to think my opinion counts for a bit more than his. The bottom line is that, in our society, certain questions are off-limits. It’s considered impolite to ask a person for age or weight or number of sexual partners. So why shouldn’t silly restaurant questions be dubbed equally taboo? If you promise never to ask how many calories are in the cheesecake, why there’s no f lounder on the menu, or if I mind splitting one check thirteen different ways, I promise I’ll take good care of you… And I’ll never, under any circumstances, ask whether the apron I wear makes my butt look big

It’s Kelly green (natch), and sports a bright red shamrock as an extra shot of luck for your favorite team. $42.95, and 47.95 for XXL. 401 Lafayette Street, 609-884-4484. www.allrishimports.com

You can also buy the ball separately – might as well pick up a couple, in case you knock a few out of the park. $8.78 for the set, 1.99 for the ball alone. 510 Washington Street Mall, 609-884-0442.
Stand out from the sea of team hats at your next ball game and declare your loyalty to Team Exit Zero. Or, show the world that you are maniacal in your devotion to Cape May with a Cape Mayniac cap. The Answer Lady
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I’m interested in a girl who is an indoors/restaurant/art gallery type, and I’m an outdoors/boating/fishing kind of guy. We’re still getting to know each other, so I don’t want to drag her out on a fishing boat or anything – at least not yet. I need date ideas! – Outdoor Guy Dear Guy The Answer Lady is a big-time indoors girl, but she certainly digs baseball. Take your girl to a LCMR High School Caper Tigers game. She’ll find it endearing that you take an interest in supporting the local high school team. Plus, it’s free, it’s fun, and you’ll be able to chat while keeping an eye on the action and enjoying the fresh air. If things go really well, you can upgrade your next date to a Phillies game, or heaven forbid, a Mets or Yankees game. The hot dogs

will cost more, but it should be worth it. Dear Answer Lady I want to get a tattoo, but my wife is violently opposed. I figure I’m a grown man and if I want some ink I can get it. How can I get her to see this my way? – Needle Ready Dear Ready The phrase “violently opposed” leaps off the page at the Answer Lady. If your wife wanted to do something to which you were “violently opposed,” wouldn’t you hope she’d abandon the idea?
The Answer Lady feels your wife’s pain, as her own husband had one tattoo when they married, and now has six of them. Apparently they’re up there with Doritos on the addiction scale (or Three Musketeers, in the Answer Lady’s case). You may be able to talk her into one, but if this becomes a slippery slope, you could be S.O.L. Something else to keep in mind: recently the Answer Lady was standing in line at the grocery store behind a woman of about sixty, who sported several visible tattoos. They may have looked just swell when she acquired them thirty-odd years ago, but they’re not looking too terrific right about now. One changes one’s hairstyles, clothing, jewelry and makeup as one ages, and for good reason. Tattoos are forever. HOWEVER, having said all that, if you still feel compelled to ink yourself permanently, try to keep it small (perhaps a Phillies “P”?), out of sight (no face or neck or anything), and for heaven’s sake – go to the pros over at Cohwen’s Ink Emporium. They ALWAYS do a professional job and do it at a great price.

The Cape May Crossword
None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Dan Mathers SO YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: Major League Baseball. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. ACROSS 3. They are the other team that calls New York home. 5. This team was once owned by future president George W. Bush. 8. Their mascot is an offensively red character named Chief Wahoo. 10. They are the only team named after a land formation. 12. Considering where they’re from, this team’s name is necessarily patriotic. 13. They are the only team who play their home games outside the United States. 15. While other teams are named after colored garments, this team is just a color. 17. This team’s current colors are Navy Blue, Northwest Green and Metallic Silver. 18. Translated into English, this team’s name is “Fathers.” 19. They are the more colorful of the two teams playing ball in Chicago. 21. Like the city’s much more successful football team, they wear black and gold.
Are you a phan? 18 Down.
22. This team’s name could follow the words sting, manta or sun. 24. They are commonly referred to simply as the single, gothic letter shown on their logo. 25. They called Brooklyn home from 1883 to 1958 before moving westward. 26. Don’t confuse them with the like-named team from Arizona, that’s the wrong sport. DOWN 1. They have won more games than any other North American professional sports team. 2. Like siblings who share a birthdate. 3. They won the first of their two World Series only four years after being established. 4. Like Elizabeth, Charles, Harry, William and (soon enough) Kate. 6. They won the National League Eastern Division title 14 consecutive times from ‘91-’05. 7. Their name references the city’s role at the center of the US astronaut program.
9. They are one of only three teams representing whole states, not just cities. 11. Often called the lovable losers, they have not won the World Series in 102 years. 14. They lead the league in both revenue and titles won. 16. This team derives its name from the city’s association with Miller Brewing Company. 18. I’m sure we can all agree that they’re simply the best team in baseball. 20. This team has the great distinction of playing their home games in the historic Camden Yards. 23. One of four clubs located in their original city, they wear blue, white and orange. 24. Translate the name of their city into English, and it’s the same as the team’s name. Know which Major League Baseball team is not represented in this crossword? Email the answer to dan@exitzero.us with the subject line “Don’t Forget!” for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate.

Activity Of The Week
P
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Gardening
ATIENCE, gardeners. It’s almost time! Before you go out and get your hands dirty, sit down and do some planning for your little patch of earth. Spend a little more time with gardening catalogues, graph paper and shopping lists, and your garden can have a banner year. Victorians regarded gardening as an act of charity. Landowners were told that creating gardens in the city would decrease unrest, including public drunkenness, by adding beauty. Believers convinced a reluctant Queen Victoria to open Kew Gardens to the public in 1841, in the hope that this bit of nature would cheer the residents of sooty, polluted London. And, as anyone whose mood has been lifted by a lovely Cape May garden knows, it works. Of course, working in the garden is a lot of fun for its own sake. The challenge is to wait before digging in. Working while the soil is too wet can damage tiny roots. Grab a bit of of soil - if you can form a ball, it’s still too wet. Wait until it crumbles. Purists advise against even walking in your garden until it has had some time to drain.
While you’re waiting, plan a garden that will be easier to enjoy once the springtime thrill is gone. For example, add more vegetables so that you have a tangible reward for your hard work. Or, consider reducing the size of your lawn. Lawns don’t do well in Cape May without a lot of water and work, and adding a bed for native plants can reduce the need for both. Native plants like milkweed, for the monarchs, and purple coneflower, for the

finches, thrive with little work, and they provide sustenance to our winged friends. If you’re looking for inspiration, check out the Michael Shouvlin Water Conservation Garden on Madison Avenue. Conveniently, the Nature Center sells native plants. Order by April 30 for pickup in late May. If you really can’t wait to get your hands dirty, start seedlings to be transplanted, or create a container garden. Try Swain’s or Cape Island Gardens for supplies. You can create a kitchen planter and have fresh herbs for months, create a beautiful pot for your porch, or set up a window box to enjoy inside and out. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, there is truth in the old proverb “Year of snow, crops will grow.” Snow insulates the soil from extreme cold, and adds moisture to sleeping plants. Of course, too much snow can cause broken branches and other damage, but let’s focus on the positive - no sense holding a grudge against Mother Nature. Don’t have a green thumb? Thank the neighbor who does. Next week: Ahh...the Spa

Bird Droppings
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
T
HIS column is for Pat. Pat, from Maryland, who was the first (and I might add only) person to show up for the first Monday Morning Meadows bird walk of the year on the 21st of March. There were five leaders (plus me, honorary leader). And there was Pat. One participant is all it takes to make a quorum so the walk went at 7:30am as scheduled. Okay, so maybe we left at 7:35am; we dawdled a bit hoping someone else might show up. And maybe Pat had to catch up with us. It’s tough judging time travel on a Monday morning commute between the Washington DC area and Cape May. Be that as it may, she was first. The walk was the first Monday Morning Meadows Walk of the year. There will be many more to follow (right into November), but first in the hearts of first comers is the very first… I forgot to tell you it rained, didn’t I? Poured, actually. Small wonder you were losing interest in this article. It started raining while we were all the way at the end
of the east path so we were at the furthest point from our cars. Hard rain. Big drops. Wind driven. Pat? Well, she had on a rain jacket. The rest of us were dressed head to foot in water impervious synthetics. Did I mention it was also a cold rain? Thought not. Yep. It’s the kind of weather condition

that gives birders a bad name. The kind of stuff other people don’t go out in, but we most certainly do. Cape May is no place for wimpy birders. Neither rain, nor sleet, nor.... What did we see? Ducks of course. What kind of birds do you think go out in the rain? Mallards, Black Duck, Northern Pintail, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Black Scoter... And of course, Canada Goose. And equally of course, Mute Swan. We also saw Red-throated Loon, Longtailed Duck, scores of Northern Gannet, Greater Yellowlegs, Pine Warbler, Wilson’s Snipe, Tree Swallows.... All this and more in just one hour's time. We called the walk on account of rain. Doesn’t happen often but this time it seemed prudent. The clap of thunder might have had something to do with this.

But through it all (or at least the final fifty minutes of it), Pat held her own. Trooper to the end. Then she hustled over to the Cape May Bird Observatory and bought a brand spanking new Swarovski spotting scope and Gitzo tripod. After watching me pour the water out of the objective lens of my spotting scope, she got the idea that waterproof was an important (albeit expensive) quality. She didn’t cut corners on the tripod or tripod head, either. There is nothing like adverse conditions to convince a person to buy quality equipment. She took her time with her purchase. There were lots of makes and models to consider. She took so much time that she was nearly dry by the time she stood at the cash register, and for a few glorious seconds became the planets newest and happiest Swarovski HD 65mm spotting scope owner. Yep. Another first place finish for Pat! Interested in learning more about birding? Head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point
there, pick up the schedule of daily walks, a free birding map and checklist to get you started. Did you know that the Cape May Bird Observatory offers naturalist-led field trips throughout the year; everyday in spring and fall – sometimes twice a day! And don’t forget the newest books on and about birding and nature. Pick up a bargain from the used and vintage book selection, or some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise. Need a gift for a nature enthusiast friend or loved one but are clueless as to what they want or need? Pick up a gift card, redeemable at any of our New Jersey Audubon Centers throughout the state. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit www.BirdCapeMay. org, where birding is just a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Movie Column
A
Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “Kill the Irishman”
H, THE age-old question: How many people can you blow up before it becomes gratuitous? Kill the Irishman tells the true story of Daniel Greene (Ray Stevenson), an Irish dock worker who becomes union boss, then thug, then even worse thug. Stevenson executes the role of sinner/saint, and I guess that is how director Jonathan Hensleigh wants us to see Greene. Sure, maybe the word “executes” isn’t the best choice. I didn’t want to report in this review that this film is just another mob movie. Well, it is but it’s maybe a notch above most mobster films. Greene rose to power in the 1970s, and the film captures the feel of the 70s mostly through cars. Then, those cars are blown up, along with a great supporting cast, namely Christopher Walken and Vincent D’onofrio (from Law and Order fame). Yep. All blown up. Does anyone remember Second City TV, when John Candy was one of the performers (this goes way back)? There was a skit where two hicks review movies—and they give the best reviews to those films where “things blowed up real good.” This film would have won their
Ray Stevenson in the role of Daniel Greene equivalent to an Academy Award. Val Kilmer plays Joe Manditski, the cop after Greene. I would say he’s “chasing” Greene in the film, but sheesh I don’t think Val Kilmer is chasing anyone these days. And I thought Vincent D’onofrio let himself go. What happened to this sexy, trim actor who
turned on audiences as the lead in Batman Forever (1995) and in The Doors (1991) lead singer Jim Morrison? Could it be he wasn’t getting the sexy roles anymore? Like the lead in The Ten Commandments: The Musical (2006, really look it up; I’m not kidding). Okay, now I really feel bad because of what I said about Val Kilmer. I hope this is the turnaround role for him, really. On second thought, it’s not going to be. His part is (like most of the roles in this film) a stereotype. This movie reminds me of The American (2009) with George Clooney — you want it to be so much better. Admittedly, Kill the Irishman gets a little closer to its mark than the Clooney film, but in the end not by much. So if you’re one who likes to see things “blow up real good,” then definitely see Kill the Irishman. There are some great lines, but in the end this is really just another mob film that aspired to be more. We lost Hollywood legend, Elizabeth Taylor, this week. For a free pass to the 2011 Cape May Film Festival (October 21-23), be the first to email us at capemayfilm@hotmail.com the names of both films for which she won an Oscar.

The Dating Column
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on old Cape Island
L
AST week, Everett Chance referred to my column as “estrogen-laced.” I would like to take this one step further, Mr. Chance. At this moment, for better or worse, my entire life happens to be estrogen-laced. I’m in an estrogen state of mind. For the past year, I’ve been working on my very estrogen-driven graduate thesis, a book on femininity as it exists in the twenty-first century. I’ve always known what it means to be female, of course – two X chromosomes instead of one – but twelve months ago, I set out wanting to know what, exactly, it means to be feminine. I figured that working on my thesis would put a damper on my social life; what I didn’t expect was that the project would interfere with my sex life as well. The problem is that I’ve spent so much time researching, reading books with titles like Full Frontal Feminism, that I’m now up to my eyeballs in female issues. And all the hours I’ve spent studying have turned me into a bit of a raging feminist – a feminist intent on sabotaging my own chances of ever again going full-frontal with a man.
At work, I can no longer help launching into a thesis-inspired lecture about the devolution of dating every time a man uses the phrase “booty call” or, God forbid, “hit it and quit it” in my presence. “Is that any way to talk in front of a lady?” I demand. “And whatever happened to courtship?” The response from my co-workers, who patiently endure my ranting, is always the same: I must need to get laid. And maybe, I’ve considered, they’re right. But, alas, all of my research has made me
a dating dummy. After spending so much time on this project, it’s become difficult for me to hold a conversation about anything else. I’ve learned the hard way that nothing puts the brakes on a first date like weighing the pros and cons of women’s sexual liberation before dessert. And nothing will have a guy yelling “Check, please!” quicker than a conversation about the unfinished business of the women’s movement. With just weeks to go until graduation, I’m anxious to put this project to bed – if for no other reason than I need to have a normal date, with normal conversation, soon. I’m excited for the time when I can go back to drinking my coffee with the morning paper instead of another article on castration anxiety. Until then, my world is most definitely estrogenlaced. So I guess my point would be: welcome to the neighborhood, testosterone! I’m going to need you balancing me out. Just remember, on all these dates you’ll be going on, it’s estrogen who (you hope) will be sitting across the table. Oh, and fair warning, if you’d ever like to take out this particular lady – game on.
