Random Factoid
“Fishes live in the sea, as men do a-land; the great ones eat up the little ones.” — William Shakespeare “A woman knows the face of the man she loves as a sailor knows the open sea.” — Honore de Balzac “Every drop in the ocean counts.” — Yoko Ono
Bluefin tuna, or Thunnus thynnus, are among the largest and fastest marine fish. An adult may weigh up to 1,500 pounds and can swim up to 55 miles per hour. Prized as sushi in Japan, bluefins are also among the most valuable fish, bringing as much as $20,000 at US docks.
Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... Swedish Fish OKAY, so maybe Swedish Fish aren’t real sea life, but they they’re tasty, tasty, tasty. And, in cocktail form, they’re simple to make. Easy and delicious is our kind of drink. (Or, you could always do the REALLY easy thing and drink straight from a bottle of Swedish Fish Vodka. Pinnacle makes it for $12.)
Ingredients 2 oz Vodka of your choosing 1 oz Lime juice 1 oz Triple Sec 2 oz Cranberry juice Fill a cocktail shaker with a half a cup of ice. Add all ingredients, shake, and serve in a chilled martini glass, garnished with a Swedish Fish.

Talk Of The Town
Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
To Build Or Not To Build
THE Army Corp of Engineers may finally be putting the kibosh on the city’s plans for residential development of 96 marshy acres in East Cape May. The city initially signed deals with developers Thomas Brodesser and Philip Robinson of East Cape May Associates, who own the tract, back in 1965 and again in 1969, but development never happened. Concerned that the project might have negative environmental impacts, the Department of Environmental Protection denied the permits, prompting a lawsuit between the DEP and East Cape May Associates that’s been ongoing. Now, after soliciting public comment on the matter, the Army Corp of Engineers have responded to the application for development by saying, in a May 17 letter, “it is unlikely that this office could issue a permit authorizing this project.” Some of the Army Corp’s reasons for probable denial of the project — which would result in the building of 87 housing units, 80 acres designated for open space, and a credit to the city for 14 affordable housing units — are environmental. These include: 1. The property in question is located within 700 feet of a piping plover nesting habitat, and this situation requires that a Biological Assessment be done in consultation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, according to the Endangered Species Act, in order to determine that no harm would come to the birds as a result of development. No such assessment has been conducted as of yet. 2. The plan to create 22 acres of wetlands in Lower Township in order to compensate for the 20.74 acres of lost wetlands
and, ipso fact, lost wildlife that would occur after development in East Cape May has “a low likelihood for ecological success and sustainability.” 3. According to guidelines set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency, “residential home construction is not waterdependent, as that activity does not require access or proximity to a special aquatic site” ie, wetlands. Therefore, an available alternative site (such as the “uplands” the city has claimed are located in the northwest quadrant of the proposed site) will be considered preferable, at least until “an appropriate and convincing rebuttal” can be presented. Once developers provide a thorough description of “the overall purpose and need” for this project, as the Army Corp is requiring, the number of potential off-site alternatives may increase. The Army Corp also believes that further consultation with the National Park Service is needed before it can determine that this project would not adversely affect the city’s National Historic Landmark status, a potential project-killer, as the proposed area of development is located within the Historic District. An investigation into the likelihood of buried Native American archaeological sites in the proposed area is also needed before any application for development can be processed. The letter from the Army Corp has come as a relief to 45 citizens of East Cape May, who also cited potential for increased flooding and increased traffic congestion as concerns in their appeal to the Army Corp. A thank you letter was authored by attorneys Charles Hendricks and Jim Testa, themselves residents of East Cape May, to Lieu-
tenant Colonel Philip M Secrist III of the Army Corp’s Philadelphia District, saying that the development application “was illconceived from political convenience” and “lacked any convincing rationale grounded in the public interest.” City Attorney Tony Monzo responded to the press last week, but his statements, according to Hendricks and Testa, range from “questionable to fantastic.” To begin with, Monzo has questioned the authority of the Army Corp to make decisions on this matter, prompting Hendricks and Testa, in a letter to the press, to cite the Public Notice issued by the Army Corp in January. It indicates not only the authority, but the obligation, of the Army Corp to rule on all projects involving the fill of wetlands in New Jersey, as outlined by the Clean Water Act. Secondly, Monzo has suggested the aforementioned “uplands” as an alternative building site, to which Hendricks and Testa say, “There is simply no evidence put forward that any field testing has been done by NJDEP or any other agency to make assertions necessary to substantiate the subject area as ‘uplands.’” Monzo further claims that no residents spoke at “numerous public meetings” that were held on this topic, but Hendricks and Testa call this unfounded. “When it came to a definitive forum where the public’s voice could be clearly and fairly heard,” they write, “we spoke up.” Finally, Hendricks and Testa take issue with the implication, made by Monzo, that if the development application were to be denied, East Cape May Associates would appeal. The men cite a letter written by Fox

It’s important to keep your livestock happy, according to Jaime Alvarez and Honna Riccio, who work on Beach Plum Farm Aleksey Moryakov
Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 Rothschild law firm (representing the developers) to the State of New Jersey on May 25, which “makes it clear in no uncertain terms that the developer is not girding up for an appeal.” The letter reads: “We would ask for your acknowledgement and agreement that the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection agrees that a condition of the Agreements cannot be met, and… this letter serves as a valid written notice to DEP of the termination of these Agreements.”
Ground-Breaking News
IN MANHATTAN, beautiful, model-tall women are a common sight, and 27-yearold Honna Riccio looks as though she’d fit right in there… except for the dirt under her fingernails, that is. Honna spent the last five years living in New York City, working for a high-end jewelry designer, and then a handbag designer. But she’s traded that life in order to come back to her hometown of Cape May, where she’ll be working the fields and manning
the new farm stand at Beach Plum Farm, located in West Cape May, this summer. “I guess you could say I was a late bloomer in figuring out what I want to do,” she told us. “But now I’ve found myself loving what I do every day, and loving to learn.” We had stopped by the farm for a quick chat, but ended up staying for close to two hours, because Honna and farm manager Jaime Alvarez were kind enough to take us on a tour of the land, a 62-acre operation that supplies most of the produce for the Cape Resorts Group properties. “One of the most fascinating things I’ve learned so far,” Honna said as we drove past the farm’s sheep and pigs pens, “is that bees will kill their own kind if they come back to the hive pollenless. If they don’t produce, they’re murdered.” Jaime and Honna then chuckled about what a metaphor this is for life on the farm, where productivity is all. Honna’s days begin at 6am, when she starts feeding the animals, watering the plants, harvesting, pruning, packaging, weighing, recording, and delivering. “I never imagined how much goes into farming,” she says. (Neither did we. There’s
something the farmers told us about called a cover crop, for instance — caulif lower is one — that works to put nitrogen into the ground for use by other plants, in an allnatural way.) “It is rewarding to be tuned in to the ways Mother Nature works. You begin to appreciate food so much more when you see the produce grow from a seed, and when you’re connected to it.” But connection to our food, Honna and Jaime told me, is something that is lost on too many Americans. “About a month or so ago,” Jaime said, “some people stopped by because they wanted to know how we go about ‘making’ the delicious eggs they’d had in one of the restaurants we supply. At first, I thought they were joking, but then I realized I could have some fun here. I told them to follow me down to the production line where I would introduce them to some of our ‘workers.’ Then I took them to the chicken coop, and showed them where the chickens lay the eggs.” But, uh, don’t all eggs come from chickens, we wanted to know? “Well, commer-

From Page 14 cial eggs today are practically man-made,” Jaime explained. “Most of the chickens are so pumped up with chemicals in order to get as much out of them as possible. The food is poisoned.” The animals get so big, Honna added, they can barely stand on their own, which is “no way to live.” Enter the farm stand, the goal of which is to provide the community with real food, all of which will be coming from this organic farm. “In this way, we’re different,” Honna explained. “Others will supplement with produce from other areas in order to fill up their stand, but our product will be truly, 100 percent, from here.” (Well, except for the great custom hats and T-shirts, printed at Flying Fish on Park Boulevard.) “The day you purchase it,” Jamie said, “is the day it’s been picked.” We can vouch for the taste of the fruit and veggies. On our tour, the farmers allowed us to eat asparagus, strawberries, blueberries, radishes, and broccoli. “Right out of the ground?” we asked, our instinct being to wash the produce first. “That’s the best part,” laughed Jaime. (Oh, right, when there aren’t any pesticides, you don’t need
Thursday, June 14, 2012 to worry about washing. On Beach Plum Farm, it’s a mixture of pepper, natural soap, and garlic that keeps the bugs at bay.) And, in all honesty, this was the most satisfying lunch we’ve had in ages. The farm stand, which is open on Saturdays from 9am until about 3pm with more hours starting July 4, will carry honey (from those very productive bees), eggs (from the chickens Honna converses with daily, in order to keep them happy), fresh fruit (whatever is in-season), tea (grown from the farm’s own herb garden), cut f lowers (the hydrangeas are gorgeous), vegetables (radishes, beets, greens, and asparagus, to name a few), and fresh salads and sandwiches. Some of the produce will be pickled, preserved, or made into chutney by Executive Chef of the Ebbitt Room Lucas Manteca, if you prefer it that way. You can also stop by (the farm makes for a great biking destination) for a sitdown meal, in order to take in the serene vibe of the little stand. Browse a repurposed wood countertop, the base of which is a thick treetrunk, and then eat on one of the nearby picnic tables overlooking fresh herbs and f lowerbeds. Or take a walking tour of the farm and find your own secluded spot to lunch. (We love the hammock and
fire-pit, tucked not too far from the blueberry fields). And look out for the farm’s mobile stand, which will sell produce at the West Cape May farmer’s markets, and outside of Congress Hall throughout the summer. Oh, and be sure to say hello to Honna when you visit — she seems totally content with her decision to move from the big apple for a life on the land. “When I was about ten, this town was all farms,” she said. “Now there is a resurgence, it seems, and it’s so nice to be a part of that.” But is she here for good? “I came here thinking I’d stay through the season, but I can’t imagine leaving now. It’s too amazing seeing how things change here, day by day. Oh my God, did you see that the zinneas are blooming?”

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 very patient delivery man. Food was very well-received all around. We waited all night for the line in front of Gina Peterson’s mobile creperie — Crespella — to lessen, but that never seemed to happen (and Gina’s a fast cook, too.) Eventually we did get our hands on a sweet cream cheese, lime, and graham cracker crepe, which we shared with Debbie Drozda. “Oh my god,” was all she could say, before getting in line for her own. Seaside Cheese, Depot Market, Bliss ice cream, and Sunset Liquor came through for us as well, as did Hawk Haven vineyard, who provided the wine. “This was the most popular drink of the night,” said bartender Helen Linney, who found the time to chat with us, despite the fact that her line was ten deep at one point. (Good thing we put her bar on the deck outside, for this reason. Well, this, and — as Helen put it — “You can’t really beat a Cape May porch in the summertime.”) Helen is due some congratulations, by the way, the next time you see her slinging drinks at the Ebbitt Room. She recently landed a big job with Cape Regional Medical Center, working on everything
from grant writing to public relations. With the irresistible voice of Kate Delany Chew providing the soundtrack to all this eating and imbibing (Kate agreed to play, once again, from the top of a bona-fide lifeguard chair in our shop, this time with wee ones playing in a sand box just below), we took the opportunity to chat with some of you about the upcoming season. “It’s been about even with last year for us so far,” said Bill Causey of the Antique Doorknob, “which is excellent, considering the way things are. I think that’s a great omen.” You might recognize Bill from all of his pictures in this peppy periodical. We asked him how he manages to find our
photographer at so many events, and he told us that he’s currently got a competition going with Victorian Towers resident Shirley Stiles to see whose picture can make it in these pages more often. Good luck to you both! Deanna Ebner of the Cape May Point General Store is also excited about this year. “I’m looking forward to it,” she said. As is Ken Low of the Birdhouse of Cape May. “It’s going to bring riches, riches, and more riches,” he told us. For Cape May Stage, this year will also bring more big name stars. We bumped into artistic director Roy Steinberg somewhere near the crab dip. (Or was it a mouse? We called Tina Kennedy at Seaside Cheese to find out. “It was a crabmeat cocktail spread,” she said. Either way, it’s delicious.) “This is probably going to be our most exciting season yet,” Roy told us. “In the midst of a presidential election the next play, God of Carnage, is particularly timely. The star, Fiona Hutchison, has been getting mobbed by fans in Cape May who’ve seen her on television.” (She played in Guiding Light and One Life to Live.) “And her husband, John Viscardi, is a primetime actor you’ve

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 18 probably seen on shows like Law and Order.” (They were both at the party as well, and very down to earth, we have to say, for being so famous. They couldn’t thank us enough for recommending surfing instructors for their son, who is also lucky enough to be in Cape May this summer.) All in all, it was a great time. A little too great, in fact, for some folks at the Exit Zero office, one of whom is still recovering from a tipsy stumble that badly sprained some ankle ligaments, a situation made worse by one of the Exit Zero family’s biggest dogs, who needed to be carried down some stairs after the party ended when, poor guy, he decided he was too scared to get down on his own. Thanks Cape Urgent care, for providing a much needed brace and ice pack! Watch out for our next party at the store (and on the deck). It will be on July 5 and will be called a Midsummer’s Night Scream, featuring Cape May’s legendary Ghost Writer Craig McManus.
Feeling Crabby
Sea life is ubiquitous in Cape May, whether it’s dolphins putting on a show just off the
beach or a crab cake on your dinner plate. But there’s another cool sea life display in town, courtesy of the Crabby-Cam at Celebrate Cape May. Two television screens, one inside the store and one facing out a window, stream the live antics of the hermit crabs they sell there. (Of course, if you’ve seen a hermit crab, “antics” may be a stretch, but you know what we mean.) We stopped in to check them out, and chatted with hermit crab wrangler Christine Montanio. You buy a cage set-up, in one of four sizes, which includes the cage, gravel, a sponge (which should be kept wet — it’s how the crab drinks) a bottle of food (“Just a pinch, every other day,” says Christine), a feeder bowl, and our favorite part, a cool painted shell for the crab to move into when he outgrows his own. “The kids love the shells — we have cartoon characters, superheroes, SpongeBob, and Angry Birds are really big right now,” Christine says. Then, you simply pick out the crab that strikes your fancy, and they’ll throw him in for free. (Well, they won’t THROW him
in, but you know what we mean.) They also have lots of fun accessories, like bridges for them to cross, a driftwood log to chill on, or their latest, a “coco-hut,” which is half a painted coconut shell with a hole cut out — sort of like a little cave, for him to have friends over, presumably. But if you’re buying more than one, make sure the friends are all around the same size, or there will be fisticuffs, says Christine. In fact, says Celebrate Cape May owner Judy Buck, “It’s not just about selling as many hermit crabs as we can. We always have someone at the hermit crab counter available to answer any questions the customer might have, and we care about who we sell them to — teenage boys who want to scare their girlfriends will not be getting a crab. We also suggest to people on vacation to come back on their last day here to get their crab. We want them to be educated, and we want them to think about it. These are living creatures.
PARTING SHOT There has been way, way too much of this in the last year or so, but we would like to pay our respects to the families and close friends of two well-known, much-loved men, both of whom were talented carpenters and both of whom passed away last week. Rest in peace, Randy Payne and Jimmy Reagan.

“Exquisite cuisine served in a charming 19th century setting makes LaVerandah one of Cape May’s finest restaurants. Elegant dining is offered on the outdoor verandah or in a high-ceiling room cooled by sea breezes flowing through French doors opening to the porch... remarkable cuisine... and sophistication...”

The Movie Column
T
By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival
he summer movie season is almost here — the time when Hollywood puts out its best! Okay, maybe not its best, but rather a boatload of blockbusters they want you to spend some of your leisure time and money to see in theaters. Once again, it looks like superheroes lead the pack, followed by sequels we simply wish would go away, and films that might be worth the admission price. What would summer be without superheroes? This year, Christopher Nolan brings the third in his Dark Knight series with Christian Bale as Batman and Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. The series thus far has been gritty, explosive, and yes, dark. Having seen only bits and pieces of the series, I can’t be certain I’ll see this film. What a perfect opportunity for a Cape May Film Society member to send your notes and let me know how you felt about the film. Every indication is that Batman will still be box office gold. Spiderman also returns to the big screen with a new film, The Amazing
Christian Bale returns in the latest Dark Knight installment, set to strike box office gold Spider-Man. Gone is Tobey Maguire, who portrayed the crawling crime fighter. Enter a new Spider-Man lead, Andrew Garfield, as well as a new villain, The Lizard. The storyline is familiar, revisiting the hero’s origin, but with a different focus on details. Strange to see a reboot so soon
after the last installment of the series released only five years ago. And can it really be that Tyler Perry has a new “Madea” movie? Haven’t we seen enough of this character? And by character I’ll leave it up to you if I mean Tyler Perry or his cross-dressing, muumuu-sporting alter ego. I’m baff led by this filmmaker’s success. Set me straight — see this movie and tell me why you recommend it! Brave is a new animated movie from Disney Pixar that shows promise. Also, director Ridley Scott comes out with Prometheus, a sort of “pre-quel” (but sort of not) story that precedes his Alien series. This film is also getting favorable reviews. But the hottest ticket at the movies this summer is the Cape May Film Camp! Our film professional faculty with experience in ground-breaking independent as well as blockbuster films is set to bring in a class of new and returning students. I invite you to a free screening at the West Cape May Borough Hall on Friday, June 29, 7:00pm. Mark your calendar!

The Exit Zero Bouquet Ambush
«
each week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting and deserving citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s recipient is Dawn Fuget of North Wildwood, who was ambushed in front of the West Cape May CVS. What are you doing here? I’m a pharmacy technician here, and I’m just finishing work. What are you up to today? Actually, I’m just heading home to get some rest. When is the last time you got some flowers? That was at my wedding in 2009. But I just found out that I’m pregnant, so this is definitely one of the happiest days of my life. Thank you! photo by gabi urda... flowers By Cape Winds

eather, resident of Vermont since 1994, passed away from this world at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington, Vermont on March 21, 2012 after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Heather now walks in the world of Spirit with her beloved brother Joseph. Heather, you leave a void in our lives and yet you fill our universe with the brightest of light. A Memorial Service will be held in Cape May, NJ on June 18, 2012 at Sunset Beach at 1pm. All who choose to join us to bid farewell to our beloved Heather may join us on this day. If you choose to speak about Heather and how she has touched your life you are welcome to do so.

The Cape May Crossword
None of the generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for Exit Zero! By Kate Chadwick and Caroline Wenzel So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to our themed issue, which is sea life. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, exitzero.us. Across 2. This flat, round creature, an echinoid, is also known as a sea cookie, and is a relative of the sea urchin. 4. The most venomous and deadly type of jellyfish is this nasty creature. 6 . Lobsters come in every color but this one, although, when they are cooked, they all turn this color. 7. The ships of the Discovery Channel’s popular Deadliest Catch television series hut for King Crab in this treacherous body of water. 8. These legendary giant sea monsters are said to dwell off the coasts of Norway and Greenland. There is also a black spiced rum by the same name. 9. This fellow is the most common household pet fish. He is also a tasty tiny cracker by Pepperidge Farm. 15. After the success of 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, this 1989 film, starring the red-haired Ariel, is credited with breathing life back into the art of Disney animated feature films. 17. These creatures can be found on the beach along the Delaware Bay, and their blood provides a valuable test for toxins that cause septic shock, which previously led to half of all hospital-acquired infections and one-fifth of all hospital deaths.
Looking for him? Check inside an 18 down.
20. The first location of the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company opened in 1996 in Monterey, California. It was inspired, of course, by this 1994 blockbuster starring Tom Hanks. 21. This tiny fish is found either at the end of your fishing rod, or swimming in schools through the ocean. Down 1. Jerry Seinfeld says this episode of his long-running Seinfeld series is one of his favorites. In it, George Constanza is forced to deal with a beached whale after having lied to his girlfriend about being a... 2. The female of this sea species lays eggs in the tummy pouch of the male, where they incubate for 30 days until they hatch. 3. These clever and social creatures can often be spotted right off the shore of Cape May beaches. 4. This mammal is the largest of sea creatures. 5. A group of jellyfish is know collectively as one of these.
10. A parody of John Lennon’s Give Peace A Chance, the song Give Jellyfish Fields a Chance is sung by SpongeBob SquarePants in protest of this superhighway project. 11. When being chasd, these types of sea creatures squirt a dark liquid to distract their attacker. 12. Formerly known as Dead Eye Gulch and before that, Bikini Gulch, this is the home of SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends. 13. These are large underwater structures that house a wide variety of fish colonies and other sea creatures. 14. This astrological sign is represented (pretty accurately) by the crab. 16. These organisms are a crucial source of food to fish and whales. It is also the name of the nemesis of Mr. Krabs. 18. Nemo and his dad live in one of these in their coral reef. It’s also the name of a flowering plant on land. 19. This 1976 blockbuster film, based on a novel by the late Peter Benchley, kept beach-goers out of the water for years — and probably still does.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I am an executive assistant at a local hotel. One of my tasks is to screen job applications. I realize that not every person off the street is cut out to be a front-desk clerk, but a disgraceful resume was just dropped off by an otherwise perfectly pleasant and personable young lady. It was full of misspellings and grammatical errors. I know that we won’t be hiring her, but should I point out the mess that is her resume, or leave it alone? — Aiding and Abetting Dear Aiding It is distressing to the Answer Lady to see the propensity of young to communicate primarily in text-speak these days has carried over to other forms of communication (i.e. graduated high school 2011, OMW to college). Although she is loathe to tell other people how to do things (unless, of course,
Wise answers to perplexing questions
they ask her), you would be doing this young woman a great service by pointing out her errors — not to mention to the future job screeners who will be laboring through her applications. This does not mean you need to print out her resume, deface it with your red pen, and mail it to her. Perhaps an email, thanking her for her interest, advising her that the position has been filled, then tactfully mentioning that you thought she’d like to know that you noticed a few errors she might like to correct prior to applying for her
next position. As an added service, perhaps you could include a link to “Resumes R Us,” or some other such website for job-seekers. Dear Answer Lady I just started working at a grocery store. Sometimes I notice a customer with only one or two items will get in line behind one with a lot of merchandise. Sometimes the person with a lot of stuff lets the other one get in front of them, sometimes not. Should I suggest it? — New Guy Dear New Guy Please tell the Answer Lady that you work at the grocery store she frequents — she won’t mention it by name, but it rhymes with “Forth Tape Spray Whack Me.” On her last visit, an oblivious tourist from a town the Answer Lady won’t mention by name (but whose nickname rhymes with “The Fig Snapple”) pretended he could not see her beyond his overloaded cart, bursting with cheese doodles and Bud Light, as she stood behind him with a loaf of bread and a quart of seltzer. Please check with your boss, but in the name of all that is civil, the Answer Lady votes “yes” to your kind proposition.

What’s Your Story?
Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you and where are you from? My name is Jesse and this is Christian and we are both originally from Maryland, but now we live in Colorado. What brings you to Cape May? We were at a wedding in Wildwood, and decided to spend a day in Cape May. It’s so cute here. It was a great break. We’re heading back today. Any plans for today? We’re enjoying our sorbets right now, but after this we might be renting jet skis if the weather stays nice as it is right now. What do you do for a living? I make lattés, and he is a cook. The theme of this week’s issue is sea life. Do you have a favorite sea creature? [Jesse] Yes. Mine is absolutely the squid. They are so intelligent, yet they’re really so underestimated. [Christian] I’d have to the whale, mostly because I’ve never seen a real one and I really want to. Maybe if we have time we’ll take a trip on the Whale Watcher. History of West Cape May West Cape May is one of four small towns that comprise Cape Island in Cape May County, and was settled by Mayflower descendants, riverboat pilots, whalers and former slaves (the Borough has reported ties to the Underground Railroad and became home to many African Americans who found sanctuary from slave hunters). The Borough’s history goes back to pre-Colonial times when the inhabitants were the Lenni Lenape Indians. The town boasts structures dating to the Colonial period, the Victorian era and some fine examples of the early 20th Century. From 1881 to 1931, the Hastings goldbeating company was located in the Borough employing women to pound one-inch strips of gold into gossamer-thin sheets used for the decorative arts. The site is marked on Goldbeaten Alley. It was this business along with real estate speculation and subdivision of the land that led to the borough’s incorporation in 1884. The core of West Cape May is included in the National Registry of Historic Districts for Cape May and Cape May County NJ. The historic area includes most of Broadway and goes from Park Boulevard to Pacific Ave. and from Sunset Boulevard to Leaming Ave. Although West Cape May was established as a separate town in 1884, some homes date back many years before then. Some of the best times to enjoy West Cape May’s architecture are Fall, Winter and Spring before our many trees leaf out.

The Old Fogey
W
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
here would we be without sea life? Well, there would be no nasty poisonous sea snakes. And no stonefish lurking on the sandy bottom to spine an unwary foot. And no stinging jellyfish, ravenous sharks, sting rays, or a thousand other unsavory aquatic nightmares waiting to kill us. So in that sense, a day at the beach would be infinitely more pleasurable without sea life. But I take the bigger picture, and have gone from merciless hunter of all things underwater, to tireless crusader on behalf of the few living things that escaped my harpoon/speargun/depth charges/small subsea thermonuclear device. It is with more than a little embarrassment that I survey the trophies in the East Wing of D’Catur Mansion, the stuffed and mounted denizens of the deep, all looking down with glassy-eyed disapproval and disappointment at my actions: the Giant Squid the length of a city block, the Great Luminous Magenta Shark (who I only overcame by hunting him whilst wearing blacked-out
goggles), The Cape May Merman (a sordid tale of jealousy, betrayal, and cross-species love) and more. And of course the colossal conservatory whose beams and struts are fashioned from whalebone. I am a changed man now, having spent a century or two trying to right these wrongs. I remember the day I set sail in my custommade submersible, The Naughtyless, on a tenyear mission to rid the oceans of those men who would murder our ocean’s creatures. I avoided brass and glass and mahogany
in the construction: that gaudy showman “Captain” Nemo had made a mockery of that whole look. Instead, I opted for the most modern of construction materials: plastic and concrete and alloys. The Naughtyless was a marvel, capable of a top speed of 30 knots submerged, with a crew of 300 (20 command staff, 280 pressganged Wildwooders for manual tasks and ballast). We set out for Philly, intercepting a whaling ship and sinking it with all hands, having found them guilty of mammalian murder, then a fishing boat whose nets were too fine, and who we found guilty of tiny herring genocide. Finally, a pleasure boat full of Shoebies, who we found guilty of being gauche and sank with a shot. In the end, things didn’t go as smoothly as hoped: I had painted The Naughtyless a smooth white, and blow me if a passing albino whale of uncertain temperament didn’t think we were a lovely lady whale and, well, a rough romance followed. We had to scuttle the vessel just off The Point, where the remains can be seen at low tide to this day. I never was fond of Moby Dick.

To residents of Cape May, friends, family and local businesses:
5/26: Around 6pm On A Saturday At Harpoon Henry’s photographS by Aleksey moryakov
On June 15th 2012, all Friends of Janet and Randy Payne will gather under the Tent at the Nature Center of Cape May for a silent auction of art, gift certificates and other items. This FREE event begins at 6:30pm and winners will be announced before 8:30pm. Short and sweet, with our own Chef Ron on hand to prepare some lovely food for tasting. In the summer of 2009, Randy was diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma, which spread throughout his body. Both Janet and Randy put their careers and earning potential on hold to fight a cancer that tragically took Randy’s life last week. We are working to support the family’s efforts to keep the bills paid, and asking the community to help in any way they can. And there are many different ways to Help 1. Provide us with a piece of art, either one you’ve made or one treasured piece in your home that you can part with. 2. Donate a gift certificate we can auction off. No gift is too small. 3. Volunteer to help with set up and serving. 4. Enlist your friends to come as a group and make bids. 5. Make a direct gift to The Randy Payne Fund at Sturdy Savings Bank on Washington Street in Cape May 6. Attend the Auction and purchase something, knowing that your contribution is helping a local family. 7. We also were given a second Cape May Cruiser Bike and Sue Lotozo of the Flying Fish will accept donations at her booth this summer at the WCM Farmers Market.
Rob, Elizabeth, Karley, Emily, Ryan, Jake
The name will be announced at the last market of the season. A local fisherman from North Cape May was the recipient of the first bike, which was also donated by Anita and Tom Roth. About Donations We will be collecting
donations. Drop-off of artwork or gift certificates at NCCM on THURSDAY June 14th from 10am to 2pm at the Charlotte Van Leer Todd Environment Education Hall. Items can also be brought to Spirit Catcher Photography at Carpenters Square Mall, 31 Perry Street, from 10am to 5pm daily.

Activity Of The Week
H
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Harbor Fest.
arbor Fest, the “weekend celebration of the sea,” is now a long weekend — organizers have added a third day of festivities to Cape May’s most popular party. Harbor Fest, presented by the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May and the Nature Center of Cape May, is scheduled for June 15-17, at venues near the Nature Center on Delaware Avenue. The weekend begins with the Blessing of the Waters at the Fisherman’s Memorial on Friday at 6pm. This ceremony, with local clergy and the Coast Guard recruit band, is a time of remembrance for fishermen who have lost their lives at sea. On Saturday, from 10-5, Harbor Fest becomes a backyard party on steroids, with musicians on the deck of the Charlotte Todd Education Hall and vendors lining the block, creating a mix of delicious sounds, sights and smells. The scallop challenge and the beer garden are two popular tents, but there are also children’s activities and exhibits to showcase Cape May’s connection to the sea. The Marine Science Exhibit includes displays from Rutgers University and Richard
Stockton College. Authors Anthony Frederick and Tama Matsuoka will be on hand to sign books, there will be a showcase of “sailing kayaks,” and the Townbank Dive Rescue Team will conduct a water rescue demonstration, with an on-land team available to answer questions. The rain date is June 17. On Sunday, “Paddle for a Purpose” with
other supporters of the Nature Center’s Good Neighbor Fund, which allows children from the U.S. Coast Guard base to attend summer nature classes. Or, try your luck with the new “Anything that floats but a boat” regatta, in which participants show off their floating creations — duct-tape and cardboard. It starts at noon and will likely end when the wet participants are consumed by laughter. Take a kayak tour, or try stand-up paddleboarding. If you’re a landlubber, try the First Resort Bicycle Challenge, another new event. Not a bad way to spend Father’s Day! The trolley can take you to Harbor Fest, or take your bike — parking will be very limited. Some people like to bring a beach chair, or a small cooler, buy soup or crab cakes to bring home. Bring cash for the food and a reusable shopping bag for souvenirs — merchandise inside the Nature Center will be 20% off during Harbor Fest. Call 609-898-8848 for more information. Harbor Fest, sponsored by “Harbor Master” PNC Bank, is billed as “a celebration of seafood and song; the sea, its culture, its economy and its ecology.” Next week: Sail Away

SKYLA is waiting patiently for someone to take her to a forever home. She’s a very loving and energetic girl, but doesn’t do well with other dogs and cats, so would have to be an only pet. She is worth it, though! Skyla is a very sweet girl who loves attention, and knows tricks, like ‘sit’ and give ‘paw, ’ so could learn more. If Skyla sounds like a good match for you, stop by and give her a second chance! The adoption fee is $95.
«
CALLIE is a very sweet girl, and she loves to play! Sometimes she gets a little carried away and needs to be reminded of her manners. She also needs a little leash training. If you spend time to teaching her to play better, she’ll be a great girl. She knows a few tricks and is eager to learn. She doesn’t do well with cats, but gets along with kids, and some dogs. Stop by the shelter to meet Callie. The adoption fee is $95.
«
manning is a nervous guy at first, but after you take some time with him, he is very sweet. He’s pretty excitable, and will get a bit mouthy when he’s wound up. With a little training, he could be a great boy! He gets along with other dogs, but is terrified of cats. He will also need a home without smaller kids, because he’s too excitable. If Manning sounds like the right fit for you, stop by the shelter to see him. The adoption fee is $95.

With One Closing, Another Opening
T
advertisinG feature
he closing moments of a symphony can be the most thrilling. The composer reminds us of themes presented throughout the piece, bringing each to the forefront in an inspiring, stimulating conclusion. This holds true for Uncle Jacques’ Symphony — closing Friday, June 15 at 8pm — and through it, Cape May Stage is reminded of the play’s important theme: the people we know and love combine to make us who we are. Without our audience, we’re nothing, and for that, we thank you. One of the bittersweet aspects of theatre life is that when a show closes, another opens. We say goodbye to Dominic and Jacques Hoffman, but welcome to the cast of God of Carnage. And what a cast! John Viscardi has played Bobby Gould in David Mamet’s Speed-the-Plow at the Workshop Playhouse. John’s wife, Emmy nominee Fiona Hutchison, is known for her role as Jenna Bradshaw on Guiding Light. New York based actor Jason Guy’s extensive resume spans the United States and abroad including the title role in Hamlet with the National Shakespeare Compnay. Michelle Eugene has played in some of the area’s most well-respected theatres, including Spring Awakening at the Media Theatre and Amadeus at the Wilma Theatre. Join us on opening night, June 21, for hilarity at the show and fun afterwards at Harry’s, with your chance to meet this storied cast. Registration is still open for our Discovery Theatre Camp for ages 9-16. Overseen by Roy Steinberg, this year’s camp will be led
s by master teacher Elizabeth Troxell, head of the theatre department at the Milton Hershey School for 17 years. The camp runs July 10- 20 and campers can sign up for one week or two. Our third annual Broadway Series is shaping up to be our most exciting yet! You still have three weeks to purchase your subscription to see such stars as Anthony Rapp, Lee Roy Reams, Faith Prince, Christine Ebersole, Andrea Marcovicci, and Michael Tucker and Jill Eikenberry. And don’t forget our Gatsby Gala! On June 24 from 6-10pm, the Corinthian Yacht Club will be transported to the Roaring 20s, without that pesky Prohibition thing to worry about! Get your tickets now. Bird Droppings
I
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
stumbled upon a revelation the other day. I was forced to leave Cape May. That’s right. I went North of the Canal. Do you know what I discovered? There is a paucity of birds up there. Not just north of the canal. Way north. In North Jersey, up above the Mullica River. As soon as I got north of it, the Mullica River I began to see fewer and fewer birds. Since so many people visit here from places north of the Mullica River, it explains a lot. It explains why they are not birders. You see, in order to be a bird watcher, it presupposes that you have birds to see. If you don’t see birds, then searching becomes a frustration. So you stop doing it. In fact, you never start. Since more people don’t live here than live there, it explains why most of the planet’s people don’t watch birds. Is there a corollary? Yes. This also explains why so many people who live South of the Cape May Canal do watch birds. You can’t help it. They’re everywhere. On the beach. Over the horizon.
In your hedge. In your neighbor’s hedge. Overhead. On the wires. Plastered against the sky. Cape May is one of the planet’s most bird rich areas. Rich in numbers. Rich in diversity. But you know all this. You live here (or at least you visit here). Now, what you may not know is that there are other places on earth that also rate high on the bird appreciation scale.
Take Peru. Nice country. Peru has about 1,800 species of birds. How does that compare to Cape May? We have about 430 species. Take the Bering Sea. There are times when over 1.5 million Short-tailed Shearwaters can be found in a single pass of the binocular. How many Short-tailed Shearwaters can you find in Cape May? None. The birds don’t occur here. So if these other places have so many birding opportunities that Cape May lacks, why is Cape May so celebrated? Glad you asked. First, it’s a nice, compact, bird-rich package. Peru is huge; Cape May, just a tiny peninsula. You can bird it in a day. You can’t bird Peru in a day. And Peru is a country, Cape May is an island — and a very small island — about 8 square miles (not counting the US Coast Guard Base since that’s inaccessible anyway). The Bering Sea is a pretty inaccessible place, too (not to mention cold). Cape May is very accessible and the amenities are pretty good, too. On top of this Cape

Bird Droppings ? From Page 111 May enjoys high turnover. No matter what time of year it is, new birds arrive all the time, and Cape May has a fantastic birding infrastructure. The folks at the Cape May Bird Observatory have free birding maps, free bird checklists, free brochures. They host daily bird walks, and other programs so basic that even non-birders (who are soon to be birders who haven’t realized it yet) enjoy them. And you’ll see birds the first time out. Save yourself a trip to Peru and the Bering Sea. You’re in the epicenter of the known birding universe and just a stop away from a lifetime of discovery and wonder. For bird watching, Cape May is a door that opens upon a world of riches — ten thousand species across the globe (also known as Greater Cape May). Those 1,800 species in Peru? They don’t include Piping Plover, a Cape May specialty. The 1.5 million Short-tailed Shearwaters. Eh — we’ve had that many American Robins in a single morning. Want a chance to discover just howmany birds you can get during a single walk around Cape May? Head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory — THE place for all your nature needs. You can ask for a

Take a look at the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen out in the field, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars. If it’s nice, sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us online www.BirdCapeMay.org — where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times. You can join Pete for his Monday morning walk at the South Cape May Meadows. Just meet by 7:30 am in The Nature Conservancy parking lot on Sunset Blvd. Loaner binoculars are available at no cost; the walk is $6 for CMBO or NJ Audubon members; $10 for non-members.

The Dating Column
H
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island
ERE’S a deal-breaker: bad kissing. It seems a shame to write off a guy just because he slobbers all over your chin or shoves his tongue so far down your throat you nearly choke. I mean, what’s a little choking when it comes to potential love, right? But here’s the thing — kissing, as my best friend says, is supposed to be a conversation. A back and forth so titillating you just sink into it, until you barely realize an hour has passed since you started. When it’s over, you’re left longing for more. The last kiss I had was more like an argument. Hostile and unyielding. The kind of heated fight to which there is no out. You can fight back, or you can try to back away, but your aggressor just keeps coming at you. Ultimately, you realize this is a losing battle. When it’s over, you’re left longing for a good face wash and your tooth brush. Usually, there is very little middle ground. Men either kiss like gods, or they’re a lost cause. And a kiss gone wrong is a terrible turn-off. Suddenly, all I can picture is
that article I read the last time I waited in the dentist’s chair. Cavity-causing bacteria, it said, can be spread from one person through the next through a serious saliviaswapping session. How lovely. And then there’s my girlfriend’s 11-year-old daughter, who once explained to me that lips are just the sweet end of 60 feet of intestines. I’m pretty sure if my thoughts start drifting toward that image during a lip-lock, something is terribly amiss.
People will tell you not to judge a suitor based on a first kiss. They can’t all be butterfly-inducing, after all. Nerves get in the way. Expectations are too high. It’s like anticipating a great New Year’s Eve. Look too forward to it, and the pressure gets too great. Inevitably, you’ll end up in the emergency room, having slipped on an errant noisemaker or some such thing. But I’m pretty sure a girl knows the difference between a one-off bad kiss, and a tongue that is simply beyond training. Besides, if there’s a tactful way to say, “Would you mind not grossing me out so much with your spit,” I don’t know it. Dear God, I wouldn’t mind having my knees go weak from a kiss. It’s been a long time. Hell, I want to feel my elbows go weak. At the moment, I’m over hoping for a longterm relationship (some strange guy outside of PetSmart asked me if he could lick my legs over the weekend, and the fact that I live in a place where this happens doesn’t instill a great deal of faith), but I refuse to lose hope that, if nothing else, all the best conversations are still ahead of me.
