Subscriber Of The Week
Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: David Carroll of Scranton, PA. How long have you been coming to Cape May? I have been coming to Cape May for 12 years. Who are you normally with? I’m usually with my partner and some friends. Favorite thing about Cape May? The city itself and, of course, the beach. Least favorite thing? My least favorite thing would have to be parking. Favorite restaurants? I’m afraid there are just too many favorites restaurants for me to name. Favorite place to stay? We usually stay at the same place — it’s a lovely condominium on Windsor Avenue. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? It would be that I would make it closer and easier to get to — I’m about four hours away. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? I really enjoy all the pictures of the fun events that you cover. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I guess that I have to wait a few days for it to arrive in the mail. What’s your T-shirt size? I’ll take a large, please!
Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

HE HARBOR Gallery at the Nature Center of Cape May will host the opening of a new exhibit, “Birds In Snow/ Textures In Clay” with a reception on Friday March 2 at 6pm. The public is invited for light refreshments and to meet the two local artists, photographer Scott Whittle of Cape May and potter Susan Ross of West Cape May. The photographs for “Birds In Snow” are the results of several seasons of photography by Scott in various locations in the Northeast. The clay works by Susan, reminiscent of shapes and patterns found in nature, are both intricate and functional. The exhibit runs through March. For more information, call 609-884-2736. CAPE May was spared the wrath of Hurricane Irene last year. Have you heard of the March 1962 storm, and the devastating effect it had on Cape May? Now you can see pictures and films provided by locals who were here to experience that monumental storm. Get details from those who lived through it when the Greater Cape May Historical Society offers a Storms Program.

Talk Of The Town
Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
A Special Kind Of Lady WE DIDN’T know Cathy Pelaez that well, but she was one of those people you didn’t have to know well in order to like. If you were lucky enough to grab a seat next to her in the Brown Room on one of her rare nights off, you know what a vibrant energy she had. It was because of this energy that some people didn’t know Cathy was sick right up until her death from uterine cancer, on February 15, at the age of 59. “She wanted to be private about that,” said her brother Jeff Gernitis, with whom she owned and operated the Peter Shields Inn. “She didn’t want anyone to feel sorry for her. She wanted to celebrate Cape May, and celebrate the Peter Shields Inn.” After growing up in Wayne, New Jersey and earning a degree in speech therapy from Northwestern University, Cathy got a job as a greeter for Liberty Travel. “That’s the person,” Jeff told us, “who stands at the door and gets you a cup of coffee.” Within 10 years, Cathy had worked her way to CEO and, a few years after that, president of the company. It wasn’t until 2008, after Jeff suggested they pool their resources and look for a home at the beach together, that Cathy discovered Cape May. “She had traveled all over the world during her 30-year career with Liberty,” he told us, “but my sister loved the Jersey Shore. She’s the one who decided we should buy a business here.” Seeing online that the Peter Shields was for sale, Cathy made reservations. “Boy did she hate it,” Jeff said. “The building is a 1907 Georgian Revival, but it was decorated in heavy, heavy Victorian, velvet drapes and all. But Cathy thought she could do something with it. She said it had good bones.” The siblings opened in July of 2010 and
that September, Cathy discovered she was sick. “But her passion to create was phenomenal,” Jeff told us. “She still had the courage and the focus to live out her dream of turning this place into something very special.” That winter, despite her diagnosis, Cathy carried out an intense, six-week long renovation. “Her hands have been on every piece in here,” Jeff said, “but the chairs were her passion. She told me: ‘If you’re going to have fine dining, you need to have fine chairs.’ The wood frames were built in Italy, and then they were shipped to Brooklyn for upholstering. She was always so proud of the fact that her chairs have springs on them.” With Cathy’s passing, there is a great sense of loss within the community, as well as Cathy’s family, which includes her husband of 25 years, Armando, and their two poodles, Olive and Spencer. But Cathy’s mission to turn Peter Shields into the finest restaurant in New Jersey is still very much alive. “She wanted to make it her legacy, and we got a long way toward that,” Jeff said. “We know what she likes and what she would have liked, and we want to accomplish that.” In the midst of all the grieving, there is gratitude. “We had become like a lot of brothers and sisters,” Jeff said. “We saw each other at Christmas, Easter, family events. We’d drifted apart, and Cape May brought us back together. I got to spend the last three years, every day, with my sister — talking with her, arguing with her, learning from her. That’s what Cape May did for us. I learned what a truly remarkable person Cathy was.”
To Be Or Not To B&B JAY Schatz, owner of The Abbey B&B on Gurney Street, thinks Cape May’s unofficial title as bed and breakfast capital of the world
is in jeopardy. “Many people aren’t interested in the history and character of a pre-1900s house,” he told us this week. “They want to stay in glass and plastic hotels with showers that squirt water on you from sudden and unexpected places.” We at Exit Zero have never coveted such a shower (at least, no one here is admitting to it), but maybe, we thought, that doesn’t mean other people don’t. Perhaps the future of bed and breakfasts – at least those without modern amenities like unexpected shower squirting – is dismal after all. The B&B generation is getting older, and younger crowds aren’t exactly drawn to the doily-and-drapes image… right? The current selling trend would suggest not. (Jay has an agreement of sale that will convert the Abbey into a house rental, and about a dozen others have gone the same direction in the last five years.) Or maybe not. We caught up with Diane Hutchinson, owner of the Fairthorne Cottage on Ocean Street, who is of a different mind. Diane has also made the decision to sell part of her property (she and husband Ed are now running four rooms out of one building, rather than 10 rooms out of two buildings). But it was a decision motivated by the desire to move in a more high-end direction (select-comfort mattresses, onsite parking) rather than concern over Cape May’s B&B industry having lost its appeal. “The island is only 4.5 square miles,” Diane told us, “and there’s probably still 50 inns here.” While Diane acknowledges that Cape May’s inns are often “more valuable as real estate than as businesses,” she says there is “no lack of customers.” And this includes young customers. “My guests range in age from late 20s

AFTER THE SALE... WHEN GOOD B&BS GO BAD.
Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 to 70s,” she said. And what’s more: it doesn’t take funky showerheads to attract members of Generation Y. It’s the simple amenities that Diane offers, like bicycles and beach chairs – things which hardly detract from the character of a Victorian B and B – that younger folks enjoy most. We spent a night at the Mason Cottage this week (see page 47), and we can attest: young people ARE interested in Cape May’s inns. A full quarter of the Mason Cottage guests are between the ages of 30 and 40. We shared a breakfast table with a girl who, with her maroon hair, looked more like a punk rocker than your typical inn guest, and her Air Force enlisted boyfriend, who’d just celebrated his 30th birthday. “Bed and breakfasts feel like home,” the couple told us. “They’re more personal than a hotel.” But is this the general consensus among the under-thirty set? Patty Goyette, the Mason Cottage’s 37-year-old innkeeper, admits there might be a slight “intimidation factor” when guests first arrive. “Some people are afraid to touch anything,” she said. But this isn’t something that lasts long, once they see how “welcoming and inviting” Cape May’s bed and breakfasts are. “People will ask ‘Is that brandy in the corner?,’” Patty told us. “Relax and help yourself, I tell them, and I suppose you can use a coaster if you’re not comfortable resting it on a doily.”
So, good news for Cape May: it sounds like we’re not relinquishing our unofficial title as bed and breakfast capital anytime soon. As for the current selling trend? “That’s not unusual for a resort town,” said Elan Zingman-Leith, Coastline realtor and 23-year-owner of Leith House, on Ocean. “It’s natural.” And for those of you worried that all these private house rentals popping up over town will attract a different sort of clientele (the kind who’d flop for a summer, get sloshed at Carney’s and generally wreak havoc), fear not. “Cape May is not going downhill,” Leith said. “It’s getting more expensive. If you’re going to pay $6,000 a week, that’s not a flop house.”
Running Rum In Cape May WE STOPPED by the Second Annual Rum Runner’s Ball on February 18 in the Congress Hall Ballroom, and this is what we learned: Cape May can’t dance. The Charleston ain’t your thing, folks. But, we will say this: You do look good while attempting it. We were impressed with the creativity of the costumes at this event, which benefits the Museum of Cape May County and The Cape May County Historical and Genealogical Society. We saw only two people out of 112 who weren’t in costume, and one was a photographer from the Press of Atlantic City. To the other gentleman, some guy in a navy blue sweater: step up your game. The men looked dapper in tuxedos and
as for the women... there were a lot of feathers. The biggest one we saw sat perched atop the head of a Linda Willson from Swainton. “I spent an hour and a half picking out just the right one,” she told us. (She also spent four hours sewing a black scarf onto the bottom of her dress, in order to make it more “twenties.”) We met folks from all over — Virginia, New York and, uh, Beesley’s Point — who’d made everything from bedazzled shoes to boas. We loved the enthusiasm, but we couldn’t help but feel surprised by it. This is a Victorian town after all… shouldn’t this have been a Victorian-inspired event? According to Pary Tell, Historical Society Director, that would have been sooo 1890s. “Victorian has been done,” she told us. “There was a lot of rum running happening in this area in the 1920s that people don’t focus on.” Later in the night, as if to affirm this, local Carol Boyd told us that her father used to be a member of the Coast Guard responsible for “walking the beaches,” busting law-breakers. She also told us that, in researching the ball, the Historical Society discovered an article which says, in the 1920s, the mother of the chief of police was arrested for running a speakeasy in West Cape May. How very Boardwalk Empire! Our favorite part of the evening was the unexpected raid that took place around 8:15pm. The legendary Prohibition Agent,

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 Eliot Ness (aka former mayor Bob Elwell) stormed the ballroom to arrest County Clerk Rita Fulginetti for “operating a house of ill-repute,” Billmae Cottage owner Linda Steenrod for “being a woman of ill-repute,” and husband Bob Steenrod for “public intoxication, private intoxication and just plain intoxication.” Maw McGuigan (aka 89-year-old Alice McGuigan) was also brought before the judge, CMPD Officer Tony Genaro, for running an “illegal still down by the old creek.” After the accused made bail, we ran after Linda Steenrod. We wanted to know if she is running for mayor. This isn’t exactly the question you picture yourself asking a woman who’s busy tugging a flask out of her garter belt, but we think Linda would make a wonderful candidate, nonetheless. She simply shrugged her shoulders and ran off to sell more candy cigarettes and chocolate cigars, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed.
what they’re wearing? “Vintage Calvin Klein with Neil Lane diamonds,” you might read in your People magazine the following week. We stopped in for a visit at Mary Anne’s Jewelry for a look around for anything that might be Oscar-worthy. Our eye was immediately drawn to a sparkling necklace, and we asked manager Karen Fromhold about it. It’s an exquisite Alexandrite and diamond number, an estate piece from the 1940s, and it can be yours for a mere $27,995. (Good thing they have lay-away at Mary Anne’s, huh?) For some reason, we had been laboring under the delusion that Alexandrite was an inexpensive gem, but au contraire. Karen tells us Alexandrite is the only stone that sells for more than diamonds per carat — depending upon the stone’s quality, between $500$1,000 more. “Alexandrites were originally mined exclusively in Russia, and are named after the Tsar Alexander,” Karen told us. “They are now primarily mined in Alaska and Peru.” The thing we really liked about

the Alexandrite is how the gems change color depending upon the light, from a green to a rosy pink. It’s truly a stunning necklace, set in 18-carat yellow gold — just perfect for your next red-carpet evening. “This is what we call a lifestyle piece,” Karen tells us. “It’s not the sort of thing you wear to stroll around Cape May, unless of course you’re going to the Oscar Pre-Party,” (at the Mad Batter on Sunday, February 26 at 5:30pm, by the way). And will Karen be at the party? “No, although I’d like to go,” she says. “We just got a puppy, Heidi, a three-pound miniature dachshund, about a week ago, and I don’t want to leave her alone after working all day. A Moment In History Historical Editor Ben Miller continues his look at Cape May’s Urban Renewal Movement

T
HIS week’s historical article is a double feature! The article at the top shows former Cape May Mayor Walter C. Wright, pictured in a 1962 article about the New Jersey Historymobile. He presided over the city from 1960 to 1964. Mayor Wright’s legacy was overshadowed by the epic struggle between Urban Renewal and Preservation that occurred in the decade after his administration and unfortunately, few know of his contributions. Mayor Wright not only oversaw the reconstruction of Cape May after the 1962 Nor’easter and conceived the idea for the promenade/seawall, he was also the true founder of Urban Renewal. Mayor Wright’s vision for Urban Renewal included the restoration of Victorian buildings and the creation of a gaslight historic shopping district in the center of town. He felt the city could capitalize on the many Victorian structures, much like the Cottagers did years later. Some have disputed Mayor Wright’s role in Urban Renewal, but take note to the headline at the bottom of the newspaper clipping “37 More Gas Lights To Be Placed In Historic Section Of Resort” and then the date on the top of the clipping (8/30/1962). Frank Gauvry became Mayor in 1964 and Mickey Blomkvest joined the council in 1968.

The Movie Column
I
By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival
HAVE reviewed five of the nine films nominated for Best Picture this year. Here’s a review of the ones we missed. Moneyball: At first you think, “Why should I care about a bunch of millionaires (although underpaid, still millionaires) running around in the world of contemporary baseball?” And for some (like Cape May resident Patricia C.), there was no getting over that feeling. I appreciated the underdog factor and the character study of Oakland A’s General Manager, Billy Beane (played by Brad Pitt, for which he is nominated for Best Actor). The tension was real, the inside look at Beane’s personal life was heartfelt and genuine, and ultimately the story was well told. Patricia did not put her “stamp” of approval on the movie. “They were trying to make Pitt out to be a young Robert Redford,” she says. The Tree of Life: This is Terrence Mallick’s film about…okay it’s about family, loss, struggles, triumphs, and you feel all of that, your emotions should be stirred, the film should evoke some child-
See how your picks measure up when the Academy Awards air on February 26 hood memories. For that, its nomination is warranted. For anyone who wants a story told beginning, middle, end (more of a meat and potatoes film lover, you say?), this film won’t work for you. Extremely Loud& Incredibly Close: Pack enough tissues — tear-jerker doesn’t begin to describe how much it gets out of

you. Working through trials, facing fears, and forgiving yourself for past mistakes are primary themes. It didn’t work for most people, but I didn’t hate it. However, I couldn’t help feeling a bit, well, played. Images of September 11, references to the aftermath and how we feel about it today— incorporate them into a manuscript and (guess what?) you have an emotional film. War Horse: This film got so much hype I had to sequester myself from television commercials and reviews before seeing it. It was told (and interestingly from the Horse’s perspective), but longer than necessary (as most of the ones nominated this year are). Maybe I need to be more cynical, but I thought the good graces the horse received were not entirely because they appeared in a big budget Hollywood film. But don’t take my word for it! Share your opinions about this year’s films at our Oscar Party, February 26 at Mad Batter. We roll out the red carpet at 5:30pm with a great buffet, cash bar, and prizes! What’s Your Story?
Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you? I’m Matt Szcur and this is Natalie Cooper. Where are you from, Matt? Erma. Make sure you give Erma a plug. And Natalie? North Wildwood. Where are you coming from? We were just at the Lobster House coffee shop. And where are you right now? At the very end of the Cove jetty. What were you doing when we interrupted you? Just kind of hanging. I leave tomorrow, for Mason, Arizona, for spring training with the Chicago Cubs, so I just wanted to enjoy one last day in Cape May. If I offered you one million dollars, on the condition that you could never watch another movie again, woud you take it? No! You don’t even have to think about that? No, we’re big movie buffs. Who would you like to play you in the movie of your life? Brad Pitt! I’m a big fan. Interview by Diane Stopyra PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

Sleeping Around
Every week, we test the beds of Cape May’s hotels and inns. This week... Mason Cottage. WHERE IS IT? On Columbia Avenue, only .1 miles from the beach (we clocked it). That’s one block, people. WHAT IS IT? The Mason Cottage is an 1871 country Victorian bed and breakfast, with lofty ceilings and one beautiful, sweeping veranda. WHO RUNS IT? The inn is owned by The Columbia Avenue Associates, but it’s run by the beautiful Patty Goyette, who does all of the cooking and baking (which in itself is a reason to come here). HOW MANY ROOMS? There are nine rooms, five of which are suites, and one of which gets redone every winter. WHAT’S THE VIBE? The vibe is comfortable. “People of all ages come here and feel welcome,” Patty says. (The warmth from the fireplace that greets you immediately upon entering doesn’t hurt with that.) AMENITIES? You’ll love the Turkish cotton bathrobes, Jacuzzis, iPod docking stations, flat-screen televisions (in every room), gourmet breakfasts (served outside in the summer, if you like), twenty-four hour coffee bar, and the Hughes Sitting
Room, which includes a library hundreds of books strong, board games and, for the gamer in the family, a Wii. WHAT’S THE BED LIKE? The mattress is a Sealy Posturpedic Comfort Plus Plush, perfect for snacking on with one of Patty’s delicious double chocolate cookies while listening to the rain outside. WHAT’S FOR BREAKFAST? We had a cheese and onion quiche with tasty sausage and refreshing orange-mango juice. The folks next to us couldn’t stop drinking the coffee. OTHER REFRESHMENTS? The Mason
Cottage hosts afternoon tea every day between 3pm and 4pm. There you will find some of Patty’s masterpieces, including hand-dipped chocolate covered Oreos. In the summer, there’s lemonade and ice tea, and to warm you up in the chillier months, try hot mulled cider, hot chocolate, or tea. INSIDER TIP: There are two important ones. One, bring your pup if you’d like; the Mason Cottage is dog-friendly. And two, don’t forget that October 1 through March 31 is 6 Months of Chocolate Decadence at the Mason Cottage. “Chocolate is our thing,” she says. Even breakfast comes with something chocolate-infused. At the inn’s First Friday receptions, Patty will serve a spread of 25 to 30 different items, including chocolate fondue, chocolate-dipped dried fruit and, our favorite, chocolate wine. RANDOM FACT: Patty, who is leaning toward veganism herself, is happy to accomodate any dietary requirement. CONTACT INFO: The Mason Cottage is located at 623 Columbia Avenue. For more info, call 609-884-5611.

EACH week, Exit Zero will be ambushing unsuspecting and deserving citizens with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from a local florist. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s lucky recipient is Bill Ross, who was ambushed at the Cove with daughters Haley and Mackenzie. Where are you from? York, Pennsylvania. Occupation: Manufacturing. What were you doing when we interrupted? Just looking at the waves. It’s a lovely, sunny day in Cape May, but it’s kind of cold and windy, too. When is the last time you got some flowers? A long, long, long time ago! Probably more than ten years ago, at least. The Cape May Crossword
None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Kate Chadwick SO YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to our themed issue, which is Hollywood. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, exitzero.us. ACROSS 2. This nerdy fellow’s 1985 Big Adventure film found him wreaking havoc on his bicycle on a Hollywood soundstage. 3. This Oscar-winner directed not one, but both of the two highest-grossing films ever, one in 1997 and the other in 2009. 5 . Lana Turner was allegedly discovered at this drugstore while skipping school. 7. Many famous people have stuck their hands in the cement here. 8. The first motion picture copyright is held by this famous inventor. 12. This nickname for Hollywood brings to mind the glitter factor of the place. 15. This east coast native penned the song “Say Goodbye to Hollywood,” which appeared on his 1976 album Turnstiles. 17. The iconic Hollywood sign originally read this way; also the title of a 2006 about George Reeves starring Ben Affleck. 19. This mile and a half stretch of Sunset Boulevard is known for, among other things, its huge array of colorful billboards. 22 . This theater is the anchor of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 23. This prominent director was known for making cameo appearances in every one of his macabre films. 24. Named after the iconic street, this 1950
Johnny Depp was a part-owner in 16 down.
film noir was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won three. 25 . This 2009 film is the highest-grossing movie of all time, having beat out the previous winner by the same director. DOWN 2. This iconic West Hollywood nightclub opened in 1964 and is credited with the concept of dancers in cages. 4. The script for this 1976 Mel Brooks movie contains one word, “non,” but plenty of sound effects. 6. This 1939 epic won 10 Oscars and was the highest-grossing film ever until 1966. Even after adjusting for inflation, it has still earned more at the box-office than any other film. 9. This iconic film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards in 1943, winning three. It contains what is likely the most misquoted line in cinematic history, attributed to Humphrey Bogart. 10. Originally hosted by Peter Marshall and anchored by the sardonic Paul Lynde,
this popular tic-tac-toe inspired television game show ran from 1965-1981. 11. The site of many a starlet’s career launch was this spot in the offices of unscrupulous directors and agents. 13. This writer-director has won several Oscars, including best screenplay, best director and best picture. His Midnight in Paris is a 2012 triple-threat nominee. 14. Due to a metal shortage in World War II precluding the use of gold plating, Oscar statuettes were made of this material for three years. 16. Johnny Depp was part owner of this nightclub when it opened in 1993, although it is now best-known as the site of the drug overdose death of actor River Phoenix. 18. The cross-street name (with Hollywood Boulevard) of the most famous corner in LA. 20. This 2012 best picture nominee is based on the 2009 best-selling novel by actress Kathryn Stockett. 21. This outside-the-box film is also nominated for 2012’s best picture award, and is widely-considered a shoo-in.

The Answer Lady
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I have a very good friend who is like a brother to me, and he says I am the big sister he never had. He spent the past year in a terrible relationship that was full of drama and dysfunction, and mine was the shoulder he cried on – which is fine. But then, I was with some friends at the Ebbitt Room bar on Valentine’s evening, and there he was – at a cozy table for two with the evil one. I’m so annoyed I don’t even know what to say to him. What would a big sister do? - Sisterly Dear Sisterly Well, this big sister would slap him silly. The Answer Lady jests, of course, but she knows just how frustrating it can be when one’s advice falls on deaf ears, while you watch someone you love repeat the same mistakes over and over while they wonder what the heck the problem is. The difference
Wise answers to perplexing questions
might be this: if you are just dispensing your advice willy-nilly, it may be going in one of his silly ears and out the other. If, on the other hand, your friend is ASKING for your advice, and then choosing to completely disregard it, you are enabling his behavior by continuing to dispense it. So the next time he says “Oh, Sheila is up to her old tricks of having sex with her next-door neighbor again – that woman just drives me crazy,” your response should be something like “I feel like I’ve heard this song and dance routine before. What do
you plan to do about it?” Dear Answer Lady So after years of hard work, I graduated in December with my law degree. The problem is, I don’t think I want to be a lawyer. I think I want to move to Cape May and open a bed and breakfast. Have I lost my mind? – Innkeeper or Ambulance Chaser Dear Innkeeper Congratulations on the degree, dear. No matter what, that is an achievement worth celebrating. Having said that, the Answer Lady will now say that just because one CAN do something doesn’t mean one SHOULD do it. This applies to the big things in life, like marriage, reproducing, driving, and having sex with one’s next-door neighbor, as well as to the smaller things, such as wearing yellow pants, singing karaoke, or eating donuts for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It has been said by greater minds than the Answer Lady’s that one should do for a living what one would do if money wasn’t part of the equation. If that means running a B&B to you, then the Answer Lady cannot imagine a better place to do it than Cape May.

The Old Fogey
H
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
OLLYWOOD? I scoff! It was never a patch on our very own CapeMayWood. I recall we came up with the idea to launch what was to be the world’s biggest film studio after a long night of single malts, and that Ernie Hemingway at some stage passed around a tiny emerald green frog he had found in a recent expedition to the Amazon and instructed us all to lick the amphibian. This we did and spent the next five hours brainstorming some of the most dazzling ideas ever to be uttered on this earth. Sadly, of the dozen of us present, all were so intent upon speaking, that no-one was actually listening and the vast majority of schemes to change the world were lost forever. The only reason I recall CapeMayWood is that when I awoke next day I looked out of the window and saw, in the garden, an enthusiastically if amateurish made sign of just those letters, ranged across the rosebeds and up into the alpine rock garden. Of course, this plan was a bold one, and meant some small renovations to our proud
city, starting with razing the much loved Admiral Hotel to make way for a huge lot, and allowing for any and all modifications to be made to city buildings for a shoot. This was the least we could do, I felt, and sure enough, we soon had Cecil B DeMille on site with a cast of 100,000 to do a Victorian England drama. Well, at that time Cape May’s buildings were mostly sandstone, with a Spanish influence (a tribute to the gold we liberated from a treasure ship and spent on the city) and so we tore them all
down and built a confection of perfectly insane Victorian-sort-of houses and hotels and stores. In the end I was fairly happy with what we had crafted, though perhaps on reflection we overdid the frippery. No matter: Cecil B loved it and filming was a huge success, with only a few hundred extras dying during filming, mostly from tuberculosis that Cecil had imported to give the shoot extra authenticity. On the last day, when the film was done and secured in 300 huge steel reel boxes, we had a wrap party and toasted Cape May’s soon-to-be-assured fame as movie capital of the world. Unfortunately, Ernie Hemingway crashed the event with that damnable frog of his and the last I remember clearly is him rubbing the thing on Cecil’s forehead. The subsequent revels and the fire that started burned down most of the town, and only my quick reactions allowed me to bury the reels before the blaze took hold. Sadly, in all of the confusion I forgot where they are, and to this day know that our movie making fortune lies under our feet.

Activity Of The Week
T
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Learning with the kids.
HE list of things I didn’t learn in school is long; my attention span isn’t. I’ve been known to use children to fill the gaps in my education. Thanks to nieces and nephews, I discovered the hour-long Family Concerts presented by the Philadelphia Orchestra and battlefield tours aimed at Boy Scouts. I’ll use my own kids to see a museum lecture on one painting and go home happy. That’s why I’m delighted by the learning opportunities for kids in Cape May this winter —because I can tag along. With the Nature Center’s KidsCan Expo and MAC’s “Kids Winter Workshops,” we can all learn something. The KidsCan Expo, presented by the Nature Center of Cape May, is an established event where children (and their tagalong parents) enjoy hands-on activities, exhibits, face painting, dance troupes, nature walks, and more. You’ll get your hands dirty, so bring the wipes. Kiwanis Club volunteers serve refreshments, and students from around the area take part, both as presenters and participants. The event takes place on Sunday, February 26, from 11 to 4pm at the Cape
May City Elementary School on Lafayette Street. Admission is $6, with additional small charges for food and some crafts. Children under 2 are admitted free. For more information, call the Nature Center at 609-898-8848. The Kids Winter Workshops are something new for the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts. Designed for children aged 7 to 10, the
workshops feature stories and crafts at the Emlen Physick Estate on Washington Street. On February 11, MAC addressed “How Victorians Communicated,” telling the story of life before text messages and computers. While the medium was more elegant, the gist of the messages — like, OMG! U R QT — was remarkably similar. On March 3, children will learn about March King, John Philip Sousa, who vacationed in Cape May and wrote the “Congress Hall March” in 1882. On March 24, they’ll hear about Victorian clothing, which required more planning than jeans and a tee shirt. On April 14, the workshop teaches about the architecture of Frank Furness, who is credited with the design of the Physick mansion. The workshops run from 10 to noon, and tickets are $10. MAC members pay $7. For more information, call 609-884-5404. Treat yourself to a little learning this winter. If you don’t have kids, offer to babysit. You’ll have fun, the kids will get out of the house, and your grateful friends will enjoy lunch out at a restaurant without crayons or chicken nuggets. Next week: The Play’s the Thing

MEMBER of a prominent Cape May family, Jackson Von Savage transferred from Wildwood Catholic to Lower Cape May Regional High School during his current sophomore year. The son of Claudia and David, he is their third child and is brother to Maddie, David, and Kate. So far in his time at Lower Cape May Regional, Von Savage has made his mark in various sports, several extracurricular activities, as well as in the classroom with his strong work ethic. As a basketball and lacrosse player, FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) and Boys Scouts of America member, Von Savage has managed to successfully balance these activities with LCMR’s academic honors program. “Academics always come first,” said Von Savage of his time management skills. Von Savage’s aspirations for the future include pursuing a career in business. He plans to study at a four-year college, where he will no doubt continue with his goal to be the very best student he can possibly be. «
BLUE BELL was tied to a tree and left for dead. When rescued, she was emaciated and hoping beyond hope for someone to love. Things started looking up when she was brought to the shelter, where she no longer had to be scared, but then... she had to undergo a hysterectomy. Finally, she’s healthy as can be and, amazingly, still very much a lover, so eager to please despite all her mistreatment. The adoption fee is $9.
«
DIAMOND is an 8-month-old Lab/ Pitt mix. Due to tough times, he and his sister Arisa (right) were surrendered to the shelter. He is great with dogs, cats and children because he’s lived with all of them, and though he can be a little anxious at first, he is a sweet, obedient boy. Please come check out these two sweethearts; they are used to being in a home, and they deserve to have that again. The adoption fee is $95.
«
ARISA was recently surrendered to the shelter because her owners had to move and couldn’t take her with them. This made her very sad as her world was turned upside down and she didn’t understand why. While she is a sweet, obedient girl who is very social, she is a little skittish so she is going to need a quiet home, preferably without small or rowdy kids, as they will make her anxious. The adoption fee is $95.

PIPER, a 2-year-old, arrived with Shiloh (right) when their owner passed away. They’re lifelong companions, so consider adopting them together; we’ll even waive one fee. Piper’s shy at first, but she warms up quickly. Because she’s not used to them, a home without youngsters is best. The adoption fee is $35.
«
SHILOH arrived at the shelter along with her sister, Piper, to the left! This 2-year-old tabby is a bit shy at first, but that isn’t surprising, as she’s so used to being in a loving home. Because she’s not used to them, a home without youngsters is best. Adopt these cuties together, and one fee is waived. All the more to love! The adoption fee is $35.
«
CAMEO is a sweet little lady who loves attention. Spend just a few minutes with her and you will have a friend for life. She loves to be pet, and she loves to show affection back. If you’re the kind soul who could give this sweetie a second chance at a happy life, stop by the shelter. The adoption fee is $35.

Cape May Stage Makes Its Marx ADVERTISING FEATURE
C
APE May Stage is preparing to launch the 2012 season as well as the ever popular Second Stage series on Monday Nights. On May 21 we begin our season with Flywheel, Shyster and Flywheel, the hilarious comedy that introduced the Marx Brothers in 1932 on NBC Radio. Some of you will likely remember Oscar Levant, the outrageous pianist. On June 11 we will present an evening of his comic genius. In July, every Monday will be filled with the biggest names in today’s theatre and cabaret world. Anthony Rapp from Rent performs on July 2, multiple Tony Award winner Christine Ebersole performs on July 9, and iconic musical performer Lee Roy Reams takes the stage on July 16. Faith Prince won the Tony Award for Guys and Dolls opposite Nathan Lane; she’ll be here on July 23. August brings us Andrea Marcovicci from the Oak Room at the Algonquin, and then Emmy Award winners Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker from LA LAW. Our mainstage shows are still bringing hoardes of people to Cape May. This season has comedies and dramas for every taste with high-profile actors from Broadway and Hollywood. This is the season to subscribe and we have different packages for every budget and schedule. Next week begins a month-long offering of free classes from Cape May Stage in Cape May and Cumberland counties as part of New Jersey Theatre Alliance’s annual Stages Festival. The schedule is on capemaystage. org/education under Family Week at the
Theatre and Stages Festival. All ages and levels of experience are invited to participate in improvisations and theatre games and discussions with Artistic Director Roy Steinberg. Come join the party! Call 884-1341, for more information, or visit capemaystage.org.

Bird Droppings
S
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
O, I just got back from the Valley. No. Not Hidden Valley. THE Valley. In Texas. Home of.... Well, what does it matter? Hardly any of those Rio Grande specialties ever turn up here. But one of the things that rare birds in Texas often have in common with rare birds in New Jersey is distance; and I’m not talking about the distance between the lighthouse and Laredo. I’m talking about the distance between birders and the bird they aspire to see. Down in the Valley, I saw lots of birders. Lots of birds. Lots of binoculars and lots of distance. And very few spotting scopes. What I want to know is why? If you are serious about birds, if you do more than look at birds in your back yard, then you need a spotting scope — a reach out and nullify the distance device that confers supernatural intimacy with birds. Binoculars get you into the game. Spotting scopes put you in the seats next
to the sideline. If you don’t own a spotting scope, now is the time to think about buying one, perhaps at the upcoming Cape May Bird Observatory’s annual optic sale. The date is March 17 — just a couple of weeks away. The place is about 25 miles north of Cape May at CMBO’s Center for Research and Education in Goshen (mile marker 15.8 to
be exact). But this would be a very short column if all I was trying to do was get you to the sale. In fact, it would end here. But my objective is to make sure you get the best scope you can for the money. There are lots of makes and models out there. Some are junk. Some don’t work for birding. Trust the folks at the Bird Observatory to know the difference between a scope that works in the birding arena and one that doesn’t. Your first step should be trying on several scopes for size; scopes are not one size fit all. Some have smaller objective lenses so they are lighter, more portable. Some have larger objective lenses, allowing you to take pictures through them with a digital camera. And yes, you can actually do this. It’s called digiscoping. The results, the images, will blow you away. Scopes come with different eye pieces — fixed magnification and zoom. Some offer an angled eyepiece, some “straight

Bird Droppings ? From Page 75 through.” What’s the difference? That’s what the store staff at CMBO can tell you. Me? I’m just the dispatch center. Some scopes have standard optical glass. Some have HD (high density) or Fluorite glass. What’s the difference? Price tag and image quality. You can talk to the folks at CMBO about this, too. Oh, one last thing. Whatever you do, DO NOT SKIMP ON THE TRIPOD. You are better off buying a $400 spotting scope and putting it on a $200 tripod than putting a $3,000 scope on a $90 tripod. Stability, after all, is what makes high magnification possible and the foundation of that stability is the tripod. Buying a spotting scope represents a big day in the evolution of birders. Come to the sale prepared and this means going to the Cape May Bird Observatory BEFORE THE SALE (which is why I’m writing this article now — to give you time) to test out instruments and see what works for you and fits your budget. Come Optics Sale Day, you don’t want to mess around. Get in line early (doors open at 9 AM; people start lining up at 7:30 AM); first ones in the door get first shot at the best selection
“Binoculars get you into the game. Spotting scopes put you in the seats next to the sideline,” says our man. and price. Head straight to the table with the bargains. Scoop up a deal. Go out and get intimate with nature. Did I mention you have to be a member of the Cape May Bird Observatory (or New Jersey Audubon) to get into the sale. No? Well, you have to be a member — preferably with your membership card. You don’t want to waste precious time that morning having someone look up your membership information. The Cape May Bird Observatory is

THE place for all of your nature needs. CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609.884.2736), and is open 9:30am to 4:30pm every day but Tuesday. Pick up a free schedule, birding map and checklist. Take a look at the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen, scan the bookshelves or pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, or just browse around. While you’re there, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars or, if it’s not a particularly cold day, sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us online www. BirdCapeMay.org — where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Dating Column
M
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island
Y SISTER got the giggles at Great Aunt Helen’s funeral recently. She was waiting in line to pay her respects at the casket and couldn’t hold it together. In a quiet church full of somber people, the sound of her laughter echoed across pews and stained glass windows. Actually, my sister does this at every funeral. The more tragic the death, the harder she laughs. Was the deceased young, his death an untimely, freak accident? Did he leave seven children and a grieving widow behind? My sister will be in stitches somewhere between the receiving line and the internment. It’s not that she’s a wildly inappropriate person. It’s that sometimes, when something’s really sad, there’s nothing left to do but laugh. We cry until we crack up, we laugh until we cry. It’s bizarre, but that’s the way it is. We’re constantly straddling the line between comedy and tragedy. Have you ever seen that movie, Melinda and Melinda? It’s a Woody Allen film that tells the story of one woman two different ways — one through the lens of comedy
and one through the lens of tragedy. The scenes alternate between the two genres, and I’ve heard people complain that it’s difficult to keep track of which story you’re watching. Instead of belly-laughing through the humorous parts and tearing up during the sad scenes, as these folks expected, they were busy trying to figure out which parts of the film were which. But maybe that’s the point. Comedy and tragedy aren’t so far removed. The line is fine, hence that eternal
question: Funny or sad? Take dating, for instance. It’s often one or the other — comedy or tragedy — but which one? That my sister’s fiancé dumped her because his southern family couldn’t get past the fact she’s a Yankee — from New Jersey — would have been tragic… if it weren’t so damn funny. When it happened, we sat on the edge of her bed — which was surrounded by wedding catalogues, flower arrangements, and centerpieces, no less — and laughed, and cried, and laughed some more. Then there was the little incident at The Ebbitt Room the other night. A friend got drunk and yelled at the guy I used to have a secret crush on for not loving me back. Humiliating? Yes. Hilarious? Also, yes. At least, it will be...one day. Laughing when our love lives go awry might seem absurd. It’s like getting the giggles at a funeral: inappropriate. We’re supposed to cry when things are sad or, in the case of my dating life, pathetic. But what the hell? I say laugh it up anyway, Cape Mayniacs. Inappropriate or not, it’s better than the alternative.
