Hobos
Fresh, local and organic – food made the way God intended us to eat
Where Is It? On Baltimore Avenue, just before the intersection with Second Street. Why Should I Go? Executive chef Gretchen Hanson creates food with a focus on locally-grown, organic produce and meat. She developed an appreciation for simple street foods from Mexico, Europe and the Mediterranean as well as the Middle and Far East, and has combined that with a deep understanding of contemporary fine dining. Gretchen’s formal chef training was in the classic French tradition at several of New York City’s finer restaurants. From New York she branched off to specialize in a style of her own, which she calls Global Eco-Fusion, that evolved through experience in restaurants in Europe and Mexico. The menu changes weekly to reflect the best availability of fresh produce and ingredi-
ents. Hobos pays special attention to vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free and anyone else with special dietary requirements. Hobos are as organic, clean and green as possible. They support green, local farmers first then outsource as little as possible. They have contracted with seven local farmers to buy produce throughout the season. Why Should I Go? since 1988 Jake’s has taken pride in preparing fresh, quality seafood using family recipes, whiling adding a twist to some of the newer menu items to keep up with the times. Jake’s Seafood is well-known for their delicious, homemade, prepared-to-order meals. Jake’s opened all those years ago with the philosophy of serving old Baltimore-style seafood with only the best ingredients and assuring their guests got a good value for their dollar. That mentality still stands today under the watchful eyes of Billy Klemkowski, grandson of the owner of the original Jake’s in Baltimore,
and his son Will who are both pictured above. They are constantly in the kitchen to ensure the consistency of freshness and the quality of food is maintained. This is a restaurant with history. The famous seafood bisque that guests rave about was created in their inaugural year, back in 1988, and their Maryland crab soup is a recipe that goes all the way back to 1929. The item that really put Jake’s on the map is their crab cakes. What makes their crab cakes so special is that they use the freshest and best jumbo lump crab meat available. They also offer steamed clams and mussels, a raw bar (select nights at the highway location), whole lobsters, fresh fish dishes and a great selection of meat. Anything Else I Need To Know? Jerry’s Seafood
Whether you linger at a restaurant table or perch at the large bar, you’ll enjoy irresistible creations like the incomparable Crab Bomb!
Where Is It? ON Second Street, in the heart of the Historic District in Lewes. Why Should I Go? This quintessential Lewes seafood restaurant is the home of the Crab Bomb. Now, what on earth is a Crab Bomb? Well, it takes about 50 crabs to make a Bomb because Jerry’s only uses the best of the crab – the jumbo lump – and there are only two lumps per crab. The crab meat is picked in their kitchen to ensure that there is no cartilage remaining. Then the lumps are gently mixed with Old Bay and mayonnaise. Lastly, the lumps are gently formed into a 10 oz ball approximately the size of a softball. This ball is popped into a hot, hot oven (500 degrees) and baked for about 15 minutes to a golden perfection. Served sizzling hot in a ramekin, the dish is seafood heaven, allowing
the diner to pick each jumbo lump with a fork. And for those with a smaller appetite Jerry’s offers the “Baby Bomb,” which is 6 oz of the same delicious crab. Jerry’s also has an extensive menu of seafood, fish, meat, chicken and vegetarian dishes. Their fish ‘n’ chips, served daily for lunch and dinner, as been hailed as comparable to the best in England. Stop in at lunch and try one of their salads, sandwiches or have the fire-roasted vegetables served on a rustic baguette. Pull a stool up to their 20-seat bar and choose from a wide selection offered at the full bar, and catch a game on their flat-screen televisions. Anything Else I Need To Know? Jerry’s Seafood is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, offers daily specials and has a children’s menu.

If you are looking for that authentic crab shack experience, Lazy Susan’s is the real deal. It’s a fun and laidback atmosphere without all the frills, because, really, who wants all the frills when you’re elbow deep in crabs and Old Bay? Every table in the restaurant has its own self-serve paper towel dispenser and is covered in brown paper. Food is served on tossaway plates. All this makes for convenient clean-up of the mess you’re sure to make when you tear into your crabs with a mallet or fingers. The walls are covered with photos of friends, customers and staff, as well as a great assortment of quirky decorations, ranging from neon signs to over-sized crab cut-outs. There are plenty of TVs throughout Lazy
Susan’s. You can casually watch while you dine out with friends and family, or grab a seat at the bar and cheer on your team over seafood and beers. If you’d prefer to gaze upon the outside world rather than a TV set, slide into a picnic bench on the rear patio on a warm evening and enjoy the breeze, or grab a beer from the Can Stand bar on a sunny afternoon. The kitchen sends all food out as soon as it’s ready to ensure that you get your crabs when they’re nice and hot. This gives you plenty of time to work through your mound of crustaceans. The crabs are market-priced, but in general the food at Lazy Susan’s is very reasonably priced. In addition, don’t be surprised if you order a dozen clams and end up with just a couple more on your plate. Anything Else I Need To Know? Lazy Susan’s serves up hot, fat crabs for both lunch and dinner.
