Subscriber Of The Week
Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Les Aungst of Cape May (yes, locals — you can subscribe to EZ and never miss an issue). How long have you been coming to Cape May? Since the mid-1980s. Who are you normally with? My wife. Favorite thing about Cape May? The historic Victorian preservation. Least favorite thing? The parking, and all the extra traffic during the summer. Favorite restaurants? Most of them. It’s really pretty hard to find a bad meal in Cape May. But our favorites ones are the Merion Inn, Lucky Bones and the Wine Bar at the Washington Inn. Favorite place to stay? Our house! We are permanent residents. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? That would be to get rid of the plastic porta-potties at the east end of Lafayette Street. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? The pictures. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? That you can’t pick one up at the Wawa anymore. What’s your T-shirt size? I take a men’s size extra large.
Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Quotes Of The Week
Random Factoid
“I’d much rather be a woman than a man. Women can cry, they can wear cute clothes, and they’re the first to be rescued off sinking ships.” — Gilda Radner “A ship in port is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.”— Grace Hopper “Ship happens.” — Unknown
IN 1898, before Titanic was designed, a retired merchant marine wrote Futility or The Wreck of the Titan. The book was about a ship that hit an iceberg and sank as it attempted to cross the Atlantic faster than any ship had. It’s said to contain chilling similarities to the real-life disaster that happened 14 years later.

Talk Of The Town
Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
A New Man At The Ebbitt IT might seem a little bit like changing your quarterback halfway through the season, but one of Cape May’s finest restaurants has brought in a new Executive Chef. The Ebbitt Room last week replaced Lucas Manteca with Tony Micari, who left his post at the new Revel Resort in Atlantic City for the much more genteel surroundings of beautiful Jackson Street, home of the Virginia Hotel, which is, in turn, home of The Ebbitt Room. So why make a change in the middle of August? “We had the opportunity to bring Tony on to our team and we are very happy to welcome him back. I worked closely with Tony when I promoted him to Executive Chef while I was general manager of the Chelsea,” said Patrick Logue, Director of Operations of Cape Resorts Group, which owns The Virginia Hotel, along with Congress Hall, the Beach Shack and the Chelsea in Atlantic City. Chef Tony said he is “excited to be able to build on The Ebbitt Room’s legacy of innovative American cuisine.” And, not surprisingly, he can’t wait to get his hands dirty at the company’s 65-acre Beach Plum Farm, in West Cape May, where he can partake in the farm-to-table revolution that’s taking hold in America (and what a very good thing that is). “To be able to visit a farm that’s less than two miles from your restaurant and pick fresh produce you can make that night… that’s a chef’s dream,” said Tony. Tony worked at the Chelsea from 20082010 as chef de cuisine of the hotel’s Chelsea Prime restaurant, which was awarded the distinction of “Best New Restaurant in South
Jersey” by New Jersey Monthly during his tenure (we can add that the filet mignon there is the best steak dish we have EVER eaten). He then went on to work as Executive Chef at the acclaimed BLT Steak restaurant in Manhattan before joining the Revel. “We’ve had a history of bringing in talented young chefs at The Ebbitt Room,” said Patrick Logue. “Back at the beginning, there was Joe Lotozo and Chris Hubert, who are two of the best-known, well-loved chefs in town. Later we developed Andy Carthy, who joined us as a dishwasher and went on to cook dinner at the James Beard House in New York. And we’re grateful to Lucas Manteca, who continued that tradition for the past three years – we wish him well in his future entrepreneurial endeavors.” Lucas, the dashing, surf-loving Argentinian who brought a touch of Latin flair to The Ebbitt Room, isn’t about to take a break from working in the kitchen. He and his wife Deanna Ebner took over the Cape May Point General Store earlier this year, winning rave reviews for their breakfast concoctions in particular. Now, Lucas is throwing himself into the endeavor full-time – as of this week The Red Store (the name of their restaurant) is now serving dinner. So what can we expect from Chef Lucas? “I’m extremely excited to open for dinner. I’ve been shopping all morning from local farm stands for food — peaches, corn, tomatoes, eggplant. We’re going to be changing the menu weekly, based on what’s fresh. We’re dividing the menu, into sections: raw, seconds, thirds and something sweet. You can sample from whichever, or do a tasting from all. We want you to leave satisfied, but not uncomfortably full. Whichever dish you
want from that section will cost the same. It’s very bistro style.” We’re excited to see what Tony brings to The Ebbitt Room, which is still one of Cape May’s unmissable dining experiences. And we’re excited to try dinner at The Red Store, too.
Line In The Sand IN ANY town, it’s difficult to find activities that are enjoyable for the whole family — kids, text-crazy teeny-boppers, and Great, Great, Great Aunt Mildred. For 12 years, one such event has been Cape May’s amateur sand sculpting contest — run by New York-based sculpter Matt Long, who you might recognize from his regular spot on the Travel Channel’s Sand Masters. We know how much the community looked forward to this event… last year, there were nearly 80 entrants, some in teams of up to 10, and many planned their vacations around it, according to Matt. And we know how much he looked forward to the contest, too. “This has always been my passion; I love putting it on, And I love Cape May,” he told us. So we were surprised to receive an email a couple weeks back from the city saying that this year’s event, scheduled for August 3, would be canceled. Michael Chait, Cape May’s Assistant Director of Marketing, cited a scheduling conflict when we emailed asking for an explanation. So, last week, we met up with the sculptor to find out what that could be. When we found him on the beach, he was busy making a castle by the water’s edge.

Page 14
Thursday, August 16, 2012 hurt he had felt earlier in the year when he’d been in town for a sculpting event sponsored by Congress Hall. “I had a small window to make the sculpture,” he told us, “so I asked the city if they wouldn’t mind having their beachcomber make me the pile of sand I needed the night before. They told me they couldn’t do it, because the sculpture was for Congress Hall.” In preparing for this year’s contest, Matt submitted a proposal to the city, asking not for his “regular day rate for sculpting” — upwards of $2,500 per job — but that his $1,000 stipend for this year’s contest be paid, along with his meals and accommodation. “I was looking for two rooms for two days,” he said. “I don’t mind traveling. Wildwood would have worked.” Michael Chait responded to matt by saying that he would check with City Manager Bruce MacLeod, and then, ultimately, that this expense “wasn’t in the budget.” We couldn’t help but wonder if the city had reached out to any local hotels who might be willing to put up Matt and his family free of charge, so we emailed Michael Chait. “It is unfortunate that the contest did not coincide with Mr Long’s vacation as it has in previous years,” he responded. “His fees for the event almost tripled and it’s not something the city anticipated. The program was canceled for 2012 and will be re-evaluated for the future.” We’re hoping this will be the last year without a sand sculpting contest in Cape May, and we plan on doing what we can to make sure that is the case. It’s an event that’s good for everyone involved.
Tag, You’re (Paying For) It Matt Long, in front of one of his creations at last year’s sand sculpting contest... Aleksey Moryakov
Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 “Things change,” he said, brushing the sand from his knees. “It’s upsetting. I really enjoyed it. I ran it out of my own expenses.” At least, Matt explained, he ran the contest out of his own expenses for the first nine years, and always during his own Cape May vacation. Then, it got to be too much. Without factoring the cost of his time (soliciting sponsorships, writing press releases, maintaining the contest’s website, running sand sculpting clinics in the month leading up to the contest, and devoting two vacation days each year to making the event happen), expenses added up to approximately $2,500. It would have been more, had he needed to pay for help, but Matt and his family assem-
bled a team of 15 volunteers each year, bringing in friends from New York and Pennsylvania. Matt emailed then-Director of Recreation, Terry Brown, explaining the situation, and in response, the city awarded him a yearly stipend of $1,000. “It still wasn’t enough to cover expenses,” he said, “but again, I loved doing this contest.” And, he says, the event had always coincided with his own vacation, so he was putting out for the hotel room, anyway. But this year, the city scheduled the event without checking with Matt first, and it did not line up with the sculptor’s own trip to Cape May. When this glitch had happened in year’s past, the city had rescheduled, but Matt was told this wouldn’t be the case this year. Adding to this disappointment was the
NO ONE likes dishing out cash — that’s a given. But the way we figure it, if you don’t like the beautiful beaches of Cape May enough to contribute to their upkeep, then you’re not all that much of a beach lover to begin with. We’re talking about beach tags — those little plastic pieces you can’t set foot on Cape May sand without. The people tasked with distributing these tags — and collecting the money for them — are vilified in this town… more so, even, than the bike cops who write those $35 parking tickets. We call them “yellow shirts,” but for taggers, we reserve the harshest names: “tag hags,” “beach naggers,” “beach Nazis.” You’re not as sweet as you appear, Cape May. At least, not according to Michele Godwin, a tagger of two years. “I once had a group of women kick sand at me when they found out they needed to

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 buy tags,” Michele told us. We caught up with her at the entrance to Perry Street beach, sitting underneath her blue umbrella, next to a little area of toys — a brain teaser, a windmill, and a “motion duck” — she sets up for the wee ones. “The ladies ended up sitting on a bench on the promenade, yelling obscenities and continuously taunting me. They said I’d be better off on welfare instead of doing a job that’s not honest, because the Lord is who gives us the beach. I had to be transferred from Windsor Avenue to Perry Street, in case they came back. I just smiled. I figured I’d eat them up with my happiness.” And then there’s the hassle of dealing with the elements. “If it’s pouring rain, we’re still out here,” Michele says. And never mind having to deal with the heat. “That’s a killer, and we’re not allowed in the ocean,” she says. And never mind the one and only bathroom break. It’s the nasty treatment that’s the toughest to deal with, and it’s all a part of daily life for Michele, who’s had people hail her like Hitler, compare her to a used car salesman, throw beach safety brochures in her face, set up camp nearly on top of her after being refused beach access and, just
three days ago, steal her umbrella. “These guys decided to parade down the beach with it,” she said. “Like a giant mushroom. We found it later, buried about 20 feet into the dunes.” Then, she says, there are the people who try and sneak around her. “They’ll show me a homemade tag, or one from another town. That’s why I’m so familiar with the tags from Long Beach Island. You’ve got to give these guys credit.” And the people who, even worse, try to sneak their kids around her. “If you’re under 12, you get on the beach for free,” she explained. “So a child will have a little mustache and yet parents will say he’s 11.” The locals, who sometimes feel entitled to the beaches of Cape May, are no better than the tourists, Michele says. They often grow disgruntled because they didn’t realize there was a tag rule in place or because their hotel mistakenly (intentionally?) led them to believe the price of a tag would be included in their stay. “People expect me to recognize them,” Michele said. “I feel like saying, ‘You’re special, but I just can’t.’” It’s a shame that beach-goers would take their frustrations out on the taggers, Michele says, because they’re good people. you leave behind (tsk, tsk) or for findng lost children. “It happens a lot,” Michele said. “It happened this morning.” Michele points to her mother, Mary, who’s been tagging for four years, as an example. “She works four jobs, she is raising an adopted child, and she cares for a deaf woman with a disability in her spare time,” she told us. “I get goosebumps just thinking about her. Often times, when they’re being mean, people don’t consider that.” But the job is made worth it, Michele says, by all of the “incredible” people she meets, who more than make up for the bad apples. “I call them my sandy family,” she told us. “There is rarely a day that goes by that someone doesn’t bring me lemonade, a sandwich or a salad. They’ll even pour cold water from the ocean on me to help me cool off if I ask them.” Some go above and beyond. “I have bone cancer,” Michele said. “And I’ve had people bring me information, mulitvitamins, even a Mayo Clinic book.” As if to confirm that this “sandy family” does exist, a thirty-something couple made their way past us and on to the promenade as we finished up our interview with Michele. They joked about how much they looked

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 forward to hassling her the following day. We asked the gentleman what he thought of having to buy his way on to the beach. “In all seriousness,” he said, “tags are a good thing. I don’t mind paying at all.” Our thoughts, exactly. “The bottom line,” Michele said, “is that these beaches are beautiful… I don’t get a bonus for saying it.” She also, contrary to popular thinking, doesn’t get any kind of bonus for selling more tags, and she has to pay to get on the beach, too. “If I come on my day off without one,” she said, “ I’m not allowed on. That’s the rule. Just keep it clean and buy the tag. This place is worth the money.”
Singer Songwriter Spotlight ERIK SIMONSEN is next up in the Singer Songwriter Showcase currently running in Congress Hall’s Boiler Room, a preview of sorts to the annual Singer Songwriter Cape May event in the spring. The event, if you don’t know by now, runs each Wednesday night through August, starts with an Open Mic hosted by Don Shaw at 8:30, and is followed by a different featured singer song-
writer each week. Erik is no stranger to the venue, having been active on the Cape May music scene for more than 20 years now (which, by the way, you certainly can’t tell by looking at him). “Erik is one of our favorite entertainers,” says Myra Vassian, the Entertainment Director over at Congress Hall. “Whether he’s performing as a solo artist in the Brown Room or with his band, Twelve:01 at the Nail or the Boiler Room, he’s got great energy and solid, honest musicianship.” Simonsen will perform original material as a solo act next Wednesday, August 22, but he told us he may have a couple of guys from the Twelve:01 there to jam with him, too. “We’ve has released four CD’s, and our sound is mostly rock, with some funk and blues thrown in,” Erik tells us. For his singer songwriter gig, Erik says he plans to play to the crowd. “After a fair number of years in this business, you learn how to read what the audience wants. Sometimes they are there to sit and listen, sometimes to get
up and move around. You have to be able to respond with a fair amount of variety.” And what are his feelings about playing the Boiler Room? “It’s just a great, great venue that’s completely geared for live music — they’re completely set up for it,” Erik says. “Some venues you play they just move a couple of tables out of the way and you’re on your own - and sweep those French fries away while you’re at it. At the Boiler Room, they’ve got a sound guy and even if it gets really crowded, they have the TV’s there so you can still see what’s going on.” With a “real” job to go to every day, we had to ask the question — doesn’t the life of a musician get to be a little bit too much? “It is hard, and in years past I’ve had a lot traveling and late nights. And I’ve seen some people let it pull them in the wrong direction. Some come back from it, some don’t. It’s something you have to watch, and I do. But I love it, or I wouldn’t still be doing it.”
PARTING SHOT
Dont’ miss “Jaws” on the beach this Thursday, August 16. We’ve said it before (in this spot, actually) and we’ll say it again... it’s a magical experience. Especially when the movie is an underrated classic like “Jaws”. And with all of the meteor showers happening recently, you might get an even greater show than you bargain for. In case you’re busy, this week, “How To Train Your Dragon” is what’s on deck for August 23.

Local Gallery Owners Host A Stunning Tribute
John and Dawn DeMayo of the Victorian Walk Gallery display the work of Thomas Kinkaide like never before
T
HE work of the late Thomas Kinkade, the most collected living artist of his time — his paintings hang in approximately one of every 20 American homes — will be honored with a legacy celebration in Cape May this weekend. On Saturday, August 18, from 11am to 2pm, the largest collection of Kinkade’s work ever assembled on the east coast will be on display in Convention Hall as part of a free museum exhibit. A great deal of the pieces are from the Kinkade family’s personal collection, and many have never traveled outside of California. Later this night, from 6 to 9pm, Kinkade’s brother Patrick will reveal, for the first time, the last painting the artist worked on before his death, as well as a video chronicling the man’s legacy. Tickets are available through the Victorian Walk Gallery on Ocean Street, owned by the event hosts, Dawn and John DeMayo. On Sunday, to round out the celebration, a Champagne brunch for collectors will take place here, the oldest Thomas Kinkade signature gallery in the country.
Thomas Kinkade and his brother as young boys... Patrick will reveal the painter’s last piece on Saturday, August 18. Cape May’s landscapes were especially inspirational for Kinkade, who would paint the local scenery in a pair of overalls at the urging of his wife, who didn’t want him to ruin his clothes. “He fell in love with Cape May,” Dawn DeMayo says. “Once word got out that Kinkade was painting at Cape May Point, so many people came out to see him there that the police had to be called to manage the crowd.” One of the painter’s favorite subjects
was the lighthouse. “Cape May Light, which clings to the southernmost tip of New Jersey,” he once said, “is far-famed for its stately height and majestic simplicity of line. To me, it is an emblem of faith and hope, reminding us that we endure life’s storms only through the grace of God.” Christian values informed the work of the painter, who raised more than $2 million for The Salvation Army after 9/11 by creating custom images the charity used in its fundraising efforts. “People who put my paintings on their walls are putting their values on the wall,” he was quoted as saying in The New York Times. “Faith, family, home, a simpler way of living, the beauty of natural, quiet, tranquility, peace, joy and hope.” It was important to Kinkade that his art be uplifting and understandable, and his hope was that his work would help people to appreciate art. Today, works donated by Kinkade hang in the White House, Vatican, Tate Museum in London, and St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. For more information, call (609) 8984200.

The Undertow
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever
T
HE O’Brien Five didn’t get out for our usual Sunday excursion this week on account of me being fried from my summer schedule, so we hit North Cape May Community Pool for a few hours instead of spending 83% of my paycheck on a crab cake sandwich and diet soda in Cape May. The pool, despite its pointless and aggressive lack of shade (man, I really AM grumpy this week… but would it kill them to stick a few more trees in there? A bush? A shrub? A pink flamingo?) is a fine place to waste an afternoon. The water is cool, you’re bound to run into a friend or neighbor, and the lifeguards are on top of it. Also, the snack bar has a load of solid, microwaveable American fare (burgers, cheese steaks) along with a fine assortment of sodas, various Ades and chips and such. It’s reasonably priced ($27 to feed our family) — just don’t go in expecting haute cuisine and you won’t be disappointed. Regardless, this is all coming off a little harsher than intended (I’m in a terrible frame of mind for writing frivolity), but the pool is a fun place to hang out with your family, this grumpy writer aside.
But a couple of things DID make me happy this week, the first of which was the speedy and courteous service I received at King Discount Tires in Villas, or Green Creek, or one of those place on Route 47 between my house and Philadelphia. Dave (if I recall correctly) was able to plug my tire (insert fat and/or sex joke here) after someone placed a beer bottle under my tire in the Rio Station parking lot, and save me some real money which I’ll be able to waste some other time later in the year. I’ve been to King five or six times in the last couple of years and I’m always in and out in about half an hour (insert sex joke here), and it was quite entertaining watching rough, burly, bearded Dave train his 16-year-old female assistant
who I’m sure was giving him a crash course in all things Twilight while he fixed my tire. How COULD you, Kristen Stewart. You broke R-Patz’ heart! We then swung by the Exit Zero Store to pick up my pay (a sack of magic beans and a handful of gift certificates) and enjoyed a pizza pie from Mario’s and some fro-go from Bonnie’s Toppings. Fellow EZ ink-stained wretch Kate Chadwick recommended the Cake Batter yogurt, which I mixed with the Cappuccino, then didn’t sleep for four days. Cathrine and I have been patronizing Mario’s since the mid90s and it never fails to deliver a solid meal. All in all a yummy afternoon. Royalty Check of the Week: $69 for MurderOke! At this rate, in 324 years I can finally retire! I’m a huge Victor Grasso fan (though I try to show a little decorum and not splash it on every paragraph of my column… I reserve that honor for Will Knapp… DING!) and I can’t imagine a more ideal setting for him than the opening of his new art show at the SOMA; in a room full of people telling him how great he is,

surrounded by pictures of himself that he painted. Ego, meet Id. Id? Ego. (I kid Victor because, well, have you SEEN his abs?) His work is always stunning, including the covers he did for my fourshort-stories-in-four-months (failed) experiment in EZ back in ’08. “Murder at the Mug”, “Captain Mey & the Fire From the Sky”, “The Butcher of the Point”, and “The Boat” were all better for his participation. And it is my hope his work will grace the cover of my second short story collection coming out in three weeks. (Sorry, just read somewhere recently that Jack Wright isn’t afraid of deadlines…) Speaking of Jack Wright, he popped into the Boiler Room for some Terry O’ke Thursday night to sing a couple of songs and marvel with the rest of us at the performance of Dave Mansuedo, a Pittsburgh native who drops into Cape May once a year to humble me (how can I be the best singer in the world with Dave running around out there?), and who Jack said was “some kind of Jim Morrison/Simple Minds guy… it’ll come to me…” which was stunningly appropriate since Dave had just lit up the house with “Break on Through” and “Don’t You Forget About Me.” (In Jack’s defense, he had been drinking.) Dave is one of those guys who bring a little sunshine to the drudgery of my life… besides my wife and kids, that is. Samantha Safdie also made her annual appearance at Terry O’ke to brighten up my night. If you’ve never met Samantha (wanna hear my Tony Danza impersonation? Samanthuh… Monuh… Angeluh… It’s really more of an audio joke) she is like a Disney Princess come to life, all pretty and nice, birds on her fingers… it’s disgusting. We sang “A Whole New World” from Aladdin and the crowd just EXPLODED. All because of me, I’m sure. Samantha is a SAG-AFTRA union actress who hopes to participate in the Murder-Oke! movie currently being discussed. I hope to participate in that movie too, Samantha.
Butt-Hole of the Week: Frank Scott, photographer extraordinaire and Terry O’ke Nazi, for horning in on Murder-Oke! producer Jon Sachar last week and pitching his own movie. “So this guy, about 50, silver hair and glasses, walks into a bar full of drunk women just released from prison…” Dick move, but I’d TOTALLY go see that movie. There are mirrors on the wall in the Boiler Room. Now, there are several instances I can think of where having mirrors on the wall would be cool, but NOT when you’re a chubby, sweaty karaoke host who sees his glistening face every time you turn around. The benefit? When the beads of sweat line up just right with the light you get a free mirror ball. I am the lightest I’ve been in about five years at 228.5 lbs. Celebrity Sighting of the Week: Jimmy Buffett was apparently docked at South Jersey Marina for a few days last week (he has a new gig in AC which, I’m told, you should “do”), and it’s a real shame he didn’t venture into Wildwood or one of my karaoke shows because I would have LOVED the opportunity to stuff a parrot down his throat. Last Week’s Question: “Why does every Morey’s water slide end up with me getting sledgehammered in the balls?” This Week’s Question: “Why do 228.5 lb slug-like columnists go on water slides?” Touche, life. Touche. Speaking of Morey’s (and when aren’t I?) if you’ve seen Jack Morey the last few weeks you know he’s been on crutches nursing a busted knee brought on, so he says, by an overzealous Weimaraner. The real story? He went on Ghost Ship and messed with the wrong zombie. I mean, which story is more believable? Or less believable. But I have to say, I love working for Jack and Will Morey (R-Freeholder). Why, just last week they gave me a new office in the basement. Have you seen my stapler? Eight weeks ’til Morey’s Fears. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Step Into The Theater For A Great New Show
F
“The 39 Steps” Brings Broadway Talent — and a lot of laughs — to Cape May Stage... by Catherine Dugan
ROM the moment Artistic Director Roy Steinberg steps on stage as Hitchcock, the audience is invited to participate in the game that is The 39 Steps. Director Penny Bergman uses every trick in her extensive theatrical book to bring the tale — of a handsome bachelor caught up with spies — to life. Four actors play all the roles, and only Mark Campbell, as leading man Richard Hannay, plays just one person. Nicole Lowrence plays three female roles, and Ron Piretti and David Deblinger share the remaining hundred-odd roles, playing everything from cops, to villains, to dogs. There’s physical comedy, quick costume changes, and the sort of theater magic that invites howls of laughter. The show is a treat for theater lovers, film buffs, and anyone who enjoys a good time. Campbell commands your interest, folding his tall body — and his facial features — in ways you can’t believe. You root for him from the first moment. Lowrence disappears into her three roles, alternating between sexy and shy while remaining consistently comic. There’s no mystery why Hannay gets
“involved” with her. Deblinger and Piretti are brilliant, sometimes playing multiple characters within one conversation. They are a study in acting technique, if only you could stop laughing long enough to see how they do it. There are planes, trains and automobiles — even some sheep, a waterfall, and a mythical creature — as Hannay eludes police and pursues the truth. Rippling scarves suggest the wind, coordinated bumping suggests the train, and shadow puppets show the Loch Ness monster giving a piggy back ride. The actors are everywhere, turning the Robert Shackleton Playhouse into a playground, and the audience into props. My

kids, who know nothing of Hitchcock, and their grandmother, laughed their heads off. They wanted to include the stage hands, who are essential to the quick transitions, in the standing ovation. The 39 Steps by Patrick Barlow, from the novel by John Buchan and the film by Alfred Hitchcock, is licensed by ITV Global Entertainment Limited. The play’s original concept is by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon. Penny Bergman directs this fabulous team effort. Lighting design is by Matthew Miler, scenery by Robert J. Martin, costumes by Michele Sinacore and sound by Benjamin Loverin, who is also the production stage manager. B.H. Barry is the movement consultant, Blayze Teicher is assistant to Ms Bergman. Korogo is by Amanda Psareas, Taylor Cawely and Katie O’Neill, and Lisa Shames, Adele Marks and Kate Kampschroeder are the running crew. See The 39 Steps at Cape May Stage through September 7, Tuesdays through Sundays at 8pm. The play runs two hours, with intermission, and is appropriate for ages 10 and up. Put the paper down. The Movie Column
I
By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival
T’S harvest time. Not tomatoes or lima beans — a whole new crop of fresh films from the Cape May Film Camp ready for viewing at www. youtube.com/capemayfilm. These are among the best films we’ve ever screened, which not unlike a fruitful field is the result of a variety of near-perfect conditions. We started with a great group of students who were nearly hand-picked from among the best of years past and a few new faces. Next, a magnificently creative team of group leaders. And when those two conditions are met, it’s fertile ground for a garden of exciting ideas! Here’s a summary of this year’s films. All You Knead: This film is about the bread baker on Sunset Boulevard. You may know that she makes the best bread in the area, but what you don’t see is the organic farming that goes on there. You camper hosts take you on a tour to learn about this eco-friendly attraction that’s as tasty as it is trendy. All for You: Love and rejection take on new meaning in this thriller that explores
A scene from one of the Cape May Film Camp film projects, Solitude the more suspicious side of relationships, moving on, and clinging close! Featuring prominent sites of Cape May including our beloved zoo, this film presents the experimental side of camp filmmaking. The Pick-Up Artists: When a dejected bunch of guys are lamenting over how and where to meet girls during their summer at the shore, they turn to a self-proclaimed master of the pick up arts. What they don’t know is that the master is in need of a few
lessons himself. Solitude: Left home alone for weeks, Rose begins to yearn for human interaction in this creepy tale brilliantly acted and beautifully filmed. Suspense and surprise come together to provide a story that is unnerving and edgy. Thanks to JC Stinson, Camp Director, for keeping the teams on task. Team leaders Jeff Giordano, Ari Blau, Wesley Laudeman, and Collin Pritchard provided the filmmaking acumen to direct the students’ efforts as they created their projects, faced some challenges, overcame some difficulties, and ultimately pulled together like a well-oiled Hollywood studio. Many thanks to the Cape May County Division of Culture and Heritage for their continued support, Gail and Peer Schmidtchen, Bob and Lisa Anderson, the Kiwanis of Cape May County, and Richmond Shreve and Marguerite Chandler for their ongoing help. Remember to visit www.youtube. com/capemayfilm to see the films, or you can request a DVD by calling or texting 609-326-FEST.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
BELIEVE I have on occasion regaled you with tales of our city’s long association with ships. Of how Captain Kidd’s ship was not only moored in Cape May often, but that it lies buried in the sand still laden with gold and silver, waiting for me to remember exactly where I buried it; of how the whole of Cape May is actually a sailing vessel ready to set (huge) sail and leave the mainland when civilization falls; of how Captain Nemo used Cape May as base for his Nautilus and much much more. Why, every month on the night of the full moon, the Cape May Privateers’ Club meets in the sunken (yet intact: see an earlier column of mine in this very rag) ballroom of the Concrete Ship to drink fine single malts and tell salty tales of buccaneers and lashings, keel haulings and the cat o’ nine tails, and more, usually involving lithe young lads and lasses in various states of undress, oil, and corporal punishment. Some of the legendary names of the high seas are there: Davy Jones (of the “locker” fame, not that recently-departed Monkee),
Admiral Nimitz, Captain Pugwash and his trusty deputies, Master Bates and Seaman Staines, Horatio Nelson, that famed Scotch adventurer Cochrane and Ishmael. And more, many more. I swear you can hear the dull clink of glass eyes, the clank of hook hands on pint glasses and the thud of peg legs on wooden boards. Why do we meet here? Well, the truth is, that Cape May has a unique set of tides and currents, unmatched in this world in strength and depth. Sooner or later they

bring every wreck ever sunk to our coastline, to be washed up on the beach if not for our ceaseless watch, to intercept them in the dead of night so the beach is not littered in them come morning. The Titanic (listen not to that blowhard Cameron), The Flying Dutchman, The Bismark, The Golden Hind: they have all washed up, and all were swiftly towed back off shore, loaded with rocks and sunk again. But we are careful to remove the cargoes, for safekeeping, of course. And so the bowels of the Concrete Ship are stuffed with Incan gold, silver bars, priceless gems and the lot of a thousand vessels. And our Club is decorated in the salvage of a thousand wrecks: the crockery is from the Lusitania, the candlesticks from The Queen Anne, the silverware from The Mary Rose and the grand table from The Marie Celeste. But before you don mask and snorkel and come looking for loot, let me mention casually that here also resides the Kraken. And if you stray close he WILL awake, and consume you, because I shall spot you and phone his cell.

EACH week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. This week’s recipient is Tomislava Fuchedzhieva, age 23, of Bulgaria, who is living in Cape May for the summer. What are you up to today? I just had lunch with a friend at Buongiorno Coffee Shop. We spent the morning on the beach, as you can tell by the way I’m dressed. Do you have any plans for later? No real plans — we’re just going to chill out. Later we’ll probably head over to Cabanas for a drink. When is the last time you got some flowers? The last time I got flowers was for my birthday, which was on February 19. So this is great — thank you! PHOTO BY GABI URDA... FLOWERS BY KATE’S

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady Perhaps it’s old-fashioned, but when I purchase something, I’d like to be thanked. Recently I made a large purchase at a local shop, and the bag was shoved unceremoniously toward me followed by total silence — which was better than the grunt I got last time (same shop, different person). I nod, smile and go on my way, but should I say something to the person? To the owner? Let it go? I love the shop, so don’t want to boycott it. If I were the owner, I’d want to know. I don’t take it personally but that kind of treatment reflects on all of us in an area that depends on tourist satisfaction. While we’re on the subject of gratitude, if a purchase is followed by “have a nice day,” does that equal “thank you”? Maybe I’m just a curmudgeon but I like to hear “thank you.”
—Thankless Dear Thankless The Answer Lady speaks fluent curmudgeon, and no, expecting to hear “thank you” after giving someone money in exchange for something is not out of bounds. The Answer Lady is not certain that lecturing the offender is the best course of action, though, particularly if there are people in line behind you. Perhaps the next time someone hands over your purchase without a word, you can say
“You’re welcome!” as loudly and cheerfully as you can; a tad passive-aggressive, but should do the trick. The Answer Lady is not opposed to bringing your dissatisfaction to the attention of the owner or manager, so long as it is done in a civilized fashion — speaking with them directly, or a phone call or email later if they’re not available. And posting an anonymous rant on one of those ‘rate every single thing that happened to you today’ websites is NOT the same thing. If more people said please and thank you, the world be a happier place and the Answer Lady’s life would be easier. Dear Answer Lady My girlfriend always thanks me after sex. Is that weird? — Wondering Dear Wondering Presumably you are not purchasing the sex from her... so, no. Look at it this way: she could be saying “have a nice day” instead, like the clerks in the above scenario, and that would be really perplexing. Well done, sir — keep up the good work.

What’s Your Story?
Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? What’s your name and where are you from? Sarah Rupp from Dillsburg, Pennsylvania. What are you doing here? I just got here this morning for vacation. I love this rainy weather, except when I want to go to the beach. I’ve gone from the beach to my house, and back again hoping for sun. What were you doing when we interrupted you? I was just walking around. But my plans for the day, and the rest of my vacation, is this: breakfast, beach, shopping, repeat. Tonight I am going to have a Westside Market hoagie for dinner. The theme for this week’s issue of Exit Zero is “ship.” Have you ever been on one? Does the Cape May-Lewes Ferry count? T
Chatting It Up With The Men And Women Who Dock In Cool Cape May... by Caroline Wenzel
HE name of this week’s featured boat, Rearin’ To Go, is a perfect fit for Susan Seckinger’s lifestyle. She just bought the 27-foot Blackfin, a perfect size for fishing, fun day trips, or evenings out on the water. Its sleek exterior was still shiny with new paint. What’s your name and where are you from? My name is Susan Seckinger and I am from Penn’s Landing. I am here with a man that I used to date when I was 16. We both married other people initially, but three years ago we got back together. Now here we are. He always loved boats so we bought this one together. And since we live on a river, we were tired of seeing everyone’s boats, and being without. I drove down here and he drove the boat down to make sure there were no problems. How long have you had this boat? Almost a full day now! It is a very, very recent addition to our collection of belongings. Just like our new puppy, Gus... we got him last week. We are leaving, actually right now, to take the boat back up home.
Did you own a boat before this one? Never. But he had a 72-foot Tiffany before so he knows what he is doing, unlike myself. How did you choose the name of your boat? Rearin’ To Go was my boyfriend’s idea. I named the dog, he gets to name the boat. But this boat is just for fun trips so we thought the name would fit well. We just want to have fun and we always want to get up and do something. How have you been enjoying your short time here in Cape May? I had a bad experience at the motel I was supposed to
stay at last night. They were not too fond of poor little Gus. So we had to find another place to stay. It turned out good in the end because where we stayed was great — it’s called The Palace. We had dinner at the Lobster House last night and this morning we ate at Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grille. Both were delicious. Are you excited to get out on the open sea for the first time? I can’t wait. We had a relaxing morning so I want to get back into my usual go-go lifestyle. We’re heading up the bay, and I’m not worried, because if all else fails, I’m a great swimmer.

Here is a handy and comprehensive list of ideas to get you started. 1. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive, educational and handson activities, visitors can make a connection with the past by experiencing it. The many authentically restored homes, amid idyllic shaded areas, make it hard to not feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier
when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. There is a themed event every weekend — Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 898-2300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. 2. They even have a bar onboard! For more information or to book a reservation, call 800-64FERRY or visit www.capemaylewesferry.com. 4. Visitors to the exhibit will be treated to rare photographs, video and a multitude of artifacts showcasing the years immediately before and after the city’s Urban Renewal movement. The exhibit will be open daily through November 4 and admission is free. Gallery hours vary. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit capemaymac.org. 5. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off
Page 92 Cape May, but it’s still a big thrill to see these beautiful creatures. Cape May Whale & Dolphin Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. And, as the name implies, you might even see a whale. Tours take off from Wilson Avenue. If the ship is docked you can see it on your left as you cross the small bridge before the Lobster House on your way out of town. For directions or more information, call (609) 8980055 or visit them on the web at www.capemaywhalewatch.com. 6. Historic Haunts House Tour Get into the Victorian spirit on a guided tour of the historic (and some say haunted) Physick Estate, and learn about the Victorians’ fascination with spiritualism, as well as today’s modern ‘“ghost-hunting” methods. Packet includes a clue sheet and map that will take you on a self-guided discovery tour. Packets for the entire family are available for $5. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit
Thursday, August 16, 2012 www.capemaymac.org. 8. The Museum Shop carries souvenirs, books, videos and other maritime items. Admission to the Visitors Orientation Center and the ground floor of the lighthouse is free. Purchase tickets at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth.
Admission is $7 and includes a booklet that describes the plants found in numbered areas throughout the property. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 11. Bay Springs Alpaca Farm This one’s hard to believe, but Cape May has an alpaca farm. Visit them between 10am and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays and see how alpaca fiber is spun into yarn, or shop at their store which carries many alpaca-related items (forget wool: go with an alpaca sweater this winter!) And don’t forget to greet the grazing alpacas – they make it all possible. Call (609) 884-0563 or visit www.bayspringsalpacas.comfor more information. 12. From the waterparks in Delaware, to Victorian architecture in Cape May, if you aren’t visiting both sides of the Twin Capes, you’re missing half the fun.

A Shoebie’s Life
H
A new advice column on vacationing in Cape May... by Irving Spiff, Jr
ELLO, my name is Irving and I am a shoebie. For the uninformed, a shoebie is a nickname for anyone who isn’t considered a true local. If you weren’t born in Cape May or have a diploma from Cape May High or Lower Cape May Regional, then you too are a shoebie. Being a shoebie isn’t a bad thing, as long as you’re respectful and do it the right way. The quickest way to distinguish yourself as a shoebie in Cape May is to call the road that runs parallel to the beach Beach Avenue. Believe me, them’s fightin’ words in America’s Oldest Seaside Resort. To the locals, it will always be known as Beach Drive and you don’t want to challenge that. Some will even insist that the street signs once said Beach Drive, but were changed by some unknown person or group. I found two old maps of Cape May from the 19th century online and they both label it as Beach Avenue, but I don’t know much more about it than that. I consulted with
Exit Zero’s Historical Editor Ben Miller, and he told me it there is evidence of both names being used in Cape May’s past, but Beach Avenue is the official name registered with the county. He tells me it’s a county road, whatever that means. This name dispute becomes especially important if you use a GPS or computer program for directions. Make sure to type the address in with Beach Avenue,
regardless of what anyone tells you. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself in North Cape May, driving parallel to the Delaware Bay. Trust me on this, many a wayward traveler gets lost each year due to that exact situation. If a hotel clerk, waitress or anyone else calls it Beach Drive, do not take it upon yourself to try and educate them. Don’t. You will end up looking like a jerk and potentially, getting into a heated argument with an offended local. Imagine how you would feel if some stranger came to your house and corrected you on one of the most traveled roads in your own hometown. That whole “Don’t try to educate the locals” thing is good advice in general. For one, this is their town and they know it in a completely different way than we ever will. Respect that. Secondly, it’s rude. Nobody appreciates unsolicited advice or corrections.

kets like Duckie’s and No Frills on Broadway, along with Beach Plum Farm and Rea’s Farm on Stevens Street carry some of the freshest produce around. Which brings us to.... 24. Visit A Farmers Market Better yet, visit two farmers markets! On Tuesdays through August 28, the West Cape May Farmers Market is the place to be from 3-7:30pm for vendors, activities, great food and live entertainment. The market is located behind the West Cape May Firehall. Head over West Cape May bridge to the Cape May Lewes Ferry Terminal in North Cape May on Saturdays through August 25 from 9am1pm for local produce, baked goods, artisan crafts and more. 25. Parasail You don’t need to be a daredevil to rise 500 feet above the ocean, nor do you need a pair of wings. Parasailing has become a popular pastime that lets you soar above the coast and see Cape May from a perspective most people will never enjoy. It may be a view to die for, but we can assure you that you won’t be risking anything – the boat captains are coast guard certified and extremely safe. There are two great options to choose from. East Coast Parasail in Cape May at Utsch’s Marina, (609) 8988359; Atlantic Parasail at the Two Mile Landing restaurant and marina on Ocean Drive highway, (609) 5221869. 26. Lighthouse Storytime Bring your children to the Education Center in Cape May Point State Park to listen to nautical tales and lighthouse adventure stories. Storytime is at 12pm every Sunday through September 2. Better yet, admission is free. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 27. Sunset Beach The name says it all — follow Sunset Boulevard until it ends, then watch the sun sink beyond the jutting concrete ship. “God Bless America” is played as a veteran’s casket flag is lowered
each day from May until September. After the ceremony, grab some food at the Grille or enjoy the incredible deals in the gift shop. There’s a long beach strewn with Cape May diamonds, or play a round of minigolf at Sunset Beach! 28. Self-Guided Audio Tour of Cape May Discover the Historic District of Victorian Cape May at your own pace with hand-held audio units leading the way. The $10 tour package comes complete with a map and index for 96 historic buildings on 69 sites. To start off on your own tour, stop by the Hill House, located at 1048 Washington Street on the Emlen Physick Estate, from 9am2:30pm. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 29. Cape Island Theatre Bearcat Bootleggers or 1912, both by Ray Crew, are the dinner and a show offerings by Cape Island Theatre at the Old Grange Restaurant in Historic Cold Spring Village. Dinner at 7:15, show at 8pm, discounted rate for kids, even a “dessert only” option. For more information, call (609) 8845404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 30. Arcades A trip to the beachfront is simply not complete without a trip to the arcade. Treat your kids to all the flashing lights, beeps, bells, buzzers and videogames, or relive your own childhood memories. Cape May Arcade has two locations, one on Beach Avenue and Gurney, the other at Beach Avenue and Jackson Street. 31. Higbee Beach It used to be a bit of a scandalous place (nude bathers – gasp!). Not anymore... or, not usually. Follow New England Road until it ends, walk the path — aka Mosquito Alley — towards the beach and enjoy some splendid shore. Just enjoy it in a swimming (not birthday) suit. 32. Fisherman’s Wharf Tour Take a guided tour of Fisherman’s Wharf at the Lobster House Restaurant. Learn how

Activity Of The Week
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Sea Bathing.
L
ET’S face it — you came to Cape May for the ocean. Historians say that people have been swimming in the ocean since the 1700s, but it’s hard to believe that earlier humans resisted. Coming to the shore was the ultimate vacation in Victorian times, and taking a dip considered therapeutic. Ladies and gentlemen with any number of ailments would enter a bathing machine — a closed cart with a canvas top — on the beach, change into a 20 pound bathing costume, and roll into the surf, descending a few steps into the water and splashing around behind a curtain. Or, they could be dipped three times by an attendant. Scandalously, some people pretended to be sick just to go into the water. It became clear that people were in the ocean because it was fun. People waited their turn for bathing machines, and for the most popular dippers. While they waited, people needed entertainment and refreshment, and the promenade was born. Men and women
were not allowed in the water at the same time, and hotels used signal flags to indicate who was swimming. Perhaps that’s why there are promenades — to allow passersby to observe the swimmers? Today, you can swim in the ocean with much less preparation — just bring a beach tag, or fill a beach cart with all the
comforts of home. Swim where there are lifeguards — even lifeguards swim where there are lifeguards, because the ocean makes fools of us all. Make sure your bathing suit elastic still has some snap so that you don’t flash people as you roll in the surf. Leave your sunglasses and hat on the beach – you’re likely to lose them, and though you can tell yourself you’re making a donation to the “Needy Mermaids Fund,” you’re really just littering. The water’s different every day — sometimes it’s gentle, sometimes downright nasty — but it will always make you feel like a kid. Bring a boogie board to ride the waves, or play catch with a water ball— a great way to urge a reluctant young swimmer into the surf. Between dips, relax under an umbrella - rent one from Steger’s — theirs stay put even when it’s windy. Enjoy your packed lunch, grab a hot dog, or call Primo’s and have lunch delivered to the beach. Fly a kite, read a book, or take a nap, and then head back into the water. Go swimming! Next week: Get a Root Beer Float

Thursday, August 16, 2012 to get out and try. Keep moving! 1. Golf Cape May National Golf Club has “three of the best holes in New Jersey” according to The Jersey Golfer and is nestled in 50 acres of private bird sanctuary. (Visit Cape May National at www.cmngc.com or call 609-884-1563.) But, if it’s your wedge that needs some work, Cape May Par 3 will let you play 18 holes for just $15.95. No bag? No problem. Cape May Par 3 rents clubs for just $1. Visit them at www.capemaypar3.com or call (609) 889-2600. 2. Bike Ride It’s no secret: Cape May is a biking town. Have you even tried to navigate the streets of Cape May during rush hour? It’s enough to make you want to start jogging to your destination. But have no fear; there are bike rentals that beat braking (and braking again, then honking, then braking once more). Try Cape Island Bikes at 727 Beach Avenue or 135 Sunset Boulevard, (609) 884-8011. 3. Nature Trails Next to the lighthouse in the Cape May Point State Park there are several trails weaving through ponds, dunes, marsh and forest. There are different levels of difficulty marked by colors and most of the trails have wooden walkways. Even on the longest trails, breathtaking scenes in a tranquil setting will make you wish it was longer. Just make sure you wear comfortable shoes. 4. Yoga Yoga on the beach is a beautiful thing, and Judy Heany of Balance Pilates, located at 600 Park Boulevard in West Cape May, has a whole dance card of choices. There are classes on the Jackson Street beach on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8am. Over and above that, you can join a Balance class at the Montreal Inn and the Inn of Cape May (see the ad on this page for more details). Call Judy Heany at 609-884-3001. Karen Manette Bosna also offers beach yoga at Cape May
Point State Park on Saturday at 9:30am, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8am. Classes are $10. Karen also holds Yoga on beach in Cape May behind Convention Hall on Saturdays at 8am for $5. Call 827-8886 or check yogacapemay.com for more info. 5. Tennis The William J. Moore Tennis Club — named after the first black (as well as the oldest) tennis pro in America — rents rackets, balls and courts. It’s located next to the Physick Estate on beautiful tree-lined Washington Street, and there are always a variety of local characters up for a game, match, or set. BANDITO will just steal your heart. He is a friendly but timid dog who came into the shelter as a stray. He loves to go for walks and loves being pet. He is not what you would call a lapdog; he prefers to sit next to you. He can go to a home with dogs and cats but children are not recommended. Bandito’s adoption includes micro-chipping and all vaccinations brought up-to-date. The adoption fee is $95.
«
EDDY is a beautiful white Shepherd. This gentle and affectionate soul is approximately 3-years-old. This is the second time he has been at the shelter but it’s not his fault. Since he has not had a stable home life, it’s no wonder Eddy gets a little nervous around strangers. He would do well in a home with older children but should not be placed in a home with dogs and cats. The adoption fee is $95.
«
JAMISON is a black 2-year-old longhaired Sheppard. This beautiful and sweet girl is a bit nervous when you first meet her and needs a little patience to let her get to know you. Jamison knows some basic commands, and needs a calm, tolerant owner to learn more. She is very energetic and requires consistent exercise to keep her happy. She does not do well with other dogs or small children. The adoption fee is $95.

MITCH is waiting here at the shelter for someone to take him to a forever home. He is a little shy at first, but is very friendly with some time. He could be the perfect lap cat if you give him lots of love. If you think he sounds like a good match for you, stop by the shelter and give him a second chance. The adoption fee is $35.
«
PUMPKIN is a sweet little girl. She is a little over a year old but is quite a small girl. She love attention and loves to be pet. She is social but wants all of your attention, so she will not do well with other cats. If you are looking for a small sweet girl, look no further! Come into the shelter and pay her a visit. The adoption fee is $35.
Don’t leave your pet hanging when you go away... I can help!

CARLA is waiting here at the shelter for a forever home. She was brought in with her kittens, and they have since grown up and have all been adopted. She was a very good mommy, but is still getting used to being around people. With enough patience and love, she would be a great and friendly little girl. The adoption fee is $35,

Bird Droppings
I
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
’M WILLING to make a serious wager on this speculation: that you’ve undoubtedly wondered “why are there birds?” It’s a good question, right up there with the meaning of life, where to get the best burger, and why the chicken crossed the road. Insofar as you obviously have nothing important to do (why else would you be reading this column?), how about you and I examine this philosophical question so that you may attain greater (if somewhat dubious) enlightenment and I may meet my filing deadline with the punctilious editor of Exit Zero. First, to clearly define our subject: we’re discussing creatures cloaked in feathers that bring delight to our lives in more ways than you can shake a drumstick. So that’s one. Birds exist because they are good to eat. Not all birds, not at all times, but a fair portion of the world’s birds are protein packages worthy of peristalsis. A good example of a bird worth eating is the turkey. This was Benjamin
Franklin’s choice for our national bird. A fine example of a bird not worth eating is the Bald Eagle. This, apparently, was everyone else’s choice for the national bird. What might we deduce from this? Little, perhaps. But it is clear Old Ben put epicurean excellence ahead of emblematic eminence. On the other hand, I’ve never tried
Bald Eagle so I can’t really speak with any authority on its table worthiness. I can only say that the bird is... inspiring. That’s another reason birds were put on earth. To inspire us to emulation. Did Philadelphia’s football franchise choose a chrysanthemum, or an artichoke, or a liver f luke to be its emblematic mascot? They did not! They chose the eagle. A bird whose attributes inspire us to achieve great things. Okay. Except for last year. What kind of “great things?” Like moving a misshapen ball up and down a short grass field better than the guys with a fish or a bison on their helmets. Incidentally, did you know that modern football helmets were designed following extensive engineering studies conducted upon of the craniums of woodpeckers? That’s right. Scientists figured that a bird that bangs it’s head against trees for a living must have something going for it. Of course, they do start with smaller brains (the woodpeckers, I mean). A

Bird Droppings ? From Page 119 woodpecker striking its bill against hardwood does so with a measured force of 1,200 Gs. This compares to the black box in an aircraft which is designed to withstand a force of 1,000 Gs. How does this compare to the gridiron? On the field, just one helmet to helmet contact of a merit 100 G, will result in a trip to the bench with a concussion. Woodpeckers smack their heads against trees at a rate of about 15 times per second. So how does the woodpecker manage to keep its brain from being pureed? It combines a super-hard bill with a spongy cranium. I’m betting not many readers saw this coming, the link between birds and football. Even if they weren’t good to eat. Even if they weren’t inspiring. We’d still need birds to keep quarterbacks off the bench and in the game. And I didn’t even touch on the f locks of chicken wings that are devoured every game day. Next week we’ll explore the subject of diving birds and their ability to predict stock prices and how seabirds can be used to locate oil from leaking single hulled tankers. Birds. What would we do without them? If you need help identifying those
