Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Wendy Joy Redelico of Belle Mead, New Jersey. How long have you been coming to Cape May? We’ve been coming here since 1983. Who are you normally with? It used to be just husband and children — now we have our first grandchild, Grace Joy. Favorite thing about Cape May? That can’t really be defined. When I drive over the bridge, I feel that a new world awaits. Least favorite thing? Why be negative? Not a thing! Favorite restaurants? So many: George’s, Martini Beach, Blue Pig, Merion Inn — we miss George Mesterhazy. Favorite place to stay? Our place at The Tides! If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I would not change a thing. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? It adds to the unusual flavor of Cape May — it can be naughty and nice. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? Can’t think of a thing. I know everyone involved has the same love affair with Cape May that I do. What’s your T-shirt size? A onesie for the grandchild, please!

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Diane Stopyra. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Quotes Of The Week

Random Factoid

“I’m always running behind the times, just like this train.” — Joni Mitchell “Life is a train of moods like a string of beads, as we pass through them they prove to be many colored lenses.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson “I knew I was going to take the wrong train, so I left early.” — Yogi Berra

THE earliest form of trains were pulled by horses.; two or more horses would be attached to the front of a long car filled with people. These horsecars first ran on public streets in the 1820s, using the newly improved iron rail or “tramway.” Trains later came to be known as “iron horses.”

Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... The Blue Train WE FOUND this yummy-sounding recipe on ehow.com — and they caution that it should be served ice cold and drank more or less immediately. (And who the heck lets a cold cocktail sit around, is what we want to know?)

Ingredients: 6 ounces brandy 4 ounces fresh pineapple juice chilled Brut champagne to fill 2 orange slices for garnish Fill a cocktail shaker half-full with ice; shake brandy and pineapple juice, stain into champagne flutes. Top with chilled champagne and garnish with orange slice.

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

A Model Family THERE are a group of little witches in Cape May. They’re brewing in their cauldron not too far from the bottom of the ski slope. Left of the ice-skaters. South of the tug-of-war kids. These are some of the figurines that have been painstakingly placed throughout the Cape May Model Trains exhibit, where motorized steam engines and passenger cars pick up the electric currents from 30 separate tracks. “The scenery can be just as important as the trains themselves,” said owner Tim Delp when we stopped by for a visit last weekend. “Here, it’s half-imagination and half-reality.” Some of the trains — The Polar Express and Thomas the Tank Engine, for instance — exist only on television and, now, in this Elmira Street exhibit. Others are modeled after those real-life machines Tim and his family have traveled across North America in their motor-home to ride… like the Shay locomotives of West Virginia that were used in the logging industry from 1900 to 1960. Tim will give you the history, if you’re interested. Otherwise, you’re free to meander throughout, marveling at the amount of time it must have taken to place those itty bitty canoes in the lake, or to build that plaster mountain where the deer and goats are grazing. “I was keeping track of the hours at first,” Tim said, “but I lost track. It’s into the thousands. We don’t expect to make our money back on this.” So why do it, we wanted to know. Tim and wife Nancy are the owners of Cape Environmental Laboratory, which conducts basic water and environmental testing. Neither, we would think, has the time to be cleaning

toy tracks twice a day (which is how often they need cleaned, according to Tim). “It was a no-brainer,” he told us. “My sons… the way they’re proud of this place makes me proud of it. This gives them satisfaction, and that was the main goal.” Tim and Nancy’s boys — Stephen and Tyler — are 20-year-old conjoined twins, attached at the head. They are also autistic. “But they stay active,” Tom told us. “They don’t sit around and mope.” This is likely because they’re too busy winning handicapped-accessible hockey games (they sit in a sled and use shortened sticks to propel themselves forward), playing the violin (they’ve got perfect pitch), learning Spanish (they’re already fluent, but they’ll study the language further at Atlantic Cape Community College this fall), and, like most 20-something guys, crushing on Penelope Cruz. “Tyler and dad both like Penelope,” Stephen shared with us. The guys also love Bruce Springsteen, and they’ll attend their fifth Boss concert next month. We asked what happens if one of them isn’t in the mood to go… how do they decide what happens? “We get along pretty well,” Stephen told us. “I can’t remember a time that’s happened.” Since the exhibit opened almost three weeks ago, the twins how have an outlet for their greatest passion — trains. They work a morning shift and an afternoon shift everyday the exhibit is open, swapping train trivia with an already loyal following. “We hope people will come and enjoy themselves, and share their stories,” Tyler said. We hope so, too, but we couldn’t help but wonder what the reaction has been so far. “We’ve heard it all over the years,” Nancy

told us, sharing a story about a time when the twins were very young. The family was on the beach, and a nearby group tried to have them evicted from the sand. “They told us they paid good money to be here, and that they didn’t want to have to ‘deal’ with seeing this,” she said. “They got the mayor involved. In those situations, as much as you want to lash out, you just have to bite your tongue, even if it’s bleeding.” But in Cape May, the couple said, the support has been overwhelming. “$5,000 worth of ceramic houses were donated,” Tim says. “That entire train layout in the corner was donated, too. And it’s the kids from the Special Services School carpentry class who spent two years doing construction here before we opened. They built the handicap ramp. It’s been amazing.” Now, the Delps say, they want to give back. They plan on hosting birthday parties, class trips and private viewings. “Because of the autism,” Nancy said, “my sons couldn’t always handle crowds so well. There were times, at different train exhibits, that people held private viewings for us, and we want to be as approachable as we can about doing the same.” It’s important, she says, because everyone we encounter is bearing some type of cross. “I’m sorry, but no one gets through this life without some kind of bump in the road or hardship. But no matter what your disability or what condition you’re born under, I think if you’re loved — truly loved — that’s the strength in all of us.” Plus, the trains are just really cool. For more information, call (609) 4321690, or just stop by. You’ll be glad you did.

Members of Cape Island Runners participated in last month’s Mug Run. They ran from the Ugly Mug to the C-View to Sea Salt to Carney’s, to the Rusty Nail, then back to the Mug... stopping to enjoy refreshing brews along the way. Aleksey Moryakov

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13

For The Love Of Running WE’VE heard this place referred to as “exercise island,” and it’s obvious why. We went for a run along the promenade at 10pm the other night, and even at this late hour, we found ourselves weaving in and out of fellow joggers. Sometimes, it feels like you can’t throw a rock in this town without hitting a bicyclist/skateboarder/speed-walker/roller blader/that man who does some version of Tai-Chi along the beachfront every day. But up until recently — two-and-a-half months ago — there was a gaping exercise-related hole on Cape Island: there was no running club. Enter Christina Davis, the thirty-something ultra-marathoner from Ocean City who’s a huge fan of group running in Cape

May. Working as the monarch intern for the New Jersey Audubon in 2001, she had the opportunity to connect with the “wonderful birding community that thrives in Cape May.” Years later, at a birder party (who knew?) Chris met fellow naturalist Glen and fell in love. Last fall, they got married at the Pavilion Park Circle in Cape May Point — they pleaded with the CMP Environmental Commission for permission to do so — and moved full-time to this neck of the woods. But Chris seriously missed the running group she’d left behind in Ocean City, so she decided to launch Cape Island Runners, or CIR. “I wanted to create a place where people can share their passion for running,” she told us, “a place where they can be pushed to their potential, but still have a lot of fun doing it…” It’s this “pushed to their potential” bit that had us a little nervous when we showed up this month for one of CIR’s weekly Wednesday runs, which always begin at 6pm

from the entrance of Cape May Point State Park. But Chris and Glen put us at ease; they have no desire to leave anyone in the dust. “The thought of joining a group of strangers for a run can be a pretty intimidating prospect,” Chris said. “But the reality of joining a group is nothing but pure fun... Clubs can be a really great addition to a runner’s repertoire, and since ours is homegrown from the bottom up, it will be a very supportive environment.” And that it was. Your reporter, Chris, Glen, and one other runner (a small group this week due to job interviews and family obligations, we were told) did our three miles at such a pace we could talk the whole time (although we did speed up a bit when we came upon the electronic speedometer on Cape Avenue that’s meant to keep cars in check. Here, we clocked in at seven miles per

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 hour, thank-you-very-much.) And what did we talk about? Your reporter happened to be the only non-naturalist in the group, so she did get a bit of free nature lesson along the way. That’s inkberry growing along Seagrove Avenue, by the way. We also discussed Chris’ next marathon training plan (her first long-distance day is a cakewalk, she told us, at nine miles… HA!), the beauty of running through the Point and it’s cool ocean breezes, as well as some things on tap for the future of the group. First, there’s the full moon run slated for September 29; a bakery run where the goal is to jog from, you guessed it, bakery to bakery, indulging just a bit at each one; and a few “dash n’dines” where the group will meet at a restaurant after a jog to “chow down” on a prix fixe menu. “The possibilities are endless,” Chris said. “The general idea is that we come up with a fun theme and create a run that is completely stress-free — no timers, no pace to keep to, no winners.” After all, she told us, the goal is just as much social as it is athletic. Sometimes, she said, CIR members may opt to “get together and have a few beers… while talking about running.”

We like the sound of that. We also like the sound of Chirs’ other idea for Cape May — guided running tours. “It’s an already established idea,” she told us. “People run while learning about the history of an area. I participated in a great one last winter in Washington, DC. It got me thinking that Cape May would also be a perfect place — we have a ton of interesting history and a beautiful landscape.” So keep an eye out for that, Cape May. In the meantime, we plan to continue meeting CIR on Wednesday evenings, and we hope to see you there. Like Chris told us, it’s as easy as putting one foot in front of the other.

Under The (Blue) Moonlight

WE’VE drunk the beer at the Rusty Nail. We’ve had the pizza after a late night at Cabanas. We’ve eaten the ice cream on a hot summer day. But we’ve never given the name too much thought. We’re talking about Blue Moon. Come to find out, it’s not just a popular moniker for familiar Cape May foodstuffs. The old expression, “once in a blue moon,” refers to a real phenomenon. On August 31, it’s a blue moon that will be in the sky, and on August 29, Congress Hall will host its Blue Moon party to celebrate. Don’t feel silly if you have to ask… No,

the moon won’t actually be blue. We called Congress Hall’s Senior Programming Manager, Natalie Sudell, who explained that the name refers to the second full moon in a calendar month. (We did some Googling, and if a volcano happens to erupt on this night, sending plumes of ash to the edge of the Earth’s atmosphere, it is possible the moon could be blue in color, too.) If not, this is still a rare event. “It comes once every three years,” Natalie told us. “So the next one won’t be until 2015.” The party will be on the lawn, so the congo and veranda bars will be open, and the Adirondack chairs easily accessible. Sit back, enjoy the beauty of the not-blue blue moon reflecting off the ocean and the pool, and chow down. The food will be buffet style, and will include “traditional American fare,” like hamburgers, hotdogs, corn on the cob, pulled pork, and baked beans, with a s’more bar we plan on ravaging. But we’re most excited about the drum circle led by West Cape May local Marc Jacopec. Natalie told us Congress Hall is expecting about 75 to 100 people to turn up for this party, and that everyone is invited to participate in the drum circle. We can only

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 imagine what a tremendous, primal sound this crowd has the potential to create. For the kids, there’s all things iridescent — like glow in the dark face-paint and light-up hoola-hoops. “It’s a very relaxed, family evening,” Natalie said. “Parents can de-stress while kids enjoy the activities.” We think it’s a pretty great way to say goodbye to August and usher in September, which is, arguably, the best part of the summer on Cape Island. “It’s the last big hurrah,” Natalie told us. We’ll see you there, specialty cocktail in hand. Tickets are $20 for adults, $12 for kids four to twelve, and free for kids three and under. For more information, call 884-8421.

Singer Songwriter Spotlight MQ MURPHY is a familiar name in the music community in Cape May, so it’s fitting that he’ll be closing out the Singer Songwriter Showcase at Congress Hall’s Boiler Room on Wednesday, August 29. In case you haven’t been following along, the folks at Congress Hall have been providing a preview all summer of Singer Songwriter

Cape May, with an Open Mic hosted by Don Shaw at 8:30pm on Wednesday evenings, followed by a different featured singer songwriter each week. The host of local station WCFALP’s-101.5 “Six Degrees” radio show (Saturday mornings from 9am-noon), MQ first picked up a guitar “when I was 13 years old,” he told us recently, “and I played around with music throughout high school and college.” He was derailed for thirty-plus years by a career as a carpenter, until he “rolled back into it about four or five years ago.” This won’t be his first time at the Boiler Room, having played with Nashville’s Pete Mroz during his recent Singer Songwriter Showcase stint there. Those singersongwriter types, it seems, stick together. And while we were chatting with MQ, we noticed some of the same local entertainment names kept coming up: Barry Tischler, Deb Donohue, Ed Dobbs, and the talented fiddler Tom Naglee, who, MQ tells us, will be joining him on the 29th. “Tom

will be there to help lighten the load,” he said. Why — doesn’t he think he can handle it? “No, I can’t handle it!” MQ laughed. “It will be a stretch for me — it’s more than I’ve been called upon to do before.” Having recently caught MQ, among many others, at Barry’s Cape May Opry, we are certain this quietly talented artist is up to the task. (Google his “Driver Has No Money” — we loved it.) And we’re not alone. We spoke with Myra Vassian, who is the Entertainment Director at Congress Hall, about her thoughts on Murphy. “You can’t talk about singer songwriters in Cape May without the name MQ Murphy coming up again and again,” she said. “We are really pleased to be able to wrap up this series with MQ’s music. I’m sure it will be a finale to remember.” So is Murphy glad he “rolled back into music”? “Oh, I sure am,” he says. “And I’m so glad I rolled into something good.”

PARTING SHOT

We’re glad to hear that the structural fire at South Jersey Marina last Saturday night resulted in only minor smoke damage, that the Mid-Atlantic $500,000 is going on as scheduled and, most importantly, that no one was hurt. Speaking of the tournament, this issue comes out on the last fishing day, so if you haven’t already, be sure to check out the action at ma500.com... there you’ll find a weigh-in cam streaming live. Good luck to all of the contestants!

The Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever

M

EMO to Facebook: Shut up already. I am blocking all of my Facebook friends who spend their days (probably because they don’t have jobs) finding and posting one Anti-Romney/Ryan meme after another on an endless loop. Not only are most of them unsourced and untrue, but they make you look stupid and unsourced. Romney hates dogs! Ryan kills old people! We. Get. It. Getting all screechy and pontificatious (I just made that up) on the rest of us doesn’t help your cause. And I guarantee you this; there is not one single person of the billions on Facebook that have ever changed their political opinion because you posted a homoerotic, photoshopped picture of a shirtless Romney/Ryan. All you are doing is preaching to your choir, adding more voices to your echo chamber, and making people not like you. I’d hate to lose a real-life friend over something as ridiculous as a Facebook political debate where everyone is oh-so-

clever in their one-upmanship and seeing who can outsnark whom. Well, congratulations, you win, ugly zealot. Speaking of Facebook… Dumbest Thing I’ve Ever Done in My Life of the Week: I let it be known on the social networking site that I am deathly afraid of spiders. I now get no less than five posts a day referring me to either gruesome pictures of spiders eating dogs and/ or making fun of me for not liking these terrifying creatures that crawl on eight legs, see through 10 eyes and drool venom at the sight of a human foot. Anonymous Kiddy O’ke Note of the Week: “You were the highlight of our vacation.

What a great way to make the kids shine. Thank you so much!” And Terry O’ke’s heart grew three sizes that day. Apology of the Week (First Since My Return!): To the tender, sensitive-souled Frank Scott, who took umbrage at being named “ButtHole of the Week” last week and greeted me with a curt, two-word phrase that cannot be repeated in these pages at Terry O’ke last Thursday. Sorry, Frank… I calls ’em as I sees ’em. But if I may be serious for a moment (just a moment), when I started Terry O’ke in 2005, I did it because I needed a job, didn’t want to wait for one, so created one (I built that). I did it because, for the first time in my adult life, I wasn’t making my living on stage in a band or theater, and wanted a venue to perform while entertaining others. I did it to pay my bills and support my growing family, as we all strive to do. But I didn’t do it to find some of my best friends, which I did anyway, as Frank Scott, Rich Hemenway, Chris South, Skip Schwester and many others became important parts of my life. Sappy,

I know, but true. Also, the next time I name one of them “Butt Hole of the Week” I can say, “But remember that really nice thing I wrote in August?” Prodigal EZ photog Magic Norbertson (no way I’m even attempting to spell his name) is in town for a week and popped into the Boiler Room Thursday. Nothing really newsworthy to report, I just like making fun of his name. [Editor’s Note: It’s Maciek Nabrdalik.] Karaoke Safety Tip #1,246: Get your songs in early! None of this “I’m thinking about it” crap. You’re in or you’re out. Spending two-and-a-half hours flipping through the book, then handing me a slip 20 minutes before closing and being told you’re out of time is not license to get pissed at the host. Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part. You KNOW you want to sing “Love Shack” in your best Fred Schneider drawl, just put it in, already! Seven-Year-Old of the Week: My dear son Henry turned the big oh-seven last Wednesday, moving one step further away from baby-dom and towards becoming a young man. It’s tough to watch the last in line age out of all those kiddy things he used to love. But on the bright side, no more Dora the Explorer. Henry is the third beautiful, intelligent child Cathrine and I made (mostly me), continuing a long tradition of beautiful, intelligent O’Briens (starting with me). May he be blessed with long life, much happiness, and his mother’s hairline. We had ourselves quite the day, starting at the Game Stop in Rio Grande (which is always 20% too loud, but the staff are always very helpful and knowledgeable) for some Wii and DS games, then hit Frank’s for The Dark Knight Rises. This was followed by the Cape May arcade, a slice of pizza, and some cake. I wish I was seven. Speaking of Batman, The Dark Knight is a fantastic finale to an excellent series. Batman

Begins was an invigorating reboot of the legend, Dark Knight was Oscar-worthy, and Rises is somewhere in the middle. Batman purists (the only nerdier subculture than Ender fanatics) are up in arms over the treatment of the Bane character, to them I say... it’s a Batman movie. Some story conveniences kept it from reaching classic status, but it’s still probably the best movie I’ve seen this year. I take that back... The Avengers is the best thing that has ever existed. Puny God. Hey, local bar owners! You want to have my brand of wit and witticism in your establishment on a weekly basis? Look no further! I am currently ACTIVELY seeking off-season karaoke and/or acoustic work with my partner Will Knapp (no, not THAT kind of partner… don’t all go rushing off to ChikFil-A) of Acoustic Mayhem. Terry O’ke, Open Mic, acoustic jam, you name it, we do it! All at reasonable rates! So drop a line to terry@exitzero.us. (That didn’t come off to begg-y, did it?) And if you DON’T hire me I will assume it’s because of the first few paragraphs of my column this week, in which case I will start blogging incessantly about a conservative black list. And you don’t want that, do you? (FYI, Will is a dirty commie pinko, so we balance out nicely.) Lastly this week, I had lunch with the family at the Ugly Mug a few days back (is it too loud everywhere or am I just getting old?) and I was all ready and fired up and raring to go on and on about my $14 ham sandwich (a HAM SANDWICH!), but Jiminy Christmas… I don’t know if any ham sandwich is worth $14, but if so, this is the one. Took me three days to eat it. And I like eating stuff. The Mug is also home to the second best karaoke show on the island Wednesday nights. (Jab, jab… dodge… jab…) ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

“The Thirty-Nine Steps” Is A Smash-Hit

F

A new show brings Broadway talent — and a lot of laughs — to Cape May Stage... by Catherine Dugan

ROM the moment Artistic Director Roy Steinberg steps on stage as Hitchcock, the audience is invited to participate in the game that is The 39 Steps. Director Penny Bergman uses every trick in her extensive theatrical book to bring the tale — of a handsome bachelor caught up with spies — to life. Four actors play all the roles, and only Mark Campbell, as leading man Richard Hannay, plays just one person. Nicole Lowrance plays three female roles, and Ron Piretti and David Deblinger share the remaining hundred-odd roles, playing everything from cops, to villains, to dogs. There’s physical comedy, quick costume changes, and the sort of theater magic that invites howls of laughter. The show is a treat for theater lovers, film buffs, and anyone who enjoys a good time. Campbell commands your interest, folding his tall body — and his facial features — in ways you can’t believe. You root for him from the first moment. Lowrance disappears into her three roles, alternating between sexy and shy while remaining consistently comic. There’s no mystery why Hannay gets

“involved” with her. Deblinger and Piretti are brilliant, sometimes playing multiple characters within one conversation. They are a study in acting technique, if only you could stop laughing long enough to see how they do it. There are planes, trains and automobiles — even some sheep, a waterfall, and a mythical creature — as Hannay eludes police and pursues the truth. Rippling scarves suggest the wind, coordinated bumping suggests the train, and shadow puppets show the Loch Ness monster giving a piggy back ride. The actors are everywhere, turning the Robert Shackleton Playhouse into a playground, and the audience into props. My

kids, who know nothing of Hitchcock, and their grandmother, laughed their heads off. They wanted to include the stage hands, who are essential to the quick transitions, in the standing ovation. The 39 Steps by Patrick Barlow, from the novel by John Buchan and the film by Alfred Hitchcock, is licensed by ITV Global Entertainment Limited. The play’s original concept is by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon. Penny Bergman directs this fabulous team effort. Lighting design is by Matthew Miler, scenery by Robert J. Martin, costumes by Michele Sinacore and sound by Benjamin Loverin, who is also the production stage manager. B.H. Barry is the movement consultant, Blayze Teicher is assistant to Ms Bergman. Korogo is by Amanda Psareas, Taylor Cawely and Katie O’Neill, and Lisa Shames, Adele Marks and Kate Kampschroeder are the running crew. See The 39 Steps at Cape May Stage through September 7, Tuesdays through Sundays at 8pm. The play runs two hours, with intermission, and is appropriate for ages 10 and up. Put the paper down. of The Philadelphia Inquirer “LATER THAT DAY, I was reminded of one of life’s secrets: anytime you get a chance to have an 80-plus-year-old Southern chef cook for you, do it. Make that two 80-plus-year-old chefs with a centuryold chicken-frying pan, and it’s worth changing your plans.” “And in the summer when the shiny new restaurants largely left me wanting, these classics served me the taste of reliable comfort that I was craving.”

The Movie Column

I

By Dottie Knapp, President of the Cape May Film Festival

T’S AN American classic, and it’s celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf first appeared on Broadway in October 1962. It returns to Broadway again on the same day it opened, and it’s reportedly going to be one of the hottest tickets in town. So before you go up to see it on stage, come to the Chalfonte Hotel on Sunday, September 2, at 8:00pm for a screening of the Oscar-winning film version starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. George and Martha (Burton and Taylor) are the older couple, ready to do battle with every verbal interchange. Add a little alcohol — okay, maybe a lot of alcohol — to the mix, and you’ve got even more explosive arguments. George is a professor at a university where Martha’s father is president (talk about adding fuel to the fire). After a faculty social, Martha asks young professor Nick (played by George Segal) and his mousy wife Honey (played by Sandra Dennis) over for a nightcap. And so the story is set for fireworks from the older couple with the younger couple hopelessly trapped

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in the brilliant Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf in the middle. The film (released in 1966) won five Oscars, two for Taylor (Best Actress) and Dennis (Best Supporting Actress) as well as for cinematography, set direction, and costume design. That was all back when there was a separate category for black and white films. The film was nominated for 13 Oscars overall. Burton and Segal were eachnominated for Oscars for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor respectively. The screening is free to Cape May Film

Society members (and membership is free — see how we try to keep the math simple?). It’s also free to guests of the Chalfonte Hotel. Of course, we’ll be happy to take a contribution, and higher donations will get you a free DVD of this year’s fantastic summer film camp movies. So instead of catching this movie when it’s on TV, why not watch it with a group of people who love classic movies as much as you do. Of course, what screening of this film would be complete without a few cocktails, so visit the King Edward Bar before you join us! No reservations are needed. For more information, call 609-326-FEST (3778) or email capemayfilm@hotmail. com. Plus, we have one free VIP pass to the 2012 Cape May Film Festival (October 19-21, Chalfonte Hotel) for the first person who can email capemayfilm@hotmail.com and tell us who beat Burton in 1967 to take the Oscar for Best Actor. That same person can get two free passes for the name of the person who won Best Supporting Actor that same year. Good luck!

The Old Fogey

A

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

H, HOW I miss the train. I remember when the line ran all the way from New York City to Cape May, to a grand little station on the seafront that was hand carved from teak, ivory and had 300 magnificent stained glass windows done in return for food and board by an itinerant Scotch artist by the name of Rennie Mackintosh. From there the main line took a little detour undersea to Philly, while a score of delightful local lines spread out through our fine city, on a narrower gauge that allowed miniature trains to service every street and home in Cape May. They were electrically powered, which was very much the New Thing, in the manner of those amusing dodgem cars at fairgrounds, from an overhead cable that a mast touched. We had no stops as such: you merely raised a hand and a train would slow enough for you to step over the edge of the two-foot-high open cars. The ride was not generously proportioned, and we did receive complaints from some more corpulent visitors that they could not comfortably

fit their large rear ends in, and once they did, they were often wedged in, and had to ride round and round for hours until someone noticed their distress and fetched a crowbar and some butter. At its peak, the Cape May Miniature Railroad had some 300 engines running 24 hours a day over an impressive 1,000 miles of tracks within the city boundaries (we also had a branch line that went to Wildwood, and a special armored train for those brave souls who wanted to visit that benighted city. The engine had a cow-catcher on front

to deflect curious Wildwooders who would crowd the track to stare open-mouthed at the modern marvel). At night, the sparks from the electrical connections would light up the sky, and the smell of burned ozone attracted the weak of lung, who believed it to be a cure for asthmatic ailments. The end came one day when the 9.10am Express from The Point was running down Stimpson Lane and derailed on an illegal electrical connection the scallywags who lived there had added to steal power for their shacks’ illicit stills. The 9:12am to Congress Hall ran right into the back of the Express, and the 9:13am heading the opposite way came off when the driver tried to brake too hard. Well, all in all, 187 trains were soon piled up, and close to 1,000 people were nursing minor injuries and having their belongings thieved by the Stimpson Lane beggars. We eventually restored the service, but the shine had worn off, and it was never the same again, finally being phased out in favor of the Cape May Hydrogen Dirigible Company.

EACH week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. This week’s recipient is Sophia Brown, four, and April Dinardo, age, who is a bartender at the Rio Station. They live in Wildwood Crest. What are you up to today? We just finished breakfast at the Blue Pig Tavern to celebrate my 30th birthday. Do you have any plans for later? I am heading for a massage at Congress Hall’s Sea Spa later today. Then, Sophia and I will get some ice cream and play a little mini golf. When is the last time you got some flowers? Sophia received flowers a few weeks ago, and for no specific reason! The Answer Lady

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I recently visited your fair city, quite by accident, since we were headed for Wildwood, and, since he refuses to ask for directions, ever, we ended up in Cape May. We loved it, and were thrilled to have discovered it, even if it was by accident. Of course, when we parked the car, we couldn’t figure out how to work the parking meter kiosk thing, and he wouldn’t ask anyone about that either. We’ve been married for 30 years so I should be used to his bull-headedness by now anyway, and I don’t have one of those smart phones — just a dumb phone and a dumb husband. Why won’t men ask for directions? – Directionless Dear Directionless Approximately once a year the Answer Lady receives an inquiry from a reader to

Wise answers to perplexing questions

which she can reply, “You might as well ask why birds fly, why the sky is blue, how many grains of sand there are on the world’s beaches, as to ask such a question as yours.” Sometimes, ours is not to question why, ours is to take the stupid bull by the stupid horns and do it ourselves. If you’re lost and he stops at a light, roll down the window and shout to a passerby. And invest in a GPS for your husband — you’re on your own with the parking meter snafu, however.

Dear Answer Lady My girlfriend and I just got home from a great vacation in Cape May, except for one thing. Our B&B provided bikes, but there were baskets attached — large ones. These seem perfectly appropriate for women, but I found them to be a bit effeminate. I wanted to remove mine, but she said I shouldn’t, but then I wouldn’t let her photograph me on my bike and she got mad and we ended up having huge fight. I know the pictures would have ended up on Facebook for all of our friends and family to see, and I didn’t want to look like a girlyman. Is that so wrong? — Manly Man Dear Manly Oy — the Answer Lady has a headache all of a sudden. No basket affixed to a bicycle will make a man ‘girly.’ (Unless, of course, the basket is covered with glitter and overflowing with flowers, but you give no indication of that here.) Life is short, vacations are precious and few, and photographs are priceless. So next time, you WILL pose with your bicycle basket and smile pretty.

What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? What’s your name and where are you from? I am Karen Knettel, and I am from Connecticut. What are you doing here? I am here renting a condo with my parents for six days. So far, we’ve toured the city and had dinner at Harpoon Henry’s. What were you doing when we interrupted you? Just a little shopping on the Washington Street Mall with my mom and dad. The theme for this week’s issue of Exit Zero is “train.” How do you feel about train travel? I like them, although I haven’t been in one for a long time. I work in finance, and I did used to ride the train in New York City. That was... interesting! Chatting it up with the men and women who dock In Cool Cape May... by Caroline Wenzel

OM and Carey Mitchell have been sailors their entire lives, and together they race in some of the most competitive regattas. They love hitting the open water on their 38-foot Island Packet 35 with their family, and dog, Genny. Where are you from and what brings you here? [Tom] We are from Baltimore and we are here with our son, his significant other, our friend, and Genny. We have been here for a week with one of the sailing clubs we are a part of, and we have another week to go. We live on our boat six to eight weeks out of the year; we’ve been doing that ever since we got married, six years ago. Oh god, I mean seven! Don’t kill me, Carey! But we are heading to Lewes, DE tomorrow... that is, if I make it after that slip up. So what is it that drew you to this boat? We both had boats before we got married, so we just knew we wanted one. And, once, while sailing on our way back to Baltimore from New York, we realized we needed something bigger. And that is when we decided on Cariad.

Tom and Carey Mitchell, aboard Cariad What does that name mean? Well, it means “darling” in Welsh. We think the language is beautiful, and that word especially. You mentioned you were members of sailing clubs. Which ones exactly? Right now, we are out with Maryland’s Glenmar Sailing Association, and we travel also with Gibson Island Yacht Squadron. We recently did the Governors Cup, but we don’t race with this boat.

Any fond stories you’d like to share? Once, we found ourselves in Fairly Creek on the Chesapeake Bay. Several boats were tied up together. But by themselves was a much older gentlemen and his similarly aged lady friend. Out of nowhere, a terrific thunder storm came through. We worried about them, so we called them to ask if everything was okay over there. The gentleman answered, “No, we are in a terrible fix here. We are out of tonic.”

Here is a handy and comprehensive list of ideas to get you started. 1. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive, educational and handson activities, visitors can make a connection with the past by experiencing it. The many authentically restored homes, amid idyllic shaded areas, make it hard to not feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier

when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. There is a themed event every weekend — Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 898-2300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. 2. The Osprey is conveniently located at the Miss Chris Marina. Offered at 10am, 1:30 and 6pm daily, with a 1-hour 4pm harbor cruise every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping

at the outlets. No matter what you choose once you’re there, you’ll enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins and whales on your way. They even have a bar onboard! For more information or to book a reservation, call 800-64FERRY or visit www.capemaylewesferry.com. 4. Visitors to the exhibit will be treated to rare photographs, video and a multitude of artifacts showcasing the years immediately before and after the city’s Urban Renewal movement. The exhibit will be open daily through November 4 and admission is free. Gallery hours vary. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit capemaymac.org. 5. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off

Page 92 Cape May, but it’s still a big thrill to see these beautiful creatures. Cape May Whale & Dolphin Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. And, as the name implies, you might even see a whale. Tours take off from Wilson Avenue. If the ship is docked you can see it on your left as you cross the small bridge before the Lobster House on your way out of town. For directions or more information, call (609) 8980055 or visit them on the web at www.capemaywhalewatch.com. 6. Historic Haunts House Tour  Get into the Victorian spirit on a guided tour of the historic (and some say haunted) Physick Estate, and learn about the Victorians’ fascination with spiritualism, as well as today’s modern ‘“ghost-hunting” methods. Purchase tickets at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth.

Admission is $7 and includes a booklet that describes the plants found in numbered areas throughout the property. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 11. Visit them between 10am and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays and see how alpaca fiber is spun into yarn, or shop at their store which carries many alpaca-related items (forget wool: go with an alpaca sweater this winter!) And don’t forget to greet the grazing alpacas – they make it all possible. Call (609) 884-0563 or visit www.bayspringsalpacas.comfor more information. 12. A Shoebie’s Life

A new advice column on vacationing in Cape May... by Irving Spiff, Jr

S

HOEBIES love to bicycle around Cape May. It’s true. It’s what we do and if they’re being honest, it’s what a lot of locals do, too. It’s much easier to get around town that way, especially during the height of the season when us shoebies are clogging the streets with our cars and playing the Find a Damn Parking Spot game. Even the publisher of this rag rides his bike to work, probably as often as he drives. The problem with so many bikes on the road is that a good three-quarters of them don’t know the laws about riding a bike in Cape May. There are no local rules and regulations about bicycling. Shocking, right? The city defers to the state of New Jersey on this one and there are some very specific state laws that you need to know about. First, any person under 17 years old is required to wear a helmet, no exception. If you’re over 21 and drunk, a helmet might be a good idea too. So would bail money, since you can be charged with a DUI on a bicycle in New Jersey. That’s right, no drinking

and riding. You’re not doing anyone a favor by riding a bike home drunk from the bar instead of driving. More than a few accidents have been caused by bicyclists weaving into the road. In Pennsylvania and other surrounding states, bicycles are allowed to travel with traffic and be in the middle of the lane. New Jersey law is different and bicyclists are required to ride as close to the right side of

the road as possible, except when making a turn. They’re also required to have a horn or bell that can be heard at least 100 feet away and a headlight that can be seen 500 feet away in the dark if you ride at night. The bicycling laws in this state might seem excessive, but in a small town like Cape May with narrow streets, they save lives. Every year, there are a couple accidents between automobiles and bicycles. A particularly dangerous spot is where Sunset Boulevard merges on to West Perry Street. It’s a tight squeeze as it is and if you’re not as far right as you can possibly be, you could get seriously hurt or killed. By the way, Cape May is not Segwayfriendly for anyone out there who was wondering. They’re not allowed on the streets, promenade, mall or anywhere else except designated bicycle paths and on private property. The city has yet to rule on those floating chairs from the movie Wall-E. Bottom line... be careful out there, my fellow Shoebies (and locals).

Activity Of The Week

O

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Have a root beer float.

N A steamy summer Cape May day, when the beach has left you hot and thirsty, refresh yourself with a root beer float. You may have forgotten just how perfect a root beer float can be. They’re a summer classic, and — as you tell your teenagers when they balk at the literature assigned for summer reading — things become classics because they’re good. Root beer is an acquired taste. Europeans find it too medicinal, although they have a history of beers crafted from roots, and root beer was originally marketed as a tonic to “purify the blood.”American root beer recipes vary, but usually include birch, sarsaparilla, licorice, coriander and wintergreen. Sassafras, a traditional ingredient, was declared carcinogenic in 1960. Root beer was homemade before Charles Hires sold his to the public at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition, and bottled root beer became available in 1893. Credit for the first root beer float is in dispute — Philip Mohr of Elizabeth, New Jersey; Robert

Green of Philadelphia; and Frank J. Wisner of Cripple Creek, Colorado, are contenders. Wisner, who called it a “black cow,” was inspired by a full moon over Cow Mountain, which reminded him of a floating scoop of ice cream. Central Americans favor Wisner—you

order “Vaca Negra” in Costa Rica. Down under, they order a “spider,” and in Puerto Rico, a “blackout.” Europeans like floats with other flavors — orange and cola are popular in the UK, tart lemon soda in Italy. In America, people order combinations, but not without risk — chunky ice creams like mint chocolate chip or hazelnut crunch get caught in the straw. There’s even an alcoholic version — vanilla ice cream in Guinness Stout, with or without espresso. You can get a root beer float at most of Cape May’s ice cream parlors, like Dry Dock, Cocomoe’s or Dellas 5&10. Try Stewart’s, the root beer experts — even their diet version is tasty. Sit at the counter, listen to the music, and pretend you’re a teenager on a date — get two straws. Or, pick up a pint from Ben & Jerry’s or Bliss and make it at home — a can of root beer is good for two floats. Pour a few ounces into a tall cup, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream, top off with root beer and serve with a spoon and a straw. You’ll know why it’s a summertime classic. Next week: Visit the Nature Center

Thursday, August 23, 2012 to get out and try. Keep moving! 1. Golf Cape May National Golf Club has “three of the best holes in New Jersey” according to The Jersey Golfer and is nestled in 50 acres of private bird sanctuary. (Visit Cape May National at www.cmngc.com or call 609-884-1563.) But, if it’s your wedge that needs some work, Cape May Par 3 will let you play 18 holes for just $15.95. No bag? No problem. Cape May Par 3 rents clubs for just $1. Visit them at www.capemaypar3.com or call (609) 889-2600. 2. Bike Ride It’s no secret: Cape May is a biking town. Have you even tried to navigate the streets of Cape May during rush hour? It’s enough to make you want to start jogging to your destination. But have no fear; there are bike rentals that beat braking (and braking again, then honking, then braking once more). Try Cape Island Bikes at 727 Beach Avenue or 135 Sunset Boulevard, (609) 884-8011. 3. Nature Trails Next to the lighthouse in the Cape May Point State Park there are several trails weaving through ponds, dunes, marsh and forest. There are different levels of difficulty marked by colors and most of the trails have wooden walkways. Even on the longest trails, breathtaking scenes in a tranquil setting will make you wish it was longer. Just make sure you wear comfortable shoes. 4. Yoga Yoga on the beach is a beautiful thing, and Judy Heany of Balance Pilates, located at 600 Park Boulevard in West Cape May, has a whole dance card of choices. There are classes on the Jackson Street beach on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8am. Over and above that, you can join a Balance class at the Montreal Inn and the Inn of Cape May (see the ad on this page for more details). Call Judy Heany at 609-884-3001. Karen Manette Bosna also offers beach yoga at Cape May

Point State Park on Saturday at 9:30am, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8am. Classes are $10. Karen also holds Yoga on beach in Cape May behind Convention Hall on Saturdays at 8am for $5. Call 827-8886 or check yogacapemay.com for more info. 5. Tennis The William J. Moore Tennis Club — named after the first black (as well as the oldest) tennis pro in America — rents rackets, balls and courts. It’s located next to the Physick Estate on beautiful tree-lined Washington Street, and there are always a variety of local characters up for a game, match, or set. The courts are open to the public daily for just $10 per hour and a half. For more information call (609) 884-8986. 6. Horseback Riding At Hidden Valley Ranch, you can take lessons in the pastimes of heroes and kings under the watchful gaze of Nancy Hall and her daughter Angi Dickenson, who have nearly 70 years of combined equine experience. Saddle up. Call Hidden Valley Ranch at (609) 884-8205 for more information, or check them out on facebook. 7. Fishing Cape May is one of the busiest commercial fishing ports in the US. The sport fishing is big business, too... AND a whole lot of fun. South Jersey Marina boast the Murderer’s Row, a top-notch selection of boats with crews who know these waters better than anyone. Try the experienced team of Stalker Sport Fishing: (609) 231-9611, or the Miss Chris fleet: (609) 884-3939. For all your bait and tackle needs, stop by Jim’s Bait and Tackle on Route 109 by the harbor: (609) 884-3900. 8. Tidal Marsh Tour by Kayak Explore Cape May County’s most beautiful salt marsh via sit-on-top kayaks. It’s a great way to see nesting ospreys, herons, egrets and assorted crabs. There are two excellent options to choose from. Aqua Trails at 1600 Delaware Avenue in the Nature Cen-

ROCKY would really like to meet you. He’s an energetic older gentleman who just loves to play. He does not get along with other animals at all, so he’ll have to be an only pet, but he gets along great with kids (he used to live with a three-year-old). Rocky loves loving — giving and receiving — so if you need a friend, this could be a wonderful opportunity... for both of you. The adoption fee is only $35.

«

MR PICKLES is a three-year-old Maltese/Poodle mix with tan and white curly hair. He’s low-energy, and desperate for someone with whom he can build trust. Mr. Pickles wants to be social but tends to be a little anxious and just a tad nippy if he feels unsure with a person. But he likes being pet and will climb on your lap if he’s allowed! The adoption fee is $95 and includes microchipping.

«

TUCKER is a five-year-old Shih Tzu/ Brussels Griffon whose owner could no longer take care of him. He’s a good boy who tends to be shy around strangers but once he warms up to you he likes being held and groomed. Tucker is playful, and he can go to a home with dogs and/or cats but not children. All he really needs is to know he is loved. Tucker’s adoption fee is $35, and includes micro-chipping.

BETTY is waiting patiently for a family. She’s a sweet little girl who loves attention! Sometimes, she needs her own space, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t love you. If you think you could spare the love for a girl down on her luck, stop by the shelter and give Betty a second chance! The adoption fee is $35.

«

HUFFY and SCHWINN were found abandoned in a carrier on a bike path between the ACCC campus and the recreation center. Both of these cats were very scared when they arrived at the shelter. Huffy is becoming more confident, but Schwinn needs some TLC. Both are delightful. The adoption fee is $35 for both.

ABBY is a sweet, one-year-old female who had a huge abscess on her neck when she got picked up by Animal Control, but she’s healed nicely. Abby was someone’s pet — she came in with a green collar — but unfortunately, she’s still here. She purrs and purrs and loves to be pet, but doesn’t want to share your affections with another cat!

A Dramatic Fall At Cape May Stage ADVERTISING FEATURE

AVE you seen The 39 Steps yet? There are only two weeks left to see the show the Newark Star-Ledger called “sultry and silly”. The story begins when an average man with a boring life meets a woman with a thick accent claiming to be a spy. After he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called The 39 Steps is hot on the man’s trail, resulting in a death-defying finale. A riotous blend of brilliant performances and wildly inventive stagecraft, The 39 Steps amounts to an unforgettable evening of nonstop laughs and Hitchcock’s special brand of romance, intrigue, and espionage. The final perfomance is September 7. We are beyond excited to welcome back two of our favorite performers: husband-and-wife team Michael Tucker and

Husband and wife team Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker, above, of LA Law fame star in Mike’s Shorts, on August 27. Below, Mark Campbell comforts Nicole Lowrance in The 39 Steps. Jill Eikenberry. Well-known as the stars for eight seasons on NBC’s LA Law, the couple returns to Cape May Stage in Mike’s Shorts, a series of tales that weave the couple’s love of food with their love for each other. Join them on their hilarious and oftentimes touching journey at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse on August 27 at 8pm. Tucker and Eikenberry — affectionately known as Tuckerberry — split their time between New York City and a house nestled among the sleepy olive trees of Umbria, Italy. This Emmy award-winning duo will read short stories and perform a world premiere one-act play. These tales, written by Tucker, weave life lessons with gastronomic delights, taking the audience on travels through New

York and Italy, while stopping for frequent refreshments along the way. Foodies and travelers delight in this comedic and heartfelt presentation about life, traveling, and the sins committed against food. Soon, Cape May Stage shifts gears from a summer of comedies to an autumn of drama. Opening September 12, Time Stands Still tells the story of a photojournalist and a foreign correspondent trying to find happiness in a world gone awry. Theirs is a partnership based on telling the toughest of stories, but when their own narrative takes an unexpected turn, the couple confronts the prospect of a more conventional life. Bird Droppings

Y

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

OU are just about guaranteed to see a hummingbird. WHAT (you are thinking)? ME (you ponder)? See a hummingbird. Yes you, you skeptical soul. Even you, a mere mortal, can see one of nature’s most magical creatures. “HOW?,” you interrupt (unnecessarily I might add). I was getting to that. You can see a hummingbird by going on a bird walk led by the Cape May Bird Observatory. Is there a catch? Yes. First, you need a pure heart. Hummingbirds are invisible to people who are less than trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, brave, clean and... What?” Oh, yes, there’s a fallback plan. Like I said, you can out with people who are skilled at pointing hummingbirds out to people who are not hummingbird adept. You will find that most of these skilled, hummingbird pointerouters are associated with the Cape May Bird Observatory. They are called CMBO

Associate Naturalists. People who are so trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous kind, obedient, cheerful, brave, clean (not to mention ace birders) that hummingbirds line up and take numbers to be pointed out by the likes of them. In fact, so confident am I that a hummingbird will appear, in your presence in their presence, that I am offer-

ing a Hummingbird-back Guarantee on a Monday morning field trip to the South Cape May Meadows between now and September 3, 2012. “Pretty good deal,” you are thinking. “If I don’t see a hummingbird, then...” No. I didn’t say see. I said, “appear in your presence.” There is no guarantee that you will actually see one of these feathered darts. Most sightings of hummingbirds on this walk are of birds migrating through. About twenty feet up. Zipping by like a supersonic spit ball. Just about the time an Associate Naturalist realizes that a hummingbird is speeding by, it is already past tense. Even if said Associate Naturalist does the bird before it reaches the group, the length of time it takes to enunciate “hummingbird” almost insures that the bird will be gone before members of the group can get their heads up. Hum. Ing. Bird. Three syllables. About two syllables too long for such a small, fast

Page 122 Bird Droppings ? From Page 119 f lying bird. If Rudy-throated Hummingbird was, say, named “Rube” or “Humm” people would have a fighting chance. If hummingbirds called as they migrate (like Short-billed Dowitcher and Yellow Warblers, and Bobolinks, and Cedar Waxwings and any number of other birds) everyone would be able to switch to “hummingbird alert” status before the bird arrived. Did I say Bobolink? Yes, of course. Bobolinks are a common migrant in late August. About as common as hummingbirds. And Short-billed Dowitchers. Uh huh. Common migrant in August (along with many other shorebird species). Cape May is a very species rich place. Hummingbirds are just the tip of the iceberg. So to summarize, if you go on a birding walk this time of year you are almost guaranteed to be in the presence of a hummingbird. If you have a pure heart, you’ll see it too. Less than pure hearted people? Well, you can cheat and buy a hummingbird

Thursday, August 23, 2012 feeder and bait the magical little things in with a little sugar water (4 parts water mixed with 1 part sugar). Or you can find a patch of Spotted Touch-me-nots and wait five or ten minutes. Hummingbirds love touch-me-not. You say you don’t know what Spotted Touch-me-not looks like? The Associate Naturalists can help with that, too. Looks like you need help with hummingbirds, hummingbird feeders and how to equip them, and probably Spotted Touch-me-not. Looks like you need to head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory, THE place for all your nature needs. You can ask the staff for help, you can pick up a free birding map, checklist and, should you decide you need the help of some Associate Naturalists, a schedule of our daily walks. You can also talk to our staff about the best optics for birding, check out field guides, and anything else you might need — or don’t know you need yet! The CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), and is open from 9:30am to 4:30pm every day EXCEPT TUESDAYS. Our staff are always willing to help with any questions. While you are there, scan the bookshelves for some bargains in the used and vintage books

section (maybe even a slightly used field guide), look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory, or just browse around. Take a look at the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen out in the field, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars. If it’s nice, sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us online www. BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! You can join Pete for his Monday morning walk at the South Cape May Meadows. Just meet by 7:30am in The Nature Conservancy parking lot on Sunset. Loaner binoculars are available at no cost. Seymore Thanu is actually Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.
