Subscriber Of The Week
Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Janet McGraw-Fisher of Peekskill, New York. How long have you been coming to Cape May? I grew up here... graduated from Lower Township High School in 1986, and havebeen returning to visit ever since. Who are you normally with? My husband Kevin, dog Dixie and friends! Favorite thing about Cape May? I love the beaches and that ocean. Least favorite thing? Territorial people on the beach; there’s enough sand for all. Favorite restaurants? The Red Store, the Ebbitt Room porch, and the Rusty Nail bar for breakfast. Favorite place to stay? With the dog? My dad’s place. Without? Anywhere on Jackson. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? The slope of the beaches from around Steger’s down toward Broadway. Before that big ridge of sand it was much nicer, and still is down toward the Philadelphia Street beach. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? The design of the color issues, and feeling connected to a town I love when I’m not there. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I could use one more issue in the winter. What’s your T-shirt size? XXL, please!
Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Diane Stopyra. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Quotes Of The Week
Random Factoid
“Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I have hope for the future of the human race.” — HG Wells “If you worried about falling of the bike, you’d never get on.” — Lance Armstrong “Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling.” — James E. Starrs
EVEN though 87 million Americans ride bicycles — there are more cyclists than skiers, golfers, and tennis players combined — they forego the car on only one percent of all trips taken. If that number were to increase to just two percent, the gasoline savings would be 262 million gallons per year.
Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... Cherry Smash THE website bicycling.com featured this cocktail in their “Summer Cocktails for Cyclists” segment. And since it’s still summer for three more weeks (why do people always forget that?), we think it’s appropriate. As a nice bonus, cherries reduce inflammation so this cocktail is a good way to ease sore muscles after a long bike through Cape May... doctor’s orders.
Ingredients: 5 pitted fresh cherries ½ oz fresh lemon juice 1 oz maraschino liqueur 1 ½ oz gin of your choice Muddle four cherries in a mixing glass with the lemon juice and liqueur. Add gin and ice, shake well, and strain into a serving glass. Use the remaining cherry as a garnish!

Talk Of The Town
Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
Pollution In Paradise
RECENTLY, we took a ride on the little speeder train that’s been taking tourists, for just $10 a person, on a scenic trip from the train station to the West Cape May bridge and back. We highly recommend it, as it provided lovely views of Cape Island Creek. We just wish there’d been a little less trash along the way. Even in Cape May, we realized — even in our pristine marshlands — there’s litter. Bottle caps, deflated balloons, shampoo containers… plastic, plastic, plastic. We couldn’t help but cringe thinking about the fish who must be puzzled by this strange and invasive new species. Which is just one of the reasons why we’re so grateful for Clean Ocean Action. Since 1984, the non-profit has been working to identify sources of pollution and “mount an attack” on each source through the use of research, public education, and citizen action (like the annual beach sweep done in conjunction with the Nature Center). Or, according to COA’s south Jersey delegate and Board of Trustees member, Jeff Martin, “the goal is to put themselves out of business.” It’s probably easy, one would think, for a person like Jeff Martin to take up the cause. Owner of Aqua Trails kayaking business and an avid stand-up paddle boarder, he spends a lot of time in the ocean. It’s his office and his playground. One might think he’s got more at stake than the rest of us if things like contaminated sediments disposal, wastewater discharges, and oil and gas drilling negatively affect our ocean. But the truth is, Jeff says, the entire tourism industry in south Jersey “relies on a healthy, sustainable
ocean.” And you’re affected even if you don’t care about hanging ten in clean water. When we got home from our trip on the speeder train, we looked it up: fish off the coast consume 12,000 tons of plastic per year. Which means there’s a good chance, we would think, if we eat seafood, that we’re consuming harmful plastic chemicals — like evil sperm-count lowering bisphenol A (BPA) — too. “The plastic situation is pretty grim,” Jeff told us. And even if you’re not one of the jerks leaving your trash behind on the beach, you could be an unassuming culprit in the fight to keep our oceans clean. Jeff explained Nitrogen Eutrophication to us. (He happens to be a marine biology teacher at Lower Township High School.) When we manicure our lawns with pesticides, the toxins make their way into the ocean, where an excess of nitrogen steals oxygen from, say, the eel grass that depends on it. “Eel grass is an important part of backbay ecology,” Jeff said… plus, bay scallops need it for part of their life cycle. Thus, the pollution caused by our desire to “keep up with the Jones’, means our scallop supply is seriously depleted... and so are our dinner options. Clean Ocean Action’s work is part of the reason New Jersey passed more stringent fertilizer legislation this past year. Now, the non-profit is advocating for a designated “Clean Ocean Zone” between Cape May and Montauk that would “lockout harmful, polluting, industrial activities off our coast and lock in permanent protection.” Protection that the 20 species of whales and dolphins, four species of seals, five species of sea turtles, and hundreds of fish and bird species along our coast greatly need. Not to mention humans. In 1984, this
stretch was the ocean dumping capital of the world. There were eight dumping sites in the New York/NJ Bight, or the area where the two states form a wedge, and some of these were designated for “sewage sludge,” creating a huge public health concern. “There’s a lot of pressure to start dumping in the ocean again,” Jeff explained. “You have to be ever vigilant.” As an awareness-raising endeavor for this federal initiative, two COA members took part in Tour For the Shore, a mission to travel by outrigger canoe and bicycle from Cape May to Montauk, New York. The journey took from August 10 to 24. But you don’t have to make a two-week, 850-mile trek in order to pledge your support. For more information, or to find out how you can help, check out cleanoceanaction.org and cleanoceanzone.org. And pick up a plastic bottle or two the next time you see them on the beach.
New Owners On The Block
BARBARA Tillman was born in Ethiopia because her parents were missionaries following “a call from the Lord” with the Sudan Interior Mission. When they eventually moved Barbara back to the US, she was twelve… and in a state of severe culture shock. “It was 1969,” she told us, “the heart of desegregation. I couldn’t wrap my head around this prejudice thing. All of my friends up until that point had been black-skinned. I wouldn’t say shunned, but I was strongly criticized for being so freely friendly to the African American students in my public school. I gravitated toward them, because

Oh, what the heck. We’re feeling nostalgic for the tourists already so we figure, why not throw in one more beach picture? Here, Hank, Bella, and Kaye show our photographer how to boogie board like pros. Aleksey Moryakov
Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 that’s what came naturally to me. I was colorblind. I wanted so badly to go back to Ethiopia.” But then Barbara met IC, who attended the same church youth group in Towson, Maryland. “Already, at the age of twelve, he was so kind and gentle,” she said, “and he became one of my very best friends at a time when I was having trouble trusting.” Nearly thirty-five years ago, at the ages of 20 and 21, Barbara and IC were married. Now, the couple is engaged in an entirely different kind of love affair. They’ve fallen for the Abbey, the nine-bedroom Gothic Revival Villa on Gurney Street, built in 1869, that they purchased this past March. “We used to bring our four children to Cape May when they were young, and we’d walk up and down the streets, saying ‘Wouldn’t it be cool to own one of these big Victorians?’ It was a dream.” So, when the Tillmans came into some inheritance between 2008 and 2010 — they lost both of Barbara’s parents and IC’s dad — they decided to honor their memory by realizing this dream and taking over The Breakers house rental on Ocean Street. Never mind that their professional experience thus far was unrelated to the hospitality indus-
try — IC works as an electrical engineer and Barbara was formally trained as a medical secretary — they loved Cape May. “It’s unto itself,” Barbara said. “It’s just charming.” But owning The Breakers and operating it from Maryland, where the couple is still based, wasn’t enough for the Tillmans. “We began looking for a permanent residence in Cape May,” Barbara said. “Our real estate agent jokingly suggested the Abbey because it was for sale. My husband fell in love with the idea. I did not. It needed a lot of work. I was scared of it, honestly! But then we started to change our thinking: If we do another full-house rental, we thought, then maybe…” The Tillmans spent this spring renovating so that, after 30 years as a bed and breakfast, the Abbey would open as a full-house rental, restored to its original beauty. “We gutted the kitchen and what was once the galley/office area to replace them with two state-of-the-art kitchens with hickory plank wood floors, LG appliances, and a French door refrigerator. We put in a new mahogany porch from where you can listen to horse and carriages clip-clopping by, and we renovated all of the bathrooms. But we kept the antique furniture which was in such great shape. The idea was to bring in the modern amenities while keeping the incredible charm of the
house.” A house that, IC says, is very much a “man’s” domain. “Victorian Cape May is certainly something that appeals to women,” he told us, “but there’s something about the workmanship in this Victorian home — some of the furniture is hand-carved, even — that really spoke to me. And I think it’s something men will enjoy experiencing and exploring just as much as women.” And the Tillmans will enjoy hosting you when you come to explore… even if you show up early. “Our very first tenant arrived at 10 in the morning on July 21st,” Barbara told us. “The air-conditioning men, the plumber, the electrician, the painters, everyone was still there, trying to tie up loose ends, and he arrived with a giant pot of Italian sauce he wanted to put in the refrigerator straight away. That was just so funny to me. We’re having fun with this, finding our sense of humor under the stress, and that’s a very important thing. I feel like I’ve found my niche.” As for moving to Cape May permanently, that’s still in the cards… likely in the next year or two, when the Tillmans’ youngest leaves for college. “People in Maryland don’t know what it’s like here,” Barbara said.

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 “Sometimes they say ‘Really? New Jersey?’ because the state has such a stigma. We just ask if they’ve ever been to Cape May. It’s a very special place.”
Peeved About Parking
IN JUNE, we published a piece on parking in Cape May — the good, the bad and the ugly. But mostly, the bad and the ugly. With so many different ways to pay, there’s a lot of kiosk confusion around these parts at the height of summer. There’s no option to purchase a season pass, which we think would make parking a great deal more user friendly. And for all of the meter technology the city has invested in, we’re still behind the times… We recently took a trip to Wildwood where we found you can add time to your meter via your mobile phone, no pesky quarters required. Then today, we decided to test some of the kiosks located across from the Island Grill on Mansion Street, because we’d heard they’d been gypping people. We put in two quarters (supposedly good for 15 minutes each), and the machine spat out a ticket worth 35 minutes of parking, grace period
included and all... no problems there. But then we walked to a different machine, inserted a credit card, hit the button designated for 15 minutes (at least, we think it was the 15-minute button... it’s hard to tell), and the machine charged us for one hour. So we tried again. Same button. And this time we were charged for one hour and 20 minutes. What’s up with that? Even more disturbing, the machine didn’t “authorize” our credit card; it “authorised” it. With a big, fat S. Oy! But since we’re just coming off another Labor Day weekend — the time of year when you reflect upon what a great summer it’s
been in Cool Cape May — we’d like to devote some space to the best thing about parking in Cape May: The Parking Angels. This week, we paid a visit to Bill Causey — former chamber president, owner of The Antique Doorknob in West Cape May and, as we like to call him, head angel. Bill explained that the angels program, run through the Chamber of Commerce, got its start five years ago, and that every year since (with the exception of last year when Bill underwent open heart surgery), a few dedicated volunteers have used money donated by local merchants to buy more time — an hour, to be exact — on expired meters around town. The idea is to get to your car before a ticket-toting bike cop does. “We’ve had as many as 2,000 saves in a single season,” Bill told us. The angels carry approximately $30 worth of change and hit the streets for at least a couple of hours at a time. Even on days that are unbearably hot (“The Fourth of July a couple of years ago was especially so,” Bill said). And even though saving between eight and 30 people on a given night can sometimes require walking up to five miles (“At least it’s great exercise.”) And even though not everyone is supportive.

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 (“Sometimes, I’ll turn down a street and two bike cops will try to beat me to cars, to write tickets before I get there.”) And even though people often mistake Bill and his cohorts for the parking police. (“I could write a book about the number of times people have had an anxiety attack thinking that I’m issuing them a ticket.”) So what would compel someone to devote their time so generously? We have it on good authority that Bill even devotes some of his own money. “Anything that makes the experience of people visiting more positive is a good thing. And this doesn’t cost anyone a penny. I honestly don’t understand why anyone would object to it.” The program, Bill says, is also great PR for the city, as so much of his time on the streets is spent directing tourists to the nearest bathroom or ice cream cone. “Interacting with the people is what makes it fun,” Bill told us. Plus, it’s a “win-win” for the merchants in town, many of whom offer discounts to their restaurants or shops to those who’ve been saved. We spoke with Kay Bush, manager at the Mad Batter, which offers 15 per-
cent off. “We’ve had customers tell us that their parking tickets have spoiled their trip to Cape May,” she told us, “and we’ve had customers who’ve had to get up in the middle of a meal to feed their meters.” Never mind the number of employees who’ve been ticketed, Kay says. “So the Parking Angels is a nice thing… it generates a sense of goodwill. A lot of people have stopped by to say thank you.”
They’ve also expressed their thanks to Bill… in the form of free pizza from Blue Moon and free ice cream from Dairy Queen. “I’m blaming the Parking Angels for my open heart surgery,” he joked. So thanks, Angels. You’re much appreicated. On another positive parking note, the city may be getting change machines before next year. “Someone came to a council meeting to say that some of the tourists were angry, or miffed at least, that they couldn’t find change for their meters,” council member Bill Murray told us. “They were asking hot dog vendors and motels, and no one could change their dollars into coins. Rehoboth Beach has the coin changers, so I rode my bike over the following day, to gather information.” Right now, Murray told us, council is in contact with a sales manager who will send the pricing info, to see if this would be a feasible option for Cape May. Here’s hoping. Until next time, don’t forget to feed your meter, Cape May.
PARTING SHOT
We recently decided to take up a new hobby: tennis. It’s never to late to try something new, we figure, so we took a lesson at William J. Moore Tennis Center on Washington Street. And we stunk. But we can say that instructor Lionel Desrosiers had the patience of a saint, and even though we couldn’t seem to keep the ball on the court, he told us we weren’t hopeless. If you’re you’d like to try out your serve, call 609-884-8986. It’s fun, even if you stink.

The Undertow
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever
T
HIS week marks the end of my 82-day summer odyssey, assuming I’m alive when this goes to press. From mid-June to this Friday I worked every day (minus three personal days) at either the Ghost Ship or Terry O’ke. But now that’s over and I am about to enter the most stressful part of my year... Morey’s FEARS. As co-chair of the costume, make-up and acting departments, I will have a large say in the success or failure of the event. Yes, dozens of others will work tirelessly to ensure all the haunts get built, the lights get plugged in, the fog machines get filled, etc. And their work is immeasurable. But the simple fact is: what are your Halloween takeaways? Was it scary and did the actors look cool. It’s my job to make the answer to both those questions is a resounding, “YES!” It is a tremendous amount of work to get done in a ridiculously short period of time… and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Halloween Meeting of the Week: Two weeks ago the brain trust behind Morey’s FEARS (yes, that includes me, smart aleck) had a meeting which included many people above
my pay grade in natty suits and ties, several people at roughly my same pay grade in their crisp summer khakis and golf shirts, all of the ladies present in flowy, summery Morey’s Piers garb… and me in my black T-shirt and blood-spattered Dockers, in full zombie make-up. So just remember THIS the next time you feel out of place somewhere. I was EZ writer Diane Stopyra’s “Fun Fact” this week regarding Kiddy O’ke. I really hope she edits out all the expletives. I completed my contract at Congress Hall last Sunday with my final Kiddy O’ke show. We had a great season in the Boiler Room and hope we can do it again next year. Devon, Alexa, Frezel, Shane: I’ll miss you guys, but on the bright side I’ll spend
a lot less on cigarettes now not being in close proximity to Shane. Thanks. It was a blast. The Ugly Mug NOW hosts the best karaoke show in Cape May. Go see Jimmy J. on Wednesdays and say hello to Tom Caruso, who has worked at… actually, it’s probably easier to list the bars Tommy HASN’T worked in, and Casey Smith (if that IS her real name…), who is now a manager there. Jim, did she make YOU get Belinda Carlisle songs then NEVER sing them? The wife and kids were away last weekend, which means I was obligated to stay out too late. As such, I popped into the Rusty Nail on Sunday for a cold one. Corey Johnson and Joe Milder were working the bar in fine fashion, as ever, and BKG, a trio out of AC, were rocking the stage. The crowd was light but enthusiastic, and the band tore up some Maroon 5 and “Lido” during my brief stay. And some day I hope to be exactly like their lead singer; about 50, way too old to be belting out modern top 40 tunes but doing it anyway because I love it. Rock on, BKG. The Nail is different now, and that’s okay.

I still have a deep love for it since spending four of my prime years there singing with Southwind. This was back when I wasn’t such a miserable bitch. I was a slightly less miserable bitch. Before that, I had a cocktail at the Brown Room and listened to Audrey Snow, the young chanteuse I’ve mentioned before. She puts her own acoustic twist on non-traditional acoustic tunes and is a perfect fit for that room. However, I have now thrice requested she learn “That’s Just What You Are” by Aimee Mann, which she has not done, raising my ire because: (A) It is simply an exquisite pop song; (B) I’m an attention-whore and want to sing the harmony with her. Investigative Reporter of the Week: While at Dr Vecere’s in CMCH for my son Owen’s bracetightening, a mystery woman says to me, “I’m so glad Undertows back! The paper was so boring without you!” (Ahem, I agree). Like Woodward and Bernstein before they went all loopy, I dug deep (by that I mean I asked the receptionist) and found out it was Beth Poling. So, thanks Beth! It’s good to be back. [Editor’s Note: C’mon now, Beth...] Couple of other things from my visit; first, the receptionist, Kathy O’Brien (no relation) is a founding member of the Cape May Women’s Auxiliary (the name given to a group of Southwind groupies by Tim Joyce). Second, Dr Vecere is a pretty amazing guy, working with us financially to allow Owen to get the serious help he needed. The Veceres are a class act all the way around. I mean, they have an Xbox in the waiting room. How cool is that? “V”! No visit to Cape May is complete, for me, without a stop at the DQ. Ben & Jerry’s is too snooty (the ice cream, not the staff. Well, maybe the staff… a stunning example of how to make six workers look like one), Kohr Bros. is too… swirly. But DQ’s got the goods. Plus, Henry never finishes his, so I get to have THAT (if it gets by Cathrine, which it doesn’t). Nom nom nom…
Speaking of ice cream (God… now I want some) we went off the beaten path this week and ventured in Ella’s Good To Go, an ice cream/coffee shop adjacent to Gecko’s. Brian Lee, our sommelier, is an agreeably crunchy granola sort and explained that all their ice cream is homemade in West Cape May. I had a Mexican Mocha espresso (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, Ancho chile), which was delicious, and banana ice cream sprinkled generously with, you guessed it, granola. Mucho yummy. Apology of the Week: To Q Fire Grille, just over the bridge in Wildwood. I busted their chops a little last week, but finally got a chance to sit with owner Alfonso Cuoco, and it looks like we’ll be doing some Terry O’ke and/or Acoustic Mayhem and/ or BOTH this winter, starting in November. Nothing’s confirmed yet, but we got along famously (I am nothing if not an ingratiating bullshitter). Alfonso had a restaurant “just outside of NY” before moving down here to open Q, and tells me the ribs and paella are the house specialties. I don’t think I’ve ever had paella. I also swapped some movie and make-up war stories with his business partner, Lou, scrolling through our smartphones saying, “Oh yeah? Well in 1997 I worked on THIS movie…” Congratulations of the Week: To the newly liberated Will Knapp (Ding!). Um, let me rephrase that so his wife Holly doesn’t kill me… to the newly unemployed/ reemployed Will Knapp (Ding!). Will had a “you-can’t-fire-me-IQUIT!” moment at Splash Zone, and quickly started a new IT job, and continues to toil… work… work at Elaine’s (sorry, I’m still 1.8% bitter). If you know Will you know what a mensch he is (Holly and little Violet are okay, too). Will is also my musical better half (we make Acoustic Mayhem), and I’m glad he longer suffers the indignity of seven-day work weeks in the blazing heat on the Wildwood boardwalk for people who don’t properly appreciate him. Hey, wait… ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

8/17: Center For Community Arts Summer Camp At CM Elementary « This summer, the Center for Community Arts (CCA) held three eight-week Summer Art Camps at the Cape May City Elementary school: the Mini Camp for children four and five, the Kids’ Camp for kids six to nine and the YAP Camp for Tweens 10 to 14. In the fourth week, the YAP Camp kids enjoyed Kite Week. Following specific diagrams in order to construct the moster kite successfully, the kids built their own traditional diamond-shaped Kites, box kites, and the Asian “Dragon Kite” pictured here. “It was with anxious attention we waited for heavy winds to arrive so we could fly it,” said head teacher John Safrit. “We didn’t have enough wind until the very last day of camp and to our delight it took to air with the greatest of ease. The joy in the kids’ faces was award enough for all the fun we had assembling our amazing Dragon Kite.” PHOTOGRAPH BY JOHN SAFRIT... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

The Movie Column
W
By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival
E HAVE arrived. Post Labor Day in Cape May. But the upcoming season change is nothing compared to other changes that happen around town. The beaches might be less crowded, but the shoulder season presents a busy time of planning and buzz — especially when it comes to the weekends. Well this being a movie column, there is no more anticipated a weekend for film lovers than that of the Cape May Film Festival, so we wanted to provide you a glimpse of what is ahead for October 19-21 at the Chalfonte Hotel. The Festival will celebrate its 12th year, and in the relative life of film festivals, 12 years is a reason to celebrate. The national film festivals will always be in style, but the little local ones — well, let’s just say a lot of them fall by the wayside. But this community has always loved its films, and not just the celebrities but the independent spirit of filmmaking as well. And that indie spirit is alive and well in New Jersey! We received a lot of submissions this year — plenty of
Will Harry Stay with Sally? Find out at this year’s Cape May Film Festival! films to review. The big news is that we have a local who has gone on to produce one of this season’s most celebrated indie films. Chris Carroll, from Middle Township, is a producer on the film Beasts of the Southern Wild. This film is most assuredly Oscar worthy, but it hasn’t played very much locally, and we are working to bring it to the Festival so stay tuned. And watch for a review of the film in an
upcoming edition of this column. This year, the Festival is planning one of the best weekends it has ever offered. One program is called Romance: Impossible, hosted by the creators of the website reel-couples. com. On that website, creators Karyn Witzel and Caroline Corman rate couples who appear in our favorite movies to guess whether they’ll make it after the end credits. Harry and Sally? They make it. Melvin and Carol from As Good as It Gets? They don’t look so good together. We’ll also take a look at the work of Marilyn Monroe on the 50th anniversary of her death. It’s amazing how 50 years have gone by and Monroe’s influence can still be felt. Exhibit A: last year’s My Week with Marilyn, a film starring Michelle Williams, who was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. So there is a sneak peek of what we’re brewing up this fall! You’ll want to mark your calendars and plan to join us! Find out more about the Cape May Film Society at www.capemayfilm.org or by calling/texting 609-326-FEST (3378).

8/25: Friends of Anguilla Reunion At The Harbor View
«
Sue and Joe Polack travel frequently to the island of Anguilla in the British West Indies, where they have a villa (you may know it as the place where Jen and Brad finally called in quits!) When in their hometown of Swainton, the couple peruses online Anguilla travel forums, where they’ve connected with other people who’ve fallen in love with the beautiful vacation spot. “We all live vicarioulsy through each other’s vacations,” Sue told us. This year, she and Joe had the idea to plan a reunion for all of their Anguilla friends, and the Harbor View was the perfect spot because they were “so agreeable to offering an authentic Anguillan rum punch.” But for those of us who’ve never experienced this island oasis, take heart. “There’s a common thread between Anguilla and Cape May,” Sue said. “Both have an abundance of wonderful gourmet restaurants.”

It’s A Time For War At Historic Cold Spring Village
A
The Revolutionary War Encampment is a memorable weekend for kids and adults
UTHENTICALLY clad and equipped Continental and Loyalist reenactors bring the American Revolution to life on the grounds of Historic Cold Spring Village this weekend, September 8-9. At the Village’s Revolutionary War Encampment, visitors can see demonstrations of drills, equipment, and artillery firing. Civilian reenactors will also demonstrate the role played by typical Americans in supporting the army. “This is one of my favorite events,” said Jim Stephens, HCSV Deputy Director for Education and Interpretation. “New Jersey played a vital role in the Revolution and the re-enactors do a fantastic job of bringing that story to life for our visitors.” Stephens will also give a special presentation, The Story of Old Glory, a fascinating look at the origins and history of our nation’s flag on both Saturday and Sunday. Local historian Tom Camp will open the event with a free lecture, “South Jersey Privateers of the Revolution,” Friday night at 7pm in the Welcome Center. The

The Old Fogey
B
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ICYCLING is a strange affair, suited in the main to adolescents pedaling anxiously towards the forlorn hope of sexual congress. Not an evening passes here in Cape May that I do not witness a f lock of likely lads thundering past on their louche “beach cruisers” headed to this city’s watering holes with the aim of returning hours later with a drunken lady perched on the handlebars, bound for a clapboard boudoir and the false promise of fresh coffee. In my day, of course, we ALL rode bicycles, cars being but a fever dream of that blowhard Henry Ford. More care was put into those two-wheeled gems in those days — not just a mold in a factory in China churning out identical aluminum clones. My steed was artisan-carved from a piece of teak, with hand-chromed handlebars with a 4-foot spread, tires of India Rubber and a saddle of finest cow leather sprung with a score of tiny silver springs. There was a basket, too, large enough for the Young Albert of the day to perch,
along with whatever he had caught on the beach that morning (up to 100 pounds in weight: Albert was a voracious predator, though not a discerning one. I was as likely to be pedaling home with a brace of seagulls as a yellowfin tuna, or assorted parts of Shoebie). I needed a bell, too, there being some 35,000 other cyclists in this city, and clearly my need for priority was great. So I had Cape May Foundry (makers of cannon for the f ledgling US Navy) fashion a unique device: a brass

horn three feet in length, welded to the handlebars and powered by a canister of hydrogen. I remember the exact moment I activated the device; I was caught in a jam of inferior cyclists outside the Admiral Hotel, and even Albert’s barking and nipping at the elbows could not create space for us. So, with some pride, I leaned back on my saddle, f lipped the Bakelite cover on the red button and pushed. Well, what can I say? No-one had advised me to keep away from the device whilst smoking my morning cigarillo. I remember a toot of such force and volume that my hat f lew off. Then, as far as can be ascertained, the rushing hydrogen took fire as it passed my lips, and the f lame jetted back into the canister. The subsequent blast was cone-shaped, and fired Albert and I some quarter mile into the ocean, while the wide end of the cone alighted on the Admiral. By the time we were rescued by the Coast Guard, the hotel was no more and some 3,000 cyclists were hospitalized with ruptured eardrums. On the plus side, the morning commute was a bit easier.

EACH week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. This week’s recipient is Jack Jones, 67, from La Quinta, California. What are you up to today? Right now, I’m waiting for my wife on this beautiful promenade. I’m here visiting a good friend, the General Manager of Congress Hall, John Daily. Do you have any plans for later? A concert in Rehoboth Beach! When is the last time you got some flowers? This is the first time in 67 years I’ve ever received flowers... better late than never! We saw a B24, which my husband’s uncle flew in as a gunner during World War II, and we heard so many stories at Airfest... things not in history books. What’s Your Story?
Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? What’s your name and where are you from? I’m Shane Poehler, I’m 13 years old, and I’m from North Cape May. What are you doing here? Right now, I’m just skating on the promenade. But I’m in a rush to meet a friend at the arcade, where we’ll proably hang out all day. Are you looking forward to school? Well, I start on September 5, so I’m trying to make the most of summer while I still can! The theme for this week’s issue of Exit Zero is “biking” Are you a cyclist? I am; I actually have three bikes. Know any good tricks? I can do a 180-degree turn, but I prefer skating, as you can see! Interview by Gabi Urda PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I go out once a month with a group of girlfriends. Sometimes we go to a movie, sometimes a play, or an event at Convention Hall, then lunch or dinner at one of Cape May’s wonderful restaurants. We always have fun, but…this is going to sound strange, but here goes: one of my friends always eats off of our plates. At first it was cute, now it’s just annoying. She just reaches over with her fork, says “Ooh, that looks good!” and helps herself. She does it to all of us, and it drives us crazy! What do we do about this? — Keep Your Fork To Yourself Dear Forked This is indeed a bit bizarre, not to mention utterly uncivilized. It reminds the Answer Lady of when she was just an Answer Teenager, and invited her first boyfriend over for dinner, where the poor hapless fellow was
subjected to the loud, obnoxious table manners of the Answer Lady’s large, loud, obnoxious family – he was like a deer in headlights. But the Answer Lady digresses. If there are no consequences to one’s actions, one has no reason to stop. If you all sit there, gaping and silently fuming (and then sniping about her when she’s in the restroom) while she grazes from your plates, she will continue doing so. Certainly, friends should share, and if one friend offers another a bite from her plate, it should be gratefully accepted. For instance,
Cycle on over for some Great Deals!
the Answer Lady always offers a bite of her pulled-pork nachos to her dining companion whenever she is at Lucky Bones - but just one bite. Reaching over and grabbing it is another story. (Presumably, excluding her from your outings is not an option, as that would be the night you all get your picture taken for Exit Zero.) Has anyone just said “Hey, Marcia – quit it!”? It’s succinct, direct, and can be lighthearted if said the right way. And it’s better than being jabbed in the back of the hand with a fork. Dear Answer Lady I work in a large office. I like to bake, and usually bring something in each Monday. But if I make brownies, someone will inevitably say “Oh, what about that great banana bread?” If I bring blueberry muffins, someone else will say “What, no chocolate chip cookies?” How to please everyone? — Betty Crocker Dear Betty, You can’t please all of the people, all of the time, particularly this bunch of ingrates, sounds like. Place your offering on the break room table with this note: “Take it or leave it.”

The Ultimate Cape May Activity Guide
Whether you want family fun, or a romantic night out, you will find the answer in here... get reading!
Our advertising manager, Jason Black, took a trip to Delaware this past week, and one of his favorite parts was the ferry ride... and he didn’t even take advantage of the on-board bar! Check out our comprehensive Cape May to-do guide below, for more thrilling — or relaxing — activities.
C
APE May isn’t just a beach; it’s so much more than surf and sand. Not sure where to start? You’re in luck: we have assembled a complete guide to Cape May activities. Even locals might find something new. Plus, there are rainy day ideas, marked with a . Enjoy! FAMILY-FRIENDLY Cape May has a great variety of activities that you can enjoy with the entire family. Here is a handy and comprehensive list of ideas to get you started. 1. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive, educational and handson activities, visitors can make a connection with the past by experiencing it. The many authentically restored homes, amid idyllic shaded areas, make it hard to not feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier
when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. There is a themed event every weekend — Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 898-2300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. 2. Tidelands Eco-Tour Board the Osprey to learn about the rich history of Cape May’s waterways, like the creation of Cape Island, the dredging of the harbor, South Cape May, fishing fleets, the various features along the harbor, the Nature Center of Cape May, the Corinthian Yacht Club and more. The Osprey is conveniently located at the Miss Chris Marina. Offered at 10am, 1:30 and 6pm daily, with a 1-hour 4pm harbor cruise every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a small, quaint seaside town (kind of like this one!), then make sure you check out bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State Park. You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping
at the outlets. No matter what you choose once you’re there, you’ll enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins and whales on your way. They even have a bar onboard! For more information or to book a reservation, call 800-64FERRY or visit www.capemaylewesferry.com. 4. The First Resort Exhibit The First Resort by author Ben Miller is the basis for this exhibit sponsored by the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) at the Carriage House Gallery at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street. “Cape May’s 20th Century Renaissance: From the Pages of The First Resort” brings to life the key turning point in Cape May’s 20th century history. Visitors to the exhibit will be treated to rare photographs, video and a multitude of artifacts showcasing the years immediately before and after the city’s Urban Renewal movement. The exhibit will be open daily through November 4 and admission is free. Gallery hours vary. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit capemaymac.org. 5. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off
Page 86 Cape May, but it’s still a big thrill to see these beautiful creatures. Cape May Whale & Dolphin Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. And, as the name implies, you might even see a whale. Tours take off from Wilson Avenue. If the ship is docked you can see it on your left as you cross the small bridge before the Lobster House on your way out of town. For directions or more information, call (609) 8980055 or visit them on the web at www.capemaywhalewatch.com. 6. Historic Haunts House Tour Get into the Victorian spirit on a guided tour of the historic (and some say haunted) Physick Estate, and learn about the Victorians’ fascination with spiritualism, as well as today’s modern ‘“ghost-hunting” methods. Packet includes a clue sheet and map that will take you on a self-guided discovery tour. Packets for the entire family are available for $5. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit
Thursday, September 6, 2012 www.capemaymac.org. 8. The Museum Shop carries souvenirs, books, videos and other maritime items. Admission to the Visitors Orientation Center and the ground floor of the lighthouse is free. Tower admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children. For more information, call (609) 8845404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 10. Purchase tickets at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth.
Admission is $7 and includes a booklet that describes the plants found in numbered areas throughout the property. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 11. Bay Springs Alpaca Farm This one’s hard to believe, but Cape May has an alpaca farm. Near the end of beautiful New England Road, Warren and Barbara Nuessle live what they call the “alpaca lifestyle” — quiet and simple. Visit them between 10am and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays and see how alpaca fiber is spun into yarn, or shop at their store which carries many alpaca-related items (forget wool: go with an alpaca sweater this winter!) And don’t forget to greet the grazing alpacas – they make it all possible. Call (609) 884-0563 or visit www.bayspringsalpacas.comfor more information. 12. Combination Trolley/Physick Estate Tour First of all, hop on this guided trolley tour of Cape May’s Historic District, then enjoy a tour of its only Victorian house museum, the Emlen Physick Estate, located at 1048 Washington Street. Activity Of The Week
M
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Have a root beer float.
AKE time in your Cape May vacation for the Wildwood boardwalk, a seashore experience as deliciously tacky as salt water taffy. The boardwalk is a slice of Americana on the Jersey Shore — thrill rides, shops and carnival games in a honky tonk atmosphere. Smells compete for your attention, and you soon find yourself hungry for food you’d never eat at home — fried Twinkies and Oreos, pizza at every turn, Polish ices, and soft serve ice cream in every imaginable flavor. Music pours from speakers on every pole, changing, as you walk, from new pop to old rock to tinny vaudeville. It’s a feast for the senses. Try the games with a playful attitude. For every player who claims they are unwinnable, there’s a kid with a story about getting asked to leave the basketball stand because he won too many teddy bears. Some of the stalls guarantee a winner every time. There’s also a guy who will guess your weight, the Ghost Ship and a haunted house to scare the heck out of you, and roller
No trip to the Jersey shore is complete without a ride on the ferris wheel. coasters to give you all the shake, rattle and roll you expect from a Doo Wop town like Wildwood. The wares displayed in boardwalk shops can make for some awkward conversations, especially for parents whose kids are just learning to read. Think of it as a chance to give them YOUR definitions of the words they’re hearing on the playground, so they don’t listen to some mod-
ern-day Eddie Haskell. There are also a lot of fun, G-rated items, like hermit crabs, “Hello Kitty” everything, and wax hands. There’s still plenty of time for the boardwalk — after Labor Day, the hours may be reduced, but the fun isn’t. You can still enjoy yourself on weekends and in the evenings, and there are plenty of special events, like car shows, concerts, and monster trucks. In October, the fun turns macabre, when Morey’s Piers transforms into Morey’s Fears, a $30 per night fright fest. When you go, wear sunscreen and comfortable shoes. Purchase a wristband if you plan to ride several rides; otherwise just buy the “tickets” to load onto your MOR—EZ card, and wear that card on a lanyard around your neck. Consider keeping a change of clothes in the car in case anyone gets wet or sick. Take lots of pictures. Nobody will remember the lines or the time you missed the tram and had to walk the whole way. Like saltwater taffy, memories of the fun you had on the boardwalk stick with you. Next week: Historic Cold Spring Village

How about a new style for fall! (609) 884-3011 • 1400 Texas Ave., Cape May
to get out and try. Keep moving! 1. Golf Cape May National Golf Club has “three of the best holes in New Jersey” according to The Jersey Golfer and is nestled in 50 acres of private bird sanctuary. (Visit Cape May National at www.cmngc.com or call 609-884-1563.) But, if it’s your wedge that needs some work, Cape May Par 3 will let you play 18 holes for just $15.95. No bag? No problem. Cape May Par 3 rents clubs for just $1. Visit them at www.capemaypar3.com or call (609) 889-2600. 2. Bike Ride It’s no secret: Cape May is a biking town. Have you even tried to navigate the streets of Cape May during rush hour? It’s enough to make you want to start jogging to your destination. But have no fear; there are bike rentals that beat braking (and braking again, then honking, then braking once more). Try Cape Island Bikes at 727 Beach Avenue or 135 Sunset Boulevard, (609) 884-8011. 3. Nature Trails Next to the lighthouse in the Cape May Point State Park there are several trails weaving through ponds, dunes, marsh and forest. There are different levels of difficulty marked by colors and most of the trails have wooden walkways. Even on the longest trails, breathtaking scenes in a tranquil setting will make you wish it was longer. Just make sure you wear comfortable shoes. 4. Yoga Yoga on the beach is a beautiful thing, and Judy Heany of Balance Pilates, located at 600 Park Boulevard in West Cape May, has a whole dance card of choices. There are classes on the Jackson Street beach on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8am. Over and above that, you can join a Balance class at the Montreal Inn and the Inn of Cape May (see the ad on this page for more details). Call Judy Heany at 609-884-3001. Karen Manette Bosna also offers beach yoga at Cape May
Point State Park on Saturday at 9:30am, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8am. Classes are $10. Karen also holds Yoga on beach in Cape May behind Convention Hall on Saturdays at 8am for $5. Call 827-8886 or check yogacapemay.com for more info. 5. Tennis The William J. Moore Tennis Club — named after the first black (as well as the oldest) tennis pro in America — rents rackets, balls and courts. It’s located next to the Physick Estate on beautiful tree-lined Washington Street, and there are always a variety of local characters up for a game, match, or set. The courts are open to the public daily for just $10 per hour and a half. For more information call (609) 884-8986. 6. Horseback Riding At Hidden Valley Ranch, you can take lessons in the pastimes of heroes and kings under the watchful gaze of Nancy Hall and her daughter Angi Dickenson, who have nearly 70 years of combined equine experience. Saddle up. Call Hidden Valley Ranch at (609) 884-8205 for more information, or check them out on facebook. 7. Fishing Cape May is one of the busiest commercial fishing ports in the US. The sport fishing is big business, too... AND a whole lot of fun. South Jersey Marina boast the Murderer’s Row, a top-notch selection of boats with crews who know these waters better than anyone. Try the experienced team of Stalker Sport Fishing: (609) 231-9611, or the Miss Chris fleet: (609) 884-3939. For all your bait and tackle needs, stop by Jim’s Bait and Tackle on Route 109 by the harbor: (609) 884-3900. 8. Tidal Marsh Tour by Kayak Explore Cape May County’s most beautiful salt marsh via sit-on-top kayaks. It’s a great way to see nesting ospreys, herons, egrets and assorted crabs. There are two excellent options to choose from. Aqua Trails at 1600 Delaware Avenue in the Nature Cen-

VINNIE is a wonderful and happy 12-year-old male Shepherd/Lab mix. This spunky guy came to the shelter as a stray but he had a good family life before that; he is so friendly and submissive, and knows a couple of basic commands. Vinnie has very good energy so he loves to go for walks and plays with toys. He’s rare in that he can go to a home with dogs, cats and kids. The adoption fee is only $8.
«
JAMISON is a black two-year-old long-haired Shepherd. This sweet girl is a bit nervous at first, but with just a little patience, you will be her best friend. Jamison knows some basic commands and since she is submissive, with a calm, tolerant owner she will be eager to learn more. She is also very energic, and will need lots of exercise! Jamison might not get along with other dogs. The adoption fee is $95.

8/18: Gladys Mendo’s 75th Birthday Party On Idaho Avenue
If I’ve learned anything in my seventy-five years, it’s that you have to be kind to people, even the nasty ones. I take a walk every day, and I put people’s newspapers on their porches. H
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
AVE you seen the movie? The one with Steve Martin, Jack Black and some other guy whose name I forget right now and can’t be bothered to look up. It wasn’t exactly up there with the Twilight Saga but… “The Big Year?” Quick synopsis. Three young to middle-aged males independently spend a year birding all over North America to try to see as many bird species as possible. They go to Texas to experience a “fallout.” They travel by helicopter to the Ruby Mountains of Nevada to see Himalayan Snowcock. They go to Attu and live in an abandoned Coast Guard Station to try and see birds that don’t know where the International Dateline falls. They all see over or close to 750 species. One guy gets the girl. One guy discovers there’s no place like home. One guy goes to China. Oh? You’ve seen the movie. Well... fine. My reason for writing: There seems
to be a misconception f loating around out there. Some people who have seen The Big Year conclude that it is just a comedy. A spoof. Au contraire! The movie is very real, based upon three real live birders who really did (most of) the things portrayed in the movie and who were engaged in a challenge that is
widely practiced among birders. This “challenge” by the way is called “doing a Big Year” — hence the name of the movie (those clever producers!). If you find this hard to believe, that three mature individuals would spend tens of thousands of dollars and travel tens of thousands of miles in pursuit of birds, then you are plainly unfamiliar with our species. Homo sapiens have been known to do the most outlandish things. Actions and endeavors that have nothing at all to do with eating, sleeping or reproducing. For example, some of us have been known to sit on f lagpoles for no other reason than somebody else did it longer. We’ve been known to starve ourselves to the point of death in order to make a point. We expose ourselves to the sun in order to turn a different color. Put gunk all over our bodies in order to prevent it. Cover our bodies with clothes to be appealing. Take off our clothes to be even more appealing.

No matter which half of the Twin Capes you’re on, there’s always more to see and explore waiting on the other side. And there’s no better way to get there than the Cape May–Lewes Ferry. From the waterparks in Delaware, to Victorian architecture in Cape May, if you aren’t visiting both sides of the Twin Capes, you’re missing half the fun.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 111 Yes, we’re a curious species, driven by curious drives and aspirations. Why should wanting to run all over a continent in search of birds be considered the least bit odd? Unless, of course, you live in Cape May. Where all you have to do is just go outside and wait for all the birds in the world to come to you. I admit it may take a while. Some birds, like Himalayan Snowcock, have limited ranges. Others are f lightless. But, living as we do in a place that sees nearly 350 species every year does suppress the “Big Year” gene that lies latent in all of us. Not that you can’t do a Cape May Big Year. See how many species of birds you can see south of the Cape May Canal. You can still get the girl (or guy). You get to prove there is no place like home. China? Eh. The birding is better here — and easier to find. What do you need to do your own Cape May Big Year? Birding map, checklist, binoculars, spotting scope, perhaps a field guide or some bird call CD’s. Then you need to head over to the Cape May Bird
Owen Wilson, Jack Black, and Steve Martin star in the birding comedy The Big Year Observatory — THE place for all of your nature needs. CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), and is open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm. You can ask the staff for help, you can pick up a free birding map, checklist, and you could pick up a schedule of our daily walks just to get you started in the right direction. You can also talk to our staff about the best optics for birding, check out field guides and anything else you might need — or don’t know you need yet! Our staff are always willing to help with any questions. While you are there, scan the book-
shelves for some bargains in the used and vintage books section (maybe even a slightly used field guide), look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory, or just browse around. Take a look at the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen out in the field, and check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars. You can join Pete for his Monday morning walk at the South Cape May Meadows. Just meet by 7:30am in The Nature Conservancy parking lot on Sunset Blvd. Loaner binoculars are available at no cost; the walk is $6 for CMBO or NJ Audubon members; $10 for non-members. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times.

« FUN FACT... Every year, the Facciola family reunion has a different theme. This year, the motif was Hawaiian luau, and the Aloha Hula Show band out of Williamstown, NJ, which Marianne Facciola found on gigmasters.com, provided the soundtrack. “I can’t say enough,” Marianne told us. “I closed my eyes and I felt as though I was listening to Fleetwood Mac.”

8/7: Second Annual Iron Chef Cook-Off At Conifer Village
«
This month, Genesis Healthcare, Emeritus Senior Living and Conifer Village partnered for their second Iron Chef Challenge. Chefs from Victoria Manor, Victoria Commons, North Cape Center and Emeritus of Cape May made their best macaroni and cheese dish for the residents of Conifer Village, battling it out for bragging rights. First Place — as well as the People’s Choice award — was presented to Chef Don Donaldson of Victoria Commons Assisted Living. His dish was served in martini glasses, each complete with a fried lobster garnish. “It was a big hit,” said Community Relations Director for Emeritus Senior Living, Jessica Silva. “It will definitely be happening next year.”
