Subscriber Of The Week
Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Cythia Cook of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. How long have you been coming to Cape May? About five years now. Who are you normally with? My boyfriend, Kevin. We usually stay two weeks, sometimes three. Favorite thing about Cape May? The great restaurants... and how clean it is! Least favorite thing? Geez, I don’t think I have a least favorite. Maybe parking? Although, I’m usually pretty lucky! Favorite restaurants? The Copper Fish for upscale dining, Lucky Bones for a more casual experience, and about fifteen more. Favorite place to stay? La Mer. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? That’s tough. I do think Convention Hall looks a bit out of place. It doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of the beach area. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? I like being able to keep in touch. We wouldn’t have known, for example, that George Mesterhazy passed away if it weren’t for Exit Zero. I like knowing what to expect. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I’d like to see more of the great commentary. What’s your T-shirt size? XL, please!
Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Diane Stopyra. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Quotes Of The Week
Random Factoid
“Football combines two of the worst things in American life. It is violence punctuated by committee meetings.” — George Will “When you win, nothing hurts” — Joe Namath “People say they’re not like apes. How do you explain football then?” — Mitch Hedburg
THE first widely publicized Super Bowl commercial, one for Noxema, aired in 1974. It was an ad for Noxzema, featuring quarterback Joe Namath and former Miss Sweden Gunilla Knutson. In last year’s ads, commercials that did not feature celebrities did 9.2% better than those that did. Go figure.
Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... The Touchdown FOOTBALL season is upon us, which means men are pulverizing one another like a bunch of Neanderthals on fields across America. But just because our sport isn’t civilized, doesn’t mean our drink shouldn’t be. Here’s a refreshing recipe for your next tailgate, coutesty of The Bartending School. We like it best served in a Mason Jar. Hut, hut!
Ingredients: 4 oz bourbon 8 oz lemonade 8 oz iced tea (unsweetened) MIX bourbon and iced tea in a large glass filled with ice. Strain equal parts into two jars filled with fresh ice. Top with lemonade to taste, and garnish with a lemon slice or a sprig of mint.

Talk Of The Town
Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
Driven Crazy
A SEASIDE retreat is supposed to be just that — a retreat. Oftentimes, it’s a reprieve from the gridlock of city living our visitors seek. And for the most part, Cape May provides that. Breathtaking sunsets, sea breezes on sunny porches, cool cocktails in relaxing bars… we weren’t just ranked number seven in Budget Travel’s 10 Coolest Small Towns in America contest for nothing. There’s so much here to bring a stress level down. And something that makes it rise. We’re talking about the intersection where Perry Street meets Myrtle Street, and where those two roads meet Park Boulevard, and where a bunch of drivers sit bewildered, inching forward, without the foggiest idea what they should be doing. We were in CVS earlier this week, which sits at the corner of all the intersection madness, and we ran into Rusty Nail bartender Sara Werner. As a child, she told us, she would play street hockey in the CVS parking lot, and count how many cars traveling south on Park Boulevard would slide right through the second stop sign. (Okay, there’s not really a second stop sign here… just a painted line which suggests that stopping again before crossing Perry Street would be a good idea, because from the position of the actual sign, you can’t really tell if you’re about to get pulverized by a MAC truck.) West Cape May Mayor Pam Kaithern told us that Sara isn’t the only one with concerns. “For some time,” she said, “the borough has been very cognizant of the intricacies of that intersection. It’s been a subject of study and, at this point, the county freeholders have hired a consulting firm by the name
of Urban Design for a new layout. What we’re planning to do is put in a roundabout.” Pam directed us to County Engineer Dale Foster, who assured us the project will not impact the park that runs parallel to Myrtle, that a roundabout is a good fit for the space because, unlike a circle, it forces everyone to reduce speed, and that there will be a public information meeting held at some point this winter, once all the studies are completed. “We’re hoping to fund the work with federal money from a safety improvement program, so we’re in the process of producing many different types of documents,” he told us. It’s a process that can’t happen quickly enough, according to Doug Carnes, owner of the Wilbraham Mansion Bed and Breakfast on Myrtle Street and President of the West Cape May Business Association. “Bottom line,” he said, “is that this is a poorly conceived corner. There is absolutely a lot of traffic confusion because of it. It’s brutal. It’s the definition of a defensive intersection. I do something illegal every day… I don’t signal when I’m driving to the Wilbraham Mansion from Jackson Street down Perry, because how is the person at the Park Boulevard stop sign going to know that I’m turning onto Myrtle instead of Park? I don’t want to confuse them, and I don’t want to get hit.” Regular readers of this column will remember an accident a couple of years back that involved a woman on a bicycle being dragged by a utility truck upon approaching this intersection. It’s surprising to us (and to CMPD officer Tony Genaro… we called him) that there aren’t more accidents here. We’re willing to bet it has something to do with the fact that everyone’s usually going so slowly, because of all the confusion. “If you want my
opinion,” Tony said, “it’s a complete mess.” We agree. Watch this space for updates on our future roundabout.
The Show Must Go On
IF YOU were so much as an extra in your kindergarten Christmas play, you’ve heard the well-trodden theater expression “break a leg,” but… break a shoulder? That’s what happened to Osborn Focht, one of the stars of Cape May Stage’s Time Stand Still, on Reading Avenue Beach last Wednesday. Osborn had taken a break from rehearsing for a bit of bodysurfing and, with just one week to go before curtain, a powerful wave took the actor out of commission. “I was in water less than waist-deep,” Osborn told us. “I stood up to get out of the surf, and I got rolled by a wave I never even saw.” His shoulder hurt, Osborn said, but no more so than a “knuckle punch.” Which is why he was so surprised the next day, when the doctors at Cape Urgent Care gave him the diagnosis (fracture) and the treatment (four weeks in a sling). “I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “But there’s a crack in there.” Osborn, who started working on the role on his own last spring before arriving in Cape May for official rehearsals on May 27, is devastated. “This meant so much to me,” he said. “I just loved this show, and it was so close to opening.” We asked him if he’d considered going on with the play anyway. After all, it’s a drama that tells the story of a photojournalist and a foreign correspondent… how hard could it be to write a bum shoulder into the script? “It’s intricate to the plot that my character is the one who’s mentally damaged,”

“It took three hours to get through all of the froth-blowing rounds,” said Officer Tony Genaro, who was one of this year’s judges. Usually the contest takes place the last Sunday in August, and the risky move to September didn’t affect the turn-out at all, according to Genaro. Aleksey Moryakov
Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 Osborn explained. “It’s his wife that becomes physically so in this story.” Apparently, she’s already sporting a sling. So what’s a theater company to do? The show must go on, as they say in the biz, and Cape May Stage’s Artistic Director, Roy Steinberg, wasn’t about to throw in the towel… although he was worried. “It’s always terrifying to lose an actor,” he told us. “I always have a Plan B and C, but this time, all of the actors I called were busy working on film and television projects. One was getting married; another, leaving for Europe.” Luckily, Roy says, “the angels were on my side.” Penny Bergman, the director of the show which recently wrapped at Cape May Stage, The 39 Steps, was able to recommend a replacement… And not just an he’ll-dobecause-otherwise-we’re-screwed type of replacement, but an “A-list Emmy nominee” by the name of Jon Lindstrom, who was an As The World Turns regular. We’d also like to point out that Jon played (in his words) “the jerk volleyball player” and “really nice dolphin trainer” on Baywatch, even though “the most interesting thing about that was working alongside Pamela Anderson.” When Jon got the call about the opening
at Cape May Stage, he was on his way back to California, this time not to run oiled up and in slow motion down the beach, presumably, but to work on several film projects there. “He postponed his trip,” Roy told us, “partly because he’s heard such great things about Cape May Stage and the high production value of our shows. I feel blessed to have an actor of Jon’s caliber.” Jon seems equally excited, although he prefaced our conversation by saying he didn’t have a lot of time to chat about it — Time Stands Still is not a play Jon was even familiar with until this week, and he’s got rehearsing to do. “Usually, it takes a minimum of two weeks to prepare for a show like this,” he told us. “I’ve been at it all day, running lines all night… any moment I have. This is a huge mountain to climb. The play is excellent, and the better a play, the deeper the emotions and subtext go. But this is definitely exciting, and everyone has been so welcoming.” We’ve got a feeling Jon and the rest of the cast will pull off another spectacular Cape May Stage opening, even with this abbreviated rehearsal schedule. And we’ll be in the audience at some point during the show’s run to watch them break a leg... figuratively.
A Frothy Good Time
WE’RE pretty sure you’ve heard of the Annual Froth-Blowing contest at the Ugly
Mug. How could you not have? It’s a big deal. People have flown in from Ohio just for this contest. It’s been written up in Philadelphia Magazine. It’s what some folks this year scheduled their family reunion around, according to Mug manager Casey Smith. But just in case you’ve been living under a rock (and even then, we’re not sure you wouldn’t have heard about this), here are the Cliffs Notes: You turn up, pay $5 (which benefits the Police Athletic League), get a beer with a lot of head on it, and try to blow as much foam from your glass as you can in one breath, or at least more than the other contestants. Why? Because it’s fun. Not the good, clean kind of fun (there is far too much beer flying everywhere for that, and far too many sexual innuendos flying around, too), but good, dirty fun. We showed up at the start — around 5:30pm — because we wanted to see the poncho-wearing judges, a mix of police officers and Mug bartenders, announced.. which they were, as the Official Polka Dancing Club of Cape May because, well, why not? The place was packed already… not an empty bar stool, and some people were even perching themselves on the backs of the restaurant’s booths to secure a good view of the action. We sidled up next to local Carl Schnek-

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 enburger because he’s been entering this contest since 2001 (he was sporting his 2001 contestant T-shirt), and we thought we could pick his brain. “Some guy talked me into it after an afternoon at Carney’s, because I’m easy to convince after a few beers,” he told us, “and I almost won. I lost in a final blow-out, and once you get that close, you get hooked.” What’s the secret? “You can’t be afraid to get wet,” he told us. That, and “it helps if you’re sober.” Sober is something the guy beside us — 51-year-old Ron Yowell — was struggling to be. “I don’t drink except for this one night,” he said, which is why the bartender served Ron’s Miller Lite with a glass of water and a Red Bull. “Gotta balance out the beer,” he said. “I’m staying at the Victorian Motel, but I can’t get wasted before my first heat.” This would be a particular shame, considering that Ron, a casino worker from Galloway Township, has been practicing for this contest after getting done his shifts in the middle of the night. “I make a mixture of water and dish detergent that foams up nicely so I don’t waste the beer,” he told us, “I’ll catch myself blowing froth at 3:30 in the morning, but I
shouldn’t say that.. you’re going to think I’m too into this.” No, Ron, we think you’re too into this because you scoured the internet for a practice glass that closely matches the eight-ounce ones used during the contest at the Mug, because you bought goggles to protect your eyes from splashing, and because you told us to “become the froth.” Justin Mogavero, General Manager of the Virginia Hotel and a member of frothblowing team Meat Jerking Beef Boys (uh, what?) told us to forget all that… the most important thing is to “catch the lip of the glass on an angle.” Don’t come from above, he warned; it’s all about the angle. Around this time, MC Jeff Walden called your reporter’s name, because it was her turn to blow. She took her place at the bar where Officer/froth judge Tony Genaro waited to squirt her with a Miller Lite-filled water pistol. It was a direct hit to the eye (hmm, maybe Ron’s goggles would have been a good idea after all), which was not a great start to the competition. But after a tie-breaking
blow-off with Chris Wimberg, she ended up on top, even beating out one of the members of Cape May County’s Official Budweiser Drinking Team: Team Stand-by. (Booyah!) What does an official Budwesier Drinking Team do, we wanted to know? “We show up at different events at support them,” said Stand-by member Evan Sulliban, who happened to be celebrating his 34th birthday. “Blood drives, beef and beers, the fireman’s convention.” And of course, froth-blowing, which they practice for throughout the winter months. All in all, it was a great night, with over $1,300 raised for the Police Athletic League. There were 42 rounds of competition, each with five contestants who fought the good fight. But the title of US Froth Blowing Champion went to one of the Mug’s own, bartender Amanda Peck. “Some people prefer a real quick short breath,” she told us, “but I did a long breath.” Take note, all of you who are gearing up for next year’s contest.
PARTING SHOT
Artizan Salon And Spa has not changed locations, despite stories to the contrary, which were sparked by a recent article in the “Press of Atlantic City”. What IS true is that Artizan became a little smaller, giving up some space in their Park Boulevard location that turned into a Volunteers in Medicine thrift shop. But, other than that, nothing has changed... the folks there are still offering the exact same range of services.

The Undertow
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever
H
ERE it is, the first-ever Undertow Interview — with Tony Herr, of Cape Atlantic Book Company on the Washington Street Mall, where my anthology, Murder-Oke! & Other Spooky Cape May Tales, is selling quite well for some reason. Don’t panic; even though I’m interviewing Tony, it’s still all about me… Have you read Murder-Oke? If so, do you find it to be the “heartbreaking work of staggering genius” my mother says it is? I am glad you are only listening to the truly objective critics… Yes, I have. There, I admitted it in print; it cannot be retracted. I have always enjoyed reading your column and short stories, I think, because you write like the conversations I have in my own head… manic, adrenaline-pumping but sane and well thought out, exquisitely executed… at least to me. So, genius would be appropriate. Good answer. Were you aware that, with 30 copies sold, Cape Atlantic Book Co. is one of the three most successful outlets of Murder-Oke? And does it surprise or sadden you that 30 copies sold makes you a top three
Murder-Oke outlet? While my partner Patrick and I did not expect this to happen during our first season we knew in our hearts that it was inevitable given your writing skills and our superior marketing and sales acumen. Could anyone really expect any different result? Saddened at 30 copies sold? Dude, you were up against some serious heavyweight literary contenders this summer. After buying 10 million copies of Fifty Shades of Grey and five new releases from James Patterson, that the American reading public still had cash enough to purchase 30 copies of Murder-Oke! from us is awesome in the least. And let’s be honest here, how many of the rest of us sold 30 copies anywhere of anything we wrote?
That’s what I keep saying! You’ve read Murder-Oke. Have you read every book you sell? I haven’t even read something by each author we have represented. And if I had, I wouldn’t admit it since that would mean admitting to reading all or part of the Fifty Shades series. Which sounds like a worse idea; an elaborate Murder-Oke pop-up book, or a MurderOke audio book read by Jack Wright? I think it depends on your target audience, but for my money I would like to see the two combined; a pop-up book with accompanying audio by Jack Wright, maybe reading or maybe just providing sound effects and popping up occasionally in the pop-up book. I see what you did there… Who are your favorite authors, and whom do you recommend to tourists on a regular basis? This is a difficult question; I’ve always read across many genres so when asked I have to try and narrow down the interests of the customer. I often recommend Elin Hilderbrand, Jodi Picoult, Nicholas Sparks and Jennifer Weiner. I like to try and direct people to the local talent

Thursday, September 13, 2012 The Undertow ? From Page 43 and also to the recent releases of first time authors and independently published authors, not just in an attempt to support the starving artist but because these works really are very good. I’m always looking for story ideas to steal; what sort of short story would you like to see me tackle next in Exit Zero? (Bonus points for saying “A Zombie Christmas Story.”) A Zombie Christmas Story, especially during this election season, is metaphorically on point, and that’s all I’m gonna say. Who are the most underrated/ overrated authors, in your opinion? Underrated: Colum McCann – Let the Great World Spin, Joshua Cohen – Witz. Overrated: James Patterson. You thought I’d say Fifty Shades of Grey? Maybe a close second, but how can you overrate 10 million copies sold in three months? That’s more than any one of the Harry Potter books. But back to James. I mean really, two new books a month? The stories are that compelling? This is why I make an effort to get away from the corporate publisher BS and educate and immerse myself with the independent author and publisher. There will some day be a James Patterson book that consists solely of chapter titles. What are your favorite genre and/or books? History has been my choice of late, but I think my favorite is still fiction. By that I mean fiction-fiction, not historical fiction, or romantic fiction, or thriller fiction, or LGBT fiction, or African-American fiction, or European American fiction, or stubborn Pennsylvania Dutchman American fiction, just good old tell-the-freaking-story fiction. Jonathan Littel and his novel The Kindly Ones, Colum McCann and Let the Great World Spin, Peter Heller and The Dog Stars, Julian Barnes and his shorton-pages but enormous-onhuman experience The Sense of an Ending, and certainly not least is Paulo Coelho, author of Aleph. I enjoy these works because they are written about me — the average guy trying to find his way
through life. With book chains closing left and right and print media often referred to as a dying breed or dinosaur, what made you want to open a book shop? Same reason I’ve always wanted to open a comic book shop? No, probably not. My partner and I are both opportunists, not lost in the fog of nostalgia. We realized there was going to be a large void with the closing of Atlantic Books, so we jumped in. And in the sinkor-swim way we seem to live our lives we discovered we’re swimming quite well. Now we intend to squeeze every customer for every last nickel and dime they have and retire to another island chain a few countries south. Have you ever karaoke-ed. If not, what song would you sing if you did? Even after making several breweries and distilleries very, very rich, I could never quite drink the fear away. But now I’ll let you into my dark and twisted secret place. If I were to ever karaoke it would be Jennifer Holliday’s “And I am Telling You”, from Dream Girls. Only god, and now everyone reading this, know how often I belted out this song alone in my bedroom to roaring standing ovations every time. Wow… NOW we’re getting somewhere. What were your top-selling books this season? And if Fifty Shades of Grey is among them does it make you weep in the shower at night? #1 Fifty Shades of Grey, #2 Fifty Shades Deeper, #3 Fifty Shades Freed, #4 Game of Thrones, #5 Clash of Kings. Yes, my soul sobs piteously for mankind, Amerikind in particular, but the Fifty Shades trilogy paid our rent this summer. Now my last and most important question; are you a member of the Herr’s potato chip dynasty? No, I grew up on Stehman’s Potato Chips. Anything you’d like to add? We are still open seven days a week, and will remain open five days through early spring. If any local merchants would like to be the subject of the next Undertow Interview, drop me a line at info@exitzero.us. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow. Or do.

East Lynne Stages A Mad Romp
N
Screwball comedy “It Pays to Advertise” opens on September 19
INETY-SEVEN percent of the public believe what they’re told, and what they’re told is what the other chap’s been told — and the fellow who told him read it somewhere,” announces marketing maven Ambrose Peale to would-be businessman Rodney Martin in It Pays to Advertise. The Equity professional East Lynne Theater Company presents this screwball comedy from September 19 through October 13, with an 8:00pm curtain. It is the usual Wednesday through Saturday schedule, except there is no show on Wednesday, October 3, and an added show on Sunday, October 7 at 7:30 p.m. On Wednesday, September 19 is an after-show opening night party at Aleathea’s Restaurant at The Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean Street, where patrons have the opportunity to mingle with actors and fellow theater lovers while indulging in complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Written by Roi Cooper Megrue and Walter C. Hackett, It Pays to Advertise was a Broadway hit that was twice made into a movie: a silent in 1919, and in 1931 with Carole Lombard. The premise — and promise —
The cast of It Pays to Advertise: back, Glen Corlin, Tom Byrn, Phil Pizzi, and Thomas Raniszewski. Front: John Cameron Weber, Kate Shine, Matt Baxter Luceno, and Maria Silverman that anything can be sold is at its core, but it also examines the very nature and romance of advertising. Decades before AMC’s Mad Men, it demonstrates that an ad campaign might be better than the product. All it takes is one adventurous young man to announce, “Advertising is responsible for everything!”
and he and his two friends are off and running in this mad romp. The performances are at The First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, 500 Hughes Street. Tickets are $30, $25 for seniors, and $15 for full-time students. Call (609) 884-5898 or visit www.eastlynnetheater.org.

Fed up of leaving the outcome of the game to pure chance? We have struck a deal with some highly reputable priests and wrinkled old gypsies to bless/curse a selection of footballs. Whether you play yourself and want to have a few extra touchdowns come your way, or gift it to an enemy, you NEED our “lucky” balls. The Movie Column
A
By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival
NNA Kendrick is one of those actresses to watch, one that you’ve seen in movies and say, “Oh, I remember her in…” There were two films in which she appeared that have really impressed me. The first was Up in the Air (2009), when she got an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of a mousey employee termination consultant who’d never fired anyone in her life. The second film was 50/50 (2011), when she played a mousey cancer patient doctor who hadn’t treated many cancer patients. She is probably most famous for her role of Jessica in the Twilight series and, sorry, I have not seen those films so I can’t tell you if that particular character is mousey or not. And yes, it’s not lost on me that maybe a pattern is emerging in her young career, but she may be about to break free from the mousey roles in her latest film, Pitch Perfect. This movie is like Glee for the big screen. In the film, the main character (played by Kendrick) is struggling to find her place as a freshman on campus. She finds refuge in an all-female a cappella singing group
Anna Kendrick, star of Pitch Perfect, is an “actress to watch,” according to our guy desperately trying to claim first place in a national competition almost invariably won by a rival all-male ensemble. Okay maybe this comedy doesn’t present a lot of “breakthrough” roles for anyone on the cast, but it is a better than average, quintessential chick flick (I know, because I brought my two daughters to the preview screening, and not surprisingly, they loved it!). Predictable, light, and sometimes bor-
derline silly, the film never quite fell to the “this is junk” redline section of my review meter, but that might just be because I saw my daughters enjoying it too much. And it also might be because I appreciate Kendrick. After such good (albeit mousy) performances in two very good films, I was expecting her to be in something a little more substantial. But what can she do? She’s only 27, but she can easily pass for 17, so I guess her range is somewhat limited at this point in her career. In the end, you walk away from Pitch Perfect feeling a little “pitch slapped” (sorry, stole that right from their tagline) for having seen such an inconsequential film — but, hey, you laughed for a few minutes at some of the great supporting characters and inane situations. So this film is not a complete loss for filmgoers who have been warned. Mark your calendars! Join us October 19-21 at the Chalfonte Hotel for the 12th Annual Cape May Film Festival. Call or text 609-326-FEST (3378) or email us at capemayfilm@hotmail.com for more information.

The Idiot’s Guide To Social Media
Chamber is hosting a free event at Convention Hall on September 17... local businesses are the target
D
O YOU know the difference between a hash tag (#) and an at symbol (@) in the world of Twitter? Could you point out your profile picture from your cover photo on Facebook? Are you a local business owner who has answered no to the first two questions and wants help now? Then join the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May, along with Constant Contact, on September 17 for Social Media Day in Cape May. This free event is being held at Cape May Convention Hall for local business owners who want to improve their understanding of popular social media sites. Constant Contact, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest are the four social media sites that will be discussed on Social Media Day. When asked about the importance of sites such as these, John Cooke, the President of the Chamber of Commerce, told a story of a local travel writer visiting Cape May. During her visit, this woman tweeted constantly about the goings-on around town. In an effort to show their hospitality, locals sent dozens of tweets back to her, welcoming her to town.
John Cooke, of Greater Cape May Chamber of Commerce, with his constant companion
This example shows the significance of social media today, and why everyone should be knowledgeable on the topic. The event will feature four free programs on social media. The Power of E-mail Marketing begins at 9am and focuses on “Why Your E-mail Doesn’t Get Opened”. At 10:45, Social Media Marketing Made Simple will discuss how small business owners can increase sales and referrals by using social media, while still maintaining that special relationship with customers. The third seminar, Engagement Marketing, will begin at 1:30pm — at this, participants will learn how to attract new customers and obtain positive reviews using social media. The day will end with a special hands-on workshop at 3:15pm, featuring the hosts, Constant Contact. Participants will be schooled in how to upload a mailing list, design a newsletter, upload and edit pictures, and more. A laptop is required for this workshop, so make sure you have yours handy! For more information, call the chamber of commerce on (609) 884-5508 or email info@capemaycahmber.com
17 th ANNUAL DAVID C. DOUGLASS, SR. Golf Tournament & Scholarship Fund Raiser Day Sunday, September 30, 2012
8am until 6pm Avalon Golf Club & Menz Restaurant • Music By Bare Bonz This event is in memory of Officer Douglass, killed in the line of duty while protecting our community February, 18, 1994. Please let me take just a moment to tell you about Officer Douglass. He had been employed with the Lower Township Police Department, was a volunteer firefighter, a member of the S.W.A.T. Team, worked with the K-9 Units, was a firearms instructor and active in many of our local organizations. David was a remarkable man who thought nothing of taking the time to help his friends, neighbors and local children with anything that they needed. David was dispatched to a call of smoke in our local area of North Cape May on the evening of February 18, 1994. Upon arriving at the scene, he witnessed a man running from the property. He was pursuing the subject on foot, when sadly David was fired upon by the subject. David died that evening brutally and senselessly leaving behind his wife, Debbie and three children, David Jr., Cortney and Tina. We shall never forget David or the sacrifice he made for our safety. Please join us in giving back to the community in Dave’s honor. We are pleased to announce that year to date this program is responsible for over $89,000 in awarded scholarships to local students in the community.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
HAVE decided to re-start the grandest and oldest sporting tradition in these United States of America: the annual Cape May/Wildwood Football match. Keen sports fans among you will recall that the game, which had run continuously from soon after The Mayflower arrived, was banned in 1945 after some high-spirited jackanapes, returning from the European Theater of War, brought their combat experience to the already roughand-ready game, and smuggled a Sherman tank into the field of play. This did win us the match in style (1,054 points to 4, if I remember correctly, and I do, as I had a thousand guineas wagered on the outcome being rather one-sided, at odds of 200:1. I funded the West Wing of the D’Catur Mansion with that little windfall), but at the “cost” (I use the term with a little acknowledgment of guilt, but not much) of a score of the more aggressive Wildwood linebackers who thought to storm the tank (“The Colonel Sawyer”, to my mild disgust). Anyways, when the figurative dust and literal gore had settled, we thought it best to
postone the next fixture until some time in the 21st century, when memories had hopefully dulled. We were assisted forcibly in this decision by the FBI, police and General George Patten, who always attended the match, and simply adored the 1945 one, but took a shell splinter through his left ear and decided that enough was enough (in the event that injury prevented him from being as forceful as he had intended in persuading the president to nuke Moscow, so in a way you can thank Cape May for preserving that glorious city, its architecture and

people. Also, you can thank us for Uncle Joe Stalin’s continued survival and rise to the blood-soaked monstrosity he became, and the many millions of people he murdered. Still, it’s an ill wind, eh?) Anyways, the end of the match spelled — in my unhumble opinion — the end of competitive sport in this continent. The modern football game contains a handful of players, with scarce more physical contact than a gentle kiss. And I feel this great nation needs a restoration of national pride, and nothing else will do but to restart the Match this coming season. We are seeking starting teams of 500 per city, and special teams numbering no more than 1,000 bodies (including specialists in hand to hand combat, bridge-building and munitions), and our goal line will be Congress Hall’s lawn, and theirs the start of the pier. Trials start this Saturday on the D’Catur Mansion lawn: uniform is bikini briefs and coconut oil for the ladies, and bikini briefs and coconut oil for the gentleman. Unless you are corpulent, in which case a greatcoat will be ideal. And no oil.

The Cape May Crossword
None of the generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for Exit Zero! By Terry O’Brien SO YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to our themed issue, which is football. ACROSS 1. He was a disgraced Heisman Trophy winner and a former Kardashian boytoy. In college at the University of South Carolina, where he studied political science, he was called “Mr President” by his teammates. 4. He is the Running Back also known as “Sweetness.” He’s also a jazz-rock musician. 5. He’s the Florida Gator-turned-actor, who made quite a deliverance in The Longest Yard, the film starring Adam Sandler in which prison inmates challenge the guards to a football game. 6. This is the team with the most Super Bowl titles (six). This was also the first team to hire an African-American as an assistant coach. 10. H e’s the controversial (some would say loony) director of Any Given Sunday, the 1999 flick starring Al Pacino and Cameron Diaz. 13. He made the “immaculate reception.” 16. Should he stay, or should he go? This famed quarterback completed the longest retirement tour in NFL history. 17. It’s the movie every guy in America has cried while watching. If he says he hasn’t,
Remember this guy? The anti-Peyton. 20 Down.
he’s lying. 18. Some question his Mannliness. 21. Ocho Cinco before he was Ocho Cinco. 23. He’s the most recent member of the 63yard field goal club. 24. H e’s the 1989 Eagles back-up quarter back who led the 1985 Bears “Super Bowl Shuffle.” DOWN 2. Nicknamed Big Ben, this Pittsburgh Steeler nearly died in a 2006 motorcylce accident. 3. “America’s Team,” or “Most Hated Team on Planet Earth”? (Hint: In 1999, Troy Aikman won eight games for this team, making him the winningest starting quarterback of any decade, with 90 wins in the 1990s.) 7. He’s the all-time rushing leader AND Dancing With The Stars Champion. 8. This was 2012’s toughest defense (in what some folks would regard as the USA’s gayest city). 9. He’s the SPCA’s Most Wanted, and his
autobiography Finally Free was recently released. 11. The 1987 Eagles “Ultimate Weapon,” according to Sports Illustrated magazine. Now, he produces a Christian rock group called Humility. 12. He is Team Obliterator. And boy, is he obnoxious. 14. He still denies murdering his wife and her lover. And his glove didn’t fit quite right. 15. He is the “Minister of Defense.” 19. This two-sport star played for the Oakland Raiders AND baseball’s Kansas City Royals. 20. He was the number two pick in 1998 NFL draft, and let’s just say he wasn’t quite as successful as the number one pick, Peyton Manning. Or we could just say he was one of the biggest busts in NFL history. 22. Oldest rivalry in the NFL is the Bears versus this team.

What’s Your Story?
Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? What’s your name and where are you from? I’m Jim Kenny, and I’ve lived in North Cape May since 1992. I used to work at the post office, but I’m retired now. What were you doing when we interrupted you? I walk every day, two miles, here on the promenade. Do you have any plans for later? Hmm, I will probably go for two lite beers at the Cape May VFW. How was you summer? It was a quiet season... a little bit too hot and humid for me and full of mosquitoes! It’s Exit Zero’s football issue? Are you a fan? Sure, I like football. I’m a Philadelphia fan. Go Eagles! Interview by Gabi Urda PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I am a very confident guy — some might say overly confident, even. I can walk into any bar or restaurant in Cape May and someone there will know me by name. I’m smart, good-looking, and have a great sense of humor. Recently I overheard someone I know — who’s always friendly and pats me on the back when I see him — call me a not-very-nice name, not realizing that I could hear him. He’s probably just jealous, but I was really surprised. Should I say something to him? — Shocked Dear Shocked What, pray tell, would you say to him? “No, really — I’m not a (fill in the bad word here)”? Maybe he is an idiot, and cannot tell a supremely confident, funny, smart, goodlooking man from a hole in the ground. Maybe he IS jealous, not to mention so insecure that
he smiles and pats everyone on the back and then says nasty things about them when they’re out of earshot (doesn’t THAT sound exhausting?). Or maybe, you really ARE a (fill in the bad word here). Perhaps you’ll snap out of it. In the meantime, please remember: a little humility goes a long way. Confidence is a beautiful thing to behold, but there is a thin line between “confident” and “obnoxious.” Try to toe that line. If you are smart, goodlooking and have a great sense of humor, trust the Answer Lady — people can see that. You

do not need to provide narration. (And PS: Cape May is small — lots of people know who lots of other people are here. It doesn’t mean they like them.) Dear Answer Lady My extended family had a reunion in Cape May over Labor Day weekend, and we had a great day on the beach with all of the cousins. There were lots of little kids running around, including my own three-year-old. He is a little headstrong, and we like to let him be himself. So I was a bit annoyed when one of my cousins corrected him for a minor transgression. I am not in the habit of disciplining other people’s children, I don’t like them disciplining mine, and I said so. It put a damper on an otherwise lovely day. Who was in the wrong here? — Cousin Dear Cousin, You may not be in the habit of disciplining other people’s children, but you may want to get into the habit of disciplining your own to save your family members the trouble, especially if he is “headstrong.” “Headstrong” people have a tendency to have to need “rescuing” by “lifeguards.”

APE May isn’t just a beach; it’s so much more than surf and sand. Not sure where to start? You’re in luck: we have assembled a complete guide to Cape May activities. Even locals might find something new. Plus, there are rainy day ideas, marked with a . Enjoy! FAMILY-FRIENDLY Cape May has a great variety of activities that you can enjoy with the entire family. Here is a handy and comprehensive list of ideas to get you started. 1. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive, educational and handson activities, visitors can make a connection with the past by experiencing it. The many authentically restored homes, amid idyllic shaded areas, make it hard to not feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier
when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. There is a themed event every weekend — Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 898-2300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. 2. Tidelands Eco-Tour Board the Osprey to learn about the rich history of Cape May’s waterways, like the creation of Cape Island, the dredging of the harbor, South Cape May, fishing fleets, the various features along the harbor, the Nature Center of Cape May, the Corinthian Yacht Club and more. The Osprey is conveniently located at the Miss Chris Marina. Offered at 10am, 1:30 and 6pm daily, with a 1-hour 4pm harbor cruise every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Adults $23, kids $15, children six and under free. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 3. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a small, quaint seaside town (kind of like this one!), then make sure you check out bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State Park. You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping
at the outlets. No matter what you choose once you’re there, you’ll enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins and whales on your way. They even have a bar onboard! For more information or to book a reservation, call 800-64FERRY or visit www.capemaylewesferry.com. 4. The First Resort Exhibit The First Resort by author Ben Miller is the basis for this exhibit sponsored by the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) at the Carriage House Gallery at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street. “Cape May’s 20th Century Renaissance: From the Pages of The First Resort” brings to life the key turning point in Cape May’s 20th century history. Visitors to the exhibit will be treated to rare photographs, video and a multitude of artifacts showcasing the years immediately before and after the city’s Urban Renewal movement. The exhibit will be open daily through November 4 and admission is free. Gallery hours vary. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit capemaymac.org. 5. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off
Page 86 Cape May, but it’s still a big thrill to see these beautiful creatures. Cape May Whale & Dolphin Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. And, as the name implies, you might even see a whale. Tours take off from Wilson Avenue. If the ship is docked you can see it on your left as you cross the small bridge before the Lobster House on your way out of town. For directions or more information, call (609) 8980055 or visit them on the web at www.capemaywhalewatch.com. 6. Historic Haunts House Tour Get into the Victorian spirit on a guided tour of the historic (and some say haunted) Physick Estate, and learn about the Victorians’ fascination with spiritualism, as well as today’s modern ‘“ghost-hunting” methods. Visit them between 10am and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays and see how alpaca fiber is spun into yarn, or shop at their store which carries many alpaca-related items (forget wool: go with an alpaca sweater this winter!) And don’t forget to greet the grazing alpacas – they make it all possible. Call (609) 884-0563 or visit www.bayspringsalpacas.comfor more information. 12. 8/6: A Very Special Cape May Birthday On The Promenade
Four of my best friends celebrated the same big birthday recently... We’ll say it was our 21st. As a gift, I purchased a bench on the promenade with all of our names on it. We had champagne there at 5pm, and then we had dinner at Harry’s across the street because we didn’t want to venture to far from our birthday bench! It was such a special celebration. — ELOISE BOCCELLA, OWNER OF ITALIAN GARDEN

Activity Of The Week
A
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Visit Historic Cold Spring Village.
CAPE May vacation takes you back in time to the Victorian era, but if you’re a more adventurous time traveler, you’ll want to go even further back. Take a trip to Historic Cold Spring Village this weekend, the last regular weekend of the season. Queen Victoria reigned over the United Kingdom from 1837 to 1876. At Historic Cold Spring Village (HCSV), you can get a taste of life in the homespun era, before Victoria was even born. HCSV is an open-air living history museum located three miles north of Cape May, on Route 9. Twentysix restored buildings have been relocated to the site, and visitors stroll from farm to pottery to printing press to school as if they are ordinary Americans living from 1789 to 1804. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for children, and a visit usually takes at least three hours — longer if you stay for ice cream, a treat from the bakery, or lunch at the Old Grange Restaurant. Budget extra time to shop in the General Store, while the kids play period games on the lawn outside.
The Blacksmith Shop at Historic Cold Spring Village was built circa 1886 You can also shop the online store when you get home, which is handy if you’re shopping for presents. This weekend, HCSV expands its time period for the Civil War Weekend, when Union and Confederate troops move in. This popular event includes demonstrations on field hospitals, mounted cavalry, and weaponry. The education doesn’t stop there. After the season, schoolchildren can
come to the village for field trips — they can use the Marshallville School to recreate a “School Day from the Past” — or HCSV comes to them, in person or through the use of modern technology like Skype. And, throughout the autumn, there will be special events in the village — the Pumpkin Festival on October 20, the Candlelight Walk on November 3, and Wassail Day on December 1. HCSV also offers a chance to look at the natural habitat settlers would have found when America was new, with the Nature Trail at Bradner’s Run. The Nature Trail is free and open to the public for self-guided tours, beginning at the edge of the village’s Seashore Road parking lot. Visitors can see native trees as they change color in the fall — Sweet Gum, Tulip Poplar, pines, and oaks are home to birds and other wildlife. Thanks to the Boy Scouts, the trail is clean and ready to stroll, and there are 15 stations pointing out areas of interest along the way. For more information, check out the website at hcsv. org or call (609) 898-2300. Next week: Dragon Boat Races

MR PICKLES is a three-year-old Maltese/Poodle. He’s a low-energy boy who wants to be social, but he tends to be a little anxious and a little nippy if he feels unsure with a person. He does like being pet and will want to climb up on your lap (if he’s allowed!) or to sit next to you. Mr. Pickles can go to a home with dogs and cats but not with young children or teens. The adoption fee is $95.
«
MANNING is a pretty nervous guy at first, but what a friend he will be. He’s excitable, and will get a bit mouthy when wound up, but with a little training, he could be a great boy! If you have other dogs, Manning will likely get along with them... but he’s absolutely terrified of cats (how cute!), and he’ll need a home without smaller kids, because he’s so excitable. The adoption fee is only $95.

CARAMEL is a uniquely beautiful Pit Bull mix, who is approximately 10-months old as of August 2012. This gentle yet playful girl came to the shelter as a stray and was found with another dog. Caramel is currently medium in size but is expected to grow a bit more which will take her into the low end of large. She has cool looking long ears that stand up, and she loves swimming and affection! The adoption fee is $95.

STREAMER is a very sweet younger girl that really loves attention and being pet! Her owner recently relocted to a nursing home, and no one else could care for Steamer, so she was taken into the shelter, where she’s having trouble adjusting. She misses having a home of her own. She is up to date on vaccines. The adoption fee is $35.

JUNE is an energetic, lovable girl who loves to play. She grew up at the shelter before going to a home with her sisters... but it turned out that multiple cats was just too much for her new owners to handle. June grew up with, and lived with other cats... so she’d be great with others, and she’s up to date on all vaccines. The adoption fee is $35.

Much To Come At Cape May Stage ADVERTISING FEATURE
D
O YOU feel the buzz in the air? It’s another opening night at Cape May Stage! This season has been filled with the compelling theatre you’ve grown to know and love from Cape May Stage, and this production is no different. Time Stands Still is a thought-provoking drama, ripped from today’s headlines. It tells the story of Sarah and James, a photojournalist and a foreign correspondent trying to find happiness in a world gone sadly awry. Theirs is a partnership based on telling the toughest of stories, but when their own narrative takes an unexpected turn, the adventurous couple confronts the prospect of a more conventional life. This moving new play will prompt poignant questions about the nature of responsibility — to ourselves, to our loved ones, to our community, and to our world. Running Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 3 through October 13th, this is a production you’ll be telling your friends about for weeks to come! Don’t miss Coffee and Conversation: “How Real Life News Informs Artistic Choices”, September 21 from 5-6:30. Made possible by PNC Arts Alive, this is your chance to tour behind-the-scenes of Time Stands Still and discuss the issues raised by this timely show. With complimentary refreshments, this pre-show discussion with Artistic Director Roy Steinberg explores the idea of entertainment being “ripped from the headlines”. Free for all ages, Coffee and Conversation is also your chance to purchase a “Meet Your Seat” discount Family
Directed by Roy Steinberg, Time Stands Still “is deceptively modest, consisting of a handful of conversations among just four characters, the range of feeling it explores is wide and deep,” said The New York Times. Pass for Time Stands Still. On September 21, you and four family members can purchase the Family Pass to see this stimulating production for the low price of $25 on the designated PNC performance, October 7 at 3pm. These passes are only available for purchase at the Coffee and Conversation event and are only redeemable on October 7, so don’t miss it. Is money tight? Mark your calendar for September 30th — it’s our Pay What You Can matinee. Sponsored by the Southern Shore Regional Destination Marketing Organization, you decide the admission price! Bird Droppings
I
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
F you are reading this piece, I’m sorry. Dreadfully sorry. It means you are too early. Early for what? For the absolute peak of autumn bird migration and the annual event that celebrates it. THE Bird Show. The week New Jersey Audubon comes to town. October 26 through 28. A three day bird extravaganza, sponsored by New Jersey’s natural history ambassadors, featuring field trips and programs and celebrated speakers and vendors and birds, birds, Birds, BIRDS, BIRDS, BIRDS!!! With a special focus this year, on hawks, hawks, Hawks, HAWKS, HAWKS, HAWKS!!! At long last, the second edition of Hawks in Flight is being released. This Halloween Weekend you can raise glasses with the authors David Sibley, Clay Sutton, and that other guy under the raptor filled skies that inspired the book. Or, if you like your hawks up close and personal, you can go to the Cape May Convention Hall and see Jonathan Wood’s line-up of live birds of prey including
hawks, eagles, and owls. Have you ever been so close enough to a Barn Owl that you can smell mouse on its breath? Of course, you can skip the raptor show and buy the Cliff Notes (ie, Hawks in Flight) and get it signed by the authors. Lots of authors, actually, and lots of titles. Kevin Karlson who co-authored The Shorebird Guide, and wrote and photographed Birds
of Cape May and Visions: Earth’s Elements in Bird and Nature Photography. There’s Clay and Pat Sutton, authors of far too many books to list but their most recent, Birds and Birding at Cape May, Bill Boyle, author of Birds of New Jersey, Michael O’Brien another co-author of The Shorebird Guide and John Kricher from Massachusetts and another author with too numerous to mention titles including The New Neotropical Companion. And these are just the authors we know about. But, you are right. Why bury your face in a book when you are standing in (gasp, sigh) Cape May — The “raptor capital of North America,” and it is the peak of fall migration. It’s common to tally more than 200 species of birds during the Autumn Bird Festival, including 16 different birds of prey. On one memorable weekend, a f light of 1.5 million American Robins darkened the sky. On another, 100,000 migrating sea ducks sped down the coast. Then

GET TO THE OTHER SIDE.
No matter which half of the Twin Capes you’re on, there’s always more to see and explore waiting on the other side. And there’s no better way to get there than the Cape May–Lewes Ferry. From the waterparks in Delaware, to Victorian architecture in Cape May, if you aren’t visiting both sides of the Twin Capes, you’re missing half the fun.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 111 there was the year over 1,000 Great Blue Herons festooned the roofs and chimneys of houses in town. And those great migratory fallouts that have fallen on Autumn Festivals past, involving millions upon millions upon millions of migrants, are emblazoned in the minds of past participants. “But,” (you may be thinking) “I thought that September was the ‘peak of fall migration’ in Cape May.” Yep. Used to be. Back in the 50s and 60s. But bird populations changed; migratory patterns shifted. In the mid-90s New Jersey Audubon changed its festival from the end of September to the end of October. Now weekend participants can expect more birds of more species and... The weather is mild, temperatures tempered by the warm waters off the bay.And the tourist season is largely over. Rates are down. So you’re too early. That’s the bad news. The good news is that being early is much better than being late. There’s lots of time to register for the Cape May Autumn Birding Festival and catch the wave of southbound migrants. This means that
At long last, The second edition of Hawks in Flight, co-authored by our, is being released you’ll have to come back to Cape May in just a few short weeks but... What kind of hardship is that? An off-season f ling in Cape May, NJ. Off season for tourists, that is. Prime time for birds, birding and a discoveryfilled weekend with New Jersey Audubon.
And if you aren’t that keen into the whole birding festival thing, it’s worth the price of the $5 admission to Cape May Convention Hall to see the array of artisans and crafters, tour companies for that far-away adventure, not to mention (which I already did) Jonathan Wood and his Extreme Raptors show being held throughout the course of the weekend To learn more about the Cape May Bird Observatory, just stop by. CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive (609-8842736), and is open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm. You can also join Pete for his Monday morning walk at the South Cape May Meadows. Just meet by 7:30am in The Nature Conservancy parking lot on Sunset Boulevard. The walk is $10. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times.

8/25: Seafarers’ Weekend At Historic Cold Spring Village
«
Seafarers’ Weekend at Historic Cold Spring Village was a celebration of the rich maritime culture and history of the Jersey Cape. There was maritime music by the Sea Dogs, decoy carving, face painting, and historical interpreters in period clothing demonstrating the trades, crafts and lifestyles of Early America. But the biggest draw was the Valhalla’s Pirates, who performed fight scenes for the crowd, according to the Village’s Deputy Director of Public Relations and Programming, Kate Devaney. “The kids loved it,” she said. “They cheered and clapped. One little boy said, ‘I could watch this all day.’” And no, no one was scared by how life-like it all was. “Any time they set off a cannon,” Kate told us, “they alerted the crowd by yelling: ‘Fire in the hole!’” And the most important thing? “Kids were learning without even knowing it,” Kate said. “That’s a lot of what we do here at Historic Cold Spring Village.”
