I’m not much of a runner, but I cheered for my wife Diane and her friend during the beachfront race. We came all the way from Egg Harbor. Neither of them won, but they met their time goals. Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Linda McAlpin of Havertown, Pennsylvania. How long have you been coming to Cape May? Since 1978. Who are you normally with? My husband. Favorite thing about Cape May? Watching the different personalities of the ocean from our condo’s balcony. Sometimes, we call it Lake Atlantic. Somedays, we watch the surfers riding waves in their black suits. Least favorite thing? It just showed up in the magazine last week! The intersection of Park Boulevard and Perry Street needs to be safer. Favorite restaurants? Oyster Bay, Lobster House, Tisha’s... I might as well just say “See page 35.” Favorite place to stay? Regent Beach Condos. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? There needs to be more four way stops on the back streets. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? Keeping up with what’s happening in Cape May! Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? When the US Post Office is inconsistent with getting it to us on time. What’s your T-shirt size? Large, please!

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Diane Stopyra. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Quotes Of The Week

Random Factoid

“Beer. Now there’s a temporary solution.” — Dan Castellaneta “Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder. — Kinky Friedman “A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it’s better to be thoroughly sure.” — A Czech Proverb

BEER in English pubs is ordered by pints and quarts... So in old England, if a customers got a little out of hand, the bartender would yell at him: “Mind your pints and quarts,” a signal it was time to settle down. The expressions “Mind your Ps and Qs” evolved out of this.

Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... The Cure IT WAS a bartender in Washington DC, Gina Chersevani, who developed this beer cocktail as a “cure” (or at least a consolation) for the economic recession. It sells for only $5 on the menu at PS 7s restaurant in DC, and we think it would make a pretty great addition to one of Cape May’s cocktail menus as well.

Ingredients: 2 cups ice cubes 1 oz Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur 5 oz light lager, such as Miller High Life 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice 5 (1-inch) pieces peeled fresh ginger cut into thin matchsticks FILL a 12 oz cooler (or highball) glass with ice cubes. Add ginger liqueur, beer, and lemon juice and stir. Garnish with ginger sticks.

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

Dog Days In Cape May LAST month, we posted a picture on our Facebook page of one of the Exit Zero puppies, April, in all her glory… it was taken right after she’d finished digging a hole in the sand at Higbee’s Beach. We weren’t thinking it would garner more interest than any other Facebook photo, but 341 “likes” later, we realized just how in love with cute canines you all are. And yet, for such a “dog-friendly” city, Cape May isn’t a puppy’s paradise. The beach is arguably the best doggie playground on the planet, but in Cape May, pups aren’t allowed to set foot, or paw, on the main beach between the months of April and October, according to Ordinance 218-2010. And before this was passed, dogs weren’t allowed on… ever. We called Linda Steenrod, owner of the dog-friendly Billmae Cottage, member of the Cape May Dog Friendly Association, and one of the people who helped secure the dog park on Lafayette Street in 2008. The motivation? “There is no grassy area where it’s okay to bring your dog,” she told us. And very few sandy areas, too. We think it’s great how members of the community have come together to make this park a success. Linda used to buy bottles of water and leave them for other dog owners to use. Others donated pet dishes. Members of the Dog Friendly Association decorated with plastic hearts at Valentine’s Day and streamers on the Fourth of July. But the most impressive thing about the park is that it “polices itself,” according to Linda… you see, it’s mostly dog owners who take issue with folks not cleaning up after their pets. “I’m not

very subtle,” Linda told us. “If I see it happening, I’ll say, ‘Do you need a bag to clean that up, because I have one for you.’” Which is likely part of the reason Chief of Police Diane Sorantino told us complaints about people not following the rules about disposing of waste (as well as the rules about time restrictions and leashing dogs) are “not something we handle a lot of.” In fact, she said, “I can’t remember the last time someone officially complained.” To be fair, of the 37 comments we received on our picture of April, one of them was an unhappy post about our having had a dog (even an absurdly cute one) on the beach, so there ARE naysayers out there. But here’s the thing… why should the people who don’t want dogs on the beach be the ones who have the last say? What about all the people who DO? Surely, we can reach some type of compromise here. We called the Borough of Stone Harbor, because we’d heard they’ve reached just such a compromise. Deputy Clerk Lisa Stefankiewicz told us that, at the urging of a group of dog-owning citizens back in 2008, the city designated three blocks of beach “dog friendly” during the summer months from 9am to sunrise and from 7pm to sunset. Eventually, they decided it would be better to allow dogs on every beach instead, but only after 7pm, and that’s the way it’s been for the last two seasons. “We haven’t heard any complaints whatsoever,” Lisa told us. To ensure dog owners have access to the proper “waste disposal device,” that is a poop pouch, the Stone Harbor has installed bag-dispensing machines. We called one of the members of Stone Harbor’s Public Works Department, who told us that the

machines are, in fact, easy to miss, which is always a concern in Cape May. “They look like little hand-wipe dispensers,” he told us. Sheila Williams, who was tasked with finding adequate bag dispensers for Cape May’s dog park, directed us to a Texas-based company, Great American, that would be a good fit for outfitting Cape May’s beaches. We called, and Cape May can purchase 15 of their Paw Pal dispensers — the most expensive “deluxe” model, no less — for a meager $56.85. So why not increase the amount of time and months that dogs are allowed on the beach? Even if it’s only on a section of the beach. “This can be done by sectioning off a space with dune or snow fencing, so it’s easily removable,” Linda Steenrod explained, which sounds reasonable to us. And while we’re at it, why not increase the penalties for breaking the rules, to pacify those who might be concerned? Right now, the maximum penalty for violating any of the dog-related laws is a fine not to exceed $1,250, or community service not to exceed ninety days. We’re willing to bet the city wouldn’t receive any complaints about amping this up, because we’re also willing to bet that most dog owners in Cape May will not break the rules.

The Music Makers CAPE May has a reputation as an older, quiet shore town, especially during the off-season. But those who write us off as a sleepy little seaside spot are missing another truth — there is a group of young (and young-minded) folks here who, at this

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 very moment, are bringing fresh energy, more culture, and new ideas to Cape Island. We’ve profiled some of them in these pages: There’s Honnah Riccio, who left a fast-paced life in Manhattan to work the produce stand at Beach Plum Farm because she’s passionate about bringing organic food to Cape May. Gina Peterson, who saw a gaping culinary hole here and decided to open her own mobile gourmet creperie. The boys behind the Cape May Brewery, who started out with nothing but makeshift equipment and are somehow turning Cape May into a destination for beer aficionados. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Now we’d like to add the folks behind the International Exit 0 Jazz Fest to the list of driven people doing cool things for our “sleepy” little town. We went to the festival’s launch party last Wednesday, and left feeling totally reenergized. “It was an incredibly great vibe, just great energy,” said Michael Kline, festival organizer, who used to produce live broadcasts for a community radio station in New Orleans during the famous New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, so he knows great energy. And what made it this way? “Everyone from the community came together,” he told us. Came together, indeed.

The party was held on the Congress Hall veranda, but the hotel allowed YB, the Mad Batter, Louisa’s Chocolate Bar, and Empanada Mama’s to bring in the food. And all of this teamwork seemed to have an effect on the crowd. We overheard a conversation between Sue Lotozo of Flying Fish and Deanna Ebner of the Red Store, two women who had just formally met, brainstorming new T-shirt designs for Sue’s shop. We overheard Fran Wilson, of the West End Garage, throwing around ideas for new beers with Ryan Krill of Cape May Brewery (the same brewery that came to the rescue when Congress Hall’s keg stopped working mid-party). And we found ourselves tossing around ideas for this peppy periodical with enthusiastic readers over glasses of free wine and swordfish tacos. (You might have missed these delicious tacos if you didn’t arrive early enough… all 250 were gobbled up quickly, according to one of the festival’s producers Eliza Lotozo.) Then there was the band, the UCC Royal Brass Band comprised of — get this — Camden city high schoolers. “The band contributed so much to the great energy of the party,” Eliza told us. “What’s really neat is to see how jazz is still affecting young kids.” And affecting so much of the Cape May community, too, because even if you’re not into music, you’re going to want to be a part of this. The weekend of November 9-11,

musicians from Chile, Brazil, New York, Puerto Rico, New Orleans, and Venezuela will gather in our “sleepy” little town, to put on a world-class show. We’re looking forward to experiencing the vibe of it all, and we hope to see you out doing the same. For more information, check out exitzerojazzfest.com.

Secrets Of The Stage

THERE has been a lot of buzz about the newest show at Cape May Stage, Time Stands Still. The cast of four is all-star; their collective pedigree includes work on Broadway, As The World Turns, even Baywatch. And the writer, Donald Margulies, is a Pulitzer Prize winner. Throw in the dramatic injury — a fractured shoulder — experienced by one bodysurfing cast member just a week before opening, as well as the mad-scramble to find his Emmynominated replacement, Jon Lindstrom, and yea… a lot of buzz. But what you read in the papers is the stuff everyone reads. The scoop everyone’s getting. If you want a true insider’s look at life behind the curtain, you’d do well to attend one of the Coffee and Conversation events hosted at Cape May Stage’s Robert Shackleton Playhouse. We attended last Thursday (along with 25 others) because the topic — how real life events impact artis-

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 tic choices — was especially appealing to us as journalists. As were the homemade fudge brownies. For those who hadn’t yet seen it, Artistic Director Roy Steinberg — joined on stage by the entire cast — gave a run-down of the play, which tells the story of Sarah (played by Princeton-educated triathlete Sandy York). Sarah is a photojournalist injured while covering the Iraq war. Back in their Brooklyn apartment, she and her boyfriend James (Lindstrom) are “confronted with the idea of a more conventional life” once Sarah’s ex-lover/boss/best friend (Jonathan Brody) turns up with his new, much younger girlfriend Mandy (Maggie McDowell.) We’re a little biased, but we especially like all the shout-outs given to “heroic” journalists during this chat with the cast. “Reporting is inherently aggressive,” Sandy said. (Hear that, folks? Writing about the delicious baked goods served at these shindigs is trying.) Sandy and the others may not be journalists themselves but, in preparing for these roles, they did immerse themselves in Iraq war-related documentaries and newspaper clippings. “That’s part of the

artists’ process you’d never get to see otherwise,” Roy told us when we called him later to ask what makes a Coffee and Conversation event so intimate. We also heard a little bit about the rehearsal process in general... like, how are you supposed to fake being in love with someone you can’t stand, if a role requires it? “I give myself an acting exercise,” Roy told the audience. “I find something I can play. I might tell myself I’m in love with cotton, and so I become enamored with the cotton shirt she’s wearing.” Our favorite part was the Q&A from audience members who weren’t afraid to

put the cast in the hot seat. “I’ve heard many Oscar winners are egotistical asses,” said one gentleman after the actors had finished talking about how well they all get along, “so I don’t understand what personality has to do with good acting.” Then there was the man who took issue with the amount of profanity in the play… would these professionals really speak this way? “I think these characters love to curse,” Sandy responded. “This is New Jersey, after all.” (We’re happy to hear Roy didn’t take the advice of the theater-goer who suggested, after watching a previous Cape May Stage show, that each F bomb be replaced with the phrase “Oh, fudge bucket.”) We haven’t seen the show yet, but we’re looking forward to it. We heard some ringing endorsements from the Coffee and Conversation attendees. “It’s the best play yet,” according to Dani and Roger Barnsby of Cape May. “Everything just comes together.” For more information about this show, or upcoming Coffee and Conversation events, call 609-884-1341.

The subject of weather forecasting has been bothering us for a while. We rely on good weather to draw the tourists, so we don’t take kindly to forecasts that say “Isolated Thunderstorms” when we know that what the forecaster means is, “It’s gonna be sunny, but we’re covering our butts.” What really confuses is the forecast which says “Showers”, along with the words, and we quote, “Chance of rain: 30%”. Truly, it’s always sunny in Cool Cape May.

The Inside Scoop On City Hall

A user’s guide to Cape May City Council meetings... by Diane Stopyra

L

AST Tuesday’s city council meeting was not quite as stormy as the weather. What was UP with that monsoon? Not that we let ourselves get distracted by the rain coming down on the skylights in the city hall auditorium when we should have been paying attention to very important business or anything. Really, we didn’t. Now, where were we again? Oh yes, the city council meeting… 7:02: Your reporter enters the auditorium just in time for the pre-meeting banter. She eavesdrops, er, overhears a story Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman — looking sunny in a yellow polo shirt — is telling to the rest of council. She can’t tell what it’s about, exactly, but it does involve the phrase “Know your role.” 7:03: Upon seeing Press of Atlantic City reporter, Rich Degener, Mayor Ed Mahaney — in a pale gray jacket and baby blue button-up with maroon patterned tie — says: “It must be a slow night in the news if you’re here, Rich.” Oh, you jokester, you. 7:06: Mayor Mahaney thumps his gavel,

and City Clerk Louise Cummiskey — in a pair of classic gray slacks and a sweater — takes the roll. Council member Bill Murray is absent, tsk, tsk. 7:07: The first order of business is an ordinance — 256 — that’s up for second reading and adoption. It would adjust the city’s recycling program — single stream is in, folks, beginning on or about January or February of 2013, that is. Meaning? You can recycle more stuff, and all in one place. “This is a major improvement going forward,” the mayor says. Your reporter agrees. With Mahaney. Shock-

ing, we know. 7:12: It’s time for resolutions. “We have a light night on this tonight, thank goodness,” Wichterman says. Here are the ones we like the most: Resolution 224 will, Wichterman explains, allow the city to utilize some of the county’s equipment. He can’t say which equipment, though, because “the county was supposed to send us Exhibit A, and they didn’t bother to send us Exhibit A. We tried to get the list, but it’s not available now, apparently. It will be a surprise which we can use and which we can’t!” The mayor interjects that the mysterious equipment in question will likely be from homeland security for use in, say, a big storm. 225 is for the refund of overpaid 2012 taxes. 228 is a resolution for the final(!) changeorder for Ogren construction for the new convention hall. 229 is for the payment of bills.

230 authorizes a changeorder with Perna Finnegan, Inc. for the 2012 utility and road program. “As the scope of the work changes,” Wichterman says, “we do have a change-order for what they’re going to get paid.” 7:15: Resolutions are adopted! 7:16: Minutes are accepted. Reports are received. Your reporter thinks she’ll make it home in time for How I Met Your Mother. 7:17: It’s time for unfinished business from City Manager Bruce MacLeod, who’s looking very monochromatic this evening in varying shades of brown. “On September 12,” he says, “the city received bids for the purpose of doing work on the north side of Cape May Avenue, from Madison through Reading Avenue.” The six bids range from $470,820 to $636,597.50. Your reporter calculates that the latter amount could buy you 49,158 Exit Zero coffee cup. “We’ll consider an award at the October 2 meeting,” MacLeod says. MacLeod also mentions upcoming events, including the 29th Annual Beachfront Run on September 22 which, by the time you read this, your reporter will have run. Without passing out on the promenade, hopefully. Also on that date at Convention Hall is the Fred Hall Orchestra and then, on September 29, the Oktoberfest and “Convention Hall’s first wedding.” Your reporter pictures Convention Hall in a wedding gown. MacLeod then mentions the successful all-day Social Media seminar involving 200 attendees at Convention Hall. Here, we’ll give a shout-out to event organizer, Chamber president, and Internet guru John Cooke. Go, John! Then there’s the first Dragon Boat race taking place on the Harbor on the 14th, and the 66th annual birding festival taking place October 26 and 28.

7:20: Council member Deanna Fiocca, wearing a royal purple top under a black sweater and black pants, tells a story that makes us both angry and sad. Fair warning: if you care about puppies, you’re not going to like the rest of this paragraph. “On September 12,” Fiocca says, “we had a resident who lost a dog because it was attacked by another dog, and there are extenuating circumstances here that need to be addressed.” The attacked animal had been chained and repeatedly left in a yard unattended and for such long stretches of time, it would manage to get itself tangled in its own chain. This day, a passerby saw the puppy struggling, and tied her own dog up in order to assist. But her dog got lose, and went after the tangled pup, who sustained fatal injuries. Fiocca says it’s important to look into “how we can either enhance our laws or resolve and reaffirm that if you live in the city of Cape May, you will abide by laws that deal with animal cruelty.” Hell, yes. 7:22: City Attorney Tony Monzo (who is wearing another dapper, dark suit… just ONCE we’d like to see him looking a little less put together, dammit) says that the state statute has a comprehensive law dealing with animal cruelty, and that it “lists several items which would constitute a violation here.” It’s possible this preempts the ability of a municipality to adopt legislation that’s already dealt with on a state level, “especially in light of the complex and comprehensive statuary sections dealing with animal cruelty.” MacLeod says Code Enforcement and Animal Control Officer John Queenan is inves-

THE WASHINGTON INN | 801 WASHINGTON STREET, CAPE MAY (609) 884-5697 | WASHINGTONINN.COM

The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 28 issue further, and report back in time for the November meeting. 7:28: Wichterman thanks MacLeod for working toward the erection of yield to pedestrian signs at the Wawa. “That place is a zoo in the morning,” he says, “I’m hoping the county acquiesces and goes along with you on that.” At the mention of the word “Wawa,” your reporter wants an Italian hoagie. Secondly, Wichterman says, he’s initiated a meeting with nine New Jersey mayors who have the same regional school funding problem Cape May has — sending very few kids to school, and paying very high taxes to support that school. “We’ll do what we can to make this more palatable.” Finally, Wichterman asks Monzo what can be done if, as he’s heard, Stewart’s Root Beer is still operating, despite having had their mercantile license revoked on September 17. “I don’t believe we should have a discussion in open session about some of the legal issues pertaining to that,” he responds, because the city has been assigned counsel. “The clerk is, I believe, addressing the situation. All I can tell you is that typically under the ordinances violations that continue day to day are treated as separate and distinctviolations.” 7:34: The mayor points out that on October 11 the city will sponsor the South Jersey Gas Conference. “Cape May has worked with Sustainable Jersey and with South Jersey Industries to do energy audits to find out where we’re not being as efficient as possible in terms of energy usage,” he says, “and then .. based on that audit, making improvements in our system. South Jersey Industries wants to reach out and do this with small businesses in the Cape May community.” He also thanks everyone who supported the Philadelphia Boys Choir while they were here. 7:39: It’s time for the public portion! Victorian Towers

resident George Costich, who’s wearing denim shorts, a plaid short-sleeve shirt, beige loafers, and thick black suspenders, says he would like to film performances at Convention Hall, so that the performers might later use the film to improve their act. Mahaney says he’ll set up a meeting with Mr Costich about this. 7:43: Jules Rauch, a New York Avenue resident, takes the podium. He says “the area of joining property lines between New Jersey and New York Avenues” are in danger of fire, because the electric lines here often spark. The trees here have caught on fire before. “It’s almost annual now,” he says. Yikes! Mahaney says that the electric company is aware of that situation, that it needs to be addressed, and that the city will look into it. (Exit Zero is, coincidentally, looking into this as well, so stay tuned!) 7:46: Perry Street resident CJ Ryan, wearing board shorts and a T-shirt, says that last year was the first year he can remember parking being allowed on his street during the West Cape May Christmas Parade, and that it’s a concern because of all the children who run out to retrieve candy here. (And probably because of all the adults who do the same… don’t deny it; we saw you last year.) “We’re located after the judges stand,” he says, “but we still get a decent crowd of kids. I was just hoping maybe that could be addressed.” Mahaney says he has noticed the same thing, as this is where Council goes to give out candy. “It’s a very good point,” he says. Good, indeed. 7:50: Everyone files out and into the rain. Your reporter discusses with reporters from the Cape May County Herald and The Press of Atlantic City what kind of whiskey drink we will have to round out the night (a Manhattan for us). Then your reporter stops at the Brown Room for said whiskey. Until next time, happy fall, Cape May.

The Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever

Y

OU wanna see something really scary? I write to you this week from the Morey’s Piers employee training room which, for 95% of the year, is a clean, professional space where all new pier employees go through their various orientation classes and where many committee meetings are held. It’s equipped with a fancy computer system from which we do Power Point presentations and review various pier procedures. But today, I am surrounded by hanging racks laden with dozens of zombie costumes, bloody clown outfits, scarecrow ensembles, and various instruments of torture. Because every September the training room transforms magically (and by “magically” I mean “me and a small team”) into the Morey’s FEARS costume and make-up room. Or, as we call it, The Dexter Room (the walls and ceiling are covered in thin plastic, the floor in blue tarps… it’s quite unsettling). Every weekend from October 4-27 this room will look like an old-fashioned movie lot commissary, with zombies sipping coffee with demented clowns, who are chatting

with trench mutants, who are hitting on ghost cashiers, who are secretly wishing the evil scarecrow would look their way. It’s an amazing time, seeing all level of employee from all the various departments come together under this big carnival tent with one singular goal in mind; to scare the hell out of YOU. So I hope you’ll indulge me a bit as I gush over my cast and crew. Plus, I have nothing else to write about as Halloween consumes my life for the next six weeks. So it’s win-win for ALL of us! After 15 weeks of hectoring, I FINALLY got Paul Bogle (consigliere of the Cape May Fudge Mafia) to deliver a bunch of Original Fudge Kitchen T-shirts to me at the pier. Why,

you might ask? For our fudge sample zombie, of course! Yes, a couple of our zombie roamers will be walking around with trays full of… stuff for you to sample (avoid anything with “nuts”) and, as a bonus, should you enjoy anything you try, you can order a pound of it to take home. Guy of the Week: I know we all have a “guy” or two in our lives — a car guy, a cable guy, a Brazilian wax guy. I have a popcorn guy. Al Olivero and his crew at Frank’s Theaters in Rio Grande have been dutifully saving me all the popcorn they sweep off the floor every night to use for our evil popcorn machine effect for Morey’s Fears (I, uh, I wouldn’t eat it). In fact, we’ll be individually branding each popped kernel with the Frank’s logo. Okay, that’s ridiculous and not true. And I may have just gotten them all fired for saying this publicly. But anyway… popcorn! Yay! How to Make Your Car Smell Like Popcorn for a Week of the Week: Fill it with seven large trash bags full of popcorn, park in 85-degree heat in the sun, let simmer four hours, stir, serve. Abandoned Singer of the Week: Me. My musi-

Page 44

Thursday, September 27, 2012 The Undertow ? From Page 43 cal partner-in-crime (and partner-in-love) Will Knapp (Ding!) has been playing regularly over at the Cape May Brewing Company in Erma, entertaining halfbuzzed yokels on Saturday afternoons (I’m sorry, that’s an unfair characterization, I’m sure they’re three-quarters buzzed…) as they tour the brewery and taste the various pilsners, ales and lagers created there. Will’s solo show is a blast; I caught him regularly before we Acousticed our Mayhem. So stop by and tip heavily; they’re paying him in bottle caps and foam. Facebook Kerfluffle of the Week: I posted something on a fellow musician’s topic thread last week which was, to put it mildly, misinterpreted. So I just want to say, unequivocally and without any room for interpretation, that I believe Rose Kelly to be one of the four or five best singers in the world, literally, the WORLD, which I say with not an ounce of hyperbole, and have thought so since the first time I heard her in the Ugly Mug on May 23, 1993 when she fronted Southwind and absolutely melted the windows with her cover of Melissa Etheridge’s “Like the Way I Do.” If you’ve ever heard Rose sing you know she’s been gifted by God. If you haven’t heard Rose sing then you must do so immediately. She’s starting up a new combo with percussionist Andy Vernon (a founding member of the great local blues band Bluebone) and local guitar legend Ed Dobbs. You can catch them at Barry Tischler’s Friday night open mic at the Pilot House. Jen Dowe of the Week: Jen Dowe. As stated in this space before, there is no more exasperating karaoke singer on earth than the lovely Jen. Every moment she attends Terry O’ke at the Rio Station is fraught with tension, anxiety and garlic breath. The 17 versions of The Band Perry’s “If I Die Young” are, apparently, not the right one. And she’s never fully grasped the concept of waiting for her turn (it’s a true karaokracy). She is incredibly high maintenance, constantly

displeased and hair trigger irritable. She also performs with joy and is one of my favorite people in the world.I’m also fond of her fella, Jason Hetherington. Jason and I have worked out a bit where, as he approaches the karaoke stage, I play a driving, old school rap tune (usually Public Enemy) and he exhorts the crowd to “get ready for some hard-core s***!” Then busts into a masterful version of “The Bare Necessities.” Sweet. Speaking of Terry O’ke, to answer a question somebody asked earlier this summer, I’m not sure why my nipples are always erect, they just are. I guess I’m just the Jennifer Aniston of karaoke hosts. Belated Happy Birthday of the Week: To Master Owen Freedom O’Brien, 11, a beautiful, talented, remarkable boy. Happy Anniversary of the Week: When this issue goes to print Cathrine and I will be just a few days shy of our 12th wedding anniversary (the over/under was 11.5 so pay up, suckers) assuming we make it through this weekend. I really lack the words to describe what she has meant to me over the last 17 years we’ve been in each other’s lives (though I’m sure she has a few to say about me…) other than to say that, in a life that consisted of 30 years of almost unwaveringly poor decisions, the one good one had made all the difference. Lastly this week, I’m going to be trying something new with the column this winter, and reaching out to local businesses to sponsor Undertow. Meaning; you bring me in for a (free) meal and (free) drinks or a (free) show, and in return your business will be the (free) focus of the column that week. I’ll hang out with the staff, get some tasty quotes, maybe a little gossip, and then literally DOZENS of readers will learn more about the ins and outs of your establishment. I think it’s a pretty nifty plan. If you agree and would like to be targeted… I mean, profiled, drop a line to info@exitzero.us to set it up. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

We went on a double date to the C-View’s wing night. We go whenever we can, and we try all the wings. Well, my husband eats the suicide wings, and they really are as hot as they sound. I don’t think anyone else competes with the wings here. And they make a pretty darn good Long Island Iced Tea, too. — BRITA STARK, CAPE MAY

East Lynne Stages A Mad Romp

N

Screwball comedy “It Pays to Advertise” is on show at the First Presbyterian Church

INETY-SEVEN percent of the public believe what they’re told, and what they’re told is what the other chap’s been told — and the fellow who told him read it somewhere,” announces marketing maven Ambrose Peale to would-be businessman Rodney Martin in It Pays to Advertise. The Equity professional East Lynne Theater Company presents this screwball comedy through October 13, with an 8:00pm curtain. It is the usual Wednesday through Saturday schedule, except there is no show on Wednesday, October 3, and an added show on Sunday, October 7 at 7:30 p.m. Written by Roi Cooper Megrue and Walter C. Hackett, It Pays to Advertise was a Broadway hit that was twice made into a movie: a silent in 1919, and in 1931 with Carole Lombard. The premise — and promise —that anything can be sold is at its core, but it also examines the very nature and romance of advertising. Decades before AMC’s Mad Men, it

The cast of It Pays to Advertise: back, Glen Corlin, Tom Byrn, Phil Pizzi, and Thomas Raniszewski. Front: John Cameron Weber, Kate Shine, Matt Baxter Luceno, and Maria Silverman demonstrates that an ad campaign might be better than the product. All it takes is one adventurous young man to announce, “Advertising is responsible for everything!” and he and his two friends are off and running in this mad romp.

The performances are at The First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, 500 Hughes Street. Tickets are $30, $25 for seniors, and $15 for full-time students. Call (609) 884-5898 or visit www.eastlynnetheater.org.

The Movie Column

W

By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival

E ARE excited and honored to introduce Cape May to one of its own — a resident with a background that you may never have known but for an excellent film we’re showing on Saturday night at the Film Festival. Mirror Dance tells the story of Margarita White, a ballet instructor with ties to the Cape May community. Margarita will join us on Saturday night to answer questions and offer insights into her documentary. This movie beautifully leads you through her life in Cuba during the revolution and its aftermath, up to Margarita’s reuniting with her twin sister and family in Cuba today. Mirror Dance f loats through its storytelling as a ballerina f loats across the stage. It’s imagery of Cuba past and present offers a captivating look at the country that so many (like me) romanticize, yet few actually know. The ballet element of this film is almost a backdrop — albeit a gorgeous, artistic one — to a story that has more depth and meaning than any

Mirror Dance tells the poignant story of two sisters growing up in Cuba during the revolution I’ve seen in recent years. Margarita and her twin sister Ramona danced with the National Ballet of Cuba. The story begins with an exploration of family as the two sisters have been almost inseparable since birth. In 1952, as civil unrest grew over Fulgencio Batista taking control of Cuba, the sisters entered the Alicia Alonso Academy. Alonso was a premiere ballerina in Cuba, and her school was among the finest in the

world. However, revolution was in the making, and it was difficult for the arts that had little or no subsidy from the Batista regime at the time. Margarita met John White, who came from Los Angeles at the invitation of Alonso to perform. They were married, and Margarita relocated to the US at a time where that branded her a traitor. The story elegantly unfolds with lifts and drops that you would expect from a film about ballerinas. There is a sense of redemption in the end but also of loss. Margarita has her homecoming, and likewise we welcome her to her home in Cape May as we have selected this film to screen as our feature film on Saturday night. Come enjoy a special reception with Margarita and John. We have invited the film’s directors, Frances McElroy and Maria Teresa Rodriguez. The Cape May Film Festival will take place on October 19-21 at the Chalfonte Hotel with short films from Curator Stefan Prosky, guest curated programming, and great film retrospective programs. Visit capemayfilm.org to learn more or buy passes or call/text 609-326-FEST (3378).

The Old Fogey

A

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

H, PROHIBITION. I remember not being too alarmed when it came into force, as the D’Catur Mansion always has some 3,000 bottles of finest Scotch laid down in the cellar. It’s enough to last a year, maybe 18 months if I give up my nightcap, which I have only done in times of direst emergency, such as when we expected a Nazi attack and had a blackout. This night, I tried to find and pour my whisky in the darkness but miscounted the number of steps I knew would take me from the master bedroom to the Drinks Room — out of bed, 59 steps to the door, turn left, 300 steps to the staircase, 192 steps down, then first right. A short 500 steps across the hallway then another 254 through the Trophy Room. From there, a 45 degree turn and 398 steps diagonally across to the decanter. Sadly, my post-dinner tipple was a touch on the strong side and I fear I turned only 43 degrees at the last stage, bringing me not to the drinks trolley but to Mrs D’s gardening cart, where it would seem I poured myself

a generous measure of extra-strong liquid fertilizer and downed it in one. I did think the taste a little unusual, but the kick was substantial and I wobbled back to bed. Only when morning came did I find my hair and beard had grown by 30 feet, and my toenails were curved like bobsleigh runners. Once my staff had trimmed me free, I put two and two together and from then on added a few drops of the stuff to a marked decanter when we had guests we were not too keen on. But I was peeved on behalf of my coun-

trymen’s constitutional right to bear a hangover, and so organized what was the East Coast’s largest supply line of booze. We of course ran a few fast ships back and forth to distract the navy cutters, but our main supplies came in through a castiron pipeline that allowed ships to dock at a harmless little “rock” three miles off the coast and have the beer pumped onto land. At its peak, we had 3,000 gallons an hour coming ashore. Things went awry one day when we had a high-pressure blowout on the lawn in front of Congress Hall, and a 100-foot-high geyser of beer erupted. In the panic to stop the flow before the coastguard spotted it, a young lad shut the valve off completely, causing some 10 million gallons of finest beer to vent into the old unused waterpipes under Cape May. It has stayed there to this day, fermenting, building pressure, until one unlucky poke with a garden spade, or one ill-chosen excavator shovel, and we will all be propelled upwards with the force of a yeasty atom bomb.

EACH week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. This week’s recipient is Brenda Zwidel from Romania. What do you do and what were you doing when we interrupted you? I work at West Cape May Elementary. I’m on my way to buy a snack at Wawa, and then heading home to make my husband dinner. What do you love about Cape May? Hmm, I’d have to say the well-preserved history. When is the last time you received flowers? About two months ago, from some generous dinner guests. The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I cannot agree on a fair division of household labor. We both work full-time. He does help around the house — I know plenty of other women whose men are completely useless, and that’s not the case here. He cuts the grass/rakes leaves/shovels snow, takes out the trash, and does dishes (occasionally). But I do EVERYTHING else: laundry, grocery-shopping, cooking, billpaying, vacuuming, etc. Is this fair? We have dinner out riding on your answer (Merion Inn for me, Lucky Bones for him). — Hired Help Dear Help Please make your reservations at the Merion now, as the Answer Lady knows exactly ONE couple in which the woman does not do the lion’s share of the household chores. One. Out of... several dozens. And no, it is not fair. (And before outraged men

start flooding the Answer Lady’s inbox with retorts, a disclaimer: she does not know all the reasons WHY this is, simply that it is.) She does not think there is an organized and fiendish conspiracy on behalf of men to subjugate the “fairer sex.” One thing the Answer Lady’s husband tells her when they have a disagreement is that he is not a mind-reader. Perhaps a list of chores, thought-out, agreed upon, hung on the refrigerator and spelling out each person’s responsibilities would help. The Answer Lady also believes that women

can be their own worst enemies. For instance, if (theoretically) the Answer Lady’s husband offered to go the grocery store for her, she’d give him a list, which he might (theoretically) deviate from, and some coupons, which he might (theoretically) forget to use, and then it’s a matter of ‘if you want something done right you must do it yourself.’ So we sigh and we do it ourselves, and then complain about it. Here are two things the Answer Lady will be doing in the next 24 hours to make her life easier: 1 — sign up for online shopping at the grocery store; and 2 — order local author J.M. Kearns’ new book How Can I Be Your Lover When I’m Too Busy Being Your Mother? She suggests you do the same. Dear Answer Lady I had guests all summer and my house is trashed. The very thought of holiday entertaining is giving me the vapors. How do I tackle this? — Trashed Hostess Dear Trashed By making someone else do it, of course. You need a clean slate — call Good Housekeepers; they’ll get your house shining before turkey day.

THE WINNERS ARE IN!!!

This summer we ran a contest between our restaurant outlets to see who could sell the most Cape May Winery Wine. There were weekly winners, monthly winners, and now here are the overall winners from the five outlets that participated. Coming in 5th Place was BRAD VILE of Cucina Rosa

There was a tie for 3rd between SHELLY BURKHART & MARGO DICKINSON, both from Tisha’s

In 4th place was JEFF LoSASSO of Fresco’s

in Second Place was LUKE DeMUSZ of 410 Bank Street

and the Number One Wine Salesman this season was... PETAR DYANKOV from The Peter Shields Inn! But the Outlet that sold the most wine was Tisha’s! So congratulations, Paul and Jennifer Negro!!!

And thank you all for Participating!

What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you and where are you from? I’m Bob Dreyfuss. I was born in New Jersey, I lived for 30 years in Virginia, and starting in June, I became a fulltime local of Cape May. Why did you move? I love the beaches, and I am lucky to be able to work from anywhere. I’m a writer for The Nation and Rolling Stone. Any plans for later? I’m going home to watch a baseball game and make dinner... with a cold beer in my hand. Coincidentally, beer is Exit Zero’s theme this week. You’re a fan? I love it! My favorite is Blue Pig Ale, which they serve at Congress Hall. It takes a long time for me to drink a beer, because I like to savor it. Interview by Gabi Urda PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

A Review of Cape May Stage’s newest hit... By Catherine Dugan

OMETIMES, the toughest battles are fought on the home front, as veteran war correspondents learn in Time Stands Still, the thoughtprovoking new production from Cape May Stage. We meet writer James (Jon Lindstrom) and photographer Sarah (Sandy York) as they are returning from Germany, where Sarah has been recovering from injuries caused by a roadside bomb. The longtime couple is tentative with each other — James trying to coddle Sarah through her recovery, Sarah trying to show her gratitude for his concern. When old friend Richard (Jonathan Brody) visits with his new, and very young, girlfriend, Mandy (Maggie McDowell), the contrast between the comfortable new couple and Sarah and James is striking. Their snarky, superior comments at Mandy’s expense reveal the armor they hide behind, and Mandy, who starts out as the comic relief, comes to express a truth Sarah and James ignore — those who fail to see the beauty in the world are just as blind as those who fail to see the horror. The apartment Sarah and James share

The stars of “Time Stands Still” rehearse a kissing scene is as messy as their lives, and small adjustments during the play hint at changes in the relationship. York, who is a Princetoneducated triathlete as well as an experienced stage actress, beautifully conveys the steely strength inside a small, scarred woman. As James, Lindstrom, an Emmy-nominated veteran of film, television and theater, reveals a man racked with guilt, both because he was not there when Sarah was hurt, and because his time away from the front lines has awakened a desire to be comfortable. actor Brody captures photo editor Richard, who experiences war vicariously and chooses a peaceful life with Mandy. And as Mandy, Maggie McDowell is pitch-perfect as she transforms from a stereotype to a serious woman with her own kind of strength. At the end, we realize that Sarah is most at home in the “war du jour,” but you want to sit on the couch and continue the conversation — what comfort do we deserve, and what do we owe each other? Time Stands Still is written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Donald Margulies (Dinner with Friends.) The play is directed by Roy Steinberg, with Lisa Shames as stage manager, and Shawn Fisher the scenic and lighting designer. Costumes are by Michele Sinacore, with sound by Benjamin Loverin. Time Stands Still at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse runs through October 13, Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8, with matinees Sundays at 3. The show contains strong language, and is recommended for ages 15 and up. The play runs two hours, with one intermission. Nature Trails Next to the lighthouse in the Cape May Point State Park there are several trails weaving through ponds, dunes, marsh and forest. Yoga Become one of the 15 million Americans who practice yoga by joining Judy Heany of Balance Pilates, located at 600 Park Boulevard in West Cape May. The courts are open to the public daily for just $10 per hour and a half. For more information call (609) 884-8986. 6. Horseback Riding At Hidden Valley Ranch, you can take lessons in the pastimes of heroes and kings under the watchful gaze of Nancy Hall and her daughter Angi Dickenson, who have nearly 70 years of combined equine experience. Saddle up. Call Hidden Valley Ranch at (609) 884-8205 for more information, or check them out on facebook. 7. Fishing Cape May is one of the busiest commercial fishing ports in the US. The sport fishing is big business, too... AND a whole lot of fun. South Jersey Marina boast the Murderer’s Row, a top-notch selection of boats with crews who know these waters better than anyone. Try the experienced team of Stalker Sport Fishing: (609) 231-9611, or the Miss Chris fleet: (609) 884-3939. Activity Of The Week

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Vampires meet John Hughes At Elaine’s Dinner Theater

H

IGH school is already a pretty scary place, and now there are vampires roaming the hallways. Elaine’s Dinner Theater takes a look back at the 1980s with their current show, Sixteen Candelabras, an affectionate parody of the John Hughes films that helped the 40-somethings among us get through high school. Though he may be best known for Home Alone, Hughes directed stories that captured the trials and tribulations of teenagers. Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles featured the brat pack — Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Emilio Estevez, and Ally Sheedy — playing stock characters like the princess, the nerd, the jock, and the odd loner. Though there are a lot of Hughes references, you don’t need to know the movies to enjoy Sixteen Candelabras. The students are easy to recognize: Blake is the star athlete, Floyd is seeking to fit in, Sandi is always hitting the books, and Chuckie is trying to break out of the friend zone. As out of place as all parents

Sixteen Candelabras, now playing at Elaine’s Dinner Theater, runs through mid-November are in teen movies, Blake’s dad hovers around, taking a little too much interest in his son’s social life. When a mysterious girl by the name of Heather comes to town, things start to get really creepy. The show is charmingly self-aware — the jokes about copyright infringement are some of the best — and it makes good use of the layout of Elaine’s dining room. Sixteen Candelabras has a little music, a

lot of laughs, and some audience interaction. The waiters and waitresses are the actors, and they joke with the kids and teens in the room, react to unexpected noises — don’t sneeze — and tease the adults. The dinner includes soup or salad, an entree, dessert, and coffee, and you can add cocktails or appetizers for an additional charge. The food is tasty, the atmosphere is fun and there are plenty of kid-friendly choices on the menu. Seating is at 7:30, and the show goes pretty late, so consider whether tiny tots will stay awake. Adults are $44.95, teens $34.95, and children $24.95. Elaine’s Dinner Theater is located at 513 Lafayette Street in Cape May. Call 609-884-4358 for reservations. Sixteen Candelabras runs through midNovember, and, if you find the show has awakened your taste for spooky fun, Elaine’s also hosts ghost-hunter weekends, murder mystery weekends, ghost tours, and, on Saturday October 27, a Halloween Vampire Bash. Next week: An Acting Class at the East Lynne Theater Company

« FUN FACT... The night they met, Jance wrote her number on a cocktail napkin for Rob. Two years later, he decided to propose after a walk on the beach... but the first three times he asked her to join him, she wasn’t in the mood! First, she wanted to read, then swim in the ocean, then nap. But the fourth time’s a charm. They celebrated that night at Cape May Historic Tennis Club.

JAMISON is a black two-year-old, long-haired Shepherd. This sweet girl is a bit nervous at first, but with just a little patience, you’ll be her best friend. Jamison knows some basic commands and she’s eager to learn more. She’s also very energetic and will require consistent exercise to keep her happy. Jamison did not get along with the other dog in her house, but she’s good with cats. The adoption fee is $95.

«

PETEY is a year-and-a-half old. He was abandoned by his owners, which is hard to understand, especially considering how charming he is. Petey is playful (he loves chasing balls), and affectionate. He knows a number of commands, and he’s good on a leash, but he does not like cats or dogs. Because he is so energetic, the folks at the shelter don’t reccommend a home with children under six. The adoption fee is $95.

ROCKY was brought to the shelter in May, and now he’s living in a foster home... one of the shelter employees took him home because he was so stressed out living there. Rocky is housebroken and good with kids and cats, just not other dogs. Because he’s a laid-back older gentleman, he’d love to hang on the couch and watch TV with you. Rocky wants nothing more than to love you. Will you let him? The adoption fee is only $35.

LILY is waiting patiently for a forever home. She’s a friendly four-year-old female who loves to be pet, and there sure is a lot of her to love... Lily is a large girl! She’s just a little wary of being held, but she’ll lay on your lap on her own terms. If you think Lily sounds like the right match for you, give her a second chance. The adoption fee is $20.

REEBA is at the shetler with her sister, Ping. They’ve both been trying their best to adjust to life here, but they need a home where they can relax and learn to trust people again. The girls can be pet, but they are scared of a lot. With enough patience and love, we think they’ll be very sweet. Their adoption fee is $70.

GEORGE is waiting at the shelter with his brother, Jerry. They were brought in off the streets a few months ago, and they are slowly adjusting to life there. George is friendly and outgoing; Jerry is still scared. If you think you can spare the time and love for both (hopefully both!), stop by. The adoption fee is only $70.

17 th ANNUAL DAVID C. DOUGLASS, SR. Golf Tournament & Scholarship Fund Raiser Day Sunday, September 30, 2012

8am until 6pm Avalon Golf Club & Menz Restaurant • Music By Bare Bonz This event is in memory of Officer Douglass, killed in the line of duty while protecting our community February, 18, 1994. Please let me take just a moment to tell you about Officer Douglass. He had been employed with the Lower Township Police Department, was a volunteer firefighter, a member of the S.W.A.T. Team, worked with the K-9 Units, was a firearms instructor and active in many of our local organizations. David was a remarkable man who thought nothing of taking the time to help his friends, neighbors and local children with anything that they needed. David was dispatched to a call of smoke in our local area of North Cape May on the evening of February 18, 1994. Upon arriving at the scene, he witnessed a man running from the property. He was pursuing the subject on foot, when sadly David was fired upon by the subject. David died that evening brutally and senselessly leaving behind his wife, Debbie and three children, David Jr., Cortney and Tina. We shall never forget David or the sacrifice he made for our safety. Please join us in giving back to the community in Dave’s honor. We are pleased to announce that year to date this program is responsible for over $89,000 in awarded scholarships to local students in the community.

A Heartfelt Show Hits The Stage

HERE are only two weeks left to see Time Stands Still, the compelling new drama playing at Cape May Stage. Audiences and critics alike have been raving about this thought-provoking drama, “ripped from today’s headlines.” Time Stands Still tells the story of Sarah and James, a photojournalist and a foreign correspondent trying to find happiness in a world gone sadly awry. Theirs is a partnership based on telling the toughest of stories, but when their own narrative takes an unexpected turn, the adventurous couple confronts the prospect of a more conventional life. This moving new play will prompt poignant questions about the nature of responsibility to ourselves, to our loved ones, to our community, and to our world. Running Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 3 through October 13, this is a production youll be telling your

Exit Zero Goes On Vacation

Vicki Timberman and her daughter Carly, of West Cape May, took Exit Zero to Niagara Falls. (It was Vicki’s 20th anniversary... her hubby Ben is taking the picture!) While they were there, they visited this floral clock in Niagara Parks. It’s photographed as many times as that famous waterfall, and the designs on the face of it are created with up to 16,000 carpet bedding plants, Vicki tells us. PHOTOGRAPH BY BEN TIMBERMAN

Bird Droppings

T

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

HE Hawk Watch Platform at Cape May Point State Park is one of the most amazing places on earth. Here, on a simple elevated wooden platform, everyday folk (just like you) climb the steps. Walk up to the rail. And discover a whole, new, exciting parallel universe. For FREE. Of course the universe I’m talking about is Cape May’s celebrated, super-rich abundance of birds. This is a bird column, after all. That’s not all. These normal, everyday folk (just like you) discover that not only do they share a universe with an array of real cool-looking waterfowl, grebes, rails, herons, egrets, hawks, eagles, falcons, sandpipers, plovers, gulls, terns, woodpeckers, doves, swifts, swallows... etc., etc., etc... BUT, there is already this whole broad band of the human spectrum that is fascinated by these very same really cool creatures. Hundreds of people. Thousands. They come to Cape May from all over the world just to stand on the platform (just

listen and you’ll hear something akin to the United Nations of Birding)! They’re called bird watchers. But they don’t necessarily call themselves bird watchers. They’re just everyday folk who discovered (a little ahead of you) that the world is packed with these really cool looking waterfowl, grebes, rails, herons, egrets, etc., etc., etc... And all you have to do to see

them is to step onto the platform, too. It gets better. Not only can you see them, you can have someone point them out to you. For FREE! There are people there who will tell you about them. Also for FREE. Tell you what corner of the universe they breed. You know, in Cape May — RIGHT NOW! There are birds that herald from Greenland, Arctic Canada, even Alaska, and are heading for Central and South America. What other cool stuff can you learn? Well, how about the specializations that make different species, different species? There’s one particular crowd-pleasing bird that you can see from the Hawk Watch Platform called a Black Skimmer. It’s a very specialized tern whose knife-edged lower bill is designed to cut through the water and snap up fish. The birds move like figure skaters and yap like terriers. They arrive in squadrons, make a circuit or two of Bunker Pond, then depart. If someone wasn’t there

GET TO THE OTHER SIDE.

No matter which half of the Twin Capes you’re on, there’s always more to see and explore waiting on the other side. And there’s no better way to get there than the Cape May–Lewes Ferry. From the waterparks in Delaware, to Victorian architecture in Cape May, if you aren’t visiting both sides of the Twin Capes, you’re missing half the fun.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 111 to shout: “Skimmers. Low over the water. Heading left,” you (as an everyday visitor) might never know that a really cool natural spectacle was unfolding before your eyes. You might also be oblivious to the several Bald Eagles soaring overhead. Or the male Wood Duck tucked up against the reeds. Or the Cape May Warbler foraging in the pine, south of the platform. That’s where all of the FREE help comes in! The Interpretive Naturalists provided by New Jersey Audubon’s Cape May Bird Observatory and sponsored by Swarovski Optik of North America. Right. Swarovski. Like the manufacturers of fine crystal. The beautiful figurines people (just like you) admire in display cases. Come to think of it, people like birds for pretty much the same reason they like objects made out of Swarovski crystal. They’re beautiful. Gratifying. Catch the light. It’s the same kind of glass they put in Swarovski binoculars. The kind of binoculars they use on the Hawk Watch Platform. FREE never looked better. Unless, of course, you decide to buy Swarovski binoculars or spotting scopes (at the Cape May Bird Observatory, of course). Even then,

The Cape May Warbler is one of many special finds for birders on Cape Island it’s only expensive for one day. After that, everything is back to being FREE. Want to enjoy a FREE look through Swarovski binoculars? Just head up to the Hawk Watch Platform in Cape May Point State Park any day from 8am to about 5pm and ask any of the Interpretive Naturalists. If you want to enjoy a FREE look through a bunch of different Swarovski (and others) binoculars and spotting scopes, then head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-8842736), and open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm. You can ask the staff for help,

you can pick up a FREE birding map and checklist, and you could pick up a schedule of our daily walks. You can talk to our staff about the best optics for birding (including those Swarovski 8x32s), check out field guides, and anything else you might need. While you are there, scan the bookshelves for some bargains in the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, or pick up some of the newest HAWKS in Flight clothing for your wardrobe. If you can’t make it to Cape May, check out BirdCapeMay.org. You can join Pete for his Monday morning walk at the South Cape May Meadows. Just meet by 7:30am in The Nature Conservancy parking lot on Sunset Blvd. FREE Loaner binoculars are available at no cost; the walk is $6 for CMBO or NJ Audubon members; $10 for non-members. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.
