Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Louise O’Neil of Clark, New Jersey. How long have you been coming to Cape May? For about 15 years. Who are you normally with? My two daughters, my son-in-law, and my three grandsons. Favorite thing about Cape May? I love seeing plays at Cape May Stage, shopping at the Cape May Bird House, and spending the day at the beach — especially Sunset Beach. Least favorite thing? Nothing... well, except the rain. Favorite restaurants? Mad Batter for breakfast, Cape Orient for dinner, and we always get fish from the Lobster House. Favorite place to stay? That would be on New York or New Jersey Avenue. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I would make it my permanent residence! Favorite thing about Exit Zero? Everyone in the pictures look so happy. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I don’t think I have one. What’s your T-shirt size? I’ll take a large, please!

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Diane Stopyra. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Quotes Of The Week

“We live in an age when pizza gets to your home before the police..” — Jeff Marder “The perfect lover is one who turns into a pizza at 4:00am — Charles Pierce “You better cut the pizza into four pieces, because I’m not hungry enough to eat six.” — Yogi Berra

Random Factoid

LUCY Clough of Domino’s holds the record for longest pizza delivery in history. She took a Domino’s vegetarian supreme pizza the distance of 16,950km from Feltham, London all the way to Melbourne, Australia, on November 19, 2004. It took two whole days for it to get there.

Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... Limonata ITALIAN for “lemonade”, Limonata is the perfect kid’s drink for adults. This summery cocktail contains Limoncella, the national drink of Italy. The locals call it sunshine wine, and for good reason — Limoncella is made from fermented lemons, which are steeped in a mixture of sugar and alcohol for at least 20 days. The sweetness of this drink will compliment the saltiness of a Margarita Pizza.

Ingredients: 2 oz citrus vodka 1/2 oz limoncella 1 oz fresh lemon juice 3/4 oz simple syrup 1 lemon slice Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice. Shake vigurously and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish cocktail with a slice of lemon.

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

Beware Of Pirates

WE’VE all been there — driven to our wit’s end by a neighbor who insists on blocking our driveway with his monster truck, or leaving trash cans on the street all week, or blasting music as loud as the speakers will go at 5:00 in the morning. Sometimes, a feud between neighbors gets so out of hand that someone decides to move, and that’s a shame. But sometimes, a feud gets so heated, a neighbor decides to steal his adversary’s $30 pirate flag and that’s, well, kinda funny. At least, this is what happened between a couple of local residents last month. How the dispute started doesn’t really matter. It sounds like typical neighbor discord to us. What IS entertaining (a shame, but entertaining) is what happened on September 16, just three days before National Talk Like a Pirate day, no less. A man — we’ll call him Charles — called the police because his neighbor, CJ Ryan, was insisting on flying a pirate flag. It’s not your typical skull and crossbones pirate flag, but one depicting a white arm waving a white sword on a black background… a “violent” flag according to the complaint report filed. And CJ also, Charles told the cops, keeps a beer-drinking mannequin in his window “in order to harass him.” (It’s actually a cardboard cutout of baseball star Darren Daulton drinking a brewski… we checked when we popped in to see Charles last week. “I don’t know why you’re running this story,” he later told us. “I don’t think it’s funny.”) CJ said he hung his flag “back in June or July,” because his “daughter and two sons are really into pirates.” The perturbed neighbor, he says, thinks not only that the flag is

“directed at him,” but that it’s been inhibiting him from selling his house, which is on the market. Officer Shawn Austin was assigned to the “civil matter,” CJ said, which the policeman handled by explaining to Charles that nothing can be done. But the complainant decided differently. “My family left for dinner at 6:00,” said CJ, who describes himself as “non-confrontational.” “And when we returned around 8:00, the flag was gone, so I contacted the police. I was laughing and I said, ‘I apologize for calling but someone stole my pirate flag.’ It sounded stupid. But yeah, I guess you could say I felt pillaged.” When the police arrived for a second time that day, Charles admitted to plundering the booty. He was charged with theft, and a Halloween court date is pending. Although CJ — who’s hoping this court date will result in a no-contact order — has since replaced the flag with a more “descriptive” one, depicting a skeleton with a bleeding heart, he says he and his family “ARRGHHHH” happy to have the original back. “If my neighbor had stolen it while wearing a pirate costume,” CJ said, “I probably would have let it go.” Good to know, all of you scallywags out there.

Hole-In-One for Life Rolls On

CHAD de Satnick of de Satnick’s Window Fashions was just 24 years old when, while surfing at Poverty Beach, he suffered a compression injury in which two vertebrate on the back side of his neck bone shattered. “The neurosurgeon said I’d never surf again, and that I might not ever walk again,” he told us. “I wanted to prove him wrong.” And prove him wrong, Chad did. By the time he left the

hospital, he had only a temporary paralysis in his arms, and a new-found desire to advocate for those who don’t get so lucky. A year-and-a-half after the accident, Chad and Backstreet Café server/general contractor Steve Coon (AKA “Buckethead, but I can’t tell you why they call me that”) took a trip to Malibu, California where a fundraising golf tournament for Life Rolls On was taking place. The organization, LRO for short, is a subsidiary of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation dedicated to “improving the quality of life for young people suffering from spinal cord injuries,” often through adaptive surfing. “There were professional surfers like Kelly Slater and celebrities like Minnie Driver at the tournament,” Chad said. “I was blown away. I had no idea of the reach of this organization.” Soon after, he launched the same LRO fundraiser at the Cape May Historic Golf Club. Last Sunday marked the seventh successful event, during which 100 golfers raised money for a good cause. “We’re still tallying final numbers,” Chad told us, “but it’s looking like it will be about $28,000, which gives us a seven-year total of $191,000.” We popped over to the event’s after-party at Harbor View on Saturday, and just outside the restaurant, we met Chad’s mom, Anita de Satnick. “How proud are you?” we asked, and Anita answered by welling up with tears and saying, “I’m a lucky duckie.” Then she ran off to retrieve the money she’d collected for the night’s 50/50 raffle. “I wanted to be very responsible with it,” she told us, “so I made sure to put it in a safe place… and then I left it there!”

Chad de Satnick, “Blind Guy” at de Satnick Window Furnishings and guest bartender at Exit Zero parties, does Cape May proud by organizing the Life Rolls On Golf Tournament fundraiser. Scott Whittle

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 On the waterfront dock, the bar was packed and the band Piracy was rocking out. Meredith Barelli, who was working the silent auction table, showed us the items up for bid, including Eagles helmets singed by the players and T-shirts signed by the cast of TV’s The Bachelor. But the real celebrity names this night were those of local businesses who came through with support – and often food. “The Lobster House kicks in, Cappy’s pizza, Lund’s Fisheries, Depot Market, they all donate,” Chad said. “There are a broad number of people who come down here, golfers from Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, Maryland, but it’s the local support that makes me most proud.” And what local support there is. We ran into Sue Lotozo of the Flying Fish, there with the Mermaid Guild’s give-away basket full of $3000 worth of merchandise from local businesses; a $5 donation to LRO this night would get you a chance to win the drawing on December 1. And Chad told us about the pasta dinner fundraiser for LRO that the Cape May Fire House hosted last Friday night… a dinner for which Uncle Bill’s graciously opened its doors. And then we ran into one golfer at the bar who told us it was his place of work — Sturdy Savings Bank — who’d sponsored his own team. Good on you, Cape May.

We also at the after-party found out the winners of this year’s tournament: Ryan Clary, Jeff Michner, and James Jones, who came in at 15 under par. “Feel free to print that,” Chad told us, “but the real winners of the event are the adaptive surfers and spinal cord injuries victims, because they are the ones reaping the benefits of this fundraiser. You know, I was just telling someone recently that the neurosurgeon who told me I’d never surf again... he must never have heard of Life Rolls On.” As for next year’s tournament? “What’s today’s date?” Chad asked. “This is the day we start planning.”

Cue The Laughs THE show currently running at Elaine’s Dinner Theater on Lafayette Street, Sixteen Candelabras, is a campy parody of John Hughes 1980s films… you know, the ones featuring Molly Ringwald and a whole lot of endearing teenage angst. But there are vampires. And musical numbers. And a drunken principal roaming the hallways. So what can you expect from such a performance? A lot of laughs. And not just because the play itself,

PARTING SHOT

written by Elaine’s Artistic Director Holly Birch Knapp, is hilarious, but because the improv that happens after the curtain goes up is equal parts funny and clever. Even the forgotten line moments that occur in any production become part of the comedy at Elaine’s… a type of comedy in which the audience plays an integral role. We caught up with castmember Parker Smith who gave us some insight into the art of breaking down the fourth wall. “It’s a theater term,” he told us. “In most traditional theaters, players on stage aren’t acting as though there is an audience; they talk to each other and to themselves. But we always wink at the audience and let them know that we know they’re there. That’s breaking down the fourth wall.” And it’s not just winking the cast does. Don’t wear a bandana on your head, like our poor friend Victor Grasso, unless you want to be called out for dressing like a hippie. And then there was the little old lady who was poked fun at for being, well, little and old. And the most amazing thing? All of this banter is seamless, as though the night’s audience had been worked into the script in advance. We asked Parker, who’s been with Elaine’s since it opened in the early 90s with a playbill of Victorian melodramas, what kind of person is drawn to a life of playing make-believe. We know these guys aren’t doing it for the money… several have second jobs in the restaurant and technology industries. Parker is himself a trial lawyer. “Any performer gets a euphoric high when they’re performing on stage,” he told us. “I’ll be at Elaine’s until they carry my body out of the theater. In fact, they may not. I might have my body embalmed and incorporated as a set piece.” Why so in love with what he does? It’s a cathartic release, Parker says. “I don’t get to make my jury laugh all day,” he told us, which is, after all, the entire point at Elaine’s. “We make people forget about whatever it is they were worried about when they came in,” he told us. Nothing we do is highbrow. There’s no message. This isn’t Shakespeare. It’s not complicated. We just want you to have a good time.” And that you will, folks, we guarantee it. And even if you don’t, there’s a pretty great bar in the theater, so there’s always that to fall back on.

The only three traffic lights on the Garden State Parkway happen to fall within 11 miles of our charmed city, which is not such a charming thing for those of us who’ve experienced the hold-ups (not to mention accidents) they’ve caused. But not for much longer. Construction on a $125 million project, slated to begin in December, will eliminate these lights. Now if only those engineers could figure a way to elminate Memorial Day Weekend traffic...

Lunch? Choose from two soups - sometimes three! - and a panini special. Dinner time is any time - grab it now and reheat it later. Or make ameal out of one of their outrageous salads. Specials every day.

Spouty-Offy

The column where anonymous gasbags have their say! DOES anyone ever really order anchovies on their pizza? — Cape May

OCTOBER 12-14

*** HOW DO you all come up with the themes? It seems like you base it on your moods. This week you were hungry and decided on a pizza issue. Last week you were thirsty so it was the beer isue! I hope you are not horny next week!— Erma [Spouty Offy Editor’s Note: We have a special machine here that, with the push of a button, randomly provides us with a theme.] *** I DON’T think I could be a pizza delivery man... because I think I’d eat up all my deliveries or people would get a pie with 7 or 11 slices! — Cape May ***

LOWER Cape May Regional High School junior Josh Pennington, the son of Steve and Debbie Pennington of Cape May, is on his way to making his dreams come true. Pennington is a pitcher for the Tigers’ baseball team. During the summer of 2012, he was invited to three different showcase tournaments, including the Delaware Valley Showcase where his fastest pitch clocked in at 91 miles per hour. At a Major League Baseball Showcase, Pennington topped that speed by throwing 92 miles per hour. These powerful pitches attracted the interest of scouts from both the Texas Rangers and the Seattle Mariners. Pennington has had a love for the game of baseball since he was just two years old. “I have no favorite part about baseball. I just love the game,” said Pennington. His father was a pitcher in a semi-professional league, and it is no surprise that Pennington credits him as being his biggest influence. Pennington is also being recruited by Boston College, Monmouth University, St. John’s University, and the University of Maryland for his skills on the mound. He would like to major in sports management. STORY BY JORDAN CRAWLEY, PHOTO BY JOSH LACAGNINA

The Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever

M

Y HEAD hurts… I spent Sunday night hanging out with Exit Zero impresario Jack Wright and had a truly splendid time, but I am highly conflicted about it since it was mine and Cath’s 12th anniversary and there are many things I wanted to do to her that would be just plain awkward if I did them to Jack. But, with her blessing, I hit the town with my Scottish bud and was mercilessly schooled in the art of professional drinking. Now, I have, in my day, consumed a few adult beverages, but I’m generally a light beer and occasional shot guy. But Jack had me drinking Innis & Gun, a posh Scottish beer that’s aged in a rum cask and was instantly the best Scottish food I ever had, followed by a couple of Old-Fashioneds (my first, Jack’s 3,743rd) and, later, some Guinness and Jameson’s on the rocks (who knew you could put rocks in Jameson’s?). Or, as I texted Ugly Mug manager Casey Smith, “We’re at Ebbitt Room pre-gaming. We are getting snootily hammered.” Now, The Ebbitt Room might strike you

as a strange place to tailgate an Eagles game but, well, okay, it really is. But they have food, a bar, and the lovely Helen Linney. Helen was the focus of a two-page photo spread in the latest Exit Zero color issue and just WON’T shut up about it… I kid, I kid. Helen is a sweet young person that I cannot talk to because I don’t understand anyone under 30, but she’s an awfully nice bartender and has a high tolerance for newspaperman badgering. Jack had the pork tenderloin which was a-MAH-zing, I had the scallops which were were fabulous, though the bacon, potato and mushroom chutney it came with was too vinegary for my palate. Chatting about scallops stirred some memories of working with Jay

Bethel many moons ago (I was a carpenter for five years, can you believe it?) and going to see Bluebone at Mayer’s Tavern, for which I am constantly dressed, and chowing down on basket after basket of fried scallops. During my time in Jay’s employ I also worked with local shoe czar Dan Casale and who bellies up to the bar but Dan Casale, Jr? See how the cosmic tumblers just fall into place sometimes? Dan was there with a friend who shall remain nameless due to the Vulcan Death Stare I got when I asked for it. The Ebbitt Room is a pretty sedate place to enjoy a cocktail and a bite, and for about 90 minutes I sat next to an older couple who said not word one to me, but then when ANOTHER older gentleman came in and announced he was from Toms River, the couple, Mr and Mrs Steve Nichol, erupted with “Hey, we’re from Toms River, too!” and it became a regular hootenanny. Apparently I just wasn’t interesting enough to talk to. The Nichols were in town celebrating their 41st wedding anniversary, while Victor Moldovan, the other Toms River guy, was hiding

The Undertow ? From Page 43 from his family reunion. All were very nice and I now know more about the inner political workings of the Toms River sheriff’s department than I ever thought I would. Thus ended our enjoyable Ebbitt Room experience (how fancy is the Ebbitt Room? Cloth towels in the men’s room fancy) and we sauntered over to the Ugly Mug on the promise of free wings and gratuitous flirting from Casey Smiff (got plenty of the former, none of the latter) and the Eagles-Giants game. (Note to Andy Reid: I wouldn’t center my endgame strategy around the opposing kicker missing twice too often.) Jack hates the Eagles and Giants and American football in general (fuzzy little foreigner) so he chatted up the (seven) people in the bar while Casey and I swapped karaoke war stories. Casey had texted me last week, pining for the days when she used to see her name in bold print in The Undertow and hoped to one day see it in here again. Which she would have three weeks ago if she’d read it. The Mug, as ever, is open year-round, offering live music on the weekends, karaoke with Jimmy J on Wednesdays, and Tom Caruso in all his Tom Caruso-ness behind the bar. And make sure you go catch Jimmy the next few Fridays at the Rio Station. He’s filling in for me while I oversee Morey’s FEARS. And I want him to do well, but not TOO well... Anyway, around halftime Casey got a text from Keith Stevenson, drummer for 5-Hour Jones (I seem to know a lot of drummers… is there a Vo-Tech drummer school down here or something?) and beau of one Mary Sexton (karaoke codename: Merry Sexbomb!), bartender at Cabanas, saying how busy it was there. As intrepid reporters, Jack and I were obligated to investigate this claim, and so shuffled our way down the street to what was, indeed, a peppy, nice-sized crowd. So we sat and had Guinness and Jameson and this is where

everything kind of falls apart. I know “Cousin” Ray Heslip was there (“Uncle” Bob was not as he is tending to his parents… if you see Bob, for God’s sake, give the man a cocktail), Kathleen Scullion, too, whom I’m pretty sure I badgered in relentless fashion because she is a very good singer who never comes to karaoke. And Jack kept pouring my Jameson into my Guinness, which I don’t think is right, but at that point he could have been pouring gasoline into it and I wouldn’t have known the difference. All in all, it was about as enjoyable as an anniversary gets without spending it with the person your anniversed to, and all made possible by Aart’s Taxi, whom you’ll be hearing more about in the coming weeks. I’m sure Jack and I made quite the Before & After picture. All on a Sunday evening in Cape May. Pretty sweet. Incomprehensible Facebook Post of the Week: From Jack Wright — “It’s so unfair and unlucky that Rangers keep getting drawn against teams from higher divisions in the Cup. First, QoS knock them out, and now they face another uphill battle against Second Division Alloa! Poor Bears.” My Reply: “What?” Painful Admission of the Week: I keep reading and hearing that 16 Candelabras, the current show at Elaine’s Dinner Theater, is really, really good. Though it makes me so bitter I can taste weird stuff in the back of my mouth, I will accept the fact that a good show can be produced there in my absence and heartily recommend you all go see it and support my friends Holly and Will Knapp (DING!) and all the other jerks having fun there without me. I loved Elaine’s and would have worked there until I died if they’d let me. They didn’t. We move on. That about does it for this week, thanks for listening and tune in next time. Hey! What a great idea! An Exit Zero radio show! It can be the SECOND form of dying media we invest heavily in… ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow

The Movie Column

Y

By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival

OU can call this year’s film festival the one that brought you “ballerinas and barbarians!” This year, the Cape May Film Festival will feature the best short films being made in and out of new Jersey. These include a feature film discussed last week called Mirror Dance, about twin ballerina sisters, one of whom lives in Cuba and the other here in Cape May and Pennsylvania. The local twin, Margarita White, will be joining us Saturday night. Our Sunday feature film focuses on the life of the creator of Conan the Barbarian, Robert E. Howard, who was born in a small town in Texas. That small town, to this day, celebrates the life and times of Howard during a festival called Barbarian Days. The creator of the famous comic book and paperback novel series (also made into more than a few films — the most famous of those starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role) died in 1936 at the young age of 30. Yet his creation lives on, and the town works it like no other! One of the foremost authorities on Howard, a historian by the name of

This years film festival will be the one that brings you “ballerinas and barbarians, according to our guy Rusty Burke, will join us Sunday to share his insights on the creator of this character who has undoubtedly withstood the test of time. Although he died young, Howard was responsible for a number of serial novels later turned to comics and still later into films (Red Sonya is another of his creations). His work would appear in magazines called “Weird Tales” (where Conan first appeared), “Oriental Tales”, or (my personal favorite)

“Spicy Adventure Stories”. These were colorful magazines, fantasy escapes no doubt. So if you’re a fan of Conan — or just a fan of campy literature — you’ll enjoy hearing the history (sometimes told with a smirk) of this colorful author told by a colorful biographer. We will kick things off on Friday night with a feature documentary about the hitchhiking travels of two wayward guys enjoying life and all the people on the way. The Highway Walkers chronicles the road trip of two adventurous guys who say they want to “challenge the viewer to volunteer, implore them to take risks, and empower them to be active. In a society where conversations are digital and adventures virtual, our journey will be a tangible, shared experience showing that our nation is worth exploring.” The lineup this year is better than ever, and we hope you can join us October 19-21 for a cinematic ride that will take you around the globe and back to the garden state. One screening costs just $10, and weekend passes start at $35. Call/text 609-326-FEST or visit capemayfilm.org for details.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

REMEMBER the day we invented the pizza. It was, as the name suggests, in Italy, but not quite the way you imagine (take no offence — I am not suggesting your imaginations lack anything, but I bet you did not think it involved a Tiger tank and a fat chef named Tony). We had just liberated Monte Casino (well, I say ‘liberated’, which I suppose it does qualify as if you can stretch that term to include the words ‘bombed’, ‘flattened’, ‘bombed again’ and ‘pulverised’) and the lads and I had camped in a small village a few miles away, where we found an abandoned Tiger tank. The Tiger was a fearsome beast, like a city block on tracks. We were repainting it in Cape May colors and practicing driving the monster. The locals were cooking a tomato and vegetable dish as thanks/apology for rescuing them/having to take the time to fight them until they changed sides again. The owner of the local restaurant, Tony, was bustling around, and all was looking promising, at least until my driver, Wally Herbert, got distracted by the German met-

ric system labels (in metric, ‘left’ is actually ‘right’) and ran over a small privy, flushing out a huge fella in with a lantern jaw, who seemed to be dressed as an old lady. Well, strike me dead if I breathe a word of a lie, but it was Benito Mussolini, so I shouted from the top of the tank to chase him down. Well, he moved fast for a fat lad and we tore up the orchard before we caught up. I shouted for Wally to stop, but he hit the wrong pedal and we surged right through the wall of the restaurant, pushing Benito ahead of us in a cloud of stone and timbers.

Well, a Tiger takes a lot of stopping, and by the time we came to a halt we had ground under-track the entire contents of the kitchen, the store-room and Benito, too. The colossal weight of the tank meant its metal treads had flattened all the ingredients, and the heat of the engine had baked them. Well, we eventually managed to reverse, leaving a wide round pancake of a doughy texture with a good ton of tomatoes and assorted toppings. “Um… where’s Benito?” I enquire as a crowd gathered. “There’s a piece-a-over-there!” Tony volunteered. “There’s another piece-a!” someone else shouted, and the cry was taken up: “Piece-a! Piesa! Pizza! Pizza!” I myself declined a piece of pizza, but these were harsh times and people were hungry, and so there was little left in an hour. These days I prefer my toppings less red, but still, once a year, have a thin crust with cheese and a sprinkling of diesel on top, for nostalgia’s sake.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I have been dating a great guy for a couple of weeks now. We’ve been out to dinner, had beers at the Mug for Phillies games, walks on the Mall and ice cream, etc. But he’s mentioned a few times now that he’s a fan of home-cooked meals, and I can’t cook! I mean, I can (probably); I’ve just never really tried. I feel like I should invite him over for a nice dinner, but the very thought of pulling off a fancy meal has me petrified. How long can I avoid this?! — Stalling Dear Stalling Theoretically, gentle reader, probably a really long time if you are willing to otherwise distract him, but that would get time-consuming and you’d have to eat eventually. The problem here is that you are allowing yourself to be overwhelmed. Inviting a man over to dinner does not have to involve an 8-course

production. Pick one thing that you think you can manage — grilling a steak, or roasting a chicken, for instance. Then import everything else: stop at Sunset Liquors for a bottle of wine, Elizabeth Degener’s bread stand for a loaf of deliciousness, some simple salad fixings at Cape May Organic Market, maybe a nice cheese from Seaside. Cookbooks are our friends, too. He likes Lucky Bones? Get the cookbook (signed by the author at the EZ store!), find one recipe you know he’ll appreciate, and focus on that. It’s when we look at get-

ting an entire meal put together that we get overwhelmed — these things are best left to professionals, like Martha Stewart. Oh, and get yourself an apron from Love The Cook so you can look the part — men are visual. (And if you really start to panic or things begin to fall apart, remove all of your clothing except for the apron and he won’t care about dinner.) Dear Answer Lady Is it so very wrong for me to expect any of my eight bridesmaids to have remembered my fourth wedding anniversary last week?? I didn’t get so much as an email or a Facebook message from any of them! — Bruised Bride Dear Bruised Yes, yes it is wrong for you to expect eight separate people to remember the specific date you got married several years ago. Are you pulling the Answer Lady’s leg? Most people have difficulty remembering their own anniversaries; if you were as self-involved as an actual bride as you are being right now, it is the Answer Lady’s guess that most of these ladies have by now suppressed any memory of the event.

What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you and where are you from? I’m Shirley Mertz from Paoli, Pennsylvania. Why are you here? I always come to Cape May this time of year because the rates are much more reasonable. I’m staying for four days, and will go to Sunset Beach — I go every time I’m in town! Any plans for later? My uncle used to own a house near the Lobster House about sixty years ago; I’ve been dining there ever since. So that’s my next destination. How do you feel about pizza? I love it, especially when there are onions on top. Although I do like plain pizza. The weirdest kind I’ve ever had was one with lots of vegetables. Interview by Gabi Urda PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

It’s that time of year again, lovely autumn, which means everyone’s mind is on the approaching holiday... Halloween. But there are plenty of other fallrelated activities to be excited about this time of year. Read on to find out...

T

HE season may have come to an end (well, sort of... it IS supposed to be 75 degrees this week), but there is still plenty to do in our charmed city. So read on to find out what’s happening right now... then get to it! For more information on any of the events you see below, contact the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities at 609-8845404 or 800-275-4278, or visit capemaymac. org. Through October 13 Cape May Stage presents Time Stands Still. Sarah and James, a photojournalist and a foreign correspondent, try to find happiness in a world gone awry. Performances will be held Wednesdays through Sundays through October 13 at 8pm. The Robert Shackleton Playhouse is located at the corner of Bank and Lafayette Streets. Admission is $35 for adults, $30 for seniors, and $15 for students.

East Lynne Theater Company presents It Pays to Advertise: A long-running hit when it opened on Broadway in September of 1914, this screwball comedy by Roi Cooper Megrue and Walter C. Hackett was twice made into a movie: a silent in 1919, and in 1931 with Carole Lombard. The premise — and promise — that anything can be sold in America is at its core, but it also examines the very nature and romance of advertising and its influence. Shows run Wednesdays through Saturdays through October 13 at 8pm, and Sunday, October 7 at 7:30pm. Shows are held at the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street. Tickets are $30 general; $25 senior; $15 students; ages 12 and under free. October 5 Stairway to the Stars Trolley Tour: Take an evening guided trolley tour from Cape May to the Cape May Lighthouse in Cape May Point State Park with narration about the lighthouse and time for a climb up the 199 steps to enjoy the view from the top of the gallery. $20 for adults, $15 children (ages 3-12). Activity Of The Week

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Class Up Your Act at the East Lynne Theater Company

A

LL the world is a stage, so why not work on your act? Take an acting class sponsored by the East Lynne Theater Company (ELTC). Victorian actors rarely had the benefit of formal acting classes. Some theater companies, like the Comedie Francaise, trained talented students, but most actors learned on the job. Sir Henry Irving — the first actor to be knighted — learned by watching other actors, playing small roles in stock companies for about 10 years before earning recognition. Some prominent actors were born into the business — Roger Kemble, the actormanager of the Warwickshire Company of Comedians, put his children to work. His son, John Philip Kemble, and daughter, Sarah Siddons, gained fame at the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane, and four other children made their living on the stage. Whatever your profession, you can probably benefit from a lesson in showmanship. Tom Byrn will teach the basics of scene work and a bit of improvisation in a

It Pays To Advertise is now playing at East Lynne Theater Company... now you, too, could be treading the boards, courtesy of acting classes being taught by the company three hour workshop on Monday, October 8, at 6pm. The $20 workshop will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street, and is geared for beginners or experienced actors ages 17 and up. Wear comfortable clothes and leave your inhibitions at the door. Call (609) 884-5898 or email eastlynneco@aol.com for reservations. Instructor Tom Byrn is an actor, director and writer. He appeared in ELTC’s pro-

duction of He and She last summer, receiving an excellent review in The Wall Street Journal. He directed The Living Newspaper, for Mad River Theater in Ohio, and has worked with theater companies in Philadelphia, Ohio, and New York, and is a member of the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble. Currently, Tom is one of 10 cast members in ELTC’s crowd-pleasing screwball comedy, It Pays to Advertise, running Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8:00pm through October 13, with an added performance on Sunday, October 7 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $30, $25 for seniors and people with disabilities, $15 for students. Children 12 and under are free. Set decades before AMC’s Mad Men, this clever farce explores the assertion that “Advertising is responsible for everything!” It Pays to Advertise, by Roi Cooper Megrue and Walter C. Hackett, opened on Broadway in 1914, and was twice made into a movie. ELTC’s artistic director Gayle Stahlhuth directs, and It Pays to Advertise looks to be one of the company’s most popular plays, so get your tickets soon. Next week: One for the Gipper

JAMISON is a black two-year-old, long-haired Shepherd. This sweet girl is a bit nervous at first, but with just a little patience, you’ll be her best friend. Jamison knows some basic commands and she’s eager to learn more. She’s also very energetic and will require consistent exercise to keep her happy. Jamison did not get along with the other dog in her house, but she’s good with cats. The adoption fee is $95.

«

PETEY is a year-and-a-half old. He was abandoned by his owners, which is hard to understand, especially considering how charming he is. Petey is playful (he loves chasing balls), and affectionate. He knows a number of commands, and he’s good on a leash, but he does not like cats or dogs. Because he is so energetic, the folks at the shelter don’t reccommend a home with children under six. The adoption fee is $95.

ROCKY was brought to the shelter in May, and now he’s living in a foster home... one of the shelter employees took him home because he was so stressed out living there. Rocky is housebroken and good with kids and cats, just not other dogs. Because he’s a laid-back older gentleman, he’d love to hang on the couch and watch TV with you. Rocky wants nothing more than to love you. Will you let him? The adoption fee is only $35.

LILY is waiting patiently for a forever home. She’s a friendly four-year-old female who loves to be pet, and there sure is a lot of her to love... Lily is a large girl! She’s just a little wary of being held, but she’ll lay on your lap on her own terms. If you think Lily sounds like the right match for you, give her a second chance. The adoption fee is $20.

REEBA is at the shetler with her sister, Ping. They’ve both been trying their best to adjust to life here, but they need a home where they can relax and learn to trust people again. The girls can be pet, but they are scared of a lot. With enough patience and love, we think they’ll be very sweet. Their adoption fee is $70.

Bird Droppings

S

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

OME hawks are just cooler than others. There. I said it. And I won’t take it back. Because it’s true. Some hawks just have more fire, more oomph, more pizzazz than other hawks and the hottest, oomphiest, pizzaziest raptors of them all are the... Drum roll, please. ...FALCONS! There’s good news for you, Exit Zero Reader. It just so happens that the peak migratory for falcons is RIGHT NOW! You can go to the Cape May Hawk Watch Platform any day this week and get in-you-face looks at Kestrels, Merlins and Peregrines. Oh, my! With average luck, you’ll see dozens — even scores. Given exceptional conditions, you may see hundreds in a single day. Okay, so maybe these blade-winged birds of prey aren’t as regal as an eagle. And just because falcons have just been reclassified as quasi-parrots (so not real raptors) doesn’t alter their appeal one tomial tooth (explanation — each member of the falcon family from the smallest kestrel to the largest

gyrfalcon have a beak with the same distinctive feature, a tomial tooth). Falcons are just plain awe-inspiring and Cape May just happens to lie on autumn’s falcon freeway. All you need to do is show up. And you don’t even have to get up with the birds. Falcons are midday to late afternoon migrants. Take Merlins. A small, dark, dart of

a bird with the directness of a strike-out fast ball and the disposition of a wolverine. It has often been said that the shortest distance between two points is spelled M E R L I N. Frequently, these ground-hugging speedsters simply appear, right in front of the Hawk Watch Platform and are gone before the official counter can call out a name. Mer. Lin. It’s about one syllable too long for the bird. American Kestrel on the other hand is a slender, colorful, crowd-pleaser of a bird. The males, with their gun-metal colored wings and russet backs, look like jewels on wings. Ruddy brown females are overall paler than Merlins. They often fly in pairs, trios, or small groups. They are as leisurely on the wing as Merlins are not and if there are dragonflies in the air, kestrels commonly “hawk” them as opportunity presents itself. Sometimes feeding birds take perches. Sometimes they munch on the wing, leaving gossamer wings in their wake.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 111 But the bird most hawk-watchers want (okay, lust) to see is the Peregrine. The name, peregrine, means “wanderer” and Cape May draws birds from as far away as Greenland and the Yukon. En route to the Caribbean and South America, most adult males simply migrate offshore. Next stop, Latin America. The only time numbers of adult male Peregrines appear is when a low pressure system is churning in the North Atlantic and winds throw the birds onshore. It’s the adult females and juvenile birds that constitute the bulk of the Cape May peregrine flight. Good flights commonly begin around 9:00am and continue until 1:00 or 2:00pm. I recall one particularly great flight in which Peregrines were appearing at the rate of one every minute. But flights of 20-30 per day are average and to break a hundred in a day is spectacular. I take it back. Seeing just one of these long-winged, long-distance migrants is spectacular. The birds move with a speed and finesse that makes other birds look like amateurs. Wingbeats are fluid, rippling. Flight, direct and fast. You enjoy Kestrels. You delight in Merlins. You marvel at Peregrines.

The Merlin might be the fastest thing in the sky Go thou and do likewise at the Hawk Watch Platform at Cape May Point. Head up to the Hawk Watch Platform in Cape May Point State Park any day from 8:00am to about 5:00pm and ask any of the Interpretive Naturalists if there are any falcons out and about. You can enjoy a FREE look through Swarovski binoculars. Then head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory, THE place for all your nature needs. The CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), and is open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm. You can ask the staff for help, you can pick up a free birding map, checklist and, you could

pick up a schedule of our daily walks just to get you started in the right direction. You can talk to our staff about the best optics for birding (including those Swarovski’s you looked through on the Hawk Watch Platform), check out field guides, and anything else you might need — or don’t know you need yet! While there, scan the bookshelves for some bargains in the used and vintage books section (maybe even a slightly used field guide), look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory (which is FREE when you become a member), or just browse around; I’m sure something will catch your eye. If it’s nice, sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it to Cape May, you’ll have to let your fingers do the birding at BirdCapeMay.org. Seymore Thanu is Pete Dunne, Director of Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Join Pete for his Monday morning walk at South Cape May Meadows. Meet by 7:30am in The Nature Conservancy parking lot on Sunset Boulevard. Loaner binoculars are available at no cost; the walk is $6 for CMBO or NJ Audubon members; $10 for non-members.
