Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Carol Johnson of Lyndhurst, NJ. How long have you been coming to Cape May? More years than I’d like to remember! I think it’s been at least 25 years now. Who are you normally with? My husband, and sometimes my granddaughters Favorite thing about Cape May? The restaurants, the people — everything is just so delightful! Least favorite thing? It’s getting a little too crowded nowadays. Favorite restaurants? The Washington Inn. Favorite place to stay? The Sandpiper, on Beach Avenue and Grant Street. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? That’s a hard one. Maybe I would make it a little more like how it used to be. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? It’s so informative and pleasant to read. The monthy color magazines are great, and are the reason I subscribed. I liked how in the October issue you superimposed the old and the new. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? It kind of caters to younger people, but that’s coming from a senior citizen. What’s your T-shirt size? Large, please!

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Diane Stopyra. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Quotes Of The Week

Random Factoid

“I think if human beings had genuine courage, they’d wear their costumes every day of the year.” — Douglas Coupland “In order to see birds it is necessary to become a part of the silence.” — Robert Lynd “Ghosts, like ladies, never speak till spoke to.” — Richard Harris Barham

ROUGHLY 25 miles north of Cape May, in Dennis Township, lies Jake’s Landing Road. Go north on Route 47 and take a turn onto a dead end road, and you’ve arrived. A favorite marsh spot for hawks, rails and waterfowl, it is a beautiful fall birdwatching spot that tends to be overlooked.

Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... Bloody-tini ALTHOUGH the deep red color of this martini may make you think otherwise, we promise it contains no actual blood (we apologize to all the vampire wannabes out there). This fun, and kind of eerie drink can add a bit of flair to this year’s Halloween party menu. The acai is a tasty little fruit with healthy properties, but when paired with liquor that fact is up for debate. That said, the bit of champagne in this drink adds a nice little touch of class.

Ingredients: 2 oz VeeV Acai Spirit 1 oz acai juice 1/2 oz fresh lime juice Top with fresh champagne 1 lime wedge for garnish Combine VeeV, Acai juice, and fresh lime with ice in a cocktail shaker and shake. Strain into a chilled martini glass and top with champagne. Serve with a fresh lime wedge.

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

How Are You Going To Vote? HOW does one decide on how to vote in a local election? We all know how we decide to vote in a general election — we typically go with the party we’ve always supported, no matter who the candidate is, and we call the other guy (and everyone who supports him) an idiot. Right? But local elections? Those are tricky. There are no party affiliations, so we are kind of stuck with considering the — gasp — issues! Or maybe not. Maybe we vote for the guy we know, who we like and who we chat with in the Acme every other week or so. Or maybe we simply vote AGAINST the guy we DON’T like, who we studiously avoid when we see him (or her) in the Acme. Which one are you? Did you turn up at the Candidates’ Night, hosted by the Cape May Taxpayers’ Association, in the elementary school last Thursday? About 250 people did, and if you were one of them, I wonder what you took away from the proceedings. It wasn’t a debate, which is a shame since without a debate it’s tough to really figure out what the candidates are all about. (This is being written while the third presidential debate is happening on NBC, incidentally.) Instead, all three candidates for the single council position that is up for grabs on November 6 — Dan Kurkowski, Shaine Meier and Terri Swain, the incumbent — answered questions without any opportunity to debate each other. Which made the proceedings a little one-dimensional. As was the square-off, a little later that night, between Mayor Ed Mahaney and the challenger for his crown, Rusty Chew. We have very strong feelings about the mayoral race, which we will address briefly

a little later in this story and in much more detail next week, but we didn’t intend to take such a strong stance in the fight for the council member seat. However, we feel that we should relate some of our opinions about what happened that night, for the benefit of those of you who didn’t turn up. We supported Terri Swain when she ran for office four years ago, but we feel that change would be a good thing. This magazine has been, and hopefully will remain, a good friend of Terri and the Swain family, but, to our ears, she sounded a little jaded the other night, and out of ideas. By contrast, Dan and Shaine were full of vim and vigor, which is, of course, easy when you haven’t yet served in public office. Terri made the point that the views they had would turn out to be “broken promises” if they ever got into office. Which might be a realistic, or a cynical, view—depending on whether you think the glass is half-empty or half-full. We are going to take the optimistic approach and say that City Hall needs new blood. Dan Kurkowski, a trial lawyer by trade, is, not surprisingly, an accomplished speaker. His opinions on many issues also meshed with ours quite perfectly — so we enjoyed listening to him. However, we don’t feel that Dan has had the time to get immersed in the local community. We are the last people to say you need to have lived here forever to be taken seriously, but we think Dan needs to put a few more miles on the Cape May clock before he earns the right to get a seat on city council. Shaine ran for office a couple years ago and we said then that he was a breath of fresh air but wasn’t quite ready for the show. Now we feel that he is. Shaine has involved him-

self with a lot of different local organizations, and we don’t believe he has done that simply because he wants to be on city council — we think he’s done that because he actually wants to serve his community. And we think the time is right to give him that chance. Is he a little wet behind the ears? Yes. Was his support of the plan to bring the trains back to Cape May a little naive? Yes. BUT, he is a lot more knowledgeable about important local issues than most of us, and he is a thoughtful young man who seems to have his heart in the right place. He keenly wants community involvement in this town, something that a lot of politicans say... but we actually believe Shaine. And we believe that his addition to the city council would be a very good thing. Take a chance on this young man. We also want a change in the mayoral position. Oh boy, do we want a change. There are a few reasons why we don’t think that Cape May should be voting for four more years of Ed Mahaney, and we will go in to detail next week. If you watched last week’s debate, you would probably come away with the impression that Ed knows his way around local politics. And we would be the last to argue with that opinion. In fact, we would say that Ed is as close to a professional politician as a man can get when he has a full-time job away from politics. We won’t ever say that he’s not a hard-working man. The trouble is that Ed wouldn’t NEED to spend so many hours at City Hall if he was following the law, and allowing Bruce MacLeod, the City Manager, to run the city. But that’s not how Ed rolls. He’s a control freak. He was mayor once before, in 1995-96,

Norris Clark, organizer of the first ever Cape May TEDx event, with a stunning sand sculpture made specially for the event Aleksey Moryakov

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 in the good old days before the Faulkner Act came into play in Cape May, which took the power out of the mayor’s hands and gave it to a full-time City Manager. It’s become public knowledge that since Ed took office for a second time as mayor, in 2008, that he has run it like the good old days. Which is, of course, a breach of the law. Which is, in itself, a good reason to vote him out on November 6. There are other reasons, too, which we will address in next week’s issue. Watch this space.

Seriously Good Talking WHAT can make a person want to be indoors, behind closed curtains, on a day like last Sunday? A day when — nearing the end of October, no less — the sun was bright, the breeze was soft, and a person begins to regret having packed up the sandals at summer’s end. It would have to be something pretty memorable, and that’s exactly what we and 200 others experienced in the ballroom of Congress Hall. Here was Cape May’s first TEDx event – TED being the non-profit that organizes conferences all over the world in which inspirational elites in their respective fields (Bill Gates, Jamie Oliver, David Blaine, etc, etc) share, in 18 minutes each,

ideas worth spreading — the “x” signifies an independently organized TED forum. We published a lot of editorial leading up to Sunday — articles on organizer Norris Clark as well as the 12 speakers, all of them with some kind of connection to Cape Island, that Norris and his advisory board selected — so we thought we knew what to expect. We thought we had a handle on the day’s theme as well, that being the interplay between the ideas of recreation and re-creation. But we couldn’t have anticipated how moving the event would be. TED — which stands for technology, education and design, because these were the original areas of focus when the organization launched in 1984, though it’s really captured worldwide attention in the last few years — has grown to encompass all subjects. Browsing the 900TED talks available at TED.com, you’ll see topics that range from education reform to retrieving energy from floating energy pods. So at Sunday’s TEDx event, the scope was un surprisingly broad. The first lecturer, who took his place at the podium next to an authentic lifeguard chair and TEDx sand sculpture, was Danny Cohen of Fishermen’s Energy, and we listened as he described his goal to organize the fishing industry from Maine to South Carolina in order to develop off-shore energy

resources. It was a talk so powerful, we caught local business owner Viviane Rowan, who was sitting next to us, tearing up as he spoke. “We have a choice,” he said, “we can either be victims of change, or agents of it.” We’re happy to report that everyone understood the speech of our own Jack Wright, who talked about the launch of Exit Zero, despite his Scottish brogue. “What, no subtitles?” Viviane’s son, Jordan Rowan, had asked before the speech began. “And now you’ve ruined my first joke,” Jack responded. Later in the day, we listened as 22-yearold Lauren Mulholland relayed her battle with cancer that had her in and out of chemotherapy between the ages of seven and 15. It took all the way until the fourth sentence before our row was blinking back the tears. Then there was Jack Morey of Morey’s Piers, who told us the story of seaside parks (who knew the first roller coaster traveled at a blinding speed of six miles per hour?), of Wildwood (“We’re tacky and proud of it,” he said, “If you don’t like it… go to Cape May”), and just a bit about himself (“I hope to grow up to be young,” he said.) We were especially thrilled to see that Jack had such an impact on the audience (we overheard one senior gentleman saying it made him want to visit

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 Morey’s Piers) because we know how nervous he was. “I might wear a bikini on stage to distract people from my speech,” we heard him say to his server during lunch at the Red Store in Cape May Point the day before. Hanna Miller, daughter of Steve and Janet of 410 Bank Street/Frescos and a student of Harvard, lectured on our sometimes strange, sometimes wondrous, ever-mutating relationship with food. “More people watch shows like Top Chef,” she said, “than ever actually cook themselves.” Tom Carroll of Cape May bed and breakfast fame, shared an incredible 58 slides on the preservation of history; and Michael Bierut, a designer whose clients have included The New York Times and Harley-Davidson, shed new light on the welcoming power of a well-designed sign. We were especially excited to see so many 20 and 30-somethings in the audience, people like Julie Menz who launched the Cape May Organic Market this year, and Eliza Lotozo, who’s working under Michael Kline (also in attendance) to produce the Exit 0 International Jazz Festival... people we could see giving their own TED talks someday, because they’ve already had so many ideas

worth sharing. To get the word out to Cape May’s younger community and encourage attendance among this group, speaker Curtis Bashaw of Cape Resorts Group established a “scholarship” program, which included free entry for 15 hotel employees and ten young entrepeneurs. We got a hold of one of the recipients, Brian Lee, who works at Bliss and Ella’s Good to Go, who told us what a great day it was. “Young people seek out guidance from people who’ve made it,” he told us. Patrick Logue, Director of Operations of Cape Resorts Group, told us that the scholarships were in line with one of CRG’s missions: to encourage young people to establish roots here, so that Cape May’s offerings are enriched, and this place is able to sustain as a “living, breathing town,” versus “merely a Victorian set by the sea,” or, as Patrick also put it, a type of “Mr Rogers neighborhood.” When we asked Norris Clark why younger generations would be inspired to attend such an event, he explained that it’s the intersection of “two really cool things” — Cape May and TEDx — and that this intersection will be back next year. “We’re inviting new people to the advisory committee to help us find and identify other talented speakers for the future,” he told us, and he’s already put a call into City Hall about pos-

sibly booking Convention Hall as the venue, while keeping the lunch hour at Congress Hall. (Our chicken salad tasted all the better, we think, because we got to enjoy it on an Adirondack chair on the lawn of this hotel.) “In short, this was a community gift,” Norris told us. “TEDx provided a stage for these talented and inspirational and funny people to share their gifts with the wider stage.” We were pretty excited to be a part of that wider stage, and we think you will be, too. Look out for next year’s event. Trust us...

A Scary Good Weekend DON’T you just love this time of year? Sunny days, cool evenings. And... Halloween! The actual night falls on a Wednesday, which means that this weekend is when the fun happens. the biggest night is, as always, the Phantom Ball at Congress Hall, which is Friday. The theme this year is twisted fairy tales so do with that what you will. Also on Friday is the Halloween Fright Fest at Sea Salt, in the Ocean Club Hotel on Beach Avenue. On Saturday, there are parties at the Ugly Mug, featuring 5 Hour Jones; at Cabanas; at the C-View Inn; and at Marq’s Pub in the Marquis de Lafayette Hotel, where the annual GABLES party (always a fun night) will be happening.

VICTORIA MANN, one of the hardest working seniors at Lower Cape May Regional High School, structures her time around her academic and athletic schedules. She is currently ranked number one in the senior class and is focused on maintaining her grade point average, while also leading the varsity soccer team to another successful season. Mann, the daughter of Barbara and Ken Mann of Erma, started playing her favorite sport, soccer, at age five. She joined a travel team three years later, and all of her experience and sacrifice led her to being named one of the captains of the 2012 Lady Tigers’ soccer squad. “Sports keep me motivated,” said Mann, who also is a member of the varsity swim and lacrosse teams at LCMR. The youngest of three sisters, Mann believes that without athletics she would lack the discipline that she needs in order to maintain her high GPA. While she admits that she is “insane” about her grades, she has mastered the art of time management. Upon graduation, Mann hopes to attend Lehigh University as a biochemistry engineering major. She aspires to attend medical school to become a pediatrician. STORY AND PHOTO BY TYLER MEINHOLD

A Tear-Jerking Performance Comes To Cape May “The Belle of Amherst” brings Emily Dickinson’s story to life in a moving performance... Catherine Dugan

W

HEN you visit with a creative friend, you come away feeling more intelligent, if only because you were smart enough to come. So it is with the Cape May Stage production The Belle of Amherst, a one-woman show performed by Barbara Dana. Set in the Dickinson home in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1884, the play tells the story of one of America’s greatest poets using many of her own words. Written by William Luce, the show takes us through the stages of Dickinson’s life, from her outdoorsy childhood, to her flirtatious girlhood, to her role as the town eccentric, to the foreshadowing of her death. We learn of her religious doubts, her professional and personal disappointments, and her baking skills. The audience is greeted by the 53-yearold poet as if we have come for tea, and Ms. Dana seems to connect directly with each member of the audience as she shares the complex recipe for black cake. Dickinson speaks to the unseen maid, shoos away invisible cats, and addresses her parents,

Barbara Dana portrays sixteen characters in this one-woman show siblings and guests. She points out the foibles of her neighbors with such facility that we are tempted to turn and look. Her language and gestures match the stories she tells, so that she is alternately a giddy teen, a cocky student, a heartbroken lover, a grieving aunt. At the show’s end, as she presents us with her “letter to the world,” we are eager to deliver it for her. By this point, if your eyes are dry, you haven’t been paying attention.

Poetry lovers are sure to enjoy the show, and others seemed surprised at how many of Dickinson’s quotes have become commonplace in American English. For every English teacher mouthing the poems along, there were others who made noises of recognition at “Hope is the thing with feathers” or “Dogs are better than human beings because they know but do not tell.” Barbara Dana is an accomplished actress and an award-winning author who counts, A Voice of Her Own: Becoming Emily Dickinson among her popular books. When she appears on stage, the beautiful, poised veteran of film, television and Broadway has transformed herself into the reclusive, awkward Dickinson, who was not nearly as eloquent in social settings as she was on the page. The Belle of Amherst is directed by Austin Pendleton. Lisa Shames is Stage Manager, Zac Mosley is Sound and Lighting Designer, with costumes by Timberlake Studios. Kate Kampschroeder serves as Prompter and Running Crew. The play runs two hours, with intermission, and is appropriate for ages 12 and up.

The Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever

H

ARD to believe I can accrue a week’s worth of Undertow material in one three-hour sitting with Jack Wright in The Brown Room but… here we are. This time Jack and I added a third Musketeer to our posse, Mike DeMusz, the Exit Zero artist whose work squiggles its way through my excellent — okay, pretty good — book, Murder-Oke & Other Spooky Cape May Tales. Hey, it’s Halloween! What an EXCELLENT gift idea! Do you give gifts at Halloween? If not, why not? But I digress. Mike also works as a cook at Martini Beach with his ex, Roseanne Carlo (who has 17 children all named after the different regions in Italy in which they were conceived… or something… can I get a fact check?). While I am sad one of Cape May’s best-looking couples is no longer (NOW whom will I live vicariously through?) an item I am pleased they are able to remain civil, though I gently remind Mike — Rosie, who now part-times it in Roller Derby, could totally kick your ass. So, over an Old Fashioned, followed by

another Old Fashioned and followed by several more (terrible sentence, I know, but what the hell is the plural of Old Fashioned? And why an Old Fashioned? Because Jack has explicit instructions to punch me in the face any time I order a martini) we chatted up the local populace, which included the jolly Jeff Gernitis, owner of the Peter Shields Inn (or PSI as the kids are calling it) who was celebrating his 6… 34th birthday with friends. And cake! Jeff, who is recently retired from a “big defense company” said he wanted to get out “while I still felt 25 and before I woke up and found out I wasn’t.” Jeff seems a nice enough fellow, though I received no cake. Also met the lovely Viviane Rowan,

owner of White, an interior design, home furnishing, gift and jewelry shop where EVERYTHING, I’m told, is the color white (though white is actually the absence of color, but you know what I mean). I also hear that, for $100, you can get a photo of a polar bear blinking in a snowstorm. Viviane is a regular visitor to my summer Terry O’ke show in the Boiler Room with her husband Ken, who is an HPH (Hunky Pilot Husband). And even though Viviane had the audacity to think my column was the Spouty Offy, I will continue to recognize her right to exist. It was around this time Jack thought it would be “funny” to out me as a Republican. This is only ever funny to him and I have to then spend the next 45 minutes distancing myself from Tea Party-type extremists and patiently explaining which candidate in this election has the REAL extreme views on abortion (Google “Obama + partial birth abortion” and shut up about Romney already). The Brown Room was no country for young conservatives. Also met JimBob (one name, two peo-

The Undertow ? From Page 43 ple), who you can usually find hanging out at Luck Bones and are actually Bob Epaldo and Jim Schultz, both of whom seemed pleased to meet me til they found out who I was. JimBob won the big Napa Valley trip giveaway from Lucky Bones last year. Bob assured me they enjoyed ALL KINDS of wine and were not merlot snobs like Paul Giamatti in Sideways. (Confession: the sum total of my wine knowledge stems from that movie… also my attraction to Sandra Oh). Then I met Megan Lewis, who is apparently some sort of big deal in musical theatre circles (sigh… I used to be in those circles… though they were much bigger when I was in them, and ovular). Megan (NOT the server from the Lobser House Schooner) is fresh off a run in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and moving on to an off-Broadway production of Bare because she was “ready to move on” and NOT because she got tired of dodging the falling Spider-Men. Her favorite karaoke songs: To show off: “I Have Nothing”, Whitney Houston. To have fun: “99 Problems”, Jay-Z. Somewhere amidst all this I got a phone call from Good Night Irene’s, an excellent little brew pub in Wildwood, and set up a meeting this week, after which I hope to plant my Terry O’ke flag, which is like a Freak Flag, but with slightly lower production values. Stay tuned. Earlier in the evening I had made my intentions of hanging out at The Brown Room public knowledge on Facebook and discovered a cadre of coworkers were chilling at Lucky Bones. Eventually, Jeanette Higbee Dougherty, Hope Schaaf and Maggie Warner made it in to hang out with us and talk all things Morey’s Fears (they are all beautiful women, but disgusting zombies). And yes, Jeanette is one of THOSE Higbees, of nude beach infamy. She tried to explain the story behind which one of her relatives inspired the name, but I was six drinks in and only

caught what sounded like mystical claptrap about her Uncle Joe “befriending the land” or some such. I don’t know, Facebook her or something… Anyway, this trio of divas, and their pal Spunky Fuller, will be vacationing together in Turks & Caicos, which is right next to Narnia, and Xanadu for ladies on vacation together. They’ll be looking for several tan, oily cabana boys with six-pack abs for… bible study. Then some jerk from Baltimore came in and nearly ruined the whole evening. Special thanks to Diane Stopyra. It would have been humiliating to start a fight in The Brown Room. It would have been twice as humiliating to lose. To a small guy with Napoleon Complex. I’d like to thank my friends at Aart’s Taxi for making this night of debauchery possible. They’ll not only be carting me around on these biweekly or so adventures with Jack, but also to my Terry O’ke gig at the Rio and, hopefully, a few others. Aart’s is 100% DUI-proof. I keep trying to get to Elaine’s Dinner Theatre to check out Sixteen Candelabras, but artistic director Holly Knapp (Ding?) keeps saying, “Next week… no, the week after… wait, I’ll call you… we have a great show lined up for you January 1…” I kid Holly because she needs more things to be worried about. I should get in this week to see, as Holly puts it, “the A-team”, which I can only assume means no Parker Smith. (Zing!) AMC’s The Walking Dead, PBS Masterpiece’s excellent reimagining of Sherlock Holmes, and Fox’s Fringe are, without doubt, the three best shows currently being produced for television. Feel free to make an argument, but you will be wrong. Thanks for an interesting week. Don’t forget — this weekend is your LAST CHANCE to check out Morey’s Fears, and the last time Jimmy J will be filling in for me at the Rio Station (thanks, Jim, it went amazingly well). So I’ll see you at one or the other. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Inside Scoop On City Hall

P

A user’s guide to Cape May City Council meetings... by Diane Stopyra

ERHAPS it’s because everyone was gearing up for the pre-election candidate debate that happened last Thursday (see Talk of the Town on page 13), but city council’s regular meeting on the 16th was short, short, short… only about an hour long. 7:03: Call to order, Pledge of Allegiance, all that jazz. 7:04: Mayor Ed Mahaney — in a light gray suit and charcoal tie — says that the first item of business is an ordinance for consideration that would make it illegal to tether a dog in Cape May for an extended period of time, and that this has received “quite a bit of Tri-state press.” Then the woman responsible for this ordinance, Council member Deanna Fiocca (fuchsia skirt, black sweater and ankle boots), starts to talk but is stopped short by Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman (black pants, orange sweater with a baby blue collar poking out). “Speak into the mike, please,” he says. And then she does. (We know, this is a very detailed play-by-play but when the meeting is

only an hour long, your reporter is not exactly overwhelmed with writing fodder.) “I would like to add that after reviewing this and speaking to many people in town,” Fiocca says, “it should be added that no dogs should be tethered while the owner is not on the property.” This is followed by vigorous writing from all members of council. Council member Bill Murray (beige shirt and blue jacket) says, “I guess this would be enforced by someone — like a neighbor — reporting the offense. You can’t tell if someone is home just by driving by.” Touché, Bill,

touché. City Attorney Tony Monzo (dark suit) says that this will, in fact, be the case, or else the animal control folks might observe when a pup has been outside for an extended period of time. The ordinance will come up for a second reading and public hearing on September 20 at 7pm. 7:10: It’s time for resolutions! Your reporter thinks she will be home in time to catch up on the new season of Grey’s Anatomy… don’t judge! Resolutions 241 and 242 are “very positive,” according to Wichterman… Jeremy Beck and John Snyder are joining the fire department! 242 is for the approval of trick-or-treat night: Wednesday October 31 from 5 to 7pm. “So buy your candy,” Wichterman says, which elicits chuckles from the crowd. Mmm, candy. 243 is about a refund for people who paid $25 to have trees taken down, and were denied by the Shade Tree Commission. Boom! 244 is a resolution adjusting water bill

payment due to “catastrophic occurrence.” 245 is for the payment of bills. 246 is a refund for taxes that were paid twice. 247 was a late item added to the agenda. It’s the approval of a closed session immediately following this meeting in order to discuss “personnel matters.” When City Manager Bruce MacLeod first brought this up, your reporter mistakenly heard “personal” matters, which wouldn’t have been at all appropriate. 7:13: Minutes are received by the clerk! 7:14: Reports are received by the clerk! 7:15: Strawberries, chocolate-flavored peanut butter, dog food… sorry, your reporter has started on her grocery list. 7:16: It’s time for unfinished business. There is none! 7:17: It’s time for new business! City Manager Bruce MacLeod says he attended a pre-construction meeting for the Lower Cape May Meadows beach restoration project. The bid has been awarded to Weeks Marine Inc. “Work will commence as soon as they finish doing the required surveys,” MacLeod says, “with an expected completion date of mid-March, 2013.” He explains that the project will involve the pumping of 163,000 cubic yards of sand just west of the Cove beach from six and three-quarter miles offshore, through 5,000 to 6,000 feet of pipe. The project is expected to last approximately 40 working days and their may be periodic interruptions for storm or inclement weather, and an additional 16 days if various other options are exercised (aka, if the Army Corp decides more sand is needed). “I’ll keep you posted as time moves on,” MacLeod says. MacLeod adds four more things: One, that the Beach Theater Foundation has paid $39,700

back to the city to date. Two, that he attended a pre-construction meeting for the city’s upcoming road work on the north side of Cape May Avenue between Madison and Reading. (By the time you read this, work will already have begun, and it will last until approximately mid-December.) Three, that the city is one of only three municipalities to have received silver designation from the New Jersey Sustainable Organization (way to be green, Cape May!). And four, that the time to apply for the federal homestead rebate has been extended. 7:26: City Clerk Louise Cummiskey (black sweater, red scarf, black and red dress, black stockings) says that if you’re voting in the next election (and you are all voting, yes?), the county clerk should receive your ballot by mail at least seven days before election day, or by hand by 3:00 on the day prior. Also, there are free flu clinics available for anyone desiring a shot (We’re looking at you, guywho-is-hacking-up-a-lungnext-to-us). For more info, visit cmchealth.com. 7:28: Wichterman gives another update on his work to correct the city’s regional school funding problem (paying more than our fair share in taxes, based on the amount of kids attending Lower Cape May Regional High). He had a meeting with several mayors from municipalities across New Jersey who have the same problem, and he believes that “Cape May and West Cape May should be working together to try to make some sense of this thing.” Hear, hear for teamwork! 7:31: Mahaney says that Cape May recently, along with South Jersey Industries, co-

The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 50 sponsored an energy conservation meeting, which offered local businesses the opportunity to participate in energy audits, to learn how they can cut costs. “Over 30 businesses in the city attended,” he said, “and almost all signed up.” (Way to be green again, Cape May!) He then congratulates everyone involved on a successful Dragon Boat Festival at the harbor. “It’s a fall version of Harbor Fest,” he says. “There must have been 10,000 people on Delaware Avenue that day.” Then, he suggests the city enter its own boat next year, which nearly causes Fiocca to fall off her chair. “I have to be on the Lucky Bones team,” she says. Murray interjects that he doesn’t think the mayor is suggesting council members should steer the boat, but your reporter can’t help but picture Mayor Mahaney in a life vest and pair of swimmies anyway. 7:41: It’s time for the public portion. Suzanne Taylor — who works for Cape May Carriage Company and is wearing a teal top and pants we don’t notice because we’re too distracted by her pretty, flowered headband — says she used to work at an animal shelter in Florida. “I wish you could go all the way and say ‘no tethering,’” she tells council. “A tethered dog is not a happy dog, and even if someone is inside the house, it doesn’t mean they’re watching the dog.” 7:45: Marie Stone, in a purple turtleneck and corduroys, agrees. Nixing tethering altogether, she explains, will leave “no room for lawsuits or interpretation.” And besides, Cape May is not a tethering type of town. “Our animals sleep in our beds with us,” she says, “or have their own bedrooms.” Your reporter suddenly misses the world’s most adorable dog, her own Rudy. 7:47: Shaine Meier, in jeans and a black windbreaker, tells council that the pedestrian crossing sign on Lafayette Street is a little off. So are some of the

pedestrians on Lafayette Street, in our opinion. Look before you cross, people. 7:49: Bernie Haas, in hunter green pants and a white buttonup — we thinks it’s Nautica — says, “This is a great town. I’m reminded of the feral cats issue, and now we’re talking about dogs… I think it’s great.” Hmm, we sense sarcasm. Then Bernie asks the City Manager what the Beach Theater Foundation’s balance is. MacLeod doesn’t know, so Bernie asks for a ballpark figure. “Around $70,00o last time I looked,” says MacLeod, adding that he’ll do the research and report back. Bernie then asks what the heck the city is doing with the “big, yellow restroom” sitting outside Convention Hall. “We’ve been working on getting Convention Hall open and working effectively,” Mahaney responds, pretty curtly, we think, “and now we’ll address the restroom situation.” Your reporter thinks that anytime the words “restroom” and “situation” appear in the same sentence, it can’t be good. 7:50: Geroge Costich, wearing his signature suspenders over a green-checkered shirt with black pants and what looks like Velcro shoes (highly underrated), tells council that the Dragon Boats used in the recent festival are of the same construction as the canoes used by the Lenni Lenape Indians here ages ago, and that “moving forward, we should look into the history of the boats made here.” And there again is the image of Mahaney paddling in a pair of swimmies. 7:52: It’s time to go home! Here’s wishing you more treats than tricks, Cape May.

Cape May Can Be Better!

Elect RUSSELL “RUSTY” CHEW For MAYOR CITY of CAPE MAY

WHY AM I RUNNING FOR MAYOR?

BECAUSE...

Because together we can move Cape May forward! RChewCapeMay@gmail.com

H H H H H

I AM READY, WILLING, AND AVAILABLE. I’M CONFIDENT “CAPE MAY CAN BE BETTER.” OUR CITY GOVERNMENT’S ESTEEM IS AT AN ALL-TIME LOW. WE HAVE HIRED OUTSIDE PEOPLE TO ADVISE US, WHEN WE IGNORE OUR OWN EXPERTISE. I CAN HARNESS LOCAL TALENT TO ENRICH THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN OUR COMMUNITY. THIS IS MY OPPORTUNITY TO ACT AS THE COUNCIL’S CATALYST. WITH A FIVE-MEMBER COUNCIL ALL WORKING TOGETHER WE WILL NOT IGNORE THE FAULKNER ACT.

Before retirement I spent 25 years as a Cape May police officer, making me exempt from entering political office. Now I am eligible, willing, able, and available to serve my community. I grew up here, went to school here, worked in public service here, own property here, continue to volunteer as a fireman for over 32 years, and, most importantly, I raised a family here. I now have the next generation of family living here and I want to ensure that they will have the same or better opportunities that I had. I’ve been witness to a lifetime of changes, progress, and failures. I am committed to making a difference and I believe “Cape May Can Be Better.” I am asking for your vote on Tuesday, November 6th. mechanical owl. The very next morning the town rang to the noise of copper being beaten, glass blown, furnaces fired and rubber poured. The collected genius that went into the device was nothing short of uncanny, and that, I fear, is where we went a little bit askew. The finished object was a marvel: 10-feet tall, gleaming chrome and brass and copper with wings of articulated steel beaten so thin it was translucent, claws of ivory and rubber, a beak of aged mahogany tipped with brass and eyes of pearl and ruby.

Its innards throbbed from a powerful steam engine and its senses were acute. The only problem was, it lacked a brain, a sense of self, if you will. And that is where we made the mistake of trusting another Scotch rogue, Aleister Crowley, who swore he could “tune it in to cosmic energy”. Well, we left him to it and so came the unveiling at Halloween, when we whisked the blanket off to oohs and aahs. We thought maybe the bird would flap its wings and answer some questions. Instead, it took off through the wall, dragging poor Brunel with it. Well, we retrieved Brunel, but never had control of the owl. Crowley admitted he had been pushed for time and so had topped up the internal mix of “good” and “wise” with some “evil” he’d had lying around. Since that day, once a year the Owl needs to feed and refuel, and will soar above our city, stooping to snatch a random citizen for both purposes. We of course have a few Wildwooders tied to lamp-posts for just such a purpose, but still, it pays to be cautious when out and about.

ID I ever tell you about Cape May’s Hallowe’en Owl? I think not — it’s a scary tale, not for the faint-hearted. But there are things, friends, that you must know of — deep dark secrets, terrible deeds, unspeakable evils — but enough of Ocean City. Where was I? Ah yes, the Cape May Owl. Well, it was in the Victorian Era, when things mechanical and scientific were all the rage. I was having a party in honor of Cleverness, and the best guests were there: Thomas Edison, Karl Benz, Chris Sholes, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and others. We had had a fair amount of malt and were forecasting all of the major technological inventions of the centuries to come, when someone said that all we had left to conquer was nature itself, and it was a matter of time before that happened. Suddenly a great owl swept across the porch and lifted the hairpiece right off his bald pate, carrying it off. We laughed, of course, and blows were exchanged, but when all was settled we knew we had our challenge: to build a

The Answer Lady

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My girlfriend and I have been together about a year now and it’s been mostly great. However, we’re on different pages politically, and we’ve had quite a few lively arguments during this election year. Sometimes, though, when we do argue, it feels like she’s trying to change me. I feel like I am the way I am and people should just deal with it. Why should I have to change who I am or what I believe to suit her – or anybody else? — Stubborn Gentle Reader There is nothing like a “lively” political discussion to point up the differences between people. It seems unlikely to the Answer Lady that your lady-love is trying to “change” you as is she is trying to “persuade” you. “Change” is a word that tends to make people panic, and they tend to instinctively fight it. But sometimes people — and the

Wise answers to perplexing questions

universe, for that matter — are not demanding that we change, but that we adapt. Surely your girlfriend is not asking you to completely alter your behavior, your personality, what you order when you go to the Pilot House (a burger, always, for the Answer Lady)? Sometimes having opposing viewpoints provides a positive type of tension in a relationship. (Tension — there is another unnecessarily vilified concept — my goodness, where would we be without sexual tension? But the Answer Lady digresses.) By the way, you did

not ask, but the Answer Lady believes that relationships can withstand opposing political viewpoints, but she is not so sure they can withstand one partner proclaiming “this is the way I am — deal with it.” You say that “being this way… always worked” in your previous relationships. But had they always worked, they wouldn’t be “previous,” would they? Dear Answer Lady Why do people turn into lunatics during an election year? I have actually de-friended relatives and friends on Facebook because of their political rants. I’ll certainly resume my friendships with them after the election, but in the meantime… ugh — it’s obnoxious. Thoughts? — Over It Dear Over Is that you, Terry O’Brien? Facebook makes communication — for better, for worse — much faster and easier. The obnoxious person you would normally just avoid now is right there on your screen. So, yes — block those who offend your political sensibilities if it will save your blood pressure. The good news is the election is but days away.

What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you? I am Karen McPheeters [center], and I’m here with my daughter Kris, granddaughter Brithy, and grand-granddaughter Macy, who is three months old. Where are you from? Detroit, originally, but I moved to Cape May a few years ago to be closer to the ocean. What do you do? I am a physical therapy assistant at North Cape Center. What were you doing when we interrupted? Waiting for my girls... they were shopping! Next... Cape May Winery. The theme of this week’s Exit Zero is Owl-O-Ween. Are you a birder? Well, I like to watch the ones who feed from the little bird feeder in my yard. Interview by Gabi Urda PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

Meet Mocha, Cape May’s Pit Bull Ambassador

«

MOCHA has been making her way through our charmed city, in order to let people know that the pitt bull reputation is often unfounded. Here, she takes a break from melting the hearts of Cape Mayniacs to rest with her guardian, Rich Flanegan, on their West Cape May stoop. (Okay, so she’s still melting hearts on the stoop.) Mocha’s mission is to draw attention to National Pit Bull Awareness Day, which is October 27. The event is sponsored by the Animal Alliance of Cape May County and the Gail Pierson Gallery. Do you have a favorite photo of a pit bull? Please email Joan @ joanbob11@ verizon.net for information about the It’s The Pits photo contest and art exhibit.

Activity Of The Week

Y

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Owl-O-Ween

OU are in the birding capital of the world during the season of the supernatural, so show some respect to the most magical of birds — the owl. While you’re checking out Scarecrow Alley at MAC (through November 4 at the Physick Estate), trick-or-treating with your little monsters on the Washington Street Mall on October 21 (noon — 2 p.m.), or going door to door on Halloween from 5 — 7, scan the skies for one of Cape May’s owls. Owls, birds of the order Strigiformes, with small beaks and wide faces, have long been associated with magic. Hedwig, Harry Potter’s snowy owl, is only the most recent example. Some cultures believe an owl brings luck — the ancient Bretons believed owls foretold a good harvest, and Afghan stories credit the owl with bringing flint, and therefore fire, to humans. Russian hunters carried owl claws with them so that they could claw their way into heaven, and the Chinese once credited owls with protecting them from lightning. Inuits relied on them for guidance — a sort of natural

Whoooo you looking at? GPS system. Clerics are fond of owls, inviting them to nest in churches and temples to keep mice at bay... Cape May residents who battle voles can relate. In addition to credit, owls get some blame. In the Republic of Cameroon, the owl was so terrifying it was referred to as the “bird you must not name,” a tidbit JK Rowling may have encountered, along with the Roman superstition that witches used owls to communicate. Romans also blamed owls for the deaths of infants, and because

only owls could co-exist with ghosts, an owl on the property was proof that your place was haunted. (Look for owls at the Physick Estate, on the Spellbound tour, Wednesdays and Fridays in October.) Sailors who dream of owls are destined to be shipwrecked. Hearing an owl hoot while in labor means that your child is a witch. Owls seem to invite the otherworldly speculation. Their wide-eyed, all-seeing gazes and their solitary, nocturnal habits add to their mystery. A group of owls — a rare thing, apparently — is called a “parliament,” and the creatures who flock to Cape May to see the owls are called “birders.” The Birders are back for the Cape May Autumn Birding Festival (October 26-28), and many of the festival’s events — and many of the town’s hotel rooms — are already sold out. The Autumn Birding Festival features exhibits at Convention Hall, workshops with celebrities from the birding world, field trips, boat tours, booksignings, and live demos of owls (along with hawks and eagles). Best thing about your job? If I can’t throw a party for myself, then I want to throw it for someone else. I can do that in this job. What’s your OTHER dream job? TESS is a medium-sized female Shepherd mix who’s a sweet, senior dog. She was brought to the shelter as a stray who happened to be walking down the street. She is good with cats, dogs and kids but she is older and has some physical limitations so she needs to be cared for in a quiet, calm home. Tess will have all her vaccinations brought current and will be micro-chipped. The adoption fee is only $8.

«

OLLIE is an intelligent two-year-old Pit Bull who came to the shelter as a stray, and he has an exceptionally sweet disposition. He really loves going for walks, running and getting attention. He needs an owner who can give him the training and exercise that will keep him happy and healthy, and he won't do well with other pets! Make Ollie your exercise buddy and run off into the sunset together. The adoption fee is $95.

«

Z IS a one-and-a-half-year-old lab/ shepherd mix with a zest for life who’s currently residing at the shelter. He’s a funloving boy who can at times be on the boisterous side... but that’s just because he wants to play. He will need some leash training because he has lots of energy and exuberance. Because of his size and power, he must go to a home with children aged 10 and up. The adoption fee is $95.

GARDEN is a lovable gal who appreciates nothing more than attention! She does have a little trouble getting along with other cats, so she'd probably do best as your only one, but when you see how much love she has to give, it will be more than worth it. Garden is spayed and up-to-date on vaccines. The adoption fee is only $35!

«

IBIS is waiting with brother, Ink, for a home. They were brought in with their litter, and everyone else has been adopted. When Ibis first arrived, he had an eye infection that has not hindered his sight, just left him with a little odd-looking scar tissue... it's character! Other than that, he's just a happy guy. For both cats, the adoption fee is $70.

PALOMA has been waiting for a home since August. It's surprising no one has scooped her up yet, as she's so energetic and full of love. She came to the shelter with a severe ear injury, and now she only has one ear... but she's just as sweet for it. Paloma loves to be pet, and could spend all day with you! The adoption fee is only $20.

A Halloween Treat At The Theatre ADVERTISING FEATURE

O

NLY three chances remain to see The Belle of Amherst. Audiences have been calling Barbara Dana’s performance touching and luminous. Like the character she plays, Dana is only here for a short while, so don't miss it! Previewing on Halloween, we’re pleased to present Poe, Times Two. A double-bill of short, one-man plays adapted from two of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic stories of mystery and horror — “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Black Cat” — Poe, Times Two will make your Halloween that much creepier! In “The Cask of Amontillado,” an Italian nobleman, Montresor, narrates a chilling tale of revenge involving his friend, Fortunato, against whom he has carried a grudge for an offense that is never fully explained. He leads his friend through the catacombs

Above: Barbara Dana portrays Emily Dickinson — and fifteen other characters — in The Belle of Amherst. Below: Greg Oliver Bodine in a scene from Poe, Times Two. under his palazzo, enticing him to drink along the way, reminding him of the motto on his family’s crest: Nemo me impune lacessit (No one insults me with impunity). Montresor and Fortunato eventually make their way to the celebrated cask of Amontillado, and Fortunato’s fortune is sealed. In “The Black Cat,” a condemned man speaks from his prison cell on the night before he is to be executed for the brutal murder of his wife. Poe’s masterful study of domestic violence, guilt and one man’s descent into madness, “The Black Cat” is a journey that illustrates the ability of the human mind to observe and comment on its own destruction, while being powerless to stop it. Poe, Times Two runs less than two weeks: Thursdays-Saturdays, at 8pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm! That means there are only 18 chances to see the Master

Bird Droppings

O

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

VER the course of every human life there are epic events. First breath. Check. First ride on a roller coaster. Check. First kiss. Check. First new car. Check. First Cape May Birding Festival. Cape May Birding Festival? Precisely. If you have never treated yourself to New Jersey Audubon’s annual celebration of all things natural in Cape May then you, my Cape May loving friend, are going through life with one card short of a winning hand. Before some surrogate places a CHECK next to “Last Breath” you really owe it to yourself to turn out October 26-28, aka this weekend, and see what all the fun is about. Discover why Cape May is North America’s favorite famous bird-watching destination. At the very least, a trip through the Convention Center will get you an in-yourface looks at live birds of prey (hawks and owls) and live wolves. Wolves? Owls? Uh huh. It is, after all, Owl-o-ween weekend. Or perhaps Howl-o-ween.

Okay. That was pretty stupid. But there is nothing stupid or silly about a Convention Center filled with booths catering to all things birds. Artists, optic’s manufacturers, publishers, tour companies... You don’t have to pre-register for anything. Just show up and pay at the door. For adults, it’s just $5, 5 small ones; speaking of small ones, admission is $2 for kids under 12

and free if they are five and under. That’s less than it cost for that first ride on a roller coaster! I’m going to assume that the first kiss was free. And it you get swept up in the bird festival mania and want to find out exactly why tens of thousands of people come to Cape May every year just to watch birds, it’s going to cost you much less than the price of that new car. In fact, less than the cost of used bicycle and way less than a new one. You can sign up for bird walks, programs right at Convention Hall, and a day or more of the festival’s array of indoor and outdoor events. You don’t have binoculars? That’s easily fixed. The top manufacturers will be at Convention Hall. You can test drive the planets most coveted optics (and maybe catch a bit of seabird migration right out on the deck overlooking the ocean.). Late October is the peak of fall bird migration. Tens of thousands of migrating sea ducks (not to mention loons, gannets, and other sea birds) will be speeding along, just offshore. At the Hawk Watch at Cape

Bird Droppings ? From Page 101 May Point State Park, the byword will be — Golden Eagle. Yep. Late October is also prime time for migrating Golden Eagles as well as other birds of prey. With luck, as many as 15 raptor species might be seen. And if the weekend coincides with the passage of a cold front, watch out! It is more than possible to record over 200 species of birds. Of course you need to identify them. That’s where the experts at New Jersey Audubon come in. In fact, included in the mix of special guests are people who write field guides. People like Kevin Karlson, Michael O’Brien, Clay Sutton... even David Sibley, author of The Sibley Guide to Birds. The 66th Annual Cape May Birding Festival. The day Autumn and Audubon showcase all that is great about natural Cape May. October 26-28. Beach Avenue in Cape May. Check! In the meantime, head over to CMBO, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point; it’s THE place for all of your nature needs. For your shopping convenience, the Cape May Bird Observatory is open seven days a week from 9:30 am to 4:30pm. You can ask the staff for help, and

You’ll see both wolves and birds of prey, like the pretty regal-looking hawk above, at the 66th Annual Cape May Birding Festival this weekend, October 26-28 you can pick up a FREE birding map and checklist. While you are there, scan the bookshelves for some bargains in the used and vintage books section (maybe even a slightly used field guide for the kitchen counter), look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory (which is FREE when you become a member), or pick up some of the newest HAWKS in Flight clothing for your wardrobe. Or just browse around; I’m sure something will catch your eye. If it’s nice, sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds and the view of

Lake Lily. If you can’t make it to Cape May, you’ll just have to let your fingers do the birding online at BirdCapeMay.org or call 609884-2736. We do mail order, too! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

We’ve had the same Father Christmas since the beginning. He remembers kids from the year before. A 12-year-old girl, who’s been coming since she was two, came again this year. Her mother told us that because of our Father Christmas, this young girl still believes in Santa. —Hilary Pritchard, owner of Whale’s Tale
