Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

Following Sandy ON SUNDAY evening, as the weather began turning for the worse and the wind whipped through the mostly deserted streets of Cape May, we went for dinner at The Blue Pig Tavern at Congress Hall, which one of our photographers nervously joked might be a “last supper.”

Like all other hotels on the island, Congress Hall should have been dead. But members of the press from all over the world were gathered here, and as we ate our meal in front of the fireplace, surrounded by boarded-up windows, we watched reporters, producers, and cameramen prepare for their 11pm broadcasts, downloading information on their phones from the National Weather Service and their parent stations. The hotel’s owner and managing partner of Cape Resorts Group, Curtis Bashaw, was also in the dining room, and he told us that representatives from ABC National, ABC Nightline, NBC 10, NBC National, CNBC, Fox 29, and even Walter Cronkite’s son Chip from the Associated Press, had checked in this day.

We knew that Hurricane Sandy was major news, but we weren’t expecting so many of the big guns to have hit town. We stopped by the next table over, where three guys from the ABC affiliate in Chicago had just ordered a couple of house salads. They explained that they’d been in Atlantic City, but because of logistics which included the location of a satellite truck, they’d decided to set up camp in Cape May instead, and they couldn’t be happier about it. “We’ve never covered a disaster in greater comfort,” said reporter Ben Bradley. “We came from a no-tell-motel in Atlantic City. Now, we’re shocked and slightly spoiled. I almost tweeted a picture, but then I thought people might think we were making light of the hurricane.”

His producer, Ross Weidner, added that he felt underdressed. “I’m wearing a hat!” he said.

We wanted to know why a state 852 miles away would care so much about Sandy they’d send three journalists to cover it. Or why Miami-based Univision had sent seven employees, the ones chatting away in Spanish over the noise of a laptop broadcast from the Cove that they’d brought along to dinner.

Or why a Belgium news station would send their reporters, who’d already had their hands full filming a documentary about the election in Manhattan. “It’s a lead story,” Ross Weidner said. “Our main and only purpose is public service. Forecasting hurricanes is an imprecise science. We’re 24 hours from landfall, and we can’t be sure exactly where it will touch down.

You can’t call this hype. This storm is huge, and the impact will be as well.”

About this time, we made our way into The Brown Room, where we sat on the couch with the crew of ABC’s Nightline, including coanchor and award-winning correspondent Terry Moran, and sipped on dark and stormy cocktails — naturally. Here, the crowd was more mixed between locals and reporters, and we could overhear all the worries of a town full of uncertainty. Curtis announced that the pressure –which correlates to a storm’s wind speed – had dropped to 950, and that the lowest recorded previously had been 962, eliciting “what’s that mean?” whispers from those nearby. Viviane Rowan told us how she’d spent the day sandbagging White, her interior design shop on Ocean Street. Someone else mentioned that the lawn of Peter Shields Inn was already flooded. From a television next to the bar, we caught words like “devastation” and “demolish.”

But for all of the worry around us, there

was a sense of camaraderie, too. A feeling of being in it together. One of Congress Hall’s food and beverage managers, Jordan Rowan, told us he’d be working until 7am, because the bar and restaurant were staying open around the clock in order to support the media. Brian Lee, who’d arrived at the hotel in a snorkeling mask, picked up an acoustic guitar and began singing “Lean on Me” next to the fire. His girlfriend and fellow snorkeler Eliza Lotozo offered us the use of her shower, in case we lose water. Earlier, Debra Donahue, a neighbor on Stimpson Lane, had handed over some of her homemade black bean soup to help us keep warm. All over, neighbors were asking about the well-being of neighbors, offering food and sympathy and support.

“You know,” Terry Moran told us, when we asked what it’s like being the guy heading into the danger when everyone else is heading out, “doing this job, you tend to see the best in people and you see the worst. Storms tend to bring out the best.”

We couldn’t agree more.

A Matter Of Honesty THERE doesn’t seem to be a Chinese proverb about why you should never trust a man who has to tell you he’s honest. But we think there should be. Especially when that man happens to be a politician who is looking for your vote.

We studied the ad that Ed Mahaney, the incumbent mayor of Cape May, ran in a local paper last week. One of the five points he made was… “Ed is honest, independent, and hardworking!” (The exclamation point is his.) We have been dealing with Ed for four years now and have butted heads on several occasions. Of

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 all the descriptions we could apply to him, honest is not the first that springs to mind. Hardworking, yes. We hear we spends a good deal of time in City Hall, but that isn’t anything he should be commended upon, since it is not the mayor’s job to be burning the midnight oil on Washington Street.

But let’s get back to that word… honest. And let’s go back to August, 2009, when Mayor Mahaney (accompanied by a reluctant construction official) took it upon himself to trespass on a rental property on Maryland Avenue and tell a couple who were renting the house as part of their weekend wedding that the swimming pool in the yard had code violations. When the husband told the mayor he had no right to be there, he was told, “‘This isn’t over. If I hear any more complaints I will have a police car sitting here all week if I have to. I’m the mayor of Cape May and I get things done my way.”

Obviously, there are so many things wrong with this.

First of all, the mayor has no legal right to trespass on private property, just as no other ordinary citizen does. And even if there WAS a code violation, that is not the purview of the mayor. And if there WAS an issue, that’s for

the appropriate city official to take up with the OWNER of the property, not the renters.

The couple were so infuriated that the police were called. An officer arrived and escorted a very irritated Mayor Mahaney off the premises. The mayor was so enraged that he responded by asking Cape May’s Chief of Police Diane Sorantino to institute an official report into the officer’s actions.

We received a very detailed account of what happened that day from the woman who was renting the house. We also spoke to several people closely involved with the proceedings.

When we discussed the matter with the mayor at the time, he denied that he had trespassed, saying he had been invited on to the property by the couple. He also denied that he had made a complaint to the police, saying that the department itself had decided to make an investigation into the officer’s conduct.

We can say with a good deal of certainty that the mayor lied on both counts. And in fact we said so at the time, and received for our trouble a threatening letter from the city’s solicitor, Tony Monzo, who asked for a full retraction. We refused and told the solicitor we would be happy to take this to court, so confident were we in the sources who spoke to us.

We never heard another peep.

Why did the mayor act this way? Most likely because a friend of his, a county judge,

lives next to the property involved and had reportedly made several complaints in the past about the noise coming from the pool.

And why are we regurgitating an old story?

Because we think that incident was an excellent illustration of the mayor’s character. An often devious and petty man with an outsized ego who gets a kick out of calling himself the mayor, even though that job title just isn’t what it used to be – not since the Faulkner Act downgraded the role to just another member of council, with the only perks being the pleasure of running council meetings, and marrying people.

In that same newspaper ad we referred to at the beginning of this story, Ed Mahaney also claims he “cares about, and addresses your concerns!” But during his four-year reign, he has dissembled a number of important committees containing some of the brightest, most creative people in town, and often times in a manner lacking grace or, dare we say it, honesty. We know of two hotel operators (it would probably be fair to say they are the two most successful businessmen in town) who were told by Ed that they would be keeping their seats on the old Tourism Commission — only to be told, in subsequent letters, that their services were no longer required.

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 mitted to preserving the character” of Cape May — yet he has presided over a council that erected vinyl railings along Beach Avenue, even though that is a material that (quite rightly) no homeowner can use in their homes in this Historic Landmark City. And what about the big digital sign on Convention Hall? Can you imagine what would happen to a business that tried to pull off that kind of affront? Ask the owner of the Peter Shields Inn, who was almost tarred and feathered for trying to make a subtle font change to his elegant wooden sign.

And what about those vinyl monstrosities on the harbor bridge? Another pet project of Ed’s. There was such an uproar when those were erected that the mayor promised that they would be taken down. Never happened.

Another example of the mayor talking out of both sides of his mouth.

At the Candidates’ Night last week, Ed said that he had been responsible for bringing the National Parks Service to town this summer to discuss the fact that the city’s National Historic Landmark designation was in jeopardy. The truth is that Cape May has been on the watch list since 2002 and that the 2012 review had been set in the National Park Service’s sched-

ule at that time, as part of their 10-year review.

Their visit had nothing to do with the mayor — his attempt to take credit for Cape May being taken off the watch list is risible.

And then there is the matter of Temple University, Ed’s alma mater. Three city contracts, worth more than $100,000, have been awarded to the school, without any apparent attempt to invite bids from universities (or companies) in this county — or even this state.

Ed told a former council member a couple years ago that the city HAD asked other schools in New Jersey to bid for the work, but never produced the relevant paperwork, despite promising that he would.

Finally, there is the matter of Ed Mahaney breaching the laws of the state by doing, in effect, the work of the City Manager. Over the last few years, we have shown enough examples of this that it has turned into perhaps the most important issue in this election. It seems clear that Bruce MacLeod, who was appointed City Manager as Ed Mahaney was taking office, is in the pocket of the mayor. This is not how city business is supposed to be done.

We are skimping on the details in this column, because we don’t want to rehash all of the many stories we have published over the years, but suffice to say we believe that Ed Mahaney is unfit for office and is not deserving of your vote.

In his opposite corner is a man who we believe will be a refreshing addition to city council. Rusty Chew’s ads state that he is “ready, willing and available,” that he wants to “harness local talent to enrich the quality of life in our community”, that “our city government’s esteem is at an all-time low,” and that council has to be “working together.”

We regard Rusty, who served in the Cape May Police Department for 25 years, as a straightforward guy. He tells it like it is. Rusty doesn’t want to sneak into City Hall every night to work on his own agendas and he doesn’t want to tell the City Manager what to do, and when to do it. He wants the City Manager to be given the chance to show he CAN run the city and he wants all five council members to have an equal say in what is going on in the city.

We likely wouldn’t agree on every issue with Rusty. When we asked him if he agreed that Cape May needs more bike lanes, he said, “No, I don’t think it does. I think people need to use their common sense. Lafayette Street is not a safe place to ride your bike, so why do it?” We at Exit Zero happen to believe that Cape May COULD use more bike-friendly laws, but we appreciate that Rusty tells it like it is, and we expect this brand of honesty and candor when

A vote for Rusty would be a vote for democracy and would allow Cape May the opportunity to once again encourage proper community participation, allowing the brightest and the best to help the city tackle the complex issues of the day, and would allow city council to proceed with its business without being compromised by hidden agendas.

Maybe it’s the fact that this column is being written as we anticipate one of the worst storms in decades, but we can’t help seeing Wizard of Oz allusions here. After the adventures and dramas of the last four years we are hoping that once the post-election dust settles in Cape May, on the morning of November 7, we, like Dorothy, can feel once again that “there’s no place like home.”

Costume Drama WHILE we probably should have been sandbagging EZ Global Headquarters and taking other hurricane-related precautions, we pulled on our superhero costumes and headed for the Phantom Ball at Congress Hall. The ballroom was decorated in accordance with



the creepy fairytales theme — think of a rotted-flesh Rapunzel and various other members of the storybook undead. And the guests were impressively done up as well...

We ran into Art Bruschetti, the vampire dubbed “sexiest man” at last year’s ball, and we asked if he was nervous about defending his title. “I think the judges had beer goggles on last year,” he said. “It’s time to pass the torch.” But his witch of a wife (ha!), Pauline, told us differently. “Don’t listen to him,” she said. “He wants to win.” But, at the awards ceremony later on, this claim to fame went to Rico Hemenway who dressed as a Mariachi Mama with especially lovely breasts, we might add.

We have to give props to Rico’s girlfriend Mary Smith for her creativity — she was a particularly putrid “Moldilocks,” a costume we think tops the year she came as Mrs Bubbles in a homemade shower.

But one of our favorite outfits was the inspiration of Rich Nowakowski, who came as artist Victor Grasso. Actually, he called himself a “fat” Victor Grasso, but we think he looked damn good. Except that Rich had four buttons on his plaid shirt undone, and the real-life Victor says he only undoes three from the top, and occasionally one on the bottom, “unless the shirt is tucked.”

We’d like to note that when we called to ask Victor about these buttoning habits, he never even questioned why.

We’d also like to note that your reporter did not win the sexiest female award... that went to the OTHER catwoman, Zoya Soloeyeva from Russia, who was wearing almost exactly the same outfit. But not to fear… no catfight ensued. At least not this time, Zoya, but we better not catch your leather jumpsuitclad self around these parts again.

What was NOT a joke was how many Mad Hatters came out this night… four by our count. “It’s always a popular choice,” said costume judge Little Wayne, aka Cape Resorts concierge Dan Murphy. One of the hatters, Chris Runyan from York, Pennsylvania, told us he took two weeks to make his ensemble, which included a poster-board hat. “It’s a good look for me,” he told us, “because I’m a little bit crazy myself.”

We’d like to thank all of the “little bit crazy” folks who came out on Friday, especially the guy who dressed as Moses’ burning bush and the couple who sported open-back hospital gowns and fake butts. Thanks for an entertaining evening, one which we chose to end at The Ebbitt Room bar, where we enjoyed some cocktails while still in costume, because we’re just a little bit crazy, too.



LOWER Cape May Regional junior Morgan Hart is an allaround great student-athlete. The daughter of Jeff and Barb Hart of Cape May, Hart is a key player on both the varsity field hockey and lacrosse teams, while also being a standout honors and AP student.

Hart stays focused as she juggles her academic and athletic challenges. Her academic schedule is jam-packed with rigorous courses, and she recently found out that she is eligible to apply for LCMR’s chapter of National Honor Society. She is also a member of the Future Business Leaders of America Club.

“I like to stay on the ball, and I know how to get things done. I make schedules in my head,” said Hart.

Hart is very enthusiastic both in the classroom and on the athletic field. She enjoys her AP English class the most, however, and credits her teacher, Ms. Siscone, as being very influential to her academic progress.

Hart’s plans for the future are undecided; however, she knows that she would like to attend college in either Maryland or Virginia, while also continuing her sports career at the club level in order to stay active and make friends.

The Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever

G

REETINGS all… assuming we have lived through the hurricane. As I write to you (5:46pm Sunday) Sandy has yet to make landfall but the ominous signs of impending doom (the Mayans were right!) are mounting; speeches from governors, tolls waived on highways, the Eagles losing… no wait, that’s normal.

And, the gravest sign of all, reporters from the Media Industrial Complex (my disdain for the media is second only to my disdain for Disney Channel sitcoms) dotting the promenades of every shore town from Cape May to North Cape May. I know the last few of these things we’ve been through have been duds (remember the relentless hype around Irene?) my gut tells me this one is going to be different, a real kick in the pants. And by the time you read this I guess we’ll know.

Had date night again this week with EZ honcho Jack Wright (I have been out on more dates with him in the last three weeks than I have with my wife in the last

11 years) at Cabanas. Why Cabanas, you might ask? Put a sock in it and I’ll tell you, I might answer. They were having their “Are You Smarter Than A Bartender” contest, and since I’m loathe to miss an opportunity to prove myself unsurpassed in the retention of trivial things, Cabanas it was.

Unfortunately, a couple hours prior, I consumed half of a tuna hoagie from Del Pizza in the Breakwater Plaza, North Cape May. It wasn’t until six bites in that I realized it was made with green peppers. Green peppers and my digestive tract get along like the Hatfields and McCoys. So it was with the anticipation of searing gas pain and many trips to public bathrooms that I hit the town.

But lucky for everyone that passed within 20 feet of me that night, it never came to pass.

Until the next morning. But my wife and kids are used to it.

Green peppers aside, Del Pizza is a hidden little gem. While the sandwiches we ordered were not particularly elegant, they were tasty and, adding in a pizza, fries and drinks we got out at a little over $30, which proved a nice palette cleanser a week after $13 cheeseburgers and $7 root beers at Oktoberfest . Everything at Del’s is good, but the highlight is the pizza.

I headed into Cape May in my Aart’s Taxi chariot, and bellied up to the bar ready to flex my brains. Halfway into a Guinness I decided to head up to Martini Beach so that Mike DeMusz and Roseanne Carlo could lavish me with praise and hugs for the hilarious things I wrote about them last week. But, uh, turns out Mike wanted to stuff me into a trash can (Zach Smith wanted to help) but, unlike me, Mike has a nice side, so he made his feelings known then joined me for a beer.

Duly chastised, I headed back to Cabanas, where Frank Holland and Jen Basara were on duty. Jen has a colorful nickname that I shall not print at her request and because I’m a little terrified of everybody right now.

Frank once survived a drunken browbeating from me during a desultory Eagles playoff loss (is there another kind?) some years back (Jeff Garcia?) on the same night I kept telling Victor Grasso I wanted to punch him in the face. But, in my defense, who doesn’t want to punch Victor Grasso in the face?

During my second Guinness I was told they were cancelling “Bartender” for lack of business (there was only myself and a half-dozen Coasties who were terrible at billiards), so my intellectual superiority went unchallenged. So I settled in to watch the World Series (Detroit Tigers-San Francizzzzzzzzzz) and waited for my date.

With nothing to engage me I chatted up an unsuspecting couple who thought they were only stopping in for nachos, unaware a desperate columnist was on the hunt for material, so I badgered Kurt and Mirian (last name withheld upon request) from Wayne, PA who were down to look at some birds. (I don’t get it. Doesn’t mean it isn’t cool, I just don’t get it. Like I don’t get why anybody can listen to more than three seconds of the Grateful Dead.) Shockingly, they’ve been coming to Cape May for 20 years and had never heard of Exit Zero and The Undertow, which I remedied by giving them 12 copies, all turned to page 43.

This is their favorite time of year because it’s quieter and cooler, echoing the sentiment of anyone that has ever lived here.

With SOMEONE ELSE. Sauntering in as if they hadn’t just kept me waiting an hour (okay, Jack told me he’d be late, but it’s more dramatic this way, trust me), Jack Wright and Diane

Stopyra (Are they a couple?

Are they friends? Does anyone care?) with Viviane and Ken Rowan. If you’ll recall, he’s the HPH (Hunky Pilot Husband), Jack is the SMP (Sexy Magazine Publisher) and I’m the FC (Fat Columnist). Jack made up those last two and I am not pleased with them at all.

We proceeded socializing, which I’m bad at, and I told the story of where the tradition of clinking glasses came from (Nordic Viking kings would do so to splash some of their drink into the other’s glass, thus ensuring if one got poisoned, both got poisoned) and Jack said something pissy about not being able to tell if your brake light is out. Or he was ordering fish tacos. Who can tell with that accent? (I’m sure his TEDx presentation was TOTALLY intelligible…). But he did make the valid argument that the phrase “It’s all downhill from here” is, at best, confusing and, at worst, completely wrong. You may discuss, I don’t have the energy to give a damn.

Favorite Song of the Week: “Little Talks” by Of Gods & Monsters. Ken Rowan and I played smart phone Shazam roulette to figure out who it was. He won.

But mine’s bigger!

The five of us then shuffled down to The Brown Room for a nightcap. While there a gentleman kept approaching me, insisting we’d met the previous year at the Phantom Ball where he was dracula, but then figured out he was mistaking me for Victor Grasso. HA! Pretty good day for me. Pretty bad day for Victor.

The night ended with an awkward moment in the men’s room (Jack asking me to “look at this”) and the two of us speaking only in Christian Bale/Batman voices, which is harder than it sounds. I could do these date nights every night if I didn’t want to live past 43 and Jack was a millionaire. If you’d like us to come hang out at your place one of these weeks drop us a line.

We’re relatively well-behaved and we put asses in the seats! ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

A letter to the people of Cape May from Rusty Chew

I

T has been my privilege to visit a great number of you in your homes during the past few weeks — particularly as a fellow resident, not as a police officer there to bring unwanted news or conduct an investigation.

It is interesting to note that this election may indeed be a referendum on our form of government. I have tried to inform the residents of our community that the Mayor is disregarding the laws that apply to his elected position — N.J.S.A. 40:69A-87. Specifically, the Mayor as defined by this law is a member of council with only certain privileges as clearly defined (perform marriages and chairman of council). The law further clearly defines the powers of council, instructing they not interfere with any subordinate of the manager, publicly or privately. N.J.S.A. 40:69A-88/40:69A-91 provides that any conviction of a violation(s) of this chapter shall give cause for removal from office.

Most of the residents I have visited agree that the Mayor DOES meet frequently with the City Manager, without the approval of council. They agree that he has daily contact with department heads and other subordinates of the manager, often taking it upon himself to arrange and attend meetings between the manager, contractors, engineers, lawyers, vendors and other individuals who do business with the city.

Some people believe that these ARE the responsibilities of the Mayor. In order for voters to make a responsible choice, they have a duty to inform themselves of the facts. Are we obeying the state laws or breaking them? Do our leaders have a responsibility to obey the law or should they be able to pick and choose the ones that they like and disregard the ones that they don’t like? Should persons in positions of authority be able to use that authority to embarrass, intimidate or retaliate against anyone who exercises their right to question decisions or choices that they are making on behalf of the people? Do we challenge our elected officials to keep the elements of the “Oath of Office” (uphold the Constitution of the United States, Laws of the State of New Jersey and the Ordinances of the City of Cape May) that they agreed to as they raised their right hand and were SWORN into office?

If you are willing to vote for someone who has, for the last 25 years, upheld the oath that he was sworn to uphold and who will continue to do the same as an elected official, I am ready, willing and able.

Finally, I have heard a question from the public that I head to Florida every winter. The next time that I go to Florida for the winter will be the first time. I intend to take short vacations there, as I always have. Remember, we are owners and operators of local businesses that require attendance and attention, even in winter! Anyone who tells you that I intend to serve from Florida is repeating a lie that is obviously intended to discredit.

Vacation is not a violation of the law! It is acceptable and healthy behavior to get out, spend time with your family and friends and get some fresh air. Go for a walk and get to know your neighbors. Grab your fishing pole or field glasses and head to the beach. This is Cape May. I love this town, and I know you do, too. I look forward to continuing to serve this town with dedication.

I hope you will vote for me on November 6 and help bring back proper governance to our city.

Cape May Elementary achieved the silver level of the

«Healthier US School Challenge because of the school’s efforts to improve student health through exercise and healthy eating.

This has been a school-wide effort for the last several years. In 2009, Cape May Elementary recieved a grant for the NJ Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, but since them, the district and parents have been keeping the program going. We especially love the school-operated garden on campus. The district’s efforts to promote health, however, don’t stop with nutrition. A pool has been added to the school, and lunch has been moved to after recess, which is a recommendation of the national program. Cape May Elementary is one of only 50 schools in the state to have met at least one level of the challenge.

The Old Fogey

LIKE dogs, in the same way I like automatic weapons and powerful opiates: they are dear to my heart but when not in supervised use should be kept locked away in a secure cabinet.

Indeed, I am unsure which of those three I would consider the more dangerous.

And before you look over at your pampered pug as it sits on a cushion, slavering and licking its private parts, or express your outrage at my opinion, consider two things... (a) I have had my faithful Yorkie, Young Albert (and his forebears) at my side for more years than I can count, and owe my life to him a dozen times over, yet still when I hear him leap up on the bed at night to snuffle and pass wind explosively, I make sure I have a stout stick lying close to hand by the bed.

And (b) wait until your darling dog is eating next, then try to take the food bowl away. Look into his/her/its eyes at the very second it notices. Oh yes, dear hearts: they are no more than wild animals with a veneer of civilization laid thin on top.

Does anyone here not remember the Great Cape May Feral Pekinese incident of the 1850s? When the fashion of the day was for every lady to carry a tiny Peke around like a muff? Well, I adore a fur muff as much as the next man but even I could see there was trouble coming.

When the numbers of Pekes reached 10,000, instinctive pack mentality took over and they instantaneously leapt from their perches and formed a whirling mass of fluff and diamante collars around the band stand.

Amusing though this was — Ernie Hemingway was in town and I recall him roaring “That’s the biggest muff I have ever seen!” over the noise of 10,000 dogs yipping at near-ultrasonic pitch — it turned nasty when the pack grew hungry.

Well, it was like a great hairy carpet being unrolled right over the front row of the crowd. And when the carpet was rolled back, all that remained were gleaming chewed bones. Thank the Lord that only some folks from Wildwood had been standing there.

We all fled ahead of the snarling feral carpet, which roamed the streets unchecked for some hours, consuming anything that could not run faster or climb higher than 18 inches off the sidewalk.

In the end Ernie, Albert and I strode forth to give battle. Ernie had his Elephant Gun, Albert his teeth and I a pair of fine skillets from Mrs D’s kitchen. The carnage was awful, and to this day City Ordnance forbids any gathering of more than three Pekes in town.

On the plus side we all got rather fetching flouncy fur coats from the affair.

10/13: Marie Pavese’s 90th Birthday Party At Cape May VFW

We called Marie’s oldest son, Dan Pavese, to get the skinny on his mom’s party, and he told us how much it meant that this be a special evening. “I’ve planned a lot of events, but for this one, I had butterflies and headaches!

The manager at the VFW, a woman named Kim, had to calm me down.

“My mom deserves all the best.

Our father left us when she had four children and my younger sister was only two years old. She went to work — as a bookkeeper and a payroll clerk — and fed and took care of us all. At 90, she’s still taking care of people. Everyone’s proud of his mom; I’m especially proud.”

It’s a night that wouldn’t have been possible, Dan says, without the “great staff” of the VFW, and his “wonderful wife and support system, Sally”.

Dear Answer Lady I moved to Cape May a couple of years ago from “up the road,” as you folks call it, and am very happy here. The problem is that I’ve been using the same hairdresser forever, which means I have been driving a 100-mile roundtrip every couple of months to get my hair cut.

Frankly, it’s getting a little old, so I guess I’ll have to start shopping around for a new stylist locally. Is it okay to tell a hairdresser that you’re just ‘taking a test drive’? — How’s My Hair Dear Your Hair is Lovely That is perfectly acceptable. Selecting the proper hairstylist is not unlike buying the right car, shopping for the perfect shoes, or auditioning one’s next… romantic interest. Through November 4 Scarecrow Alley: The grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street, are ghoulishly transformed for Halloween with a display of frightening and fun scarecrows created by members of the community. Take a stroll along Scarecrow Alley on the grounds.

Free admission. Open daily.

Scarecrow Contest: Artistic, ghoulish, funny and frightening scarecrows compete for prizes during the annual Scarecrow Contest on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street. Community participants submitted full-sized scarecrow entries that are displayed on the grounds of the estate along “Scarecrow Alley.” Contest winners will receive prizes in various catego-

ries, with a People’s Choice Award and $200 to the creators of the scarecrow that garners the most votes. Participate by voting!

Through November 16 Cape May Stage presents Poe, Times Two: Twin tales of mystery, murder... and mortar! A double-bill of short, one-man plays adapted from two classic stories of mystery and horror, “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Black Cat,” by Edgar Allan Poe. One actor. Two classic horror stories! Performances will be from October 31 through Nov.ember 16; Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 3pm and 8pm, Sundays at 3pm, and Thursdays at 8pm Half-price preview performance Wednesday, October 31 at 8pm. The Robert Shackleton Playhouse is located at the corner of Bank and Lafayette. Admission is $35 for adults, $30 for Seniors, $15 for students.

November 2-3 East Lynne Theater Company presents Sherlock Holmes’ Adventure of the Norwood Builder: Performed in the style of an NBC radio show from the 1930s, complete with live sound effects and commercials. All of the evidence points to a young lawyer as the murderer. But is he being set-up, or is he the murderer after all? It’s an exciting puzzle fit for Holmes and Watson. The show starts at 8pm at the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street. Tickets are $25; $15 for students; and free for ages 12 and under.

Fall Arts & Crafts Festival: More than 40 vendors come to Cape May to sell handmade novelties including seasonal decorations, gift items and more. The fun kicks off at 10am and lasts until 4pm, at Cape May Convention Hall, Beach Avenue at Stockton.

Admission is $2 for adults, and free for children 12 and under.

Historic Haunts Combo Tour: Get into the spirit of things on a trolley tour of some of Cape May’s regal Victorian residences, reputed to host more than the living. Then it’s a guided tour of the historic (some say haunted) Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street, with a discussion of Victorian spiritualism. Starts at 7pm. Tickets are $20 for adults, and $15 for children (ages 3-12).

HAKE the Cape May sand out of your dancing shoes — on November 17, it’s time to dance.

Dancing is a traditional activity at seaside resorts.

Before Queen Victoria was born, Jane Austen sent her characters to dance in Bath, a resort about 25 miles from the sea. Austen captured the strict etiquette that governed the dances — no woman could dance with a partner to whom she had not been introduced, and if she danced more than twice with one partner, she would be considered “fast.” If a gentleman presented himself and asked politely, it was rude for the lady to refuse a dance. The order of the dances was written on the dance card, carried on a cord by the lady, and gentlemen carried small pencils so they could reserve a dance.

Because ladies kept these elaborate dance cards as souvenirs, they often paid more for their dance tickets.

Most often, the master of ceremonies, who was in charge of the music, and who could properly introduce a gentleman to a lady, scheduled country dances, Scottish

It wasn’t until 1816, when the Prince Regent waltzed at a royal ball, that “intimate” dancing began to be accepted. A portrait of Victoria and Albert dancing the waltz gave the dance a romantic reputation, and the waltz became the most popular dance throughout the 19th century.

According to Fred Astaire dance studios, dances were often held the night

before a battle, and men wore their swords while dancing, which may be why the lady places her left hand on her partner’s shoulder instead of his waist.

Cape May is often home to vintage dance events, but this November, you can try your hand — or foot — at more modern dance. Ballroom dancing is enjoying a boom in popularity today, thanks, in part, to shows like Dancing with the Stars, which showcases the rumba, the paso doble, the lindy hop and the tango. Dancing is low cost and great exercise.

Accomplished dancers and beginners can have fun dancing along with Fred Hall in Cape May. The Fred Hall Orchestra will be at Convention Hall beginning at 8pm, playing “lively, sophisticated musical styles from show tunes to disco, from big bands to rock.” There’s no pressure — “reluctant hoofers” are welcome — and admission is only $5. And, if when you need a break, you and your partner can gaze at the ocean view.

You don’t have to pre-register for anything. Just show up and pay at the door. For adults, it’s just $5, 5 small ones; speaking of small ones, admission is $2 for kids under 12

and free if they are five and under.

That’s less than it cost for that first ride on a roller coaster! I’m going to assume that the first kiss was free. And it you get swept up in the bird festival mania and want to find out exactly why tens of thousands of people come to Cape May every year just to watch birds, it’s going to cost you much less than the price of that new car. In fact, less than the cost of used bicycle and way less than a new one.

You can sign up for bird walks, programs right at Convention Hall, and a day or more of the festival’s array of indoor and outdoor events. You don’t have binoculars? That’s easily fixed. The top manufacturers will be at Convention Hall. You can test drive the planets most coveted optics (and maybe catch a bit of seabird migration right out on the deck overlooking the ocean.).

Late October is the peak of fall bird migration. Tens of thousands of migrating sea ducks (not to mention loons, gannets, and other sea birds) will be speeding along, just offshore. At the Hawk Watch at Cape
