Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Mary Jane Roache of Drexel Hill, PA. How long have you been coming to Cape May? Since 1975. I used to just visit for the day, but then my parents bought a house there, and now I have one as well. Who are you normally with? My husband, Bill, and my daughter, Carolyn. Favorite thing about Cape May? The meadows, which are right off of Sunset Boulevard. Least favorite thing? Parking. Favorite restaurants? The Lobster House Coffee Shop and Panico’s. Favorite place to stay? My house, which is on Columbia Avenue in West Cape May. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? January. It is the only month when it’s just a little too cold outside. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? I like the Talk of the Town column. It tells you what’s going on around town so I’m always kept upto-date. It also has a very witty perspective that I like. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? Nothing. What’s your T-shirt size? Extra large, please!

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Diane Stopyra. Quotes Of The Week

Random Factoid

“Great love affairs start with Champagne and end with tisane.” —Honore de Balzac “Champagne for my real friends and real pain for my sham friends.”—Tom Waits “Some people wanted champagne and caviar when they should have had beer and hot dogs.” — Dwight D. Eisenhower

CHAMPAGNE was very sweet in 19th century, sometimes more than 10 times as sweet as the average brut is now. The amount of sugar back then made a glass of the good stuff as sweet as a sugary soda. Today, brut champagnes, the most popular type of bubbly, have low sugar, around 1.5% or less.

Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... Cognac Sparklers INTERESTED in mixing up your drink of choice for this year’s New Year’s Eve toast? If you’re bored with just a class of classic champagne, try this sophisticated cocktail instead. The apple flavor plays delightlfully off the strength of the Cognac. Hard sparkling cider may be substituted for soft if you would prefer. You can’t toast the coming new year alone, so this recipe makes two drinks.

Ingredients: 1 oz(2 tablespoons) Cognac 1 cup chilled sparkling apple cider A few dashes bitters 2 Champagne flutes Pour Cognac into each of 2 Champagne flutes. Top each with chilled sparkling apple cider, and finish with a few dashes bitters. Stir well, and make sure to make a toast before you enjoy.

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

New Face In Town

CAPE May Stage will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year... a time to look back on all that the professional equity theater has become. We can be proud of the 1853 church turned stateof-the-art venue that is the Robert Shackleton Playhouse, the Broadway talent which makes its way here every season, the education and outreach programs which immerse local children in the beauty of the arts, and the fact that all of this exists in our own backyard. With so many feathers in the caps of those responsible for this Cape May gem, it would be easy, one would think, for complacency to creep in. Not that we advocate for any organization resting on its laurels, but this non-profit does have a great deal of them on which to rest. And yet, the attitude at Cape May Stage is less nostalgia for the past, and more excitement for the future. This week, we sat down with Jon Wojciechowski, the new Executive Managing Director at Cape May Stage. Crossword-doer, zombie aficionado, and nationally-renowned expert on marketing and development, he’s got heaps of fresh ideas for this little theater by the sea, as well as the experience needed to see them through. “It’s an honor for me to come here at this time,” Jon told us. “I really feel like I’m on the cusp of something great. I feel like this is my chance to prove myself.” But prove himself is something Jon has already done. Beside the short stint where he wanted to become an astronaut, Jon always thought he’d like to be involved with theatre. As a child growing up in New York, he participated in community and regional productions. “ I was a terrible actor,” he said. “I had this habit of rocking back and forth. They used to have another

kid sit behind me in rehearsals to hold my legs in the hopes of breaking me of the habit.” But when it came time for college, Jon’s parents forbade him from studying the performing arts. “They wanted me to get a job,” he said. So he went into business instead and, after graduation, joined the marketing department of a friend’s HMO. “That’s how I got into healthcare, which I’ve done for 19 years.” At the beginning of his career, Jon worked for bigger healthcare systems and hospitals, but this proved frustrating. “I had a lot of theories about marketing and fundraising, but at a really large organization, you have to go through so many layers of approval, and it can take years to change tactics,” he said. So when an opportunity arose to move to Portland, Maine and become the VP of marketing for a much smaller organization, he seized the chance. “I saw it as a laboratory for all of my crazy marketing and development ideas.” Jon said. “In three years, we completely changed the place around. The town went from hating us to loving us.” And this was no small feat, considering his first week on the job, the hospital received a letter from just one of many disgruntled patrons, saying she’d rather “die en route to another hospital than ever be treated there again.” Jon’s success did not go unnoticed; he’s won 55 national awards for marketing and development, he speaks countrywide on marketing and fundraising policies, and he’s written a book called Marketing Your Mission, slated for publication at the end of 2013. But even this wonderful response to his work could not help him suppress the nagging feeling that healthcare was not his forever job. “Two years ago, I went through an early mid-life crisis,” he said (adding that he’s 46, but doesn’t like to admit it, so his age varies, depending on where you look

online). “I figured I’ve got at least another 20, 25 years of work and, actually, I’m not a person who can see myself retiring at all,” he said. “I thought: Why not switch careers?” And that is how Jon ended up as Managing Director of Portland Stage in Maine and, after having to leave that job in order to deal for an extended time with his deceased father’s estate, at Cape May Stage. “I just want to build on all of the great work the board, the volunteers, [Artistic Director] Roy Steinberg, and the staff have done,” he said, explaining that this process will include more integration with the local arts community, greater use of social media, initiatives that will make the stage more accessible to young audiences, and the implementation of an “aggressive” intern program. “This is key for us,” he said. “Not only do we have a lot we can teach interns, but we have a lot we can learn from young, emerging theatre professionals. They are fresh out of college with fresh ideas, not yet biased by life. They want to know why you can’t just charge five dollars a seat, throw open the doors and have 10 shows a day. They’re coming in with a different perspective, and I find somewhere in the middle is where really great ideas are born.” In the meantime, Jon is spending his time getting acquainted with Cape May, where he says everyone has been “incredibly welcoming.” He’s been pleased to encounter Bath Time on the Mall (“soap is one of my weaknesses”), but he’s equally happy spending time at home. “I’m a big nerd,” he said. “I like my crossword puzzles. I like to read. I love model railroading. And ghost stories, zombies, and post-apocalyptic stories are my guilty pleasure.” Another interest? Carpenter’s Gothic

Jon Wojciechowski has the challenge of implementing lots of exciting new ideas for Cape May Stage. We’ve got the challenge of learning how to spell and pronounce his last name. Aleksey Moryakov

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 architecture. “After Anderson Cooper bought his firehouse and converted it into a home, I thought that would be such a great idea,” Jon said. So I started Googling, and I found this cute little firehouse that for some reason I thought was on the west coast. Turns out, it’s the one in town here; I stumbled across it my first weekend here, driving around trying to familiarize myself with town. I was stopped at a red light and I said, ‘That’s my firehouse.’ How weird is that? It’s like being here is meant to be.” Something else that’s looking meant to be? A compelling 2013 season at Cape May Stage, which is currently looking into an additional seventh show. Buy your tickets, Cape May; we’re thinking they’re going to be even hotter than usual.

Getting Fit For The New Year

ACCORDING to the University of Scranton, 45% of Americans will make a New Year’s resolution this year. Because losing weight

and staying fit are usually among the top 10 most popular resolutions (number one and five, respectively, last year), we figured we’d get you the skinny on getting skinny in Cape May. As for those of you who are looking to, say, budget your money better (number three), quit smoking (number seven), or fall in love (a veritable afterthought, coming in at number nine!), you’re on your own. We contacted Mark Chamberlain — coowner of North Beach Health Club, a level one certified CrossFit trainer, and a certified Olympic lifting trainer — who gave us the rundown on the classes offered at his gym. Or, at least, some of the classes offered here. “We have over 20; you know that, right?” Mark said when we asked him for an explanation of each. No, we did not know that. So here are some of the basics, and some of the misconceptions that surround them: Yoga, pilates, and Zumba are all good places to begin for, well, beginners, Mark says. And if you’re one of those cavemen who thinks yoga would be an emasculating lady-fest,

you’re wrong. “Men and women attend almost equally,” Mark said. “I direct everyone to yoga, even the burlier, stronger guys, right after the holiday.” Part of Mark’s own resolution? Yoga every Sunday. “It takes a lot of core strength.” Once you get a bit more fit, advanced power yoga is also an option. Also important to know for beginners is not to be scared away by classes which have the same reputation as that bully who used to pummel kids in the schoolyard. “Every class is scaled to your ability,” Mark said. “Whatever’s going on, you don’t have to be stepping as high or kicking as high.” Even in CrossFit, we wanted to know? This is, after all, the class with the rap as the biggest pummeler. “CrossFit is the place I learned how important it is to bring people in at their own pace,” Mark said. “Recently, I had two 63-year-old people who’d just started and a 19-year-old girl in one class. Everyone got a killer workout. Everyone competes against themselves, but it’s a real team effort. No one leaves until the last person is

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 done. It’s a culture of camaraderie.” The regular CrossFit classes are an even-split between guys and gals, but for women who don’t feel comfortable working out in the same room as men, Mark also offers two female-only classes. The focus in each CrossFit? Speed, strength, balance, agility, power, stamina, endurance, coordination, and accuracy, which is a lot of return for your resolution. Despite what you may have heard, bootcamp isn’t going to be full of Schwarzenegger types, either. “It’s not meant to build tremendous strength,” Mark said. Set up as a circuit complete with 11 to 14 stations, this is a “very challenging cardio workout.” But let’s say none of these appeal to you, and you’re also not into spin (“This is another world; it tends to attract a die-hard, passionate crowd”), interval training (“It’s a combo of step weights, bands, and functional body movements”), boxing (“This is taught by local professional Chuck Mussachio, and it’s a great way to get out extra aggression”), or the soonto-be implemented classes geared entirely for larger men and women with a considerable amount of weight to lose. How do you stay trim without a gym? “You lose weight in the

kitchen,” Mark said. “You can do all the working out you want to, but if you’re not eating properly, it won’t matter.” Here are some important myth-busters: 1. “Stay away from anything that says low fat,” Mark says. “It just means the flavor has been substituted with something else, likely more sugar. And if a product says low sugar, look for substitutes like Nutrisweet or aspartame, which become toxic in your body over time. The only thing you can do to avoid sugar is stop eating it.” And you should stop eating it. “Sugar is a killer,” Mark says. “If you have a big belly, you’re eating too much of it.” 2. Restricting calories is “the worst thing you can do,” Mark says. “You should be eating plenty of food,” he told us, “high protein, good

carbs, lots of veggies, some fruit. Eating crappy lean cuisines meals never works; you will end up putting the weight back on. Some people do it because they need to fixate on something... it used to be food; now it’s numbers. If you need the fixation, that’s fine. Otherwise, it’s stupid.” Mark instead recommends the Zone Diet or the Paleo Diet (otherwise known as the “caveman diet;” it involves eating nothing our caveman ancestors wouldn’t have had access to) as alternatives. And be sure to make your food ahead of time. “Otherwise,” he explains, “when you get home from work, you’ll be too stinking hungry, and you’ll opt for the bag of potato chips from Wawa.” 3. No need to go crazy with the water. Yes, it’s important, and the more you work out, the more you need, but for some people, Mark says, “it becomes a fetish.” The thirst mechanism is there for a reason. Mark also recommends, if you’re not a gym rat, hiring a personal trainer who can work to your strengths and show you how to do things the right way, so you’re not wasting your time. (Mark just ran a half-marathon, which he trained for once a week. “If you know how to run properly, you can do it forever,” he told us.)

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 But no matter where you choose to get fit in 2013 — in the home or the gym — remember that it IS possible to reach your goals. Mark told us about a woman named Ruth, mother of six, who lost 109 pounds in one year, after making her own New Years resolution. “When she started out, she was able to do almost nothing,” Mark said. “She was in the senior class, and she’s only 35.” Now, she does CrossFit, spin, and “all kinds of training” regularly. She’s amazing.” And if this doesn’t inspire you to drop and give us 20, nothing will.

Exit Zero Burns Supper

THERE will be an exciting new twist to the hottest event of Cape May’s winter. On Thursday, January 24, we will be hosting the Ninth Annual Exit Zero Burns Supper at the Ugly Mug. This is our annual homage to the national poet of Scotland, Robert Burns, which is a sell-out every year. Why the Scottish theme? In case you’re new to this magazine (welcome!), EZ’s publisher is Scottish, so there you have it. It’s good enough reason. We have people coming from as far as Pittsburgh for this event, and this year, there is even more reason to come. For the first time,

we will be making our own haggis! Genius artist, and regular EZ contributor, Victor Grasso is also an excellent cook and he will be working with Ugly mug chef Gary Romberger and his men in the kitchen to concoct a treat that even the most skeptical of Americans will HAVE to try. Listen folks, we will NOT be cooking it in a sheep’s stomach — that’s old school haggis. No, this dish will be made with ground sirloin from our pals at West Side Market, along with oatmeal and spices. It will

be served with turnip freshly pulled from the Exit Zero garden in Cape May, and mashed potato. In other words, an absolute treat! If you DON’T wish to partake, you can always have the fish and chips. For appetizer, choose from the ridiculously tasty Scotch egg (boiled egg wrapped in sausage and fried) and salad. There is whisky cake for dessert. And then there are the festivities! As always, the men of the Irish Pipe Brigade will be there, treating us all to a bagpipe jamboree. There will also be poetry recitals and music from some of our favorite local artists. More than half the tickets have already sold, so get on it! They cost $30 each and proceeds will be donated to the Exit 0 Jazz Festival. You can buy them by calling our store at 609770-8479 (yes it’s winter, but we are open every single day, 10-5), or by going online to ezstore.us and clicking on Burns Supper. Tickets are the same price as they were the first year — just $30. Finally, this publication has been very critical of City Hall this year (and in previous years). We will be continuing to hold our elected officials accountable in the coming year(s), but as always we will be working to do our best to promote Cape May. That’s why we’re here! But in the meantime, all we want to do is to wish everyone a wonderful 2013!

The Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever

L

OTS to get to, and not a lot of time to do it. So shut up and read already. My wife would like to thank Shannon, Jeanette, Deanna, Christina and Lori, the girls of Accent on Beauty, for the lovely day she spent with them last Friday, getting pampered in the fashion in which she deserves and would receive daily were I a millionaire. But I’m not, so once a year sounds about right. And I wouldn’t want to spoil her… And I would like to thank them for taking the fight out of her for a few hours. I was able to nap, fart, play Wii, eat potato chips and scratch myself in some places without retort. Pretty good day for all, I’d say. (My wife apologizes for any name misspellings; her eyes were crossed until about 9 o’clock.) Did the Terry O’ke thing at Dog Tooth Grill last Tuesday for their annual staff party (though in December I call it Merry O’ke) and I have to say, the corner of Taylor and NJ Avenues in Wildwood just might be as windy as the corner of Beach and Ocean

in Cape May. So… congratulations, corner of Taylor and NJ? South Jersey Sports Training proprietor Mike Wilson’s new gym (Cape May Fitness Center in North Cape May) will most likely be opening just after the New Year. IF, he says, he’s happy with it. If not he’ll take an extra week or two to finish sprucing it up before opening to the public. Okay, Mike… I guess I’ll try to stay fat until February. But I can’t promise anything. I’m coaching my son Henry’s feisty six- and seven-year-old basketball team again this year. One of them, Lily Vogel, has progressed from being so shy she didn’t want to walk on the court at our first

practice to me now begging her to let other kids shoot at her fourth practice. I’m like Larry Brown! I have also learned she is a niece (or something) of Wildwood Crest native Frank Vogel. Oh, he’s also the coach of the Indiana Pacers of the NBA. So… no pressure. Stopped into the Pilot House last Sunday for the official debut of Red Mare, a new supergroup featuring Rose Kelly, Ed Dobbs, Chuck Manich and Andy Vernon, local legends all. Being something of a local legend myself (though hardly on their level) I found it interesting to see so many other local legends there to catch them — Don Shough, Syndi Raymond, Barry Tischler (who did a fine job priming the crowd), House Divided, and so on. This goes to show the high esteem in which these guys are held. We were not musicians from 5:30-7, we were fans. And we were not disappointed. Red Mare are actively seeking gigs. Contact them at redmareband.com. On the opposite end of the spectrum, it

looks like Acoustic Mayhem’s run at Goodnight Irene’s has come to an end (we were told “don’t turn down any work”, which is code for “here’s your hat, what’s your hurry?”). The acoustic/ open mic/ karaoke thing never quite took hold, and we’ll be finishing up this Saturday with a straight Acoustic Mayhem show. So come out what you’re going to not miss! Or something. Then come see us at Anglesea Pub on January 5! But on the opposite end of THAT spectrum, I couldn’t be more pleased with the progress of the First Annual Beatles Night, Cape May, which is happening January 20, 7pm-11pm. The response has been, quite literally, overwhelming. As of this writing, 45 of the 50 song slots have been claimed, which is simply amazing. And this is my last chance to promote it in EZ, so I will do so with full force! I invite you all to come out and sing and dance along, or just listen and enjoy a cocktail or two (or six… the more the bar makes the more the band makes). It’s going to be a blast. And we finally found a name for the house band (Me, Mike O’Brien, Will Knapp {Ding!} of Acoustic Mayhem, Terry Dougherty of the Herb Moore Trio and Al Olivero of Stage 3) — The Love Me Dudes! Eh? Eh? I’m also told that if this one goes well (it will) there may be another in February. Who’s in? I’m also working on another February show. I don’t want to say too much, but let’s just say it involves the Anglesea Pub, and a piano, man. To those reading “A Very Zombie Christmas”, the fifth chapter appears in this issue and will be concluded online next week... so tune into exitzero.us. And don’t miss my second short story collection, which will be published next year, along with an e-book version, too. I have often, in the past, used the term “chaps my ass” as

a way to present anger of frustration. As in... “The way Andy Reid uses his timeouts really chaps my ass.” Well now, as a person of a certain size who mounts the treadmill three to four days a week for three miles at a pop, I know exactly what a chapped ass feels like. And let me tell you, it is no laughing matter. So before you use this phrase in a nonchalant manner, please think of your fat friends who may be struggling with chapped ass right now. Weight Watch: I tried not to make a big deal out of it, but I’m pretty proud of the fact that I have now gone ONE YEAR without McDonald’s or fast food of any kind, and in the process have lost 20 lbs since January 1, 2012, when I tipped the scales at 252 lbs, a.k.a. The Heaviest I’ve Ever Been. I got down to a September low of 223 and currently hover around 232 depending on what time of day it is, what/ when I’ve eaten, the number of suns circling the Earth, how full my bladder is, and a number of other very scientific factors. The Big Deal aspect of this has been the keeping off of most of it, which I struggle with every year. It’s easy to lose some weight when you’re working 60-plus hours and seven-plus days a week in the summer. I’d like to drop another 10-15 lbs by the time EZ returns in February, but I’ve learned to be happy where I am. At a net 20 lbs lost per year, by the time I’m dead I’ll be my ideal weight. That’s all for this year. I hope everyone has (had) a Merry Christmas, and I hope to see you at Rio Station on New Year’s Eve to turn another page. Til then, I’ll see you when I see you. (Look for my Best of/ Worst of column on the Exit Zero website, exitzero.us.) ’Til next year, don’t get caught in The Undertow. No animals were insulted in the making of this column.

The Movie Column

T

This week, Dave Jambo, Cape May Film Society member, reviews “Lincoln”

HE latest history adaptation, Lincoln, from Steven Spielberg has received seven Golden Globe nominations and is looking like a contender for Oscar. So when I went to see this film, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, I had great expectations. The story follows Lincoln through the Civil War and emancipation of the slaves. As you would expect from a big budget production, the sets and cinematography are excellent. But the history lesson is out to lunch. There are conversations between Lincoln and other characters that are disingenuous at best, contrived at worst. If you asked the screenwriters, “Did that conversation really take place?” They might answer, “Who says it didn’t?” And don’t we deserve more dedication to accuracy? Here, there is absolutely none. Daniel Day-Lewis will no doubt be nominated for awards. His acting in this film was too theatrical — as if he was in a stage play versus a film. Or perhaps it was

If only honest Abe were portrayed more, well, honestly... just that I did not find his character believable — which is not to say I don’t find Lincoln believable — just the character as portrayed in this movie. Given the choice between seeing this film and another about Lincoln... choose the other. It might be that you will watch a well-done documentary. Or maybe you’ll even want to see Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, a campy movie released earlier this year. Why not see the vampire slaying Lin-

coln? At least you will have zero expectation for accuracy! This trend towards films that are more biographically sketchy versus biographical sketches is prevalent. Bill Murray is starring in the new film Hyde Park on Hudson where he plays President Franklin Roosevelt. This film is not receiving the best of reviews in part because of its failure to have a standard for historical accuracy. While I’m providing a review of new movies, try to stay away from a film called This Is 40. It’s called a sequel to the 2007 film Knocked Up (as if that’s supposed to be a selling point). Essentially the film is Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann as a 40-something couple whining about nothing. Oh, and not like the Seinfeld-esque let’s talk about nothing and be funny. Rather this is more like let’s complain about everything and have a funny line here and there but ultimately make you feel miserable. Skip it. Cape May Film Society welcomes your reviews! Email your notes (not a full review, we can make it one!) to capemayfilm@hotmail.com.

« FUN FACT... At the First Presbyterian Church, members of Troop 73 helped collect and sort donations to the Community Food Closet. At the end of the day, they were able to transport three pick-up truck loads, according to Scoutmaster Brian Favre. “I am very proud of all the Scouts in Troop 73,” Brian told us. “With all that is going on in the world today, it is very important to give back to your community. The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

DO love starting the new year with a bottle of the finest Capepagne. Or, as the uncouth today insist on calling it, Champagne. I will have none of that nonsense, I assure you (though I trust you know me well enough by now to be sure that my stance on all things “nonsense” is to take my silver-topped walking cane to the fool dispensing it and deliver a sound thrashing): we invented sparkling wine here in Cape May and we will not be robbed of the credit. Actually, I lie: we have long since been robbed of all credit but still, I didn’t get where I am today by accepting defeat without first emptying the chambers of my pair of pearly handled revolvers at the culprit. Which brings me nicely to the origins of the drink. I recall Daniel Boone and I were taking delivery of a few cases of wine from the local Lenape Indians (oh come now, you didn’t know they had vineyards? Did you think they were savages? Next you will deny all knowledge of the world famous Lenape Hanging Gardens or the fact that the existing lighthouse stands on

the site of the one the Lenape built from seashells and gold nuggets, that stood 300 meters tall and whose f lame could be seen all the way to Ireland) and neither they nor we had noticed the wine was not done fermenting. Of course in these days the bottles were of thick raw glass and the corks were lumps of lead shot pressed to be a perfect seal. Well, Danny and I were barely halfway back to the city when we were ambushed by none other than a roving pack of Conquistadores, intent on raping, pillaging

and incessantly babbling Spanish. We were caught with our guns holstered and our swords sheathed, and so could only run for our lives, still carrying the jiggling rattling bottles of wine. In the end, they cornered us on the lawn of Congress Hall (which of course was not Congress Hall in these days: what do you take this story for: something fanciful?) and we prepared to die, when all of a sudden one of the bottles exploded from the internal pressure, sending a lead ball through the head of the leading Spaniard. We instantly seized more bottles and shook them like malarial fellas, and gunned down all our foes in seconds. Of course we had to then finish the opened bottles and then staggered to our destination, helped along the way by a passing and treacherous Frenchie, whom I may in my inebriation have told the tale to. Well, the rogue set sail for France immediately, and the rest is history: he came up with a ridiculous alternative account of the drink’s history, and we were cheated. Unbelievable, no?

A Very Zombie Christmas

“A Midnight Clear...,” chapter five of Terry O’Brien’s chilling holiday short story Cape May Police Headquarters, City Hall, Washington Street; 3:57am:

C

ITY prosecutor Carol Wiggins stood, panting, blood splashed across her nice Christmas sweater, fire axe in her hand, bone and sinew hanging off the blade. She had just removed the infected arm of Chris Kersh in the swiftest, yet most brutal fashion possible. Chris looked at his dead arm. “Thank you,” he, then collapsed into a pile of corded rope. Kermy removed his belt and tied it tight around Chris’ wound. The bleeding slowed to a trickle. He then took off his trench, dabbed the sweat from his face with a sleeve. He was breathing heavily, as was Carol, for different reasons; she was excited, he was losing it. They regarded each other and calmed a bit. He went to the door, took the axe, jammed it through the handles of the big brass front doors against the approaching creatures outside. Then he went back to Carol, looked her right in her deep brown eyes, and said, “Let’s find out what the fuck is going on.” *** “KERMY” Chris whispered through parched lips. “Kermy… thank God…” “Take it easy, jefe,” Kermy replied, kneeling by Chris’ side. It had been about 45 minutes since the events at the door. In that time Kermy had shown Carol the hellish scene in holding, talked Lola down from her psychotic ledge, barred all doors, drove screws into all the window sashes. “Just take it easy,” Kermy told him. Lola, who had spent three summers working as an EMT before landing her job with the CMPD as nighttime dispatcher, had been able to do a rudimentary, but effective, suchering job on his arm using materials from the HQ trauma bag. “My dog…” Chris moaned. “They got my dog…” “Champ?” Kermy asked, upset. “He was a good dog.” Kermy, who had gone to high school with Chris, couldn’t remember the last time he’d seen him without that dog. Carol approached. “We’ve got to get him out of here. Lola stopped the bleeding

All was quiet. Until it wasn’t. A pattern emerged from the white noise of the frightful weather outside, they all heard it; drumming. But not drumming. Pounding. “The walls.” Kermy muttered. “They’re banging on them!” but if we don’t get some medicine in him…” Lola, huddled on a chair with Jimmy behind the reception desk, said, “I gave him a shot of antibiotics, a handful of painkillers… that’ll buy him some time, but Carol’s right; that trauma bag was God knows how old, the tools… they could have been sterile or they could have been…” she looked at her hands which were covered with Chris’ dried blood, “… crawling with bacteria. He’s needs more help than we can give.” Kermy snapped, “I’m aware of all of this but just how in the hell are we supposed to get him to the hospital in the middle of a goddamned blizzard, surrounded by those… things?” “Zombies!” Chris gasped. Kermy had been avoiding the word, but the evidence of the last few hours all pointed to it; the body of Tom Pratt reappearing at his home; the mother, Lisa, losing a life-ending amount of blood, yet the crimson footprints; the Byrne brothers; and the snow creatures he’d seen on the street. And the military guy. The military guy. “Lola,” he almost shouted. “Tell me again about the Army guy who stopped in.” Lola searched a moment. “I told you; I don’t know what his affiliation was, he

moved so fast. He came in, said he was here in advance of the storm, some kind of prep work, flashed his credentials, asked me for some paperwork on our evacuation process. I got it for him out of Captain Miller’s office. When I came back he was drinking a soda, he took the papers and left.” Kermy’s jaw set. “A soda.” “So?” Carol asked. “Machine’s in the hallway near holding.” “And?” “Lola, how long were you in Captain Miller’s office?” She rubbed Jimmy’s head, who was eating another Kit-Kat, nodding along to the music piping through the ear buds of Lola’s iPod. “A minute, maybe two.” Kermy asked, “Long enough for a guy to go into holding, do… whatever he did to the Byrnes, grab a soda and come back?” Lola sank. “Yes.” Kermy stood. “Then let’s find out what he did to the Byrnes.” “The brain…” Chris whispered. “What?” “The brain… zombies… you have to destroy the brain.”

From Page 51 “How do you know?” “That’s how I killed the one… on the beach… the cop…” Kermy’s blood froze. “Cop?” Chris nodded. “Tried to eat my arm… my hand… I fought it off… used a shovel…” “Lola,” Kermy said, his mood black, “did you send Officer Reagan to follow-up the 10-65 at the Pratt residence?” Lola put a hand to her mouth as tears leaked from her eyes. Answer enough. “Dammit,” Carol said. “Dammit.” They had all done the same math and reached a similar conclusion. Kermy knelt once more next to his friend. “Bleeding’s stopped,” he said and removed his belt from above the raw stump, now covered in oozing gauze. “And I’m really sorry about this, but…” He wrapped the belt around Chris’ waist and the bench, cinched it tight, made sure the buckle was out of his reach. Chris whispered, “Understand…” Kermy patted him on the shoulder and stood. “Lola, please stay here with Jimmy and Chris. Carol, would you please come with me?”

Thursday, December 27, 2012 “Sure,” she said. “Give me a second.” She dashed out of the HQ through the City Hall doors. After what seemed an eternity she returned with the axe. But she was not dashing; her naturally olive-hued Italian face had gone pallid. Kermy asked, “You okay?” She nodded, “I replaced the axe with a flagpole, the door’s secure. But…” Kermy asked, “Yes?” She answered, “Just listen.” So they did. All was quiet. The occasional howl of wind rattled a window, otherwise silent. Until it wasn’t. A pattern emerged from the white noise of the frightful weather outside, they all heard it; drumming. But not drumming. Pounding. “The walls.” Kermy muttered. “They’re banging on them,” Carol said. Kermy replied, “Then we better hurry.” So they did, into holding and, with her axe, Carol pinned the Bruce-thing to the floor while it fed, and Kermy pressed a short spade from the custodial closet, which they kept around in case of snow storms like this one, through the back of its head, scrambling its brain. It fell still. With Stefan, there was no brain left to scramble; his big brother had done an admirable job

thoroughly scooping it all out through his face cavity. “Gross…” Carol said to no one. They rolled the Bruce-thing over. “There,” Kermy said. Carol saw it, too; a long, thin slice across the Adam’s apple. Stefan bore the same wound. “So what,” Carol asked, “the military guy comes back here, kills them, then…” Kermy shrugged. “Bio weapon? Super enzyme? Voodoo curse? I don’t know. But this is all starting to look like a testing ground to me. Starting with the Pratt’s.” “And all the people outside?” Kermy paused, thinking the unthinkable. “You’ve seen the movies.” Carol took a deep, hard breath. Exhaled. Hefted the axe and spit on the floor. “Then let’s make damn sure we don’t get bit.” Cape May Police HQ, City Hall, Washington Street; 5am THE figure in the black, vaguely military jumpsuit and fur-lined hood cinched and huddled against the whipping wind, stood on the roof of City Hall, which afforded a

Thursday, December 27, 2012 A Very Zombie Christmas ? From Page 52 rather excellent bird’s eye view of central Cape May, looking out as it did over Ocean and Washington Streets and the adjacent outdoor walking mall, the town’s mercantile center, and offering a decent view of the city’s other main traffic artery, Lafayette Street. Beneath the hood he wore infrared night vision goggles, which dispersed the darkness and gave him a clear, emerald view… of the millions of thick snowflakes exploding all around him in small white tornadoes. But occasionally the snow would clear long enough for him to see, with perfect clarity, the ground 5 stories below, and the thickening ring of lost, wandering souls surrounding the building. The dark figure walked the rectangle perimeter of the old building’s roof; as far as the eye could see the streets were filling with more night walkers, no doubt victims of the exponential rate at which he was assured the VOX-23 virus would spread. This was, in all ways, a successful beta test of the virus, with 98% of the town infected and turned in a little less than 12 hours. From the day he absconded with the elixir from the CDC he knew it would make him a very rich man, and his nefarious international contacts, fruits of his days in the CIA, had borne him out; the latest bid stood at just over a billion dollars. What nation wouldn’t pay top dollar for the ability to create and maintain a nearly inexhaustible army of the undead? He could see the recruitment posters now; “Join the Army: Serve in life, serve in death, forever in glory” or some other jingoistic claptrap that would seriously adorn the walls of every Wal-Mart in the country. Wiping the goggles clean, he once more crossed the roof and peaked over the rear of the

building. There were people inside who so far, he knew, were putting up a pretty good fight. But it would prove futile in the end, what with his spiking of the local water delivery system and the fact that VOX23 became airborne and 100 times more contagious after 6 hours gestation, which is why, beneath the hood, he also wore a military-grade respirator. He tried to imagine the fear and panic of those trapped inside. They could not stay; it was only a matter of time before the night walkers eventually overran it. No, their only chance was to make a break for it, either to a more defensible position or for the freedom of the Garden State Parkway. Trouble was, there really was no defensible position against an enemy driven only by hunger, an enemy with far superior numbers. And they would find the Parkway — or any other route out of town — closed by military blockade, dispatched shortly after word leaked through back channels (of his own creation) that an extinction-level event was in its Genesis in the town. Regardless, it would be amusing to watch them try to survive, so he intermittently eyed the front and rear exits of the building, waiting for them to make their charge. They would be getting no local help, as he made sure to gut their communications system and had positioned several cellular and radio scramblers at strategic positions around town over the previous three days. Amazing what access you could gain when pretending to be a wealthy winter visitor to a summer town. And even if all else failed, which it wouldn’t, the perfectly-timed, vicious nor’easter would make any rescue nearly impossible. No, it would be a savage human endeavor, his favorite kind. So he settled in and

EACH week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting citizen (or citizens) with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. This week’s recipient is Betsy Platarella from Linwood, New Jersey. What are you doing here? I came just for the day with my husband, because it’s such a Christmasy town. How often do you come to Cape May? Twice a year. What were you doing when we interrupted? Shopping on the Washington Street Mall. What are you doing tonight? Dinner at Peter Shields Inn. When is the last time you received flowers? Valentine’s Day. How do you feel about Champagne? We only drink it on New Year’s Eve, so it’s a special moment for us. A Very Zombie Christmas ? From Page 54 awaited the inevitable. He would not have to wait long. Cape May Police HQ, City Hall, Washington Street; 4:55am KERMY Torres, for all he knew humanity’s last hope, surveyed his gritty little band of warriors with solemnity as they massed near the rear auxiliary door of the small police station. They had spent most of the last hour outfitting themselves as best as possible with the riot gear from the equipment locker, though they were woefully short of full protection, having only two full sets of helmets, shields and body armor. Fact was, one didn’t encounter a lot of riots in Cape May, and these suits were probably 40 years old, holdovers from the Vietnam era, when there actually had been a local protest or two. Why no one had thrown them away in the intervening decades Kermy didn’t know. “You ladies okay?” He asked of Lola and Carol. They both nodded, the helmets a little too big for their heads. Each wore a cop’s belt with holstered revolver and baton, loads of extra ammo, and Carol her axe, with which she’d already proven herself adept. “Good. Chris, you okay?” Chris, who had been on the brink of death, had rebounded impressively. “Hell yes,” he said. On his 6-foot, 4-inch frame were draped several handguns in their holsters, a large baton hanging from a black cop’s belt, a gym bag full of extra ammo; all items he could operate with one hand. Most impressive was the corona of bayonet blades duct taped around the stump of his right arm, which stuck out from the arm of his jacket like a video game character. “How about you, buddy?” This was directed at 5-year-old Jimmy Pratt, who looked very

tiny in Kermy’s black police jacket and watch cap with the flaps over his ears. “I’m ready, Officer Torres.” He spoke with a gravitas that would have been funny were it not so heartbreaking. “Good man,” Kermy replied, mussing his head. The child had wormed his way into Kermy’s heart these last 6 hours and it was now his mission in life to keep him safe. To the grown-ups he said, “Remember the plan; we fight our way north, to the Parkway. By then we should be clear of whatever’s causing this interference and I can radio for help. Lola, remember; your number one job is to protect Jimmy. At any cost. You understand?” Lola, pale and trembling, nodded her understanding. He continued, “Carol, you’re to guard Jimmy and Lola, keep your head on a swivel. We don’t know how many of those things are out there.” The constant, increasing thrum of zombie fists beating on the walls rose as if in answer. “But we know it’s a lot. I’ll take point. Chris, you cover our flank. Remember, we cannot break ranks; if we get too spread out they’ll pick us off quick. Keep a tight unit. Take your time. Aim for the head. Body shots do us no good and are a waste of ammo. If you have to wait for them to get close then do it.” There was a brief silence during which Kermy checked the pump shotguns slung over his shoulders and bandolier of extra ammo under his black police trench coat. With a final glance at his charges he said, “We’re all going to have a hell of a story to tell our grandkids.” They laughed. “Stay on my 6.” With that Kermy opened the rear auxiliary door and they spilled out into the parking lot. Death was soon to follow. Next Week: Zmas. Available ONLY on the Exit Zero website, exitzero.us.

The Answer Lady

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady New Years Eve again. Ugh. It seems to be a holiday aimed squarely at couples and drinkers (and/or couples who drink). I am single AND I am a teetotaler. Any ideas for how to survive this without looking or feeling like a third wheel? — Auld Lang Stan Dear Stan The Answer Lady will take a wild leap of faith and assume that your life is not ENTIRELY populated with drunken, paired-off people. (And if that IS the case, we have other issues to discuss besides what to do on New Year’s Eve.) While the Answer Lady agrees that New Year’s Eve is a drinking-centric holiday, it’s not necessarily a “couples” holiday. Well, except that kiss at midnight if one happens to be involved (and if not paired off, one could always find an obliging stranger to kiss, but the Answer

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Lady digresses). Be creative. Your options are as open as the promise of the coming year. If you want to keep it casual, get a few folks together — singles or attached, friends or family, colleagues, even — and head over to the Pilot House. Have a great dinner, then relax with the Open Mic Night group, which will entertain you into the new year. The Pilot House has several tempting nonalcoholic options for the most discerning of teetotalers, and the drinkers in your group will appreciate having a sober reveler in

Happy New Year

their midst. Or throw your own NYE gettogether. Invite some friends or neighbors over, serve some Seaside Cheese or some yummy baked goods and coffee; let those who wish to imbibe bring their own spirits. (But allow them to sleep over or call Aart’s Taxi if they have too much.) Or, kick back by yourself, pop in your favorite movie, and jot down some resolutions for the coming year. The Answer Lady has a suggestion for the top of your list: resolve to not care whether or not you look like a third wheel, ever. Dear Answer Lady I stink at New Year’s resolutions, yet I make them every year (then go about the business of breaking them). I like the idea of making resolutions, but always fail in the execution. Should I bother? — Unresolved Dear Unresolved While the idea of a new year as a clean slate is appealing, it’s quite daunting. The Answer Lady prefers the Alcoholics Anonymous approach: take your resolutions one day at a time. “I’ll eat right today,” “I’ll exercise today,” “I will not roll my eyes at people today,” etc. Good luck and Happy New Year!

’Twas the night before Christmas, and all over town People were walking around with a frown. “I’ve been to the shops and I’ve been to the mall, I’ve scoured each one, the large and the small. Reasons to Consider a Year-Round Package with Exit Zero in 2013! 1. Readership... Each week we print between 5500-7000 copies of Exit Zero and we get almost no returns... People are reading!

2. Rates... Our rates are competitive with other local publications. And by locking into a year-round package you are guaranteed our absolute lowest rate possible in 2013! Plus eye catching ad design is included in our rates.

3. Contests... We run two contests in every issue that are geared to get people looking at your ad. Here is what Jerry Kufta had to say about our Clip Art & Fake Ad Contests... “I had to scour this issue five times before I found the clip art. It was very well placed since there are top Hats on the Mad Batter, the brown room and a couple more. You are getting tuff! Making us read all of the ads. You could tell those folks who buy the ads from you that I have found several restaurants that I never knew about. Also many places that offer so much. That’s what your fake ad & clip art contest does... Good Job!”

4. Trade... We invest some of your advertising money in the form of gift certificates and use it to promote your business. It’s a win-win-win situation! Advertisers win because they save some money. Readers win because they can win some great prizes. Exit Zero wins because it gets an advertiser.

So please check out the year-round packages on the opposing page and contact Jason before the end of January to lock the lowest rate possible in 2013!

« FUN FACT... Connie Gallagher, a 12-year member of Gardening by the Sea, gave us some tips this week we thought we’d share: 1. Get out there and plant your bulbs; now is the time. This way, they’re “ready to pop out in spring.” 2. This year has been “very popular” for small evergreen trees. Tough little buggers, they can be left out all winter (as long as they’re protected from the wind). They don’t even need to be planted or fertilized until spring.

Activity Of The Week

A

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Choose your resolution

S THE movie New Year’s Eve tells us, this is a time for hope and a great party. There’s no question you can can find a great party in Cape May, but you’ll have to provide your own hope in the form of New Year’s resolutions. It’s human nature to hope for better things in the new year. January is named for Janus, the god of beginnings and endings, who could look forward and back at the same time. If you don’t like something you see when you look back, resolve to change it going forward. The United States was founded on such resolutions. Puritan Jonathan Edwards set the bar in 1720 when he compiled 70 resolutions, including “never to speak anything but the pure and simple truth” and “never to speak evil of any, except I have some particular good call for it.” As a boy, George Washington resolved to follow 109 “Rules of Civility;” and as a man he introduced resolutions opposing taxation without representation in the Virginia House of Burgesses. Our constitution has an implied resolution in its pre-

Before you vow to lose the weight or eat more veggies, why not ring it in like a rock star at Cabanas? amble, which expressed the hope for a “more perfect Union.” Don’t just hope for improvement — resolve to make a change. Cape May is the place to contemplate your resolution. Hope to spend more time with the family? Cape May in winter is free of distractions. Plan to get fit? Take advantage of the Christmas special at North Beach Health Club. Weight Watchers has meetings in nearby Rio Grande. Jog the promenade to burn calories and you might work

up to the Ocean Drive Marathon in March. Manage stress with yoga at Balance in West Cape May, or with a massage at Sea Spa. Eat organic with the help of the Cape May Organic Market. Volunteer to help others by becoming a scout leader, helping at the animal shelter, or joining a beach clean-up. Be nicer. Ask her out. Rediscover your spirituality. Contact an old friend. Pick up the instrument you haven’t touched since high school. Learn a foreign language. Read a classic. Make a change, and next year, you’ll be proud to look back on 2013. But first, say goodbye to 2012 at one of Cape May’s great parties. The Grand has an evening of dancing. Congress Hall has the Glitter Ball. Elaine’s offers a chance to see Sixteen Candelabras and party with the cast. Places like Copper Fish, the Ebbitt Room, the Mad Batter and the Washington Inn offer gourmet meals to savor. Dine early at the Merion Inn. Rock out at Cabanas. Celebrate with wings at the C-View. Cape May will bring the party, but remember to bring your own hope. Happy New Year!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

KRINGLE is a young, energetic boy, and we’re not sure why we love him so much. Maybe it’s his adorable passion for all things edible. Maybe it’s the way he looks at you with those expectant eyes (we mean... just look at them!). It’s as though he’s asking: “Why has no one taken me home yet? I’m lovable, right?” Yes, Kringle, you are, and soon, some lucky person will realize it. Is that person is you? The adoption fee is $95.

«

ROCKY came to the shelter in May, but being here made him so sad, one of the employees fostered him. That was only temporary, though, and now Rocky — who’s housebroken and good with kids and cats — needs a home. He’s a laidback older guy, meaning he’s mellow and sweet and... we have to stop typing this or we’ll end up getting him ourselves. Seniors can have him for FREE between now and Dec. 31. Otherwise, it’s $35.

HOPE is a gorgeous pit mix about 8 months old who came to the shelter in May. Her owner became sick with cancer and could no longer afford to keep her; otherwise, Hope would never have been surendered. She’s a quick learner, already housebroken, and good with dogs and cats and possibly kids, too. The adoption fee is $95 and includes a free vet visit. So why not give this little lover a reason to live up to her name.

RALPH (don’t you love when cute cats have human names?) has been at the shelter since August. He was brought in after his owner died, so he could really use a friend. Because he’s older than eight, seniors 62 years and older can adopt him for FREE until December 31. Help this cutie start the new year off in a new home.

«

VIXEN (doesn’t that name suit that mischevious face so well?) just loves to be pet. She gets so excited by it, she’ll playfully grab your hand if you try to stop which, of course, you’ll have a hard time doing. She’s the perfect reminder to appreicate the little things in life, and her adoption fee is only $35... quite a steal, if we do say so ourselves.

«

TINKERBELL loves to explore, and we think she’ll have no trouble finding her way into your heart. If you are looking for a pet, coming across this lovely lady should be about as exciting as stumbling across the fairy for which she’s named... it’s rare to find a cat this cool. Tinkerbell is up to date on all vaccines and spayed. The adoption fee is $35.

Here’s To Another Great Season

T

ADVERTISING FEATURE

HANK you, thank you, thank you! It’s been a wonderful year at Cape May Stage, and we couldn’t have done it without the support of our wonderful patrons! So many wonderful shows — this season, our stage has been the spot for captivating tales as you’ve never seen them before, in offerings like Poe, Times Two and The 39 Steps, as well as new favorites like God of Carnage and Time Stands Still. Cape May Stage has brought alive stories you’ve never before heard about the artists you admire, like jazz great Jacques Hoffman in Uncle

It’s not too late to see the holiday hit A Tuna Christmas, the final captivating show of Cape May Stage’s 2012 season

Jacques’ Symphony and the national treasure that is Emily Dickinson in The Belle of Amherst — and all within the brightest jewel in Cape May’s crown: the Robert Shackleton Playhouse. And, of course, add A Tuna Christmas — the show audiences have been calling their “new favorite Christmas show” — to the list! We are approaching the final few performances, in which master comedians Jody Cook and Turner Crumbley will once again bring their deft comedic timing, trademark characterizations, and split-second costume changing abilities to the stage. The two portray 24 citizens of Tuna, the third smallest town in Texas, where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies! It’s 24 hours before Christmas and times are tough. Bertha Bumiller’s drunken husband hasn’t come home, her kids are messes, and a Christmas phantom is destroying the town’s decorations. Add

a disaster-prone production of A Christmas Carol, and you’ve got holiday fare that would tickle the funny bones of even the most bah-humbug Scrooges. It plays through Saturday at 8pm and Saturday and Sunday at 3pm. Next season is a milestone for Cape May Stage — it’s our 25th year — and it will be our best yet! We have a season filled with star performers and world premieres on tap. Our Broadway Series will continue to be the hottest ticket in town, drawing Broadway’s biggest stars to Cape May. We’re planning a new writers’ symposium, and, of course, our Summer Theatre Discovery Camp, giving future stars the chance to shine. Packages are available — we’ll be sure to save your seat in 2013! For more information, see our website at capemaystage.org, or call 884-1341. Thanks again for a wildly successful season and have a happy New Year!

« FUN FACT... MagicBrain owner Stephen Gatier used to work in a restaurant in Vineland. When that establishment opened a café, he became interested in all things coffee. He studied the art of espresso making at Intelligencia in New York (they’re the guys responsible for sourcing, developing, roasting, and delivering what some call the best coffee in the world). Stephen learned to be a barista, and the rest is history. This holiday party, he says, was “a way to say thank you for a great first season.” Seventy-five people turned up, many of whom likely sipped on the macchiato (a steamed milk/caramel/espresso drink). “It’s our bestseller,” Stephen said.

Bird Droppings

A

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

DAY late and a dollar short. Is this the way you feel? Has this phrase come to describe your lot in life? You buy BP stock and the next day one of their oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico blows a gasket. You earn enough miles to fly you and your spouse to Paris... and they double up the miles on foreign travel. Well, your luck is about to change. For once you are not too late. In fact, you are right on time to get a head start on a year of adventure. On January 1, start a list of all the bird species you find in 2013. The name of the game is the Big Year. If that name sounds familiar, then maybe you saw the movie by the same name. But, you may be thinking: I don’t have tens of thousands of dollars to invest in a continentwide scavenger hunt. And I can’t just get up and take a year off from work to chase birds. Relax. You don’t need a Swiss bank account, and you don’t have to take a sabbatical to compile a Big Year List. All you need is ambition, binoculars, a field guide...

And a checklist to the birds. You can pick one up free at the Cape May Bird Observatory. But, you may be thinking: That only covers the birds of Cape May County! Right again. That’s why you don’t need the Swiss bank account. You can limit the geographic scope of your Big Year to Cape May County. Heck. You can limit it to the region south of the Cape May Canal. Or your back yard. It’s

your game. You decide what’s in bounds or out. The point is that on January 1, every bird is new again. If you’ve seen House Sparrow a million times (probably more), poof, it doesn’t matter — and neither does the fact that it’s a House Sparrow. If on January 1, you see a House Sparrow, that House Sparrow becomes, for that moment of glory, the most important House Sparrow you’ve ever seen. Or heard. Heard birds count on Big Year lists, too. Providing you can identify them. But if you can’t pin the name to the sound, you couldn’t check it off your list anyway, right? Doing a Big Year gives you a great excuse to Kick Off Your Year List in Cape May with the Cape May Bird Observatory. Join Mike Crewe and some great associate naturalists on an allday (don’t worry, it doesn’t start at dawn but at the reasonable hour of 10am) hunt for birds. Go with the experts. Get a really big boost on your 2013 Bird List. Ever new day during a bring year brings

Bird Droppings ? From Page 95 possibility. Every new bird to your list is a token of your skill, your pride. Every report of some avian waif an excuse to stop whatever it is that you are doing and race out to see it. How’s that for a Holiday present to Self? An excuse not to cut the lawn or do the laundry. Nothing should stand in your way the year you decide to do a Big Year. Everything becomes secondary to your ambition, your year of living wild and free. Of course, if you do want your Big Year to have a continent-wide scope, there is nothing stopping you. In fact, I know one young Cape May birder who is doing precisely that. As you read this, she is in Florida, poised and ready to start stockpiling avian booty come January 1. Anhinga... Limpkin... Short-tailed Hawk.... Snail Kite.... Don’t envy her. Emulate her. You, my Cape May birding friend, can go out and find Common Eider, Great Cormorant, Snow Bunting, Short-eared Owl... Birds that find their way to Florida so infrequently. It might be winter, but this is Cape May. It’s possible to find as many as 100 species of birds on January 1. But you’ll have to work at it — or sign up for the CMBO pro-

Owen Wilson, Steve Martin, and Jack Black did a Big Year in the aptly-named film, The Big Year. You have a chance to start your own this week. gram. Your Big Year. You are right in time, and we all have to start somewhere. And you should start with the Cape May Bird Observatory, THE place for all your nature needs. CMBO, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), is open 6-days a week from 9:30am to 4:30pm (closed on Tuesdays) beginning Wednesday, January 2. You could pick up a FREE checklist and birding map, and our seasonal schedule of events (The Kestrel Express). You can ask the staff for help or just browse around; I’m

sure something will catch your eye (bargains in the used and vintage books section, some wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, the newest HAWKS in Flight clothing for your wardrobe, etc.) If you can’t make it to Cape May, check out BirdCapeMay.org. If you do want to join CMBO’s Kick Off Your Year List, you should be at Cape May Point State Park by 9:45am on Tuesday, January 1 to meet Mike Crewe. The day goes until 5pm; cost is $25 for members of New Jersey Audubon, Cape May Bird Observatory and $35 for those less fortunate. Reservations are recommended but since the centers are closed for the holidays, just tell Mike you read about it in Exit Zero and Seymore said it’s okay. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times. PS: She may not be reading Exit Zero in Florida, but here’s a shout out to our girl Melissa! Can’t wait to hear about your first bird of the New Year!

DIAPER DRIVE Wilsey Realty A S FAMILIES in shore communities throughout the region face damaged property and mangled memories, the need for food, toiletries and other necessities continues to mount. Among the most requested items are supplies for the storm’s tiniest victims: baby formula, diapers, and wipes. Wilsey Realty is hosting its annual Diaper Drive to collect these items and other baby supplies. Community members are encouraged to join in and to drop off their donations through January 1, 2013 at 501 Lafayette Street in Cape May.

Russ and Bess Andrews

All items collected will be distributed to families in need through the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey in Cape May County and Family Promise of Cape May County.

“By uniting together, we can help alleviate a portion of the burden faced by those families most impacted by the storm, and provide much-needed resources to support the youngest members of our communities,” said Gail Wilsey, founder of Wilsey Realty. “By helping to meet immediate needs and supporting local families when they are most vulnerable, we put Cape May County on the path to recovery.” Dan Davis, Dave, Felicia and David DiIenno

« FUN FACT... Seven-year member of the Coast Guard, Frank Verrichia, was named commander of Flotilla 82, the largest Coast Guard Auxiliary unit in New Jersey, at this Change of Watch Dinner. “It’s a big responsibility,” Frank told us. The Flotilla, which was designated on December 16, 1943, was the first to teach boating safety classes to the public. It also coordinated the dedication of the Cape May Canal bridge in 1959, and conducted the first Flower Boat Ceremony on Memorial Day 1966 (not to mention every one, every year, since). Their priority has always been, and always will be, “supporting the US Coast Guard and the recreational boating community.”

12/4: Annual Beach Bum Party At Dock Mike’s

«

The Beach Bums, a group of women over 50 that’s 30 members strong, has been in existence for 15 years. During this time, they’ve put out a topless calendar which raised $14,920 for worthy organizations, including the Association for Retarded Citizens and the American Cancer Society. In 2008, they also produced the equally scandalous A Wunderful Cookbook for Beach Bums, sales of which benefited the family of local student Robbie Wunder, who became a paraplegic after a swimming pool accident. (You can still pick up a copy at Love the Cook!) “It’s all for a good cause, and we enjoy doing it,” said the organization’s “queen,” Pat Swain. “That’s my title whether I like it or not,” she told us. When we asked why the group calls themselves the Beach Bums, Pat said: “A lot of us like to go the beach.” Fair enough. Keep up the good work, ladies.
