4/7: Ride With Mark Kicks Off Around The Cape May Point Circle
«
This two-hour ride around the Cape May Point Circle was not only the official launch of Cape Island’s new bike tour service, Ride With Mark, headed up by West Cape May resident Mark Jacopec, it was a fundraiser for Hope Matters, which provides support for those who’ve lost loved ones to suicide. (They meet Monday nights at 6:30pm at the Seashore Community Church of the Nazarene.) “I was really impressed with people’s fortitude,” Mark told us. “Some of those bikes you could tell hadn’t been ridden in a while, but we all had a great time.” To celebrate this coming together for a good cause — and the beginning of biking season! — the event was followed up by a party on the deck of the Red Store. For updates on all of the Ride With Mark happenings (like their cool “What’s The Point” tour of — what else — Cape May Point)... check out the Facebook page.

Talk Of The Town
RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS
Squeaky Clean LAST week, we had our windows cleaned by Longfellow Window Cleaners, LLC, which has been around for over 16 years, and wow, were we impressed. Alix Longfellow and Shane DeVault did a superb job... especially considering how many times the Exit Zero mutts have painted our windows with their slobbery, albeit adorable, noses. Check out longfellowwindowcleaning. com.

A Cape May Feast
FOR most of us, spring cleaning means putting some elbow grease into the deepest, darkest corners of our living space… plenty of work, even if one’s space is not 92,000 square feet. That’s the size of the hangar at the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum where 22 aircraft, among other displays, currently reside. “It will take five days to clear them all out,” Director Bruce Fournier told us. “Then we’ll do about two days of prep work — our spring cleaning — to get it all nice and ready.” Ready for what, you’d like to know? On May 7, the museum will host the 13th Annual Feasting On History event, a major fundraiser for Historic Cold Spring Village, and an unofficial kick-off to Cape Island’s season. “This year, we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the village’s founding,” Kate Devaney,
HCSV’s Deputy Director of Public Relations and Programming, told us. “I think it’s important to understand where we’ve been, and to understand the experiences of our ancestors, so that we’re better able to understand where we are now. Feasting on History is a wonderful way to toast all of the preservation work the village has accomplished over the last 40 years.” Preservation work, like the saving of 26 buildings from the Early American era including, most recently, the Coxe Hall Cottage, built in 1691 and believed to be oldest surviving structure in Cape May County. In these buildings, which span 30 beautiful acres, interpreters and artisans in period clothing showcase the trades and crafts pursued in south Jersey between 1789 and 1840. “It’s especially wonderful to see children discovering history,” Kate said, “and to see them having fun that doesn’t
include an iPhone or a video game.” Part of the village’s mission, she explained, is education via school trips, classroom visits and interactive teleconferences. “In one program, kids learn about games children played in the Early American period and subjects they studied in school, but they’re always most fascinated by discipline… how a child could have been smacked across the hands with a hickory stick or forced to stand on a wooden block with a dunce cap for misbehaving or not keeping up in school.” Adults are equally enthralled by the village’s offerings. “Something I’ve learned,” Kate told us, “is that Concessions and Agreements, a text written by Jacob Spicer, Jr and Aaron Leaming, both lawyers and Cape May County residents, was a source of inspiration used in crafting the US Constitu-

WE GET it... paying for parking is just a reality in a town like Cape May, and we don’t mind doing it. Still, carting around a pack of quarters for half the year is a hugely annoying turn-off. So we were thrilled to hear that the city is looking into making Cape May compatible with the Parkmobile App, which allows you to pay a meter with a credit card from your smart phone... or to top off your meter while sitting on the beach. The city met with the Parking Committee last Friday to discuss, and now, according to member and Chamber President John Cooke, they’re in the process of researching it (what to do in areas that are reception dead zones, for instance). “It could be a home run,” he told us. The service costs .35 per transaction, paid to the Parkmobile company as a convenience fee, and we think that’s well worth the price.
New Hot Spot We’d like to extend a big welcome to Emilia’s Garden Café, which will be moving into the former Higher Grounds location on West Perry Street. And just in time, too... we’re coming up on ideal weather for al fresco dining.

Subscriber Of The Week
Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Melissa Keller of Langhorne, PA. How long have you been coming to Cape May? I think it’s probably been... since around 2000. What do you like about it? Everything is great about Cape May, but one of my favorite things is the history of the town. It’s so interesting. And I love how friendly everyone is. What’s your favorite thing about Cape May? The beach. Least favorite thing? Hard to say. I guess that would probably have to be... The parking. Or lack of. What is your favorite restaurant? Tisha’s. And your favorite store? That’s got to be the Exit Zero store! What do you like about Exit Zero? Well, I’m very happy that Terry O’Brien is back. I love to read everything he writes. But everything else in the magazine is great, too. I love everything about it. What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I’m not really sure. That’s a tough question. I don’t really read the Old Fogey, I don’t know why. There’s not any reason for it, I just don’t. What’s your T-shirt size? Medium, please. Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 tion. Pretty cool, huh? The Spicer Leaming House on the village grounds belonged to Jacob’s grandson.” So it’s fair to say that a fundraiser benefiting HSVC is a great cause… but, importantly for the approximately 700 people who will attend Feasting on History, the event is also a great time…. this due, in large part, to the 40 area restaurants who will be serving food. “It’s the highlight of the spring, as far as we’re concerned,” said Harpoon Henry’s owner Teresa Henry. “We’ve participated for the last eight or nine years, and the event seems only to be growing. It’s a lovely opportunity to mingle, and to taste the offerings of so many restaurants you may not have time to visit during the summer. You’ll see the same favorites represented every year, and always a new place or two. Many of them bring their most popular dishes.” In the meantime, the prepa-
rations continue. “Our volunteers have been wonderful,” Kate said. “One thousand invitations went out in January, and we had a group of people who spent three days stuffing those and addressing them by hand. And a couple — Liz and Merrill Miller — have volunteered to spend three weeks folding the 850 linen napkins I just ordered. They’re just awesome.” And Feasting on History will be, too, no doubt. To buy your tickets, priced at $75 per person, contact Kate at 609-898-2300, or visit hcsv.org. Oh, and if you’re wondering where all of those 22 aircraft will end up during the festivities, look no further than the 40 feet of property on the north side of the aviation museum. “These are military aircraft,” Bruce told us, “so they won’t mind a bit of rain.”
Cape May Seals
IN THE past two weeks, a couple of readers have sent us pictures of seals resting on our beaches, one near Queen Street, the other just
south of the lighthouse. We shared the photos on Facebook; 249 of you “liked” the former, and 368 of you, the latter. One hundred and seventy two shares later, we got the hint… everyone really enjoys seals. And hardly anyone, judging by the 40 mostly befuddled comments these photos garnered, is familiar with them. We called the Marine Mammal Stranding Center — a nonprofit based in Brigantine which has responded to 4,000 calls about dolphin, whale, turtle and, of course, seal, strandings in New Jersey — for more information. “It happens more than you’d think,” Seal Stranding Technician Danielle Monaghan told us. “Up and down the coastline, we see gray, harbor, and harp seals. Just today, we received three calls. Not too far offshore, like in Great Bay and the Sandy Hook barrier spit, there are several colonies.” While it’s possible the animals who come ashore are in trouble of some sort (think shark

Page 16 Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 bites, net entanglements, ingestion of plastics, illness and the like), seals on the sand are often just looking for some R and R. “The animals don’t sleep in the water, so they come out for rest,” Danielle said. “Beaches, docks, jet ski ramps… wherever they can take a nap, they will.” It’s an explanation that many have found suspect. “People want to know why a seal who’s healthy doesn’t make a break for it when they approach,” Danielle says. “The answer is that the seal doesn’t want to… it’s likely that he just swam a great distance, and he wants to take his nap.” And just for the record, it’s actually illegal to test this out. “No one is allowed within 150 feet of any marine mammal, unless you have the proper permit,” Danielle told us, explaining that the folks of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center are the only ones in the state who do.
Thursday, April 11, 2013 So how should you react when you spot a seal? “Call us, and we’ll come check out the animal, just to make sure everything is okay,” Danielle said. If it’s not, the center will rehabilitate and release it. Perhaps most importantly, remember that these are wild animals. “Seals aren’t puppies,” Danielle said. “We’ve had many cases where people have been bit… one woman in the face, another in the arm. When that happens, we have to quarantine the animal, and it’s really not fair. It’s a perfectly healthy seal.” If you simply can’t resist these adorable creatures, try adopting one of your own. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center runs a program that allows you, for a donation of $25, to secure food, medicine and care for one special seal. Check out the pictures and video on marinemammalstrandingcenter.org for a seriously awww-inducing moment. Because the seals are here in the winter, usually between November and April (they head
toward New England in the warmer months), we’re expecting to see fewer and fewer. But if you do happen to run across a rubberskinned sunbather, call 609-2660538. And send us a picture.
The Wood Man
A COUPLE of weeks ago, while pulling into Sunset Liquor to buy an outrageous amount of wine (hey, it was the weekend), we spotted 22-year-old Taylor Smith posting an advertisement for his custom-made woodworkings. We love stories about local people doing cool things, so we gave Taylor a call to find out what
he’s up to. “Right after the hurricane,” Taylor told us, “I was walking on the beach with my dogs, and I came across an Australian Red Cedar. I liked the wood so much, I wanted a way to make it into something special, and I decided a bench would allow me to keep the natural look. Since then, I’ve made eight benches, and I’m doing lamps and wood pieces for walls… I’m having fun experimenting. I’m just starting to branch out.” No pun intended. But it’s more than just a hobby; woodworking is a craft

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 Taylor’s learned from doing various construction projects on the island (he was laying 102-yearold Tarracotta tiles at the Mission Inn when we called him, and he did help his cousin build a post and beam barn house just over the Cape May Bridge from a Lincoln Log-style kit). And it’s also a talent that’s in Taylor’s blood. “My grandfather, Mickey Blomkvest, was a Cape May Mayor, and he worked on some of the most amazing places in Cape May between the 50s and the 80s, including the original Convention Halls.” Actually, Taylor’s whole family is comprised of Cape May movers and shakers. His mom, Stina Smith, owns Jersey Cape Dance Studio, and you may have seen his father, Parker Smith, acting on stage at Elaine’s Famous Dinner Theater. So it’s fair to see that Taylor — himself a graduate of Lower
Cape May Regional High School who’s been working on a commercial fishing boat out of Lund’s Fisheries since he was 18 and who serves tables at Crab House at Two Mile Landing in the summer — knows this area like the back of his hand. And he knows that what he’s offering might just appeal to your typical Cape Mayan. “This town is made of artsy people who are organicallyminded,” he told us. Plus, we’re a group who’d rather support the grassroots up-start — like the guy building benches out of his Washington Street apartment — than any kind of faceless chain. So, if you’re in the market for some cool new furniture, check out Custom Woodworks By Taylor on Facebook, or give him a call at 609-408-0563. He does do special requests. “I could never do a nine to five,” Taylor said. “But the physical act of working with my hands… I really enjoy what I do. And that the possibilities are endless.”

The Undertow
S
Terry O’Brien’s weekly column... it’s about nothing and everything, all at the same time
O SICK my flu has a cold, which has a cough. It’s been a lovely, lovely, just beautiful week here at Undertow Central. First I zapped all my Undertow notes from my phone AND my computer (a real shame, because everything I write is perfect and hilarious), but then I went and got as sick as I’ve been since the last time I was this sick. So if I’m a little cranky this week, as opposed to my usual bright, cheerful, sunny self, you’ll know why. Things got off to a rollicking start with the opening of Morey’s Piers for Easter Weekend. Saturday was absolutely beautiful and throngs, I mean throngs of people took advantage and poured onto the deck at Mariner’s Landing to enjoy some rides and get their first corn dogs and funnel cakes of the season. My attraction, Ghost Ship, isn’t open until May 4, so I spent most of the day operating The Flying Galleon (the little pirate ships that go around the water park) and I hardly even broke it! For such a simpleseeming ride, it is quite the sophistimicated
doo-whackey. Me and a Thailander named ‘Mac’ must have run 1,000 people through that thing. Sadly, I scared none of them. Sunday, however, was the opposite of this. First, I was completely exhausted (for reasons discussed later). Second, it was miserably cold. Third, rain. But… a few hundred brave souls enjoyed what rides they could before the weather forced us to close early. While it was a bummer to have Easter Sunday rained out, it was nice to get home to my warm, empty house to celebrate Easter my way. Easter Tradition of the Week: See, I work all Easter weekend on the pier so the wife has taken to loading up the kids and going
up to her mom’s in Turnersville, leaving me with an empty, quiet house for the five hours I’m able to stay awake after work. For three years now my Easter dinner has consisted of a Domino’s pizza and a couple of those heinously delicious chocolate lava cakes. Which makes Easter Sunday my best Christmas present of the year. Thank You of the Week: To Domino’s. For being open on Easter. I had a real, no-fooling, white knuckle drive home from the pier as I passed the Wildwood McDonald’s, the Rio Grande Burger King, and had to use two hands to turn onto my street and not keep going to the North Cape May McDonald’s. But, I did, and maintained my streak of having had fast food once (New Year’s) in the last 466 days. In between Morey’s shifts I managed to squeeze in this little thing I like to call Billy Joel Night at the Anglesea Pub and MAN was it fun. I love, love, love The Beatles, but I just have a more personal connection to Mr. Joel, so this was the show I’d always dreamed of

playing. And I’d like to sincerely thank all the open mic-ers who no-showed because I got to sing their songs. The band was tight, the crowd was into it, and man I just had a ball. The Anglesea is a very, very, very intimate space (I may have impregnated three dancers. Sorry.) and the acoustics are phenomenal. Thanks to Mike O’Brien, (the late) Will Knapp (Ding!), Al Olivero, Walt Sapisi, Jr and Greg Dress for their hard work. Can’t wait to do it again. Thanks also to the large contingent of Morey’s folk who migrated down for the show (Melissa, Colleen, Kyle, Will B., Jordan, Zack, Torsten, any I’ve forgotten), who truly make Morey’s a family. Don’t forget Beatles Night III is coming up on April 20 at the Bayshore Inn, 9pm-1am. If you want to sign up to perform look me up on Facebook or find the event and drop an email. The more the merrier! Anyway, I got through my five-gig, 80-hour work week, got home Sunday, scarfed my pizza, curled up with a blanket to watch The Walking Dead finale (terrible episode, still a great show), slept for 13 hours and… woke up with the flu. Fun! I was a walking dead for the better part of three days; I’d like to thank my wife and kids for not braining me in gruesome yet entertaining fashion. After a few days of overthe-counter medicating and zero recovery, I headed to Cape Urgent Care at the urging of my wife (half because I think she was truly worried about my health, half because I think she wanted my stinky, whiny ass out of the house for an hour), where I was treated by Dr. Teresa Carlin, an attractive, professional, serious-minded doctor person, and we proceeded to talk about my poop for 15 minutes (frequency, duration, consistency, etc.). Really… really a fun time. In the end they charged me $40 to tell me to drink Gatorade. And I was still whiny and stinky. Still am.
Rio Station Open Mic Recap of the Week: So at the (perfectly reasonable) request of Will Knapp, I asked Rio Station to not bill Thursday Open Mic as Acoustic Mayhem when he is not playing (there has been some confusion when people come to see Acoustic Mayhem and Bill Caterini is playing, leading to speculation over Will being fired/having quit/tearfully resigned/ gotten beheaded in the town square). “Of course,” Rio Station says. “No problem!”* So they bill us as Open Mic with Bill and Terry. Then Bill calls out, Will subs in, and now it’s a whole morass… every show from now on will be Terry and _ill. (*Rio Station is not a sentient being. This would be an allegory. I think.) Regardless, we had another fun show, highlighted by the pre-CD release show by local outfit Urethra Franklin, who are led by Brandon Smith (sound man for our Beatles shows). Their disc becomes available… sorry, drops on the 16th via iTunes, Amazon or Best Buy and is called Welcome to Rio Grande. They played some original tunes and covers and they all sounded pretty great. Grab/download the disc if you get a chance. And buy them a beer; they sank their life savings into the CD. Douchebag of the Week: Every single solitary one of you who pulls into Wawa for gas, then goes inside for your coffee and pink-frosted, chocolatedipped, jelly-filled sugar la-la. Bonus points for doing so in your pajama pants and slippers. Douche. Bag. North Beach Health Club Update: It’s this rotten flu that kept me away from the gym, not a lack of want-to. Assuming I get better and live through the weekend, I’ll get back at it on Monday. I ran into Mark Chamberlain at Avalon Coffee in North Cape May and he can vouch for how terrible I looked. That’s all for this week. I’m sure by reading this I’ve given you the flu. Enjoy! Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Twenty-seven juniors and seniors from Lower Cape May Regional High School were invited to show their work — mixed-media collages — at the Villas branch of the Cape May County Library, according to art teacher Patricia Neville. In order to include as many kids as possible, she invited eighth grade students from Richard M. Teitelman Middle School, who completed self-portraits in pencil, to showcase as well. Elementary students from Charles W. Sandman School came along to look at the artwork and ask questions of the older students. “The kids were just beaming,” Patricia told us. “We want to get as many kids excited about art as possible... this is going to be an annual event.” PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
FOR one am not against the proposed scrapping of the summer beach charge in our fair city, but I am not sure that the planned replacement — a “blue sky tax” — is exactly fair, or what our forefathers had in mind when they broke away from Mother England. On the one hand, I have never believed it right that people should be charged money just for indulging the primal urge of dipping one’s toes in the briny Atlantic. On the other hand I have visited beaches in Europe, where they are not huge believers in paying for someone to trundle back and forth in a little tractor raking garbage/food/seagulls/drunken Shoebies off the sand. And the experience of stumbling through knee-deep drifts of plastic bottles, used sanitary unmentionables and uranium fuel rods (to be fair that was just the once, and there was, in retrospect, a certain folly in insisting on sunbathing in front of England’s notorious Sellafield nuclear power station) was not a pleasant one. And yes, I appreciate that a city needs to replace lost income. And yes, again, peo-
ple come here for the blue sky and so on a sunny day, when they are out walking our streets and causing minute but real wear and tear to the ancient paving stones, they really should be compensating us for the trouble. Also, on such days, which will be measured as taxable when there is less than 12 percent of cloud cover in the sky for an uninterrupted hour, the conditions will be perfect for the soon-to-be-delivered aerial drone which has been bought and customized for the very purpose of spotting visi-

tors who have not purchased and affixed to their heads the special ref lective day-pass. Obviously, the drone’s pervious payload of Hellfire missiles has been taken out and replaced with precision-aimed dyepots, which will stain the head of the cheats for several months. And really, there have been more draconian taxes in Cape May in the past. Does noone recall the Saltwater Taffy tax? The “thinking you’re better than your neighboring cities” tax? (I paid a lot on that one, I can assure you) or the “small dog tax” designed to penalize those chaps who prefer canine company over human? So really, this new blue sky toll is not the worst infringement of human rights imaginable (our “break the law and you will be relocated to Wildwood” law — repealed after only six months on the grounds of it being a cruel and unusual punishment — was the most severe). Also, we are recruiting for drone pilots: applications, please, in writing to “The Editor” of this fine publication stating name, and why you should be allowed to drop ordnance on people’s heads.

The Harbor View does a themed dinner every year... in the past, the motif has been everything from games to beer to vodka. On the 21st, the restaurant tried to get attendees in a summer frame of mind with the theme of Islands Around the World. Folks turned up in Hawaiian shirts, and the Harbor View provided the leis and the coconuts... what else would you drink from at a dinner like this? Chefs prepared seven courses, all inspired by islands across the equator, according to Manager Irene Gibbons, including Bora Bora, Cape Verde, New Caledonia, Jamaica, Hawaii, and the Galapagos. “Everybody loved the mofongo, a curried goat dish,” she told us. Need something else to get you in a summer mood? The Harbor View’s deck opens May 3... and the restaurant has a brand new lunch menu to boot.

The Easter Bunny was good to the kids who turned up for the Kiwanis Club’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt... Kiwanians spent an hour helping him carefully hide 1,600 eggs on the lawn of Cape May City Elementary underneath a blanket of straw and hay... after they spent approximately 45 minutes helping him to stuff them with 36 pounds of candy! (Thanks to Bill Smigo for calculating the weight for us.) “But it only took about two minutes for the kids— pre-K to third grade— to find them all,” said Kiwanis member Frank Acker. “They absolutely loved it.” And just how many kids were there? “It felt like thousands,” Frank said.

Book Gift Certificate Giveaway
Every week, we ambush an unsuspecting citizen (or citizens) with a gift certificate to Cape Atlantic Book Company Who are you? Annette! I’d rather not give out my last name. Where are you from? I’ve lived in Cape May for the past two years. What were you doing when we interrupted you? Just taking some photos of Sunset Beach on this beautiful, sunny day. How often do you come here? Quite a bit in the spring, when there’s not too many people around. What’s the best place tin Cape May to eat? The Lobster House. The last book you read? Tell No One, by Harlan Coben. How do you choose a book? I usually ask for recommendations, but I’m a big fan of mystery novels... I like to solve it before the end, and I’m pretty good at it! PHOTOGRAPH AND INTERVIEW BY GABI URDA

Here’s To Your Health
A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club
P
ERFORMANCE enhancing drugs have been around for decades, yet their impact on professional sports, both on the field and in reputation off the field, is at an all-time high. Even stranger is that we seem “shocked” anew each time one of the sporting world’s “heroes” admits to using. I went to a baseball game last year with a fan whose box seats allow for the up-closeand-personal experience. In the 20-plus years he’s been going to these games, he says, the players have become increasingly large, to the point where there are really no more skinny players at any position. Norman Rockwell’s lanky ball player is long gone. Can this all be attributed soley to better nutrition and newer weight training techniques? Not likely. Perhaps it’s a one-of-a-kind-leap in evolution? There are two categories of steroids: Corticosteroids, like prednisone, are commonly prescribed to treat various ailments both internally and topically. Most of us have used one of these at least once in our lives. Anabolic and Androgenic steroids are prescribed to increase the growth of muscle. HGH
is used to increase bone growth in people born with shorter than normal limbs. They all work exceedingly well and all carry with them possible side effects from over use or abuse such as: Gynecomastia (breast growth on men), high blood pressure, enlarged prostate, acne and aggression. This last one is often a point of contention with steroid users. They claim the science doesn’t bear this out. (They might fight you over this). HGH has the distinction of being undetectable by a urine sample; it requires a blood test. But the tests do happen and the choreographed responses are either: outright denial (a la Lance Armstrong, BO... Before Oprah), “It was something I bought at

GNC!”, or a tell-all book. Christopher Bell’s documentary Bigger, Stronger, Faster is a fairly in-depth study. If performance enhancement is the issue, he asks, then are things like vitamins, since they help increase energy, also considered performance enhancers? It sounds like a silly argument at first. Then he interviews musicians in a symphony orchestra and finds that some of them take prescription drugs prior to a performance to calm tnerves. How do we determine what should be allowed into “the game” and what should be prohibited? One school of thought is to allow professional athletes to legally use whatever they want, under medical supervision. This would take the hypocrisy out of it, at least. One area that there seems to be little disagreement about is keeping kids away from anabolics. Friday Night Lights, the popular TV show, highlighted one football player who was told he was too small to play at the college level, so he purchased steroids. Supposedly his coach didn’t know. In the real world though, everyone on a team knows when someone is “using”. It’s time we stop pretending.

The Answer Lady
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady, In January, my boyfriend and I, along with our friends, “Dick” and “Jane,” rented a house in Cape May for this summer. Well, fast-forward to March, and my boyfriend and I are history. It’s a long story, but let’s just say that we won’t be getting back together before Memorial Day. Or ever. We had planned to use the vacation house almost every weekend, as well as for a two-week stretch in July, and have all kinds of foursome fun. Now, it will just be me and them. That’s bad enough, but here’s the kicker: Dick and Jane’s relationship can be kind of… tempestuous. How do I avoid becoming the designated tension diffuser? — Third Wheel Dear Wheel Okay, first things first. In the “third wheel” department, please rediscover the pleasure of your own company. Get up and

out of the house early for a nice walk and a peaceful breakfast, perhaps after a stroll on the promenade. (Take reading material. The Answer Lady recommends a current issue of Exit Zero, of course). If you’re not the early riser type, maybe an after-dinner bike ride. In other words, find something solitary that you truly enjoy, and try to do it at approximately the same time each day. This way, Dick and Jane can count on some alone time at relatively regular intervals, and you can get out of their way while doing your own
thing. As to the designated tension diffuser issue... ugh. Nothing distresses the Answer Lady more than the uncivilized behavior of quarreling in front of others. There is (almost) never any reason for it. You are under no obligation to run interference between Dick and Jane. If you happen to be trapped in some nonsense drama, just wait until there is a wee break in the action, laugh, shake your head, and say “Gee, I sure don’t miss this bulls!@t.” Then make a break for it. Hello Answer Lady, My husband and I have a five-year-old son, and after several years of trying, are overjoyed that we are now expecting again. While our son is obviously too young to understand the specifics, he knows he’ll soon have a new sibling. Is there anything we can do to ward off any potential jealousy? — Mommy Dear Mommy The Answer Lady is the oldest of four and also quite elderly. To this day she has not adjusted to the arrival of her siblings. So… no.

The Movie Column
W
This week, Arts Editor Tom Sims presents his tribute to Roger Ebert
E LOST a great film critic and historian as Roger Ebert passed away last week at the age of 70 after a long battle with cancer. Although I’m dating myself, I can tell you that Siskel & Ebert was one of my favorite television shows growing up. Those two great critics discussed films with such meaningful insight. And it was so much fun when they argued! I was so enamored of the duo that when Siskel died, I never had the same affinity toward whoever took his place. Sure, I’d still watch the show, but it never had the same fervor as the two of them getting into it over a film they disagreed on. The entertainment industry is mourning the loss — even the president expressed his sadness. Now there are published reports about Ebert’s favorite films, and it’s interesting to see which were his top picks throughout his 50 years of critique. Some I agree with, most I do not, but the man definitely knew how to get his point
Renowned film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert across. Here are some of his best criticisms. I aspire to write such compelling reviews! Godzilla, 1998: “Going to see Godzilla at the Palais of the Cannes Film Festival is like attending a satanic ritual in St. Peter’s Basilica.” Battlefield Earth, 2000: “Battlefield Earth is like taking a bus trip with someone who has needed a bath for a long time. It’s
not merely bad; it’s unpleasant in a hostile way.” Armageddon, 1998: “No matter what they’re charging to get in, it’s worth more to get out.” The Brown Bunny, 2003: “I had a colonoscopy once, and they let me watch it on TV. It was more entertaining than The Brown Bunny.” The Last Airbender, 2010: “The Last Airbender is an agonizing experience in every category I can think of and others still waiting to be invented.” Freddy Got Fingered, 2001: “This movie doesn’t scrape the bottom of the barrel. This movie isn’t the bottom of the barrel. This movie isn’t below the bottom of the barrel. This movie doesn’t deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence with barrels.” We have the second part of spring movie preview that I moved to next week to dedicate this column to a guy who I loved to watch review and (as you can see) beat the crap out of films.

Activity Of The Week
C
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Visit Historic Cold Spring Village
APE May began hosting vacationers in the middle of the 19th century, when visitors from Philadelphia and other steamy cities sought the ocean breezes of cool Cape May. But even before the tourists arrived, locals were making a living on farms and in small communities all across the cape. Get a taste of what life was like in the “era of homespun” with a visit to Historic Cold Spring Village. HCSV is an outdoor living history museum located three miles north of Cape May. Its mission is to recreate the daily life of Americans from 1789 to 1840. About five million people lived in the new nation, spread between the Atlantic Ocean and the frontier, which began at the Appalachian Mountains. There was room for bustling port cities, crowded with exotic goods from all around the world, and isolated 10-acre farms growing nothing more exotic than beans, turnips, and squash. Slavery was legal. Women could not vote. Children worked beside their parents and, though literacy rates were high, school was a luxury. As the era ended, Queen Victoria
Get your homespun on at Historic Cold Spring Village had just ascended the throne. HCSV recreates the period with skilled craftspeople working in its 26 restored buildings, and hands-on activities to take visitors back in time. HSCV is mainly a summer destination — the full Tuesday through Sunday schedule runs from June 18 through Labor Day — but events like their free spring lecture series, with talks on Pine Barrens, the Civil War, the Coast Guard, and Jersey Shore food, remind us that

their mission is year round. HCSV is committed to history education, historic preservation and heritage tourism. HCSV also hosts thousands of school children on field trips every year, conducts classroom visits within Cape May County, and uses videoconferencing to reach far-away students. Now is the time to become a member of HCSV, so you can enjoy benefits like free admission all summer long — membership options include $30 for an individual, and $75 for a family, including up to six children or grandchildren. And, if one of those children is interested, there is a junior apprentice program, which allows kids to learn and practice the period crafts and trades. More information is available at hcsv.org. Fans of HCSV can support the museum at the annual fundraiser, Feasting on History, on May 7 (see Talk of the Town on page 13 for more on this). This event, held at the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum, features signature dishes from 40 area restaurants and beer and wine tastings of 100 varieties from local distributors. RUDY is a young German Shepherd mix, only eight months old. He was brought to the shelter because his family couldn’t afford to take care of him. They owned him since he was six weeks old, and he was never introduced to many people. Because of this, Rudy has a bit of social anxiety, so he has be slowly introduced to new folks. But once he gets to know you, he’ll warm up quickly! His adoption fee is $95.
«
PENNY is a three-year-old pit bull terrier, and a graduate of the shelter’s obedience program. She has learned to roll on her back for a belly rub, sit, wait and watch for her trainer’s cues when walking on the road. Now that she has graduated, Penny is waiting eagerly for someone to take her to her new home. If you are interested in this welltrained, eager-to-please pup, why not visit her at the shelter? Her adoption fee is $95.

«
KRINGLE, named for his arrival at the shelter on Christmas Eve of 2011, is a three-year-old boxer and pit bull mix. At first, he was rowdy and unmanageable at the end of a leash, but his participation in the shelter’s obedience program has made walking with him a pleasure. He would do especially well with a family that wants the companionship of a pet to share in their daily exercise and outdoor activities. His adoption fee is $95.

GILDA may be a little shy and reserved when you first meet her... but she really enjoys being pet, and if she knows you well, held. Gilda is declawed, making her even more cuddly (if possible). She would make a great lap cat! If you’re looking for a more low-key pet to settle down and enjoy the finer things, her adoption fee is only $20.
«
SIMBA is a very sweet older gentleman who is just a little bit nervous around new people. But if you give him a chance to get to know you, you’ll find that he’s a big, friendly ball of fur. If you think you can spare some time and love for a guy down on his luck, stop by the shelter and give him a chance. His adoption fee is only $20.
Supported in part by a grant from New Jersey Department of State, Division of Travel and Tourism
«
ROMEO has been at the shelter for almost two years. He is quite unique, sporting a beautiful solid black coat, green eyes, and absolutely no tail! With such an interesting look, he’s one cool cat. He gets along fairly well with other pets, now all he needs is a human companion! His adoption fee is only $10.

3/28: Soft Opening Of Cape May Honey Farm On Sunset Boulevard
«
The best seller on opening day at Sunset Boulevard’s newest shop, Cape May Honey Farm, was, not surprisingly, the local honey harvested from the bees of owners Andi and Doug Marandino. We picked some up for ourselves and it is delicious, but we also couldn’t resist the New Jersey pollen for sale. “Pollen has a lot of proteins and amino acids, and it’s the only plant source of vitamin B12, which is needed for the production of red blood cells and for the functioning of the nervous system,” Andi told us. Another great bonus? “It’s being used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s patients, because it’s such a great memory booster,” Andi explained. Pollen tastes like flowers, and it’s just a bit grainy, so Andi recommends sprinkling it on top of yogurt, cereal, or a sald, or mixing it into your morning smoothie. We recommend visiting Cape May Honey Farm to check out the rest of their cool offerings...

3/23: Reception For Connie Mahon At The Red Store
«
Congratulations to Connie Mahon on her new job as Business Administrator for Middle Township. For the last 13 years, Connie has served Cape May Point as Borough Clerk and Administrator, but she wore so many hats... Registrar, Water and Sewer Utility Clerk, Election Officer, Public Trust Administrator, COAA Housing Officer, and Licensing Official among them. “She had the broadest knowledge of anyone in town on the way municipal goverment works,” Deputy Mayor Anita vanHeeswyck said. “She knew everyone in Cape May Point, and she did her best for them, always. With her deep curiosity, she found answers to everything. It brings me to tears to think that we’ve lost her.” But Anita is quick to mention that Connie’s replacement — Kim Hodsdon — is “wonderful,” and that the Point is lucky to have her. Best wishes, Kim and happy trails, Connie.
