4/18: Forum On The Green — Farm-To-Table Dinner This seasonally-inspired meal, done in conjunction with Slow Food South Jersey as a fundraiser for the 2013 Cape May Forum, will feature the tasty concoctions of the Blue Pig Tavern’s Executive Chef Jeremy Einhorn, who will utilize fresh produce from West Cape May’s Beach Plum Farm. 6-9pm at Congress Hall. 4/19: Casino Night This Boardwalk Empire-style night of food, music, and gambling will benefit Wildwood Catholic High School. Live music and auction. Since there is already a Rudy in our group— a 14-year old German Shepherd mix we got from the Cape May County Animal Shelter in November of 2011, we call the new guy Rudytoo, which is fitting, because he’s too cute for words... see the picture on the left.

What’s The Deal?

Rudytoo takes a rare (really rare) nap under a desk at EZ Global Headquarters. When he’s not resting, he’s romping on the beach, running up and down stairs for no real reason, and playing ball with the other Exit Zero mutts.

Bugging Out IF YOU’VE been reading the papers lately, maybe you’re bracing yourself for insect catastrophe. We’re referring to the 17-year cicadas known as Brood II which have been growing underground for — you guessed it — 17 years.

They’ll emerge locust-style — up to one billion of them per square mile, according to the The Huffington Post — when the soil reaches 64 degrees. A repulsive siege, in the oh-so-scary words of the news media, will take over the east coast, from the Carolinas to New York, essentially ruining your summer and your lunch.

The Philly Post predicted a Garden State Parkway covered in “an apocalyptic swarm of screeching bug-missiles on rumspringa.”

So… should you be hiding your children? Packing up and heading west? Plugging your ears with balls of cotton when you sleep?

We called an expert to find out what we can expect in Cape May. “You can expect to be disappointed,” said Michael Raupp, Professor of Entomology at the University of Maryland. Uh-oh, we thought… We’re really in for it.

“Cape May is a little out of the range. The nearest counties to you guys that will experience the Brood are Atlantic, Cumberland, and Burlington.”

Huh? Then why should we disappointed, we asked of Michael. Sounds to us like we dodged a bullet. Or, in the words of The Philly Post, billions of bug missiles. We’re avoiding a summer of sweeping crunchy exoskeletons from our porches... that’s what the 17-years leave behind after they mate and die, according to National Geographic. And we’re bypassing the deafening song the male cicadas create when courting the females… a noise that will cause permanent hearing dam-

age, according to Gizmodo.com.

“You’ll be disappointed because you’ll be missing the splendor of the cicadas,” Michael said. “I want people to stop thinking of this as the seventh plague and, rather, as a really cool natural phenomenon. Nowhere else in the known universe experiences such a synchronized emergence after an extremely long period of time, where the strategy of a species is to fill all the bellies of its enemies and still have enough of itself left over to reproduce. Safety in numbers is an unusual tactic in the animal world. This event has everything… life, death, birth, sex, drama. It’s better than reality TV.” Okay… but what about the blacking out of the sun by cicada swarms we’ve been reading about? “Oh god,” Michael said, “It’s not going to be like The

SPEAKING of dogs, we can’t help but notice that, since some of the trash cans have been taken down at Higbee’s Beach for the off-season, certain dog owners are leaving their puppy’s poop bags in a little pile at the corner of the gravel parking lot overlooking the ferry... which kind of defeats the purpose of picking it up at all, don’t you think? There IS still a trash can at the Higbee’s Beach entrace at the end of New England Road... Is it asking too much that folks ditch their doggie detritus here?

But what’s your favorite?

The beach. We’re very specific... we like the one in front of the beach patrol headquarters.

Least favorite thing? Parking in the summer, but we’ve learned to deal with it.

What is your favorite restaurant? We just had dinner at the Pier House and loved it... from the bar, we were able to look at the ocean. We also love the Black Duck, Gecko’s, 410 Bank Street... and we love the flounder at the Ugly Mug! And your favorite store? I think Casale’s is the best shoe store in the world.

What do you like about Exit Zero? It keeps us in shore mode throughout the winter. The Old Fogey is very funny.

What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? My husband says it’s right-wing, but I don’t see it that way! [Editor’s Note: Now, THAT is a new one!]

Hey, I lived through the 60s, and I can still hear. The only way you’ll experience permanent damage is to stick one in your ear, and that, I don’t recommend. The cicadas aren’t going to harm you or your pets, and they aren’t going to hatch in your house.” In fact, the only things the cicadas might damage are orchard plants, since inside the branches is where they like to lay their eggs. “They do affect the quality of life, though,” Michael said. “They improve it.”

Still, there will be people who will be utterly freaked. “Entomophobia is a real phobia,” Michael said. “I’ve heard from psychologists and psychiatrists that people are going to struggle with this.” So what’s a bug-fearing soul to do?

Michael recommends talking with a counselor, and learning as much as one can about the cica-

das. And if all else fails? “Think of this as a cool antidote to the dastardly mosquitoes that plague south Jersey,” Michael said. “And take a trip to Cape May.”

Beach Book

WE READ a study recently that said when you’re just about to give up on a project, tack on an extra 15 minutes of trying, and your chances of success increase exponentially. Just 15 minutes.

Of course, there are those people who keep at a project for 15 years.

That’s how long Cape May local Carol Fragale Brill— whose work has been recognized by Poets and Writers and Philadelphia Stories— worked on her first novel, Peace By Piece, now available for purchase.

“I had a burning desire or passion… I don’t know what else to call it,” she told us. “I just knew there was a book inside of me.”

Carol, originally from Philadelphia, started coming to Cape May to visit the mother of her future husband, Jim. “I was more of a Margate girl at that point,”

she told us. “And every time we’d pass that exit, I’d think, Why can’t your mother live here? But I just fell in love with the area, and 15 years ago, we moved down here permanently.”

Though the book is set in a fictional town, Carol says she was impacted by her surroundings. “I always wanted to live near a beach,” she said. “Having achieved that goal, I think I was more confident that I could achieve other goals, like finishing this story.”

Finishing the story and, in the process, offering female readers especially a character with whom they can connect. “When I started the novel,” she told us, “I thought the book was really about a woman with an eating disorder. But as the character and plot evolved, that became just one part. It’s a love story, and it’s about relationships. It’s the story of a woman dealing with everyday stuff women deal with.”

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 there’s the challenge of balancing one’s writing life with one’s work... Carol served as HR Director for AtlantiCare before moving into organizational development and leadership coaching. But for the Cape May author, there’s an added obstacle. “Living here,” she said, “there are lots of opportunities to have company during the summer, so I always let friends know that they’re welcome to be here, and I’ll come out to cook for them, but that on Saturdays, I work on the book in my off-limits office.”

In her office, or on the beach, that is. “I’d bring my notebooks and do some writing in front of the lighthouse,” Carol said.

“There, it doesn’t feel like work.

There’s a joke in my family that I’ll set up a stand and sell books next to my beach chair this summer.”

You might have met Mike and his wife Nicole Pense, owners of Bliss Organic Ice Cream.

They’re the couple who, before settling in Cape May for good, launched a cross-country search for the the perfect place to raise a family (a story we documented in one of our color issues).

It all started more than three years ago, back when Mike and Nicole were full-fledged New Yorkers living the fast-paced city life. Mike, a skilled trombone player, worked as part of the orchestra for a Broadway show and taught at Juilliard in the high school division. Nicole ran an agency matching special education teachers to kids with special needs. But after Sage, the couple’s first child, was born, they decided it was time to start over in a family-friendly small town.

Enter the cross-country journey that, after he quit his job and she gave up her business, would take Mike and Nicole to

all 50 states. In each one, they interviewed a couple who has been together 50 years or more, with the hopes of turning the interviews into a book that would enhance the relationships of all who read it. Everywhere, they kept an eye out for the ideal place to settle down, although they had a feeling they’d probalby landin San Franciso.

The very first interview took place in Cape May, and the last happened nine months later, in California, that place the couple thought they’d be most taken with.

But, by that time, they knew what they’d been looking for had been in front of them all along.

“I don’t know how we didn’t realize it,” Mike told us. “When I was a kid, my parents bought a house in Cape May and it was a second home for 10 years. While my wife and I were dating, I took her there and she loved it, so we went to visit all the time from New York City. We even got mar-

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 ried there. I think we were just so set on leaving the East coast, we didn’t notice that the perfect place for us was right there. This place is a rarity. It packs a lot of culture into a small space.”

But the trip was not for naught. “We love organic food,” Mike said. “And on the road we were always looking for homemade food, if not organic. When we were discussing what to do for work, Nicole mentioned the idea of an ice cream shop.”

She started making the sweet stuff at home, before selling it at Big Wave Burrito and the Cape May Farmer’s Market.

Shortly thereafter, the couple opened their Park Boulevard and Carpenter’s Lane locations.

Add two more kids to the mix, along with that book they’re still working on, and you’d think Mike and Nicole were busy enough... but what’s one more (uber-cool) undertaking?

“It felt weird to go without playing for so long,” said Mike, who took a short hiatus from his trombone while on the road.

“So I started to play again, and by the time we settled in Cape May I wanted to get back into it.” He became a regular performer at the Merion Inn, and in the Baltimore and New Jersey Symphonies. After reconnecting with friends in the music business, Mike got an offer to play for Matilda on Broadway. Since February, he’s been commuting from Cape May to New York several times a week. “I’m doing what I always wanted to do. Play music and live at the beach.”

Now, the family is thinking about finding a second home in New York, so that the kids will get to experience the buzz of the city along with the calm of Cape May. “This new job is a great way to get New York back in our lives, and at the same time, keep our roots in Cape May,” Mike said.

“This place is important to us.”

xit Zero Subscriber of the Week: Melissa Keller of Longhorne, Pennsylvania. Melissa exemplifies the type of person we want subscribing to our magazine; talented, smart, sexy as all get out… but beyond her physical beauty (like that of a sunset made of unicorns) is her intellect, wit, and keen powers of observation.

Melissa is no less than a superhero among mortals, a goddess among men, an Einstein is a sea of Bidens. And her taste in writers is unimpeachable. (She picked me as her “Favorite Thing About Exit Zero” last week… but that has nothing to do with this…)

Snub of the Week: My good friend (and bitter rival) Chris South, who runs the Cape May Star and Wave, failed to include a photo of my incredibly handsome mug in his photo essay on Billy Joel Night at the Anglesea Pub last weekend (or two weeks ago… it’s all kind of fuzzy). He also omitted me from his coverage of Beatles Night II in February, and the only picture of me from Beatles Night I was labeled “the great big head” (a 3rd Rock From the Sun reference). This from a man for

whom I sacrificed “Piano Man”. Et tu, Chris?

Et tu? That’s okay, just wait ’til he tries to sign up for Beatles Night CMVII… I’ll only give him two songs! That’ll show him…

While on the topic of music and my involvement therein, now’s a good time to tell you that you only have a couple of weeks left to catch my acoustic open mic shows at Rio Station (Thursdays, 9pm-1am) and Westy’s (5-8pm) as I will be stepping away from both at the end of April (whether or not they will carry on without me was TBD as of this writing, though I urge both places to keep it going through the summer). Rio Station has really started finding its legs as an open mic venue and it would be a shame

to cut it off now that it’s just starting to find itself. And Westy’s, though less successful as an open mic, has turned into quite a fun little happy hour gig and a relaxing way to kick of the weekend. But… we don’t know if they’ll be around after April, so I suggest you come support them NOW. While I generally play these gigs with either _ill or _ill, our little duo has recently become a trio with the addition of Geoff Moran on the… well, they’re not exactly drums, and they’re not exactly congas or bongos… you just have to see them. They’re percussion and they make noise when you hit them. Geoff is a super nice guy whose thump-thumping has added a nice layer to our acoustic musings. He’s also a good guy, and, most importantly, unpaid.

My Terry O’ke Fridays at Rio Station have calmed down a bit now that more and more places are opening up for the season but my goodness, for a couple of months there it was complete madness. A good, solid, busy karaoke night includes a full bar and 10-12 singers, all rotating nicely over

three to four hours and getting to sing about four songs each. At the Rio I was AVERAGING 25 singers a night and two-hour waits and one to two songs each. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that two-hour waits between some singers is not an altogether bad thing and sometimes not long enough… but I also try to recognize that, for some people, this is their moment. And who am I to deny?

Congratulations to my colleague and bitter arch nemesis DJ Jimmy J as he begins work for the US Postal Service. Might I suggest a new DJ name? DJ Postal: He Delivers! (Eh? Eh?) And while I’m still on the topic of music... I’ll be returning to Congress Hall’s Boiler Room for Kiddy O’ke on Thursday and Sunday evenings, and grown-up Terry O’ke Thursday nights, all starting June 26. The Sunday show will be hosted by my friend Shannon Vail, who is super-nice, positive and outgoing. Sadly, I have to pay her.

That same week will see the debut of Mike Dempsey’s 80s Open Mic show. Mike has been on the forefront of the Cape May County open mic scene the last few years, putting shows together and making them work through the sheer power of his will (he’d be an awesome Green Lantern) and there’s no reason to think he’s going to do any less here. The Boiler Room is lucky to have him.

By the time you read this, we will be but scant hours from the start of Beatles Night III over at the Bayshore Inn in North Cape May (Saturday, 9pm-1am). I was worried that interest in a third Beatlesthemed night in four months would flag a bit, but so far all signs point to a crowded roster of performers and (hopefully) an even more crowded bar (the more the bar makes, the more the band makes… and have you tried the Johnny Walker Blue?).

We changed the format a little this time around, allowing certain performers an extra song or two, and in doing so squeezed

out a few people who performed at Beatles Night I and II. For this I apologize, but we hope you’ll still come out and support the cause.

This will be our FINAL Beatles (or any other) show this spring as we, the band, enter into our crazy summer schedules, so be sure to come out and catch this one if you missed the first two. In case I get drunk and forget, I want to mention now what an honor and privilege it’s been working with Al Olivero (drums), Terry Dougherty (bass) Will Knapp (guitar/ keyboard/ding) and Mike O’Brien (lead guitar/brother), as well as how much fun it’s been. Our next show is October 13, theme TBD, but I’ve heard the words “Springsteen”, “Oldies”, “Alternative” and “Give it a Rest” mentioned.

Oh, and keep your eyes on the social media this weekend; there may be a second, “surprise” show announced Sunday morning if we can pull it together in time. Stay tuned…

Things are progressing nicely (horribly) as we have begun cobbling together The Wild Times, the new Wildwoodcentric Exit Zero publication I will be heading up and which runs Memorial Day to Labor Day (15 issues). With me on board as editor, all I need now is a photographer, a food writer, a music writer, a gossip columnist, another photographer, a photographer and a special events writer. I was remiss last month in not marking the 35th anniversary of the passing of my father, James Eugene “Gene” O’Brien. I was eight, he was 42.

Too soon for both of us. I work hard to try, though just as often fail, to make him proud, and his absence informs every aspect of who I am, who I was, and who I hope to be. So if you’d allow me to drop the bratty, sarcastic veneer for a moment, I’d just like to say, “I miss you dad.”

Looking From Lower

Local heroes, happenings and a few heckles... a monthly column by Lower Township Deputy Mayor Norris Clark

A

S CAPE May County ranked third in the nation in unemployment, a smart group of area businesspeople and cultural leaders gathered to brainstorm ways to help more of our folks get more and better jobs. It was the first meeting of the newly formed Lower Township Economic Development Committee, and Curtis Bashaw presented. We won’t go into details yet, except to say, Curtis made a great presentation. The gist of it was this: whether we are from Lower Township, or from the Cape Mays, we are all in the same boat, docked around the same economic harbor. You’ll hear more on this later.

Local Heroes: You’ll notice that many of our heroes are about education, probably because I believe that teachers are among humanity’s noblest creatures. Our heroes this month include Lower Township Elementary School Superintendent, George Drozdowski who is carrying forward the Lower Township Elementary Educational Foundation started by former superintendent Joe Cirrinicione. Not only does this

program support weekend food programs for families, it’s now supporting an early childhood visitation program for Lower Township families with three-year-old children called “3VP.” Without the state or federal funding that normally underwrites these programs in larger cities, LTES hired and trained teachers to visit homes and help parents become better teachers. Knowing that the life line of education must reach our children at an early age, and knowing that parents must be the first teachers, the schools embarked on a trial “parents as teachers” program to make a real difference.

Over 100 families benefited in our trial year.

The Friends of Fishing Creek School have

taken up this cause, led by John Louderback and Claudia Von Savage, and they are raising support for this good program. Learn more at fishingcreekschool.org Happenings: On June 2, Lower Township hosts the Inaugural Escape the Cape Triathlon? One thousand people will board the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, sail out into the Delaware Bay and then… Jump! Yes, they’re leaping off the boat and swimming to Lower Township! Also, Mitchell Plenn, who was recently named Township Of Lower’s Superintendent of Parks and Recreation, wants us to know that our pool passes go on sale May 4. The next coolest thing is our new single stream-recycling program.

A Few Heckles: All our fuss over getting Sunset Beach properly listed as “Lower Township” in TripAdvisor’s Top 25 Beaches apparently hit a few nerves. “Get over your chip,” was the way one person put it. Good point, and we will, by remembering that whether we are in Lower Township or the Cape Mays, we are all in the same boat.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

AM concerned about the summer.

As an inhabitant of a beach town, I need remind no-one of the importance of summer, but am going to remind you all anyway, as I do rather like the sound of my own voice. Which, to those of you who are not familiar with it, sounds rather like a cross between the actors James Mason and Morgan Freeman, except a little more insistent, I am told.

Now you know, you are free to close your eyes and imagine I am whispering in your ear. What am I whispering? ‘Well, you HAVE been a naughty girl/boy, haven’t you? And you KNOW what I do to …’

Oh, I see my faithful Manservant Kitchener rushing to pull the plug on this electronic typesetting machine, as he has been ordered to if the tone gets out of hand, by the truculent Scotch publisher of this rag, who fears a repeat of my infamous column titled: “Ten Positions They Missed From The Karma S….” oh damn you, Kitchener, you are stif ling my muse! I will not toler…

Right, finally I have managed to wres-

tle the power cable from Kitchener’s cold dead (oh very well, cold unconscious) hand and typing has resumed. Now where was I? Ah yes, well I shall not attempt to offend your delicate eyes, dear reader, I assure you: suffice of to say that my new adult memoir, Fifty Shades of Fogey is available in this very rag’s excellent store.

But back to Summer. All the signs are that we are facing a season of unprecedented horror. I have seen the bees are f lying manically in my hives, forming threedimensional images of the head of Boris

Yeltsin. I have witnessed the tea leafs swirling into the letters “RUN AWAY NOW” in the bottom of my cup at my weekly reading with Dickie Deandra, “Psychic to the Stars”.

I have observed crows f lying backwards in the sky at dusk. And I have looked through my “unofficial” feed from the CIA’s orbiting satellite network at the weather patterns, and I know that the smart ones among us will be stocking up on sun block and rainwear and building frog barrels. You heard correctly: we face scorching temperatures of up to 300 degrees, up to 20 inches of rain an hour and rains of frogs. Or possible rains of f lans: the signs are sometimes ambiguous. In case it’s the latter, make sure you have spare space in your freezer.

Obviously this will have an impact on our tourist season: visitors will risk broiling, trench foot or contusions from falling amphibians. Of course, this being Cape May, I expect fellow citizens to come up with various chillingly opportunistic ways of making money from the aff licted.

Here’s To Your Health

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

M

Y EARLIEST memories of gym class are from ninth grade — I had left catholic school after eighth grade, which had a sports program, but no gym classes. Our exercise for the day took place in the school parking lot, and lasted for about 30 minutes.

So I was excited at the prospect of a real gym class, with all the games, fitness tests and structured teams that come with it. That first year turned out to be a test of another sort.

The reality turned out to be a barking, formerMarine gym teacher, smelly classmates who wore the same shirt and shorts without the benefit of a shower or a washing machine for weeks on end, bullies (I weighed 87 pounds in ninth grade), and a host of other indignities which I won’t elaborate on.

I’m not the only one who has experienced “gym class” in this way, and I try to remember this every time a new member joins or someone simply comes in for a tour. I ask myself: What must this place look like and feel like to him or her, and what earlier experiences are, perhaps, driving up anxieties?

For those of you who have avoided going to a gym because of these or similar reasons, I bring you hope. It’s not like high school (at least our gym isn’t). Taking reticent, gymphobic people, and helping them see they can do anything they set their hearts to is incredibly satisfying. Here are 10 things I want you to consider, before you head to the gym: 1. Weights are not known for their intelligence, that’s why we call them dumbbells. You are way smarter, therefore you are in control.

2. Trainers are there to help you. They get extreme joy when you get results.

3. A gym doesn’t have to be dirty; in fact, it should look good and smell good.

4. The gym is a community. If you are quiet, people will respect that. If you want to make friends, you’ll have a bunch of them, which leads to number five…

5. Gym people are a pretty helpful group.

Most of them felt awkward once themselves, and love to lend a helping hand.

6. A good orientation class will set your mind at ease (ours meets every Saturday at 10:30am, and we have a great time).

7. There’s no such thing as natural talent.

There’s only hard work, and soon, that looks like natural talent.

8. Group classes are a great way to get in shape. The instructor leads, you follow. PS… People don’t care if you aren’t very good; they probably aren’t either.

9. You— yes, you!!— can absolutely, without a shred of doubt, unequivocally, do it! I don’t care what imagined limitations you have, someone else has triple those, and is still excelling.

10. Move it or lose it! We are going to leave this “mortal coil” someday. It’s “better to burn out than it is to rust.” (Neil Young) See you at the gym!!

Robert Shackleton Playhouse Cape May Stage 405 Lafayette St, Cape May Oysters were one of the first major fisheries to be exploited in the new world and were used to attract European settlers. At one point, Delaware Bay was a leading global producer of oysters. Overharvesting, habitat loss and disease, however, have resulted in dramatic declines. Through effective management, the Delaware Bay fishery has nevertheless achieved sustainability at today’s abundances. New state regulations and new developments are enabling growth of the industry via aquaculture - farming in the water. A bright future is on the horizon.

Dr. David Bushek became Director of the Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory at Rutgers University in 2011, where he is also an Associate Professor of Marine and Coastal Sciences. He is an expert in shellfish ecology, parasitology and aquaculture.

The Movie Column

This week, Arts Editor Tom Sims presents his tribute to Roger Ebert

WO weeks ago, we looked at all the end of the world, undead, zombie flicks coming up this season. But there are others in the works as well that might be worth getting excited about— especially if you are not a fan of utter catastrophe.

Classic, anyone? The Great Gatsby is a-coming. The legendary novel has never quite been able to translate on the big screen though a few high-end attempts have been made. There was the version in 2000 that was very nearly unnoticed by anybody. Did that go straight to DVD? The same is true for a 1949 version starring Alan Ladd. A version of the film in 1974 showed promise with Robert Redford in the lead role and Mia Farrow playing Daisy Buchanan, but critiscs were not impressed.

Well, this one is playing in IMAX as well, and perhaps Director Baz Luhrman, who had success with Strictly Ballroom (1992), Romeo + Juliet (1996), and Moulin Rouge (2001), will have better luck. He works with Leonardo DiCaprio once again (who

If you’re a baseball fan, you’ll want to see the film about the tumultuous career beginnings of Jackie Robinson, 42. Chadwick Boseman is in the lead role; he has up to now worked mostly in TV so it’s a debut of sorts for him as well. He is joined by Harrison Ford and Law and Order’s Christopher Meloni. This film also has a small role for Max Gail— an actor many of you may know as Seargent Stan Wojciehowicz (or

“Wojo”) on the TV show Barney Miller. I had an affinity toward the program, so it’s good see Gail is still out there working.

Woody Allen has substantial input and influence on a new film called Paris Manhattan. First-timer Sophie Lellouche is directing. I’m conflicted about Allen. Sometimes he’s good, sometimes he’s terrible. His film before that, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, well, maybe not so hot. According to the man, this movie is a “romantic comedy about a young woman whose choices in life and love are shaped by the philosophies of her favourite filmmaker.” Let’s see if this works or not! Chances: 50/50.

URING the Victorian era, women rarely traveled with friends. Single women might travel for causes like missionary work, and marriageable young women might make a Grand Tour of Europe with a suitable aunt or “lady’s companion,” but a proper married woman stayed home.

More women began to travel in the last decades of the 19th century, just after the passage of the Married Women’s Property Act of 1870, which allowed a woman to control her income and property. That may be coincidence, but it’s certainly easier to travel when you hold your own purse strings. Travelogues published by women like Lillias Campbell Davidson became popular. She published “Hints for Lady Travelers” in 1889, advising women to wear gowns “without loose ends or drapery” so they could ride bicycles, to carry a “small flask of brandy” and smelling salts at all times, and to pack a glove stretcher.

Today, it’s as common for women to travel with friends as it is for men. Science recognizes that friendship is good for mental and

Must have many years’ experience and be able to safely fly 100 people a day and still have a smile on their face! Must be very comfortable with flying triples. Must have 50 - 100 ton Masters License (Near Coastal) pre-employment drug test, Twick Card, FCC Licensed, mechanically inclined to do routine maintenance on Volvo D-6’s, First Aid and CPR certification, Transportation to and from work. EAST COAST PARASAIL, LLC. located in Cape May at Utsch’s Marina , is a very busy recession-proof summer destination surrounded by many major metropolitan cities within a few hours’ drive! Short Season to make some quick $CASH$. From Mid-June through September 10th $CASH$ will be based on experience. We have parasailing, jet ski rentals, and new this year a 24 passenger Jet Boat. There is also a wake board/ tubing boat, numerous charter boats and a 149 passenger whale/dolphin vessel at our location.

We have many return employees every year. This is not your typical summer job. You will enjoy working in your bathing suit and spending many hours each day on the water. Schedules are made so that guides and cashiers can have second jobs. We are looking for self-motivated, reliable, and quick thinking individuals. The equipment we rent can be extremely dangerous if not operated properly. Guides and cashiers will be required to hold a NJ boaters safety card for employment and guides and parasail mates will go through a 3 hour training exercise, prior to being considered for any position in MAY (Free).
