Talk Of The Town

RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS

Rest In Peace, Ray WE WERE sorry to hear about the passing of 59-year-old West Cape May resident Ray Reyes on April 19. Ray was important to the Cape May community as an active member of the Center for Community Arts, the Macedonia Baptist Church, the VFW, and several other service organizations, and we know he’ll be dearly missed. Condolences to the Reyes family.

Get Out There

Kahuna Mama Coleen Carusi McCoy takes a break in front of her teaching boards with her sons, future shredders Leo and Axel.

Swell Girl MAYBE you’ve heard about the women who’ve been — no pun intended — making waves in the surfing world. Layne Beachley — also, no pun intended — has won seven world championships. It was Keala Kennelly who charged a 25-foot wave for the win in the world’s first big wave contest for women. And Steph Gilmore — who once signed an autograph for your star-struck reporter — was inducted into the Australian Hall of Fame this year. But there’s one woman you won’t find on ESPN who’s also paving the way for future generations of female surfers, and in our own backyard. We caught up with mother, world traveler and Cape May local Coleen Carusi McCoy about the female-only surf clinics she pioneered in the area for the first time last year, and why waves are a passion worth having. “I was hooked on beach living from the get-go,” Coleen said.

“I started out lifeguarding at local pools, and then progressed to guarding at Diamond Beach, and that’s how my interest got peaked in all things ocean.” After graduating from high school at 17, Coleen took a surf lesson with the newlyformed Atlantic Surfers Organization and, by the time she completed college, she was ready to move to Maui, where Time Bomb Surfboards sponsored her to ride. But it wasn’t until Coleen relocated to Sayulita, Mexico that her career took off. Every winter season she she was flown down to work as surf instructor (and tour guide, translator, and medic) for Las Olas Surf Safari — a camp by women, for women — before advancing to head instructor in just seven years. “Up until this point,” Coleen said, “all of my surf idols were men. But the girls I worked with at the camp were amazing waterwomen, hailing from Australia, Mexico, and other parts of South America. That’s when it really

clicked for me. These women were tough, and making a living out of their passion for the ocean.” Beginning in 1988, during summers spent on American soil, Coleen began working at Ocean Outfitters in Wildwood Crest. That same year, under the direction of longtime Merion Inn server Dean Lyon, the shop began offering all-age surf camps for both guys and girls, a program that was wonderfully received. “But for some reason,” Colleen said, “for some of the women who have always wanted to try the sport, the intimidation factor is still there. Not so much for the younger, 12-year-old set, who seem to jump right in, but for girls 18 and over. Women are more cautious by nature, which is a gift, but also at times a fault. A woman is more likely to look before she leaps.” So, in an attempt to help the girls of Cape May County go

DO NOT forget that Cape Island Runners, the island’s only running group, is starting back up for the season on May 1. They meet every Wednesday night at 6pm at the entrance to the Cape May Point State Park, and they welcome runners of all abilities.

For The Love Of Animals ON May 4, Elaine’s Dinner Theater will host a Kentucky Derby Event on their lawn and inside their bar as a fundraiser for Animal Outreach of Cape May County. You can look forward to live music and authentic mint juleps on the porch and, of course, the Kentucky Derby on several HDTVs. Be sure to wear your most fun Derby hat and colorful attire... you will be judged! Tickets are $20 and include southern foods.

Whoops! THERE was no clip art in last week’s issue, which means that all of you who play our weekly clip-art contest may have gone crazy searching. Our apologizes for the mishap — it happens about once a year. There IS one hidden in this issue, so email jason@exitzero.us when you find it. And go ahead and send him an email about last week, too, with the word NONE in the the subject line, and you can still win!

Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Charles Henderson of Newtown Square, PA. How long have you been coming to Cape May? Let’s see... It’s probably been about 15 years. What do you like about it? I like that it has the beach, NO boardwalk, and good restaurants. And it’s really nice, quiet and pleasant. What’s your favorite place? I guess that would be the Merion Inn. Least favorite thing about Cape May? That’s a tricky one... I don’t think I have a least favorite thing! What is your favorite restaurant? I think that would also be the Merion Inn. You can probably tell that I really like the Merion Inn. And I also like other places like the Lobster House and Tisha’s. And your favorite store? Out of all of them... my favorite is Love the Cook. What do you like about Exit Zero? Plenty of things! But especially, I appreciate how it’s always so informative. Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 ahead and leap, Coleen spearheaded her women-only surf camp through Ocean Outfitters last year. She was met with ringing endorsements by icons like Kristy Murphy, a former Las Olas colleague and Longboarding Champion of the World, who posted online that Coleen in the only instructor she’d take a lesson from in New Jersey. Which is, perhaps, not only because Coleen has the experience (she’s even assisted Endless Summer star Robert “Wingnut” Weaver in his surf school), but because Colleen gets it… she understands the challenges facing females in the sport. “A lot of people have this concept in their mind of surfer girls as Roxy models,” she said. “For a while, I was trying to live up to that. But then I became friends strong women who charge some of the world’s heaviest waves, and let me tell you… none of them come close to a Roxy model image. I’ll do what

I can to dispel that misconception, that surfing is only for tan 16-year-olds who are a size two.” Rather, Coleen says, surfing is for any woman who wants to connect with the natural world (“To feel that sense of vast open water is worth the experience right there,” she told us), and, also, anyone who wants to feel just a little bit more alive. “I’ll never forget the day I was teaching in Mexico, where there are many dangers to contend with in the water — reef beds, poison fish, and large rocks that are difficult to see,” Coleen said. “I was explaining to a woman from Illinois that she needed to do the turtle roll maneuver, or she was going to get swept back over the rock reef by huge waves. She didn’t understand the importance of this, and she hurt her leg. While we were getting her to the clinic, so that she could get stitches, all she could say is, ‘When can I get back in the water?’” But that’s one of the greatest things about surfing... it teaches you to get back up again. “You

learn to keep going when you take a beating,” Coleen said, “to not panic when you get in a jam. I was in labor with my first son, telling myself to just keep paddling. As cliché as it sounds, surfing is the ultimate life lesson.” The all-women clinics, which will incorporate nutrition education, will take place on Sundays this summer, for two hours at a time, and will be geared toward women 18 and older. “I don’t want more mature women to think they’ll be getting in the water with young kids,” Coleen said. The clinic will also accommodate events, such as bachelorette parties or corporate retreats. Look for the first one on Mother’s Day, especially if you’re still in need of a cool gift for the water-loving matriarch of the family. And don’t worry… there won’t be any rock reefs or poison fish to contend with during your lesson, which will be taught in the forgiving break of Wildwood’s Rambler Road beach. (Coleen,

What you can expect is an encouraging environment. “I’ve never seen a lesson of girls go badly,” Coleen said. “There’s zero competition. Art Man MARTY Santry, the Washington Inn’s affable, 60-year-old bartender, doesn’t spend a lot of time talking about himself, so despite the great deal of people he meets

on a given night, not many Cape Islanders know much about him. “That’s okay with me,” he told us. “I’m there to do a job. When I’m at work, it’s more about the customers.” More about the customers, and less about Marty’s affinity for horseshoe crabs, or his adorable two-month-old grandson named Elliot, or the joy he finds in sitting in the backyard with good friends and a bottle of wine after a long day on the beach. And, definitely, more about the customers than the artwork Marty spends so much of his time creating. But on May 3, Marty won’t be able to avoid the spotlight, because the bartender will be one of two artists featured at Sunset Hill Fine Arts Gallery in West Chester, Pennsylvania, as part of the show called “Land and Sea”. “I’ve always loved painting,” Marty said. “It’s a form of expression and meditation.” But, here again, Marty is too humble to tell the whole story; in his case, painting isn’t just a pleasurable hobby… it’s a serious talent. We

know this because, in his West Cape May home, we got a sneak peak of Marty’s work, which we discussed over biscotti, tea, and pictures of Elliot. “The first artist I really saw was Van Gogh at the Philadelphia Museum of Art,” Marty said, as his cat — a female called Freddie — rubbed against his chair. “My mother’s friend took me, and I was totally overwhelmed. Even though I didn’t really understand the art, it blew me away. I still remember the way the Van Gogh banners looked as I made my way up the steps.” And that’s saying something, because Marty has had a great deal of life experiences worth remembering… like herding goats in the Mediterranean, for instance. “I have lived a lot of places,” he said. “California, England, St. Croix… but I have to say my most memorable travel experience happened in Crete. I was 22, and I was hiking a huge gorge with my brother. On the way back, we discovered this won-

derful, rugged little port where we ended up staying with a family for a month. There was no electricity and no running water, but we were surrounded by antiquity — a 2nd-century Christian church and a medieval Turkish castle. We helped the family out, herding their animals, and tourists took our picture, thinking we were native to the area. It was such a wonderful time.” For his artwork, Marty draws inspiration from these travels, but also from the natural world around him, like when he works plein aire by the dunes by the lighthouse, or when he recreates a plant in his own backyard. “I started painting that last spring,” he said, pointing to a pear tree on the lawn. “And I’ve been waiting all winter for it to finish blooming so I can complete it. I just have 10 more hours of work to go.” Some of Marty’s other pieces depict New York models. Others, like the one of horseshoe crabs

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 that incorporates neon light and hangs in Lucky Bones restaurant, depict sea life. Still others depict nothing at all, like the “string paintings” which are not representational but, rather, convey only movement and color. The pieces even range in size, from two to seven feet long. So what’s the common thread? “I just think they’re happy, joyous paintings,” Marty said. “And I hope people feel good when they see them.” If history is any indication, there’s a fair chance this will be the case. For the last 10 years, Marty — who has organized shows for the African American Museum in Philadelphia, and whose been asked to put on shows by such big name firms as Philadelphia’s Tigue Lighting — has done only commission work. One family flew him to California so that he could paint a portrait of their daughter, as well as the landscapes there. “They became

interested after buying a painting I did of the black-eyed Susan plant,” he said. “The woman’s name was Susan, thank God.” As for how this latest show came about? Sunset Hill owner Sandra Riper, who spends much time in Cape May, has been a longtime customer of Marty’s; one day, his art finally came up — reluctantly, no doubt — in conversation. “That was about a year ago,” Marty said. “Sandra asked to see my work, and I’ve been preparing for this show ever since. I don’t feel nervous; I feel ready, and so happy to be able to do this.” “Land and Sea” will run from May 3 to May 24, with an opening reception on May 3 from 5-9pm. For directions or more info on Marty or Peter Quarracino, the other featured artist, visit sunsethillgallery.com.

IT LOOKS like Cape May might finally have some hope of altering the funding formula that determines how much it costs to send

students to the Lower Cape May Regional High School District. Last year, city taxpayers paid $72,000 for each student sent to the regional school district. As a cost comparison, for the same money you could send your kid to Rutgers University or Richard Stockton College, living on campus for $24,000 per year, add on a new car for your student each year, like a 2013 Acura ILX with premium package for $29,200, and top it off with a brand new Bayliner 180 Bowrider 18-foot boat each year for $18,000. At the same time, Lower Township taxpayers were paying the equivalent of $7,753 per pupil. At the April 16 city council meeting, council member Jack Wichterman said he had some good news in the form of a decision from Administrative Law Judge Leslie Celantano in Bergen County in a school funding formula case between the towns of Oradell and River Edge. The case was handled by Vito Gagliardi, an attorney special-

izing in changing school funding formulas who was hired by Cape May last December with $48,000 budgeted over the next two years for his services. “Although their problem is not as severe as ours, the judge agreed entirely with what they asked for,” said Wichterman, adding that they were not paying anywhere near as much as Cape May. “To me, it shows what’s going on now in New Jersey, the courts are waking up,” said Wichterman, who is very optimistic about Cape May’s prospects for change in the funding formula following the court decision. Gagliardi is expected to visit council in May. He has been preparing a feasibility study on how to change the regional school funding formula. City Solicitor Tony Monzo said Oradell petitioned the state Commissioner of Education for reapportionment on the heels of a case in North Haledon

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 18 which gave courts the authority to review and come up with a more equitable funding formula. He said Judge Celantano provided a recommendation to the commissioner of education that neither a per pupil or a per property assessment formula was equitable for Oradell. “The more equitable solution in this case was 80 percent pupils and 20 percent property values,” said Monzo. Celanto recommended the new formula be phased in over two years. The commissioner of education can accept, reject or modify the decision of the administrative law judge. The commissioner’s decision can be appealed in the Appellate Division of Superior Court for further review. Monzo said the disparity in the school funding formula of Oradell and River Edge was not nearly as bad as that of Cape May and Lower Township. He said

there was a difference of cost per pupil of $19,000 for Oradell versus $13,200 per pupil for River Edge. “This is the third case where towns that are really getting hit hard are getting relief,” said Wichterman. “Number one was North Haledon, then Seaside Park and now Oradell and I’m hoping we’re going to be number four.” The City of North Haledon has saved over $4 million. Gagliardi was hired as consultant to Cape May in 2005. At that time he recommended a voter referendum on the regional school funding formula but it did not come to fruition when the West Cape May Board of Commissioners and West Cape May Board of Education voted no. Deputy Mayor Bill Murray said the funding formula would never be changed “politically” because of the size of districts and the difficulty for legislators to try to convince a municipality to allow their taxes to be increased because the school funding formula is unfair.

New SOMA Gallery Show Features South Jersey Trio If you love beautiful images of Cape May, you won’t want to miss it

B

EEN suffering from art withdrawal through the winter? SOMA NewArt Gallery’s first exhibition of the year features three solo exhibitions by South Jersey artists: Carol King Hood, Marie Natale and Leslie Martel. Two of the shows feature beautiful images of Cape May attractions and architecture. In Gallery One, “Indoor Spaces/Outside Places” features new watercolors by nationally acclaimed award-winning artist Marie Natale. Her new work is designed to highlight the myriad ways in which light creates the essence of a great painting. Using a variety of watercolor techniques, Natale explores the illumination of ambiance that light creates in locations indoors and out. Her knowledge of art theory and design, along with her rich palette of color, give vibrant life to her iconic paintings of Victorian houses, indoor and outdoor cafés and meeting places, rustic boat shacks and seaside landscapes. All her paintings share her masterful style

of light, charm, beauty, and peacefulness. Natale states as her goal “to use my talents to make the world a brighter place, and to share with others the happiness that art has brought into my life.” Natale will also be painting Exit Zero’s color issue covers this year, so look out for those. In Gallery Two, SOMA presents “The Plentiful Palette” by Leslie Martel, a dedicated student of Marie Natale. Her work embraces the elements of collage, watercolor and acrylic, using intense color, overlaying collage and paint, producing abstractions of the obvious things around us. In Gallery Three, Cape May Point artist, Carol King Hood is exhibiting “Kumbayah”, which willl feature 33 oil paintings inspired by the simple lives and history of the nuns of St. Joseph’s and their summers at Saint Mary’s by the Sea retreat house in Cape May Point. Hood, an admirer of plein air painting, uses this technique and her own signature style of brilliant colors and strong paint-

erly brush stokes to capture the everyday life of the residing nuns who roam the retreat’s premises and nearby surroundings. Her exhibit will also explore the history of the Sisters before and after Vatican II; the shedding of the Habit for more contemporary clothing. The title, “Kumbayah” symbolizes social change through peaceful means, which is the work/mission of the Sister’s today. The exhibit will be on view at SOMA Gallery from May 11 to June 9. An Opening Artist Reception will be held on May 11 from 6pm to 9pm. All art lovers are invited to attend the opening reception, meet the artists, and enjoy an evening of art, music, conversation, light food and drink. SOMA NewArt Gallery is located at 31 Perry Street in Carpenters Square Mall, Cape May. Spring hours are 10am to 6pm, Thursday to Monday. Beginning May 24, the gallery is open daily 10am to 9pm. For more information visit SOMA online at somagallery.net, on Facebook, or call 609898-7488.

Terry O’Brien’s weekly column... it’s about nothing and everything, all at the same time

OO late for publication did the Love Me Dudes take the stage at The Bayshore Inn to include in this edition. Thus, you will have to wait to read the exploits of Will “The Thrill” Knapp (Ding!) on keys! Al “We’re playing 4/20? Sweet… Got a light?” Olivero on the skins! Terry “Slim Cut” Dougherty slappin’ da bass! Mike “Mike” O’Brien shredding his Gretsch! And… me. It’s been quite a journey with the Love Me Dudes as we went from idea-to-kick@$$ Beatles band (and one-time Billy Joel band, also awesome, but happened in Wildwood, which may as well be Mars as far as you snooty Cape May-types are concerned. That was mean, I take it back. Still, you’re missing a whole lot of cool stuff on the other side of the bridge). We have had more gigs (four) than rehearsals (three). I woudn’t recommend this for your average band, but we are NOT your average band. We are mildly above-average. Now, a promise — after next week I won’t make any mention of the Beatles until January. Also winding down are my Thursday

Open Mic shows with Bill Caterini at Rio Station as the end of April looms (already?), though there’s talk of extending it through May. We’ll see. It hasn’t yet reached the Epic Proportions of Barry Tischler’s nowlegendary Pilot House shows, but we are building a nice little musical community over there. Sean Eisele, Mikey Alimo (aka Mykey Vengeance), Sean Haggerty, Brandon Smith, Chris South and Joe Oswald are just a few… okay, ALL of the performers we’ve had take our stage (violently, sometimes). There’s 25-cent wings, cold beer, live music… I mean, what else do you need? As I mentioned last week, Geoff Moran has joined our little band. As I did not men-

tion, at 6’7”, he destroys the height curve. If he falls down he’s halfway home. The aforementioned Brandon Smith has been bawling all over the Facebook this week about “Oh, it’s so nice that people are buying my album I want to cry” and “Oh, I wish I could hug all of you who are supporting my music” and “Oh, I’d like to teach the world to sing” and my god have some dignity, man! (From a guy who weeps at least once at every Beatles show.) Brandon is the ringmaster (zookeeper?) behind Urethra Franklin, a local band that just released their debut CD, Welcome to Rio Grande, on Amazon, iTunes, Best Buy, as well as outlets around town. It’s good, solid, rock-poppy stuff so pick up a copy and catch a set or two on Thursday night at the Rio. Someday it will be looked back upon like seeing The Beatles at The Cavern. Will and I played a cool gig over at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry last Saturday for a private party. It was very much a listening crowd (a 90th birthday party, not a whole lot of go-go girls in bikinis), but we saw plenty

of tapping toes and nodding heads, which is good enough for us. As long as people don’t throw stuff we’re pretty happy. Thanks to Dianne Salfi for bringing us in, and her dad for turning 90! I’ve been singing a LOT this off-season with various players and bands, and about one out of five gigs I’m in good voice. After watching Phillies ace Roy Halladay struggle through his first few starts, I have come to the realization that I, too, have lost my fastball. It’s mildly sad to think that I’ll never sing as well as I once did, but as long as all my other pitches are working, I can still throw a good game and fool most of the hitters. Can anyone tell me where to go to get the sticker that says because I’m a Dance Parent that traffic and parking laws, as well as simple driver courtesy, no longer apply to me? First, allow me to offer a full-throated “congratulations” to Mike and Destiny Wilson on the opening of their new health club and dance studio at Cape May Fitness Center (CMFC) on Bayshore Road (across from McDonald’s… okay, bad landmark). It really is stunning with loads of new equipment and a relaxing atmosphere (sorry, North Beach Health Club; I can’t not report it). But what isn’t new is the nightmare of navigating a narrow parking lot with cars lined two-deep in front of the building, despite loads of EMPTY SPACES 20-FEET AWAY. It’s not quite “Douchebag of the Week”-level discourtesy, but what’s so terrible about parking in a PARKING SPOT and waiting? My goodness... it’s like Frogger. Speaking of North Beach Health Club, I want to thank Mark Chamberlain for bringing me in this winter and teaching me some whole new ways to sweat. Sadly, my schedule is now such that I probably can’t get back in until the fall (if at all, after mentioning CMFC…), but I’m really, really looking forward to putting in the time later

and no longer being a fat ass. I’ve been putting a lot of time in recently at Exit Zero Global HQ in West Cape May as I work on The Wild Times magazine, and there are many comforting signs of the imminent arrival of summer; the smell of grilling food on the Washington Street Mall, the clip-clop of horse- drawn carriages, the pile of broken tail lights at the corner of Perry and Park… While there last Tuesday I had a fine conversation with Colonel Rich Nowakowski. He’s heading down to Cape Fear with his wife Anne Kelly to stalk Nick Nolte and/or Gregory Peck. And to take in the sights at Fort Fisher, which played a pivotal role in the movie Lincoln and, I presume, the Civil War. Later that evening I had a late-night “writing session” with Jack Wright and Diane Stopyra which involved bottles of wine, and little writing. As Hemingway once said, “Write drunk, edit sober.” I’m already pretty good at the first part. EZ HQ is becoming a Fortress of Solitude thanks to Oscar Nunez and Mike DeMusz. At this rate it will slowly devour the rest of West Cape May in about six weeks... if Jack doesn’t devour it first. (Jack’s fat now, I can make fat jokes.) Lastly this week, I ask two things. First, please send a good thought to Leslie DeRose, a wonderful open mic performer who appeared at both our Beatles shows this year but will be unable to attend the third as she will be laying her brother, Joe, to rest. Far too soon. Leslie is a kind soul, a calming presence, and could use all you can give her right now. Condolences to the DeRose family. Second, if you can spare it, send a little love up to Reading, Pennsylvania as my mom, Marlene, battles through some difficulties. She’s a tough old broad, and for all the love she’s given, I ask you all send a little back. Next week, I promise, no sad endings. Unless I die or get sick. Then I want wailing. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

DILIGENTLY REPORTING THE GOINGS-ON AT CAPE MAY CITY COUNCIL... BY JACK FICHTER ruption in the form of demolition, construction and patching of the promenade. Those who wish to view the sinkhole will be disappointed — thick metal sheathing covers the spot. The hole extends through the asphalt of the promenade. The work could require a DEP permit, said MacLeod. In 2010, three outfall pipes at Queen Street were replaced.

Water Tower Update

The water tower at Madison Avenue will soon be ready for its closeup

Promenade Has Sinkhole CITY Hall Auditorium April 16 was as empty as a showing of Kevin Costner’s soggy and phenomenally expensive 1995 movie Waterworld. Even volunteer videographer George Costich, the suspender wearing audio-visual roadie, was missing. He had chosen to tape a variety show at Victorian Towers. Mayor Edward J. Mahaney Jr. welcomed three reporters on hand by name, the only folks in attendance who were not city officials or employees. Two members of the public strolled in just in time for the public comment portion of the meeting. A lot of the talk at the city council meeting concerned water in one way or another, water bubbling up, going down the drain or spinning down toilets near the promenade. Council’s dress for the evening was mixed across seasons, levels of formality and casualness. Council member Jack Wichterman wore a natty argyle sweater, sans tie and an open collar shirt. Council member Deanna Fiocca was dressed more for winter with a turquoise

scarf. Mayor Mahaney Jr. wore a suit but saluted spring with robin’s egg blue shirt. City Solicitor Tony Monzo, always the sharp dresser, wore a tailored suit with a deep purple tie. Council member Bill Murray wore a dress shirt. City Manager Bruce MacLeod spoke a word that instills panic in Floridians — “sinkhole.” Cape May has a small sinkhole on the promenade, not the type that swallowed a Seffner Florida man as he slept in his bed in February. MacLeod said the sinkhole, about three feet wide, was located on the promenade near Beach Avenue and Ocean Street. He said the city was investigating the cause, suspected to be connected to the Ocean Street outfall pipe. “The assumption is there is probably a leak that’s developed in that pipe that’s undermining the surface and the material around it,” said MacLeod. City Engineer Ray Roberts is preparing to send a video camera through the outfall pipe to see if there are other issues present. MacLeod said a contractor would be hired to make repairs which would cause some dis-

CONDITIONS are likely to get noisy as the final phase of sandblasting and painting begins on the Madison Avenue water tower. Rod and strut replacement, those pieces that support the big bowl of water on top, is complete. The last remaining antenna is scheduled to be removed from the top of the water tower during the sandblasting process, he said. The antenna picks up signals from the automated water meter in front of your home or business. A containment structure to hold a tent around the tower goes up the week of April 26, said City Manager Bruce MacLeod. The tent will remain up until the project is finished, he said. Sandblasting is scheduled from April 29 to May 3. After that, the water tank gets an intermediate finish coat of paint and the big bowl gets refilled with water from May 15-20. MacLeod said the water tower is targeted to be back in use by Memorial Day weekend.

Toilets To Get A Facelift THE portable yellow restrooms on Beach Avenue at the foot of Gurney Street along the promenade may be the city’s least favorite asset. City council introduced a $475,000 bond ordinance providing funding for improvements to the beach utility as it undertakes its annual spending routine of purchasing needed items, repairing buildings and improving the water and sewer systems. City Manager Bruce MacLeod told Exit Zero the beach utility bond ordinance had an appropriation of $250,000 for building restrooms in city-owned property next to Convention Hall. It is fairly unlikely the rest-

From Page 43 rooms will be finished in time for this summer season. “Chances are that there won’t be any physical construction or bathroom in place for this summer season unless we get to it through the course of the summer,” said MacLeod. He told us the city would probably need the services of an architect to design the new restrooms on the promenade. Conceptual plans use the former Oasis restaurant and part of the beach tag office. The city would need to go through the permitting process with its construction office, said MacLeod. Businessman Bernie Haas, owner of Cape Publishing, commented that the Convention Hall area of town was “pretty shabby” with eight of 15 stores surrounding the former Beach Theatre vacant and the “yellow” restrooms along the promenade at Gurney Street.

Outflow Windfall WHAT goes down the tubes here takes a lot of tax money with it. Each year the city pays the county Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) a bundle to take the sewage out of town, to a treatment plant and then out to sea. While no one wants to see what goes down the drain come back up, Cape May is getting something back, a rebate from the MUA. Billings to the city from the MUA begin as an estimate. At the end of the year, MUA checks the numbers of estimated sewage flows versus what really came down the pipes. The city shares user fees from the MUA with all the other municipalities in the county. City Manager Bruce MacLeod said that based on actual sewage flows, the city will receive a credit just above $143,000. “Wow,” replied council member Deanna Fiocca.

And Finally... A Non-Water Story

THERE it sits behind the former Beach Theatre, an empty lot covered lightly in sand that would make a nice parking lot. The question is would the owners of the property, Frank Investments, have any interest in operating the open space as a parking facility this summer. City Manager Bruce MacLeod said no formal application has been made from Frank Investments. City Solicitor Tony Monzo said approvals would be required from the city’s Planning Board to operate it as a parking lot.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

F YOU have just arrived in our fair city, and are thinking that the trip here took a little longer than usual, that’s because it did. And if you are a Cape Mayer and have recently been feeling that you are a little more distant from the mainland, that’s because you are. Recent surveys by the American Seismological Trust have shown that the Cape May Canal is widening, with increasing speed. Whether this is a result of the original digging of the canal unmooring Cape May, causing us to drift slowly with the currents, or because of a little-known twist in the “Caribbean Tectonic Plate” is a matter of fierce debate. But either way, we are fairly sprinting away from the mainland, and within a matter of decades we will be in what is legally known as “international waters”. What will this mean? Well, for a start, the existing three bridges will long since have fallen into the ocean, so we will be needing a ferry service. And, soon after that, when we are actually out of sight of

land, we will be needing a new airport. Anywho, in the meantime we need to make some plans: we will need our own power generator, as our electrical cables will stretch and then snap. However, we do have the mothballed experimental nuclear fission reactor at the base of the concrete lookout tower near the lighthouse, which could be brought online. And of course the speed of our movement through the ocean will provide some megawatts of hydroelectric power once we have a simple paddlewheel installed on our “bow”.

Contemporary & Estate Jewelry We Buy Diamonds, Gold and Silver!

We will be needing our own f lag, and emblem, not to mention currency. And our own defense force, as our course will take us through pirate-infested waters in the Caribbean, according to my own maps which served me well when I was a corsair myself (until I took a cannonball to the head fighting Blackbeard — I of course won, and his head was removed neatly from his shoulders, but I was robbed of my memory for a decade and when I awoke I had a mastery of Mandarin that I am fairly sure was not evident beforehand). Also, we will be technically a sovereign nation, and can elect our own president, possibly some elder statesman of the city, someone who has seen us through times thick and thin with wisdom and ruthlessness, quite likely a widower who has incredible financial reserves and the wit of a rapier. I am not sure where we might find such a chap, but I am sure we will not be found wanting. Also, we might just, to be sure to entice such a man, award him the title of “Emperor”, just temporarily, of course.

Here’s To Your Health

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

A

CCORDING to historian A. Roger Ekrich, there used to be two cycles to our sleep each night which were separated by about an hour of wakefulness. One could use this time to pray, write poetry (my favorite late-night high jinx), or to have sex (or to pray for the latter, as the case may have been). Then came electricity and, with it, the 40-hour work week, until people were too damn tired to wake up mid-sleep for an hour. Ekrich believes this played havoc with our circadian rhythms. Whatever the cause, hitting the hay, sawing wood, getting 40 winks... it’s all become increasingly difficult. You don’t need to be a sleep researcher to figure out that lack of sleep affects performance in every area of your life negatively. But researchers have quantified that reduced performance — they’ve equated a 24-hour period with a .05 blood alcohol level. Sure, not many stay awake that long, but a four or five-hour night of shut-eye is not uncommon. Two-thirds of the population between 13 and 64 report not getting enough rest. Half of that group complains of problems like insomnia.

Nathaniel Kleitman was the first scientist to see sleep as an issue at all, let alone one that needed studying. Up until that point, no one really gave it much thought; people were either awake, or they weren’t. Kleitman conducted sleep deprivation studies on himself and his students, finding that if you stay awake too long, you actually begin hallucinating. (Once, while driving in the wee hours on little sleep, I saw the Jersey Devil running in front of my car.) One of Kleitman’s graduate students, Eugene Aserinsky, decided to hook sleeping people up to an early version of the electroencephalogram machine. A number of times each night,

the subjects went through periods where their eyes would dart wildly back and forth in REM, or Rapid Eye Movement, sleep. It isn’t the deepest sleep, in fact, it’s a light sleep often followed by waking up that happens for about 90 to 120 minutes each night. (But different species have different patterns. Dolphins, for example, sleep with only half of their brain to prevent drowning.) It’s been suggested that the discovery of REM is what led to sleep becoming a bona fide scientific field. Today, major universities have entire schools dedicated to the subject. Treating sleep disorders is a fast-growing, for-profit industry and, with health insurers now including it in their coverage, the growth is expected through the year 2017. Sleep clinics are now common and sleep rooms, like the ones at airports that allow renting by the hour, are increasingly popular. Personally, I’ve been known to sleep through movies at the Cineplex, mid-night thunderstorms and a house full of screaming kids, all while sitting straight up in a chair. Now, waking up... that’s a whole other kettle of fish.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady, Five years ago, I fixed up two friends: They fell in love, got married and were living happily ever after until, suddenly, they weren’t. They’ve separated and plan to divorce. It’s not nasty or ugly, they’ve simply grown apart. My husband and I socialize with them often (we’re at Harpoon Henry’s every Saturday in the summer without fail), and, since my husband travels often for work, I also socialize with them alone. Here’s the kicker: the wife told me we’d “have to pick a side.” In other words, she wants us (specifically me) to decide which one of them I’d like to keep as a friend, because evidently, I can’t “keep” them both! I’m flabbergasted, and even if I wanted to go along with this, I have no idea how I’d choose; I’ve known them both for 20 years. Help! — Split Decision Located Between Jackson & Perry Sts.

Dear Decision, Indeed, the Answer Lady wonders just what criteria this deranged woman expects you to use. Who has better table manners? Who tells a better joke? Who drives a nicer car? Eeney, meeney, miney, moe? Surely, she has taken temporary leave of her senses due to the circumstances, which is perfectly understandable. Make a date for coffee or lunch with her, and gently explain that while you’re sorry to see their marriage end, you love them both and hope it’s what’s best

for them in the long run. Then remind her (again, gently), that your friendship is not a part of the divorce settlement, to be decided upon along with who gets the leather couch. Answer Lady, My best friend always vents to me whenever she fights with her boyfriend. They don’t fight very often, but when they do, it usually ends up being dramatic and silly. The problem is, I tend to agree with his side of the argument, instead of hers. Do I tell her what I really think, or should I just nod and make sympathetic noises (which is what I’ve been doing so far)? — Taking Sides Dear Taking, A wise man once said “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” As much as the Answer Lady deplores the use of the word “ain’t,” she agrees with this sentiment. If your friend comes right out and asks “Do you think I’m being an idiot?” feel free to say “Of course you are, you twit.” But if she simply wants to vent, cluck away. Fragrance takes us on a journey like nothing else. Our handmade Shea Body But ters are like lit tle journeys, stowed away in a flip-top jar. I am inspired by my own experiences, my memories and my wanderlust, by places that I have visited and ingredients I have found along my way. Smiles, Canyon

The Movie Column

W

This week, Arts Editor Tom Sims presents his tribute to Roger Ebert

HERE else can you see great documentaries about locals like the bread maker on Sunset Boulevard? What studio would dare to produce Guido Vampires and A History of Flip Flops... in the same week, no less! There is only one organization bold enough to green light movie projects featuring accidental hoagies or Victorian gangstas! The Cape May Film Camp will generate innovative films such as these the week of June 24 to 28 at the West Cape May Borough Hall. This year, we’re adding something different to the syllabus: you! This year for the first time, adults are welcome to conceptualize ideas, write scripts, and shoot and edit videos as well. We are accepting applications from the 13 to 18 year olds who generally comprise our student body, but we’re also planning to host a grown-up or two who would like to learn more about the entire process. In case you have not seen some of the films that have come from the studios of

Stefan Prosky returns to host the 2013 Film Camp, June 24-28 the Cape May Film Camp, take a look at some of the best at our YouTube Channel (youtube.com/capemayfilm). The Pick Up Specialists (2012): What can young guys learn about dating from a pick up specialist? The question is: what can he learn from them? Solitude (2012): It would seem that being left at home for an extended time was too much for this one teenager. Shell Game (2011): Whether the shell

has magical powers or not, this young man gets help facing his brother’s past and his own fears. West Cape May Farmer’s Market (2010): A look inside this great seasonal event! Guido Vampires (2010): Really, in a best of list? Well it was fun to make! Nearly 35,000 views tell you that this channel of great videos produced by our region’s most talented youth are mustviewing for any local or any visitor who wants to get on the inside track of what is important to Cape May. Meantime, we’re teaching students not only about filmmaking but about how to be part of a team effort, how to overcome obstacles, and how to see a project through to completion! How can your young filmmaker (or, this year, you!) get involved? Visitcapemayfilm.org, or call/text 609-326-FEST. The cost for the film camp has not gone up since 2007 — thanks to the generous gifts from members of the Cape May Film Society. You can become a member by visiting the website as well.

Activity Of The Week

S

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Spring At Last

PRING is a time of healing and rebirth, and there are some years when we really need it. Let warm breezes and bright colors be a balm for your winter blues this year — welcome spring in Cape May. Stroll the beach and try to spot a seal napping on the sand, or stroll the streets and enjoy the newly-blooming daffodils and tulips. Wander aimlessly, or take part in Cape May Spring Festival, sponsored by the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (MAC) and the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May, April 26 through May 5. Kick off the celebration by kicking up your heels at the Chalfonte Hotel – the Vintage Dance Weekend package lets you learn the steps in three workshops, and show them off at a Civil War-themed ball on Saturday night, April 27, or a Ragtime Tea Dance on Sunday afternoon, April 28. If you wish, you can even dress up in period attire, because vintage costume is “highly admired” and encouraged, but not required. The full package of workshops, ball and tea dance is $95, and separate admission is also available.

Find a nice place for a stroll, and see what’s blooming in Cape May this spring! To add a little sweetness to the springtime, take part in the Chocolate Championship Tour and Tasting on May 4. At each inn on the tour, you’ll sample a signature dessert and choose your favorite. Send in a completed evaluation form to receive the recipes by mail. Adults are $20, children $15. Or, sink your teeth into a mystery luncheon or dinner. “Play” along as a tropical storm threatens the coast and a “Foul Weather Fiend”

circle of light

threatens the guests at the Seagull Inn. The mystery unfolds at the Carriage House Cafe or at Aleathea’s Restaurant at the Inn of Cape May. Adults can join for $45 for dinner, $30 for lunch. A children’s menu is available $15 per meal, and reservations are required. If spring cleaning has put you in the mood to redecorate, you can get inspired with a tour of private Cape May homes, with admission of $15 for adults, $10 for children. You can easily bring some of that Victorian charm home with you when you spend some time (and money) at the Spring Festival Crafts and Antiques Shows on April 27 and May 4, at the Emlen Physick Estate from 10am to 4pm. There are so many ways to enjoy Cape May in the springtime. Visit a vineyard for a tour and tasting. Mingle with a different sort of spirits on a ghost tour. Stretch your legs by climbing the lighthouse under a full moon. Romance your sweetie with a moonlight trolley tour. For tickets and more information, visit capemaymac.org. The possiblities are endless, so turn your face to the sun, and welcome spring in our city of Cape May. Next week: Water, Water, Everywhere

«

DANTE is a three-year-old pit bull mix. He graduated from the shelter’s obedience program with flying colors and now knows all kinds of cool tricks! He knows sit, down, paw, leave it and more. Dante is quiet, well-behaved, walks well on a leash, and gets along with other dogs and kids. If he sounds like what you are looking for in a pet, please come visit him at the shelter. The adoption fee for Dante is $95.

«

Z is a three-year-old Lab and German Shepherd mix. This is his third time staying at the shelter, because poor Z has had a run of tough luck. He is a fun-loving boy who can at times be on the boisterous side but that’s just because he loves to play. He is full of excitement and zest for life! If you think he could fit into your life, please come by and meet him today. He’ll love you more than he loves himself. His adoption fee is $95.

Robert Panaccio, VMD Robert Moffatt, VMD Nancy Reilly, VMD

«

MAVERICK is a big, fluffy Australian Shepherd mix. He’s getting along in years (eight years old!), so all he wants is a quiet, peaceful home where he can relax. He gets along well with other dogs, and even cats... but due to his age, he would be best in a home without young children. He also doesn’t really get along well with men. If Maverick sounds like a good match for you, his adoption fee is only $8!

OZ is a sweet and friendly cat who is a year and a half old. He was originally brought to the shelter along with his brother, but his brother was adopted — and Oz was not! Instead, he was left behind, to wait for the right person to come along. If you think you could be that person, the adoption fee for Oz is only $35.

«

CINNAMON is a very sweet younger girl. She loves to be pet, and is very affectionate. She would make a great lap cat. Not only is she friendly and cuddly, her unique coloration is eye-catching and gives her a lot of personality! If you’re looking for a friendly younger cat, Cinnamon could be the one for you! Her adoption fee is $70.

BRANDO is a big, roly-poly guy who really wants a home! He is five years old, very friendly, and loves to be pet, but he can become very nervous at times. He’s been trying to come out of his shell, but he needs a home environment to really thrive. If you think you could give him the home he needs, his adoption fee is only $20.
