MOST folks coming to Cape May for a visit want to slow down the pace of their lives, whether it’s by building a sandcastle on the beach, riding a bike past West Cape May’s farmland or dining out at a fun or exotic restaurant.

So, on this purposefully slow piece of earth, it’s not surprising that Cape Island is not known for its fast food. You won’t find any golden arches or pig-tailed redheads offering burgers. More our style is the new restaurant opening Memorial Day weekend, Beachside Smokehouse, which will offer the ultimate in slow food: barbecued meat that’s been smoked for 12 to 14 hours.

Cape May has not lacked for good restaurants, but an eatery dedicated to barbecue has not been an offering until recently.

So, on a breezy porch a few months ago, two gentlemen who have known the restaurant business practically from birth, Steve

Fischer and Bill Freitz, were sipping Jack Daniels and eating some barbecue they had smoked that very afternoon. Fischer is known for Baby Blues BBQ in Philadelphia and Freitz of the Savona in Gulph Mills, Pennsylvania.

Joining them on the porch that evening was Sean Conners, the chef who ran the former 32-seat Sean’s on Beach Avenue and was a much-loved waiter at Gecko’s. He had an idea for a restaurant with a menu combining sweet, tangy barbecue with fresh seafood and local produce.

“They brought me on board to incorporate some seafood dishes, some vegetarian dishes and run with a few of the salads,” said Sean.

Like the birth of the blues, they nursed it and rehearsed it and now occupy the one-time site of Daniel’s on Broadway, Moonfish Grille and the Cooper Fish, in one of the county’s oldest homes, 416 South Broadway, once known as the Whilldin-Miller house. Historian Joan Berkey dated the back

portion of the structure to 1730 or earlier.

Sean closed his restaurant after an unfortunate turn of events. He was showing off on a bicycle at a skate park for his nine-year old and five-year-old sons and did a 360 that crushed his ankle. Unable to stand, it was time to close the doors of his restaurant. Now healed and happy, the chef said he can’t wait to cook again here. “I really missed preparing food for Cape May,” he said.

While barbecue and seafood will be the draw at Beachside Smokehouse, Sean also cooks vegetarian. Both his sons were raised on such a diet.

Some of the game on the menu will be unusual — think ostrich, emu and elk tenderloin, he said. The restaurant has teamed up with Fossil Farms of Boonton, NJ which offers organic meat products free of growth hormones, antibiotics, medications

One goal is restore the restaurant’s building to its historic roots.

The back room features the original fireplace with ceiling beams that were once part of whaling boats. Wide-plank wood floors in several dining rooms were covered with carpet or tile, something that will eventually be removed to restore the historic flavor of each room, Sean said.

A patio area will also be available for dining. One of the second floor dining rooms offers a view of the Cape May Lighthouse.

Beachside Smokehouse will use both indoor and outdoor smokers which can be moved for catering.

The barbecue menu will include ribs, beef brisket, chuck burgers and pork. Sean said barbecue requires a lot of preparation time including a rub which remains on the meat for a day.

Another day is spent marinating the meat. Then it remains in the smoker for 12 to 14 hours, he said.

“It’s good comfort food and I think the building and the food will match very well,” he told us.

Steve added that different types of wood, such as hickory, cherry and apple, will be used to smoke the meat. Sweeter woods are better for pork, hickory best for brisket and ribs and a combination of cherry and apple wood for chicken and poultry, he said Should barbecued meat fall off the bone? Steve said the meat should have a little “grab” on the bone. “If you can pull the bone clean right out, you know that it’s been parboiled or steamed,” he said. While that is not bad, it is a different process which diminishes the authentic bark flavor.

As for prices... they’ll be kept in a range that will allow families to eat happily. “If you want to come in and get a $7 to $8 pork sandwich, we’ve got it,” Steve said.

“If you want a fantastic, freshlysmoked rack of ribs for 23 bucks, we’ve got it.”

While two partners have roots in Philly, Sean’s job is to bring in his knowledge of what diners in

Cape May will enjoy. Local produce from Rea’s Farm and others may be incorporated into the barbecue sauce.

“I think everything tastes better the less hands that touch it,” he said. “We’re resourcing our local farms, our local wineries just to see what we can incorporate.”

Those on gluten-free diets will be accommodated, Sean said.

PS: Another barbecue restaurant, the Cape May Smokehouse, has taken over the site of the former Lemon Tree restaurant on the mall.

“I have no interest in a basic, generic shop with chrome racks in the center,” he told us. “I want a shop that’s going to excite people when they walk in the door. That’s where the name, Galvanic, comes from. It means to have an electrifying effect.”

It’s a goal that might be hard to picture — right now, Galvanic is gutted, with a dirt floor and naked support beams that leave everything to the imagination — if it weren’t for Ryan’s enthusiasm.

When he speaks about the space, you can’t help but get swept up in the excitement of an industrial vibe complete with concrete floors, walls made of reclaimed wood from north Jersey barns and Atlantic City’s post-Hurricane Sandy boardwalk, and old-school, gymnasium-style lighting. “That’s very important to me,” Ryan said.

“Even in my own home, I’m constantly dimming the lights.”

On the loft space above his customers, Ryan will project “any kind of cool exciting videos,” like one of a guy making reclaimed wood tables in Vermont, or fashioning bicycle frames in California. And those are just the plans that are definite; the permits are still underway for the rest of the ideas Ryan and project architect Rich — of Steven Starr restaurant fame — have ironed out.

But a stimulating atmosphere can only get a shop so far, Ryan realizes, which is where the merchandise comes in.

“Cape May is a difficult place to find men’s apparel,” he said. “So, while we’ll carry women’s clothing eventually, I wanted to make sure I fill that niche right off the bat.”

And fill it well.

“I knew I wanted board shorts, but I didn’t want Hurley or Billabong. I looked for the smaller, grassroots people who don’t want to be in PacSun, for instance.

These companies have no inter-

est in being just another shirt in a rack. A lot of the manufacturers in New York wanted to check me out as much as I wanted to check them out.”

Among the brands Ryan will carry is Philadelphia-based Iron and Resin, the most passionate jean-maker he could find.

“They’re stamping the leather patches on the back by hand,” he said. “You visit this company, and it makes you want to make jeans.”

Then there’s the cutting-edge sunglass line, Ivy, for which Ryan is the only east coast rep. And the handbags by Krochet Kids, the sales of which benefit economic growth in developing nations. Or the “hard” products, like handcarved tables, surfboards, and skateboards that are as much works of arts as they are practical. “Mostly, it excites me to be doing something I can constantly change,” Ryan said. “I want the shop to look a little different every time people come in.”

While Ryan admits to being nervous about the venture, we’ve

got a feeling he’s going to be a natural. After all, running a Cape May business is in the Platzer blood… his father, Mark, was a long-time owner of the C-View Inn. And, actually, being a Cape Mayan is in his blood, too.

“I left for Florida for a while to get my captain’s license and work on commercial fishing boats,” Ryan told us. “But there’s something about this place that draws you back. I’m so excited to be back on dry land and, most importantly, to be back in this place.”

Cape Equality NEW Jersey’s reputation leaves much to be desired. It’s a chuckleworthy reality, considering Cape May alone has been ranked nationally for our beaches, bed and breakfasts, and overall vibe. Maybe you’ve heard about Garden State Equality already.

This is the only American, statewide civil rights organization to be featured in an Oscar-winning documentary, AKA Freeheld. Not such a surprising accomplishment when you consider that, since the organization’s founding in 2004, 213 LGBT Civil Rights laws have been enacted. In 2012, it was largely the work of Garden State Equality that led to the the marriage equality bill (later vetoed by Governor Christie).

But this grassroots effort, 125,000 members strong, isn’t devoted to bettering the lives of only one demographic; this is a collective which campaigns for the rights of all ages, orientations, and faiths. It was GSE who fought

for the passage of New Jersey’s groundbreaking anti-bullying law, which the New York Times calls the nation’s greatest legal deterrent to harassment — of all students — in American schools.

“But there is still a ways to go,” GSE Field Manager Michael Maher told us. “When you look at New Jersey’s Constitution, the promise of equality for all people is outlined clearly. We need to look at what’s not being done, and what we need to do to fix it.”

In order to engage the community, Garden State Equality holds town meeting sessions, like the one at the Old Cape May County Courthouse. We were told about the event by Anne McCabe, a local therapist and child welfare consultant, but such meetings have been attended by tens of thousands across the state. On tap, according to Michael, are the issues of marriage equality and bullying, specifically.

New SOMA Gallery Show Features South Jersey Trio If you love beautiful images of Cape May, you won’t want to miss it

EEN suffering from art withdrawal through the winter?

SOMA NewArt Gallery’s first exhibition of the year features three solo exhibitions

by South Jersey artists: Carol King Hood, Marie Natale and Leslie Martel. Two of the shows feature beautiful images of Cape May attractions and architecture.

In Gallery One, “Indoor Spaces/Outside Places” features new watercolors by nationally acclaimed award-winning artist Marie Natale. Her new work is designed to highlight the myriad ways in which light creates the essence of a great painting. Using a variety of watercolor techniques, Natale explores the illumination of ambiance that light creates in locations indoors and out.

Her knowledge of art theory and design, along with her rich palette of color, give vibrant life to her iconic paintings of Victorian houses, indoor and outdoor cafés and meeting places, rustic boat shacks and seaside landscapes. All her paintings share her masterful style

of light, charm, beauty, and peacefulness.

Natale states as her goal “to use my talents to make the world a brighter place, and to share with others the happiness that art has brought into my life.”

Natale will also be painting Exit Zero’s color issue covers this year, so look out for those.

In Gallery Two, SOMA presents “The Plentiful Palette” by Leslie Martel, a dedicated student of Marie Natale. Her work embraces the elements of collage, watercolor and acrylic, using intense color, overlaying collage and paint, producing abstractions of the obvious things around us.

In Gallery Three, Cape May Point artist, Carol King Hood is exhibiting “Kumbayah”, which willl feature 33 oil paintings inspired by the simple lives and history of the nuns of St. Joseph’s and their summers at Saint Mary’s by the Sea retreat house in Cape May Point.

Hood, an admirer of plein air painting, uses this technique and her own signature style of brilliant colors and strong paint-

erly brush stokes to capture the everyday life of the residing nuns who roam the retreat’s premises and nearby surroundings. Her exhibit will also explore the history of the Sisters before and after Vatican II; the shedding of the Habit for more contemporary clothing. The title, “Kumbayah” symbolizes social change through peaceful means, which is the work/mission of the Sister’s today.

The exhibit will be on view at SOMA Gallery from May 11 to June 9. An Opening Artist Reception will be held on May 11 from 6pm to 9pm. All art lovers are invited to attend the opening reception, meet the artists, and enjoy an evening of art, music, conversation, light food and drink.

S PROMISED, my last mention of anything Beatlesrelated until at least October. But first… Beatles Night III! The Love Me Dudes had a fantastic time at The Bayshore Inn last Saturday as we mounted our third Beatles show of the offseason (see pictures in these pages). Another 20 or so pro and amateur musicians from around the county came in and plied their wares before an appreciative crowd. To wit; Local open mic legend Carl Behrens busted out his new axe (a Fender?) for his tunes, the highlight of which was “Why Don’t We Do It in the Road”, which earned him a quarter in his guitar case from me.

Carl performed early in the evening but stayed until very late with Patti and danced like no one was watching (the best way to dance).

Rob Cummiskey (lead singer, Five Hour Jones), after a long, torturous Facebook chat, finally shucked off the skirt and hit us with “Hey, Jude” (hard to mess that one up, but he delivered it well). For such a talented, good-

looking guy, Rob is pretty insecure. Let’s all help keep him that way. (I kid, Rob… I kid… but Jen Dowe says Rob we can’t be friends.)

Mary Sexton (bartendress, Cabanas) killed it with “Oh, Darling” and “Something.” To the 27 amateur sound engineers who came up and asked us to turn her mic up I say (a) it was already on 10 and (b) shut up!

I suggest you bypass the band, go directly to the singer and say “Sing louder.”

Now, in Mary’s defense, we had issues with the PA system all night. My little karaoke amp didn’t have enough juice to fill a room like the Bayshore. I’m quite lucky the damn thing didn’t melt into a blob of acridsmelling molten slag by about 11pm.

Mary was still sore at me for ragging on her stumblehomeability a couple weeks back, and I have to admit, I saw no stumbling Saturday night. It was more of a stagger. (Mary, punch my left shoulder next time; my right is still healing.)

There were many, many other notables, like Mikey Alimo, Kathy Martino, Dan Burke, Matt Holman, Patty Wiley, Sean Eisele and others I’m forgetting. Without your support we never would have gotten past Beatles Night 1 in January.

We then followed this show with a surprise, unannounced-til-the-last-minute Beatles Night IV at the Anglesea Pub. It was attended about as well as you’d expect a surprise, unannounced, non-holiday Sunday night in late April to be, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t fun! Lots of the usual suspects came out for this free-flowing, open mic-y show. We actually tried really hard to make this a second Billy Joel show but couldn’t quite swing it, so the ever-affable Sean McMullan said, “Ok, Beatles then!”

A little birdie tells me that there are now several bands in the area trying to put together their own themed open mic shows (I’ve heard Elton John and Led Zeppelin) to which I say (a) imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, you jerks! And (b) good luck. Whatever gets people out and celebrating local music is cool with me. Though if any Beatles or Billy Joel bands spring up there WILL be a West Side Story-like knife fight under the bridge. (Whistle-snapleap!)

I’m happy to announce that Rio Station has extended “Open Mic with Terri and Bill” through May. (Ahem… Terry, Rio people.) So for at least four more Thursdays you can come out and experience what has turned into a cool night of music and fellowship. And if you haven’t seen Chris South on the power ukulele you haven’t lived.

Ok, so… I may have been a little harsh last week in my assessment of the parking/ pick-up situation at Cape May Fitness Center (Bayshore Road in North Cape May) last week.

Well, the assessment of the situation wasn’t harsh, just factual. But I did not mean to take anything away from Mike and Destiny Wilson’s beautiful new exercise and dance facility. It is quite stunning. So, congratulations. It is well-earned.

But, back to the point; now that I’ve railed long and loud about it, I’d like to offer a solution. Perhaps one of the dance moms or teachers, or one of the older, more responsible students can act as a sort-of crossing guard. You can get a nifty orange vest for probably $20 at Lowe’s. Or maybe some signs

can be posted, like “Please don’t park here to pick up your child, please park 20-feet TO YOUR LEFT and WALK INSIDE.” Yes, I speak from an angry place, but it’s only because I don’t want anyone to get hurt.

Yes, I’m the guy in the grey hoodie and baseball cap staring disgustedly at you while I walk inside to get my son. I’m the laziest ass there is. If I can do it, you can do it.

So I, uh, I wasn’t invited back to The Mad Batter for that April Terry O’ke show as had been discussed. If it was because of my little temper tantrum in March, please allow me to apologize once again. I’d hate to be here 20 years, finally get a cool gig like the Batter, then lose it because I’m an a-hole. To be clear; there is absolutely no denying my churlish behavior on the night in question, but it was extremely, extremely outof-character for me. Honest.

Overheard at EZ HQ: “My dad stopped reading because he says it’s too conservative.” Ha! If three non-fawning mentions of President Obama in Exit Zero makes it a conservative newspaper then… well, hold on… I guess that would be three more non-fawning mentions of President Obama than you’d find in any other newspaper, so… EXIT ZERO! THE CONSERVATIVE VOICE OF THE JERSEY CAPE! Shark Jump Warning of the Week: Noted show-killer Ted McGinley, an actor whose appearance on just about any TV show leads to its immediate demise (Happy Days, Love Boat, etc) appeared on AMC’s stellar Mad Men last week. However, it is my hope the fact that he was playing a swinging, bisexual TV producer might offset his murderous karmic influence.

4/17: Explorer Girls At Cape Island Baptist Church

«

The Explorer Girls of Cape Island Baptist Church meet Wednesday nights from October through May for singing, Bible study, and the planning of special mission projects, like singing for Victorian Towers residents or taking collections for the Cape May Food Closet.

This particular event was the culmination of a month-long project called “Have a Heart for Homeless Pets.” The Explorers — there are up to 30 of them at one time, ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade — brought in various donations for the Animal Outreach shelter in West Cape May. “It’s so rewarding to see these girls on Wednesday nights, to worship with them, and teach them about faith and the plans that God has for their lives,” said program coordinator Tracey Martin. “We often learn as much from the girls as we teach them. And they might be ‘just’ school-age girls, but look what they’ve accomplished for Animal Outreach! The photo doesn’t even include everythihg we collected.” I feel blessed to be a part of this group.”

A special shout-out to the rest of the congregation for their constant support.

Many know that our fair city was named for the Dutch ship captain who first explored the area in the 1600s: Cornelius Mey. Something else the Dutch are responsible for? Spreading the popularity of the beautiful tulip flower... 1,500 of which were planted on the Congress Hall grounds this spring. Here are some other little known, tulip-related factoids: There are over 3,000 different varieties of tulips.

At about the same time Captain Mey reached our shores, the economy of the Netherlands went through an enourmous decline due to... tulips. They were so popular that bulbs were being sold for huge amounts of money... enough to buy a home in the most affable city sections. When the market declined, the rest of the Netherlands went down with it.

Tulips are actually edible; the petals make a great addition to a salad or dessert.

Every spring, tulip festivals are held all over the world. The Canadian Tulip Festival is one of the largest, lasting for 18 days and displaying over 300,000 flowers.

ET us raise a toast to the end of Cape May’s archaic alcohol laws. Finally, after a few decades of exhaustive legal research and the services of some of Cape May’s finest private investigators (we have three, to be exact: one is an escapee from the Cape May Home For the Eccentric and Annoying, and believes himself to be the living reincarnation of Sherlock Holmes; the other two are of that sort of person who commonly washes up in Cape May with a fervent desire to start life anew, ideally with no-one from their previous existence turning up later to question their choice of an exotic European surname and distracting facial hair) we have worked out a watertight way around the current restrictive rules. I will not bore you with details: suffice it to say that our fair city will go from a paucity of liquor licenses to — let me consult my notes here — ah yes, one per permanent citizen. From June 30 this year, the new drinking laws will be rather simple: every man jack of you (excepting those persons born in Wildwood, who are not, under

a minor stature linked to the loophole, to be permitted ever to drink alcohol again, which I am sure you will agree is a minor price to pay) will be your own walking/tottering liquor license.

You will not only be legally allowed to drink alcohol between 10am and 2am the following day, every day except Sunday, but you will be able to serve and sell a long list of intoxicating beverages to one another, and to out-of-towners. Prices will be set at a shilling for a beer to citizens/ $100 to visitors, a sixpence for a tot of rum and a

dollar for a Cosmopolitan so long as that drink shall not be less of a measure than 10 gallons.

Of course, there is one minor condition to this new era of openness: the licensed premises/individual needs to have a minimum of 30 drinks served in it per day to avoid breaching the conditions of the law.

That means that every one of you/us will be required to drink those 30 drinks personally, with no skimping. The moment one person fails to meet this quota, we are all in default of the law, and the old licensing system will kick in.

In preparation, I have decided to start rehearsing right now: Kitchener is rolling a cask of rum from the basement and I will be requiring all household staff and animals to drink the content before dawn. We will be setting up on street corners from this week, and should you pass, you will also be compelled to drink a pint of the searing liquid love, or face a sound thrashing.

4/19: Wildwood Catholic’s Casino Night At Convention Hall

While this was the Third Annual Casino Night benefiting Wildwood Catholic High School, it was the first to be held at Cape May’s Convention Hall, and it was a slam dunk. “This was even more successful than last year,” said PTA President Valarie Sorensen. “And there was even more community involvement than years past. It was such a great feeling that night.”

A record 250 people (including one couple all the way from Virginia) turned up to support the school and enjoy the Boardwalk Empire-themed evening, which included not only a Frank Sinatra cover singer, but casino games and the donated food of area restaurants like Isand Grill, Washington Inn, Harbor View, and Pier House. Then, of course, there were the costumes. “The school’s president, Father Wallace, came dressed as Nucky,” Valarie said.

hrough this up-close encounter and interactive discussion, learn about the amazing life history of the horseshoe crab and its ecological connection to other wildlife in the Delaware Bay. Horseshoe crabs are an ancient species related to spiders not crabs. During spring they migrate to the shores of Delaware Bay to spawn. Adult females each lay up to 80,000 tiny green eggs in the sand. These gentle horseshoe crabs are an important part of the coastal food chain, have been used in medical research for many years, and are harvested by commercial fisherman.

Gretchen L. Whitman, a graduate of Rutgers University with a B.S. in Biology, has served for almost fifteen years as Sanctuary Director of New Jersey Audubon’s southernmost environmental education center, the Nature Center of Cape May. A former environmental specialist and project manager, Whitman oversees daily operations of this award-winning facility, and has been instrumental in expanding the Center’s campus-like setting of five buildings – doubling usable classroom, retail and office space.

She is committed to making the Nature Center a model for sustainable facilities management and greening practices.

Fourteen-year-old Morgan Bradshaw, the daughter of Keith and Dawn Bradshaw, participated in St. Baldrick’s Day on March 28, when she shaved her head for the very first time in order to raise money for pediatric cancer research.

“Some girls don’t have the choice to have long hair,” said Bradshaw. “It is a good organization so try and donate.”

“Friends By Your Side” is another organization where Bradshaw will donate her hair for wigs that will be made for people with cancer.

Also participating in cheerleading, all of the school’s talent shows, and swimming, Bradshaw will certainly make an impact on LCMR over the next three years.

Here’s To Your Health

TOP breathing for 50 seconds or so, and you come face to face with your mortality. Oxygen is our life source. Rarely, though, are we even conscious of it. And, since it’s automatic, we tend to assume the mechanism is working just fine.

But, according to Allison McConnell, PH.D., author of Breathe Strong, Perform Better we use only 50 to 60 percent of our available lung capacity. We rely too heavily on our chest muscles instead of our diaphragm, a malleable structure that sits just below the lungs. Its sole job is to pull air into the lungs as it expands.

It then clings to red blood cells as they pass through capillaries and on to the rest of the body. As the diaphragm contracts, it pushes carbon dioxide out on the exhale.

Runners breathe (a lot). But according to Running On Air by Budd Coates, they’ve got a lot to learn on the subject. At age 55, Budd ran a 2:13 marathon — fast at any age. In fact, he’s run a sub-three hour marathon in five different decades throughout his life. So what gives?

He credits Rhythmic Breathing, a technique he developed 30 years ago. This is where you

pair your breathing (inhalations and exhalations) with your running cadence (number of foot strikes).

Back to the diaphragm: It’s one thing to sit in a chair or yoga class and breathe deeply, fully expelling on the exhale, but what about when running or biking uphill as fast as you can? The issue then becomes how fast you can get air into the lungs.

A group of us do just this two times per week on the West Cape May Bridge. The distance is .112 miles (just over one-tenth of a mile). It takes between 40 seconds and 1:05 and leaves you gasping for air at the top. About halfway through, your body switches from

fully oxygenating your leg muscles to diverting those resources to the diaphragm to keep it pumping. Your legs feel heavy and wooden and your speed decelerates fast. This happens to everyone who is truly giong full bore to the top. (Distance runners can really benefit from this type of training as it increases both endurance and speed.)

Increasing the diaphragm strength to pull and push then, as is the case with any muscle, will provide more life force throughout any workout you choose. And this is where Rhythmic Breathing comes into play.

When you breathe out, your core relaxes, reducing stability, which increases the risk of injury. Most runners breathe out on the same foot each time, so over a long distance this weakens that side. By varying the in and out cadence you will insure each side bears the same load. Also, by controlling the number of exhales to inhales, like with a three to one ratio, you will have more oxygen, longer. It obviously takes practice. Start with three out and two in at a jogging pace.

Now, take a few minutes. Breathe deeply.

Exhale. And repeat as often as needed.

Dear Answer Lady, My husband and I are expecting our first child late this summer, and we are beside ourselves with joy. We live in Pennsylvania, but visit Cape May several times a year, and that is where our child was conceived. We just found out we’re having a girl, and want to name her after the place we stayed on that visit, but fear that people will hate the name for being so unusual. We know that names are important, and feel it’s important not to saddle our child with something completely ridiculous, but we feel this name would work. Do we go with our gut, or follow the herd? — Mama Dear Mama, You realize you now have the Answer Lady and everyone who reads her column wondering what the name for your precious baby girl could be… Macomber? Montreal?

La Mer? But the Answer Lady digresses.

(Wilbraham? Please don’t say Wilbraham.

The Answer Lady loves the Wilbraham, but please.) When she was pregnant with her own daughter, the Answer Lady had her heart set on an adorable name, but her husband was vehemently against it, and her now dear-departed mother sided with him, somehow. Therefore, the Answer Lady’s daughter was named after the Comcast man, but that is a story for another time.

(The Star Inn? Star’s a nice name.) You are

correct that care must be taken, as names are somewhat permanent. Perhaps “May” for a middle name will simplify things if your child’s given name is… unwieldy.

(Was it the Victorian Motel?) And never mind what other people say, dear. It is your child, it is your life. That “never mind what other people say” business is truly all-purpose advice. Use it generously. (Linda Lee? Elaine’s? Virginia Hotel?)

Dear Answer Lady, Our family just adopted a great dog a couple of days ago from the Cape May County Animal Shelter. He is wonderful and we love him as much as he seems to love us. The only thing we really don’t love so much is his name, so we’re going to change it. The problem is, we can’t agree on one! I want one name, my wife wants another, our son a third. How do we resolve this? — Rover’s Dad Dear Rover’s Dad, The Answer Lady can only sugeest that you put the three names in contention into a hat, have a neutral party fish one out, and voila, dog is named. You’re welcome.

The Movie Column

This week, Maria Knapp, Cape May Film Society Member, reviews “Oblivion”

HE new sci-fi movie, Oblivion, reminds us of how good original science fiction can be. As much as I love the Marvel and DC characters, it was nice to go into a movie without superheroes.

The plot? The earth is invaded by aliens.

We use nuclear force and win, but unfortunately the world is left uninhabitable.

Humans evacuate the planet and are living in a colony on Titan. There is one final task before Earth can be fully abandoned. The remaining sea water is being transformed into energy for use on Titan.

Tom Cruise plays Jack and Andrea Riseborough plays his partner Victoria.

His job is to fix the drones that are trying to finish off the remaining aliens on earth.

Victoria is his navigator. In two weeks, the couple should be done and heading back to Titan. Jack, though, is ambiguous about leaving Earth. He still finds himself drawn to it. I won’t reveal any more of the plot. Suffice it to say that I am one of those people who figures out endings early, but

“Oblivion” is science fiction that will restore your faith in science fiction, says our reviewer. the twists and turns of this story kept me guessing.

It is not surprising that this is a big budget movie and beautifully shot. (It is a Tom Cruise flick.) I did not see it in 3D, but that’s not important. Sure the floating station where Jack and Victoria live would be incredible in 3D, especially the pool that just hangs in the air. But this film doesn’t have the kinds of small details that made

the 3D in Avatar so important, like flowers blooming or lizards crawling.

Everybody’s acting is fine. Tom Cruise was, well, Tom Cruise. You like him. You want to find out his story. He is supported by the excellent cast of Andrea Riseborough, Olga Kurylenko, Morgan Freeman, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Riseborough plays the part of Victoria so well, the viewer is aware of something ever-so-slightly off between her and Jack, but is left guessing as to what this could be. Morgan Freeman, well, he plays Morgan Freeman. But we like Morgan Freeman, so ok. Coster-Waldau will look familiar to Game of Throne fans... he doesn’t get a lot of screen time, but he is nicely brooding when he does.

Overall, I highly recommend the film to people who enjoy science fiction. And don’t worry. As complex and interesting as the plot is, all is explained well by the end.

So just enjoy it and don’t fret if you’re not “getting” it straightaway.

4/24: The Mermaid Guild Presents Basket To Winner At Flying Fish

«

The Mermaid Guild started out as a way for female business owners in the community to do group advertising since — as co-founder Pat Jackson told us — “there is power in numbers.”

But over the last six years, the Mermaid Guild has evolved into a philanthropic collective. (They’re the ones who’ve raised nearly $80,000 for the Community Food Bank of New Jersey at their yearly bachelor auctions.) But the MG is, perhaps, best known for its basket giveaway. Every year, the group’s 31 members donate an item or gift certificate worth at least $100. Then, they take the basket to as many fundraisers as possible.

(Marilyn Sweeney, who bought her chance at a Volunteers in Medicine Benefit last summer, was selected in December, but she was away all winter, and was finally able to retrive her prize last month.) “I’m pretty proud of the Mermaid Guild,” Pat told us.

“When we go to fundraisers now, we hardly ever have to explain who we are. In a small town like this, it’s so rewarding to see how your community responds.”

FTER a day at the beach, nothing is more luxurious than a nice, long shower, yet most of us take water for granted. Even in Cape May, where water is so crucial to our major industries, it takes an interruption, or a really high water bill, to remind us what a valuable resource clean water is. Learn more about water when Cape May Forum presents “Water Matters” on May 18.

Luxury led to a water crisis in Victorian London, when wealthy residents installed the latest modern convenience — the flush toilet.

Untreated sewage poured into the Thames, which was still the source of the city’s drinking water. Death from water-borne illnesses rose to historic levels. Progress in sanitation was slow, and it wasn’t until Benjamin Disraeli’s “Ministry of Sewage” in the 1870s that the problem was fully addressed. In the United States, cities faced similar issues. Philadelphia abandoned well water in 1800 because of contamination from privies, instead pumping water from the Schuykill and Delaware Rivers. In 1902, water filtration began, and

Don Belt discusses “Water Wars: A Geographic Perspective.”

Saturday afternoon, after the speeches, take a trolley ride to Cape May’s desalination plant for a water tasting. Box lunches will be provided. Then, on Sunday morning, return to Convention Hall at 10:30am for “Rango,” a clever animated movie dealing with water shortages, presented with the Cape May Film Society. 4/21: Surprise Bridal Shower For Talia Piacentine At Oyster Bay

Talia Piacentine is not easy to surprise. But her friends outdid themselves... they invited Talia to so many different places that by the time they arrived at Oyster Bay — the site of her actual bridal shower — she didn’t suspect a thing.

“Oyster Bay’s new bar is so nice, and my bridesmaids — I have 12 of them — did a wonderful job decorating.

I’m lucky to have such a great group of friends,” she told us.

So who is Talia’s bethrothed? Jim McCullen, a former middle school classmate of the bride-to-be. He started coming into Oyster Bay, where Talia works as a bartender, in order to ask her out, and she kept turning him down... until a pal changed her mind.

“We all worked out at the same gym,” Talia said, “and my friend kept saying to me, ‘You have to date that guy.’” Not surprisingly, that friend is now one of Talia’s 12 bridesmaids, thrilled to be part of the wedding happening here on Cape Island May 11.
