Walk On

THE human species runs the achievement gamut; there are those of us whose greatest accomplishment is beating a skee ball record at the arcade, and there are those of us who do something remarkable to make a difference in this world. Most fall somewhere in between but, if we’re very lucky, we happen to encounter a handful of folks, over the course of our lives, who fall into the latter group. The Cape May Forum consistently brings such movers and shakers to Cape May, in order to facilitate discussion about issues that matter to our community and our world. For this year’s Forum, “Water Matters,” event organizers didn’t have to look too far. One of the speakers on the docket for the May 18 presentation at Convention Hall, featuring explorers from

National Geographic Live!, is West Cape May’s John Francis, better known as the Planetwalker. We caught up with John, a 67-year-old Philadelphia native, in the Sixth Avenue home he shares with his wife Martha and their two boys, 12-year-old Sam and six-year-old Luke. It’s a house his parents purchased when he was just about Luke’s age. “This is still a rural area,” he told us, “but it was even more rural back then. Sixth Avenue was still a pebbly road. I loved Cape May even as a child.” But the house was only a summer cottage at the time — John attended school in his hometown of North Philadelphia. Eventually, he enrolled in La Salle University, but dropped out in the 60s to leave for California and be part of the cultural revolution happening at the time. “What does it mean to

be a hippie? I wore beads,” John joked, adding, on a serious note, that the movement at the time was about getting back to the land. Still, “environment” wasn’t yet a buzz word, and John wasn’t yet an active conservationist. His focus was largely monopolized by the angst of the Vietnam War, and the great number of his friends who’d been drafted… that is, until a 1971 oil spill — 800,000 gallons strong — in the San Francisco Bay changed everything. “If you’ve never seen an oil spill,” John said, “you don’t want to. It’s one thing to read about it in the newspaper from 1,000 miles away. It’s a different thing to have to witness it in person.” The birds whose wings became coated in crude were an especially jarring image for John,

A BIG shout-out to local James Pask who recently defended his Ph.D. dissertation entitled The Role of Antimicrobial Skin Peptides in Defense of Leopard Frogs Against Chytridiomycosis ( yowza!) at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. James is the 2003 salutatorian of Wildwood Catholic High School. He is currently adjunct faculty at Austin Peay State University, teaching courses in Genetics and Introduction to Biology, and he’ll graduate with his Ph.D this month.

From Page 13 who calls his childhood pastime of caring for the injured animals a rite of passage. “If one fell from a tree and hurt a wing, I would feed it and nurse it back to health, and this helped me become a person more attuned to nature, and the idea of something beyond the self,” he said. “This oil spill brought me back.” The following year, John gave up riding in motorized vehicles, a vow that would last 22 years. It was an oath so startling, so unheard of, some people reacted with hostility. “I found myself arguing so much about the environment and about the walking that I thought, ‘Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about.’” So John gave up talking, too, a vow that would last 17 years. In 1983, he left the west coast, where he’d been working as a band manager and volunteer firefighter, and began walking east, on a silent journey — self-described as “crazy” — that would take him

across the nation. “I wanted to listen,” he said. “I wanted to listen and not say ‘No,’ or ‘Let me tell you what I think,’ or ‘I don’t believe it,’ or ‘That’s not true,’ or ‘I don’t think that way.’ I was going to listen and hear and learn.” And learn, John did. He earned three degrees on his trip, including a Bachelors in science and math from Southern Oregon University, a Masters in environmental science from the University of Montana, and a PhD in Land Resources from the University of Wisconsin. But his greatest lesson was one he never heard from a professor at a podium. “As I listened,” he said, “I realized that ‘environment’ does not pertain only to loss of species, loss of habitat, pollution and all of those things we traditionally think about. If we are indeed a part our own environment, then our first opportunity to treat the environment in a sustainable way — or to even understand what we mean by sustainability — is to reevaluate the way we treat one another. This is our first chance to affect

the environment in a positive way. Coming after that are human rights and civil rights and gender equality and economic equity. All of these things are a part of the environment.” Nothing broke John. When he needed to work — as a musician playing his banjo in various bars and restaurants, as a workstudy student at his university, or as a printer in South Dakota — he did so in silence. Even the college courses he began teaching along the way — one of them a lecture on discussion, no less — were taught in silence. “Every year on my birthday, I’d reevaluate,” he said. “I’d ask if this is working, and I’d think to myself, ‘You’re still learning, so keep your mouth shut and keep walking’.” But on the 20th anniversary of Earth Day, appropriately, John decided it was time for his message to be heard. So in Washington, DC, he startled himself with the sound of his own voice. “It took a minute to realize it was me

up where he left off the year before, this time with university students by his side (several universities offer credit for the experience). And last weekend saw the airing of the BBC World service program for which John was recently interviewed. It is called, coincidentally, “Forum.” Now, John — who likes to walk about two hours a day in Cape May — is preparing to share his knowledge at Cape May Forum’s upcoming event… although, he admitted to us, he’s just as excited about speaking at career day at West Cape May Elementary School, where his sons — both of them members of the Cape May Waves swim team — are enrolled. We asked the Planetwalker, as the father of these two young boys, how he feels about the state of the planet’s future. “It is simple,” he said. “I really do believe everyone has the power within themselves to be part of positive change. If everyone in our state, in our borough, even just on

All About Boats

THERE was no cotton candy, no water-skiing squirrels, no bounce houses or funnel cake kiosks at the Strictly Boaters Boat Show May 3-5 at South Jersey Marina. It was a boat show for boat owners, boat lovers and boat sellers, not wannabees or folks waiting for their ship to come in so they can buy a yacht. “How many times can you hear ‘When I win the lottery,’” asked South Jersey Marina’s Mark Allen, the show manager. Some time ago South Jersey Marina had a beautiful new ocean yacht in a boat show located to the north of our county. Someone

decided to change their baby’s diaper in the main stateroom of the yacht, ruining a new comforter in the process. That was an eye opener. Thus was born the Strictly Boater’s Show. It was not a carnival or a place to buy a ShamWow, it was boats, boats and more boats. It was boats you could trailer and boats so big you’d need to hire Alan Hale Jr. from Gilligan’s Island to bring it into a dock. On opening day, which dawned windy and chilly, an owner of a 55-footer was backing up, cursing, running engines forward and reverse and yelling at his young crew members to tie up his million-dollar yacht in the choppy seas. This year’s show featured 12 dealers with offerings that could tempt 20-somethings looking for an $11,800 Yamaha Wave Runner or a wealthy old salt looking for a 50-foot Viking yacht with fly bridge for over $1 million.

From Page 16 Having the show in a marina offered an opportunity for prospective boat buyers to take the boat out for a sea trial, not just walk through on dry land and imagine how it handled. Deals were made and people went home with shiny new vessels or arranged for delivery. The event was designed to be part of a weekend stay in Cape May, to allow for enjoying everything the city has to offer in spring, despite a temperature that stalled around 59 degrees. Congress Hall offered special room rates for attendees. A

number of attendees on opening day were men past the age of 50 walking in groups, many wearing caps bearing the name of a boat manufacturer or distant marina. Mark said many came with their wives, most of whom were absent from South Jersey Marina, preferring instead to shop and sightsee in Cape May. Boat owners on average buy a new vessel every two to three years, said Mark, although there was an uptick in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy as owners headed to dealers clutching their insurance checks. New Jersey Outboards of Bayville brought 15 boats to the show, 12 on land and three in the

water, including product from Sea Hunt, Steiger Craft, Godfrey Pontoon boats, Hurricane Deck boats and Yamaha outboards. Co-owner Paul Gioe Jr. said he expected to sell boats at the show, and that they specialized in 21- to 24-foot affordable boats, ranging in price from $20,000 to $80,000. You don’t have to be rich to own a boat — you can finance one for up to 15 years with monthly payments of $200 to $300, said Paul. If you buy a boat with a price tag over $50,000, you can stretch your payments to 20 years. Although a 20-year-old car will probably be in the junkyard, chances are your boat will still be in use at that age, he said. Steve of Langhorne, Pennsylvania. was in a tent, escaping the wind, shopping for marine electronics. He had purchased a boat at the previous year’s show. It escaped damage because he sold it three days before Hurricane Sandy made landfall, he said. John and Sue Ferguson

of Brigantine were looking at a gleaming white 40-foot boat with fly bridge. John is captain of the charter boat Full Moon Too. He looked like he could sail the Queen Mary to England with one arm tied behind his back. Taking to heart Mark’s comments on winning the lottery, we shopped for our boat of choice. We started with a 2005, 17-foot Boston Whaler Montauk for $19,900. Our runner-up was a 2013 Sea Hunt Game Fish with twin, four -stroke 150 horsepower Yamaha outboard motors for $79,995. If we won Powerball, the obvious choice was a 2008 model year, 54-foot Viking convertible Sport Fisherman with a cruising speed of 34 knots courtesy of two 1,550-horsepower diesel engines. It featured a master stateroom, two guest staterooms and a salon with a bar, 42-inch LCD TV, teak accents and a killer stereo system. All this for $1.2 million. Dream big, live big.

Animal Whisperer A FEW weeks ago, one of the four Exit Zero mutts, our 14-year-old German shepherd named Rudy, experienced an episode of laryngeal paralysis that made breathing difficult. We took him to Cape May Veterinary Hospital On Petticoat Creek Lane, where Dr. Bob Moffatt and Dr. Bob Panaccio took excellent care of him. After recommending we keep Rudy at the clinic so they could keep an eye on him, Dr. Moffatt showed us where he’d be staying, so that

we could see with our own eyes how comfortable he would be. And after Rudy came home, feeling better, the doctors followed up with phone calls, and even a house visit, to make sure all was well. In short, we love Cape May Veterinary Hospital (just like we love Hienkel Electric because of the same super-high level of customer service and quality work, but we digress). Every time we bring our animals here, we leave impressed, and so do all of the other clients with whom we’ve spoken. And now comes another

reason to love this place — Dr. Nancy Reilly has joined the team, and she’s a woman who’s bursting with good vibes and great energy. We sat down with Nancy — world traveler, new mom, and lover of all things Cape May — shortly after her first official day on the job... “It’s such a wonderful practice,” she told us. “I feel so fortunate. The doctos and technicians are unbelievable. Of course, you’re in it for the animals, but doing this job, you make many human connections as well, and the people in Cape May are exceptional, and just so welcoming.” Nancy grew up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvana, where she decided at a young age to become a doctor of veterinary medicine. “But I really struggled with chemistry in high school,” she said. “My dad, a retired physician, was my tutor, and he didn’t mince words. He said, ‘There’s no way you’re going to get into vet school, so you need to think of a plan B’.” So, Nancy heeded his advice and attended Villanova University,

where she studied business with a minor in French, before starting a job in marketing and promotions with the Turner Broadcasting Network in Atlanta But no matter how much she enjoyed her work, something still tugged Nancy back to animals. So, to the dismay of her parents, she enrolled in West Chester University, where she spent two-and-ahalf years putting herself through the pre-requisite classes before finally attending the University of Pennsylvania’s four-year veterinary school. “To this day,” she said, “I have a difficult time sitting still, and I’m pretty sure it’s because I spent so many years studying in a library.” In a library, and on Native American reservations, as part of a program called RAS, or Remote Animal Veterinary Service. Nancy was one of the student volunteers who traveled west to California or South Dakota, working in spay/ neuter clinics she’d help set up in

After graduation, Nancy continued honing her surgery skills at Hodis Vet Group in New York City and at Shore Vets in Seaville. “I’ve seen a lot of crazy things,” she said. “Dogs with sticks stuck to the roofs of their mouths, dogs who’ve gotten into illicit drugs, and dogs who’ve eaten eyeglasses and baby bottle nipples and underwear... they always eat underwear.” Now, Nancy is excited for the next phase of her career, one she must balance with family life. “I met my husband, Billy Matthews, who was born and raised in Cape May, in the Brown Room during my last year of veterinary school,” she told us. “He was shivering with a sunburn, I recommended he take an Advil, and the rest is history. I always thought I’d end up with another vet; we could come home and talk

about our cases. But Billy never even had pets growing up!” Now, Nancy and Billy are bringing up two adopted sons, 20-month-old Luke and 16-month-old Kyle. And a mutt called Phoebe and the “one-eyed wonder” cat called Ralphie. Still, the busy couple find time to travel, oftentimes to wherever the Olympics are being held, as Billy works as a sports producer for NBC. “I try my best to tag along,” Nancy said. “I don’t care if he’s working, I just love seeing new places. I’ll climb the Great Wall of China by myself!” But, no matter where they go, it’s coming home that is, oftentimes, most exciting. “Going new places makes us realize just how beautiful it is here,” Nancy said. “We love these beaches, but I also love strolling down the promenade with the kids, or taking Phoebe for a quick run, a 30-minute zen moment, along the bike path. To be living here and working for this practice, it all feels too good to be true.”

Marie has captured many awards for her watercolors both locally and at the National level. Natale will also be painting Exit Zero’s color issue covers this year, so look out for those. In Gallery Two, SOMA presents “The Plentiful Palette” by Leslie Martel, a dedicated student of Marie Natale. Her work embraces the elements of collage, watercolor and acrylic, using intense color, overlaying collage and paint, producing abstractions of the obvious things around us. In Gallery Three, Cape May Point artist, Carol King Hood is exhibiting “Kumbayah”, which willl feature 33 oil paintings inspired by the simple lives and history of the nuns

Hood, an admirer of plein air painting, uses this technique and her own signature style of brilliant colors and strong painterly brush stokes to capture the everyday life of the residing nuns who roam the retreat’s premises and nearby surroundings. Her exhibit will also explore the history of the Sisters before and after Vatican II; the shedding of the Habit for more contemporary clothing. The title, “Kumbayah” symbolizes social change through peaceful means, which is the

work/mission of the Sister’s today. The exhibit will be on view at SOMA Gallery from May 11 to June 9. The Opening Artist Reception will be held on May 11 from 6pm to 9pm. FEW details from the party Will Knapp (Ding!) and I played at the Ferry terminal a few weeks back. It was the 90th birthday party for Henry Buchianico (thrown by Janet, his “wonderful daughter”— her words, I can only tell you that she was indeed spectacularly nice, made sure the band was comfortable and fed, and threw in a few extra bucks at the end) attended by family and close friends. They say you can tell a lot about a man by the friends he keeps, so Henry must be a good guy. It was a nice group. Good looking, too. Janet wanted to be sure to thank Patti’s Party World for the centerpieces, Dianne Salfi for planning the event and Carol Herforth from Island Grill who catered (delish). Also to ReEtta Peterson, Mikey Alimo and Aleks Yakovsmirnoff (In Soviet Russia, picture takes you!) for taking photos, and Cape May Bakers for the cake, which Janet says me and Will were the icing to. Nice, huh? So it’s May now which is almost June which is almost Terry O’ke time at Congress

We’ll be firing up the Kiddy O’ke-Terry O’ke double-dip on Thursday June 27 (Kids show 5:30-8pm, adult show 9-12pm, clothing optional) with Kiddy O’ke 2 kicking off that Sunday (6:30-9pm) and every Thursday and Sunday after into September. If you’ve been you know what a hoot the kids’ shows are. If you haven’t been then you need to because they’re a real hoot. (Somebody step on an owl? Ba-dum-PISH!) Following Kiddy O’ke on Sundays will be Mike Dempsey’s 80’s open mic/ live band karaoke show. Now, before you go screaming, “Copycat! How DARE you try and imitate the success of Terry’s super-terrificawesome Beatles Nights I’m so offended!”

just relax. This show was put together by me, Mike and Myra Vassian, super-cool entertainment director at Congress Hall, and goes forward with my blessing. Because that means so much. But my point is this; It’s going to be a great show with a killer band and it’d be great if you people, MY people, showed it some love. Not too much love. There’s laws against that. Mike Dempsey is also the drummer for local dance combo Stellar Mojo, who will be appearing quite often at Cabanas this season. Mike is a great guy who occasionally sits in at my open mic nights with Bill Caterini (I think Bill has merited his own sound effect by now… Bloop?) and if you follow him on Facebook you know he enjoys two things; drumming and eating. In that order. Stellar Mojo also features John King, with whom I used to toil at Elaine’s Dinner Theater, and Jon Katity, who a few years back was my biggest fan and came to karaoke all the time and read my book and was all “Gosh, Mr. O’Brien, you sure are cool!” and now won’t return my calls. Christine may be a great singer, and she may be very pretty, and she may be super-nice, but she’ll never be… uh… where was I going with this? My lovely wife Cathrine has asked that I pass along her thanks to Exit Zero and Accent on Beauty for her amazing birthday gift of spa and hair treatments. (Funny, she didn’t thank the guy who gave it to her…) The gang at AOB was very welcoming and they made her feel like a part of the family. (Funny, the guy that gave it to her is part of the family…) She is looking forward to her next visit in a few weeks. And so am I. She comes home all relaxed and calm and easy. I popped into the big Exit Zero Color Issue launch party at Ye Olde EZ Global HQ last Wednesday and had myself a time. There was beer and pizza and beer and cheese and beer and sushi. There was also beer. Which I’m fond of. Beer. The EZ color issue is quite the thing of beauty and a great read, despite the fact that I contributed nothing to this one. Or because I contributed nothing to this one. Anyway, it was nice to

chat with some readers who all approach me like we’ve been best friends since high schoo. Then I have to embarrassingly ask, “I’m sorry, who are you?” Which, come to think of it, I have to do at most of my high school reunions so maybe it’s not that embarrassing. I guess it’s a good thing that people feel like they know me so well from reading this silly little column. A good thing. And midlly creepy. Caught up with Victor Grasso. We had a conversation about our favorite comic book artists. He likes Jim Lee from the 90s “Golden Age,” while I lean towards George Perez and Bill Scienckeweicz from the 80s “Silver Age.” And we both agreed that John Byrne is a legend. Yes, we are nerds. But handsome nerds. And Victor didn’t even have any squids on him. I also got more than a few compliments on my appearance. Having come from a long day of zombie make-up training on Ghost Ship I’m not sure what that says about the “Before” me, but the “After” me was pretty pleased to hear how skinny everyone thought he looked. Again, not a great reflection on “Before” me, because I’m still pretty honking fat… Speaking of Ghost Ship, we are now officially open for the season! And I can’t go a week without mentioning The Wild Times, which launches in three &%$#@ing weeks. The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

HO knew the end of times would come in the form of a colossal swarm of cicadas? My money was on zombies, or aliens, or Yankees; possibly even alien Yankee zombies. But cicadas? How undignified. How silly. How noisy. The problem — as you will all know by now — is that after a 17-year absence, we are to be plagued by as many as 300 billion of them within the city boundary alone. And, say experts, once they have consumed all vegetable matter, they will soon turn to small animals, then cats and dogs, Wildwooders, up the evolutionary chain to monkeys and finally to homo sapiens. I remember the last time this happened: we lured the devilish insects to South Cape May (using clever signs that promised “all you can eat buffets for insects”) and then sunk that part of town forever using a small nuclear device some holidaying boffins from The Manhattan Project left behind in The Brown Room one drunken night. It was perhaps harsh, but

the only way to be sure. And of course we used a similar ruse on a number of previous visits (cicadas are not so smart): that “Cicada Summer Ball” at the Admiral Hotel? The “Dusk Cruise” on the Concrete Ship? They all ended with strategically placed demolition charges and victory for humankind. This time, though, we will need to be extra-cunning, as we have plain and simple run out of buildings/parts of town to dynamite, and also the government removed my entire stock of thermonuclear devices

last year, on the f limsy pretext that the Cold War was over and my deterrent was no longer needed. I did warn them that it’s only a matter of time before the U.N. tanks roll into America, but did they listen? No they did not. So this time, dear friends, we need to rely not on the cleansing fire of the atom, but on Mother Nature herself, in the shape of cicada-killing wasps: I have ordered in some 50,000, and will release them when the first swarm appears. And what, you ask, of the wasps afterward? Well, fierce shrikes will consume them in no time. And for the shrikes, genetically engineered hawks, of course. And once those deadly raptors have eaten their full? A troupe of 300-lb baboons, whose agility is matched only by their savagery. And once they are done? Why, we employ them in local restaurants and cafés, where their blend of ferocity when challenged and lack of interest in customer needs can only be a refreshing change. What could possibly go wrong? (Just in case, I have some Tibetan War Elephants on order…ssshhhh).

he Coastal Research Center at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey (CRC) initiated a post-storm survey and assessment of the New Jersey shoreline in response to Hurricane Sandy, which made landfall in Atlantic County on October 29, 2012. CRC has monitored shoreline trends for over 25 years at 105 locations for the New Jersey Beach Profile Network (NJBPN). Kimberly McKenna is a Project Geologist for the Richard Stockton College, CRC. Like many who work at CRC, Kim is a graduate of Stockton. She earned an MS degree at the University of South Florida. Her current research involves post-storm assessments, beach access and erosion-response planning. McKenna’s talk highlights the impacts of Hurricane Sandy on beaches in Cape May County.

Lower Cape May Regional’s Nikki Ferrante is an outstanding artist and student. The daughter of Gretchen and Ted, Nikki said, “My family has always valued creativity, and fostered it in me since I was young.” Nikki has been taking art classes her entire life and says she has also been greatly influenced by her brother Chris, a graphic design major at Rowan University. Here’s To Your Health

EAD anything these days about health and fitness, and you know that cleansing is all the rage. Because, you know, as the stories tell, our bodies are chock full of toxins and poisons and metals and other unmentionables. There is The Master Cleanse; consisting of Cayenne pepper, lemon juice, water and pure maple syrup. The GM diet cleanse; which lasts seven days and restricts you to 10 glasses of water daily along with different combinations of fruit or vegetables, beef and a special cabbage soup. There is the Hollywood Cleanse (of course), which entails a 48-hour period where you consume a “special” drink. And most of them promise quick weight loss like the Martha’s Vineyard Diet... “Lose 21 pounds in 21 days”! I’ve seen people who are undoubtedly walking toxic dumps from eating at toxic dumps, like fast food chains, but is the average person really that loaded with foreign substances and do any of these cleanses even work? My thinking changed from pro to very skeptical after trying the above mentioned cayenne, lemon, maple syrup cleanse. Now

I know some of you cleanse experts can go weeks on seaweed sticks and water but I was starving and hallucinating after 12 hours. I kid. It took 24. I’m used to depriving myself of food from years as a wrestler, where losing 10 pounds in two days to make weight was common. We would gorge ourselves on candy bars and honey right after weigh-ins, wrestle a match, go home and eat, only to start the process again for the next match. Insanity. But this is what the industry built up around cleansing depends on. Most religions have used, and still incorporate, some sort of Fasting as a spiritual practice, especially during certain times of

But spiritual practices designed to increase clarity or attain insights as opposed to deprivation to lose weight, are vastly different. Now, there are foods that have been shown to help with moving things along, shall we say, such as prunes (hate prunes), and fibrous foods like broccoli and kale. This is one of the most effective ways the body accumulates and then removes waste products. Seaweed, because of its high levels of sodium alginate and iodine, has been shown to remove radiation from the body. Much has been written about Chlorella as a natural cleanser as well. The first line of defense is simple. Don’t smoke or do drugs and limit your intake of red meat and sugar and booze. Eat fiber-rich foods. Drink water. Research any and all claims made by companies about their breakthrough products or the newest fad your crazy cousin Rebecca is raving about. If something works, there should be easily verifiable double-blind studies done by reputable scientists online. And quit starving yourself. It doesn’t work.

This week, Dottie Knapp, Cape May Film Society President, and daughter Maria Knapp, review “The Parent Trap”

ITH Mother’s Day coming up, it seemed natural to feature a mother/ daughter discussion about the movies. Luckily my daughter, Maria, loves movies as much as I do. So we thought it would be fun to offer two vantage points of one of our perennial parental films: The Parent Trap. Mom (Dottie): I love the original version of The Parent Trap (1961) more than its remake in 1998. I can play almost every scene of the original in my head — not so with the remake. I remember being so impressed with Haley Mills working two accents. I still tear up when the California twin crawls up into her Boston grandfather’s lap to sniff him and “make a memory.” How many of us wish we could go back and do that to Mom Moms and Grand-dads. Maureen O’Hara truly demonstrated her range playing a demure Bostonian. Her last acclaimed role in an Oscar-worthy film was nine years earlier when she went toe-totoe with John Wayne in The Quiet Man (1952).

Who pulled “The Parent Trap’s” starring role off better? Depends on who you speak to... Of course the true O’Hara comes out when she gives Brian Keith a black eye. And, wow, when Keith reaches up to help O’Hara off a ladder, it still makes my heart go thump. Daughter (Maria): The original Parent Trap is a great movie, but the remake is just as good and a lot easier for the current generation to appreciate. The twins are played by Lindsay Lohan in her first movie role (oh, the promise she showed as an actress) and they’re separated by a continent, not just a

country. Natasha Richardson doesn’t play a socialite. She is a career woman. For those of you moms (like mine) who prefer the original, this movie absolutely pays homage to the 1961 film. All the memorable lines are kept, but I love the added comic relief with the addition of a butler (Simon Kutz) and a housekeeper (the hysterical Lisa Walters). The mother of the gold digger is played by Joanne Barnes, who played the gold digger in the original. Brian Keith is very nice, but give me Dennis Quaid’s smile any day. Mom, we need to sit down and watch this version again. So we clearly differ on some remakes, but we are agreed on a few — such as the 1995 Pride and Prejudice BBC version starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. On May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially designated the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Jarvis later objected to the commercialization of the holiday and even crashed a confectionery convention in 1923 to protest the hype, but flowers, candy, and greeting cards became Mother’s Day staples. Legend has it that an association of grateful florists paid for Jarvis’ living expenses when she grew old, without her knowledge. The average American will spend about $150 on Mother’s Day, but most of the things your mother will appreciate involve spending more time than money. Call or visit! She wants to hear from each child and grandchild. See if there’s a chore you can do for her – stock up on heavy canned goods from the supermarket, set up the bills to be paid
