Talk Of The Town

RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS

Stop The Madness! VERY sad to hear about the kerfuffle on Jackson at Beach Avenue on Monday. A couple local kids/punks had a go at a tourist over, bizarrely, the purchase of a beach ball. Soon, a few more tourists got involved, ending with the local kids/punks shouting, “Go the f*** home!” Time to wake up and smell the coffee, kids/punks. A Cape May without tourism would not be a city you would like to grow up in. And really... tourist-baiting is just about the least coolest activity you could ever be involved with.

Go, Bob!

Cape May’s summer season was launched with a performance by Peter Nero and the Philly Pops Saturday

Top Of The Pops

ALL it lacked was real cannons. The booms during the “1812 Overture” were recorded but otherwise Peter Nero and the Philly Pops put on a bang-up show May 25 at Convention Hall. It was a big start to Cape May’s Memorial Day weekend. A 60-piece orchestra in an intimate setting can’t help but wow an audience. The set list for the night was patriotic songs combined with Broadway, movie and television pieces, something that showcased Nero’s decades-long musical career. The veteran composer kept the atmosphere light, having the orchestra rise from their chairs to do a wave while playing a medley from the PBS television series

Victory at Sea. “Anybody get wet?” he asked. Councilwoman Terri Swain rose from her chair to offer the evening’s first standing ovation at the conclusion of the medley. For those seated on the main floor, as nightfall crept into the city a waning azure sky served as backdrop through the windows of the rear wall of the stage. Those who ventured out on to Convention Hall’s beachside deck at intermission were treated to a view of a mustard-colored moon suspended over the ocean. Nero spent much of the evening leading the orchestra but when he sat down at the Steinway, he delivered an amazing jazz performance from the score of West Side Story. While he has been playing

with orchestras for 52 years, he noted the Philly Pops “could play everything.” That included the theme from the Sylvester Stallone Rocky movie which has become the unofficial anthem for the Pops’ home, the City of Brotherly Love. A crowd-pleaser was a singalong of “On the Way to Cape May,” a song Nero said he worked up an arrangement of two days before the concert. Local business folks Joe Bogle and Susan Tischler were the first to stand during the playing of “God Bless America.” The audience followed their lead. “I’d like to come back again when it’s summertime,” Nero told the audience on a 62-degree night with a stiff breeze.

Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Pat Healy of North Cape May, NJ. How long have you been coming to Cape May? I’ve lived here for 15 years, but I’ve been coming here for much longer. What do you like about it? I’ve always loved Cape May. It’s just an enjoyable place to be. And, to be clear, I like West Cape May just as much. What’s your favorite place? This is a tough one... but the Washington Inn is number one. Least favorite thing about Cape May? Parking is always a problem, but other than that, I can’t think of a thing! What is your favorite restaurant? I like the Washington Inn and Hemingway’s. And your favorite store? I can’t seem to remember the name... it’s a little shop on the corner of the mall. What do you like about Exit Zero? I think they put a lot of time and effort into putting it together. I like to read the stories they run, and the interviews with different people... I can’t believe I’m one of them! What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? There’s really nothing I don’t like about it. But if I didn’t like something, I’d be the first one to call Jason and let him know! What’s your T-shirt size? Extra Large. Want to join our army of subscribers — there are hundreds of them in nearly 30 states! Call us on 609-770-8479 or buy one online at ezstore.us. Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 The Philly Pops were joined by eight vocalists known as Voices of the People. They offered “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” a big favorite with the largely senior citizen audience. The best-dressed folks in Convention Hall were members of the orchestra — the men wore black tuxedos and red bow ties and the woman were in long black dresses or slacks. Convention Hall audiences have shown a preference for seashore-chic outfits and business casual attire. The fact the building is on the beach apparently is not lost on concert attendees. The concert closed with the “Liberty Bell March,” also known as the theme song for Monty Python, a fact not lost on Britishborn city resident Peter Cole. He said he liked the classics but is headed to see another classic, Paul McCartney, in concert in Brooklyn. A pre-concert reception

scheduled for the back deck of the hall was moved indoors due to the chilly temperature. Folks milled about in Convention Hall’s lobby with conversation centering on Cape May’s summer tourist season. “It feels like it’s going to be an amazing summer,” said Curtis Bashaw, Cape Resorts’ managing partner. He acknowledged some believe all of New Jersey was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy while in reality only about 15 percent of the state was hit hard. Bashaw said he was not bothered by television ads on Philly stations for resort towns in other states. He said the word was filtering out that South Jersey is okay. Mission Inn co-owner Ray Roberts, dressed in a tropicalweight suit, said bookings for his New Jersey Avenue bed and breakfast inn, The Mission, were ahead of last year, which was the best season in its history. County Freeholder Will Morey said Hurricane Sandy was a “giant dynamic” but the situation was sorting itself out.

“Even this week we received calls at Morey’s Piers about concerns for the rides,” he said. “And they are from people who live relatively close, within an hour or two drive.” Earlier in the day, foot traffic on the Wildwood boardwalk had been strong, he said. “The New Jersey Shore, if it wasn’t known before, it is becoming known throughout the world unfortunately because of Hurricane Sandy,” said Morey. He predicted a positive tourist season but not a wave of new visitors due to damage in shore towns to the north of Cape May County. Mayor Ed Mahaney said he was expecting a banner tourist season if the weather cooperated. He said beach tags sales and rental house reservations were strong. This summer marks Nero’s final year with the Philly Pops. His severance agreement permits him to do three concerts per year, one in Trenton, one at Independence Hall, and one in Cape May.

While there were empty seats last year for Nero’s concert which officially opened Convention Hall, this year’s concert was reportedly a sell-out. A number of businesses participated in underwriting the cost of hiring Nero and the orchestra. From the look on the faces of concert-goers as they left the hall, Memorial Day 2014 will find Nero and his orchestra once again headed south on the way to Cape May.

Death Race 2013

YOU would never know it, but Ilir Elezaj is functioning on four hours of sleep. This is the norm for a general manager launching his family’s beachfront hotel, the Ocean Club, entering its third season, while honoring a strict,

Thursday, May 30, 2013 25-hour per week training regimen to prepare for the 2013 Spartan Death Race, a 40-miler coined as The Ultimate Challenge. “This race will be like no other,’ said Ilir. “You don’t know when it starts, and they don’t tell you when it ends. It’s more mental than physical. Your mind tells your body to quit, and you have to reroute the response — convince your body it’s capable.” Created for endorphin-hungry overachievers or ultra-endurance athletes, they are known in the obstacle-race circuit, the Death Race, which takes place on June 21 in Pittsfield, VT, requires a special breed of competitors to complete 15-20 challenges over a 40-mile course in the woods. It lasts for at least 48 hours. Even the website sounds very intimidating — youmaydie.com. “There is going to be weighted, uphill hikes; crawls under barbed wire; water challenges; mountain climbs where you have to figure out a riddle or solve a puzzle — this is all while

being sleep deprived,” said Ilir. Just as the delirious effects of nonsleep fuel his quest during a race, Memorial Day serves as a springboard for a successful summer season in the Cape May hotel industry. Ilir balances his responsibilities as GM at Ocean Club with endurance-specific training, which forces him to put forth maximum effort in minimal time. “I spend a lot of time at Cape May Fitness Center. My training consists of many different strength and conditioning exercises. I mainly do circuits — highintensity workouts for short periods of time nonstop. I try to run about 20-30 miles a week and increase my effort by carrying a heavy backpack or anything I can find.” Ilir ran track and cross country and wrestled when he was younger but only recently turned to decathlons and triathlons. “I competed in sports since I was young. Coming out of college I wanted to feel that competitive edge again — that amazing feel-

ing you get when you know it’s all on you.” June 1 marks the anniversary of Ilir’s first Spartan Sprint. Since that day, he has competed in 14 other Spartan races and ended up finishing 68th out of about 133,000 in the world and 13th in his age group (25–29 years). In under a year, Ilir has completed 20 races/challenges, each different from the last, totaling 200 miles — a distance exceeding the length of the state of New Jersey. He trains in all elements, nurses his injuries, and keeps on going, building his network of brothers and sisters. Sammy Mui, director of marketing for Body Armor in the NYC/NJ area, took an interest and now sponsors him on his journey to the Death Race. Embracing the pain with open arms is one tactic that Ilir uses to mentally prepare for a challenge like the Death Race. Another is keeping a positive attitude and having a solid sup-

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 port system. “If you train your mind before you encounter the thought of giving up, it is 1000 times easier to trust that your body won’t give out,” he said. This optimism can be attributed to Ilir’s friendship with Young Sun Moon, founder of Numinous Health Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Boutique in NYC. He helps Ilir get in the mindset before each race. “She has become a pillar in my life and supports me 100% in what I do. She is crewing for me at the Death Race. This means she will be feeding me; helping me change; and most of all, morally supporting me as I complete each challenge. She plays a key role in my quest to survive.” As you would expect, the undertow of emotions leading up to an event like Death Race peak and swell, like a heart rate pulsing with anticipation... but Ilir says

he is prepared to endure the worst and outlast the best. Good luck Ilir... we hope you won’t need it.

Unwelcome News

THE Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May is unhappy with city council. As reported in our recent City Hall column, the chamber had gone to the city asking for $25,00 to help them run the Welcome Center. That plea, however, has apparently fallen on deaf ears. At a recent council meeting, City Manager Bruce MacLeod appeared to rule out the idea and attempts by the chamber to discuss the matter since then have been ignored, says chamber President John Cooke. “In spite of repeated attempts to work with the City of Cape May, to seek their support with the Welcome Center, the Chamber of Commerce has had no response from the city. To date, we have not had any official communication from any member of

city council, the City Manager or the Mayor. The appearance of ignoring the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May is disappointing to us as an organization,” he said. “As the official voice of business in Cape May, the chamber understands the necessity of staffing the Welcome Center. Increasing the hours with qualified Visitor Relations personnel is not only the right thing to do; it benefits the City of Cape May, its residents, its visitors and the business community, and its members.” In the meantime, the chamber is determined to keep the Welcome Center open every day, effective June 1, from 9:00am to 5:00pm. They will be staffing the center with one Visitor Relations Specialist each day but are looking for volunteers to help during the busy 10am-2pm period. If you are interested in volunteering, contact the Welcome Center at 609-884-9562.

AND now... some shameless self-promotion. Last weekend saw two new launches from our very busy (read: out-ofour-minds-run-ragged busy) little organization. First of all, we opened a second Exit Zero store on the beachfront — at 316 Beach Avenue. Thanks to the Hirsch family for being such accommodating landlords. And we also launched the exciting new [artBOX] complex on Adventure Pier, on Wildwood boardwalk, in conjunction with Morey’s Piers. This cool new concept features the Exit Zero Museum Shop, which sells a cool range of maritime and Wildwood-themed merchandise, along with work from five regional artists (whose studios, like our store, are located in recycled metal shipping containers). There is also Cafe 4B, which features superb sushi from the folks at Toykyo in Rio Grande. Come see us — [artBOX] is open daily from 3pm to 11pm.

A Year Of Drama And Intrigue At East Lynne

T

From world premieres to Sherlock Holmes favorites, a mixed bag of theatrical goodies

HE award-winning Equity professional East Lynne Theater Company has exciting shows lined up for its thirtythird season. It includes the usual world premiere (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow), a New Jersey premiere (Lost on the Natchez Trace), a comedy by a Pulitzer Prizewinning playwright (The Late Christopher Bean), an American detective joins Holmes in our popular radio-style productions (Holmes and Carter Mysteries) and their storytelling holiday show (Christmas with Harte and O. Henry). From June 12 to July 20 at 8:30pm, the spotlight is on the New Jersey premiere of Lost on the Natchez Trace. Slave auctioneer Malcolm Jeters is headed home when he falls from his mule during a violent storm. Injured and starving, he yells for help. The only one who appears is a runaway slave. The question in this compelling new play is who will save whom? Written by Jan Buttram, co-founder and artistic director of Abingdon Theatre Company in NYC, the play was first produced

The remarkable play, Lost on the Natchez Trace, is coming to East Lynne on June 12 at Abingdon in 2012. After seeing it, ELTC’s artistic director, Gayle Stahlhuth, asked Jan if she would like to make further changes to the script, including adding a third person to the cast, and have another theatrical run, directed by Stahlhuth. Buttram jumped at the

opportunity. Tom Byrn, who was in last season’s It Pays to Advertise and other ELTC productions, is playing the slave trader. New to ELTC is Leon Morgan, portraying the runaway slave.

Page 24 East Lynne Theater ? From Page 23 Recently, he was in Gym Shorts at 777 Theatre in NYC. Stephanie Garrett, one of ELTC’s storytellers for Tales of the Victorians, who was in ELTC’s Christmas in Black and White, portrays a woman who inhabits the Natchez Trace. On Tuesday, July 2 at 8:00pm, it’s ELTC’s popular admission-free student production, An Evening of Fables. After nine rehearsals, students ages 10-15 take to the stage in an entertaining event for all ages. Students interested in being part of the workshop, contact ELTC for applications. Next up is the world premiere, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow from July 24 to August 31 at 8:30pm. The townsfolk believe that the headless body of a Hessian soldier astride his horse haunts their isolated village. When Ichabod Crane suddenly disappears, is it the fault of the Headless Horseman, or something else? Washington Irving’s supernatural story is adapted by James Rana who so vividly created ELTC’s last season’s The Poe Mysteries. Also like “Poe,” this production, with its cast of six, under the direction of Gayle Stahlhuth, travels up to Ocean Professional Theatre Company in Barnegat, NJ in late October.

Thursday, May 30, 2013 In the role of Ichabod Crane is Matt Luceno, who was in ELTC’s It Pays to Advertise. Recently he was in Chemistry of Love at La Mama in NYC. Then it’s the delightful comedy The Late Christopher Bean, running from September 18 to October 13, a 1932 Broadway sensation by Pulitzer Prize-winner Sidney Howard. After his death, Christopher Bean is heralded as a great artist, and the art world now wants his work. But did a New England family destroy his paintings, misplace them, or hide them? “It’s a play that has remained fresh and funny, proving once again that a strong script is rarely tarnished by time,” wrote Ken Jaworowski in his New York Times review of The Actors Company Theater’s production in 2009. The cast is a blend of ELTC favorites and new performers. Actors who’ve appeared with ELTC before include Ken Glickfeld , Mark Edward Lang, and Maria Silverman. New to ELTC are Jennifer Bissell, recently in Mame at Media Theatre in Pennsylvania, Seth James, who performs with the American Globe Theatre in NYC, Francesca Mondelli, who works with WARP Theatre in Seattle, Bradley Mott, a regular performer at Steppenwolf and the Goodman Theatre, and Michelle Tomko who’s worked at The Cleveland Playhouse and

Actors Theatre of Louisville. On November 1 and 2, it’s Holmes and Carter Mysteries, ELTC’s popular vintage-radio style production, complete with live sound effects and commercials, featuring Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Copper Beeches about a governess in peril, and Nick Carter and the Strange Dr. Devolo, in which Manhattan millionaires are missing. For the holidays, from November 29 to December 14, with 8:00pm and 2:00pmcurtain times, it’s Christmas with Harte and O. Henry. Based on tales from the Old West written by Bret Harte and O. Henry, they are brought beautifully to life in storytelling fashion by ELTC’s artistic director, Gayle Stahlhuth. As in her other holiday shows, she portrays thirtyplus characters. Along with the mainstage productions, ELTC is proud to offer its Sunday Film Series, co-sponsored with The Cape May Film Society. On June 30 at 8:30pm, to accompany ELTC’s mainstage production of Lost on the Natchez Trace and commemorate the 150th Anniversary of America’s Emancipation Proclamation, is the 2006 film Amazing Grace, about William Wilberforce’s battle to abolish slavery in England in the late 1700s. Exit Zero Goes On Vacation

«

Katie Causey, who was raised in Cape May, recently said “yes” to her boyfriend of eight years, an Englishman named Kevin Harry Monk. Kevin had intended to pop the question at the top of the Eiffel Tower during a trip to Paris the couple had taken with Katie’s parents, Sue Causey and her husband Bill, parking angel veteran and owner of Antique Doorknob on Park Boulevard. Rain, which stopped some of the electric lifts to the top of the Tower from working, hindered Kevin’s plans. Fortunately, the moment struck him the following day, during a visit to the Notre Dame Cathedral... but not before asking Bill’s permission first. “I had tears in my eyes, and I was just a little shaky!” Bill said. “He’s a great guy. And Katie did say ‘yes.’ Actually, she said, ‘Kevin Harry Monk, is this for real?!’” The wedding will be in Cape May, at the Chalfonte Hotel, next May. Congrats, all!

The Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s weekly column... it’s about nothing and everything, all at the same time

S I write this (11:29am, Thursday May 23) it is 20 years, almost to the moment, since I pulled up to Elaine’s Dinner Theater for my summer job as an actor/waiter. Little did I know that two decades later I would be the “huge, iconic person” (quote source: me in the Philadelphia Inquirer) I am today. And, while I’m a little disappointed there wasn’t a ticker tape parade celebrating this fact, I proudly present… Twenty Years of Terry O’Brien in Cape May: A retrospective. On May 22, 1993 I walked off the stage at Three Little Bakers dinner theater in Delaware, packed up my meager belongings, then headed south with my girlfriend (her name escapes me… starts with a “B”, rhymes with “rich”) to embark on my life as a nomadic actor, going town-to-town, wherever the next job took me, with only the road and endless possibilities before me… On May 23 I watched the show at Elaine’s, Drop Dead Twice, and immediately ceased those nomadic plans; I was hooked. While it took a few years to know what I was

doing, Elaine’s was the perfect job for me, a relatively sharp, reasonably handsome guy with a decent sense of humor, raised as I was on Monty Python, Benny Hill and Bugs Bunny. It was the perfect marriage of my talent (ability to memorize lines real fast) and sensibility (absurdist). There has been much muddied water under that bridge, but 20 years is too long to hold a grudge, and so I offer an olive branch to Elaine’s owner Shirley Phinney as I start on my next 20. Perhaps the fates will conspire to bring us together again. If not, I will always look back with fondness on my days sharing the stage with the likes of Parker Smith, Holly Knapp (nee Birch), Dosie Clausen, Mike Masiko,

Cathrine Fiorentino (more on her later) and He Who Shall Not Be Named. It was Elaine’s that brought me here, kept me here, and helped me find the life I was so lacking prior. That first night our concierge, Jamie Cherry, took us to the Ugly Mug for drinks and actorly bullshit. On stage was a great threepiece band, Southwind. It was their “singalong-with-the-band” night so I hopped up and promptly forget half the words to “Tempted” by Squeeze. But this began a long and fruitful relationship as, two years later, upon the departure of world-class vocalist Rose Kelly, I stepped in as front man. For five years it was my privilege to share the stage with Ed Dobbs and Tim Joyce. They remain my friends. In 1995 or so I experienced my first midlife crisis. I was writing and directing at a very successful dinner theater and fronting a hugely popular band. Is this as good as it gets? I thought it was until a pretty brunette walked into Elaine’s for an audition. Her name was Cathrine from Philadelphia. And

The Undertow ? From Page 41 I was floored. What followed was a dogged pursuit, completed only when I had made myself worthy to be her companion. While I still struggle to remain so, she has stuck by me. She also gifted me with three beautiful sons, Owen, Jackson and Henry. The words do not exist to express what they mean to me, so I won’t even try. In 1996, after a summer at the Shipwreck Saloon (now Cabanas), Southwind migrated south to the Rusty Nail. We worked under Jule Hober and I still tell the story of how he got me so drunk in 15 minutes between sets one night that I couldn’t finish the gig, though I tried. Luckily cell phone technology was still primitive so no one could record the single worst performance of “New York State of Mind” in human history. I still have trouble at the smell of bananas, Jule. In 1999 I parted ways with Elaine’s (unvoluntary), followed soon by my departure from Southwind (voluntary) and settled into a quiet life of waitering (Henry’s on the Beach), carpentering (with Jay Bethel) and the occasional open mic night. This quiet life lasted a year before I got drawn back on stage with Tom Cupp’s FineLife Productions, starting as a one-showa-week understudy, eventually directing around 10 shows. This also begat a number of friendships — Tom (with whom I spent many, many hours laughing my ass off trading Monty Python quips), Heather and Roger Furlin, Betty Dallas and Rosemary Benson. These were good days. In 2000 I formed The O’Brien Bros. Band with my brother Mike. After five years with Southwind I vowed to never again play “Margaritaville” or “Brown-Eyed Girl” unless a gun was to my head. I understand the need to play those songs as a Cape May bar band. I also positively refused to do it. We were going to play songs WE wanted to hear, and if the crowd liked them, so much the better. (Turns out they did, and The O’Bros. had a nice run at the Ugly Mug.)

In 2002 I returned to Elaine’s for a second term and, a little older and wiser, enjoyed myself at least as much if not more than my first go-round. It was at this time I noticed a cool little fledgling paper making its way across town called Exit Zero. How clever! So I invited them in to review our show. They made reservations for eight, we cooked food for 10… and two showed up. A furry Scottish guy and his tall Polish friend (Jack Wright, Maciej Nabrdalik). It was just another in a series of fortuitous meetings that led to great things. Since that meeting I’ve written around 500 columns and 18 short stories. As I’ve said to everyone since coming aboard this magazine — I’ve written my whole life, but I didn’t become a writer until I got a deadline. Then, in 2005, I found myself neither acting nor singing for a living, so I went out and bought myself a karaoke machine, came up with the name Terry O’ke, and eight years later remain the handsomest karaoke host on the planet. (At least my mom says I am.) From Terry O’ke has sprung friendships with Rico and Mary Suave, Frank Scott, Sal Riggi, Skip and Bobbie Schwester, and hundreds of others. Mixed in there were a couple of movie jobs, some TV commercials, a TV singing contest. All of which, you can plainly see, has made me rich and famous… In recent years I hooked on with a great company, Morey’s Piers, and run one of the most successful haunts in the country, the Ghost Ship, and have formed the Love Me Dudes and Glass Houses tribute bands. And last week I became editor of an Exit Zero knockoff, The Wild Times. I still vow to get my first short story, “Murder-Oke!”, made into a movie or TV show. Think Dexter meets American Idol. It may become necessary in the coming weeks for Undertow to go on hiatus as I try to pull The Wild Times together, but it won’t be for long. While I have become much more of a Wildwood guy over the last few years, Cape May will always remain dear to me. ’Til next time, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Inside City Hall

DILIGENTLY REPORTING THE GOINGS-ON AT CAPE MAY CITY COUNCIL... BY JACK FICHTER This is also an annual occurrence. Deputy Mayor Bill Murray suggested some of the money be used to replace the sound system in City Hall auditorium which lately has been prone to loud attacks of static emanating from its speakers.

Mall Dispute Settled

WASHINGTON Street Mall renovations were completed in 2008 but one piece of business was not finished. The city held back a $59,500 payment to contractor Bud Concrete. According to City Solicitor Tony Monzo, at issue was defective wood on top of planter boxes around the mall. The city settled by paying $29,763, which accounted for the cost of the city repairing the planters. Mahaney said the settlement would avoid any future litigation.

Under Pressure Mayor Mahaney has promised Convention Hall won’t be a black hole for city taxpayers

City’s $13m Bond Spree IF YOU buy a car or a house, chances are you will finance the deal. Same for the city when it buys a dump truck or fixes a road. At a May 21 meeting, council approved three bond ordinances with a total of $13 million for a major bond sale. The bonds included money for road reconstruction, water and sewer projects from the past five years and $9 million in construction costs for Convention Hall. Council approved three resolutions combining the city’s debt for a bond sale June 26. Mayor Edward J. Mahaney Jr has promised over the past four years the city would not incur more bonded debt from Convention Hall before retiring old debt. He said between the last quarter of 2013 and the first quarter of 2014, the city will retire around $14 million in bonded debt. Council approved a $475,000 bond for the beach utility, which includes improvements to lifeguard headquarters, beach tag office, beach access ramps and walkways, a public address system along the beachfront, a Bobcat tractor and other equipment. The bond included money to get rid of the sore thumb portable

restrooms at the end of Gurney Street. Mahaney promised construction of restrooms on the promenade would begin before the end of summer. Councilman Jack Wichterman said building restrooms in the former Oasis restaurant required an okay from the Department of Environmental Protection. Review procedures for beachfront properties have changed since Hurricane Sandy. A $1 million bond ordinance was approved for improvements to the water and sewer system. Mahaney explained the city does about $1 million of such work each year. Part of the funds go to the continuation of installation of water meters that are read by a radio signal instead of employees treading around the city eyeballing each one. The city has converted 94 percent of the meters to the high-tech format. The bond also covers the cost of new software to control the city’s water system and desalination plant, said Mahaney. The old software has been operating since 1998. Council approved a $1.4 million bond covering various capital improvements including road repairs, replacement of public works equipment, fire and police department gear, and maintaining city buildings and grounds.

RESIDENTS found the water pressure from their spigots alarmingly low and their showers sputtering on the evening of May 17 and called 9-1-1 and other city phone numbers. Mayor Mahaney said the drop in water pressure was the result of a stuck altitude valve at the water tower in the public works yard. Utility Superintendent Carl Behrens and crew made a beeline for the public works yard and resolved the issue within 15 minutes of their arrival. Part of the problem was the result of refilling of the newly painted Madison Avenue water tower. The stuck valve was bypassed and water pressure returned to normal, much to the relief of dishwashers and bathers throughout the city.

Sinkhole Update

IT WASN’T what they expected. A small sinkhole discovered on the promenade in April at Beach Avenue and Ocean Street has been repaired by the city. At first it was believed the sinkhole may have been the result of a leaky outfall pipe into the ocean but a video exam proved the pipe was in excellent condition. Engineer Ray Roberts reported to council on May 7 that fill material between large boulders under the Promenade may have shifted. Voids between the big rocks were filled during excavation. If it reoccurs, Roberts rec-

The Old Fogey

W

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

E HAVE, at last, a solution to the mosquito problem that has plagued our fair city for centuries. It is not, typically, perfect, as solutions go, but it has some strong advantages. And it is all thanks to the top secret Cape May Institute for Dubious Biology laboratory that the government funds deep under Congress Hall (next time you get in an elevator there, look very carefully for the hidden button on the very bottom, that says “-10” but do not push it on any account, as the Institute is always on the lookout for experimental test subjects and the scientists down there tend to view unexpected visitors as ripe for use). The big brains down there have studied the mosquito dynamic and concluded that every year we have a population of around three million of the terrible beasties. And so, with some energetic genetics work, that have determined a way to make all of these three million bugs be in the same place at the same time, tied by a pack mentality

gene grafted from wild wolves. This means a cloud of mosquitoes the size of a small house, and about the same density, which we can all easily see coming by its sheer size and the noise which will be approximately the same as a chainsaw placed in front of a microphone at one of these “death metal” concerts one hears about. The only downside is that for those not observant/nimble/smart enough to avoid the superswarm, there’s the very strong likelihood of losing eight pints of blood in under a second. On the plus side, the

remains — essentially a deflated balloon of skin and hair with a surprised expression — are very easily rolled up and deposited in a trash can. Also, we have calculated that the likely victim will, based on the characteristics of slow-wittedness and lack of physical agility, tend to be out-of-towners, specifically Wildwooders, and the gene pool will be all the stronger as a result. But don’t be thinking that this will make the mosquitoes an easy target, say, for a massed DEET strike, or a large net: we have just discovered that an unexpected side effect of making them a “hive” mind is that they will have an IQ level exceeding that of Steven Hawking, and are therefore not likely to be easily fooled or exterminated. In fact, we just found this out a few minutes after releasing the superswarm, and so it might be best to assume there is a huge, fast, genius-level cloud of killer bloodsuckers out there, just in case they evolve a little and try to eliminate our keenest minds before we strike back… Hold on, who could be knocking at the door at this late hour? I best go check...

Here’s To Your Health

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

U

NLESS you’ve been on a 20-year spelunking vacation you probably have read the name Monsanto and the initials GMO together in a sentence. And it likely came either with a dire warning from an eco-activist or a reassurance from Monsanto about the safety of its genetically modified crops. So, what gives? Foods containing GMOs have been available since 1994 when a company called Calgene started marketing the delayed ripening tomato called Flavr Savr. Since then, soybeans, corn and cotton have been engineered to have characteristics that nature never intended. So, at what cost to our health? Almost 90% of all of these crops are GMO. That’s staggering when you think of how short a time they have been on the market. Monsanto’s website states, “There is no need for, or value in, testing the safety of GM foods in humans.” While one could easily see this as an arrogant position taken by a multi-national it is based on what’s called the Central Dogma of genetics. But according to an article in The Atlantic, the Central Dogma

“…is built on an understanding of genetics circa 1960.” Food testing for thousands of years was done through trial and error. If a little red berry, caused cramping and resulted in death it would soon lose favor with the tribe or group and be taken off hunter-gatherer menus. Obviously we’ve learned better methods for testing potential poisons and carcinogens, which is why it seems odd that a company built on scientific methods, using advanced chemistry and genetics, wouldn’t accept the same scrutiny of their products by independent scientists. Being asked to trust that a tomato infused with a fish gene to slow its ripening

the flying fish studio 130 park blvd west cape may

is safe is asking for a lot of trust. If, indeed, the backlash to GMOs can be proven to be a hysterical over-reaction then wouldn’t presenting the science be the best way to quell it? The GMO issue is a worldwide one and takes on added significance in poorer, agricultural counties like India. Farmers there were sold on the idea of using seeds sold to them by Monsanto and other companies which were supposedly selected and modified for disease resistance and higher productivity. Law suits are pending for the failure of these super seeds and more than 200,000 Indian farmers have committed suicide after GM seed crop failure in the last decade. Essentially, Monsanto and six other large seed companies turned these farmers into indentured servants. How? Modified seeds produce one crop and then that crop produces no useable seeds thereafter, which forced the farmers to continue buying from the large seed companies. The only way around this GMO grip is to buy grass-fed beef, wild-caught salmon and fish, organic grains, breads and vegetables and organic milk. You’ll pay more but you won’t be someone’s experiment.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady, My husband and I stayed in Cape May for the first time over Memorial Day weekend. We had a lovely time and can’t wait to visit again later this summer. However, we had a minor problem with our otherwise wonderful hotel, and my husband and I disagree over how he handled it. The coffeemaker in our room didn’t work. My husband went to the front desk to ask for a replacement, but the clerk was very busy, so he stepped out to buy coffee instead. When he mentioned it at check-out, the clerk responded: “Oh. I’ll let them know.” No apology, which I think he should have demanded, as well as some kind of recompense. What do you think? — Caffeine Free Dear Free, Now that the summer season is upon us, it seems a fitting time to revisit the

concepts of both customer service and customer behavior. The scenario you describe is exactly why managers exist. The Answer Lady cannot think of a single hotel manager in town who would not immediately take whatever steps necessary to rectify a situation such as yours. If there is a coffeemaker in one’s room, one has every right to expect it to function properly. A replacement request, unlike some requests those in the service industry no doubt encounter on a daily basis, is perfectly reasonable. Your

The Movie Column

T

This week, Cape May Film Society President Dottie Knapp reviews “The Company You Keep”

HE film The Company You Keep is about a present-day lawyer (Robert Redford) who was part of a radical anti-war group in the 1970s. Back then, the radicals killed a bank guard during a hold-up but were never caught. Now living under false identities, they blend into society — until one turns herself in to the FBI. The lawyer must track down the other members in order to clear his name. Meanwhile, a modernday journalist (Shia LaBeouf) tries to prove himself. I was joined by two members of the Cape May Film Society on a special outing to see the film (is this not why we are members?). We discussed the film over dinner and wine afterward (also a main benefit of membership!). We all had a clear recall of life during the time period depicted. We remembered how vehement people were, as reflected by the radical characters, but we agreed that unless you experienced that era you probably won’t sympathize with them. “A movie with four Academy Award

The reviewers say the days of Robert Redford’s running scenes are behind him. winning actors plus five nominees should be extremely compelling,” began the first society member, “but I found myself drifting off.” “The plot and premise were provocative,” said the second, “but the unraveling was a bit tedious.” “I disagree,” said the third. “The suspense was great, and I enjoyed the twists and turns. It kept my attention.” The first continued, “I spent most of the

time trying to figure out the timelines. Some characters did not look their ages — maybe radicalism keeps you looking young?” “I liked that young kid (LaBeouf),” said the second. “He is really cute.” “He’s too young for you,” replied the third, “better stick to Redford.” The second member agreed, then said to the first, “By the way, looking at Redford in his role as a radical plays havoc with your theory about radicalism keeping you young.” “Too true,” said the third reviewer. The first reviewer disagreed, “Listen, we may not all agree on the pacing of the movie, but let’s all agree that Redford should not do any more running scenes.” And with a toast of our wine glasses, we all agreed Redford’s running scene was painful to watch — and that it might be best to wait for the DVD on this one. We also agreed that these movie socials are a great way to have fun and trash (or praise) a film with friends. Want to join us? Email capemayfilm@hotmail.com, and we’ll include you on the next trip! See you at the movies!

Activity Of The Week

F

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: West Cape May Strawberry Festival

OR many people, the summer season starts with the taste of a locally-grown strawberry. You can get your own first taste of summer at the West Cape May Strawberry Festival on June 1. The strawberry, a plant native to both the old world and the new, is cultivated worldwide. Strawberries have been credited with medicinal powers since the ancient Romans used them to treat fever, halitosis, kidney stones and gout, and Sir Walter Raleigh soaked them in alcohol to make “cordial water,” a medicine to “cleanse the blood.” Today’s nutritionists call the strawberry a superfood. The plant is a member of the rose family, and its name may come from the Anglo-Saxons, who noticed that the tiny berries ripened while the hay, or “streow,” was mowed. Then again, the name may come from the way the runners of the plant “strew” away from the mother plant, or from the way children would string the berries on straw to sell. Though the plant was in use for centuries, it grew almost accidentally. It had

Come enjoy this delectable little fruit at the West Cape May Strawberry Festival. some bad press for a while — some people feared it was poisonous, and Ann Boleyn’s strawberry-shaped birthmark was said to be proof that she was a witch — but it was also associated with the Virgin Mary, and, because of its heart shape, with true love. Still, few farmers cultivated the strawberry before its popularity exploded in the eighteenth century, when someone crossed the sweet American plant with its delicate European cousin.

The West Cape May Business Association salutes the strawberry at the annual Strawberry Festival, in Wilbraham Park on June 1, from 9am to 5pm. Take your bike or walk to this popular local event, wear sunscreen, and bring a basket, because you will stay longer than you planned, and you are sure to find something you want to take home. Food vendors at the festival are encouraged to feature strawberries, and in the past visitors have been treated to chocolate-covered strawberries, strawberry ice cream, strawberry iced tea, strawberry smoothies, strawberry jams and jellies, and even strawberry barbecue and empanada sauce. You can also find tee shirts, tote bags, and jewelry paying tribute to the strawberry, as well as non-strawberry related products. Browse through the work of local artists and enjoy the music of local bands. The Lima Bean Festival later in the year may be just as much fun, but it’s not nearly as tasty. Get a taste of summer at the West Cape May Strawberry Festival. Next week: Getaway with the Guys

KIA is an older pit bull terrier who would really prefer to live out the rest of her years in a nice home. The shelter life just isn’t for her! She would make a great companion for an active owner — Kia may not be young anymore, but she still loves to play! She gets along great with other dogs, kids, and even cats. If you’re looking for someone special to light up your life, stop by the shelter and visit her. Kia’s adoption fee is only $35!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

JASMINE and BELLA were brought to the shelter because pets weren’t permitted on their owner’s property. They’re very sad because they were loved so much by their old owner. They are now staying at the PetSmart, but they are homesick. These two cats are very close, so if you adopt one for $70, the other comes along, too — for free!

«

BLAXIE and KIT-KAT are sweet girls who love getting attention! They could cuddle up and be pet all day long! These two are longhaired, which makes them especially fluffy! They came to the shelter together, and the only thing they know is each other. They are going to need to be adopted together. Together, their adoption fee is only $35!
