We love hearing stuff like this.

As we prepared this issue for the printer, we got a message on our Facebook page from a woman, Karen Klein-Schaffer, whose sister is currently visiting Cape May. She lost her debit card and driver’s license, and the man named Steve who stumbled upon them on Sunset Beach tracked her down and refused to take any money as a reward. Good on you, Steve. And the rest of you stand-up Cape Mayans out there... this isn’t the first time we’ve heard this story.

Ahhhhh...

Thanks to the women at Evolution Salon and Spa in North Cape May for the fabulous time they gave to our writer and her mother and sister last weekend.

On Your Mark...

IN AN article last year, we referred to Cape May as exercise island, because you can barely throw a Frisbee in this town without hitting a biker/runner/speed walker/ person waiting for Hot Dog Tommy’s. (We’ve seen you jogging to get in line for potato tornadoes, so it counts). But this summer, that phrase takes on new meaning.

We’ve had advertisements come across our desks for the usual suspects (turkey trots, turtle runs, glow runs, elementary school triathlons, the Cape May Point Five Miler, the Great Cape May Footrace, the Beachfront Run, the Ocean Drive Marathon), but also for some new, very wild events.

We’re referring, firstly, to the first-ever Escape the Cape,

an umbrella term for the three competitions that took place last Sunday, when 827 people launched themselves from the Cape May Lewes Ferry into the Delaware Bay for the first leg of The Sprint Triathlon (a .35 mile swim, 10-mile bike, and 5k run), the International Triathlon (a onemile swim, 20-mile bike, and fivemile run), or the International Aquabike (one-mile swim and 20-mile bike).

Event organizer Stephen Del Monte of DelMo Sports, Inc. says there was a 20 percent no-show rate — a standard for endurance events such as this, where registration happens far in advance and training often leads to injuries — but that everyone who made it on to the boats did take the leap. A surprising fact when you consider

the drop (approximately 12 feet from ship to water), and a not-sosurprising fact when you consider Stephen had a certified sports psychologist on deck to help coldfooted athletes find their confidence.

“I had a vision in my head of how this event would go,” Stephen told us. “What it would look like as people arrived, as the boat pulled away, as the sun was shining… and it exceeded all of my expectations. This is the most successful inaugural event in triathlon history.”

The proof of this last point is in the surveys Stephen sent out to all participants at 6am the day following the race. By 2:30pm, 400 people had already responded.

After a short hiatus, the Highland House on Broadway will once again host a pet-friendly “pawtea” on Saturday June 15.

There will be refreshments and treats, as always, but this time, instead of a daytime affair, the pawtea will be more of a yappy hour. Be there (with your mutts!) between 6 and 9pm. It’s a great way to meet other pet people!

And remember, the event is free, but all donations benefit Animal Outreach of Cape May County.

And spare some good thoughts to Patch, the Highland House dog whose currently undergoing treatment for some healthrelated issues.

“I believe that Lower Township will eventually be marketing its tourism for the year around this race,” Stephen said. “I know that sounds crazy, but we just had nearly a thousand people jump off a boat yesterday, and that sounded crazy at first, too. And why wouldn’t we do this in Lower Township? I believe we have more to offer here than anywhere else.”

It’s largely this enthusiasm — coupled with the troubleshooting of a very prepared staff — that has left so many of the athletes raving about their experience.

Among them is Joe Caruso, a local importer of wine and the guy who took first in his division — men aged 40-45 — and 20th overall in the International Tria-

thalon. “Stephen had everything so tight,” he said. “Everything was just perfect.”

So perfect that when the boat needed repositioning several times because of troublesome currents, leaving some of the athletes onboard — and in the heat — for an hour-and-a-half longer than anticipated, the wait didn’t feel so bad. “Stephen thought to bring bins of ice onboard,” Joe said, “to pour down the backs of athletes’ necks before jumping into the water.”

But even more than the preparedness level, it was the energy at the starting line that has Joe thinking Escape the Cape will be a “bucket list” race for the country’s best athletes and “the most important race on the east coast” before too long. And he should know. He’s run 30 major races, including an Ironman (that’s a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, and a marathon, for those of you nonsuperhuman Cape Mayans).

“It has all the elements,” Joe said. “The course is beautiful, and it does put you to the test. This

kind of thing allows people to find courage they didn’t know they had.

Escape from Alcatraz is a wellknown race with a similar concept, but Escape the Cape involves a bigger boat, a bigger jump, even a greater threat of sharks, which I’m sure enters everyone’s minds at some point.”

As for how it feels to come out number one? “I’m an above average performer with average tools,” Joe said. “I wanted to make sure I won for the local community, and I’ve learned from it. I’ve learned that my goal — qualifying for the Kona Ironman in Hawaii one day — may not be such a pipe dream after all.”

Joe wasn’t the only big dreamer to cross the finish line this day. Enter 31-year-old Jason Malick, an Avalon-based Escape the Cape finisher who is planning to swim across the Delaware Bay at some point this summer.

Unfortunately, due to wicked currents and dehydration-related cramping, only Lelane RossouwBancroft of Delaware made it, a triumph that took 10 hours. Last Saturday morning, the group was poised to try again, but strong winds made for too-choppy seas, and they had to postpone until a later date, to be determined based on weather and tides.

As the crow flies, the distance from Sunset Beach to Delaware is 11.4 miles, but the precise location of the finish line isn’t set, as currents will shift the swimmers.

No matter the exact distance, this constitutes a marathon swim, and as such, participants will not be allowed to so much as touch the Coast Guard Auxiliary boats that will be part of their support crew en route without technical disqualification, or to wear any type of wetsuit. “It’s okay,” Jason told us, “I don’t tend to get cold. I’m

230 pounds; I’m not a little guy.”

It’s a feat that’s been accomplished before, first by a Philadelphia banker named Charles Durborow in 1912 then by Paul Timmons in 2007. So why would anyone else want to replicate it? “There’s something euphoric about being immersed in nature,” Jason said, “about being one with the elements.”

Cape May’s tourist information radio station, AM 1700WQEL630, is about to return to the airwaves. It’s off the air until all repairs are completed on the Madison Avenue Water Tower What does the water tower have to do with a low-power radio station? Its antenna was once located there.

The station provides a repeating five-minute audio loop of events and activities in Cape May, as well as information about parking meters and beach tags. In the past, parades and the annual Halloween celebration were promoted on the station.

AM 1700 has been an onand-off affair, according to City Manager Bruce MacLeod. Originally, the station was operated by staff at 98.7-The Coast from their former studios on Pacific Avenue in Wildwood.

Former Coastal Broadcast-

ing owner Bill Huf was integral in putting AM 1700 on the air, said MacLeod, and his his dulcet tones will return when the transmitter is turned on once again.

“It took us about 18 months to get Verizon to relocate that phone line to City Hall,” said MacLeod AM 1700 went off the air last fall when its antenna was removed from the water tower.

Plans call for the station to return to the airwaves no later than early July when the water tower project, including a paint job, is concluded.

Signs at all entrances to Cape May invite motorists to tune into AM 1700 for tourist information.

The radio station is operated by a computer located in City Hall and does not have the capability of broadcasting live, according to MacLeod.

The station’s longest stretch of broadcasting was about 12 consecutive months. It was licensed in 2006 when Lou Corea was city manager.

In severe weather, tourist

information on AM 1700 could be dropped in place of emergency information, said MacLeod.

The Federal Communications Commission allows tourist information stations to broadcast with a power of only 10 watts.

The light bulb in your refrigerator probably uses more power.

However, placing the antenna on the water tower gives the station a signal that can be heard for approximately three miles from Cape May. Under the most ideal conditions, the signal may be heard as far away as Rio Grande, said MacLeod.

The city is not trying to unseat the king of AM Radio, Rush Limbaugh in the ratings.

“There is a limited opportunity for those who are visitors here to observe the signs and pick up on the fact we have that radio station,” said MacLeod, who believes local residents also tuned into the station to hear updates on local events.

Over the last six years, Michelle has become as attached to her clients’ pets as she is to her own three dogs. “They become my family,” she said. “When one passes away, it crushes me. But doing this kind of work, there are so many emotions, because then I also get to look forward to the phone calls, a few months later, saying ‘We got a new puppy!’”

She also looks forward to sharing the pointers (as in tips, not English) she picks up along the way. Here are some of her best: 1. Mind the heat. “Early morning or evening is fine,” she said. “But people should not be dragging their dogs to the beach midday in the summer. I see so many people who leave them melting under an umbrella, while they’re drinking a beer!”

2. Use a crate the right way.

“It can be a great tool for keeping your dog safe when you’re not home,” Michelle said. “But if you’re sticking your dog in it all day… I can’t stand that. While

some of whom call on her for dog walks daily, and some of whom need her for their one big vacation a year.

“It’s a seven-day-a-week job,” she told us. “I could probably write a book about the experiences.”

Like the time Michelle peered inside a little cat house, only to find herself nose to nose with a confused raccoon. “I spent the whole day shaking!” she said.

Or the time she needed to throw on a pair of oven mitts in order to get one particularly mouthy puppy into a collar and leash.

“I don’t give up,” she said. “That dog needed to pee!” Or the time Michelle cared for a bird who repeated her every move. “If I sniffled, he sniffled,” she said. “If I cleared my throat, he cleared his throat. Then he’d start laughing at me. I told him he was being fresh, and then I realized I was arguing with a bird.”

3. Feed at the right time. “If you throw your dog’s food down before having to race out the door for work, they begin to associate their eating with your leaving,” Michelle said. “It’s better to have them eat while you’re sitting down with your morning cup of coffee.”

4. Finally, enjoy treating your pets well. “Some people think

having a doggie nanny is spoiling your pets,” Michelle said. “But I had one client tell me that she doesn’t spoil them; she treats her pets the way they’re supposed to be treated. They love us unconditionally, and I learn from them everyday how to be more patient and compassionate. This is why I am so grateful to do what I do.”

A Year Of Drama And Intrigue At East Lynne

From world premieres to Sherlock Holmes favorites, a mixed bag of theatrical goodies

HE award-winning Equity professional East Lynne Theater Company has exciting shows lined up for its thirtythird season. It includes the usual world premiere (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow), a New Jersey premiere (Lost on the Natchez Trace), a comedy by a Pulitzer Prizewinning playwright (The Late Christopher Bean), an American detective joins Holmes in our popular radio-style productions (Holmes and Carter Mysteries) and their storytelling holiday show (Christmas with Harte and O. Henry).

From June 12 to July 20 at 8:30pm, the spotlight is on the New Jersey premiere of Lost on the Natchez Trace. Slave auctioneer Malcolm Jeters is headed home when he falls from his mule during a violent storm. Injured and starving, he yells for help. The only one who appears is a runaway slave. The question in this compelling new play is who will save whom?

Written by Jan Buttram, co-founder and artistic director of Abingdon Theatre Company in NYC, the play was first produced

The remarkable play, Lost on the Natchez Trace, is coming to East Lynne on June 12 at Abingdon in 2012. After seeing it, ELTC’s artistic director, Gayle Stahlhuth, asked Jan if she would like to make further changes to the script, including adding a third person to the cast, and have another theatrical run, directed by Stahlhuth. Buttram jumped at the

opportunity.

Tom Byrn, who was in last season’s It Pays to Advertise and other ELTC productions, is playing the slave trader. New to ELTC is Leon Morgan, portraying the runaway slave.

On Tuesday, July 2 at 8:00pm, it’s ELTC’s popular admission-free student production, An Evening of Fables. After nine rehearsals, students ages 10-15 take to the stage in an entertaining event for all ages. Students interested in being part of the workshop, contact ELTC for applications.

Next up is the world premiere, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow from July 24 to August 31 at 8:30pm. The townsfolk believe that the headless body of a Hessian soldier astride his horse haunts their isolated village. When Ichabod Crane suddenly disappears, is it the fault of the Headless Horseman, or something else? Washington Irving’s supernatural story is adapted by James Rana who so vividly created ELTC’s last season’s The Poe Mysteries. Also like “Poe,” this production, with its cast of six, under the direction of Gayle Stahlhuth, travels up to Ocean Professional Theatre Company in Barnegat, NJ in late October.

Recently he was in Chemistry of Love at La Mama in NYC. Then it’s the delightful comedy The Late Christopher Bean, running from September 18 to October 13, a 1932 Broadway sensation by Pulitzer Prize-winner Sidney Howard. After his death, Christopher Bean is heralded as a great artist, and the art world now wants his work. But did a New England family destroy his paintings, misplace them, or hide them?

“It’s a play that has remained fresh and funny, proving once again that a strong script is rarely tarnished by time,” wrote Ken Jaworowski in his New York Times review of The Actors Company Theater’s production in 2009.

The cast is a blend of ELTC favorites and new performers. Actors who’ve appeared with ELTC before include Ken Glickfeld , Mark Edward Lang, and Maria Silverman. New to ELTC are Jennifer Bissell, recently in Mame at Media Theatre in Pennsylvania, Seth James, who performs with the American Globe Theatre in NYC, Francesca Mondelli, who works with WARP Theatre in Seattle, Bradley Mott, a regular performer at Steppenwolf and the Goodman Theatre, and Michelle Tomko who’s worked at The Cleveland Playhouse and

Actors Theatre of Louisville.

On November 1 and 2, it’s Holmes and Carter Mysteries, ELTC’s popular vintage-radio style production, complete with live sound effects and commercials, featuring Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Copper Beeches about a governess in peril, and Nick Carter and the Strange Dr. Devolo, in which Manhattan millionaires are missing.

For the holidays, from November 29 to December 14, with 8:00pm and 2:00pmcurtain times, it’s Christmas with Harte and O. Henry.

Based on tales from the Old West written by Bret Harte and O. Henry, they are brought beautifully to life in storytelling fashion by ELTC’s artistic director, Gayle Stahlhuth. As in her other holiday shows, she portrays thirtyplus characters.

Along with the mainstage productions, ELTC is proud to offer its Sunday Film Series, co-sponsored with The Cape May Film Society. On June 30 at 8:30pm, to accompany ELTC’s mainstage production of Lost on the Natchez Trace and commemorate the 150th Anniversary of America’s Emancipation Proclamation, is the 2006 film Amazing Grace, about William Wilberforce’s battle to abolish slavery in England in the late 1700s.

The Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s weekly column... it’s about nothing and everything, all at the same time

TRANGELY, even after making everyone aware that May 23 was my 20th anniversary of coming to Cape May, I still haven’t received a call from City Hall for parade arrangements. But I’ll continue to wait by the phone. Seems I’m waiting by the phone for a lot of things these days…

So I’ve been spending a LOT of time at the Exit Zero offices the last couple of months to work on various Exit Zero-related things, like The Wild Times, our new summer weekly exclusive to Wildwood. You’ve heard of Wildwood. Exit 4B. About nine miles from where you’re sitting. Bunch of blinking lights.

Anyway, as I’ve been getting superintense training on how to put a magazine together, sell ads and delegate responsibilities (this one is tough for me because I’m a hands-on type manager and how can anyone POSSIBLY write as good as me. Or, um, as well as me?) it struck me just how little out-loud talking goes on in the bustling editorial offices of EZ. I mean, there’s plenty of world-class muttering, and soft conversation into various telephone-type devices, but very

little actual human verbal communication.

I’m a talker, so it’s taken some getting used to.

But with each glare I get for sharing a joke or anecdote I’m learning to keep my head down and shut the hell up. I mean, it’s not like these guys are busy, or anything, cobbling together a half-dozen books and magazines, opening two new stores and ignoring me.

On my drive in to the office every day I notice that the Cape Island Garden Center switches out their signs from “10,003 Plants in Rear” to “10,004” or “10,001.” And I wonder who in the hell exactly goes back there and counts every day. This demands a probing, investigative report. And if I didn’t have such bad allergies I would totally do it… really.

I am also becoming quite friendly with the staff at 7-11 on the corner of Sunset and Broadway. We’re not quite on a first-name basis yet, but I think they’re getting used to seeing my round, shiny face in there three or four mornings a week. (I recently shaved off my Van Dyke, so my face is now exponentially more rounder and shinier from all the loose flesh and sweat.) And on each one of those mornings I have a little staring contest with the rolling logs of goodness in the rolling log of goodness case; Buffalo taquitos, cheeseburger rolls, sausage and pancake cylinders, and so on. I have yet to lose one of these contests yet, but something tells me that in a few weeks, on my drive home from Boiler Room Terry O’ke, I just might succumb. Because nothing tops off a night of karaoke like mashed-up cylindrical meat-type products smothered in ketchup on a squishy bun.

And is this a real thing? Chicken and waffles-flavored Lay’s? I thought that was an Internet joke. If so, it has gone terribly wrong.

The Undertow ? From Page 41 but nothing wakes you up quite like narrowly avoiding a sevencar pile-up at Duckie’s produce stand (and there’s usually only eight cars on the road). Can we do something about this? I understand Jersey tomatoes are really good, but I don’t want to die in a fiery explosion because of that.

Don’t forget, in just two short weeks, Terry O’ke re-commences in the Boiler Room at Congress Hall. Kiddy O’ke followed by Terry O’ke on Thursdays (5:30-8 kids, 9-12 bigger kids) and 6:30-9 on Sundays (kids-only, and hosted by new mom Shannon Vail, make her feel welcome, won’t you?). It is my prediction that “I Love It (I Don’t Care)” by Icona Pop, and “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk will be the big kids’ songs this summer, ensuring 11 fabulous weeks of cringing at kids while they sing grown-up lyrics, joining the likes of “Poker Face” and “I Kissed a Girl.” Yes, I speak with these kids’ parents before I let them sing these songs. No, the parents don’t care now get the hell away from me I’m trying to drink my wine!

Up on Morey’s Piers last weekend we had the annual Education Extravaganza event. This is where hundres of the area’s best students earn free wristbands to come up and enjoying the rides. So it was a bunch of SMART kids that entered Ghost Ship to get their faces scared off.

There is NO better audience for Ghost Ship than hundreds of terrified teenagers. Their screams are music to our ears. Which is not weird AT ALL… And a quick shout-out to Ghost Shippers Tyna Fontannaz, Brittany Burns and Scott Robart for putting on a Behind the Scenes make-up workshop and backstage tour. Minus all the bells and whistles, Ghost Ship is your average, everyday workplace. Except instead of suits and ties we wear blood and guts. But again, not weird…

Stopped into Q Fire Grill Thursday night on a Wild Times sales call (upon seeing me, Ryan the manager suddenly had five phone calls to return and a note-

book to flip through... perhaps we’ve made one too many sales calls to Q?) and ran into former local Missy Mendo, who is steadily climbing the corporate ladder up at Bally’s in Atlantic City. She’s come a long way from the young karaoke hustler (who relentlessly mocked my modified White Guy Dance when I sang Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida”) I knew lo those many years ago at Rio Station. Was the first time I saw her in a few years and she said, “Damn, you look good!” Which mainly speaks to how un-good I must have looked years ago...

I heard “Stuck in the Middle With You” by Stealer’s Wheel on the radio the other day and my left ear immediately began to itch. Is Michael Madsen-phobia a thing? If not, it should be. Along with Nochargaphobia, the fear of leaving your house with your cell phone battery not fully charged.

Lastly this week, continuing to a disturbing Undertow trend for 2013, I pass this along from Janet Buchianico. “It is with a very heavy heart I tell you that my Daddy, Henry Buchianico, passed away on May 9. I am so glad that I was able to give him a party for his 90th birthday and that you were part of it. I just recently read your write up of his party and your words were very true, my Daddy was a good guy and I can’t tell you how much I miss him.”

Thanks for keeping Undertow in the loop, Janet. And we’re very sorry to hear this as Will Knapp and I indeed had a great time playing the party at the ferry terminal earlier this spring. He seemed in good health and good spirits, surrounded by friends and family, and that’s pretty okay. 90 years is a good run. We should all be so lucky.

And for those who have sent good thoughts and words regarding my mother, first; thanks. Second, she is doing well and recently returned home to commence out-patient treatment for her ailment. Please, if you haven’t hugged or called your mom today, stop what you’re doing and correct that. We only get one. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in the Undertow.

Educational, Family Activities At Cold Spring Village This living, open-air history museum will get your child’s summer vacation (and yours!) off on the right foot...

WO days of family-friendly, interactive and educational fun are planned for Historic Cold Spring Village’s FunFest Weekend, Saturday and Sunday, June 8-9, from 10am to 4:30pm.

Children will be given a ‘Pastport’ at the start of their Village trip, which can be stamped at the buildings they visit after completing a take-home craft or activity, like writing with a quill pen, carding wool or making a pinch pot. Pastports can be redeemed at the Country Store for a treat!

The Family Activity Area will feature children’s dress-up clothes, historic games, and take-home crafts. Other activities include face painting, demonstrations by the New Jersey Blacksmith Association and live entertainment from traditional musician Mary Roth.

Historic Cold Spring Village is a nonprofit, open-air living history museum that portrays the daily life of a rural South Jersey community of the Early American period.

It features 26 restored historic structures

Visitors are invited to participate in hands-on crafts and historical activities at HCSV’s Fun Fest, June 8-9. on a 30-acre site. From late June to early September, interpreters and artisans in period clothing preserve the trades, crafts and heritage of “the age of homespun.” Fun and educational activities for children are featured Tuesday through Sunday, with

special events every weekend through midSeptember. The Village is located on Route 9, three miles north of Victorian Cape May. Admission during the season is $10 for adults and $8 for children ages 3 to 12. Call 609898-2300, or visit hcsv.org.

The Old Fogey

L

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ET ME tell you about hot weather. Let me start by saying that nothing in double digits is even remotely warm, let alone hot. Why, in midday temperatures of 99.99° Fahrenheit I have worn a down parka such as the Eskimos wear, and still been a trifle shivery.

In my day, a heatwave was not measured in digits, but as to whether a china cup of water left on a windowsill would boil within four minutes (the amount of time a tea aficionado is prepared to wait for water to boil before flying into a violent rage). And then whether a Shoebie left outside unattended for the same amount of time would burst into flames.

Not just smoldering, mind you, but actual spontaneous combustion such as used to be featured in the sensational magazines when I was a lad, and Ma D’Catur used to bring them home to tut and frown and disapprove of their scandalous content whilst devouring every word.

I recall sneaking a peek one evening when Ma had gone to bed, exhausted from

her labors of beating the eight D’Catur boys with her leather belt for various sins (which ranged from eating before Grace was said to daring to suggest that the Earth is round) and was fascinated by the procession engravings of what Ma called “cheap hoors” in tiny outfits, and weird circus people with tiny heads or twins protruding from their shoulders.

But what stayed with me was the description of a gentleman from Philly, who one summer night simply caught fire on his porch, leaving nothing but a small pile of

greasy ash and a set of mahogany false teeth, despite his chair, table and corgi dog being unscathed. Since that night I have slept in a bath full of water, for fear of the same, but never did see the same until I watched some visitors to town step out when the daytime temperatures exceeded 200°F. In fairness, an ample Shoebie combusting is not the clean clinical affair described in Ma’s magazine: it was more of a colossal tallow candle being lit, and the heat was intense. In fact it’s a little known fact that the great fire of 1878 was caused by such a flaming tourist, who tried to douse the flames with whiskey.

Well, it’s been many a year since we had the kind of heat to melt the beach to glass, dry the ocean so much that Cape May’s longsubmerged cathedral is visible and turn the canal into a steaming dry dock, but this, my friends, will be the summer to bring those good old days back. All the signs are there, and I am confident that we will see a high exceeding 400°F, and we will be posting a Daily Shoebie Combustion time limit for people to stay out of doors.

Lower Cape May Regional freshman Alec Levin, son of Pam and Reid of North Cape May, made third varsity singles after only playing tennis for two short years. It took a long summer of training and practicing on his own every day to prepare him for his spot on the varsity squad.

Levin said that his inspiration is his grandfather, and he credits head varsity tennis coach Mr. Greg Douglass as being his greatest supporter on the tennis court. “He motivates me and keeps me wanting to play,” said Levin.

Levin’s dream is to attend the University of California, Davis to earn a degree in winemaking.

HE higher-end supermarkets today bear little resemblance to the mom-and-pop grocery stores that were replaced by mid-sized stores that were then outclassed

by WholeFoods and Wegmans. Their aisles are full of products that are carefully vetted for marketability and displayed in a way to pull you in and empty your wallet. I’ll often buy stuff I’ll never eat because it’s so appealing at the time. Not to mention the sushi bar, omelet station, florist and bakery. (The free-range, vegan cupcakes are awesome).

By far, the most impressive section of the store is the produce area with its displays resembling mosaic art. It’s as if you’ve fallen into a cornicopea. Perfectly round, red apples, brilliantly yellow lemons, symmetric horns of bananas provide the best of nutrition to you and your kids. Right?

Well, according to an article by David Leonhardt in the New York Times, “Studies published within the past 15 years show that much of our produce is relatively low in phytonutrients, which are the compounds with the potential to reduce the risk of four of our mod-

ern scourges: cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and dementia.” He goes on to say: “Unwittingly, we have been stripping phytonutrients from our diet since we stopped foraging for wild plants some 10,000 years ago and became farmers.”

Turns out we crave sweet over bitter, sour or astringent, so over the years farmers are have continually chosen sweeter and milder alternatives. The trouble for us is that those not-so-sweet things are much more nutritious. Wild Dandelion, for instance, is seven times more nutritious than spinach. If you don’t want to be scouring Higbee fields for dandelion for dinner, here are some easy ways to step up your vegie choices in the supermarket. (By the way, many of these can be easily grown in a pot or a small garden and they grow like weeds.)

Try arugula in your salads. It has a nutty flavor and is full cancer-fighting compounds called glucosinolates and anti-oxidants Scallions are five times as nutrient laden as common onions but make sure you use the green stem as that is where the most goodness lies. Swing out with a purple potato. You will be the coolest guest when you show up with purple, German potato salad and wild scallions. These spuds blow away the competition when it comes to delivering taste and phytonutrients.

Finally, use herbs in abundance and experiment with adding them into your everyday meals to increase the flavor and nutrient load. Ok, now go get wild.

The Movie Column

I

This week, Cape May Film Society President Dottie Knapp reviews “Star Trek Into Darkness”

MPORTANT disclaimer: if you plan on seeing Star Trek Into Darkness, either watch the previous re-imagining of Star Trek (2009) or remember that this movie takes place in an “alternate universe” — otherwise, things might not make sense. Once you understand the context of the movie, just about anyone can enjoy it.

So many friends I talked to say “I don’t like sci-fi films, but...”, or “I’m definitely not a Trekkie, but...” and then go on to tell me how much they enjoyed the film. Right now, we’re staying in the Arab state of Abu Dhabi, where movie theater seats are assigned. So I went early in the morning to buy tickets for a good location later that evening.

If I were a professional reviewer, I would say that the movie is filled with homage to the Star Trek franchise. But since I’m not, I’ll just say, “Boy, there were a lot of clichés in this movie.” The 2009 movie recharged the series and was very innovative, while this sequel is closer to the original.

Just remember – the new “Star Trek” takes place in an alternate universe. ever. I wish I’d studied my Klingon because when they spoke, the sub-titles were in Arabic and I had no idea what was being said.

But hey, I could read the body language, and I understood that they weren’t about to shake hands and live in peace.

The villain was a complex character played by Benedict Cumberbatch, whose magnificent voice and good looks made him difficult for me to root against. I liked that each of the members of the crew were given

significant screen time, so they did more than just say “Yes, captain.” And Zachary Quinto’s portrayal of Spock was pleasantly surprising.

My husband is never happy with the filming of fight scenes or action scenes in today’s movies, as the camera angles don’t allow him to see who is who and he can’t tell who won until you see someone walk away.

I’ve told him to get used to it, but he insists on complaining... So for his sake, I’m just mentioning it in the review.

Most of the film’s humor surrounds the use of the earlier mentioned clichés, such as the running gag of when Karl Urban, playing Dr. McCoy, says “I’m a doctor, not a- (fill in the blank)”. And when you see Spock and Uhuru (Zoe Saladana) kissing, remember what I said at the beginning: “alternate universe.”

F YOU want to make some new memories with your old friends, get away with the guys to Cape May. Friendships are essential to the mental and physical health of men — research shows that close friendships boost your immune system, and friends encourage you to take care of yourself. When you need inspiration, support, or a kick in the rear, a friend delivers.

Your significant other may be your better half, but your friend can be your other self. Men of the Victorian era understood this. They also understood that friendships need maintenance. If your friends are still telling stories about that epic U2 concert in 1987, it’s time for a new adventure.

Try something new together — you’ll lay the foundation for fresh stories, and have a chance to catch up without any awkward moments. Men tend to be more comfortable talking side-by-side while doing something. Even if you don’t like the activity, or you’re no good at it, you’ll have a new story to tell.

Why not learn to golf? At Cape May

Fishing: the poster sport of male friendship.

Par 3 and Driving Range, you can learn for a reasonable price. Clubs, pull carts and bags are available for rent, and beach attire is acceptable. Already a golfer? You can play this 18-hole course in about two hours. You could also work on your form (or just have fun messing around) by hitting a basket of balls. For a more traditional golf experience, spend the day at Cape May National Golf Club. Call 609-884-1563 for details.

Take advantage of Cape May’s location

for some sport fishing. Party boats like the Porgy IV — billed as the largest party boat in town — offer eight-hour trips, day or night. Rods and reels are available for rent, fish cleaning service is available, and you bring your own lunch. Call 609-884-1214 for information.

Or charter a small boat just for your group. Down Deep Sport Fishing at Utsch’s Marina offers four, six or eight-hour trips for groups from one to fifteen, on the ocean or the bay. Bring your own refreshments (as long as it’s not in a glass container). Blacksoled shoes are not allowed. Call 609-6898631 for dates and information.

A useful tip for a day at sea: don’t drink alcohol if you’re prone to motion sickness.

Wear sunscreen and a hat, and take lots of pictures, even of the fish you have to throw back. Someday, this trip will be part of an old story, and you’ll want to prove how young/fit/not bald you were. When you dock, walk your sea legs over to dinner at Lucky Bones and get started on those stories you’ll be telling for the next 30 years.
