At last year’s Chili and Chowder Challenge, aunt/ nephew team of Anthony and Catherine Bosna made a vegetarian chili even though they aren’t vegetarian because “it just tastes better.” They ended up taking home the best amateur chili title. Will they defend it this year? Find out on February 17. Chili Out! GOOD luck to all 17 amateur and professional competitors (eight more than last year!) who are participating in the third annual Cape May Chili and Chowder Challenge, happening in the Congress Hall ballroom on Sunday, February 17 from 11am to 3pm. We were among the 239 souls who turned up last year, had a blast, listened to great music, and ate until we couldn’t eat anymore. THIS year, we’re hearing there will be a conch chowder for the first time ever, courtesy of the Island Grill, and Chef William Walters of the Queen Victoria B&B will be there to defend his title.

Cold Embrace THIS week, Chris GillinSchwartz sent us a letter about a recent event, with a note that the Cape May community might be interested in this. We read it, and we have to say, we sympathize with Chris on this one. Here’s what he had to say: Two weeks ago during the region’s deep freeze, a chilling crime was committed in Cape May Point. At approximately 4pm EST, a handful of young men parked and gathered next to the lake in the shadow of the Cape May lighthouse. These young men pulled large wooden sticks from their cars and strapped razorsharp blades to their feet. They proceeded to step on the lake (which was frozen from three days of extreme cold) and began

tossing a small black disk around between them. These delinquents were even laughing and cheering as they cut across the frozen lake. They seemed to really be enjoying themselves. As you can imagine, it was horrifying. Luckily, a concerned citizen had the courage to stand on the edge of the lake and order these convicts off the lake. Amazingly, the order, which was made without any demonstration of actual authority or citing a specific violation, was ignored by the young men as they continued to “laugh” and “play,” and do other unspeakable things. The worst part is this person was the only individual there who seemed to care about law and order. Other passersby were neutral or even seemed to encourage the behavior. Some people slowed

their cars as they drove by, got out to take photographs, or even cheered the men on saying horrible things like “Man, I wish I had my skates in my truck,” and “GOAL!!!” Finally, the police and park ranger were called to remove the boys from the lake. The boys were told they were trespassing. If they had cared to examine the Cape May Point State Park’s website they would have seen the clear and unambiguous language that the park is open from “dawn to dusk.” Somewhere hidden beyond the grey clouds and flurries of snow, the sun was setting on the horizon. The “game” was over. Justice was served. Now, if there is one thing I enjoy, it is the steadfast enforcement of malum prohibitum laws.

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 These are laws that prohibit things, not because they are inherently evil (like murder, theft, assault), but because the state says so (speed limit, no-skateboarding signs, parking tickets). It takes a special kind of person with zeal and determination to deputize themselves and enforce these types of laws. Every citizen should understand their civic duty to step up and say things like, “Hey, you can’t park there,” and “Hey, you can’t play here.” No law is too small or non-existent to be worthy of complaining and involving the police. Actual incidents of crime like assault and theft should take a back seat to things like parking for five minutes at the sea wall with flashers on to “check the waves.” If you are someone who nods in agreement when he reads Thomas Paine and believes the government’s involvement in our daily lives should be as limited as possible, the idea of making your-

self an arm of the state may not sit well. I admit it is not for everyone. It is a calling. The reason I wrote this is to let that person know they were not alone. They were not the only person thinking something completely abusive and unnecessary happened on that lake two weeks ago. — Chris Gillin-Schwartz

Guitar Hero

LOCAL guitar legend Geno White was 12 when he met Jimi Hendrix. He says “met,” even though they merely locked eyes, because the connection was so intense. “You know that moment right before you’re about to die?” he asked us. “How they say you’re whole life flashes before your eyes? This was similar. Time froze. Only, in that instant, I saw my future.” In front of the rotating stage where Hendrix played — at the Spectrum in Philadelphia — Geno snapped a photo with his Kodak Instamatic, and knew that he would be a musician for the rest of his life. He gave up skateboarding and surfing and play-

ing basketball. He devoted, to the dismay of his parents, all of his free time to playing. “The guitar is magical,” he said. “It kept me out of the gutter.” Out of the gutter, and on to such famous stages as the Knitting Factory in New York City and the Metro in Washington, where Geno showcased his instrumental, rock/blues fusion. And on to a stage in Quebec City, where Geno played for a crowd of 4,000 as a substitute for Mick Jones of the Rolling Stones during a Gongrevisit show. His guitar prowess has taken Geno around the world — places like Japan, Holland, Germany, Italy — and oftentimes with Pat Martino, famous jazz guitarist and dear friend who relied on Geno for 12 years as an assistant/ roadie/guitar tech after he suffered a brain aneurysm in 1980. It got him signed with two record labels — Lolo and Clearear — through which he’s put out eight CDs. In 2009, it got him on the

And now, it might just land him on stage at Madison Square Garden, opening for Eric Clapton this spring. To find out how, we met up with Geno in the house he rents on Jefferson Street. It was a mix of your typical Victorian home decor (a framed Monarch butterfly, a picture of the Cape May lighthouse, a floral print couch), and a rock and roller vibe — in the living room, we sat across from a Fender Stradocaster, amplifiers, and a poster of Jeff Beck. Martha, Geno’s Rat Terrier, trotted over to say hello, despite a severe allergic reaction that had her little head in a cone. “I don’t think people realize how important it is to care for animals; they’re smarter than we are,”

As he spoke, he tugged on the Sarasvati — Hindu goddess of art and music — medallion he wore around his neck, next to a skull-imprinted guitar pick. “The skull is a little bit of Keith Richards,” he told us. “An indication that I’ll be playing to the end of my life.” But before that, he’d really like to perform at the world’s most famous venue. I’ve never asked for anything,” he said. “But I am campaigning now. I need votes.” Geno explained that he’s in the 2013 Play Crossroads Contest, meaning he’s competing to perform at Madison Square Garden in April, as part of Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival. If he succeeds, he’ll join the ranks of BB King, Buddy Guy, John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, ZZ Top, Vince Gill, and so many guitar greats. “The contest is open to anyone who’s not signed to a major label, like Sony or Warner Brothers,” Geno said. “Anyone just below that. So I’m up against tal-

ent like Melissa Etheridge’s guitar player Philip Sayce, all the way down to 12-year-old kids.” The 100 contestants with the most votes will be put before a panel of judges comprised of “shredders” like Sheryl Crow’s guitarist Peter Stroud. They’ll be charged with narrowing it down to one. So why should you vote for Geno? “Heck, what guitar player doesn’t want to open for Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden?” he asked us. “But even more than that, I want the opportunity to represent Cape May. If I took this, I can offer a world-class delivery, and I can represent our town. People will be able to say, “Yo, that’s Geno, man!’” A self-described homeboy, Geno was born and bred here, and he feels proud to be able to teach guitar lessons to fellow Cape May lovers, and to perform at local venues. “I love it all,” he said. “One of my fondest memories is watching people dancing on the tables at a Martini Beach show. No mat-

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 whipping by, Cape May local Jay Eppenbach, a Cape May Elementary School teacher who used to play the game on a semiprofessional level, is looking to have a new court built on the old Fort Apache Campground site in Rio Grande. He and fellow frisbee golf advocates are planning their fundraising efforts and waiting on approval from Middle Township, which will happen — if all goes well —at the end of next month. We called Jay, who told us this is the fastest-growing sport in the world (it’s played in 40 different countries and on 3,300 courses in the US). “But Cape May County doesn’t know a lot about it,” he said. “It would be an opportunity to provide alternative recreation here.” Jay explained that the course would be especially exciting for kids. “We offer all the standards like baseball and basketball,” he

said, “but not every child wants to play those. This is inexpensive and easy to learn.” Not to mention, it’s a great sport for the enviornment. “It leaves a very small footprint,” he said. “It doesn’t take away from the natural scenery, and it allows us to maintain open space.” We asked Jay to keep us posted, so watch this space.

Not-So-Big Ben WE’RE delighted to see that our History Editor Ben Miller is making great progress in his bid to lose 230lbs (which is very close to the weight of an entire Exit Zero publisher). Ben has already shed 30lbs in three weeks, which is a remarkable start. He signed up with DDP Yoga, after being inspired by the amazing story of a fellow veteran. His regimen is a combination of tough exercise and strict dieting. “The workouts are crazy, but they’re good,” says Ben. We will keep you updated with Ben’s progress.

He is married with two young sons.”

JEN Hickok is an outstanding senior at Lower Cape May Regional High School. Jen, 17, lives in Fishing Creek with her parents Sharon and Darrin Hickok. FBLA is a student-run organization that teaches students business skills and supports their involvement in the business world from a young age. The Movie Column

This week, Dottie Knapp, Cape May Film Society president, reviews “Les Miserables”

OMINATED for eight Oscars (and 10 times that amount in more nominations from other award programs), we could not ask you to attend the Cape May Film Society free Pre-Oscar Party without talking about Les Miserables. Our party is Sunday, February 24 at 5:30pm at Mad Batter, and you are all invited! What can you say about this production? Some people will insist, “I’ve seen the play, can a film adaptation compare?” And I’m responding, “You will not be disappointed!” The visual effects of the movie made the film grittier than the stage play. All your favorite songs are there, and they are performed beautifully by most of the leads. I have no idea why Anne Hathaway got any grief (I’ve seen some press). She sang her heart out — and you felt it. Hugh Jackman has a term I’d like to coin: “Broadway cred.” My only complaint is in the casting of Russell Crowe. As an actor he is in the top tier. When he played Aubrey in Master and

Anne Hathaway turns in a remarkable performance in Les Miserables Commander (2003) he took violin lessons so he would look authentic as he played. Well, he took singing lessons for Les Mis — but he should stick with the violin! A story I’ve heard is that Cary Grant was asked to play Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady (1964), but he turned it down saying the part “belonged” to Rex Harrison, who had portrayed the professor for years on stage. It’s too bad that Audrey Hepburn didn’t feel the same way. She took the role, and we are

left with a dubbed in voice. So my question is, “Why do actors take roles that are beyond their ability?” This film lost momentum when Crowe sang. His two songs are among the most powerful, and they left me feeling nothing. When you see a musical on the stage, it is usually about the music. A movie is about the acting, hence the importance of being able to sing as the actors were filming scenes... and not recording in a studio. This movie really came alive when the students and the chorus came on. As far as I could tell they concentrated more on wonderful voices, not star quality. Finally, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen as the Thenardiers (the innkeepers) were well worth the price of admission. Terry O’Brien’s weekly column... it’s about nothing and everything, all at the same time

S YOU can see from the dozens of great pictures in this issue, I really wasn’t lying last week about Beatles Night; it was packed and it really was a watershed moment. Not only are we doing a second show this weekend (more on that in a bit) but there are several other irons in the fire (Billy Joel, Jesus Christ Superstar, Boyz II Men… okay, that one’s fake) as we seem to have struck a nerve with these themed tribute nights. There will also likely be a weekly Boiler Room open mic night this summer, but I don’t want to give away too much… I have also received some great, and not-so great suggestions for future theme nights. The Good: ’80s Night (dibs on “Roseanna”), Classic Rock Night (dibs on “Smoke on the Water”), R.E.M. Night (dibs on… all of them). The Bad: Pearl Jam (hard to fill a four-hour show with a band that has three songs… yeah, you heard me), Disco Night (disco’s dead, baby… disco’s dead) and Milli Vanilli. But keep those cards and letters coming. Kate Chadwick, your shirt is still in my

car. Kate Chadwick’s husband, I don’t mean that how it sounds. It’s been a frustrating couple of weeks on the Acoustic Mayhem front. Our last two Friday open mic shows at Westy’s have been knocked out by first the snow, then the rain. If a biblical swarm of locusts descends upon Cape May County next Friday you will know who to blame. Actually, “blame” is a strong word as I’m sure it will be a complete coincidence and nothing at all to do with those goats and pentagrams in my shed. But Will Knapp (Ding!) and I had a fun gig at the Anglesea Pub in North Wildwood last Saturday, where we played through a driving snow storm to a sparse but appre-

ciative crowd. Will downloaded all our lyric sheets onto his iPad so we no longer need our big, bulky binder. But I had a few issues navigating with all the doo-dads, which grew progressively worse and exponentially more hilarious with each passing Stoli O and club. (Hilarious to me, at least… Will’s version may differ slightly.) I’ll be back at the Anglesea on March 2 with my brother Mike so make sure you put it on your calendar to not come. Expect lots of Beatles songs. Which reminds me; Beatles! This Sunday you can catch Beatles Night, Cape May II in the Boiler Room at Congress Hall, 7pm11pm. (Bass player Terry Dougherty, please take note; if you arrive at 8 you will be pummeled.) The Love Me Dudes (the house band which, had I known we were going to play more than one show, I may have put a little more thought into the name of) will have had many, many (one) intense rehearsals by the time you read this and be supremely confident (nervous as hell) heading into the show. But I am perfectly (reasonably) confident they will dig deep into their well of

musical professionalism (booze and weed) and pull out a great (okay) performance! I kid, I kid… Terry D, Will, Mike and Al Olivero are a great group, and I’m proud to take the stage with them. As host of Beatles Night I, I was unable to sit and listen to a lot of acts; there were people to be herded, set list adjustments to be made, beers to be consumed, etc. But I popped in the fabulous DVD by Henrie Washington a few days ago and was stunned at the musicianship on display. I can’t wait to play more gigs with these guys. And this same roster (sadly, minus Terry Dougherty; happily, plus Walter Sapisi Jr) will rock the Anglesea Pub on March 30 on Billy Joel night. Details forthcoming so keep your eyes peeled. Or don’t. I get paid the same either way. Android Obsession of the Week: Candy Crush Saga. It’s… it’s a game where you… eh, just play it. Then try to stop. I’ve had a fabulous off-season of Terry O’ke at the Rio Station; crowds have been strong every Friday. While I’d love to see more Cape May faces at my Rio Station and Wildwood gigs, I realize it’s almost a 10-minute drive from where you are to come support a guy who’s given you hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of free entertainment over the years. (Sorry, I’ve tried bribes and good-natured cajoling; I shall now resort to flat-out Catholic-guilting…) Speaking of the Rio Station, I no longer fear a toxic gas attack as I have now spent several thousand hours in the corner of the bar at the Rio where people seem to hold their gaseous excretions until reaching the karaoke stage where they then feel safe to expel these elements on their unsuspecting host. This phenomenon is known as “crop dusting” and, while I understand people’s desire not to toot around their friends, it is taking a terrible toll on the help. So give a hoot. Don’t pollute. Please? I’m sure you all saw the doz-

ens of pictures from the Burns Supper last week (and zero from Beatles Night, which happened first and was by all measures a larger event, but I guess you have to know somebody, ahem) and I can personally attest to what a fine event it was. But as you also probably saw, I’m getting a little jowly these days. After seeing these photos, and enduring dozens more from Beatles Night on Facebook (and don’t even get me started on the hi-res video), I must first apologize for springing so much face on an unsuspecting public, and ensure you all that my Beatles ’stache will be a Beatles Beard by this Sunday night. But enough about me, let’s talk more about me… I am currently hard at work on my second book, another short story collection that should pair up nicely with Murder-Oke and Other Spooky Cape May Tales for the hordes of you that own it. It will feature six extensively rewritten shorts originally published in these pages, a couple of which will be unrecognizable from their original versions. I’m excited by the opportunity to go back and “fix” these tales, all of which I’m pretty proud of. And, if I can get myself in gear, I just might work on a movie this spring, just not the movie you’re thinking of… Good luck to my friends Frank Mikulak (“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”) and Kate Medvedeva Mikulak (“Let It Be”) as they take one step closer to her becoming a US citizen. If anyone doubts the authenticity of their love, I direct them to, well, ALL of the surveillance footage from Ghost Ship any time during the summer of 2011. I have spent almost every waking moment this winter (when not gigging, writing or sleeping) working on getting through The Lord of the Rings novels and I have come up with two observations; 1. Even with all my concentration and dedication I am only 360 pages in. 2. Peter Jackson did a pretty lousy job adapting the story. Look at me, 10 years late to the party! ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

OW we chortled, Young Albert, my faithful manservant Kitchener, and I, at the reaction to our mention of the fate of the Concrete Ship in last week’s column (in the interest of accuracy I should admit that Albert doesn’t chortle, as such, he just barks then wheezes until he coughs something up: this time it was a tiny cannon from my painstakingly built replica of the Golden Hind that he consumed. The little sailors he pooped out, leading to some pretty gruesome sieving work by Kitchener. What, you didn’t think they’d be abandoned? They were all painstakingly hand painted!). The telephonic device didn’t stop ringing for three days and our Morning Constitutional took three hours longer than usual because of concerned citizenry stopping us to chat about the impending relocation of the vessel to China. Well, of course, the story was a red herring, of sorts: the truth of the matter is that we were asked by the rotund rapscallion of an editor of this fine publication to divert

attention from the Navy’s survey of the area until he was ready to break the story himself. What will actually happen is that following the devastation from Sandy, our own stretch of coastline will be getting its own ocean defenses, in the shape of some 300 extra concrete ships, all of which will be towed out to sea a little and sunk with carefully calibrated drone strikes (from Cape May’s highly secret CIA base) so that any future waves will be def lected harmlessly from our fine beaches. Of course, the original Concrete Ship will be an anchor

point for this remarkable scheme, which will also boast a hotel and nine-hole golf course along the top decks of the artfully semi-submerged f leet. And that estimable ship will of course be renovated and repainted to mark the inauguration. But it will not, I assure you, be going to China as an aircraft carrier: that would be simply ludicrous, especially when one considers that the Chinese are already purchasing the fort on the beach and making it into a factory for the manufacture of iPhones and other devilish devices: special visas will be issued to the 500 tiny Oriental children who will work inside, crafting the infernal devices with their minuscule fingers and their keen little eyes. Why, if Steve Jobs were alive he’d be turning in his grave. On the plus side, residents of Cape May are to be given prototypes of the asyet-unreleased iPad Teeny, an operational tablet computer the size of a postcard. The devices will go to the first 1,000 people who turn up at the Exit Zero store a week on Monday holding their copy of this paper open at my page.

Over 200 people spent New Year’s Eve at the Ebbitt Room this year, where 500 silver and gold balloons contributed to a festive atmosphere, and pianist Paul Sottile provided entertainment. Here’s To Your Health

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

RESSING room mirrors can give one pause. All is revealed. We stand naked, pimples and dimples (not the cute kind), rolls and wrinkles. We gaze for a quick moment at someone we don’t recognize. “Where’s my six-pack, my tight butt, my beautiful contours?” and then we justify and move on, sure that we really look much different in “the real world.” But sometimes, it’s too difficult to pretend. Ruth Brant had one of those moments watching The Biggest Loser. One of the contestants was listed as having the exact same size and weight as Ruth. She thought, “Is that what I look like?” Her 254-pound frame was not something she could justify anymore. She was a mom of six kids, who kept saying that after the next baby, she would get healthy. Now her youngest was one, and there were no more on the way. Kris Lashley had a similar awakening when her aunt died from complications brought on by an infection her overweight body couldn’t fight off. Kris was

258 pounds. For Jen Hunter, it was a gradual realization. She was invited to try an exercise class, and at first, was sure it was going to be another failed attempt; but something changed. “I kept at it and actually learned to like myself,” she said. “The key was having other people accept and encourage me, just the way I was, at 216 pounds.” For Pam Hubert, it was a visit to her doctor, as a new mom, for constant fevers that did it. His prescription wasn’t formedicine, but exercise. Pam weighed 270. According to poet Rilke: “After the

final no, there comes a yes and on that yes, the future of the world hangs.” It could be said that the future of your world hangs on your final yes. ‘Attempt then fail’ is the one-two punch of weight loss. You put your hopes out there, only to be knocked to the ground again by the grim reality: diet programs don’t work. Count calories, skip meals, go gluten-free... THEY don’t work on their own. The individual must decide they’re ready to make a program work. Sometimes, food represents comfort, or fun, or happiness, or love. It can also come to represent diabetes, heart disease, and shame. The most compelling reason all of these women gave to get control of their weight is a desire to be around for their kids — games, dance recitals, birthdays. Ruth now weighs 150 pounds. She wants to become a personal trainer. Kris now weighs 156 pounds. Jen lost 45 pounds and does CrossFit, running and Olympic lifting. Pam lost 120 pounds and, according to her doctor, is in perfect health.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions

Dear Answer Lady My mom passed away last year, and I’m vacationing with my dad in Cape May this summer — just the two of us. I’m looking forward to AND dreading it at the same time. We have a tendency to butt heads, and he treats me like a kid when we disagree. I’m not sure we can make the 3-hour drive to Cape May without arguing, never mind the week sharing a hotel room. Help. — My father’s son Dear Son We can pick our friends, and we can pick our noses, but we can’t pick our friends’ noses. Wait — that is not what the Answer Lady meant. We can’t pick our family; that is what the Answer Lady meant. (And no, the Answer Lady does not condone nose-picking in any capacity.) What she DOES condone, however, is that you’re spending time

with your father. Granted, being trapped in a car with a difficult relative can be challenging (as anyone who has ever driven with the Answer Lady’s sister and a functioning car radio can attest). The key is to have a distraction or two. When planning your route, include a couple of rest stops to grab a snack, stretch your legs, call a supportive friend. While in the car, an audio book will keep conversation — and potential disagreements — to a minimum (you are on your own as to agreeing on the audio book). Try

to book a suite at one of Cape May’s many fine hotels; the Answer Lady stayed with relatives at La Mer last summer, and their efficiency was quite spacious enough for four people to stay safely out of each other’s way. Visit Cape Atlantic Books to stock up on reading material, and if things start getting tense, excuse yourself and bury your nose in a book. And finally, your father may occasionally treat you like a kid for the rest of his days; you are his kid, after all. The key is to not respond like one. Dear Answer Lady I have an acquaintance who gets right in my face while talking, and I don’t like it. How do I combat this?— Back Up Dear Backing Up You answered your own question with your signature, dear. Since it’s an acquaintance, you don’t know them well enough to even jokingly suggest that they back up (or, in the case of a stranger crowding us in line at the grocery store, to accidentally elbow him really hard in the ribs; not that the Answer Lady condones such a thing). Therefore, for every step he takes forward, take two back.

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Go antiquing INTER giving you cabin fever? Why not make your cabin fabulous? Decorate with antiques from Crafts and Antiques in Winter at

Convention Hall. Antiques are items which have value because of their age. Most collectors consider items 100 years or older “antique,” while anything more recent is “vintage” or simply “collectible.” Of course, anything originally sold as a collectible is unlikely to retain value — look at all of those Beanie Babies selling for 35 cents — but if you love it, collect it. Victorians prized their collections. They encouraged their children to collect and catalogue coins, stamps, shells or other small objects, believing that collections fostered an interest in history. Wealthy collectors travelled the world for Italian sculpture, Chinese porcelain, or Eqyptian sarcophagi,

and many donated their finds to museums. Some of these items were acquired illegally, and today’s museum directors face the challenge of repatriating plundered treasures. Experts encourage beginners to start small, focus on things that make you smile, and do research before spending big bucks. Consider your home; if you live in a cozy space, consider collecting things you can hang on a wall, like maps or artwork, or sturdy furniture you can actually use. If you love Mad Men, consider a mid-century clock or a cocktail shaker. Love boats? How about vintage signal flags. Hang vintage postcards over a doorway with clothespins and dream of your next adventure. Stack old books to make an adjustable display table. The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

ILD turkey would be a most unlikely subject for an article. Fifty years ago. There is a reason for this. Fifty years ago, nobody dreamed of turkey being part of Cape May’s avifauna. Avifauna by the way, is a fancy way of saying “bird life.” Why was this? Did people who lived in Cape May back when all the houses were white lack for imagination? Was there an embargo on turkey whimsy? No. The reason nobody dreamed about turkey (except perhaps in late November) was because half a century ago wild turkeys were not found in Cape May. In fact, they could hardly be found in the state. Now they are everywhere. A real comeback kid. Even if the comeback was a long time coming. It turns out that wild turkey was one of the very first birds officially recorded on the Cape May bird list. In the 1640s, a ship’s officer, Master Eveland noted “stores of turkeys,” on the peninsula and “tried one to weigh 46

pounds.” How about that. Turkey made the list before Cape May Warbler. In the “History of the Colony of Nova Caesarea” (aka New Jersey) the author, writing in 1765, observes that “there are a great plenty of Wild Turkeys.” By 1825, Charles Bonaparte in his update of American Ornithology notes that he is “credibly informed that Wild Turkeys are yet to be found in the mountainous districts

of Sussex County, New Jersey”. According to David Fables, author of Annotated List of New Jersey Birds, by 1840 the species was “extirpated” from New Jersey. As to why the bird declined, you need look no further for a cause than the holiday that celebrates the birds epicurean attributes. Mmmmm. Yes, please. But loss of habit was as much a contributing factor to the birds decline as focused appetite. The turkey is a bird of forest and grassy park habitat. They have a particular fondness for mast (e.g. acorns, chestnuts...). When you cut down forests of mast bearing trees, you cut the heart out of the Wild Turkey’s world. Or maybe “crop.” The way to a turkey’s stomach is through its crop. So for something like a century, wild turkey were as common as leprechauns and unicorns in the Garden State. But by the 1950s, efforts to restore the birds in Eastern Pennsylvania were initiated. The first modern record for New Jersey was in Wallpack, Sus-

The first attempt to restore birds in Cape May County was in 1980 in Belleplain State Forest. But the bird remained uncommon throughout the state until about the late 80s when... Wham! The populations exploded. Suddenly the turkeys were everywhere. Why? Certainly the restocking efforts of the Wild Turkey Federation deserve praise. But not to recognize the impact of forest regeneration leaves half the story untold. Today, in Cape May, there is a lot of forest and growing numbers of Wild Turkey. In nearby Cumberland County, the birds are tantamount to vermin. Heck, a couple of days ago I stopped to count a flock foraging in a snow-covered field near Port Norris and came up with 244. A total worthy of Master Eveland! Although I cannot say whether any birds in the several flocks were in the 46-pound class. So, there you have it. The story of the return of the wild turkey. We called Billy D. Light to see why his band, the Billy D. Light Trio, loves playing the Boiler Room. “The ambiance is amazing,” he said. We also asked why his website — billyDlight. com — calls this the “last” rock and roll band. “Because nobody plays like we do,” he told us. “Everything else pales in comparison.” That’s quite a statement, we responded. “I’m quite a guy,” he said... a guy whose middle name, in case you’re wondering what the D stands for, is Damien. “The name speaks to my deep and moving soul,” Billy told us.
