6/21: Mermaid Guild Dinner At The YB Eat Place
«
THE Mermaid Guild of Cape May was rescued by the generosity of Peter Karapanagiotis of The Y.B. Eat Place. At the fourth annual King Neptune Bachelor Auction last year, the guild raffled off, for $600, a Chef’s Demo dinner for six people at a local restaurant. After the chef in question went AWOL, the Guild were forced to consider returning the money — tricky since they are non-profit and donate proceeds to Community Foodbank of South Jersey. Luckily, there was an angel waiting in the wings. “I was in Y.B. having dinner and Peter sat down to chat with us,” says Pat Jackson of the Mermaid Guild. “I tell him the story and he says without a second of hesitation, ‘I’ll do it’. I can’t believe how quick he was to make this offer. It’s then that I realize what a great town we live in.” The dinner was held on Friday, June 21. You’re a good man, Peter.

Talk Of The Town
RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS
For The Love Of Art
Remembering Paul Mathis... a teacher who inspired students and colleagues at Lower Cape May Regional HS.
A Legend Lives On The following tribute to Paul Mathis, a teacher at Lower Cape May Regional High School who passed away last week, was written by Chris Jay, a former pupil at LCMR and lead singer of the Ventura, California rock band, Army of Freshmen who will be headlining The Concert For Mr Mathis on Saturday, July 13 at Lower Cape May Regional. I ALWAYS envisioned Mr Mathis as an Indiana Jones type. By day he kept his identity secret as a mild-mannered English teacher, but as soon as that last bell rang he was off on some fantastic adventure, barely making it back in time for school the next morning. Not that I imagined him spending his off hours melting Nazi faces with an Ark of the Covenant death ray, per se, but I always had a sneaking suspi-
cion there was more to the man than meets the eye. And how could there not have been? Mr Mathis’ consummate taste in the arts, throwback literary cool and overall passion towards life in general couldn’t be fueled by just teaching at a small-town high school and running the drama department. Could it? No, in my mind, a man like that just had to have some kind of secret life. Or maybe he was just in hiding. That was always a distinct possibility. One could easily imagine him on the lam from a vengeful Third World dictator whose rule was overthrown when a Mathis-penned play inspired a nation into action. You could totally see him in a Casablanca-worthy scene, standing by the rickety propellers of a small plane, about to
be smuggled out of his native country forever — but not before having a poetic goodbye with the beautiful woman he had to leave behind. And maybe it was that same woman that Mr Mathis was thinking about on those rainy winter mornings as he looked out into the woods from his classroom, those times when he grew quiet and seemed to disappear to a sadder place. All those scenarios, of course, didn’t match up with what I actually knew of the man. With my dad and Mr Mathis starting their teaching careers at Lower Cape May Regional High School roughly around the same time, and becoming good friends in the process, Mr Mathis was a prominent figure in some of my earliest memo-

LAST Christmas, we wrote about the 63 homeless children who have benefited thus far from the work of Family Promise, the non-profit which seeks to provide shelter for families who’ve lost their homes in participating houses of worship. Unlike traditional shelters, which might need to break families apart, Family Promise seeks to keep all members together. Since we wrote our story, the organization has moved into a new headquarters location — where families can shower, do laundry, store personal belongings, and prepare each day to leave for their designated house of worship — at 505 Townbank Road. And they’ve also prepared a very exciting event, an art auction exclusively presenting the work of Robert R. Roehrenbeck. Robert’s work has been shown at such big-name venues as the Tyler Museum of Art, and as part of the US Department Embassies Collection. Now, you’ll be able to see it at Cape May Winery this Sunday, June 30 from 5-8pm. All proceeds benefit Family Promise. For more info, call 609-846-7862.
The Camp Your Kid Will Love... DON’T forget about Cape May’s summer youth day camp for children ages four to 12, which includes outdoor education, arts and crafts, storytelling, sports, nature, local walking excursions, parachute games, pool days, and beach trips. Camp runs from June 24 to August 16 and convenes daily either at the Kiwanis Park on Madison Avenue, Cape May Convention Hall or the Franklin Street Civic Center gym in Cape May. It lasts from 9am to 3pm with before and after-are available. For information, call 609-884-9565 or pick up an application at capemayrecreation.org.

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 ries. During rehearsals for the school musical, while my dad conducted the pit orchestra, I sat in the dark theater, juice box and Star Wars action figures in hand, taking it all in with awe. To the six-year-old version of myself, Mr Mathis seemed, in charge of all those actors, musicians and dancers, beyond important. There was an energy he put off I couldn’t quite understand, but I knew it was different and I was fascinated by it. Not to mention, by the strict guidelines of international kid law, any adult who wears a hat inside a building can be trusted and admired. By the time I actually attended high school, I was excited to take his class and it was everything I’d hoped for. Mr Mathis introduced me to so many important things in my life, from my favorite musical artist, Arlo Guthrie, to my
favorite author, Kurt Vonnegut. His taste was always impeccable and he seemed to have insider info on all the really cool people, places and things in the world. More than that, though, he made you feel as if you could be part of it all. You didn’t have to be an outsider looking in. Never was his energy and inspiration more evident than on the nights of the musicals and plays that he produced, which were on a level far beyond the typical high school production. Forget Broadway or Hollywood, somehow Mr Mathis made it feel like the entire center of the creative universe was in that South Jersey high school auditorium. Waiting to go on stage with a pinch of his magical mojo dust tucked into your shoe, you felt like you were a part of something special, and more so, that you were special. At least that’s how Mr Mathis made me feel, and I know I was just one of hundreds, if not thousands, of people who, in one way or another,
were also made to feel this way. And now he’s gone. I knew it was cancer and I knew it was the hopeless kind. I was prepared for it and my heart went out to his family. We immediately started working on an event to celebrate his life while he was still with us. I wanted so desperately for him to be there, to have all those people he touched in the same room, but it wasn’t meant to be. When he was told about the concert that his former students and friends were planning for him, shortly before he passed away, Mr Mathis was moved to tears. Knowing he was touched by the idea is enough. Especially because I know that he’ll still be there. He’s not really gone. It’s impossible for him to be gone because he’s kept alive by the same thing he gave to so many people, over so many years, in so many ways… love. Love keeps you alive as much as air or water does.

Ode To A Mentor
The following tribute to Conrad Briant — former Electrical Department Director for Cape May County who passed away on May 28 — was submitted to us by Curtis Bashaw, General Managing Partner of Cape Resorts. I FIRST met Conrad Briant in the flooded boiler pit of Congress Hall’s basement just before Memorial Day, 1982. I had recently been installed as the hotel’s general manager that season by my grandfather, Carl McIntire. I cant remember now who referred me to Conrad, but I had called 884-4050 to solicit help fixing the hotel’s decrepit and broken hot water heater. It was late at night and guests were arriving the next day. On the other end of the line I heard a grumble that sounded like a chuckle: “I’ll be right there, young man.” Two seconds later the blue truck pulled into the driveway. As I followed him down to the basement he was
If you’re loved — you’re alive. And no one was, or is, more alive than Paul Mathis. See you in the front row, maestro. As for the theory of a double life of espionage and intrigue, although I know better, I’m still not completely ruling it out. Knowing Mr Mathis, I think he’d prefer it that way. The Concert For Mr Mathis, on Saturday, July 13 at Lower Cape May Regional, also features Adam Mcdonough, Old School, Stellar Mojo and special guests. Tickets for the all ages event are available at Mr J’s Music Shop, online at www. mathisconcert.com or at the door on the night of the concert. All proceeds from the event go towards Mr. Mathis’ Family and the Love of Linda Cancer Fund. already lecturing me. While he sat and tinkered with the electrical components, Conrad proceeded to tell me that Congress Hall was the most important building in Cape May and that I had to promise him that I wouldn’t let anything happen to that building. I made that promise right there in the basement. After an hour or two and a couple quick runs back to his North Street home for a part or gadget, the old boiler fired up. But the real legacy of that night was having met a man who became like a second father and mentor to me as I began what became my career in Cape May. Conrad took me under his wing, introducing me to the local leadership in town. “Come on kid, we are going to the C-View,” he would say. I remember meeting Barney Dougherty and Bill Bezaire there. When I started working on the Virginia Hotel project he offered me strategic advice about politics and the town.
When things didn’t go well he would offer that gruff laugh of his, telling me to toughen up — things will work out. Conrad was always there to help. He nursed our finicky fire systems and helped ameliorate the fire department after Congress Hall’s then-leaky roof triggered yet another false alarm. But what he really did was undergird my resolve with his — by showing up with that blue truck when no one else was around, late at night to help a discouraged kid stay on course with a shared vision of seeing Congress Hall restored one day. After his memorial service at the West Cape May fire hall the other week, I stopped at Congress Hall and walked out on that lawn and looked back at that illuminated, alive hotel. Standing there, looking at that colonnade and the rockers, the building became blurry; the tears had found their way. But what was

Surf’s Up
MAYBE you’ve seen Shark Tank, the Emmy-nominated ABC show that features budding entrepreneurs pitching ideas — for everything from squirrelshocking bird feeders, burger trucks manned by sexy women, and eyewear made of sustainable wood — to billionaire tycoons (aka, sharks) who can choose to invest in these grassroots efforts, or pass on the opportunity. A past contender is a man by the name of Mike Hartwick, who played professional ice hockey overseas and spent his off-seasons surfing in California. When it came time to forgo his board and once again focus
on in-the-gym training sessions, he missed the lean physique surfing afforded him. This was the incentive for creating his Surfset Fitness company, which produces surf simulating machines… think surfboards meant for the indoors that mimic the movements of an in-thewater stick, and allow a person to mimic the movements of an in-the-water surfer. One of the Shark Tank moguls, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, took the bait and became an investor, but he wasn’t the only one to take notice. Enter Judy Heany of Balance Pilates and Yoga Studio on Park Boulevard in West Cape May, which will offer semi-private Surfset classes beginning on a yet-to-be determined date in July (the equipment is still en route to Cape Island). “It’s really fun and really cool,” she told us. “And it’s the kind of workout that makes boredom difficult, because you’re constantly being challenged.” Judy, a Philadelphia native

who suffers from a curvature of the spine, scoliosis, became certified in yoga and pilates instruction as a way to combat her diagnosis. After meeting her husband in Cape May, she spent four years in the Caribbean, teaching yoga and pilates at the Caneel Bay resort in Saint John — a vacation spot for Michael J. Fox, Metallica, and Kevin Bacon — and the Ritz Carlton in Saint Thomas. In 2005, she grew homesick and returned to Cape May (“The beaches are even better here for taking long, meditative walks”), where she opened Balance. Recently, a client of Judy’s from North Jersey mentioned that she’d been thinking about investing in Surfset, and that it might be a good fit in Cape May. Judy looked it up, and began taking lessons in it herself at a studio in Seaville, where it was love at first, um, plank. “There is so much you can do with this,” she said, “like conditioning for surfing, or working on balance by doing yoga moves
on the board, straight-up core strengthening for the full body, and also cardio, by using it as a step platform.” As for what you can expect to do at Balance? “To start, we’re going to stick with what we’re best at,” Judy said. “Yoga and pilates.” There will be three Surfsetcertified instructors to help you get your feet wet (on dry land), including Andrea Magda, who you might recognize from the yoga classes she teaches on stand up paddleboards on the harbor; surfer/former physical education teacher Lonnie Johnson; and Judy. Classes are $30 each, and open to people of all ages — anyone who wants to improve core strength and balance. “I am excited to offer this,” Judy said. “It’s one more way to help people feel better in their bodies and about their bodies.” For more information, check out balancecapemay.com or call 609-884-3001.

The Fabric Of Your Life

Historic Cold Spring Village hosts the 28th Annual Cape May Quilt and Fiber Show
ISTORIC Cold Spring Village — a non-profit, openair living history museum that portrays the daily life of a rural South Jersey community of the Early American period — is featuring all things fiber arts at the 28th annual Cape May Quilt and Fiber Show, Saturday and Sunday, June 29-30. Sponsored by the Chatlos Foundation, the event will be held from 10am until 4:30pm both days and will feature demonstrations and vendors of quilting, textiles, knitting, crocheting, lace making, basket weaving, broom making and more. Visitors are invited to take part in a “yarn bombing,” the newest expression of public art, which will be held at the Village Gazebo. Guests are encouraged to knit or crochet a section. On Saturday, visitors may vote for their favorite quilts in the Welcome Center at the Viewer’s Choice Quilt Show, and on Sunday continue to enjoy the display and see the winners. A rare wedding quilt, circa 1714, handmade by Cape May Countian Sarah Spicer, will be on display in the Welcome
Experience live quilting demonstrations at Historic Cold Spring Village. Center for its annual appearance. The quilt was restored in 2012 through a grant from the Cape May County Culture and Heritage Commission. Yesteryear Quilters, in period clothing, will present a ‘hand-turning’ of 19th century quilting techniques at the Gazebo. Regional vendors are attending with quilting and sewing fabrics, yarn, baskets, supplies, and equipment to help inspire the creation of an heirloom project. If you would like to learn
some new skills, Kathe Cressman will share some tips and tricks for knitters on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Seasoned knitters and newcomers to the craft will learn from these discussions. Opened in 2012, the Needle Arts Coop, located in the Villages Octagonal House, serves as a learning center for interactive lessons and information on handmade crafts and skills. The Village is located on Route 9, three miles north of Victorian Cape May and a mile and a half west of the southern terminus of the Garden State Parkway. Admission during the season is $10 for adults and $8 for children ages 3 to 12. Children under 3 are admitted free. Unlimited free admission is available with Village membership. The Village Nature Trail at Bradner’s Run is open to the public for free self-guided tours. Visit the Country Store, Needle Arts Coop, Bakery, Ice Cream Parlor and Cold Spring Grange Restaurant. For more information on events, membership, volunteering, or booking private affairs, please call 609898-2300, extension 10.

Matt, orginally from New York, spent summers growing up in Cape May — what his mother calls his “real claim to fame” — hence the T-shirt. “It’s his most favorite place,” she says. Way to go, Matt!

Choices for lunch with a friend:
#1 No view (unless you consider the parking
lot a view). The usual menu of burgers, salads, wraps and lots (lots) of fried stuff. Nothing to do when you’re finished except get back to your car before the meter runs out.
#2 Wow! Look at the view! A Victorian
mansion, beautiful lawns and gardens, even an herb garden a few steps from your table. A varied menu...cafe fare to an elegant Tea Luncheon, with unique salads, signature sandwiches and desserts to make you give up dieting. After lunch? Stroll the grounds, visit the museum shop or see the latest exhibit in the gallery. There’s no rush to get anywhere, because the parking is free.

The Old Fogey
W
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
E HAVE decided to outlaw sunburn within the city boundaries. It was not a hard decision to make: I have long held that bodies are beautiful in every color nature and genetic determination makes them, so long as they are not bright red and burning. Back in My Day, before sunblock and ozone and all that fancy kind of talk, we used to have to lie out on sheets of aluminum foil until the sun went down or the smell of crisping bacon rising off our bodies grew too strong to abide, and we would then retire to a bath full of butter to soothe the agony. One had to stay indoors for 48 hours after, until the initial scarlet turned to a mahogany brown, and of course there was the thick layer of skin flakes to vacuum off the floor, but all in all, a small price to pay. But times change. And now some very smart people insist that we not only cover ourselves in sunblock but our pets, too, and farm animals, and even insects we have grown fond of. Certainly I have gone to
great pains, and in fact great pain, to ensure Young Albert has a daub of Factor 100 on the end of his nose and his lips before we leave the house. Before you scoff, I advise YOU to attempt to apply sunblock to the biting end of a Yorkshire Terrier — we have to use strong leather gauntlets and the promise of a steak dinner to get the task done, and that is only what my faithful manservant Kitchener requires in order to assist me. Young Albert himself cannot be bribed, unless it involves a hall pass to savage Wildwooders at will,
and we are trying to leave those dark days behind, no matter how much fun they might have been... Anyway, a sunproofed but raging Albert and myself were taking our morning constitutional last week, under a blue sky. I was shaded under a wide-brimmed hat, and the only flesh on show was the strip between my starched cuff and my sovereign rings. We were carrying a bottle of Factor 1000, with which to spray those beached bodies that were edging toward magenta. Suddenly we came across what I assumed at first was a giant peeled tomato, or a scarlet weather balloon fallen to earth, but in fact turned out to be a roaring burning Scotchman. Well, we used up our half gallon spray without doing more than making him sizzle, and in the end had to stun him with a kid’s beach shovel (it took several hundred blows) and heap sand over him until the sun went down. I have no idea whether he lived or died, but the sight was so horrific that laws had to be passed to prevent anyone else having to witness such a horror.

Looking From Lower
Local heroes, happenings, and a few heckles ... a monthly column by Lower Township Deputy Mayor Norris Clark
W
HEN 1,000 athletes jumped off the Cape MayLewes Ferry for the first annual “Escape the Cape” Triathlon, and came upon our shore, we all saw the Ferry Terminal and Lower Township in a new light — as a major new event venue. The triathlon had many winners that day including the winning partnership between event promoter, the DRBA and Lower Township. Going forward, we can expect to see a growing roster of events including larger concerts, wine and beer festivals, and other major sporting events. (see the Triathlon video at Facebook. com/LowerTownship), Local Heroes We’ll celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks on July 3, but not without remembering our good-as-they-get “Friends of Lower Township” Gold sponsors including Jeff Reichle of Lund’s Fisheries and Daniel Cohen of Atlantic Capes Fisheries. These gentlemen not only make their businesses available for the fireworks setup, they generously contribute to these recre-
ational events, while contributing mightily to the economy. As school closes for summer, an outstanding career comes to a close; Jack Pfizenmayer retires as Superintendent of Lower Cape May Regional High School. We’ll be honoring Jack at Township hall as we hail Chris Kobik, stepping up as the new Superintendent, and carry on his tradition of building community support for our students. Speaking of community support for our
students, we also thank Marguerite Chandler and Richmond Shreve for their generous contribution to the Lower Township Elementary Educational Fund in support of our early childhood education program. Happenings The Friends of Fishing Creek School have teamed with the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities again this year to offer FREE food and musical programs on three Fridays this summer at the historic Fishing Creek Schoolhouse located on Bayshore Road in the Villas across from Dominoes Pizza. The musical program started off with American Patriotic Music on Friday, June 21 and will continue with Music of the Civil War Era on Friday July 12, at 6pm; and Down Memory Lane (WWII to Doo Wop), Friday August 9, at 6pm. A Few Heckles The triathlon safely came and went, and not a heckle was heard! Be sure to send any heroes, happenings or heckles to me at: norrisclark@me.com. Until next time, happy Fourth of July, Lower Township!

Here’s To Your Health
I
A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club
N THE world of fitness and fitness competitions the outlier sports are often the most interesting and perplexing. Polo, for instance, is wickedly hard (I’m told), and insular (the closest most of us will get is wearing the brand), and dangerous. You have to be a damn good athlete to participate. Dog Sledding is shared by a small, committed group, in the bitter cold, often in the dark. What would possess someone, anyone, to attempt these types of sports? You would expect these men and women to be incredibly head strong and a bit different from the rest of us. This perfectly describes our own Al Famiano of Villas. Al likes to move weight. He doesn’t “lift weight” he dominates weight. At age 36, standing 5’5” and weighing around 242 pounds, he is ranked 44th in the world in power lifting. He does three lifts: Squat — 860 pounds, Bench — 735 pounds, and dead lift — 635 pounds, for a total of 2,225! There are numerous federations (over 50) all doing their own meets. I asked why there are so many. “They have trouble getting along,” Al said. (Imagine that.) With so many groups actively pursuing the sport
you might expect the gymnasiums to be overflowing with these characters, but that’s not the case. “No one wants to watch a bunch of fat people lifting weights.” (Al said that, not me!) So the meets aren’t usually televised and it’s looked on by the “body-building” crowd with an attitude of, “Yea, they’re strong but I look better.” Fair enough, but as Al demonstrates to anyone brave enough to step into his homegym in his garage, “Show Ain’t Go”. “Pretty boys don’t last long.” (Hear that Dylan?) We need to step back a bit and explain the use of “gear” which involves squeezing your arms or arms and legs into thick canvas shirts or jump suit-like clothing. I tried a
COME CHECK OUT ALL OF OUR NEW DESIGNS!
the flying fish studio 130 park blvd west cape may
couple of the “shirts” on and it felt like a steel belted radial tire with holes cut in it. The gear restricts your range of motion and holds your arms in what feels like an impossible position while you lie under hundreds of pounds on a bench and try to come up with a good excuse to run away. I always thought the shirts were cheating and you can do a lot more weight with one on but now I see they are a tool; a difficult one to master. An example: Al’s bench weight in a shirt is 735 pounds; without, or Raw, it’s 435 pounds. So the sport of powerlifting absolutely involves way more than just simply pushing or pulling iron. It requires years of practice, persistence and pain. “I’m always stiff and in pain somewhere on my body,” he said as he groaned getting into a Sumo squat. “It takes me a while just to warm up.” I wanted him to demonstrate how wide his legs are spread when he lifts 860 pounds off the floor.. they’re as big and strong as many NFL guys. To follow Al and his lifting partner Mike Crowley, go to YouTube and search for his videos. And if you are interested in putting some “go” behind your “show” he is always looking for little Als to train.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady, I’ve had two dates with a girl I really like: we went to Tisha’s for lunch last week, and yesterday we went to the beach. That’s where I noticed her tattoo. I’m pretty sure my parents will freak out if they see it. We’re both 18 years old, by the way. I like her and I plan to keep seeing her, but should I give the parentals a heads-up, or just wait until they notice it themselves? It’s on her shoulder blade, so even a tank top will pretty much give it away. — The Good Son Dear Good Son First, the Answer Lady would like to commend you for trying to protect your poor, fragile parents. As the mother of an eight-year-old son, the Answer Lady shudders to think what kind of condition she will be in by the time he reaches 18. But she digresses.
The Answer Lady sees no reason why you should break this news to your parents... Unless, of course, they have a virulent and long-standing hatred of tattoos, or administer a “We Hate Tattoos” Facebook page or some such nonsense. Get to know this young lady and see what happens. Perhaps she’ll dump you tomorrow. Perhaps you’ll date for years and your parents will grow quite fond of her before seeing her tattoo, and then realize how silly it is to judge a person for such a thing.

The Movie Column
W
This week, Arts Editor Tom Sims tells us all about the 2013 Cape May Film Camp
E have two special events coming up this week, and you will want to join us! First is the screening of the movies from the 2013 Cape May Film Camp, a FREE event, on Friday, June 28, at 7pm at the West Cape May Borough Hall, 732 Broadway. The second event is the screening of the 2007 award-winning film, Amazing Grace, which tells the story of William Wilberforce’s quest to end the British transatlantic slave trade. The film will screen on Sunday, June 30, 8:30pm at East Lynne Theater (First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street, Cape May). Tickets for the show are $10 and available at eastlynnetheater.org or calling 609884-5898. Film Camp is truly a busy week! Some have asked what happens at camp, and it goes like this: On Monday, we spend time determining the interest of the campers, teaching the fundamentals of story and character development as well as filmmaking techniques, and the kids start on their
with
Some shots from previous student films. stories. This is the most exciting time, ideas are flowing—the crazy ones along with the ones that will finally make it on screen. No idea is out of bounds to start! During our discussion of what makes a great film, we emphasize that story is the invention — characters are the inspiration! You cannot have one without the other! Characters developed by teams for stories need to be age-appropriate (sorry, teenagers cannot play the President of the United
RIDE MARK
States). The story needs to be compelling but it also must be “doable” in one week and within very certain limitations. By Tuesday, campers have “pitched” their ideas to faculty. We never judge the teams too harshly, but we must keep them focused on a film they can actually make a film that an audience will appreciate. And yes, there will likely be more than one zombie flick pitched before the day is out. Teams get busy writing their stories and determining actors. By Tuesday, the more enthused teams will be out shooting! By Wednesday, everyone is “on the street.” If you see a bunch of kids running around acting out and putting it all on camera — yeah, that’s probably one of our teams! This year they’ll have a little slip of paper to hand you to invite you to the screening! Thursday and Friday: There is much editing and maybe a little angst! But that’s what the film camp teaches — to rise above that angst to create something as a team. Join us Friday night, June 28, and prepare to be impressed!

Activity Of The Week
I
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Take A Tiny Cruise
F YOU love to look out at the water from the shores of Cape May, you may love to look out at those shores from the water. Take a ride on the Tiny Cruise Line and find out whether you are seaworthy. Steamboats are as American as apple pie, but it was a Scot who started it all. James Watt first patented a workable steam engine in 1769. Later, in 1787, an American named John Fitch used a similar design to power a boat on the Delaware River, but he was a better inventor than he was a businessman. Robert Fulton earned the title of “father of steam navigation” when his Clermont — the first passenger steamboat to turn a profit — carried passengers along the Hudson River between New York City and Albany at the breakneck speed of five miles per hour. By 1823, there were 300 steamboats in North America. They may have kicked off the Industrial Revolution, but none of those steamboats could have been as cute as Fancy, a tiny boat currently cruising Cape May Harbor.
• • • •
Fancy, the adorable Tiny Cruise Line Fancy is a small, riverboat-style vessel that can take you on a harbor tour. The boat seats about 12 passengers who ride facing each other, and is topped with a surrey-like canopy. You’ll be torn between pretending you’re Curly and Laurey in Oklahoma or Bogart and Hepburn in The African Queen. Going on a Tiny Cruise will give you a taste of adventure on calm waters. It’s a great choice if you’re bringing tiny people to Cape May, as the ride is short (less than two

hours) and perfect for kids (or adults) who worry about seasickness. With changes in wildlife and weather, each trip is unique. Cruises are $20 per person and depart at 11:30am, 1:30pm and 4pm. Times are subject to change, and reservations are suggested for large parties or special events, so call ahead. Heck, call ahead for a small party, too, as this charming newcomer to Cape May is bound to increase in popularity as word spreads. In addition to providing a new perspective on Cape May, the Tiny Cruise Line also offers a water shuttle service. You get to enjoy the sunset over the water, or enjoy the romance of the harbor by night. Call 609-602-1118 and you can arrange a ride to and from (or pretty darn near) the Lobster House, Harbor View, Two Mile Inn, Osprey Landing, Harbor Cove and the Corinthian Yacht Club. You know you’ve always wanted to arrive by boat, and at $5 per person per ride, it’s an affordable way to make your evening memorable. Make a splash — treat yourself to a Tiny Cruise. ZEKE is a three-year-old lab and shepherd mix currently residing at the shelter. He’s a fun-loving boy who can at times be on the boisterous side, but that’s just because he loves to play. Because of his size and power, he must go to a home with older children, but that’s just because of his exuberance and zest for life! If you think Zeke could fit into your life, please come meet him today. The adoption fee is $95.
«
GERONIMO is a smart one-year-old pit bull terrier who came to the shelter as a stray. He is a dark chocolate brown with white markings and a muscular body, and he has an exceptionally sweet temperament. He loves going on long walks, and especially loves being scratched behind the ears. He would thrive in a home with older children. Please consider giving Geronimo a home in your heart. His adoption fee is only $10!

Now that she has graduated, Penny is waiting eagerly for someone to take her to her new home. If you are interested in this welltrained, eager-to-please pup, why not visit her at the shelter? Her adoption fee is $95.
