Talk Of The Town

RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS

Beware The Bike Thieves! WE HAVE been hearing reports of stolen bikes, which is all-too common this time of year. Be sure to buy a lock next time you get the chance, folks... it’s a small price to pay for being in beautiful Cape May, where crime is little.

Give It A Go... WE HAVE also been hearing reports about how fun the new jet boat at East Coast Parasail is. Experience a 45-55-minute ride on the ocean and harbor aboard the fastest and only true New Zealand-style jet boat on the East Coast that can opearte in the Atlantic. It’s powered by twin, supercharbed diesel 600-horsepower engines, so you know you’re in for a wild time. The boat departs every 90 minutes from Utsch’s Marina.

Anything You Want To Tell Us? DO YOU know a Cape Mayan who has done something exceptional? Or maybe you’ve done something worth talking about? Drop us a line at info@exitzero. us.

Happy Fourth!

Declan Smith (right) with his little brother Cormac — Declan, like Exit Zero, turned 10 this year!

We’re 10 Years Old! By Jack Wright, Editor/Publisher AS DAYS in history go, July 4, 2003 wasn’t exactly jam-packed with headline-grabbing events. There was a tape purporting to be of Saddam Hussein broadcast on Al Jazeera, marking the first public communication from the former Iraqi leader since his disap-

pearance, early on in the invasion of Iraq. In the world of sports, Barry Bonds hit his 25th home run of the season, edging closer to equaling the 63-year-old record of Jimmie Foxx by becoming the second player in Major League Baseball to hit at least 30 home runs in 12 consecutive seasons. And singer Barry White, renowned for his super-sexy lush

baritone and lyrics, died of kidney failure at the age of 58. Overall, it would have gone down as a fairly unremarkable 24 hours in the annals of American life... except for the fact that at around 5pm that day a wellknown local bartender from Philadelphia called Jimmy Quinn

Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Kate Walder of Montgomery Village, MD. How long have you been coming to Cape May? I’ve been going to Cape May for about 72 years. My family always spent the summers there, and my father was born there. My sister was almost born there. Oh and by the way, my sister happens to be last week’s subscriber! What do you like about it? That’s an easy one, I like the beach the most. What’s your favorite place? Well the beach, of course! Least favorite thing about Cape May? The parking situation is my least favorite thing about Cape May... I know everybody says that, but it’s true. What is your favorite restaurant? I like the Black Duck on Sunset, Tisha’s, and the Rusty Nail. And your favorite store? My favorite store has got to be Wanderlust. What do you like about Exit Zero? I like a lot of things about Exit Zero. But I especially like the articles that you write about what’s happening in City Hall. What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? Nothing, not a thing. I’ve got no complaints. What’s your T-shirt size? Extra-large. Want to join our army of subscribers — there are hundreds of them in nearly 30 states! Call us on 609-770-8479 or buy one online at ezstore.us. It’s $50 for all 47 BW issues PLUS our six color issues.

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above. Admittedly, we are being especially difficult this week — this photograph features the founding members of Exit Zero, pictured shortly after the magazine launch 10 years ago. The bar no longer looks like this, and that’s all the clue you are getting. Apologies, especially, to reader Sebastian Maylight, who wrote to us last week complaining that this contest was beginning to “scrape the barrel”. Actually, Sebastian, we’re just trying to change it up a little. If you think you know the place this place, you could win a gift certificate for a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for instructions on how to enter at facebook. com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 pulled up at the main entrance to Congress Hall in a beat-up late 1980s white Ford Escort station wagon and started unloading around 500 copies of a little newsprint magazine called Exit Zero. As Jimmy (who at the time worked as a bartender at the Ebbitt Room but devoted one day a week to delivering Exit Zero) piled neat bundles against the yellow brick wall of Cape May’s famous old hotel, people came swooping in from all angles to grab copies. It was a very satisfying moment for me as I stood watching along with two other men who were key members of that startup operation — David Gray, a Scottish journalist I had known since 1990 who was taking a vacation in

Cape May; and Maciek Nabrdalik, a young Polish student who was working as a lifeguard at Congress Hall swimming pool by day and taking photographs for Exit Zero by night. Everywhere Jimmy Quinn went that evening he was greeted with pure enthusiasm and excitement, which made me think that maybe, just maybe, this thing had a chance of actually working. Later that night, the four of us — me, David, Maciek and Jimmy — celebrated the launch of Exit Zero with a few drinks at the Ugly Mug. We may also have gone on to celebrate with a few drinks at Martini Beach and Cabanas. I do (very vaguely) recall downing way too many pints of vodka and Red Bull with Maciek one night at Cabanas, and then cycling home in a thunderstorm. Ah, those

were the days. But enough of those drunken tales. During those early days, I had no idea that this magazine, which started out at just 24 pages, would grow into an even more influential publication than The New York Times and Time magazine combined. Or maybe I’m just a little sleep-deprived right now — it’s been an intense few weeks here at Exit Zero Global Headquarters. I’m very proud of many things that have happened during these past 10 years, and I will name a few. The aforementioned Maciek has gone from shooting photos of people hanging out at the bars and on the beach to becoming a photographer of real international standing. He routinely wins national pho-

will be selling the book on our online store, www.ezstore.us. Another one of the founding fathers of Exit Zero, David Gray, came to stay with me in Cape May for a week in the spring of 2003, and ended up hanging around for five months, helping me to launch the magazine, falling in love with a woman (who was also visiting from Scotland and who would bear him two children) and penning a column, The Old Fogey, which has appeared in, I think, every single issue, which is remarkable. I’ve also been excited to publish books by writers who made their debuts in these pages. Terry O’Brien began writing the Undertow column in 2004, and then followed up with a collection of fine short stories which, in 2008, turned into the compilation Murder-Oke! And Other Spooky Cape May Tales, which was featured in the Philadelphia Inquirier and National Public Radio.

tography awards in his native Poland, appears on current affair TV shows there and was also recruited by one of the best photographic agencies in the world, VII, based in New York. He has gone on to shoot remarkable stories that include a chilling portfolio of life (if you can call it that) in the exclusion zone at Chernobyl. And later this month he will be releasing a book called The Irreversible that has attracted international attention. The book features haunting photographs of survivors of the Nazi death camps, along with interviews conducted by Maciek’s wife Agnieszka Kuliawak. The CNN website has already published a preview of the book, as has the influential website Slate. So you can imagine how excited I was when Maciek asked if we would be interested in publishing the book. To say I’m proud doesn’t even begin to cut it. We

From Page 16 Ben Miller parlayed his weekly history column into The First Resort, a wonderful coffee table book which has gone on to sell, so far, nearly 9,000 copies, which is remarkable for a locally published book. Diane Stopyra started writing two columns for us in 2010 — The Customer Service column, about her adventures as a waitress at The Ebbitt Room, and The Dating Column, about her (lack of) adventures as a single young woman in Cape May. Diane did a fantastic job writing The Essential Lucky Bones Cookbook, which has been a hot seller since we published it last year. She joined us on staff last year and doesn’t get anywhere near the credit she deserves for single-handedly producing this magazine every week, including writing Talk of the Town in every issue. Diane is way too talented for me to hang on to and will be taking a half-step away from Exit Zero as she pursues a career writing feature stories for national magazines. I’m glad to say she will still be writing for the magazine every week and especially for our color issues, for which she has contributed some stellar pieces. I also need to pay tribute to Aleksey Moryakov, who started shooting for us in

2005 and who has gone on to become one of the hardest-working and best-known people in town. I have no idea how Aleksey can retain that beaming smile everywhere he goes, but I am very glad that he does. I can’t think of a better ambassador for this magazine. The man who oils the machine every week and brings in the advertisers is Jason Black, the most organized and reliable colleague a person could ask for. As we’ve grown from a little mag to a big mag, opening three retail stores along the way, and experimenting with publications in other towns (few of which worked), Jason has had to do a lot of adapting and gear-changing. I’ve never worked with any single person as long as I’ve worked with him (it’s been nearly nine years) so we must be doing something right together. Like any long-term partners, we have our moments, our spats and our disagreements, mainly because we have practically nothing in common except for Exit Zero and a fondness for stupid jokes. But I hope it’s a partnership that lasts a long time. Okay, this is starting to sound like one of those boring, endless Oscar speeches, where they fret that there are important people they’ve forgotten to mention, and there are, no question about it. But I can’t pull ALL of the skeletons out of my closet. What I DO want

to do is thank the advertisers who have been with us from the beginning, especially Curtis Bashaw, who was more than an advertiser — he helped me launch the publication (he was the one who came up with the name) and remained my partner through the first year. I don’t need to tell anyone what a brilliant, inspiring businessman he is, as well as a good friend. I’m in Cape May because of Curtis, and for that I can hardly say how thankful I am. To the other advertisers who ponied up from the first issue... we never, EVER take your support for granted. Without you, we are nada. And to those who have joined us since, I hope you stay for the ride. And to the readers who show such love and enthusiasm for this publication AND this town, your passion humbles me, and keeps me honest. Please, all of you, come to our big birthday party at Sunset Boulevard this Wednesday, July 3 (the day we delivered the paper). There will be superb treats from Bliss Organic Ice Cream, Empanada Mama’s, Crespella Gourmet Crepes, Seaside Cheese, and free Surrey rides, courtesy of Cape Island Bikes, along with music from Audrey Snow and Barry Tischler. The party runs from 4pm to 8pm and everyone is invited. Bless you all, each and every one.

Happy Birthday America... Have a Great Fourth of July!

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

MUST say, I am displeased that I am writing this column with old fashioned pen and ink. Well, to be fair, my faithful manservant Kitchener is typing it on a splendid old manual typewriter whose ivory keys are chased in silver (except for the letter ‘L’ which was melted down in an emergency some years ago when we had a werewolf incursion in Cape May); I am shouting out the content as the mood takes me. My point is, that when I was first taken on to save this rag from tedium, that flaneur of a Scotchman editor promised that in 10 years’ time we would be merely thinking the words and they would miraculously appear on a holographic publication that floated in front of readers’ eyes as they drove their jetcars to the office on the moon. Indeed, I was fully expecting to be writing this ON the moon, where my pleasure dome would be complete, housing me, my staff, Young Albert (wearing special little weighted Moon boots) and my art collection. I would bounce around like a toddler, freed from Earth’s unkind shackles, and

perform all of the expected decadent zerogravity acts. Instead, here we are, writing with aged ink, that will be hand delivered to the newspaper, and then made into little lead letters by a phalanx of chimps from The Cape May Rescue Center For Distressed Apes. From there, a burly man clad only in a loincloth operates the press, making every copy by hand. A trio of blind ninjas from the personal guard of the last emperor of China then spring silently across the rooftops (with an occasional crash when they

encounter a newly built extension or porch) and drop copies off at agreed pickup points. You then pick it up and read it, unaware of the very mild psychotropic drugs that coat the paper but wondering why you feel particularly cheery right now. It all feels dreadfully passé to me, I must say, and so I am pleased to announce this wonderful news: as of this issue, the 10th anniversary one, we shall no longer be printing the paper. Instead, we will be delivering prototype 4D headsets to all households, and an unobtrufive foot-long aerial on each will beam the content directly into your head. It will be as if you read the whole publication in under a second and all the emotions will be delivered in a rush, rather than the usual slow process: you will feel delirious excitement, incurable laughter, crushing boredom and a craving to purchase all sorts of consumer goods you do not want. As an added bonus, we will also see what you see, 24 hours a day. Yes, you. And don’t even THINK about doing that thing we know you do every Wednesday evening.

Here’s To Your Health

I

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

AM on my feet, except while I’m driving or on the mat doing exercises, for 99% of the work day. When I do happen to sit down, it feels like a luxury and only lasts a few minutes before I’m called to the desk to help a member or to the floor to adjust a machine or teach a class. In short, I am always either standing or in motion. And I like it that way. Unfortunately, for a large number of people, sitting all day is a reality and it is a trap; it holds them in place and wreaks havoc with their health. According to Susan Orlean, writer for The New Yorker, “people who sit six hours a day or longer have a notably higher death rate, incidents of heart disease and diabetes.” Apparently, it’s a very effective way to slow your metabolism; it’s as if you are almost asleep (think hibernation). Everyone who sits at a desk knows about the mid-afternoon, “zombie-like”, state that comes over you — you are the non-walking dead. This is the same feeling that overtakes me when I’m driving a long distance; there’s nothing short of getting

out of the car and walking around that can resuscitate me. One answer to this problem comes in the form of a desk attached to a treadmill. It’s also known as a walking work station. It’s sounds dangerous at first hearing, but according to Susan, you get used to it quickly. She wrote her last two stories while walking. “They’re designed for walking. When you’re walking, you very quickly adapt to the motion, and I type just as well walking as I do sitting down. [Using] the mouse is probably the trickiest, to be honest.” Going to the gym alone doesn’t seem to offset the hours spent in the chair all day.

COME CHECK OUT ALL OF OUR NEW DESIGNS!

the flying fish studio 130 park blvd west cape may

The numbers indicate that sitting all day is hard on the body, even if you exercise right after work. The answer seems to be getting up and moving around every couple of hours or even, simply, standing. Standing requires balance, which in turn requires the flexing and relaxing of muscles continually. The nicer, more functional walking stations cost just under $5000. This sounds like a lot, until you compare it to work days missed and the cost of health insurance. Let’s say, for instance, a company has 20 desks and at $4000 a piece (I’m assuming a volume discount), spends $80,000 to retrofit an office. Between the savings on reduced productivity (the afternoon malaise) and missed days due to back issues from sitting, and all of the associated illnesses brought on by obesity – it would be a huge bargain to get your employees on their feet, and keep them there. So if you sit for a living, and want to live longer, don’t sit any longer. Get up, right now, and walk around your office or go online and buy a walking work station. You’ll thank me one day.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady, I moved out of Cape May about 10 months ago after living here for 20 years. I took a great job in the big city, had a nice going away/ moving party, packed up the U-Haul, and off I went. Well, it didn’t work out so great – I hated the job, hated the big city, and thankfully, I didn’t sell my little old Cape May house, because I’m moving back. The thing is, I gave a few things away that I couldn’t take with me, mostly tools and gardening things, a big ladder and such. Can I ask my friends for them back? Please? – Indian Giver Dear Giver, The Answer Lady is thrilled that you are heading home to Cape May, and also that you know when something isn’t working. So often in life, we feel that we are doing the ‘right thing,’ and we proceed to

f log ourselves with the ‘right thing’ even if we are utterly miserable, and then we write to our favorite advice columnist wondering why we are so very unhappy. But the Answer Lady digresses. The short answer is “no,” gentle reader. When we GIVE something away, it is no longer ours. It’s one thing to run into an acquaintance at the Rusty Nail, and he says “Hey, can you LEND me five dollars to tip the bartender and I’ll pay you back if you walk me to my car, where I foolishly left my cash;” it’s quite another to

The Movie Column

T

This week, Arts Editor Tom Sims gives us a preview of the Cape May Film Festival

HANKS to everyone who attended our film camp premiere last Friday night — it was a great success. There were four films featured, and we will let you know when they are posted online. Also, thanks to all of you who attended our screening of Amazing Grace (2007) at East Lynne Theater – we love working with East Lynne, and we’ve got two more great films coming up in the next few months. These are classic silent films with live organ music! Visit www.eastlynnetheater.org for details. Save the Date: October 25-27, 2013 is the 13th annual Cape May Film Festival, and the festival is shaping up to be a fantastic time! On Friday night, we will host CBS sports announcers Glen Macnow and Ray Didinger (who is also in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his sports writing as well). The two have written a book entitled The Ultimate Book of Sports Movies that highlights the top sports films of all time. These two are great to see live talking about the greatest sports movies of all time.

Didinger (top) and Macnow (bottom), pictured with their book. And if you think this will all be about “guy stuff” – think again! A great sports movie is manly, sure, but it also speaks to very moving themes like overcoming challenges, the triumph of victory, and learning to rise above defeat. And of course there is the romance: where would Rocky be without his Adrian? The classic marriage proposal: “I was wonderin’ if, uh, you wouldn’t mind marrying me very much.” How could a girl refuse?

When it comes to comedy there are plenty of boxing movies but let’s not forget our favorite baseball films. “If you build it, he will come,” is an often quoted line from the 1989 film Field of Dreams. Or of course the Cape May Film Festival founder, Robert Prosky, playing opposite Robert Redford in The Natural (1984). There is comedy, like Bill Murray taking a golf club to unsuspecting flowers on the golf course in the 1980 classic, Caddyshack. There are images that are burned in our collective minds from some of the greatest sports movies of all time, and chances are you’ll see them during this Friday night session. So mark your calendars as we plan out even more great films to be showcased throughout the weekend at the Chalfonte Hotel. Do you have a favorite sports film? If so, tell us what it is and why! The first person to mail their response to capemayfilm@ hotmail.com gets a free Saturday Daytime Pass to our Festival! Become a member by simply emailing us at that same address. Membership is free!

IMMIGRANT WORKERS. OIL ON PANEL. 2013 JUDITH ANDERSON.

TRAINS & TROLLEYS - the Cape May Story Judith Anderson Exhibit of Paintings & Photographs Opens on July 6 The Gail Pierson Gallery launches its fifth season in Cape May with a special exhibit of Judith Anderson’s paintings and photographs.

You Are Invited July 6

ART OPENING AND RECEPTION FOR JUDITH ANDERSON “TRAINS & TROLLEYS” Saturday, July 6 - 6-9 pm Good food, live music & good conversation.

Trains and Trolleys figured importantly in the building of Cape May. Anderson’s paintings tell the story. In recent years, she has focused on paintings inspired by trains - their geometry, their surfaces, their colors. This series, begun last fall, draws from vintage photos of trains from South Jersey, and Cape May in particular. The paintings meld Anderson’s fascination with capturing the ethos of a time gone by and her fascination with the powerfully iconographic images of trains and train travel. The idea for this exhibit grew from the collection of historic photographs made available from the Walt Campbell and Ben Miller collections. The Gail Pierson Gallery is open all year and welcomes new artists and art lovers from all over to Cape May. July Hours: Friday to Monday 10am to 1pm & 5 to 9 pm

Activity Of The Week

T

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Fireworks For The Fourth

HOUGH you may have come to Cape May for the sun, the sand, and the surf, you are sure to enjoy the rest of what the city has to offer. It’s Independence Day – you’re going to want to see some fireworks! Marking holidays with fireworks is a tradition as old as America itself. When the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, “It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with... bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other.” The new Americans followed his instructions – Philadelphia marked the nation’s first anniversary in 1777 with fireworks, simple, white sparkles in the sky. They were following a pattern set by the Chinese, who invented fireworks, and enhanced by the Europeans, who got fancy with large set pieces depicting famous faces and scenes. For Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, one reception featured flowers that exploded into a royal portrait about

Don’t forget to bring along one of these! 200 feet tall. A malfunction in one of the Queen’s eyes had her winking flirtatiously at her admiring subjects, but it was still an impressive display. Fireworks became even more impressive when color was added at the end of the nineteenth century. Cape May enjoys its own colorful display, sponsored by the folks at Congress Hall, shot from a barge in the water near Perry Street. The fireworks begin at dusk (about 7:45) on July 4. town to see them, so bring your patience and try to leave your car behind. If you like to be a part of the bustle, head toward Convention Hall and find a space in the crowd. If you’d rather a slice of beach to call your own, head west toward the Cove or north toward Poverty Beach. Put the smallest kids in a wagon, bring chairs, a blanket and bug spray, and pack snacks and beverages for a picnic under the stars. Bring a flashlight, and consider glow sticks or glow-in-the-dark jewelry for the kids – they’ll have fun, and they’ll be easier to keep track of in the dark. Time it right, and the kids will have time to wear themselves out before the fireworks start, so they’ll be ready to sit back and enjoy the show. If you just can’t wait for the fourth, Lower Township starts one day early with a celebration along the bayfront beginning at 5pm on July 3. There will be live music, food, and rides, in addition to the fireworks at 9. Light up your Independence Day with fireworks. Next week: Activities for the Kids

ZEKE is a three-year-old lab and shepherd mix currently residing at the shelter. He’s a fun-loving boy who can at times be on the boisterous side, but that’s just because he loves to play. Because of his size and power, he must go to a home with older children, but that’s just because of his exuberance and zest for life! If you think Zeke could fit into your life, please come meet him today. Zeke’s adoption fee is $95.

«

PONCHO is an adult chihuahua who has been at the shelter for nearly a month... And he really wants to go to his new home! He gets very nervous, especially around new people, so he will need time to get to know you. But once he does, he couldn’t be more sweet! He loves to be held, and could even be a good lap dog. If Poncho sounds like a good match for you, stop by the shelter for a visit! His adoption fee is $95.

If you’re looking for a sweet girl to light up your day, give Emerald a chance! Her adoption fee is $90.
