Talk Of The Town

RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS

Spotted! WE ALL know how worthy of fame Cape May’s beaches are, but not many know about the famous faces who frequent them. Philip Seymour Hoffman sightings have been many over the years, and this season alone, we’ve gotten glimpes of Tina Fey (she did some shopping at the Exit Zero store, where she purchased our Ghosts of Cape May series), and Oprah (perhaps you’ve seen the picture of her enjoying a breakfast at the Blue Pig with boyfriend Stedman on her Facebook page). Now, we’re hearing that the family of Michael Phelps (and perhaps the star swimmer himself?) is working on his tan in America’s original seaside resort. So keep your eyes peeled, Cape Mayans. Hopefully, you’re not easily starstruck.

Speedy Delivery The cast and crew of Almost Love includes Ben Ferber, Iraisa Ann Reilly, Casey Oakes, Sophia Barrett, and Kourtnie Boeve. Photograph by Aleksey Moryakov

Almost Love

LAST December, we interviewed Jon Wojciechowski, Cape May Stage’s new (at the time) Executive Managing Director and a very experienced marketing and development guy. We chatted with him about all manner of things, including an affinity for crossword puzzles and model railroading, but mostly we discussed his plans for Cape May Stage, the professional equity theater on Lafayette Street now in its 25th year, which continually brings Broadway talent to America’s Original Seaside Resort. Among his most exciting ideas? An aggressive resident intern program that would knock the socks of any intern program

CMS has initiated in years past. Now, that sock-knocking program is well underway. Before the start of the current season, nearly 80 applicants hailing from all over the country — each college educated in a specialized, theatrerelated field (marketing, set design, stage management, etc) — were interviewed for eight paid positions. “It’s been my experience that as we get older and we spend more time in the working world, we can become a little bit cynical and a little bit doubtful,” Jon said. “Young people come in with new ideas, and challenge our way of thinking and operating and maybe make us look at things from a different perspective that our otherwise jaundiced minds might

not have come up with.” And so far, so good. “I think it’s going great. The intern program has certainly brought new energy and new ideas.” And a new performance to look forward to. Beginning on June 15, the interns — along with a handful of talented locals — will produce the show they’ve selected, directed, rehearsed and labored over for months. They are responsible for the sets, the costumes, the acting — the whole shebang — in a production called Almost Love, a collection of one-acts from Almost Maine and LOVE/SICK, both written by playwright John Cariani.

THANK YOU to Cape Couriers for delivering our Chinese food from Cape Orient so quickly on the Fourth of July. We know... it’s not a great dinner choice on a holiday meant to celebrate America. Nevertheless, the boys on bikes are so speedy we thought we’d have time to run a quick, down-the-street errand before they arrived, and still have plenty of time to spare, but they were pedaling into the driveway as we pulled in. Check them out on Facebook!

Congrats! A BIG shout-out to Shona and Amelia Speyerer of Cape May, state finalists in the Nation American Miss Pageant. They are competing for Miss NJ, princess division (ages four to six... but no worries, there’s no makeup allowed) on August 16 and 17 in East Brunswick, New Jersey.

Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Heather Turner of North Cape May, NJ. How long have you been coming to Cape May? I’ve been living here year-round for 15 years, and I came here in the summers for 40 years before that. What do you like about it? I like just about everything, the beach, the people, the community... it’s just a great place. What’s your favorite place? That’s a tricky one... Probably the beach. Least favorite thing about Cape May? I don’t have one! What is your favorite restaurant? That’s hard to say, they are all so good that we really don’t have any one favorite... But the fresh seafood is always the best. And your favorite store? Well, of course, the Exit Zero Store. What do you like about Exit Zero? I like finding out about what’s going on around town, and I like the family beach pictures, and how they cater to just about everybody. It’s just a great periodical. What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? The only thing I could think of is that there’s not enough distribution down by the bay. What’s your T-shirt size? Large. Want to join our army of subscribers — there are hundreds of them in nearly 30 states! Call us on 609-770-8479 or buy one online at ezstore.us. It’s $50 for all 47 BW issues PLUS our six color issues.

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above. If you think you know the restaurant where these women are, you could win a gift certificate for a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 “It’s definitely an awesome feeling to be working on a production for a theatre where people like Linda Cohen have performed,” said marketing intern Allison Killeen, a recent Muhlenberg University graduate. “A little bit humbling, but amazing.” While the youthful energy that has gone into making this show a hit has been great, we’re willing to bet the youthful energy in the audience will be equally buzz-worthy. “Because most of the performances will happen later at night — 10:30pm — it’s great for a younger audience,” Allison says. “But the subject matter speaks to a younger age group as well. It’s about 20-year-olds, and their experiences navigating the muddy waters of love. The one-acts are funny, but also poignant, as they speak to a greater truth.” We asked Ohio native Ben

Ferber, Directing Resident of the Resident Intern Company and director of this show (he worked alongside Cariani on the selection and order of Almost Love’s stories) for a plot sketch of one one-act, and he described “raucous entertainment.” Picture this: Two strangers — one male, one female — each suffer from the fictional ‘impulsive compulsive’ disorder that forces one to act on socially unacceptable urges. One day, they lock eyes across a Walmart and, because they both have the impulse, run into one another’s arms. Now, they each must cope with falling for the other, all while trying to determine whether their feelings are real… or the product of a skewed mental state. This touches on one of many universal themes in Almost Love, Ben says, themes that should be accessible for a younger age group… one of the reasons a ticket to the show is either $15 (opening night), or a pay-what-you-can experience.

“This is a crass way to say this,” Ben told us, “and I don’t even know what film it’s from, but there’s a line that goes: ‘I love high school girls because I keep getting older, and they stay the same age.’ This makes me think of the theatre. It gets more expensive all the time, as technology gets better and the cost of building sets and other things goes up, so people think it’s just for the affluent. But what you’re seeing on stage is fundamentally the same thing it’s always been. That doesn’t change. It’s a literary medium, a communicatory medium, an intellectually stimulating experience and an inexorable social event. The theatre experience is inextricable from our culture. You can’t ever take it away.” Almost Love will run for four performances at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse located at 405 Lafayette Street in downtown Cape May. Performances are Monday, July 15 at 8pm and Thursday,

Different Strokes

RECENTLY, we’ve written a lot about bees. We told you about Andi and Doug Marandino, who opened their Cape May Honey Farm store on Sunset Boulevard, for which the couple harvests their own honey, this season. And we told you about Cape May Roasters coffee company, which recycles burlap bean sacks for use in the smoking of Doug’s hives (it’s a process that keeps the bees calm). Now, we have reason to write about bees again or, more specifically, about beeswax. That’s because Point

Pleasant-based artist and Cape May lover, Jim Inzero, is bringing his waxy, east-coast shoreline-inspired works to SOMA NewART Gallery for a stunning show — “Water and Wax” — this month. Jim specializes in encaustic art, which requires adding pigment to melted beeswax before applying that beeswax to a surface… in Jim’s case, that surface is wood. A first layer serves as a base for subsequent layers, resulting in a final product that’s textured and vibrant with a “lustrous enamel effect.” The form has roots in Greece, circa 5th century BC, where artists used it to decorate marble and terra cotta. It was also popular among Egyptians of 100-300 AD, who used it to paint portraits of mummies… often onto the very cloth a mummy would be wrapped in before burial. Jim first worked with encaustic on a trip with his wife to a little village called San Miguel Day Allende in Mexico in 2007, where he fell

“instantly” in love. “With this medium,” he told us, “the whole painting comes alive. The wax has a magic quality to it. When you see it in person, you can’t help but touch it.” Now, Jim goes through around 300 pounds of beeswax a year… and, often, other props as well. “I work with maps,” he said. “I transfer one on the wax, remove the paper, and it’s like it’s printed there. Add heat to it, and the map starts to move, because it’s part of the wax now.

It becomes almost sculptural at times.” And the goal of all this? “I want people to fall in love with my pieces,” he says. “When that happens, it’s the best feeling in the world.” To discover this feeling, Jim took a non-direct route, attending the Art Institute in Baltimore to pursue interior design with a fine art degree. After graduation, he worked as an architect under

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 the license of firms until 2003, before starting his own interior design firm. So, no, it wasn’t until that 2007 trip to Mexico that Jim decided to change directions completely and pursue a career making encaustic art, but even before this, unbeknownst to him, he was gathering the inspiration he now relies on for his seascape depictions. “I’ve always been drawn to the water,” he said. “I grew up in Connecticut, where I lived by the Long Island Sound. Then, after school, I sailed a lot with the architecture firm I worked for. That’s when I discovered the intensity of the sea, and how incredible it is. It’s so powerful, it kind of scares you.” Jim’s pieces showcase this fascination with all things nautical… pretty perfect for the art lover in the market for a piece which reminds her of Cape Island. “Cape May has been a

great inspiration for me,” Jim said. “We’ve been going there a great deal recently. It’s a short distance, but when I’m there, I feel so far away.” Which is one of the reasons Jim is thrilled to be showing his work here, in addition to galleries in Connecticut and Massachusetts, in just over a week. “There’s something to be said for how much support you can find for artists in Cape May,” he said. “I’m excited to be part of it. I never thought I would get to wake up and do what I do. There are so many rewards, and I don’t take it for granted.” “Wax and Water” will run from July 20 to August 18 in SOMA galleries one and two, with an artists’ opening reception on July 20 from 6-9pm. For a sneak peak of the work, check out Jim’s website, jiminzero.com, or the Exit Zero Facebook page.

first two days of the month over what is likely to be a long contentious battle for Cape May to change the funding formula for the Lower Cape May Regional School District. The night before Cape May City Council’s July 2 meeting, a council meeting was taking place on the other side of the canal, in Lower Township Hall. Mayor Michael Beck announced he was ending his silence on Cape May’s initiative to change the funding formula for the regional school district. The worst-case scenario is dissolution of the school district with Cape May becoming a sending district to the regional school. “This is huge,” stated Beck. “I want to send a clear message that we will fight and we will fight and we will fight. We will not allow our people to have our taxes raised $400, $500 or $600 per household.” He said Cape May’s prob-

FARMERS’ MARKET SALAD with fresh produce from lem was based on rising property costs and the exodus of families with children from Cape May. “The Pied Piper came to city of Cape May and took their kids away. The Pied Piper’s name was increased property values,” said Beck, noting most families with children who came to Cape May found themselves living and being educated in Lower Township.

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 18 Cape May Council approved a resolution July 2 that was submitted to the county executive superintendent of schools asking for an investigation of the advisability of the city withdrawing from the school district. The resolution was amended by council to “stress its preference and expectation” that the students would continue to attend Lower Cape May Regional schools should the district be dissolved. For those who came in late,

Cape May hired attorney Vito Gagliardi to find a way to reduce the cost of sending students to the regional school district. Gagliardi submitted a 92-page feasibility study to Cape May Council. Councilman Jack Wichterman said the city was paying an inordinate amount of money — $6.6 million, annually — to educate the 65 children sent to the regional school district. On July 1, Beck said that figure was not correct. Wichterman complained no one from the regional school board of education or Lower Township’s governing body had called him to discuss the matter. “I’m waiting to get a phone call,” he said. “We should be sitting down and talking instead of the lawyers making money,” he said, adding that Cape May would prevail on the matter. He said he did not care what the people of Lower Township thought of him. “I’m working for the people

in the City of Cape May,” he said. For every million dollars the city saves, the average homeowner in Cape May with an average assessment of about $500,000, would save $179 per year in taxes, said Wichterman. The tax bill for the average homeowner in Lower Township would increase by $85 for every $1 million increase in share of running the regional school. Wichterman said if the city saved $4 million per year, Lower Township residents would see a tax increase of $340 per year. Any tax increase would be phased in over five years. During public comment, John Fleming, a taxpayer in Lower Township and Cape May, suggested the councils of both areas sit down and come to a reasonable solution without having to go any further legally. Wichterman said the Lower Cape May Regional Board of Education would need to agree to a change in the school funding formula. He said the formula

could be changed so it is not based solely on property values, but a combination of property values and the number of children attending the school from each municipality. City Solicitor Tony Monzo said any change in the formula would have to be approved by the state Commissioner of Education. Mayor Edward Mahaney suggested the governing bodies and the school boards from Cape May and Lower Township sit down and try to resolve the issue at the local level. Deputy Mayor Bill Murray said the city had to exhaust all other methods before the matter of reducing the school funding formula goes to court. He said the results of a funding formula change could be disastrous for Lower Township should Cape May prevail in a lawsuit. “There is no impetus for them to talk about this,” he said.

package to obtain bids from demolition contractors. The objective is to have the building demolished over the course of the summer so a final inspection can take place to get $1.5 million of funding from Green Acres in place. The property is part of a plan to create a recreation area on the site of a former coal-gasification plant that left widespread pollution underground. JCP&L will conduct additional remediation on the site which will include underground barriers to control groundwater flow.

A Soggy Start

THE rain in Cape May falls mainly... every day. That was the story for the month of June which produced little weather favorable for going to the beach. As a result, the city suffered lower revenue from parking meters and the sale of beach tags. City Manager Bruce MacLeod reported the stormy numbers through June 30. Parking meter revenue last year to date

was $269,774. This year it totaled $225,553. Some folks feed the meter with their credit card and all those figures for June were not totaled, said MacLeod. He said that could add another $10,000 in revenue for June. Beach tag revenue last year by June 30 totaled $812,756. This year it totaled $795,523, down $17,233. MacLeod said the city was not surprised by the drop in revenue due to wet weather. Statewide rain average for June was over 9.5 inches, a record-breaker.

Bond Update

MACLEOD said the city’s bond rating improved from AA- to AA. On June 26, the city sold $13 million in bonds. The debt included the cost of constructing Convention Hall. Six financial institutions bid on the city’s bonds. The winning bidder was UBS Financial, said MacLeod. The city received an overall net interest rate of 3.3 percent on its debt.

T WAS a blemish on the otherwise fair face of Cape May: Vance’s Bar. The former watering hole where a game of billiards and a beer were once shared has deteriorated into a boarded-up building on Lafayette Street that has all the charm of a toothless cousin. Merchants and residents complained Vance’s Bar was a sad sight to see for those entering Cape May. Now it belongs to the City of Cape May and it won’t be long before bulldozers put the bar out of its misery. City Solicitor Tony Monzo said the city purchased the property for $1.9 million from Republic First Bank. He said Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) which is responsible for cleaning up underground contamination in and around the Vances’s Bar property and surrounding tennis courts and dog park, has advanced its efforts to get the final paperwork in order so the city can obtain all needed funding from the state Green Acres program. Monzo suggested the city put together a

HE expression “a little bird told me” has special and literal meaning if you are a bird watcher. Every new arrival marks a seasonal milestone. When the year’s first House Wren arrives, it lets you know with a song. After a winter’s absence, the morning you hear the ringing whistle of Osprey signals that a new breeding season has arrived. Who needs a groundhog to mark the passing of one season into the next when spring heralds are arriving with a fresh seasonal update everyday. To birders, spring sends an instant message update every morning. All you need to do is wake up, open a window, and get your voice mail. It’s not just informative, it is anchoring and affirming to be so connected to the world around us. Birds are nature’s envoys. All a person needs to do to get on Mother Nature’s Facebook page is boot up your senses and listen. Over at the Cape May Bird Observatory, they’ve got a entirely different way of Tweeting! You should stop over and see for yourself.

CMBO, the place for all your nature needs, is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), and open everyday from 9:30am to 4:30pm. While you are there, pick up a free copy of the Summer Kestrel Express with our schedule of programs and walks for the season, a free birding map and checklist, then browse around the shop. There’s so much to choose

from — jewelry, clothing, hats, hand painted decorations, books by local authors, even insect repellant! Don’t forget the special bargains in the sale area, used and vintage books section, some wonderful Charley Harper merchandise including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory (FREE when you become a member). If you can’t make it in person, you can find a wealth of birding information online at BirdCapeMay.org. If you are more into the IM world, you can find us on Facebook or Tweet us with just a few clicks. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times.

“LATER THAT DAY, I was reminded of one of life’s secrets: anytime you get a chance to have an 80-plus-year-old Southern chef cook for you, do it. Make that two 80-plus-year-old chefs with a centuryold chicken-frying pan, and it’s worth changing your plans.”

Choices for lunch with a friend:

lot a view). The usual menu of burgers, salads, wraps and lots (lots) of fried stuff.      Nothing to do when you’re finished  except get back to your car before the meter runs out.

mansion, beautiful lawns and gardens, even an herb garden a few steps from your table. A varied menu...cafe fare to an elegant Tea Luncheon, with unique salads, signature sandwiches and desserts to make you give up dieting. After lunch? Stroll the grounds, visit the museum shop or see the latest exhibit in the gallery. There’s no rush to get anywhere, because the parking is free.

LIVE MUSIC

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

HAT did we do in Cape May before air conditioning? I was asked this just the other day when I invited questions from the floor after my annual sold out lecture at the Convention Center, titled “Evils Of The Modern World: Why Technology Is Making Us All Cissies.” Cissies not being a pejorative term for Homosexualizers, who are, I maintain, the spice of life, and whom I will soon be specially welcoming to Cape May with the opening of “The Wee Fey Chapel” as the East Coast’s premier marriage venue for Ls, Bs, Gs, Ts and Qs, plus a host of other letters. No, I mean Cissy as used by the late Ma D’Catur, a term free of implications of sexual orientation but covering anyone who ever voiced a complaint about their own comfort, no matter the circumstances. The chap who was unlucky enough to be run over by a Cape May’s first-ever charabanc as it trundled along Beach Avenue at 3mph, and was lying with his legs reduced to a puddle of jelly – he let an audible whimper

escape his lips when Ma was passing – he was a Cissy. Also, she paused to strike him with the leather belt she kept to hand for just such dispensing of instant justice. Anyway, I had spent an amusing hour outlining the perils of telephonic communications, the brain-rotting effects of television, the blame remote controls will shoulder for the declining haul of future American Olympic teams and the evil of “a/c” units; the ten-minute standing ovation had just died down, when a soft-looking outof-towner dared to defend the devil’s cooling

device, asking cheekily “well what did you do in the bad old days?” He did not actually hear my answer as I had with the snap of two fingers set Young Albert on him, and he was learning first-hand the evil of messing with tiny terriers with attitude. But it got me reminiscing. Of course we had blocks of ice floated down the coast from Alaska, the only downside being that an ice cube for one’s malt had to be dispatched by brawny Innuit a year previously and was at that stage the size of a house. And we traditionally had fans powered by Wildwooders on treadmills, and there was a time when we had 100,000 bales of silk tethered over the city as a parasol (it worked but a sharp gust of wind pulled is so hard that we broke free of the mainland, and the canal was formed). What we actually did was sweat: from June until October we glowed, shone, dripped, ran and glistened. There was an upside: a daily skin scraping with fine spatulas generated some 400 tons of fine quality salt a day, and we grew wealthy trading it far and wide.

“Light, Particularly”

HE Macrobiotic diet teaches that the body is always moving towards a balance based on internal and external factors such as quality of the food you eat. It’s called the Cancer Diet, since people will turn to it when given the diagnosis and many have successfully returned to “balance” using it. One of its tenants is to only drink water when thirsty. Drinking beyond thirst is ultimately detrimental. It’s always made sense to me, even in the face of the “drink 8 glasses a day and more if working out” mantra pushed by just about everyone since the running culture took hold in the 70s. Everyone, that is, except for Dr. Timothy Noakes, author of Waterlogged: The Serious Problem of Over-Hydration in Sports. The sports drink industry took off in the late 60s with aggressive marketing by Gatorade which claimed it had scientific proof that by drinking their product you could increase your performance. The problem, they said, was that as we workout we get dehydrated and lose electrolytes which can lead to heat stroke and exhaustion. So Noakes set out to slay some sacred cows.

Hyponatremi (over-hydration) happens when the blood sodium concentration gets diluted. It’s not caused by too little salt but by drinking too much water before and during races. It used to be diagnosed as dehydration until it was finally understood, so patients were given IVs of... more water. “Drink before you get thirsty so you can replace all fluids and electrolytes you are losing while running”... seems like good advice, but according to Noakes, losing fluid during exercise is normal, if not optimal. The sugar you burn while running is surrounded by water so it too dissipates. Seventy to 80 percent of all fluid loss is through vapor, sweat and urine. The best

the flying fish studio 130 park blvd west cape may

runners don’t worry about making this up; they drink just enough to quench their thirst. There is no relationship between fluid intake and hydration and the incidence of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. The only correlate to core temperature is running pace. Your body will automatically adjust output in order to insure that the core temperature does not exceed what’s normal. If you run fast, relative to your ability, you will generate more core heat and lose more fluids than if you go slower. But you won’t be able to keep it up past a certain point. The only way to treat acute heat illness is external cooling with ice packs, not by drinking water or Gatorade. Heat exhaustion almost never happens to endurance runners; it’s prevalent among short distance runners who tend to push themselves to go very fast in a short period of time. In fact, a large number of heat strokes happen in cool conditions. According to DR. Noakes “…the body goes haywire, producing heat regardless of external temperature or duration of effort.” While running, the best thing you can do with water after quenching your thirst, is to pour it over your head to cool your skin.

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady, My parents live in Cape May, and my wife, kids and I spend two weeks with them every summer on vacation. The problem is… Well, my wife won’t have sex with me in my parents’ house. I’m not a maniac, but we have an active sex life and it’s difficult to go two weeks without it. She says she just can’t relax under my parents’ roof. What do I do? — Desperate Dear Desperate, The Answer Lady believes there are two types of people in this world: those who are immobilized and turned off by having relations in places they believe they “shouldn’t,” and those who have, let us say, the opposite reaction. The Answer Lady can certainly understand how a house full of family members can throw a damper on one’s ardor. The Answer Lady will assume

that privacy is not the issue here, and that you and your wife are staying in a room of your own, and are not sprawled in sleeping bags on the living room f loor. Surely you can prevail upon your parents to take the kids to the promenade with a couple of rolls of quarters for the arcade, or to Stockton Mini Golf for a couple of hours at some point during your vacation, so that you and your wife can enjoy some alone time. If that still doesn’t do the trick, perhaps more planning on your part is required. Arrange

The Movie Column

T

This week, Cape May Film Society President Dottie Knapp reviews “Epic”

HE new animated film, Epic, is loosely based on William Joyce’s children’s book, The Leafmen and the Brave Good Bugs. The book is comprised of quaint stories, but director Chris Wedge wanted to make this project a gigantic action adventure movie (thus the name). Well, since the main characters are insects, maybe the word “gigantic” isn’t the best descriptor, but the film does live up to the action adventure. However, that may be the problem. Epic opens with a scene that resembles the beginning of Indiana Jones and then repeated in the new Star Trek movie — nonstop action, one near miss after another, and an amazing getaway! Then we get to take a breath but with so much exposition that I felt I should be taking notes. Maybe I needed someone younger than another 60-plusyear-old watching it with me. In the story, a dying queen (voiced by Beyonce) must pass her magic on to someone else. This magic takes the form of a pod

Epic doesn’t quite live up to its name, but not for lack of trying. that itself chooses the next queen who (like her predecessor) protects the environment from total decay. Enter the Boggans. They cause death and destruction in the environment. The Boggan leader has father/son issues, the humans who get involved have father/ daughter issues, one of the Leafmen and his protégé have issues. As if that isn’t enough, we have to get the human daughter who has become the size of the Leafmen back to her

full human size... See, another story line. And then there is the major story, good versus evil. I don’t see how a young child could keep track of all the stories going on, and yet the individual story lines were too predictable to keep anyone older than 10 interested. What did keep my attention is the world that the animators immersed me in. The world of the Leafmen is beautifully imagined. I would have liked the movie to have given me more of it to explore and less time on the battle scenes that seem to run on forever. Chris Wedge is the director who gave us Ice Age and that squirrely squirrel that gets a laugh out of me every time — even if only in the trailers. They tried to give us some fun characters (you definitely need comic relief when you’re trying to save the world) but the snail and the slug, who are the protectors of the pod, just don’t make it. They are B list comics at best. This film is ambitious in all that it wants to portray, but somehow it turns out it just isn’t very, for want of better word, epic.

Activity Of The Week

C

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Activities For The Kids

APE May is a great place for a family vacation, but your kids just might want a little time to themselves after all that family fun. Consider sending them to a camp for a day or two of fun. Cape May’s original vacationers spent little time with their children. A Victorianera parent of means might hire a nanny to care for small children, and a governess to teach older kids. They might schedule time with children after they were clean, fed and exercised. Lower-income parents sent the kids out to work by the time they hit double digits, so parent/child time was limited. Today, most parents choose to spend time with their kids, but time apart can be healthy for both parent and child. Day camp is a good solution. My kids are Nature Center loyalists. From the time they were toddlers, they loved learning about the critters that call Cape May home. From 9:30am to noon, children explore a new topic each week, from bugs to birds, planets to pirates, in classes separated by grade level. There is

Whether it’s adventure, nature, or drama your child loves... Cape May day camps have it. also a kayak camp for older kids, a fishing camp, and a marine science/ocean glider camp for middle schoolers. These affordable programs are run by professionals with the assistance of motivated teenaged interns. Go for the day, the week, or all summer. They also offer activities for the whole family. The Nature Center is located at 1600 Delaware Avenue. Call 609-898-8848, or find them online at njaudubon.org.

Another affordable option is the Center for Community Arts, which offers art camps for children, with a different theme each week. There’s a mini art camp for kids aged three and a half to five, a kids camp for ages six to nine, and youth arts for ages 10-14. Camp runs from 9am-12pm at Cape May Elementary. Call 609-884-7525 to find out more. Another option for creative kids is the Cape May Stage Radio Camp, August 6-9, at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse. Find out more at capemaystage.com. EcoVentures Summer Camp is a newcomer to Cape May, offering activities like snorkeling, deep-sea fishing, and skimboarding, with environmental education included along the way. Based at the Grand Hotel and in Wildwood, they offer daily or multi-day signups for kids aged five13. Camp runs from 10am-4pm Monday through Thursday, and 7:15am-12:15pm on Fridays, which is field trip day. Call 609742-5656 for more information. Give your kids some space this summer! ZEKE is a three-year-old lab and shepherd mix (which is just about the best mix on the planet, we think) currently residing at the shelter. He’s a fun-loving boy who loves to play, and he’s strong and happy... just what you’d want in a new companion. If you think Zeke could fit into your life (we’d be shocked if he couldn’t) please come meet him today... it’s not fair he have to be behind bars one minute longer. The adoption fee is $95.

«

NORTON is a large adult Rottweiler who loves to get attention and play outdoors. He is strong, yet gentle and affectionate, and would make a good playmate for any older kid. He is very well-behaved while walking on a leash, and with patience, he could even be taught a few tricks! Norton is a very good listener, and his manners are impeccable. Please come visit him at the shelter — he would love to see you! $95.

«

OLLIE is a mixed breed with blue-grey coloring. Although he is only two years old, he is relatively quiet and calm. He enjoys walking, but is not enthusiastic about games of fetch. Ollie is a graduate of the shelter’s “Teacher’s Pet” obedience training program. The training reinforced his good manners — Ollie obeys commands to “sit, watch, and wait.” He would make a great companion for a single person. Ollie’s adoption fee is $95.

ORBIT was once a house cat living a comfy life, but due to tough times, he had to be surrendered to the shelter. At his old home, he lived with cats and dogs, so he would get along just fine with any other pets. If you are seeking a loving male cat, come in and see him... he will definitely make you smile. Orbit’s adoption fee is $35.

PUSH-POP is a Persian cat with a very unique look — not only is she very fluffy, but she is missing an ear. Nobody is sure where it went, but the lopsided look only adds to her charm! Push-Pop loves to cuddle and take naps on laps. If she sounds like the cat for you, stop by and see her! The adoption fee is only $20.

Exit Zero A SPECIAL ISSUE TO COMMEMORATE THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF CAPE MAY’S SPRIGHTLY SHEET

¯

SUMMER 2013

Happy 10th Birthday To Cape May’s Peppiest Periodical! WELCOME to a very special edition of Exit Zero which celebrates the 10th anniversary of our launch. Yep, we first hit the streets on July 4, 2003. It’s been that long. Regular readers will notice a couple things... 1. We’re a LOT bigger than our regular edition — almost four times the size. This is because, to celebrate the historical theme, we wanted to look and feel like an old Cape May newspaper from the 19th century. This

Cicada Invasion? Not So Much.

I

theme is carried through into our ads, which were brilliantly executed by our graphic designer Doree Bardes. 2. This issue ain’t free! Why? Because we spoil you enough with the weekly edition. You can’t get EVERYTHING for free! It’s still a bargain at $1! To help us celebrate, we have featured 10 kids (either locals or regular visitors) who are also 10 years old this year. You will see their photographs featured through-

out the issue. Snappy idea, eh? What you’ll also find on these pages is a selection of some of our favorite articles of the past few years, which we feel provide a useful, inspiring package that’s meant to help you get the best out of your Cape May vacation — or your everyday life, if you’re a local. Enjoy the paper. Enjoy Cape May. JACK WRIGHT Editor/Publisher

WELCOME TO A NEW VOICE IN CAPE MAY YOU can buy T-shirts in town featuring the slogan, “Cape May, A drinking town with a Victorian problem.” Leaving aside the obvious point that those kinds of T-shirts, like novelty answermachine messages, stop being funny after around a tenth of a second, they still provide the kernel of a thought. Cape May doesn’t have a Victorian problem, but we at Exit Zero, the town’s new weekly entertainment newspaper, think it has something of an

image problem. The pioneering folks who saved Cape May in the 1970s by getting together to preserve its Victorian heritage, in the face of a blinkered city council, cannot receive enough praise, and their legacy lives on through the good works of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts. In fact, it’s hardly a legacy since most of them are still alive, kicking and contributing as much as ever. However... Cape May is more than just the finest collection of Victorian architecture in the country. It’s America’s original beach

resort, and we think that’s an image that needs to be cultivated. Not to the detriment of the Victorian message, but in conjunction with it. We often hear people in this town waxing on about Martha’s Vineyard, the Hamptons and Key West. And to be sure, they’re all beautiful beach resorts. But think about it: what do these places have that Cape May lacks (okay, we’ll give Key West the nod for total hours of sunshine)? As well as boasting a Victorian wonderland that ranks among the finest Continued on Page Two

F YOU’VE been reading the papers lately, maybe you’re bracing yourself for insect catastrophe. We’re referring to the 17-year cicadas known as Brood II which have been growing underground for — you guessed it — 17 years. They’ll emerge locuststyle — up to one billion of them per square mile, according to the The Huffington Post — when the soil reaches 64 degrees. A repulsive siege, in the oh-so-scary words of the news media, will take over the east coast, from the Carolinas to New York, essentially ruining your summer and your lunch. The Philly Post predicted a Garden State Parkway covered in “an apocalyptic swarm of screeching bug-missiles on rumspringa.” So… should you be hiding your children? Packing up and heading west? Plugging your ears with balls of cotton when you sleep? We called an expert to find out what we can expect in Cape May. “You can expect to be disappointed,” said Michael Raupp, Professor of Entomology at the University of Maryland. Uh-oh, we thought… We’re really in for it. “Cape May is a little out of the range. The nearest counties to you guys that will experience the Brood are Atlantic, Cumberland, and Burlington.” Huh? Then why should we disappointed, we asked of Michael. Sounds to us like we dodged a bullet. Or, in the words of The Philly Post, billions of bug missiles. We’re avoiding a summer of sweeping crunchy exoskeletons from our porches... that’s what the 17-years leave behind after they mate and die, according to National Geographic. And we’re bypassing the deafening song the male cicadas create when courting the females… a noise that will Continued On Page 15

APE May is a little like that annoying kid in high school who received all the awards — dean’s list, MVP, perfect attendance, you name it. Our National Historic Landmark city and its assets have been honored time and again. Remember our placement on Budget Travel’s “10 Coolest Small Towns in America” list in 2012? Or how about TripAdvisor naming Sunset Beach the 24th best sandy stretch in the nation? The Albert Stevens Inn on Myrtle Avenue? It’s 18th in the world’s B&b rankings, also according to TripAdvisor. And the Mission Inn on New country. Jersey Avenue?

Number 25 in the

You might think another award would be ho-hum at this point, but the most recent honor bestowed upon our charmed city — a number five designation among the Top 10 Best Beach Towns in the country, according to a recent Parents magazine article — has us buzzing. Never mind that Parents has a readership over two million strong and a Facebook page with nearly one million likes — it’s the methodology behind their Top 10 piece that caught our attention. “I use the TripAdvisor service, myself,” article author and Parents Contributing Editor Karen Cicero told us. “And of course we value but our surveys are not typically comprised of only that.” people’s anecdotal experiences,

Instead, Karen, who says the piece had a year-long gestation period, started out by removing all towns with poor water quality from the running, using information provided by the National Resources Defense Council. “I was surprised,” she said. “We began with hundreds, and eliminated about 50 percent right there.” After that, Karen knocked out all beach spots with no lifeguarding services (at least another third). “Parents are watching their own kids on the beach,” Karen said, “but rip currents can happen any time, and having a trained professional is important.” At this point, Cape May was still in the running, so Karen called the city to see about one not-so-

minor detail — whether or not we suffered great devastation, like so many of our unfortunate neighbors to the north, at the hands of Hurricane Sandy. “It made me very happy to hear that Cape May had been spared,” said Karen, who is herself a Cape May vacation vet. “I have a 10-year-old daughter, Katie, who we brought to Cape May about two years ago,” she told us. “I live in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and my family has vacationed often in Wildwood, but I always wanted to try Cape May, and I was charmed by it, from beginning to end. We loved the old-fashioned carnival nights offered by Congress Hall, the welcoming vibe of the city. My daughter still asks to go back.”

(Check out a blog post on Karen’s Cape May experience by visiting p a r e n t s . c o m / b l o g s /g o o d y blog/2013/05/33709/.) Karen was especially impressed with the Nature Center on Delaware Avenue. “It was Katie’s favorite memory,” she told us. “She participated in a program that allows kids to cast their net into the ocean, and discover the little critters that come into it. The experience stuck with her. And I remember thinking how affordable it was.” It is inland activities like this that were also taken into account
