Local Class War ONLY one thing seems certain in the battle between Cape May and Lower Township over the cost of educating children at Lower Cape May Regional High School... it’s going to rumble on for a long time. After Cape May City Council asked the county executive superintendent of schools for an investigation of the advisability of the city withdrawing from the Lower Cape May Regional School District, Lower Township responded with a resolution July 15, declaring its intention to “vigorously oppose and resist all attempts to change the composition of, or to dissolve the Lower Cape May Regional School District.”

A day later, during a Cape May City Council meeting, councilman Jack Wichterman called Lower Township’s resolution “very ambiguous.” “If I was over there I’d pass a very ambiguous resolution also because they don’t have a leg to stand on,” he said. Wichterman complained that when the school district was formed by a vote in 1956, the funding was based on the number of students that attended the school, not on the equalized values of property in the municipality. The formula was changed by the state in 1975 to one of equalized property value without input from municipalities. A meeting with the executive county superintendent

which included Lower Township officials was scheduled for July 22 to discuss a 92-page feasibility study of withdraw or a change in the funding formula paid for by Cape May. Wichterman said the county executive superintendent has 60 days to render an answer. During public comment, Cape May resident Jo Tolley, a retired Presbyterian pastor and former Cape May Board of Education member, read into the record a letter to editor she wrote to the Press of Atlantic City. She noted that Cape May County was the second poorest county in the state. Tolley said she was appalled the city hired an attorney for the

IT’S been a long time since Cape May had a men’s clothing store. People who’ve lived here for more than a few decades will recall Barry Clothes, which has now reached legendary status. Which is why it’s so great to welcome Galvanic to the Washington Street Mall. We wrote about the store a couple months ago and reported on the pretty imaginative construction and design work that was going on. So imaginative that the guys didn’t get open in time for Memorial Day. Or in June either. Last week we popped in to see how things are going and we spoke to Mark Platzer, former owner of the C-View, whose son Ryan is the driving force behind Galvanic. “We’re doing great!” said Mark, who couldn’t contain his enthusiasm for the store. And nor can we — Galvanic is beautiful. There isn’t a place like it in Cape May. The reclaimed woodpaneled walls, the cathedral ceiling, the chic fixtures, the classy design touches everywhere you look and the sophisticated range of clothing and accessories put it in a class of its own. Galvanic would fit in quite nicely in Manhattan’s West Village or Philadelphia’s Old City. You’ll find Galvanic in the section closest to Ocean Street.

And Things We Don’t Love... WE understand how important signage is, especially when local businesses are trying to make their living from a short season, but those big signs that have appeared on the roadside, just before the harbor bridge, are in the eyesore category. The sign is advertising businesses we support and enjoy, but we CAN’T support such an eye-popping display. We still miss that beautiful old wooden Lobster House sign.

The Joy Of Flying IT WAS one of those storybook summer nights — a breezy porch the color of sea foam, wooden rocking chairs, ice clinking against cocktail glasses, the distant sound of tourists languidly flip-flopping to dinner in rubber sandals, a full moon, the occasional lightning bug, and just

because there’s no such thing as a picture perfect evening, the occassional mosquito. “I didn’t always want to be a pilot,” said Ken Rowan, owner of this sea foam porch on Congress Street and an international captain for Delta Airlines. “I probably wanted to play sports.” “Baseball,” chimed in Viviane, Ken’s wife of 29 years (and three months), interior designer, and the woman behind the shop called White on Ocean Street. She sipped a freshly squeezed watermelon martini on the next rocker over. “I wasn’t good enough to go all the way,” said Ken, “but I played every position — first base, outfield, pitcher.” In fact, it wasn’t until his junior year of college, he was a communications major at Rutgers University, where he met Viv, that Ken even set foot on an airplane. And it wasn’t until he graduated in 1980 at the age of 22, at the nudging of a US Navy recruiter, that he entertained the thought of becoming a pilot.

“I went to Aviation Officer Candidate school in Pensacola, Florida,” he said, one of his two cats hopping onto his lap. “Remember the movie An Officer and a Gentleman? That was pretty much it, but a lot less glamorous.” Ken spent the next justunder-seven-years in the service, where he flew the P3 aircraft, a four-engine turbo prop tasked with hunting for enemy submarines in the Pacific during the Cold War. “I remember having to land once with one engine down during a heavy snowstorm in Anchorage, Alaska,” he said. “That was a pretty exciting flight.” Now, Ken flies a 767-400 wide-body around the globe —his schedule next month will take him to Madrid, Milan, Venice and Nice. “We usually get to spend 24 hours in each place,” he said. “There are days I’ve woken up at home and thought I was in a hotel room, without any idea

plane isn’t much different than being a bus driver. “Thanks for keeping me grounded, Viv,” Ken says. It’s a picture of this group — Viviane, Jordan, and the couple’s other son, Brandon, 20, a music producer who’s spending his summer waiting tables at the Blue Pig — that Ken keeps under his uniform’s hat during each take-off. “I’ll often have frightened flyers who come to me wanting to know if it’s really safe,” Ken said. “I tell them, ‘Look, you see this picture? That’s my family, and I am going home to my family.” To his family, and to his breezy sea foam porch in Cape May. Because no matter how many places Ken must go, it’s this little piece of the planet that is home. “When I come over the bridge,” he said, “I leave the weight of the world behind me. There’s the rest of the world, and then there’s Cape May. We talk about it all the time, and we feel it every time we land here.”

But it is, perhaps, Ken’s respect for the aircraft itself that makes him most well-suited for the job. “I’ve been doing this for 33 years,” he told us, “and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched an airline take off and thought, ‘That’s amazing, that something that big — something that weighs 200-plus tons — is airborne.’ And that’s the simplest part, just getting it off the

ET’S talk about Indigo Buntings. Inda-what? Indigo Buntings. A small, common, drop-deadgorgeous bird that thrives where woods meet fields. The bright blue plumage puts a summer sky to shame. The sharp, glittery notes of the bird’s song gladden the heart. It’s just about the most spectacular thing you will ever see this side of the pearly gates and a Super Bowl for the Eagles and... You’ve never seen one. What a stupendous shortfall in your life which, very fortunately, can be amended. Indigo Buntings are pretty common in Cape May. All you need to do is put yourself in fortune’s path. Indigo Buntings are about the size of a sparrow and (in case you haven’t guessed) indigo blue. At least the males are indigo blue. The females are cryptically brown... and not to be seen when incubating their eggs in the small, cup-like nest placed in low shrubs, about one to three feet above the ground. Boy, you’re thinking, that guy Seymore is one smart dude to know all this cool

stuff about birds. Uh, no. This guy Seymore just knows that there are books like Kenn Kaufman’s Lives of North American Birds and David Sibley’s Guide to Bird Life and Behavior that have all this neat natural history information inside. The books are open on my desk. Back to Indigo Buntings. The birds arrive in late April. They remain in Cape May until early November. But the best time to see them

is now when males are really vocal. Sitting out on the tops of bushes, singing their buntingtrimmed hearts out. They are also fond of utility lines. When you are as beautiful as a male Indigo Bunting, you want to stand out. My own experience with this species goes all the way back to 1958. I was a wee little Thanu armed with a pair of WWII binoculars borrowed from my dad, searching the world for all the birds Ma Nature could muster. I didn’t have a field guide. By the way, you can buy one (or 21) of these at CMBO, too. All I had were a bunch of Audubon leaflets that I got in the mail, including the one featuring Indigo Bunting. I never thought I’d ever see a bird this beautiful but, well, I wanted to be prepared just in case. It took me years to find one. That’s because I didn’t know where to look. Cape May Bird Observatory has simplified this, too. They offer lots of daily walks all summer long and many of them cut right through prime Bunting habitat. Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

Y THE time you read this, the temperature will once more have fallen to utterly unimpressive double digits, and you will have stopped fainting and wailing and staggering around wailing of global warming, plagues of locusts and the End of Times. In fact, as I dictate this, I am sweating profusely, but only from the effort of having to shout at the legions of glistening Shoebies to remember to hydrate, and also to not expose quite so much wobbling flesh: “Spanx!” I shout, “wear Spanx!” My rule for whether it is “hot” or not is to watch my faithful manservant, Kitchener, step outside and attempt to cook my breakfast on a specially cleaned part of the sidewalk. Bacon, two eggs (boiled until the yolks are runny but not gelid), four toast soldiers to dip in the eggs, two round segments of black pudding (flown in from the north of England especially) and eight sliced mushrooms. I make sure to observe him closely as he does this — if he catches alight whilst

preparing the meal, it is “hot”. If not, and he suffers only, say, third degree burns to his hands, then it is “cool”. Of course, there are other official markers of a “hot” summer: when the tarmac at The Point melts enough to allow a car (station wagon, not a convertible) to sink without trace, that is “hot”. When a carelessly discarded soda bottle melts into a glassy puddle, that is “hot”. When you look directly up into the sun to get COOLER, that is “hot”. And do not start me on the current crop of weather “experts” and their “feels like”

temperature reading. Who are they to say how we feel? If it is 99 degrees out, tell me that it is 99 degrees. Do not, sir/madam, presume to tell me how hot you believe I will feel. As it so happens, on days when I wear my starched collar and wool suit, I actually “feel” like it’s 300 degrees. And when I stride out only in my lamé posing pouch and a straw boater, then I “feel” like it’s 75, though I do seem to make bystanders sweat a little when they catch sight of me and find they cannot tear their eyes away. I rather think that I raise people’s body temperature by a good half degree, perhaps more when I flex and the oiled tattoo of the famous Cutty Sark tea clipper on my chest seems to race before the wind. I will not tell you what I must do to perform the “drop anchor” maneuver, suffice to say the last time I pulled a muscle and had to be helped home to bed with an ice pack in my pouch. Just you wait til August 23, when we will hit 200 degrees and Cape May will spontaneously combust. THEN — and only then – will it be “hot”.

Here’s To Your Health

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

HERE was a time when the summer was for bronzing or burning, but not for staying pale. So the palest among us (that would be me) would often play for hours in the sun, and we paid for it with blistering skin, sitting in front of a fan, and using ice cubes and pain killing creams to alleviate the burning. Our one day trip “down the shore” resulted in two to three days of suffering. Insane as that seems, there was no other option but to stay out of the sun or put a towel over your head. Skin cancer is big business now. Besides cosmetic treatments like Botox and Rystaline, dermatologists spend their days cutting, slicing and chemically treating patients for things like innocuous sun spots all the way to deadly melanoma. And unlike years before, when the Coppertone ad featured dark brown beauties, most people on the beach today are sporting some form of sun protection; tan is still in, it’s allure is just a little paler now. Sunscreens have been a godsend for the fair skinned; allowing us to stay out in the sun longer, without getting fried But some researchers have questioned their safety. The

more popular forms are, after all, chemicals — chemicals absorbed by the skin. There are two basic categories of sunscreen. One reflects light off the skin like tiny mirrors, using zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. They block UVA and UVB rays (the whitenosed lifeguard is a good example). They are especially recommended for people with sensitive skin, but the white pasty creams are not really practical for full body application. A more attractive alternative is the use of natural minerals. They come in different colors and are absolutely safe to use. Our intern, Bobbi Beers, introduced me to a brand called ProScience, which she purchased from her

dermatologist. She first applies a brown cream that smells and looks like chocolate icing. It adds color immediately to the skin. Then she applies a dusting of minerals with a make-up brush… and it’s waterproof! The second category is the aforementioned chemical solutions, which come in sprays and lotions. The best types are called broad spectrum. The studies on the longterm use of these are spotty (pun intended). Nothing conclusive has, to date, shown a direct link between these formulations and an increase in cancers. But it seems reasonable that balancing the potential dangers of the chemicals with their obvious effectiveness is a good trade off. According to the Environmental Working Group’s 2013 report, the difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is negligible. They recommend using a lower SPF more frequently during the day, as it provides more UVA protection than a higher SPF. The reality is that skin cancers of all kinds are on the rise, especially melanoma. Covering up with a hat , long sleeves, and special SPF clothing is prudent and smart.

HE film The Thief of Bagdad is the thrilling story of a crook who falls in love with the daughter of Bagdad’s Caliph, or religious ruler. The Caliph promises his daughter’s hand to the man who returns after a long journey to bring the rarest treasure. The thief sets off on a magical journey, but he doesn’t realize that the prince of the Mongols is interested in the ruler’s daughter — and not playing by the rules! The Thief of Bagdad (1924) is a classic silent film, and thought by some to be the most fantastical work of legendary actor Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. Now imagine that film being shown in the spirit in which it screened nearly 90 years ago... with live organ music! East Lynne Theater Company is presenting The Thief of Bagdad as part of its Silent Film Series in partnership with Cape May Film Festival. Wayne Zimmerman will be the organist playing live. If you have not been to a film in this series, you are truly missing out. Wayne has been part of ELTC’s

This movie will be even more fun to watch accompanied by live organ music! Silent Film Festival since 2011 when he played for Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Chaney. Last year, he played beautifully for Seven Chances, The Mark of Zorro, and Nosferatu. Wayne creates his own original score for every film, and he plays them from memory, never even taking a break. Wayne is a long-time member of various theater organ societies and has performed on noteworthy pipe organs, including the Wanamaker organ in Philadelphia, the

largest working musical instrument in the world. Back in its time, The Thief of Bagdad was not as appreciated as it is today for its art direction and sets. It cost two million dollars to make (this seems like chump change today, but just imagine that value in 1924). It didn’t do so well in the box office, and afterward Douglas Fairbanks stuck with the roles he was most familiar and recognized for, such as swashbuckling pirates and the like. Now the film is heralded as a masterpiece by some, and great fun by many others. You’ll marvel at how delightful a silent film can be when accompanied by live organ music. This event will be a rare gem in a summer filled with lackluster “blockbuster” films, such as Superman or the Lone Ranger. Prepare yourself for a true magic carpet ride! The Thief of Bagdad screens Sunday, August 4, 8:30pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, 500 Hughes Street. A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Parasailing

E ALREADY know how beautiful Cape May is, on the land and on the water. But East Coast Parasail can give us a wonderful view — now you can for yourself how pretty it is from the sky. Victorians were fascinated by the possibility of flight. The era’s celebration of the natural world was tinged with hubris — humans must be able to conquer all frontiers, including the sky. Before Orville and Wilbur Wright took off in 1903, hundreds of people attempted to take flight. Hot air balloons and gliders were among the first experiments with flying machines, with names like the “Artificial Albatross” and the “Aerial Steam Carriage.” American inventor Charles Richtel, who had created the funhouse mirror, demonstrated a sort of modified dirigible, powered by hand-cranks, in 1878. His riders reportedly stayed aloft for two hours and Richtel actually sold five of his machines. He envisioned teams of men cranking their way across the continent. However, in the

East Coast Parasail lets you conquer the sky, though you don’t so much fly, as float. With the help of a powerful winch, you rise gently off a boat, until you are five hundred feet over the ocean. Somehow, it’s not frightening. You and your tandem partner can chat as you look down on the shoreline and the dark shapes swimming under the surface. As you descend, you can choose to take a dip into the ocean or simply return to

the boat... Take the dip. Located at Utsch’s Marina, East Coast Parasail uses Coast Guard-certified captains, and safety is paramount. Lifejackets are required. Parasailers must be over 6, and you need parental permission if you’re under 18. People under 110 pounds must ride with a partner. Wear sunscreen, and leave a towel in the car, along with your cell phone and anything else you want to keep dry. The spray of the boat will get you a little wet so wear a bathing suit and shorts. Purchase the picture package for $30 and you’ll get an SD card with pictures of up to four people — it’s worth it. Parasail flights are $69.99, and there is a $5 discount for buying through the website, eastcoastparasail.com. You can go along as an observer for $35. Tipping the crew is customary. Make a reservation as early as possible (call 609-898-8359) and if weather ruins your plans, they will make an attempt to accommodate you. Yep, we first hit the streets on July 4, 2003. It’s been that long. Regular readers will notice a couple things... 1. We’re a LOT bigger than our regular edition — almost four times the size. This is because, to celebrate the historical theme, we wanted to look and feel like an old Cape May newspaper from the 19th century. This

WELCOME TO A NEW VOICE IN CAPE MAY YOU can buy T-shirts in town featuring the slogan, “Cape May, A drinking town with a Victorian problem.” Leaving aside the obvious point that those kinds of T-shirts, like novelty answermachine messages, stop being funny after around a tenth of a second, they still provide the kernel of a thought. Cape May doesn’t have a Victorian problem, but we at Exit Zero, the town’s new weekly entertainment newspaper, think it has something of an

image problem. The pioneering folks who saved Cape May in the 1970s by getting together to preserve its Victorian heritage, in the face of a blinkered city council, cannot receive enough praise, and their legacy lives on through the good works of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts. In fact, it’s hardly a legacy since most of them are still alive, kicking and contributing as much as ever. However... Cape May is more than just the finest collection of Victorian architecture in the country. It’s America’s original beach

resort, and we think that’s an image that needs to be cultivated. Not to the detriment of the Victorian message, but in conjunction with it. We often hear people in this town waxing on about Martha’s Vineyard, the Hamptons and Key West. And to be sure, they’re all beautiful beach resorts. But think about it: what do these places have that Cape May lacks (okay, we’ll give Key West the nod for total hours of sunshine)? As well as boasting a Victorian wonderland that ranks among the finest Continued on Page Two

APE May is a little like that annoying kid in high school who received all the awards — dean’s list, MVP, perfect attendance, you name it. Our National Historic Landmark city and its assets have been honored time and again. Remember our placement on Budget Travel’s “10 Coolest Small Towns in America” list in 2012? Or how about TripAdvisor naming Sunset Beach the 24th best sandy stretch in the nation? The Albert Stevens Inn on Myrtle Avenue? It’s 18th in the world’s B&b rankings, also according to TripAdvisor. And the Mission Inn on New country. Jersey Avenue?

You might think another award would be ho-hum at this point, but the most recent honor bestowed upon our charmed city — a number five designation among the Top 10 Best Beach Towns in the country, according to a recent Parents magazine article — has us buzzing. Never mind that Parents has a readership over two million strong and a Facebook page with nearly one million likes — it’s the methodology behind their Top 10 piece that caught our attention. “I use the TripAdvisor service, myself,” article author and Parents Contributing Editor Karen Cicero told us. “And of course we value but our surveys are not typically comprised of only that.” people’s anecdotal experiences,

Instead, Karen, who says the piece had a year-long gestation period, started out by removing all towns with poor water quality from the running, using information provided by the National Resources Defense Council. “I was surprised,” she said. “We began with hundreds, and eliminated about 50 percent right there.” After that, Karen knocked out all beach spots with no lifeguarding services (at least another third). “Parents are watching their own kids on the beach,” Karen said, “but rip currents can happen any time, and having a trained professional is important.” At this point, Cape May was still in the running, so Karen called the city to see about one not-so-

detail — whether or not we suffered great devastation, like so many of our unfortunate neighbors to the north, at the hands of Hurricane Sandy. “It made me very happy to hear that Cape May had been spared,” said Karen, who is herself a Cape May vacation vet. “I have a 10-year-old daughter, Katie, who we brought to Cape May about two years ago,” she told us. “I live in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and my family has vacationed often in Wildwood, but I always wanted to try Cape May, and I was charmed by it, from beginning to end. We loved the old-fashioned carnival nights offered by Congress Hall, the welcoming vibe of the city. My daughter still asks to go back.” minor

F YOU’VE been reading the papers lately, maybe you’re bracing yourself for insect catastrophe. We’re referring to the 17-year cicadas known as Brood II which have been growing underground for — you guessed it — 17 years. They’ll emerge locuststyle — up to one billion of them per square mile, according to the The Huffington Post — when the soil reaches 64 degrees. A repulsive siege, in the oh-so-scary words of the news media, will take over the east coast, from the Carolinas to New York, essentially ruining your summer and your lunch. The Philly Post predicted a Garden State Parkway covered in “an apocalyptic swarm of screeching bug-missiles on rumspringa.” So… should you be hiding your children? Packing up and heading west? Plugging your ears with balls of cotton when you sleep? We called an expert to find out what we can expect in Cape May. “You can expect to be disappointed,” said Michael Raupp, Professor of Entomology at the University of Maryland. Uh-oh, we thought… We’re really in for it. “Cape May is a little out of the range. The nearest counties to you guys that will experience the Brood are Atlantic, Cumberland, and Burlington.” Huh? Then why should we disappointed, we asked of Michael. Sounds to us like we dodged a bullet. Or, in the words of The Philly Post, billions of bug missiles. We’re avoiding a summer of sweeping crunchy exoskeletons from our porches... that’s what the 17-years leave behind after they mate and die, according to National Geographic. And we’re bypassing the deafening song the male cicadas create when courting the females… a noise that will cause permanent hear-
