RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS
Quack Thinking... LAST week, a mother duck waddled across the street with her babies (as ducks do) near Wawa in North Cape May, and six of these babies fell into a storm drain. Animal Control was called, but were unable to help, as the ducks hid in a pipe every time people got close. Big shout-out to Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Gym for tirelessly searching for a solution, and to Patti Whitten of Avalon Bagel and her boyfriend Jay, who rescued the little guys by hiding and being very quiet — until the ducks reappeared. They were then shooed into a basket, and taken to safety.

Help A Local Star LIKE many churches over 100 years old, Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church on the Washington Street Mall is facing maintenance-related challenges. About six years ago, the church began a project to repair its stained glass windows, an expensive undertaking totaling $1 million. “We are down to the last $220,000, that’s what we need,” said Terry McGarvey, Our Lady Star of the Sea business manager. The church’s large stained glass windows, transepts, are completed. The lowest windows on the building known as casements have been finished. Of the middle windows, called
clear story, six have been completed with seven windows still needing repair. The church’s clear story windows are massive in size. While the Biblical scenes are barely visible from outside, inside the sanctuary, sunlight brings in a blaze of color. The cost to repair each clear story window is $50,000. The windows are removed and carefully transported to Media, Pennsylvania’s The Art of Glass, where they’ve been disassembled. Then the lead that holds the glass in place along with the sash and frame is replaced. Original brass hardware is reused when possible. While stained glass window repairs are expensive, the workmanship and value of the win-
dows is priceless, said Terry. “The next biggest challenge is we need some major repairs to the roof,” he said. Some years ago, the church put a new slate roof on the building. The current problems are flashing, valleys and membranes. Missing gutters are also on the repair list. “We’re literally talking hundreds of thousands of dollars to do this,” he said. “I see this project larger than a Catholic thing; this is a Cape May thing.” Terry said the church is an anchor for the mall and the community. In addition to roof repairs, pointing on the granite blocks of the church need repaired.

DURING the first four years of the Civil War, Mary Lincoln wore a different pair of silk gloves every day. “She was a great embarrassment to her husband,” says Candace O’Donnell, who co-wrote along with husband John Mary Todd Lincoln: Much Madness is Divinest Sense, playing at the Chalfonte Hotel on August 10 and 24 at 8pm. Candace, a Cape May resident, will perform the lead (and only) role. “I’ve always been fascinated by her,” Candace told us. “And a book about Mary that I read as a member of the Cape May Book Club rekindled my interest.” Candace didn’t want to tell a story of “unrelieved” tragedy and was able to tap into the humor. For starters, Mary was “the original retail therapy girl,” who hid bills from her husband. “I hope people come away thinking: ‘There’s something about this woman I never would have guessed,” Candace said. The show, which is $20 a ticket, will take place in the hotel’s Henry Sawyer room. Reserve tickets in advance by calling 609-884-8409.

Subscriber Of The Week
Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Karen Clarkson of Philadelphia, PA. How long have you been coming to Cape May? I’ve been coming to Cape May for a pretty long time... I think it’s been 18 years. What do you like about it? What a question! I like everything, of course... the town, the people, the ocean! All of it is wonderful. What’s your favorite place? That would probably have to be Poverty Beach. Least favorite thing about Cape May? I really can’t think of a thing; I love everything about it! What is your favorite restaurant? There are so many to choose from! I like Tisha’s, the Merion Inn, the Blue Claw... and a few others. They are all so great! And your favorite store? The Whale’s Tale, definitely. What do you like about Exit Zero? I like the store and the magazine! I think that the magazine is fun and edgy and entertaining, and the store is great, too. They sell such cool and fun things. What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I don’t really have anything. There’s nothing I don’t like. What’s your T-shirt size? That’s a little personal! Want to join our army of subscribers — there are hundreds of them in nearly 30 states! Call us on 609-770-8479 or buy one online at ezstore.us. It’s $50 for all 47 BW issues PLUS our six color issues.

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above. If you think you know the restaurant where these women are, you could win a gift certificate for a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 As a result of roof deficiencies, the church is suffering water intrusion. “There is plaster falling off over the Blessed Mother,” said Terry. “Our Lady needs our help.” Water is also leaking near a statue of Saint Joseph. Chipping plaster is visible over two stained glass windows. A window depicting Jesus and Mary may be repaired as early as this summer, said Terry. The total project is expected to take 18 months to two years to complete. The church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A bell in the tower is stamped with a date of 1878, the year of the church’s incorporation. Prior to that date, a church called St. Mary’s, chartered in 1848, existed in a location that is now the Acme parking lot.
Many visitors to Cape May enter the church to view the sanctuary with its high ceiling and stained glass windows, said Terry. A fundraising drive will begin shortly.
The B&B Queen AT 92 years old, Terry Ripoli, may be the oldest innkeeper at a bed and breakfast inn anywhere in America, although no one is keeping such figures. Terry began cooking breakfast for guests and doing laundry 15 years ago after her son, Dave Ripolo, bought Highland House on Broadway in West Cape May. Her lifelong career was as a hairdresser; she opened her own shop in south Philly at the age of 31. Hairdressing was more formal in those days with the stylists wearing white shoes, white stockings and dresses. She wore a pearl necklace and earrings to work. Each stylist was required to have a unique hairdo and hair color serving as sort of a living catalog of styles, said Terry.
She also worked as a hairdresser for eight years — while in her 80s — in a nursing home. “I started cutting everybody’s hair for nothing,” she said. “When I left there, I was making $8 per head.” At lunchtime, she helped patients eat their meals. But Terry’s hairdressing career ended at the age of 87, after hip surgery. The plan was for to Terry to recuperate at the bed and breakfast inn, but she soon became involved with its operation. Today, she rises at 5am to start breakfast, which may include scrambled eggs, French toast, waffles, homemade cake and “Terry’s muffins.” The Highland Inn is petfriendly which is one of the joys of Terry’s life. “The dogs make me happy,” she said. “They all seem to like me, too.” Meeting people (and mutts) keeps Terry young, and the inn in the heart of West Cape May gets a number of repeat guests who like its homey charm and

According to Dave, the old house had been closed up for some time before he purchased it 19 years ago, when it had a mustly smell. When Terry cooked meat balls and gravy one day, it instantly began to smell like home. His mother’s help at the inn is a blessing, since he
continues a career in Philadelphia. While Cape May is a newer destination for Terry, she has been coming to Wildwood for more than half a century. Her brother owned a home at 23rd and New York Avenue, she said. “In my day they had the Lucky Club, and Joey Bishop was there and Sammy Davis Jr. was there,” she said. Terry worked as a hat check girl at the Nut Club. Summers as a teen were spent living and working on a farm in Mt. Holly, New Jersey owned by Lester Jones, “picking tomatoes and potatoes.” In those days, she was driving a 1939 Hudson with running boards. “We used to go to the town called Lumberton that had a bar. I was 16 years-old then and that’s how I learned to dance a Polka,” said Terry. She said her long life is attributable to eating well and enjoying life. She admits to

Terry met her husband, Edward, on Valentine’s Day at the Half Hour Club in Philadelphia. They raised five children together. Travel has been a part of her life including trips to Spain, Algiers and Italy and a crosscountry trip across America on a bus. Birthdays have become a big deal for Terry. Her friends and relatives held a block party in Philadelphia on her 90th. On her 92nd, she received 40 cards, many of them from guests at the inn. Her celebration included dinner at Cucina Rosa and a trip to Rio Grande to see the movie, The Heat. Dave honored his mother on her birthday by purchasing a brick with her name on it on a walkway in Wilbraham Park, appropriate, considering how at home Terry now feels in

Cape May. She compares the view of the garden from the side door of her kitchen to Italy or Spain. “I feel like I belong here,” she said. “I live a nice happy life because I had a nice family and we all palled around together,” she said. “We all stuck together.” Terry’s maiden name was Gatto which means “cat” in Italian. Maybe she has nine lives like a cat. If so, she is currently only on her third, with six more to go.

Bird Droppings
I
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
DO not know why the first American Robin fledgling of the season always takes me by surprise and seems too early. My first thought just as it is every year — “Oh no, it can’t be summer already.” But it is. Once again, spring passed in a rush. Funny, but I never accuse autumn of arriving ahead of schedule when the first flocks of snow geese pass in September. I know it’s time for fall. Likewise, I don’t second guess the first courting American Woodcock in March or blame them of short-changing winter. This is particularly hard to understand since I love winter and have nothing but antipathy for summer. If it was up to me there would be three months of summer and five months of winter. American Robins can crank out plenty of young in just three months. They don’t need an extra several weeks. Four and four strikes me as just about the right allotment of months for spring and fall. I could be persuaded to trim one month from winter to make autumn in Cape May last five full months.
If there are baby robins out and about now, can this years’ crop of barn swallows be far behind? Then in a few short weeks the first southbound Yellow Warblers will be touching down in Cape May ushering in five weeks of autumn. I don’t know how non-birders gauge the progress of seasons. Maybe it’s the volume of traffic on the parkway, or how long it
takes to find a parking spot in Cape May, or the amount of quarters weighing down your pockets to keep the meters filled when you do find that parking spot. Or maybe it has to do with displays in shop windows. But for you shopkeepers who want to be in step with the season, here’s some inside information a little bird told me — it’s time for you to start your end-of summer sales. I’ll be sure to let you know when Yellow Warblers decide to call it a season so you don’t get stuck with a lot of unsold summer stock when autumn arrives in Cape May. Should be around the first week in August. If you are confused about the seasons on the calendar, stop over to the Cape May Bird Observatory, at 701 East Lake Drive Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts.

LIVE MUSIC
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
AM not in favor of public restrooms. I believe a man or woman (or indeed a small dog) should perform bodily evacuations in the privacy of one’s home, ideally whilst reading this very paper (which may or may not then be torn into long thin strips and hung on a handy rail for cleanup duties). But public restrooms rob a person of dignity, and make for all manner of awkward eye-contact and the need for idle chitchat, which is something else I am greatly opposed to. Plus, the sheer horror of placing one’s bare bottom on a seat that has just been vacated by a stranger and is still warm and, in some cases, damp, is without match. And those seats are often made of plastic, which ill suits the refined bottom that is accustomed to ivory, mahogany or at a push a basket of servants’ hands (the servants are still alive and attached to the hands, I must stress: they are, though, blindfolded so as not to catch sight of the D’Catur visage in mid throes of what my mother used to call “Potty Face”. No man can look a servant in the eye after that).
However, given our fair city has an official 12 million visitors a year, each bloated from consumption of ice cream, hot dogs, saltwater taffy and soda, that amounts to a tidal wave of pee, and a mountain of the other. And so I concede that we need more public restrooms, as the owners of some of the finer hotels in town are reporting queues of non-residents forming, each intent on leaving their mark without so much as a byyour-leave. So, I am delighted that a series of “Emergency Relief” portable lavatories are
to be dropped off in Cape May from this weekend. They are perfectly in keeping with the city on the outside, resembling nothing so much as a gingerbread cottage. Once inside, the “guest” is gripped with robotic arms and informed in polite automatic tones that they have 30 seconds to vacate bowels and bladder. This is no idle threat: efficiency is paramount and we cannot have hesitant dribblers returning time and again, causing lines to form and desperate tourists to consider guerilla pooping action around town. So at the count of 31 seconds, another automatic hand darts out bearing a pneumatic hosepipe. Worry ye not: the hand and pipe are heated to blood temperature, and are programmed for maximum tenderness given the three seconds they have to achieve the desired result. Of course, there will be an adjustment period, so if you come across a wandering Shoobie with an expression of mixed shock and delight and a glassy look in the eye, you will know to treat them gently, and offer them a seat with cushions.

Book Gift Certificate Giveaway
Every week, we ambush an unsuspecting citizen (or citizens) with a gift certificate to Cape Atlantic Book Company What is your name? My name is Jordan Rowan. And where are you from? Here! I live in Cape May. What do you do here in Cape May? I’m a food and beverage manager at Congress Hall. That’s a lot of responsibility! How do you manage it? With lots of hard work, the support of my staff and coworkers, and the comfort of knowing I live and work at the beach. How’s life in Cape May for a local? Busy! It’s great to have the crowds down here in the summer, but my favorite time of the year is the shoulder seasons, when it’s a little quieter but there is still a lot going on. Is there a book you always recommend? 1984, by George Orwell. PHOTOGRAPH AND INTERVIEW BY GABI URDA

Here’s To Your Health
A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club
T
HE number one excuse I hear from people about why they don’t workout is: “I just can’t find the time!” I believe that they think this is true, but I also think we make time for what is important to us. Many people are under the impression that it takes an hour or more, four to five times per week to get in shape. But unless you are training for an event, like a triathlon, or looking for out-ofthe-ordinary results, like deadlifting twice your body weight, a good effective workout can be done in about half an hour, three times a week. (BTW, the average person spends two hours per day on the internet, LOL.) Numerous studies have been done comparing short, high-intensity trainings and moderate, longer-duration workouts. (Tabata workouts were covered in this column a few months ago.) The good news is that you can get the same or better results in a fraction of the time. You need to be willing to plan ahead and work harder. You can’t use your age as an excuse; some of the fittest members of North Beach Gym are in the 60s and 70s. Scaling a program to account for you general overall
condition, in cardio, respiratory, skeletal and muscular areas is easy to acheive. Here is an example of an easy-to-follow workout: Warm-up: Windmill your arms forward and backward, do air squats, lunge slowly back and up, use a broomstick or pole as an assist in stretching and for overhead presses (place hands at either end, raise overhead, straighten arms, lower behind head.) Do a series of jumping jacks. A few quick yoga poses like Upward Dog and Child’s Pose will loosen your back muscles and, besides, they feel great. Sit in a deep, butt-to-floor squat for one minute with your heels flat on the floor and your knees pressed outward, back slightly arched.

(Squatting is the most important move to learn, and learn well. Sitting in chairs has ruined our ability to do something most of the world takes for granted: getting down and getting back up again.) If you have access to a foam roller, use it to massage your entire body. Workout: On the treadmill, walk fast or run for one minute, using the incline if neccessary, to get your heart rate up. Without a hear rate monitor, you should work on a scale of one to 10 at about a seven or eight of perceived exertion. Don’t be a dog and don’t be a super hero. After one minute, step off and do pushups — five reps for beginners, 12 for intermediates, and 20 for those who are advanced. Repeat the treadmill. Dumbbell shoulder presses: Use the same scale as above and start with a dumbbell you can handle easily, progressing to heavier. Repeat the treadmill. Do sit-ups next, (treadmill), reverse lunges, (treadmill), latt pulldowns (treadmill, insert exercise of your choosing. This workout should wear your butt out in 15 to 20... and get you results fast, too.

Dear Answer Lady, I went up to Rio Grande one day last week to catch a matinee and beat the heat. Some twit in front of me was texting the ENTIRE TIME, and the light from his iPhone was really distracting. I said nothing for the first 90 minutes, but as the final scene approached, I’d had enough. I politely asked him to stop texting or at least take it outside. He turned around and suggested something that’s not only rude but anatomically impossible, in front of his son, no less. So I dumped my soda in his lap, and the whole thing ended in fisticuffs. Not my fault, though... right? — Chilling Out Dear Chilling, The Answer Lady is appalled by this tale. Clearly, the gentleman in front of you was and may forever remain a twit, but you did nothing but point out to the poor

The Movie Column
H
This week, Arts Editor Tom Sims previews “20 Feet from Stardom”
OW many documentaries have you seen about backup singers? To me, this seemed a fantastic premise for a movie — like doing a film about character actors, ghost writers, or any other unsung hero in the arts. To some it may seem ridiculous, like a football movie about a water boy. Oh, wait… maybe there was a movie about that. Maybe there could be a movie about backup singers. Maybe it could be great. 20 Feet from Stardom is the best attempt you’re going to get. The film is star-studded with the likes of Jagger, Springsteen, Sting, and others, but the film is about backup singers — Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, and others — who never quite made it. Darlene Love sang lead on several songs originally attributed by music production giant Phil Spector to his star group, The Crystals. Love’s career was spotted with successes, even a number one hit, but never stardom. Merry Clayton’s background vocals on the Rolling Stones hit, “Gimme
The documentary focuses on the lives of backup singers that never made it big. Shelter” (“It’s just a shot away/It’s just a shot away”) is nothing short of magnificent. Yet her solo career was anything but. In the film, music giants like Springsteen and Sting seem caring, though Jagger comes off a little elitist. Overall, 20 Feet from Stardom is outstanding, but perhaps the film lasts about 20 minute too long. It explores the talent of these singers who are every bit as good as the mega stars for whom they provide background vocals, and it analyzes rea-
sons why they may not have made it to the top. I think focuses on fewer of these vocalists in more depth may have kept the film more focused and entertaining. In addition to perhaps being a little too long, the film never really gets you so swept up in the “underdog” element of backup singers not having their shot at fame. In the end, you’re happy to see Darlene Love be accepted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which was long overdue... but I wanted to be thrilled to see the event take place. Despite some shortcomings, the documentary is extremely well made by veteran music documentarian Morgan Neville. It is produced with a 60 Minutes quality of journalism that leaves you feeling well informed and better for having had the experience. Save the date! See some of the finest documentaries by New Jersey filmmakers screened for the first time in New Jersey. The Cape May Film Festival, October 25-27, will exclusively be at the Chalfonte Hotel. Email capemayfilm@hotmail.com to be kept informed of highlights for the event.

Activity Of The Week
A
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Princesses and Pirates
RE you the type who thinks an eye patch completes an outfit? Do you style your hair to accommodate your tiara? Then come to the Princesses and Pirates Luncheon presented by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC). Princesses and pirates have a lot in common — they get to wear cool outfits with great accessories, they get to boss people around, and they can make people give up their treasures just by waving a flag. Both are part of ancient traditions – kings and queens have always passed power through bloodlines, and piracy has been around since before the Vikings. Sometimes they help each other out. Royals often hired private pirates (privateers) to do their dirty work on the open sea. Of course, there is a downside. If you’re a princess, some relative or other is likely to lock you in a tower, put you to sleep for a hundred years, or ask the huntsman to cut out your heart. Or, you may have to marry an undesirable prince from the neighboring kingdom. If you’re a pirate, you look forward
Which are you: princess or pirate? to a short career that ends, as Blackbeard’s did, with your head stuck on some competitor’s bowsprit. You don’t have to know what a bowsprit is to know that you don’t want your head stuck on it. Or, after a trial, you’ll be chained to a wall in the Thames until you are drowned by the tides. Some found success in piracy. Captain Henry Morgan, a brutal pirate, was knighted and made governor of Jamaica, where he used all his tricks to capture

and hang other pirates. Some princesses do well, too. Queen Victoria allowed her daughters to marry for love, at least. But, as you do your vocational planning, consider that neither career has much of a future. Most modern princesses need to have a day job, and modern pirates are heavy on brutality and light on panache. The thing is, you don’t really want to be a princess or a pirate. You want to be a princess or a pirate in a story, and that’s the kind that pint-sized pretenders can be at the Princesses and Pirates Luncheon. Enjoy lunch and a story along with appropriate activities. For the gents, there is pirate gear, balloon swords, and lessons in pirate walking. The ladies enjoy dress-up and mini spa treatments. The Luncheon is held at the Physick Estate on Washington Street, August 2, 9, 16 and 23 at 11:30. Tickets are $23 for adults, $15 for children. Call MAC at 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278, or visit capemaymac.org for reservations; the event is limited to 20 children. Next week: The Porch at Elaine’s

Exit Zero A SPECIAL ISSUE TO COMMEMORATE THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF CAPE MAY’S SPRIGHTLY SHEET
¯
SUMMER 2013
Happy 10th Birthday To Cape May’s Peppiest Periodical! WELCOME to a very special edition of Exit Zero which celebrates the 10th anniversary of our launch. Yep, we first hit the streets on July 4, 2003. It’s been that long. Regular readers will notice a couple things... 1. We’re a LOT bigger than our regular edition — almost four times the size. This is because, to celebrate the historical theme, we wanted to look and feel like an
old Cape May newspaper from the 19th century. This theme is carried through into our ads, which were brilliantly executed by our graphic designer Doree Bardes. 2. This issue ain’t free! Why? Because we spoil you enough with the weekly edition. You can’t get EVERYTHING for free! It’s still a bargain at $1! To help us celebrate, we have featured 10 kids (either
locals or regular visitors) who are also 10 years old this year. You will see their photographs featured throughout the issue. Snappy idea, eh? What you’ll also find on these pages is a selection of some of our favorite articles of the past few years, which we feel provide a useful, inspiring package that’s meant to help you get the best out of your Cape May

WELCOME TO A NEW VOICE IN CAPE MAY YOU can buy T-shirts in town featuring the slogan, “Cape May, A drinking town with a Victorian problem.” Leaving aside the obvious point that those kinds of T-shirts, like novelty answermachine messages, stop being funny after around a tenth of a second, they still provide the kernel of a thought. Cape May doesn’t have a Victorian problem, but we at Exit Zero, the town’s new weekly entertainment newspaper, think it has something of an
image problem. The pioneering folks who saved Cape May in the 1970s by getting together to preserve its Victorian heritage, in the face of a blinkered city council, cannot receive enough praise, and their legacy lives on through the good works of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts. In fact, it’s hardly a legacy since most of them are still alive, kicking and contributing as much as ever. However... Cape May is more than just the finest collection of Victorian architecture in the country. It’s America’s original beach

resort, and we think that’s an image that needs to be cultivated. Not to the detriment of the Victorian message, but in conjunction with it. We often hear people in this town waxing on about Martha’s Vineyard, the Hamptons and Key West. And to be sure, they’re all beautiful beach resorts. But think about it: what do these places have that Cape May lacks (okay, we’ll give Key West the nod for total hours of sunshine)? As well as boasting a Victorian wonderland that ranks among the finest Continued on Page Two

F YOU’VE been reading the papers lately, maybe you’re bracing yourself for insect catastrophe. We’re referring to the 17-year cicadas known as Brood II which have been growing underground for — you guessed it — 17 years. They’ll emerge locust-style — up to one billion of them per square mile, according to the The Huffington Post — when the soil reaches 64 degrees. A repulsive siege, in the oh-so-scary words of the news media, will take over the east coast, from the Carolinas to New York, essentially ruining your summer and your lunch. The Philly Post predicted a Garden State Parkway covered in “an apocalyptic swarm of screeching bug-missiles on rumspringa.” So… should you be hiding your children? Packing up and heading west? Plugging your ears with balls of cotton when you sleep? We called an expert to find out what we can expect in Cape May. “You can expect to be disappointed,” said Michael Raupp, Professor of Entomology at the University of Maryland. Uh-oh, we thought… We’re really in for it. “Cape May is a little out of the range. The nearest counties to you guys that will experience the Brood are Atlantic, Cumberland, and Burlington.” Huh? Then why should we disappointed, we asked of Michael. Sounds to us like we dodged a bullet. Or, in the words of The Philly Post, billions of bug missiles. We’re avoiding a summer of sweeping crunchy exoskeletons from our porches... that’s what the 17-years leave behind after they mate and die, according to National Geographic. And we’re bypassing the deafening song the male cicadas create when courting the females… a noise that will cause permanent hearContinued On Page 15

APE May is a little like that annoying kid in high school who received all the awards — dean’s list, MVP, perfect attendance, you name it. Our National Historic Landmark city and its assets have been honored time and again. Remember our placement on Budget Travel’s “10 Coolest Small Towns in America” list in 2012? Or how about TripAdvisor naming Sunset Beach the 24th best sandy stretch in the nation? The Albert Stevens Inn on Myrtle Avenue? It’s 18th in the world’s B&b rankings, also according to TripAdvisor. And the Mission Inn on New country. Jersey Avenue? Number 25 in the
You might think another award would be ho-hum at this point, but the most recent honor bestowed upon our charmed city — a number five designation among the Top 10 Best Beach Towns in the country, according to a recent Parents magazine article — has us buzzing. Never mind that Parents has a readership over two million strong and a Facebook page with nearly one million likes — it’s the methodology behind their Top 10 piece that caught our attention. “I use the TripAdvisor service, myself,” article author and Parents Contributing Editor Karen Cicero told us. “And of course we value but our surveys are not typically comprised of only that.” people’s anecdotal experiences,
Instead, Karen, who says the piece had a year-long gestation period, started out by removing all towns with poor water quality from the running, using information provided by the National Resources Defense Council. “I was surprised,” she said. “We began with hundreds, and eliminated about 50 percent right there.” After that, Karen knocked out all beach spots with no lifeguarding services (at least another third). “Parents are watching their own kids on the beach,” Karen said, “but rip currents can happen any time, and having a trained professional is important.” At this point, Cape May was still in the running, so Karen called the city to see
about one not-so-minor detail — whether or not we suffered great devastation, like so many of our unfortunate neighbors to the north, at the hands of Hurricane Sandy. “It made me very happy to hear that Cape May had been spared,” said Karen, who is herself a Cape May vacation vet. “I have a 10-year-old daughter, Katie, who we brought to Cape May about two years ago,” she told us. “I live in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and my family has vacationed often in Wildwood, but I always wanted to try Cape May, and I was charmed by it, from beginning to end. We loved the old-fashioned carnival nights offered by Congress Hall, the welcoming vibe of the city. My daughter still asks to go

back.” (Check out a blog post on Karen’s Cape May experience by visiting parents.com/blogs/ goodyblog/2013/05/33709/.) Karen was especially impressed with the Nature Center on Delaware Avenue. “It was Katie’s favorite memory,” she told us. “She participated in a program that allows kids to cast their net into the ocean, and discover the little critters that come into it. The experience stuck with her. And I remember thinking how affordable it was.” It is inland activities like this that were also taken into account
