Talk Of The Town

RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS

Herman’s Hermits at their peak in the 1960s — they have sold more than 80 million records but they made more money last year than any time during their heyday. They play Cape May Convention Hall this Monday, August 12.

It’s tough to litter in Caper May... without getting called out by fellow beachgoers.

WHEN Herman’s Hermits step on stage at Cape May Convention Hall this Monday, August 12 for a sold-out gig, they will be the biggest-selling act to play the one-year old facility. The band, fronted by Peter Noone, has sold more than 80 million records since signing their first record contract, almost 50 years ago. “We don’t mention it, we say it’s the 20th year,” says Noone with a laugh. Herman’s Hermits spent years criss-crossing England playing small clubs before signing a record contract in 1964 and scoring big hits with songs like “Mrs Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter,” and “I’m Henry the Eighth, I Am.” Despite enjoying their popular heyday in the 60s, the band made more money from record sales last year than any time in the past 50 years — chalk that up to the greediness of record companies back in the day and the ability of savvy bands to engineer income from the internet. Touring has always been a “big adventure,” says Noone, who will not be hiding in a hotel room when he arrives in Cape May on Monday afternoon. “I’m a cultural anthropologist, I like to walk around the town I’m playing so I’ve got stuff to talk about when I’m on stage,” he says. “I’ll know more about Cape May than anybody else who’s not from Cape May by the time I get on stage.” Playing 900-seat Convention Hall is not a come down for Noone, who played 20,000 seat arenas in the 60s. “Every gig is better than the first place we played,” he said. ¯ WE’VE been walking the Exit Zero puppies on Higbee Beach since they were born, nine years ago, and have had little trouble with other dog-owners in that time. But since we added another two members to the Tan Gang there have been a few anxious moments of late — in fact, we had blowups Candace three days in a row this week. We understand that having four O’Donnell in costume for her dogs approach your dog(s) might be a little intimidating at one-woman first but when a dog owner throws a full-on tizzy, for no good show about reason, guess what happens? It puts YOUR dog in a panic, and Mary Lincoln, performed at sometimes OURS, too. Higbee Beach is a paradise for dogs, and for relaxed the Chalfonte dog owners. So, please... take a chill pill. Dogs sometimes growl at each other, on August 10 and 24. just as people sometimes growl at each other. But unlike some people, dogs get Photograph by Aleksey Moryakov over it really fast.

Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Robert Edwards of Reynoldsburg, OH. How long have you been coming to Cape May? Since 1973. What do you like about it? I like nearly everything. If I had to zero in on one or two things in particular, I’d have to say that I like the beaches, and I like how easy it is to walk around the town. What’s your favorite place? My house. We are Cape May property owners, and my favorite place is where we live. Least favorite thing about Cape May? That ties into my previous answer. It’s a good thing it’s so easy to walk around here, because it’s impossible to drive. What is your favorite restaurant? The Ugly Mug. And your favorite store? We love the Exit Zero Store, it’s one of our favorite places to shop in. What do you like about Exit Zero? Well, I like the color issues the most. And in the black-andwhite issues, I always scan the pictures and read the Talk of the Town article. I like that one a lot, I like to find out about what’s happening in City Hall. What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I’ve got no complaints. It’s a great publication, and my wife and I devour it from cover to cover as soon as it arrives in the mail. What’s your T-shirt size? XL. Want to join our army of subscribers — there are hundreds of them in nearly 30 states! Call us on 609-770-8479 or buy one online at ezstore.us. It’s $50 for all 47 BW issues PLUS our six color issues.

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above. If you think you know this establishment (hint: this is the extent of it!), you could win a gift certificate for a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

¯ ONE of our writers has spent a great deal of time visiting Lace Silhouettes on the Washington Street Mall recently, as so many of her friends are currently engaged (she’s been charged with the buying of the obligatory lingerie, to be presented at obligatory wedding showers/ bachelorette parties). Most recently, it was a groom’s gift — a pair of cotton boxers with the word “TAKEN” printed along the front — that she needed to pick up, at the request of one particularly cheeky bride. Every time our writer sets foot in this store, she feels the need to tell the world what a wonderful job is done by the women who work here. The employees are attentive and very knowledable (they can differentiate between all types of stick-on bras, which work well for all types of backless bridesmaid dresses), but are never overbearing or pushy... and the merchandise — wedding related and not, cheeky and otherwise — is the last-forever kind. We’ll be back again soon, for a pair of lacy, ‘I Do’-printed unmentionables. ¯ “PEOPLE ask me if I think she was out of her mind, and I tell them, ‘Absolutely, she was,’” says Candace O’Donnell about former First Lady and wife of Honest Abe, Mary Todd Lincoln, “but she had every right to be.” Candace wrote, along with husband John, the one-woman show about the woman’s life — Mary Todd Lincoln: Much Madness is Divinest Sense — which she’ll be performing at the Chalfonte Hotel on August 10 and 24 at 8pm. You’ll learn all sorts of things you never got from a textbook in middle school history class, like what “great sexual chemistry” existed

between Abe and Mary, how severe Mary’s shopping really was, how “down” Mary married, and how poorly the press really thought of her. Appropriately, the show will take place in the Henry Sawyer Room of the Chalfonte Hotel, with its own fascinating links to the Civil War... links that will be illuminated during John’s introduction. Reserve tickets in advance by calling 609-884-8409... and head’s up, this is a cashonly performance. ¯ THANK YOU to whoever left the handwritten note on Baltimore Avenue Beach, calling out the “trashy” smokers who dropped at least six butts on the sand... and left them there. And thank you to Rita Lynn Lyman of North Wildwood for sending us a picture of this sign, so that we can all remember: people who are appalled by littering — especially near our oceans — will always outnumber the numbskulls who do it. ¯ WE MAY live in the birding capital of the world — you’ll see around 300 species a year come through Cape May, as this is a migratory stopover point, according to local birder and author of the Crossly ID Guide Series, Richard Crossley — but it’s a hobby that fascinates the world over. One year ago, representatives from five continents came together to launch an international grassroots movement meant to unite birders during an outreach weekend, August 23-25. Whether you’re an amateur or a seasoned spotter of winged things, you, too, can make the Pledge by “making a comittment to inspire and foster an appreciation of birds in others.” (Read the Pledge at pledgetofledge.org.) This comittment can be anything from hanging a simple hummingbird feeder in your own backyard, to taking a crosscountry trip that culminates in some great Alaskan birdwatching, to (shameless self-plug alert) simply reading about such a trip, recently completed by Richard himself, in our upcoming color issue, which arrives this week.

The Old Fogey

A

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

UGUST is a weird month. This comes about from a variety of reasons. For a start there’s the traditional Cape May “Gods of Fall” Festival, which centers around the ritual sacrifice of a Shoebie and guarantees us a pleasant winter. You will not find this in the regular guide books, of course — it did appear in the volume “Human Sacrifices, Blood Feuds and Ritual Murders in Cape May and Environs”, in 1923, but the print run was only 300 copies, and none remain in circulation). And of course there’s the arrival later in the month of some few score Witches, who stop in on their flight south to have a malt in the Brown Room and lay curses on the heads of anyone rash enough to bother them. That does add to the “weird” factor, especially when there’s a score of misshapen young lads running through the town after being rebuffed in their efforts to court one of the younger comelier witches. Likewise, August 23 is the anniversary of the mysterious sinking of the Original Cape May back in 1825, when a freak wave

(or a kraken: reports are conflicting) swept the town away one night. Nothing was recovered. Not the life-sized, solid-gold jewelencrusted statue of Cortez, nor the Ark of the Covenant (it was being used as a doorstop by the vicar at the time). Never seen again was the “Heart of Wildwood”, the fabled ruby that legend held was the combined goodness and humanity of the citizens of that place all bound up by magic in one gemstone. It was very obviously was never returned to that benighted place.

But it is possible, I swear to you, if you walk to the water’s edge opposite Uncle Bill’s Pancake House at the stroke of midnight, to hear, over the lap of the waves, the sound of bagpipes. Surely it is the remains of one of those long-drowned infernal instruments, caught in the current for eternity, and not, as ghost-hunters claim, the ghost of Red Rab McTavish (the official Bagpiper of those days) inflicting the awful sound on us from beyond the grave. And yes, Cape May did at one point have an official Bagpiper. I did my best to end this tradition, and confess that while I was sad to see a sizeable part of the city drown like this, it was almost worth it to have the nightly drone of the pipes end. We are safe from any return of this unholy tradition, as the ancient charter only allows the position (and the annual stipend of ten guineas) to be held by an authentic “true born Scotchman of unusual strength and girth, red of face and coarse of tongue, loud of voice and intemperate of mood”, and where would we find one of those in our fair city these days, I ask you?

Here’s To Your Health

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

T

HE brain is getting a lot of press these days, not only because it’s endlessly fascinating but because the Boomers are forgetting where they put their eyeglasses at an alarming rate. (And their passwords, kids’ names, and “those damn car keys!”). According to a fascinating article by Patricia Marx in The New Yorker, humans are the only animals whose brains are known to atrophy as we grow older and the only animals to suffer from Alzheimer’s. She writes “…but in the past few years scientists and entrepreneurs have been claiming that there are measures one can take to minimize, slow down, or even reverse cognitive decline.” It’s now known that the brain has plasticity. When I read this I thought of Play-doh. But that’s not accurate. Rather, it is able to add computing/thinking capacity and does so whenever you take on a new task. (Doing crossword puzzles has come to represent the epitome of mental gymnastics for the elderly but once you’ve mastered a skill the benefits don’t accrue the same way anymore.) Capacity is created by the addition of new neurons which in turn connect to make new

neuronal pathways and networks which communicate chemically and electrically encoded data to one another. And everything you’ve ever thought, spoken, heard or seen is stored in these networks. There is a part of the brain whose job it is to ensure survival, and it has access to this stored data and keeps you from walking in front of a moving bus or grabbing the wrong end of a knife. It assesses risk with lightning speed to warn us of any sort of danger. The down side of this is that it often works overtime calling out threats where none exist which can lead to anxiety and stress. According to Kenneth Kosik, who was interviewed by Marx for the

the flying fish studio 130 park blvd west cape may

article and is the owner of Cottage Center for Brain Fitness in Santa Barbara, controlling your blood pressure is the best way to minimize Vascular dementia which is the second most prevalent dementia behind Alzheimer’s. Stress causes the body to release cortisol which bombards the neurons which over time causes them to die and for the hippocampus to shrivel. (No one wants a shriveled anything .) In 2012, the industry that’s devoted to slowing or reversing the aging of the brain generated over a billion dollars in business. Marx mentions a book called Keep your brain alive: 83 Neurobic Exercises to Help Prevent Memory Loss and Increase Mental Fitness by Lawrence Katz and Manning Rubin. These exercises are designed to break a routine and involve one or more of our senses in a novel way. (Wow, that could be a whole night of fun.) They mention brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand. (What nerdy researchers do for entertainment.) Some of the companies that provide products and services in this new field: Luminosity, Brain Games, MindSpark, Your Brain Coach, and Nintendo’s Brain Age.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. This week’s column is a modified repeat of one originally published around Mother’s Day, 2010. You may have been assuming that the Answer Lady was simply born wise and empathetic to the problems of others. This is not entirely true, as she was raised by the wisest and kindest of women, her mother Pat. You’ll indulge the Answer Lady as she observes the upcoming anniversary of her mother’s passing by sharing some of Pat’s most important life lessons with you. No one is better than you. Just because someone has more money, a larger house or a fancier car, more education or a more “important” job than you, it does not make them better than you. Each of us has unique gifts. Remember, no one can make you feel inferior without your permission. You’re not better than anyone else. Same

lesson, inside out. You’re no better than the person cleaning restrooms, the busboy clearing your table, or the woman pumping your gas. No people are beneath you; the only thing beneath you is the ground. Everyone deserves courtesy, respect and a smile. Family first. Your job is important, your friends are important, your hobbies are important, but nothing comes before family, no matter what form your particular family may take. Nothing.

The Theater Column

O

This week, Arts Editor Tom Sims reviews “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” at East Lynne Theater

RIGINALLY published in 1820, Washington Irving’s short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, tells of Ichabod Crane, the new school master in Tarrytown, New York, who is not held in high esteem by townspeople. Crane is warned of the ghosts who visit the town. The most notorious is a soldier whose head was blown clean off during a battle — and he is rumored to haunt the town looking for it. When the story comes to life by East Lynne Theater Company, you know why The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has been held in such regard for nearly two centuries. The most remarkable features of the production are an outstanding adaptation, astounding cast, and precise direction. The script captures the nature of the characters and movement of the plot, and each of the six actors moves the storytelling as if there were two times the players. James Rana, playwright, wrote ELTC’s world premiere play, The Poe Mysteries, last year. In The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, his tall

Ichabod (Matt Baxter Luceno) giving Katrina (Elisa Pupko) a music lesson... task was to tell the story with an emphasis on the context within which the story was meant to be told. Rana stays true to the story – in the end you’re not sure with whom you’re supposed to feel sympathy, yet you get wrapped up in the mystery nonetheless. Matt Baxter Luceno’s performance as Ichabod Crane was endearing, yet a bit creepy — very true to the character in the book. Each of the other actors played no fewer than three characters each, some as

many as four or five. Elisa Pupko was completely charming as Katrina Van Tassel, the love interest for both Crane and Brom Bones, played perfectly by Justin Bennett. Suzanne Dawson set the tone for the suspicion and anger of the town, and John Cameron Weber portrayed the more tempered and reasonable character of Katrina’s father. Thomas Raniszewski was the actor with the most compelling transformation from one scene to another. The entire cast was so outstanding that my niece, who had joined me, asked after the curtain call, “Where was the other actor who played the farmer?” This play was engaging and it moved. The sets were simple and effective in setting the mood and allowed your imagination to see the gluttony of Crane’s bottomless stomach, and the fear and prejudice in the town. Hats off (but keep your head) for Gayle Stahlhuth, Artistic Director, and Lee O’Connor, Technical Director, for setting the mood of a classic tale. Learn more about the production by calling 609-884-5898.

Activity Of The Week

S

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: The Porch at Elaine’s

UMMER is the perfect time to relax on the front porch in Cape May. The front porch is an allAmerican space, which some scholars have linked to our idealized view of nature. The porch, like most American things, evolved in a hybrid fashion. The word comes from the Latin “porta,” for gate, or “portico,” for covered walkway, but Europeans largely favored courtyards or loggias over porches. A roofed, raised structure in front of the home is common in warm climates, so the porch may have been brought to America by the enslaved Africans who built some of our earliest homes. During its heyday, from the end of the Civil War to about 1920, the American front porch served as a semi-public space to connect us to our communities. You could speak to your neighbors from the porch or invite them to sit for a while. You could watch courting couples stroll or kids play tag. There was more privacy on the back porch, but there was also the smelly out-

Look out on Cape May from the comfort of a cozy front porch. house and garbage heap. The front porch was tranquil and cool. It might be furnished with a swing or a rocking chair, or with a few kitchen chairs, but the porch was the portal to the community. Porches faded in popularity, perhaps because cars made the streets noisy, air conditioning made the house cool, or radio made interior life more entertaining, but Cape May’s porches still have a lot to offer. Elaine’s Boutique Hotel now offers

breakfast, lunch and dinner on the porch, with music six nights a week. From their Lafayette Street vantage point, you can relax over a leisurely meal and watch Cape May go by. Try it on your first day in town, and it’s like a Cape May sampler. Enjoy a breakfast seafood frittata and be inspired by the surfers returning from the beach. As you finish your dinner of blackened tilapia, watch people streaming out of the dinner theater or Cape May Stage and decide, based on their smiling faces, to see a show tomorrow. Sip the cocktail of the day, notice a chic outfit and plan some shopping. Bring your kids or revel in the fact that they are away at camp and it’s just the two of you. Depending on the evening, you may hear steel drums, or a duo with a guitars, or a guy who lets the customers take lead vocals on “Sweet Caroline.” Sometimes there’s a special event, but when you’re in the heart of Cape May, on vacation, and you get to see a little of everything, every night is kind of special. The porch is open; come and sit a spell. Next week: Surf’s Up

SABLE is a handsome purebred Chow Chow. He is very well-behaved and social. He does have a little trouble seeing, so he tends to get caught off guard. Sable is not used to children, so he’ll be better off as as an only child. His owners were senior citizens who couldn’t care for him any longer, and he missses them dearly, but he can’t wait to find a new home... and friend. Sable’s adoption fee is only $8.

«

KING is a whip-smart, frisky, majesticlooking boxer/pit mix. In August 2012, King was approximately nine months old and he may have been abandoned by his owner at that time. He was a little anxious around strangers, but once he warms up, everyone finds him quite charming, playful and sweet. King is not recommended for a home with very young children, but only because he doesn’t know his own strength. $95.

«

HUNTER is a large adult labrador retriever and American staffordshire terrier mix. He has tons of energy and loves to play! He doesn’t get along with other pets, but he loves the company of older kids who will play with him and tire him out. He especially loves going on walks and chasing after tennis balls. Even though Hunter is playful, he is also well-behaved and mannerly... and ready for a new home. The adoption fee is $95.
