Talk Of The Town

RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS

Have you stopped by Elaine’s yet for a cocktail on their breezy front porch?

Cape May A to Z, a coffee table book/children’s book, is on sale now.

WE HAVE, on occasion, seen grumpy guests of establishments in Cape May (and everywhere else) act in such entitled, demeaning ways, one could hardly begrudge an employee of the customer service industry an eye roll or two… or a HalfBaked-style storm out mid-shift. And yet, there are servers, bartenders, counter workers and business proprietors in this town who are able to keep smiling, despite inevitable interactions with the odd sour apple, because they genuinely enjoy what they do, and it shows.

Case in point? We recently witnessed a scene at Sunset Beach Gifts on Sunset Boulevard, during which a little girl accidentally broke a small piece of merchandise. At the request of her mother, she found an employee — gift shop manager Sharon Booth — to tell. Sharon offered kind words about often breaking merchandise herself but, by this point, the guilty-feeling little girl was inconsolable.

Instead of simply moving on to the next customer in a long line of patiently waiting customers, Sharon excused herself, retreated to the back of the store, and returned with a “necklace of forgiveness.”

The gift, prompting the child’s mother to say, “See, honestly really is the best policy,” seemed to calm the little girl. It also brought a tear to the eye of Exit Zero’s Advertising Director, Jason Black, who assured us he did not need a necklace in order to stop crying.

Thanks for a job well done, Sunset Beach. ¯ LAST Sunday, we biked to the porch of Elaine’s on Lafayette Street for some cocktails (pear martinis and old fashioneds, if you need to know) at dusk. We’ve been to shows at Elaine’s Dinner Theatre, and we’ve imbibed at their beautiful bar, Phinney’s Pub, afterward, but this was our first time Don’t miss out checking out the porch scene since the spot was opened for on 80s Open Mic Nights in the breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks this season. Our verdict?

What is your favorite restaurant? There’s so many good ones to choose from, but my favorite is definitely the Washington Inn. And your favorite store? My favorite store is, without a doubt, the Whale’s Tale.

What do you like about Exit Zero? Again, the question is what dont I like? It’s a great publication and I really enjoy it. So the answer is that I like everything about it!

What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? Nothing. I don’t have a single bad thing to say about it.

Check it out before word gets out… ¯ CAPE May is full of animal lovers — we take our dogs to the BillMae Cottage for yappy hour, and to the Rusty Nail for their own Bowser Beer, for goodness sake. Someone even told us recently that he spotted a man resting under a tree with his cat… on a leash. Our pets are just as much a part of our family as our actual family members — sometimes even more so — which is why it’s so terrible to think we might be totally unaware of a potentially devastating threat to their health: the plants in our own backyards.

Last week, we spoke with a reader and Cape May Point resident who picked some lilies from her property as a gift for a friend in recovery following an operation. She put them in a vase and brought them inside, where she noticed one of her two cats, Woody, chewing on three of the plants’ leaves. “He’s a muncher,” she said.

Fortunately, this reader had the good sense to do some Googling, and she learned that lilies are incredibly toxic for cats. She called the ASPCA’s poison control line and spoke with a representative who advised her to seek help straightaway. In the end, Woody was fine, but only because he spent four days receiving fluids intravenously at the Ocean View Veterinary Hospital, and having his renal function monitored there and at Cape Veterinary Hospital. It was a close call, as it only takes one lilly leaf to cause the kidneys of a kitten to shut down completely.

Not that there’s anything wrong with pop music; I play pop music and I make a living off of it. It’s just that, in my opinion, the 80s was the last era of real music.”

It’s a feeling that makes Mike the perfect MC/ drummer for one of the coolest live music events in town: 80s Open Mics happening at the Boiler Room every Sunday through Labor Day weekend.

Mike’s other band – the ROCK boys – provides the soundtrack, you provide the vocals for whichever tune you like. “’Blister in the sun’ is popular,” Mike says. You can also sub in on an instrument – drums, bass, keyboards, or guitar – if you feel so inclined.

Last weekend, the venue was packed with people of every demographic, according to Mike.

“There’s a great energy because the Boiler Room is one of the sexiest bars in town,” he said. “I just wish more locals would come out to participate.”

So show ‘em what you’ve got, Cape May. Turn up — neon pink sweatbands optional — this Sunday from 10pm to 1am. And don’t worry about having to get up early in the morning… it’ll be just another manic Monday anyway.

¯ TWO years ago, local artists Janet Payne and Paige Cunningham paired up with the goal of making a children’s book… or, more accurately, they paired up with the goal of having the community make a children’s book.

Along with a group of local photographers, the women took pictures of various Cape Mayrelated things, all beginning with a different letter of the alphabet. The photos were then blown up to 20 inches by 20 inches and cut into 64 squares each. At various places — the West Cape May Farmers’ Market, schools, the Washington Street Mall, etc — people of every age would color

a square using oil pastels, to create a mosaic.

“The hardest thing was convincing people they really could color,” Janet told us.

“Some would say, ‘I haven’t colored since I was a kid… and being an artist, that to me is like: ‘WHAT?!’” On the final page is a list of everyone who manned up and grabbed a pastel. If you’ve spent any time in Cape May, it’s likely you’ll recognize and artist or two.

The pirates might just be the greatest draw.

“We will perform a few of our live combat fight shows,” Captain Black told us. “We throw in a little of everything action, history, drama, and comedy.” And they enjoy every minute of it.

“Historic Cold Spring Village is one of several charity shows that we perform during the year,” he said. “Its a wonderful place for children and adults to learn about life in Early America. We have tremendous respect for the people who donate their time to this and are proud to do our share on Seafarers’ Weekend. After all,

Pirates played a big role in Early Maritime America.”

And that’s a message the pirates relay, as much as possible, through re-enactments. “We feel they are the very best way to convey and teach history,” Captain Black said. “For when it is delivered in this manner of garb and dialogue, it not only captures children’s attention, is also stimulates their imagination.”

Expect photo ops with the pirate characters, plenty of pirate bantor, sword fighting lessons, and historical demonstrations that include the handling and firing of marine Cannons.

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

AM done with Yorkshire Terriers!

Done, do you hear me? I am shouting this out loud, as my manservant, Kitchener, takes down my column for that salty rag I write for. I WAS going to write about the long-forgotten location of Captain Kidd’s treasure, until just now that is.

Long-forgotten, until I happened to receive a powerful blow to the head as I walked through my Trophy Room en route to the drawing room not five minutes ago. A weighty stuffed Bengal Tiger head (from my less enlightened days: I keep my gruesome and shameful souvenirs around to remind me that I have a debt to repay to the earth, and also because I do like the feel of tiger skin under my out-stretched fingertips as I walk past) had somehow come loose the exact second I walked under it, and bore me to the floor.

One of the sharpened incisors would have pierced my heart if it had not been deflected by my lucky silver cigarillo case which I carry in my breast pocket at all times. Oddly, that is the tenth incident of

late, that could be called “unlikely” and “potentially fatal”. If not for my ninja skills I would be dead a dozen times over. I am beginning to think someone is out to get me.

Why, if I didn’t know better I would think it might be Kitchener, unable to take any more of my affectionate ribbing/physical assault/ mental torture.

Anyways, I was all set to tell you where the gold treasure is buried, when my train of thought was derailed by Young Albert dragging in something he had killed on the beach, and I forgot again. I am livid, (a)

because the location of the treasure is yet again gone from my mind, (b) because there is now quite a mess on the drawing room floor, and (c) because once again we have a murder to cover up.

It’s just a Shoebie, you say, and I say nay, nay, thrice nay. Do you remember the LAST time we had a serial killer in these parts, and tourists were vanishing, only to be found on the beach one week later, completely drained of blood? Well, visitor numbers fell, people started to complain and in the end we had to stake our only vampire, Bob Stibbins.

Lovely fellow, too, a whizz at chess, a great raconteur in The Brown Room (at night) and never once ate a local in all his years.

So I am done with Yorkies, and am planning to replace the miscreant with another breed. No amount of cowering and wagging that tail will erase the murder, Albert, do you hear me? NONE! A corpulent man in white unbranded sneakers lies dead because of you! Well, ok, but no treats for a week, do you hear me! You cheeky boy! I’m still mad, but look at those eyes, yes, you! Come here for a cuddle!

Here’s To Your Health

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

HE skilled use of marketing techniques has been responsible for the overwhelming popularity of everything from bananas, an exotic and previously unheard of fruit, sold to the American public by a wealthy business man named Samuel Zemurray in the early part of the last century, to CocaCola, the iconic sugary drink which rots your teeth. In the past, claims were made that had little to no basis in reality because, frankly, no one was fact checking. Cigarettes were sold by doctors claiming they were good for your overall health. These, and other products from the “olden days,” have been around so long that no one is alive to recall when they weren’t available everywhere. Recent history, though, provides a list of everyday products whose supposed attributes we take for granted and whose claims, though fact checked and found in error, manage to live in the culture as truth.

One such product is milk.

The little milk mustache is a brilliant piece of advertising which brings to mind being young and sweet and innocent; back before you grew up and things got complicated. And

the “Milk. It does a body good” campaign was pretty bold and clear. We all have been told that the calcium in milk builds “strong bones” and helps prevent osteoporosis. But a little research starts blowing holes in that udder pretty quickly. First of all, not all milk is the same. Much of why you might want to drink milk in the first place gets killed off in the pasteurization process. According to Dr. Mercola, “…it renders much of the calcium contained in raw milk insoluble…” He feels there has been an over emphasis on calcium to the detriment of other equally important minerals.

In fact, most humans around the world cannot easily digest cow milk,” he writes. Dark leafy greens are a great source of not only calcium, but vitamins and minerals which aren’t present in milk.

One of the first recommendations I make to a member who asks me about what to eat is that they drop dairy products. (Eggs are not dairy, though they are sold that way) Most of them think I’m kidding. “No CHEESE? No ICE CREAM?” is a normal response. “OK,” I say, “then cut back on them.” For most of us, the pain of continuing a habit has to outweigh the pleasure or we won’t change. I was having continual allergies for years in my 20s. It was days on end of sneezing and being unable to breathe through my nose, sleepless nights and allergy meds that made me drowsy all day. A nutritionist suggested I give up dairy. I was desperate enough to try it. Within months I started seeing results.

Don’t get me wrong, I do miss it, especially ice cream. And cream cheese. But I like being pain free more.

The Movie Column

This week, Cape May Film Society President Dottie Knapp reviews “Monsters University” and “Despicable Me 2”

I

N DESPICABLE Me, Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) was a super villain, but in this newest movie he is now a family man, trying to make an honest living in the jam business. When a secret laboratory is stolen from its base in the Arctic, he is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to help catch a new bad guy.

Everyone is back in Despicable Me 2 — Dr. Nafario, who isn’t all that happy or successful at jam making, the three adorable little girls, and of course the minions that are being systematically kidnapped.

Gru is busy being a dad, and meanwhile his eldest daughter is being seduced by the son of the presumed dead super villain El Macho (voiced by Benjamin Bratt), and he is dealing with his growing feelings for a new character, Lucy (voiced by Kristin Wiig), who is a scatterbrained agent for the AntiVillain League. The movie is cute, the characters are cute and of course the minions are cute — you have to be as black hearted as the evil villain El Macho not to love them.

Monsters vs. Minions: which do you prefer? etiquette is to sit through the credits, listen and enjoy the sound track that someone has thoughtfully mixed. But let me add another reason to do so. And this especially goes out to that dad with two kids who felt the need to text during the film and subsequently made it difficult for this senior’s eyes to adjust to the light... while, also, making me wish I had a pea shooter. You missed the best part of Despicable Me 2. As the credits rolled and the music played we were treated to the minions’

“audition tapes.” They were the funniest part of the movie and the most inventive use of 3-D, but still delightful in 2-D. While I enjoyed Despicable me 2, I liked Monsters University better. It could be that I just liked the color pallet better, or I found the inventiveness of each of the monsters more interesting than the Despicable Me 2 characters.

Billy Crystal and John Goodman once again voice Mike and Sully, and the story revolves around their developing friendship.

Helen Mirren, (voicing Dean Hardscrabble) flowed through this cartoon with a fluidity that put the ring wraiths to shame. Lessons about fitting in, leadership and responsibility couldn’t be missed by even the youngest viewer, lessons that all of us need to learn or be reminded of. And, just maybe, I’m coming to the realization that I prefer prequels to sequels.

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Surf’s Up

ERE in Cape May, the early bird catches the wave. Cape May has a long surfing tradition, though it may not go back as far as the Victorian era, when travelers like Mark Twain wrote enthusiastic reports about Polynesian surfers.

Cape May surfers don’t necessarily fit the Beach Boys stereotype. You may not recognize them off the beach (they look like regular men and women, some past middle age) but they tend to have a sunnier outlook on life. They surf for an hour or two when they can, sometimes before they go off to work. Why not try the sport that makes them all so happy?

Locals will tell you that autumn is the best time to surf Cape May, but summer isn’t too shabby. Whether you learn from a friend or pay an instructor, your lesson will likely start on the beach. The instructor will go through safety rules and the mechanics that will get you upright. It all sounds simple, and for many students it is. For some of us, it’s not so simple. Luckily, you don’t have

Generally, your instructor will provide a board to learn on, and you don’t need any other equipment. Wear a bathing suit and sunscreen, and consider a rashguard for extra coverage. Consider multiple lessons before you go out on your own. If you fall in love with it, you can buy your own surfboard and other equipment at Summer Sun on the Washington Street Mall.

Steger’s Beach Service, who pointed us to instructor Jason Reagan. He has experience with new surfers of all ages, even uncoordinated adults. His focus is on safety, so he pays careful attention to weather and wave conditions when arranging the lessons. Call 609-827-2194 for reservations and information. Ocean Outfitters in Wildwood is another good choice. Call 609-729-7400 for information on private lessons ($55 per hour), semi-private ($45), or the Wave Party ($40 per person for four people).

If you’ve surfed before, ask a fellow surfer about the local etiquette. This is more than diplomacy — it’s about safety.

Although surfing is a great workout, it also has risks, so pay attention. Non-surfing parents should know enough to safely monitor children. Watching Point Break or Gidget doesn’t count.

Not ready to step into liquid? Get up early in the morning and stroll over to Poverty Beach or the Cove and you can watch surfers in action. You may be inspired to catch a wave.
