Congrats, PSI THE Peter Shields Inn has been named one of the Top 100 Most Romantic Restaurants in the country by reservation website, OpenTable. PSI is one of only two spots in the state to make the cut. “I was very surprised,” owner Jeff Gernitis told us. “When you consider all the fabulous restaurants throughout the United States, this is quite the honor for us at PSI.” Way to go!

“Night For Nate” A Success LAST Saturday, we attended the Seventh Annual Night for Nate benefit at the Avalon Golf Club... an event which raises money for local culinary scholarships in the name of Nate Allen, a former sauté chef at Oyster Bay who died in a car accident in 2006, at the age of 22. It’s Midnight Out GEORGE Mesterhazy, the Grammy-nominated pianist who became an institution at the Merion Inn on Decatur Street, was admired around the world for his musical genius. In Cape May, he was a legend. Four days after his 59th birthday, in April of 2012, George’s sudden death — he’d experienced a heart attack after a performance in Somers Point — left the community in a state of grief and shock. We interviewed some of George’s countless friends and fans, who took comfort in the knowledge that his music will live on always. This week, we’ve been reminded of this fact. One of George’s students — former Cape May councilman David Kurkowski — has released a CD called It’s Midnight, a proj-

ect done in collaboration with George. “We first met at the First Presbyterian Church in Cape May,” David told us. “I’d been writing music and lyrics for 20 years, I showed one of my songs to George, and he thought there was great potential. We started working together on my compositions, and he suggested we record them all. I was immediately excited.” George helped develop the songs, and provided some of the piano playing and orchestration. The duo also recruited Philadelphia-based singer Paula Johns and world-renowned pianist Barry Miles to perform on the tracks, while David played his oboe. It’s a process, he says, that had a year-long gestation period. “It was such a great experience,” he told us. “George took such delight out of the creative

process, and he took each song to the next level. He was a very close friend of mine, but that’s the thing about George… everyone who knew him considered him a close friend. He was a first-class human being.” The musicians recorded live, after-hours at the Merion Inn, before moving into a studio in Smithville, where Bob Fowler served as sound engineer. Their last session as a complete group was April 2, 10 days before George’s death, making his work on It’s Midnight likely his last recording. David told us he never considered not finishing the project, which took longer than anticipated to complete, as he now had to learn how to do the orchestration work George had been contributing. “It was impor-

David shared with us some of the text messages George sent him after their final recording together. “I can’t bring myself to delete them,” he said. One read: “I really loved the work we did last night. What a beautiful song!!! Great and joy-filled chemistry in the room. Thanks for trusting us with your baby.” And another sums up the encouraging, gracious attitude for which George was so loved: “Take your time and savor each composition,” he said. “I’m spending more time on that also. Even if eight bars come out pretty, I’m happy. I’m trying to do a little every day.” Each track on It’s Midnight has been inspired by an important moment in David’s life, including one written in the ’90s for his wife on their anniversary. “I had to leave for a business trip,” he said, “so I recorded myself singing and playing piano and left it on her

pillow at 5:30 in the morning. Of course, I’m a pretty bad singer, so I’m sure that cassette has been destroyed.” Another, a gospel piece, was written for a friend experiencing a personal crisis. A third was written for a friend’s second wedding, and sung by her 14-year-old daughter, leaving not a dry eye in the place. Many have never been performed at all. But perhaps the most poignant number is the album’s final song, “On the Road of Life,” the meaning behind which is that every person’s life becomes a song in its own right. The closing line — “We’re better for having heard his song” — is the group’s tribute to George. “He lived such a rich life,” David said. It’s Midnight is now available at Whale’s Tale on the Washington Street Mall. Laugh It Up

WE’RE getting psyched for the Eighth Annual PAL — or Police Athletic League — Comedy Night Social on March 15. It’s an event that used to take place at the old Convention Hall, until the building was deemed structurally unsound in 2008. Then it moved to West Cape May Banquet Hall, which was a nice venue, according to PAL President and Cape May Police Officer, Tony Genaro. “But I’m excited to be back at Convention Hall,” he said. “Before, we were limited to 200 people. Now, it would be great to get up into the 300s again. More people means even more laughter.” Not that laughter is a thing that’s ever in short supply at one of PAL’s comedy nights. Tony goes through Headline Entertainment each year to book three professional comedians, making sure they’re always different than the comedians who’ve performed in Cape May previously. “It keeps

We called Headline owner Johnny Lampert, himself a former PAL night comedian, who told us he expects this to be the best show yet. “I make sure every act is strong,” he said. “These are real comedians, not just open mic guys. They’re coming out of Philly, New York and Boston.” Take Joe Vega, for example. He’s been around for 35 years, and he regularly opens for Chris Rock and Mark Anthony. “A real pro,” Johnny said. Then there’s Mick Thomas, a comic from Ireland who brings a fresh perspective. “I tend to stick with what I know,” Johnny said. “But he’s one of the new guys who caught my attention.” Finally, you’ll be treated to Keith Anthony, from whom you’ll get “no generic nonsense.” Each one is going to make it difficult for the next one up, Johnny said. “I stand by this show 100 percent,” he told us.

“The reason the PAL nights are so successful, is because people know they’re going to get their money’s worth.” As for content? “I prefer that my comedians can work clean,” Johnny said. “Not to say they always have to; everyone likes a dirty joke from time to time. But it can’t be based on that. I need to know they have the chops.” But PAL comedy night is not all about the jokes. There will be light fare – including soda, beer, and wine— provided by Lucky Bones, DJ-ing by Tony (that’s his other, other side gig), and plenty of good energy. “The doors open at 7pm, but the comedians don’t come on until 8:30,” Tony said.

“So there’s time to grab a bite and hang out.” Then there’s the raffle. “I’ve asked each basketball team to sponsor a raffle prize with a value of at least $200,” Tony said, “meaning there will be close to $2,000 worth of prizes. One team is doing a barbeque grill, for instance. I’ve been the DJ for a great deal of beef and beers where I’m calling raffle winners all night long, and no one’s paying attention, because the prizes just aren’t that great. This won’t be like that.” But the best part is that this all benefits a good cause. PAL works to improve police-youthcommunity relations. In Cape May, the organization oversees nine traveling basketball teams comprised of approximately 90 kids from third to eighth grade. “Our main goal is to keep kids active, out of trouble, and doing constructive things with their time, all while having positive interactions with police officers,” said Tony, who is himself the parent of two participants. “I’m very proud. It’s such a great feeling

Water-Logged IN JANUARY, we posted a picture on Facebook of the frozen water at Higbee’s Beach, and it generated quite a bit of commentary about how cold it’s been here recently. One comment in particular, from a gentleman named Pete Hart, caught our attention. “I just did a dive job in the harbor,” it read. “Air temp = 25 degrees. Water temp = 35 degrees.” We contacted him to find out why anyone in their right mind — save for the usual, surfing suspects — would leave the comfort of central heating for a frigid dip this time of year.

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 Turns out, Pete is the owner of Twin Beach Divers, a local dive and salvage company that’s been around since 1984. But the story of Pete’s life on — and under — the water begins long before that. Pete was born in Cape May, and for the most part, bred here, save for a few stints. (There was that time he spent, at the age of six, packing fish on the dock where his father worked in North Carolina.) “But I grew up on Lund’s dock in Cape May,” Pete said. “My dad worked there for a long time. Then he went over to Two Mile and was in charge of the whole dock there.” (That’s before the Crab House was built, Pete explained.) At the age of eight, he went out on his first clamming expedition, on an 85-foot boat. “The crew needed a deckhand,” he told us, “and my mother let me go. I brought my peanut butter

and jelly sandwich and climbed aboard at o’dark thirty in the morning. The other deckhand got sick, so the captain had me steer the boat all day, while he shoveled clams into burlap bags. When we docked, the captain told my mother I could come along any time I wanted. She wouldn’t believe I’d driven.” Pete has equally vivid memories of unloading fish at the age of 11. “It took all day to do one boat,” he told us. “And it’s not like we were messing around. That’s just how much fish they’d catch in those days.” But when it came time for college, Pete took off for Georgia Tech in Atlanta to study something nice and easy: aerospace engineering. “I wanted to research nuclear propulsions for space vehicles,” he told us. “But the biggest thing going on in aerospace at the time was trying to make airplane engines more efficient so they burnt less fuel. Whoopee.” Pete did finish school… actually, he earned his

Masters degree in aerospace engineering, but not without taking a few hiatuses in order to come back to Cape May to serve as first mate and engineer on clam boats here — including a 123-footer, the largest in the harbor at the time — and in Ocean City, Maryland. Pete did these jobs until he opened Twin Dive and Salvage, which he did “right down the street on Park Boulevard with 20 bucks in a checking account.” Since then, Pete’s answered calls from commercial and private boaters when things like lobster

traps get caught in propellers. “Yes, sometimes with lobsters in them,” he told us. He’s done a great deal of work with dredging companies who lose their pipes and need help tracking them down in local waters. And he’s answered calls when boats run aground, or when they need to be sunk, sometimes with explosives, on nearby reefs. “Within 10 miles of Cape May there are lots of boats under the water,” he told us. “Lots of stuff, actually, including the slabs from the Walt Whitman bridge.” Then there’s the times he’s brought in to deal with objects that people should not have attempted to sink, like tractor trailers. “I won’t say who did that,” he told us, “but they did it. They put cables around the tractor trailer to keep it from floating away, thinking it would eventually go under, but because it was refrigerated, the insulation kept it afloat. It was my job to cut the

Magnify that times a tractor trailer.” We asked Pete about his greatest wildlife encounter, and he assured us that the sharks everyone wants to know about are just as scared of us as we are of them, though he did have one encounter. “I saw it’s great big teeth, and I thought, Wow, this is a moment right here,” he said. “This is out of the ordinary. But I noticed he seemed pretty tame… he wasn’t moving much. I thought he was dead, so I poked him. Turns out, it was plastic… just a child’s toy. I still have that thing somewhere.” But laughable instances like this are outnumbered by bona fide close calls in Pete’s line of work. “Nobody wants my job,” he told us. “I cannot describe to you how dangerous some of

this stuff is.” Which isn’t hard to believe when you hear about the time Pete closed his company for a period after a colleague jumped off a boat to rescue a friend who couldn’t swim and ended up drowning himself. Then there’s the cold. “We’ve had to start the propellers of boats in order to break up the layer of ice on the water before I jump in,” Pete said, “and sometimes it closes back up while I’m under." But despite it all, Pete’s happy with his choice of career... and he’s about as comfortable underwater as anyone we've ever met. “Sometimes I have to remind myself that I’m below the surface,” he told us. “That’s how long I’ve been doing this. I don’t have any fears. The job has to get done, and that’s what I have to focus on.” To all the men and women doing what Pete does — or working outside at all in these temperatures — we salute you.

1/16: Rose Coyle Celebrates Her 103rd Birthday At Genesis Healthcare

Rose Coyle was born in Sweden on January 10,1910. Her family came to America when she was just two years old. As a young woman, Rose worked in a Philadelphia factory. When WWII began, her new job was to make bullets. (You might say a real Rosie the Riveter! ) She is a WWII honoree — Civilian on the Home Front. In her senior years she was a volunteer with the American Legion. Rose will often tell her niece Jane from Florida that she has no aches or pains and attributes it all to her Swedish blood. She remains active and enjoys being with people. Rose celebrated her 103rd birthday with her family and North Cape friends. Marisa Felsher of Philadelphia lived in Kenya and did service work with the Massai Tribe for three weeks, part of an NGO called Massai Rising, helping to improve the lives of young girls and doing research. “We fund projects for the community, like building pit latrines and buying desks and chairs for an elementary school,” she told us. Marisa is a frequent visitor to Cape May as her parents, Jonathan Felsher and Lisa deProphetis, own a vacation home on Beach Drive in North Cape May.

The Movie Column

This week, Tom Sims, Cape May Film Society Executive Director, reviews “Django Unchained”

HAT can I say about Quentin Tarantino films? To say they’re a “guilty pleasure” would be a misnomer. A common criticism: his films are too gory and lack poignancy. Pulp Fiction (1994) has been heralded as his greatest achievement… and I just thought it was good. Okay, maybe “very good”. Still, Pulp Fiction found me weighing whether the director’s use of violence and gore was worth his plot and dialogue upswings. There is nothing that compares to the scene where Captain Koon (played by Christopher Walken) talks with a young Butch Coolidge (adult character played by Bruce Willis). Despite these few brief glimpses of Tarantino’s creativity and style, I cannot say I became a convert. Kill Bill 1 and 2 (2003 and 2004, respectively) again showed a style and intelligence that could not be denied — as well as the violence that has become the director’s hallmark. So again I was not converted. I thought I’d been converted with Inglourious

Christoph Waltz as Dr. King Schultz and Jamie Foxx as Django in Django Unchained Basterds (2009) where there was somewhat less gore and I got to enjoy the director’s style as well as character development and dialogue. It was also my first glimpse of Christoph Waltz, who got an Oscar for his performance — that alone was worth the price of admission. Django Unchained is Tarantino’s latest film, and I am again impressed by his style. However, I thank him for allowing me to

see Waltz in action (another Oscar nod for his performance in this film). But the director’s style in this film seemed to teeter on the edge of formulaic. I’d seen this all before somehow… and Tarantino turned the heat back up on blood and violence — way up! Some of the scenes are so violent they are unspeakable. Subtlety wins the day when it comes to fine storytelling and great directing. Even the biggest fan of Tarantino can agree that subtlety is not his strong suit. All things said, I didn’t hate Django Unchained. Certainly, Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz were great. The story was interesting although some parts of the plot did not ring true. Is it Oscar worthy? The Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s weekly column... it’s about nothing and everything, all at the same time

AM in the very strange position of being all amped up about the Beatles show that will have taken place by the time you read this, but is still two days away at the time of this writing. And I can’t NOT write about it, so… here we are. And while I have nothing specific for you at the moment (look for annoyingly copious coverage next week) I do want to preemptively thank everyone who participated in both nights, making them so very special for me and the guys. But mostly me. Because I’m a sentimental sap. (I promise not to cry through “Two Of Us” this time… but only because we’re not playing it.) It’s always special to play with my brother Mike because, let’s face it, he’s not getting any younger and I’m never sure which of these gigs will be our last. (I kid! I’m going to die way before him…) And it’s been great working with Will Knapp (Ding!), Terry Dougherty and Al Olivero. This is, oddly, not the first time I booked a gig without having a band, and you never know what’s going to happen when you throw a bunch of musicians together in a

room and say “okay, now learn 50 songs”, but the boys have been consummate pros. And even if we never play another gig together, we will forever be A Band. But we will be playing another gig together — March 30, at the Anglesea Pub, the Love Me Dudes transform into the Glass Houses for Billy Joel Night. And while we are sad to be losing Terry Dougherty, who proved a stalwart through dozens of Beatles songs (and, to be perfectly pragmatic, had a garage we could rehearse in), we’re excited to gig with Walter Sapisi, Jr. (Sah-pee-zee or Sap-is-eye? Discuss.) who is a brilliant bassist in his own right. I know one guy who is jazzed for Billy

Joel Night (which I, unfortunately, referred to as BJ Night on the Facebook… imagine the crowd we’d get for that!) and that would be our drummer, the incomparable Al Olivero, who did an amazing job channeling Ringo for two shows, but… Ringo is Ringo; steady as they come, exciting as a book of wet matches. But Liberty DeVito, Billy Joel’s longtime drummer, is an absolute mad man who really likes to hit ‘em. Al, as a fellow mad man, is champing at the bit. And Al, despite his strange beard thingy, is a pretty together guy; steady job, nice wife, cool daughter. These traits are only shocking because I’m talking about a drummer. I also feel compelled to make comment on the very deep well of talented musicians here on the Cape, many of whom, as I enter into Middle Age and keep alienating bandmates, I’ve had the pleasure to work with. I could fill an entire column just listing their names, but suffice to say, when I moved to Cape May almost 20 years ago, it was with the idea of working with some talented actors in the theater world, not dozens of

top-notch musicians in my unexpected side career. If only there was money in it… And a pre-yet-post (deadlines make things weird; sorry) Beatles Night welcome to Holly Knapp (Dong!), the newest member of the Love Me Dudes. Even though she is clearly not a dude (she’s had a baby) I’m sure she will prove (have proven?) to be a welcome addition to the band. For one, she can take all the high notes. For another, she makes us 13% more attractive. (It’d be more, but we’re pretty handsome already.) She will be taking the place of my wife (much to her husband’s chagrin) who is choosing to pull a Seinfeld and leave ‘em wanting more. I know I always do. At the stern suggestion of the gang from Atlantic Care Surgery Center in Court House, where they took very good care of my wife during a minor procedure last week, I will now write with effusive praise about my wife and kids. (Have I told you how pretty my wife is?) Took them to Convention Hall (what was wrong with calling it Mariner’s Hall, again? Aside from that big meanie Ben Miller suggesting it?) last Sunday for roller skating, and (un)surprisingly, it was rife with misinformation, confused parents, bruised children and not enough hot dogs. Granted, there’s not a whole lot they could do about the bruised children what with them being in shoes with wheels on them (are they insured for that? I kid, I kid… mostly), but it seems that information about times (is it 1-3, 12-5?) and protocols (red ribbons leave when? Birthday parties get how many skates?) could have been more easily disseminated by a few knowledgeable employees, or maybe a sign. I’ve had an easier time getting information from the Kremlin. But… these are relatively minor quibbles (it’s not like we’re talking about UN negotiations) and the boys had a great time, which is all I really care about. Aside from the hot dogs.

I should also take some time to wish a happy birthday to my middle son, Jackson Scott O’Brien, who turned 10(!) on Wednesday and is an ever-evolving, ever-interesting human being and just about the polar opposite of his morose, grumpy dad. I love you, boy; don’t ever change. Also, a happy birthday to my wife, Cathrine, who turns… not 10 today. I’ve been here 20 years. But only 18 of them count. The ones I’ve known her. Proud Exit Zero Parents of the Week: Myself (Owen) and Jason Black (Dakota). Our boys took fourth and second place, respectively, in the recent Maud Abrams Spelling Bee. Owen bowed out on “environment”, but Dakota took it down to a tense, controversial spell-off before finally succumbing to “disestablishmentarianism.” (Not really, but Jason couldn’t remember.) Of course Owen, with his extensive karaoke training, was loudest. Well done by all the kids. Mark Chamberlain stormed into the EZ office on Wednesday to lambast me for not responding to his dig at me two weeks ago in his new health column. (A) He thinks he’s important enough to me that I just have to rush out and read his column? And (B) do I look like a guy that reads a health column? Plus, Chamberlain is kind of a jerk. Oh, you know I kid! Mark and I are friends and his dig was pretty funny. I wouldn’t give if I couldn’t take. But, as guy friends, we must continually bust each other’s chops. I eagerly await his one-up in next week’s “Here’s To Your Health.” That’s all for this week. As ever, you can pop out to say hello every Friday at either Westy’s in North Wildwood for the open mic acoustic show I run with Bill Caterini (who is recently returned from his trip to the Grammy’s where, despite what you might have read, he beat-up neither Chris Brown nor Frank Ocean) from 5-8 (weather permitting), or at the Rio Station for Terry O’ke, 9-12. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

AM unsure if I love or loathe Cape May’s new dog-tagging scheme. I mean, on the one hand, having every hound in the city boundaries chipped, and automatic chip scanning devices fitted to every lamp-post, is surely a good thing to reduce the menace of packs of feral dogs such as the one that dragged a poor mailman off his bike last month and consumed him right down to his boots. But on the other, having taxpayerfunded wardens riding around on little motorcycles with dart guns, ready to fire an implant/tranquilizer tag into any unregistered animal on sight, might be a little step towards the kind of government that caused me to spend four years in Europe with a tin helmet and a Thompson submachinegun with The Big Red One. Actually, I don’t have Young Albert tagged, as he is, due to a little known or used local law, actually a citizen of Cape May. You see, any animal that has served in this fine nation’s armed services is by law exempt from such indignities as chipping

or tagging, and can apply for a passport and the right to vote in local elections: not national ones, of course: that would be silly. Well, after the part Albert played in the liberation of Iraq, the least we could do for him was citizenship and a medal. After all, that brave little hound walks around with half a pound of shrapnel lodged in his head. On the plus side, though, the wardens will all be local chaps, thus helping the economy: we will be needing a dozen agile young men and women who like wearing

a uniform and can look a pack of charging Pekinese in the eye and not blanche. Furthermore, they will need to be sharp shooters: imagine a scene with hundreds of panicking Shoebies and somewhere amid them a rabid pug running around. You will have maybe a 10th of a second to aim and fire your dart gun. Woe betide if you missaim and tag/tranquilize an ample Philly buttock by mistake. We do not want to be the city that is known for the electronic tagging of out-of-towners, as if we actually think it is right to be able to monitor them at all times, and at sundown, escort them back to their buses and see them from the city limits. No, that would be just plain wrong, and I will not entertain those who say that it would be an easy way to raise revenue, much like beach passes but for the whole town. Why, that would mark us as a prissy, superior-feeling place that secretly thinks it better than its neighbors, sort of a cut above, and certainly smarter and cooler And that is not us, is it? Is it?

Members of Cub Scout Pack 73 each receive a piece of wood at the pack’s annual holiday party, with instructions about how to fashion their own derby car. “Believe it or not,” said Cubmaster Tony Genaro, “there’s quite a few rules about size and weight and that sort of thing.” The boys then cut, sand, and paint their cars (with the help of a guardian) before racing them at Cape May Elementary around a 40-foot track. “Each racer gets announced as they make their entrance with lights and fog, so they get to feel like a rock star that day,” Tony said. 1/28: Connor Weatherby Donates To County Animal Shelter

Animal lover Connor Weatherby was flipping through an issue of National Geographic with his mother, Megan Weatherby, recently, and he was particularly taken with the lions pictured there. He decided he wanted to contribute something to the safety and preservation of animals, and his mom suggested donating to the Cape May County Animal Shelter. “He just loves animals,” Megan told us. “Instead of presents, he asked guests of his fifth birthday party to offer donations. Here’s To Your Health

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

UNDAY mornings are sacred in my house, but not for any particular religious reason, (sorry mom). It’s my only day off. After sleeping late I make strong coffee and partake in the fading ritual of reading the Sunday paper. At the same time, I turn on the national news shows and an avalanche of medical commercials begins. The Medical Marketing Machine wants your attention, is spending a lot to get it and using more sophisticated methods to ensure that you “Ask your doctor if (insert product) is right for you.” The aim is to convince you that even if you aren’t sick now, you will be someday. Or is it to plant a seed of doubt about your health? Feeling tired? Rundown? (hung over is more like it). It’s sickness paranoia and sickness by association. Had your prostate checked lately? Colon scoped? Head examined? Your neighbors and friends have, and now they are sailing boats in the Caribbean and golfing (that’s generally the backdrop to the voiceover that rattles off all of the dire side-effects

of using their drug). Now that marijuana is being prescribed they’ll have to list its side-effects, too: “May cause an intense desire to eat chips and giggle uncontrollably.” We have, by design, become facile in speaking about medical procedures and treatments. I overhear (eavesdrop on) many conversations (only the interesting ones) in the gym — members talking about some current malady and reciting from memory every minute detail of pharmacology and procedure involved. That then is matched by someone else’s recitation of

their time in the hospital. It’s like a medical throwdown. A sport of who was sicker. How did this happen? It used to be, “Oy, I’m sick.” “What happened?” “You don’t wanna know!” And that was the end of it. People were private. I blame webmd.com. It’s our new addiction. How do you know you have it? If you have a special cabinet (other people’s medicine cabinets are fascinating) full of current and out-of-date drugs, but are not battling a major disease, you may be addicted to the culture of sickness. So what to do? Move your body. Whatever gets your blood circulating, your lungs breathing, your muscles contracting, your joints bending, and your skin perspiring should be foremost on the daily agenda. Whatever level you are at now is perfect. Start there. I’ve witnessed hundreds of people kick the sickness habit and replace it with a fitness habit. It just works. (I know a great gym that can help you.) Having read this article, if you feel inspired to act, first see your doctor to find out if feeling good is right for you.

Call me a purist, but I’m pretty sure that Valentine’s Day is meant to celebrate love, not sex — never mind that I feel like an idiot in lingerie and let’s face it: it’s for THEM, not US. In the future, how do I express my displeasure to this caveman I’m married to without sounding like an ingrate? – Fully Dressed, Thanks Dear Dressed Good grief, dear lady, the Answer Lady hardly knows where to begin here. (She will start by pointing out that if you are fully dressed for sex, you may be missing out on some serious highlights.) In addition, the Answer Lady believes that Valentine’s Day is actually meant to celebrate the greeting

card, flower, candy, AND lingerie industries, but since those are some of her favorites, she is okay with that. The Answer Lady is sorry that you feel like an idiot in lingerie, but there are many different types of lingerie, and it may simply be a case of your husband reading you wrong. Perhaps he is seeing a sheer red baby doll type of woman, when in reality you are a black lace teddy kind of gal. This situation is easily remedied. Tell him you’d like to pay a visit to Lace Silhouettes — together. The Answer Lady cannot

imagine a gentleman on earth who would have a problem with accompanying his ladylove to a lingerie store to pick out something they BOTH find sexy. This way, you will feel less idiotic (although really, if the lingerie is working correctly, you should only be wearing it for a matter of minutes, if not seconds), and he will still be a happy camper. While you’re at it, see if you can get him to splurge on some new underwear and bras; their selection is outrageous. And make sure to get a free fitting because chances are, you’re wearing the wrong size. And finally, it is about love, and your husband loves you in lingerie. Embrace it. Dear Answer Lady I’m a bad guy, friends are telling me, because I dumped my girlfriend a week before Valentine’s Day. Am I? — Romeo Dear Romeo Kinda. On the other hand, is there really an ideal time to “dump” someone? Did you do it intentionally in an effort to avoid a flower expenditure, or was it a coincidence? Looking From Lower

Local heroes, happenings and a few heckles... a new monthly column by Norris Clark

FTER the high honor of being elected Deputy Mayor of Lower Township, I asked the Exit Zero publisher, a resident of Lower Township, whether he would accept a column about the area each month. Here goes... The way we see it (looking from Lower), we are the real Exit Zero. The Parkway exit itself not only comes our way, but the concept of “Exit Zero” includes much of what is really Lower Township. Take the Cape May Lighthouse. When looking from Lower, one sees Sunset Beach, Diamond Beach, the World War II Lookout Tower, the Lobster House, Lucky Bones, and Cape May Winery to Cape May Brewery. As we tick off these lines for the love of Lower, we’ll look away from that which divides us; we are all Exit Zero. By the way, ever wonder why Cape May County was divided into Upper, Middle and Lower? They were originally religious divisions; Upper was for Quakers, Middle for Methodists, and Lower for Presbyterians.

Local Heroes: Each month we’ll highlight local heroes like David Pacevich. He’s a biology teacher at Lower Cape May Regional High School. David wanted to do more for his students than explain human anatomy. He recently set up proper dancing lessons for the students after school, and he’s working with the school administration to invite local business leaders to provide career preparation talks to the junior class, and helping to expand the internship program for the seniors. David is also setting up a recognition program to honor those from the com-

munity who help the school, and those from the school who help the community. Happenings: We’ll also highlight significant Lower happenings. Activity Of The Week

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Plan your garden.

OLSTOY said that spring is the time of plans and projects, but gardeners don’t wait for spring. They’re planning now. Dedicated gardeners look at their frozen yards and see potential. They leaf through seed catalogues and gardening books. They browse through supply stores and swap seeds with friends. They ponder last year’s disappointments and sketch this year’s hopes. They start seeds indoors. Some gardeners create an endless spring with a Victorian-era invention — the Wardian Case. Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward invented his case in 1829, when he accidentally discovered that ferns grow in glass enclosures. His invention allowed botanists to ship plants around the world and amateurs to grow plants indoors. Soon, every proper Victorian had a terrarium full of exotic plants. You can spend a couple of hundred dollars to buy an authentic Wardian case, or channel your inner thirdgrader and make your own from a jar. Layer pebbles, spaghnum moss and potting soil in the jar, add a small plant or two, and water. Close the jar and place it in a sunny spot, add-

For expert help with your garden plans, register for a series of garden workshops presented by the Nature Center of Cape May. Backyard habitat educator Pat Sutton presents “Gardening for Wildlife” on weekends in March. The workshops are 10am to 3pm and include site visits and question-and-answer sessions. They focus on the specifics of gardening in and around Cape May, using native

plants and wildlife-friendly practices that will help you to create a truly “green” backyard. The workshops build on each other, but they can stand alone. On March 2, the series begins with “How to Create a Backyard Habitat for Wildlife,” followed by “How to Create a Pollinator Garden” on March 3. On March 9, it’s “How to Create a Wildflower Meadow and Wildlife Pond,” followed by “Battlestar Backyardia — Battling the Alien Invaders” on March 16. The series wraps up on Saturday, March 23 with “Landscape Design with Wildlife in Mind.” Most workshops are held at the Cape May Bird Observatory, and the March 23 workshop will be held at the Nature Center of Cape May. Registration is required and the workshops are limited to 30 participants.The cost, including handouts, is $35 for NJ Audubon members, $45 for nonmembers. They were adopted a month later, brought back after two weeks, adopted 10 days after that, and brought back two-anda-half years later... not their fault; just a string of bad luck! The adoption fee together — please, oh please keep them together — is $95.

OLLIE is a mixed breed with blue greycoloring. Although he is only two years old, he is relatively quiet and calm. He enjoys walking, but is not enthusiastic about games of fetch. Ollie is a graduate of the shelter’s “Teacher’s Pet” obedience training program. The training reinforced his good manners --–Ollie obeys commands to “sit, watch, and wait.” He would make a great companion for a single person. Ollie’s adoption fee is $95.

For millions of people, this technological trilobite is bound to their earliest memories. Of sitting on daddy’s knee and turning pages. Of lying in bed, under the blanket with a flashlight and being ferried to distant lands on a bridge built with words. Of looking at pictures of birds from all around the world and dreaming “some day, I’ll see a Tawny Frogmouth myself.” Most people love books. Some people hate them.
