Talk Of The Town

RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS

Dave Tryon and his wife Vickie. Dave passed away last week at the age of 59. Rest in peace, big fella.

The Cape May harbor is one of many things Coastie wife Morgan will miss.

WHENEVER you bumped into Dave Tryon it was like being greeted by the human version of a puppy. No matter how much, or how little, time had passed since you last saw him, the warmth of the greeting was pretty much the same. Which is to say – Dave, with that big, booming voice and his wickedly twinkling eyes, always made you feel like he was really, really happy to see you. And the feeling was mutual. How could you not like a man like Dave? Which is why his sudden passing last Friday, shortly after his 59th birthday, is a hard one to take for Cape May. We feel deeply for his widow Vickie, who found love with Dave the second time around (they had dated in their younger days), his daughters, Lauren and Jennifer, who doted on the big guy, and for everyone who loved him (and there are many). Dave and Vickie were passionate supporters of many Cape May causes. Their photographs graced countless issues of Exit Zero, whether they were captured at one of the many non-profit benefits they attended, or at Halloween parties, where Dave would always take on the role of gaily-dressed chaperone to Vickie’s troupe of lovely ladies (it was a tough gig, Dave, right?). Cape May feels like a sadder, quieter place without big Dave. We’ll miss him. As for Vickie, if she didn’t know it already, she is about to realize just how many good people there are in this community. ¯ LAST week, we wrote about how important it is for locals to see Cape May through the eyes of an outsider from time to time, lest we begin taking this picturesque piece of the planet for granted. This week, we have an example of the opposite — an out-oftowner who was able to live like a local for a short time, and see what it’s like to call Governor Chris Cape Island home. Christie was scheduled to Her name is Morgan, she’s an Ohio native who’s married visit Cape May to her high school sweetheart, and she’s a self-described on Wednesday. “Coast Guard wife, mama, sometimes runner, wannabe chef, and Midwestern girl, currently living in New York City.” We know this, because we stumbled upon a blog Morgan wrote last month, a little while after moving out of Cape May with her military family, who’d come here via Texas. “Something I’ve struggled with for the past year,” Morgan writes “is

Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Angela Feerrar of Philadelphia. How long have you been coming to Cape May? I discovered this place for the first time this year, just looking for a spot to day trip to with my girlfriends. What do you like about it? The beach, and the sexy lifeguards... can I say that? What’s your favorite place? The Cove at sunset. Least favorite thing about Cape May? People biking in places that really aren’t bike-friendly, like West Perry Street. It makes driving an obstacle course. What is your favorite restaurant? The Red Store — that porch in the evening is a magical place, and the food is always inventive. And your favorite store? West End Garage is fun to explore. What do you like about Exit Zero? It’s informative and entertaining and well-written. Also, you can tell it’s put together by a staff who genuinely love this place. What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? The Answer Lady. It’s just not my cup of tea. What’s your T-shirt size? I’m a Small. Want to join our army of subscribers — there are hundreds of them in nearly 30 states! Call us on 609-770-8479 or buy one online at ezstore.us. It’s $50 for all 47 BW issues PLUS our six color issues.

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above. If you think you know this place, you could win a gift certificate for a local business. wondering if I’ll ever again feel the happiness that I felt when we lived in Cape May. I’ve said so many times that that place became my home, because it did. But the thing that scares me is that I never struggled with leaving my actual home (the place I grew up and lived 95% of my life from the time I was born until I was 21) the way I’ve struggled with leaving Cape May.” Morgan goes on to wax nostalgic about the big growing-up moments her three children experienced on Cape Island, the wonderful school system they were a part of, even about the oft-lamented crowds that flock here in the height of the season. “Something like sitting in NYC traffic makes me think of Shoobies,” she says. “It almost feels like it was a different life.” She mentions things — like enjoying a firepit from the comfort of a lawn chair with one’s neighbors, and seeing, really seeing, the Cape May harbor — that most of us put off or forget to do altogether over the course of living daily life. “I know that there is another Cape May out there for me,” Morgan says, “and eventually we’ll find it. But even when we do, I will always think of our years in Cape May as some of the best in my life.” Good luck, Morgan, and thanks for the reminder that we should all Continued On Page 16 ?

be stopping to smell the salt air. Check out her blog, This Organic Life, at thisorganicfamily. wordpress.com/about/. ¯ On Monday, we received notice that the city was being visited by Governor Chris Christie on Wednesday (too late for us to actually record the event). The visit was one of many stops the governor is making throughout the state to see how the shore is recovering from Hurricane Sandy. Thankfully, of course, there isn’t too much for us to report, given how lucky Cape May was last October. We hope he enjoyed his stroll through the mall and that he makes use of the Exit Zero cap we planned on giving him. Hey, maybe we’ll see it in the Oval Office one day... ¯ HERE is an important note to remember for all of you athletes — and just those of you into starting a new tradition. New Jersey’s Newest and Only Marathon Swim will take 23 Swimmers around Cape Island (15.1 miles) in the Cape Circumnavigation Challenge. Swimmers from as far as Hawaii and the UK will convene on our shores to start the 15-mile(!) journey. On September 13, Swimmers will meet on the Spirit of Cape May and get a look at the route they will swim and also be briefed from a safety perspective. The following day, swimmers will start from Higbee Beach in West Cape May and swim in a clockwise fashion around the island entering the Cape May Canal, moving through the Cape May Harbor, out the Cold Spring Inlet, and pass the strand/beaches as they swim through the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay back to the start. Local volunteers including the Coast Guard and Cape May Beach Patrol will be on hand to assist and ensure the safety of all involved. Every swimmer will have a kayak escort that will be her primary means of nutrition (you have to fuel up!), navigation, and safety. Under marathon swimming rules, swimmers must swim non-stop from start to finish (not touching land, boats, etc.) The event will benefit MERR (Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation). The Movie Column

T

Tom Sims on the great work done at Cape May Film Camp

HEY’RE here! The three video features from the 2013 Cape May Film Camp are available online. The camp is held each year at the end of June at West Cape May Borough Hall. For five days, campers in middle and high school conceptualize a story then work to make that story come to life on the big screen (and now on the Cape May Film Society’s YouTube channel—www.youtube. com/capemayfilm). Here are the films: Me, Myself and I is a short film about a bookworm who can’t seem to make her friends happy (she’s studying too much when the weather is gorgeous and her friends want to play!). She makes a careless wish to a magic fish bowl that “everyone was exactly like me” She’s transported to a world where she gets her wish. Will she be happy in her new reality? Get Away tells the story of four girls selected for a reality TV show. In the show, the girls are taken to a secret spot (blindfolded) and must find their way back to town by sundown. The one who makes it back to town first wins the prize. Some of the contestants are confused, as one says, “When I heard the show

A scene from a Cape May Film Camp movie Me, Myself and I was called Get Away, I thought they would send us to a nice spa or something. But instead they send us to, like, the Amazon!” The Pit Crew follows the story of a frustrated filmmaker who can’t sell his new project to studios. “Look it’s a movie about zombies robots and aliens all attacking at the same time,” he pleads with executives at the Lifetime channel. “It’s never been done!” When he can’t get a studio to pick up on the project, he vows, “Fine! I’ll make it myself!” He enlists the help of a talented crew of students of a film camp in Cape May to make the movie. Unfortunately,

everything doesn’t always go so smoothly on the set, and he needs to improvise as necessary to see his dream become a reality. Will he make his movie? We will be screening these films at the 2013 Cape May Film Festival, October 25-27 exclusively at the Chalfonte Hotel. View the films now at www.capemayfilm.org. The first person to send their one sentence review of any of these films to capemayfilm@hotmail. com wins a weekend pass to the film festival. Please support local kids as they express themselves in being part of the filmmaking process. The videos are great and the experience for the kids is unforgettable. Finally, we were deeply saddened to hear of the sudden and unexpected passing of David Tryon. David and his wife Vickie have always been wonderful supporters of the Cape May Film Society. Vickie has worked with us on videos such as Duckumentary — and David was such a good sport for not trying to talk her out of taking part of these admittedly somewhat zany projects. We offer our condolences to Vickie, and to their extended family and friends, of which there were many.

The book everyone in Cape May is talking about It was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s, but after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now, finally... this remarkable story can be told, and enjoyed. These beautiful hardcover, illustrated books signed by the late author’s grandson, George Carlisle, are available at the Exit Zero Store & Gallery. Or at our online store: ezstore.us. The Old Fogey

T

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

HIS has, friends, been a successful tourist season. Some statistics: this summer we have had one million and three visitors exactly, not counting the 28 refugees who arrived by leaky rowboat from Philly, seeking a better life and marveling at our electric lighting, public plumbing and paved streets. I say “not counting” as they were of course sent right back home after some useful vaccinations and given an aid package containing a bar of Coal Tar Soap, five pieces of fruit and a box of matches. Yes, we can sometimes rehabilitate ferals from Wildwood, and Ocean City folks are most often useful for domestic service and some light lifting jobs, but Philly? Really, that is beyond the pale! So we had our 1,000,003 visitors, who spend an average of $652, of which $205 went on Uncle Bill’s pancakes, hot dogs and saltwater taffy, $300 went on board and lodgings and $80 was handed over to our eagle-eared (not eyed, no, I make no mistake there) local constabulary for fines ranging from “looking at me the wrong way” to

“driving thru a green light that had followed a red light.” The remainder was taken by pickpockets, flim-flam artists and sellers of snake oil, plus or minus five percent that fell from their pockets when inebriated/overfed. The average weight of visitor was 267lbs, slightly up on last year due to the arrival of a score of coaches from Atlantic City Husky Kids Sporting Association. This did, though, reduce the average weight of other visitors that month by three pounds, due to chronic shortages of carbohydrates and processed snacks.

Quality handcrafted, US made Bird Houses, Feeders, Baths, Butterfly and Bat houses. Iron Poles Chimes Garden Art & Decor

Natural Insect Repellents (no Deet!) Scented Wax Pottery Hummingbird Feeders

The number of dog bites was up slightly to 3,569, 96 per cent of which were from Young Albert one day when a rough-handed Shoebie stroked his fur from back to front rather than front to back and it drove him into a berserker rage. Note, only 98 of these bites were on the offending Shoebie (who made a good recovery and will not need to waste money on full-fingered gloves this winter): the rest were plotted in a straight line across the beach, until Young Albert plunged into the ocean. The average Cape May citizen complained about weather/visitors/falling standards of public decency on average 49 times per day, and used the phrase “not like it was in the old days” 23 times while complaining. Beachcombers’ haul this year was an accumulated total of $79,934 in coins and notes, 490 wedding bands, 290 watches, 205 costume jewelry tiaras and the crown of the throne of Denmark. The most common phrase uttered by visitors was, “Excuse me, can you tell me where …?” and the most common reply by locals was: “No!”

Here’s To Your Health

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

O

NE of our gym members, Dr. Keith, excitedly told me about a book he had read about running and was kind enough to lend it to me. It’s called Finding Ultra and the subject and author is Rich Roll, who continues to defy all the odds that are stacked up against him. Now in his mid-forties, Rich grew up in the DC metro area and for various reasons never quite fit in. He was labeled a dork and an outsider in the private schools his parents struggled to pay for him to go (bullying became a daily event). He found that he could escape his tormentors while swimming and that he was pretty good at it. He was able to get training with some excellent coaches and that training included getting up at four o’clock each morning for a two-hour practice followed by an after-school practice of the same time, or longer. He studied just as intently and was accepted to every school he applied to, from Harvard to Stanford. He chose Stanford because of their coach and their championship-caliber swim team. Of all of the things that could have

stopped his rise to the world stage of competitive swimming, one never seemed possible — alcohol abuse. But this shy, nerdy kid found that he could come out of his shell and be sociable after a few drinks. But a few became a lot; every day. Anyone who knows an addict or is in recovery themselves can tell you the predictable trajectory of this tale. The book goes into excruciating detail, though, of his decline. Fast forward to a 39-year-old lawyer, over-weight, over-worked and stressed out. Climbing the stairs to go to bed he feels as if he is having a heart attack. Fear of death has a way of bringing your life into focus. He took

the flying fish studio 130 park blvd west cape may

it as a wakeup call. He wanted to be alive to see his kids grow up. Like a man with a death sentence he attacked his training just the way he did when swimming more than 20 years earlier. His diet was the first thing he changed and he threw out all of his junk food, eventually becoming a vegan and using juicing to fortify his health. (Try telling an athlete that he should or could be a vegan and they would laugh at you.) And after one unsuccessful attempt at a half-marathon he then decided to take on an Ultraman. An Ironman is an ocean swim of 2.4 miles, a bike ride of 112 miles and a run of 26.2 miles. An Ultra is double that over three days! At 42, he was listed as one of the 25 fittest people on earth and, later, along with a friend who had limited use of one arm, did five ironman distance events in five days. Okay, by this point you are either inspired or think I’m reading fiction. So? The point? Humans ( and that includes most of you) are capable of doing amazing things. And that inspires me. I hope it inspires you, too.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady, I have a new neighbor, and she is delightful. We’ve become quite friendly and have gone out to lunch a couple of times. She has one weird quirk, though; she is obsessed with the cost of everything. When we first met, I told her I was divorced and she immediately asked how much alimony I get. I thought it was a one-time thing, but it has continued. She will remark that she likes my earrings, for instance, and I’ll thank her, and then she’ll say “How much were they?” I don’t quite know what to say, and I usually just mumble something or try to change the subject. Am I weird to think that discussing money is kind of off-limits, or is she? — MYOB Dear MYOB, The Answer Lady does not think your neighbor is weird at all, considering that

she was evidently raised by wolves. Good grief, gentle reader — of course you are correct that most polite people do not sit around discussing how much they paid for every little thing, and let us be civilized or die. You could always counter with some platitude such as “the best things in life are free,” but then again the best things in life are the Caramellows at Fralinger’s, and they are $1.69 each and worth every red cent and then some. But the Answer Lady digresses. There is no need to beat

Bird Droppings

T

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

HE Cape May Point Hawk Watch starts this Sunday, September 1 at the Hawk Watch platform in Cape May Point State Park. Every fall since 1976, New Jersey Audubon’s Cape May Bird Observatory, in cooperation with New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry, conducts a count of tens of thousands of migrating hawks that head south via the Cape May peninsula. Approximately 40,000 birds of prey of 15 species will be tallied between September 1 and November 30. Weather largely determines how many hawks will be counted on any given day. But, it is rare day when no hawks are migrating at this worldfamous hawk watching junction. Veteran counter, Tom Reed will return as the counter this year. He will be joined on the platform by two interpretive naturalists tasked with pointing out hawks and other birds to platform visitors. Visitors are cordially invited and there is no fee. The count is funded by optics giant Swarovski Optik who have also provided a number of very

fine Swarovski binoculars for use by platform visitors. Those won over by the superlative quality of Swarovski instruments can then go to the Cape May Bird Observatory to purchase one of their own. What are your chances of seeing a Bald Eagle? Pretty good. The birds nest on Cape Island and September is one of the peak periods for eagle migration. September also sees impressive numbers of American Kestrel and it is not too early for migrating Peregrine

Contemporary & Estate Jewelry

Falcons. Although the end of September is generally better for these Arctic nesters. But there is always something to see. The Hawk Watch platform overlooks Bunker Pond which hosts lots of migrating shorebirds and September is the month many neo-tropical migrants are heading south. Including hundreds of Bobolinks. Orioles and assorted warbler species are also daily fare at the platform in September. Best viewing times are dawn till midmorning and late afternoon to dusk. If you want to keep score, there are free bird check lists at the platform as well as listings of CMBO bird walks and events. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times.

Activity Of The Week

Y

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Boardwalk Nights

OUR visit to Victorian Cape May is not complete without a detour to the Doo Wop Wildwoods. The Boardwalk of your youth is still there, smelling of funnel cake, pizza, and salt water taffy, although the games are no longer a quarter and the T-shirts no longer say “REO Speedwagon.” Try classic games and rides, like the giant Ferris wheel, or some newer attractions, like the Palace of Sweets Adventure Maze. This glass labyrinth takes the funhouse tradition to a whole new level, and empties out in to a candy store that will let you refuel. Jacked up on pixie sticks, you can try the Vault, which lets you play Mission:Impossible as you crouch and crawl under laser beams. Scare yourself silly at the Ghost Ship, or let your kids scare you when they take the wheel of the go-carts. Pose for old-time photos or take a selfie in front of your favorite ice cream shop. Explore [artBOX] — a collection of used shipping containers on Adventure Pier. They’ve been reclaimed and turned into

For a date night or family outing, the Ferris wheel is a must-do. art studios that fit right in with Wildwood’s atmosphere. There’s music, speed painting and glass blowing, and an Exit Zero museum shop. The Boardwalk is about two miles long. You still have to “Watch the tram car, please,” or hop on to enjoy the best people watching around. The wide Wildwood beaches stretch out invitingly, and no beach tags are required, so take a break from the crowded boards to toss a frisbee or fly a kite

HELP WANTED - HOUSEKEEPERS Year Round, Full Time (Weekends a Must) Day (6:45am – 2:45pm) or Evening (4pm – 10pm) $9/hr. + tips

if you find it all a little overwhelming. You can space out your boardwalk experience or do it all in one day, like the Armstrong family of Annapolis, Maryland. Armed with a change of clothes and some sweatshirts, they started the day at Raging Waters, switched to Ocean Oasis, then tackled lots of games and rides before finishing up with a round of mini-golf at Duffer’s. My teenage daughter was ready to quit long before 10-year old Elizabeth and eightyear-old Lachlan. Must be the pixie sticks. The Boardwalk can get pricey if you bring a crowd, so look for special pricing and coupons. Many attractions offer discounts for seniors, small children, and parent escorts. Other than the water parks, the Wildwood Boardwalk is best experienced at night, when the lights make everthing more exciting. Pay attention to the age and ability guidelines — Morey’s Piers puts out a map that lists all the attractions, ranks rides by thrill level, includes information for people with disabilities, and summarizes age, height and weight restrictions. COCO is a fun-loving, spunky shepherd who loves to run and play! She needs a little training, because she has a lot of energy, but she loves to snuggle and cuddle too. She’d love to be in an active house where people are ready to play. She’s been bounced from home to home, so she needs a permanent spot where she can finally be comfortable. Stop by the shelter and visit Coco! Her adoption fee is $95.

«

KIA is an older pit bull terrier who would really prefer to live her golden years in a nice home; the shelter life just isn’t for her! She would make a great companion for an active owner — Kia may not be young anymore, but she still loves to play! She gets along great with other dogs, kids, and even cats. If you’re looking for someone special to light up your life, stop by the shelter and visit her. Kia’s adoption fee is only $35.

ZEKE is a three-year-old lab and shepherd mix (which is just about the best mix on the planet, we think) currently residing at the shelter. He’s a fun-loving boy who loves to play, be a a good boy, and be happy... just what you’d want in a new companion. If you think Zeke fits into your life (we’d be shocked if he couldn’t) please come meet him today... it’s not fair for him to be behind bars one minute longer. The adoption fee is $95.

PUMPKIN is a very sweet little girl just over a year old, but she’s still quite small. She is very social, but she will probably want all of your attention for herself... meaning she won’t want to share you with any other cats. If you are looking for a small, sweet girl, look no further; come to the shelter for a visit. Pumpkin’s adoption fee is $35.

«

LEXI is an adorable girl who is looking for someone to show her love again. She has been at the shelter since December, and she’s really starting to miss having a human companion. She likes to be pet, and doesn’t mind being held. If you are looking for a loving friend to share your home with, give Lexi a chance. The adoption fee is $35.
