Talk Of The Town
RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS
The dogs of Cape May, like Exit Zero puppy Rudy, could use a spruced-up dog park in Cape May. Check out beneful.com for information on how to make that a reality... and possibly win some cash.
The Cape May Fire Department will sell T-shirts at the Dragon Boat Festival.
THANKS to Will Riccio for alerting us to a great contest sponsored by dog food company Beneful. The winner will receive a dream (read: worth $500,000) dog park in his or her hometown. All you have to do is post a picture of you and your dog and write a short essay (250 words or less) explaining what your dream dog park would entail… Grooming stations? A ball field? Water slides? Let your imagination run wild. Best idea gets the grand prize. AND $10,000 cash. AND a year’s supply of Beneful. While we love that Cape May does currently have a place where pups can be leash-free on Lafayette Street — the small park was secured by the Cape May Dog Friendly Association in 2008 — it could use a makeover; there’s only so much volunteers can do, after all. And while the competition appears stiff — there were already 644 entries from around the country at the time we went to press — some of them are a little lame. Of course a dog park should have space for dogs to play, Charlie from Indiana. What else you got? We think you can do better, Cape May, so give it a shot. You never know… Log onto beneful.com for details, or for information on the expert judges, including Jason Cameron of Sex and the City fame. ¯ SIXTY-year-old local Frank Perillo — father of four and grandfather of two — was, this past spring, just “two steps from being dead,” he told us this week. As a captain for New York City’s MTA in September of 2001, Frank served as a first responder after the World Trade Center attack. “I was on my way to the office at 2 Broadway when the planes hit,” he said. “I was on the scene for 11 days straight.” As a result of that service, and all of the debris Frank breathed in during that time, his lungs suffered nearly fatal damages that would manifest as pulmonary fibrosis and an inflammatory disease called sarcoidosis. Fortunately, on May 7, Frank received a bilateral lung transplant. “It’s like a miracle,” he said. “I have a whole new life ahead of me.” Although he’s not out of the woods yet — doctors say the first year after surgery is crucial — Frank is feeling “pretty damn good,” medical expenses notwithstanding. To help offset the cost of the procedure that saved his life, and the month-long hospital stay that followed, a group of friends — It may look like and fellow Lucky Bones-goers — have set up a raffle of prizes totaling a demolision $1,230, including a full day of fishing aboard the Over Pour boat, and gift project, but certificates to local restaurants. HomeStead “I have mixed emotions about it,” said Frank, who moved to Cape May, Realty is only his favorite vacation spot, five years ago. “I never thought in my wildest replacing the roof on their dreams there would ever be a raffle with my name on it. But I’m honored. new office, the I’ve been coming down here for 30 years, and these people I’ve come to know… everybody site of the old has really pitched in. I have a lot to live for.” Bank Street To purchase tickets, call JimBob (that’s Jim Schultz and Robert Epaldo) at 609-886Wawa. 7097. Drawing will take place October 20. ¯ REAL men wear pink. Subscriber Of The Week
Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Jayne Malloy of Daytona, Florida. How long have you been coming to Cape May? My husband and I discovered it this month. What do you like about it? The weather here is so beautiful in September... it’s perfect beach weather. It’s still so unbearably hot at home! What’s your favorite place? The dock of the ferry. What a great way to approach Cape May... especially with a cocktail in hand! Least favorite thing about Cape May? I don’t mind paying for parking, but where are the change machines? What is your favorite restaurant? My husband is addicted to breakfast, so he loved Uncle Bill’s Pancake House. He keeps asking me when my waffles are going to taste that good. What do you like about Exit Zero? We called your office at least three times with questions, or becuase we needed directions, and you were always so helpful. What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? Someone forgot to post the mystery photo winner last week. What’s your T-shirt size? Medium. Want to join our army of subscribers — there are hundreds of them in nearly 30 states! Call us on 609-770-8479 or buy one online at ezstore.us. It’s $50 for all 47 BW issues PLUS our six color issues.
Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above. If you think you know this place, you could win a gift certificate for a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
? From Page 13 members of Cape May Fire Department will sport a new uniform, the pink breast cancer awareness raising T-shirts they’ve been selling since September 6. “Firefighters are always looking to make things a little better for the people we serve,” said Lieutenant Michael Eck. “And obviously cancer is a hideous disease that affects nearly everyone, either personally, or because a family member or friend has been diagnosed.” Wanting to make a difference, and inspired by the International Association of Firefighters, which has held similar fundraisers, the Cape May Fire Department reached out to the North Wildwood Fire Department… only to find out they’d already begun organizing their own pink T-shirt sale. So the two brigades then teamed up with the Ocean City and Wildwood departments, and now all four are set to sell shirts at their respective stations through at least October, and at various events in Cape May and Wildwood, including the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival (September 28 on the Cape May harbor). All proceeds will benefit the Wildwood-based nonprofit Survivors of Cancer, which seeks to improve the lives of those affected by cancer. Shirts are $20 a piece. ¯ THEY’RE making progress this week on construction of the new HomeStead Realty Office, which will move from West Cape May to the site of the old Bank Street Wawa. It may look like a demolition is in progress, but HomeStead says they are merely replacing the roof of the old Wawa, and that they hope to be settled by this spring.

The Movie Column
S
Tom Sims reviews “Blue Jasmine”, the latest release from Woody Allen
OMETIMES I wonder how Woody Allen attracts such acting talent when his movies can be pointless and unimpressive; something I also mentioned in my review of Allen’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (2010). The following year, Allen was nominated for an Oscar with his fantasy-comedy, Midnight in Paris, which I thought was great. So the chances of Blue Jasmine being good were 50/50 I suppose. I would say the story is adrift, but then that wouldn’t account for how jarring it is with the cuts from past to present. The premise is okay but not exactly Allen’s best concept. Cate Blanchett stars as Jasmine, a woman who has been both at the top and in the pits with regard to her fortunes and societal standing. Her husband, Hal (played by Alec Baldwin), is a player and con artist who gets busted. Even the reveal in the end (no spoiler alert needed here) isn’t all that much of an “a-ha” moment. More like “eh… who cares?” But this film is not a complete loss.
Cate Blanchett is stellar in the otherwise not-sostellar Woody Allen movie Blue Jasmine. Blanchett is amazing in her portrayal of a societal star whose f lame has most certainly died out. She never once loses sight of her character, and delivers an Oscar-worthy performance, as does Sally Hawkins, who plays Ginger, Jasmine’s sister. Hawkins is best known for her role in the Oscarnominated film An Education (2009). Other critics may rave about the
remainder of the cast, and even though it was good to see Andrew Dice Clay take on a semi-serious role, none of the other performances were that stellar. Maybe that’s because the material just wasn’t that much of a stretch for these actors. It’s like I’ve seen them in these roles before. Although Alec Baldwin was more serious than he normally is, his character was still onedimensional so how much stretching did he need to do? Blue Jasmine is not at all a feelgood film, but I’m not so sure it was even a good film. I left the theater not completely depressed only because of Blanchett’s performance, and I hope she takes her first Best Actress Oscar for it. The first person to email capemayfilm@hotmail.com with the answer to the following question wins a weekend pass to this year’s Cape May Film Festival, October 25-27, Chalfonte Hotel: Blanchett won Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of which Hollywood legend and in what 2004 film? Good luck, and no cheating!

Life is full of choices
Choices for lunch with a friend:
#1 No view (unless you consider the parking
lot a view). The usual menu of burgers, salads, wraps and lots (lots) of fried stuff. Nothing to do when you’re finished except get back to your car before the meter runs out.
#2 Wow! Look at the view! A Victorian
mansion, beautiful lawns and gardens, even an herb garden a few steps from your table. A varied menu...cafe fare to an elegant Tea Luncheon, with unique salads, signature sandwiches and desserts to make you give up dieting. After lunch? Stroll the grounds, visit the museum shop or see the latest exhibit in the gallery. There’s no rush to get anywhere, because the parking is free.
Sometimes #2 is way better!

The book everyone in Cape May is talking about It was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s, but after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now, finally... this remarkable story can be told, and enjoyed. These beautiful hardcover, illustrated books signed by the late author’s grandson, George Carlisle, are available at the Exit Zero Store & Gallery. Or at our online store: ezstore.us. The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
AM bereft. Oh I know, I know; I do tend to complain a little about Shoebies, and perhaps I am a little short-tempered when the streets are clogged with sweating out-of-towners pausing every two seconds to gawp. And I admit I have on the odd occasion resorted to violence when unable to walk the length of my street in under three hours due to milling masses. But really, I miss them, every one, and the other day, when Young Albert and I took our morning constitutional and I had no opportunities to lash out with my silvertopped walking cane, and he failed to bite even one toweling-sock-clad ankle, I was almost moved to tears. Because — and you will think I grow soft — I miss those chubby red cheeks and slack jaws, the familiar sticky slap of cheap plastic flip-flops on searing-hot sidewalks, the smell of gently toasting flesh coated with tanning oil, the gentle background rustle and clink of dollar bills and coins flowing into cash registers.
I find I grew accustomed to being stopped every three paces and asked for directions to somewhere (usually the spot they are standing on), where the subway is (hidden under the sands, sadly), who made the Concrete Ship (the US Navy and aliens, in cahoots) and why we have so many Victorian houses (because Cape May used to be joined to London by pedestrian tunnel until The Titanic clipped it on its maiden voyage and caused a catastrophic leak). I even miss the occasional dull
thump or rhythmic rattle as trespassing Shoebies ignore the “Keep Out on Pain of Dismemberment by Yorkshire Terrier” signs and trigger the landmines — it helps me get to sleep as I chuckle. And the distant noise of patrons of our splendid beach bars as they stagger out, disrobe, howl with delight as they sprint towards the ocean and get halfway before vomiting is an endless comfort. On reflection, I think that I rather enjoy seeing thousands of people declare loudly how splendid, how magnificent, how superior we all are here. I know we tell ourselves that every day, and really, we need no outside confirmation, but adulation warms a place in my dark little heart, no matter the source, and I know I will rather miss those glistening, farting, burping herds. I am off to prepare the Mansion for winter hibernation — all but essential staff will be placed in cryogenic units in the basement, all of the air will be pumped out of the library so its treasures are not harmed and Shoebies caught trespassing will be harvested for their usable organs, as local laws permit.

Book Gift Certificate Giveaway
Page 73
Every week, we ambush an unsuspecting citizen (or citizens) with a gift certificate to Cape Atlantic Book Company Who are you? Anne Woelfel, from Bear Creek, PA. How long are you staying in Cape May? I have a condo in the east side of town, and will probably be here till next week. I’ve had my condo for about three years and I’ve been coming here for 30 years. I had my honeymoon here. Are you celebrating soon? We just renewed our vows here in June. Do you visit during the winter time? I love the ocean in winter! A totally different sight. What do you do for work? I just resigned! I’ve been working for 30 years for the Times Leader newspaper in Wilkes Barre. I was assistant managing editor. I’m talking the summer off to think about what I’ll do next. Here’s To Your Health
A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club
A
COMMON refrain we hear when celebrating a birthday is, “May you have many more!” Just how many more? The science of aging has made tremendous strides in understanding how and why we age, but many questions remain unanswered. All of the gains in the last 100 years in mortality can be attributed to public health and better infant mortality rates, not some grand understanding of aging and how to counteract it. One area of research that holds promise is free radicals. Oxygen is essential to life but it also contributes to the creation of free radicals that cause oxidation in the cells, much like the way metal left outside starts to rust. They do damage to DNA, proteins and lipids, augment aging and have a role in weakening the immune system. Yet free radicals are essential for your health — they destroy unhealthy cells, bacteria and viruses. The problem is when there is a surplus of them it leads to a condition called oxidative stress, thought to be a precursor for many age related diseases. Anti-oxidants have been touted for years
as the way to keep raging free radicals at bay. Vitamins C and E are often recommended as a critical part of supplementing our diet. But what if it isn’t true? Research conducted by some heavy hitters including Dr James Watson, co-discoverer of DNA, in which he concluded that there was no evidence that treating cancer patients with large doses of anti-oxidants was effective, has started people questioning anti-oxidant therapy. If the scientists don’t agree then you have to decide for yourself if you think supplementing with vitamins is worth it. But there is another exciting area of research looking at how enzymes already in the cells
COME CHECK OUT ALL OF OUR NEW DESIGNS!
the flying fish studio 130 park blvd west cape may
responsible for savaging for free radicals can be manipulated to do more. The three most studied are superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione per oxidase. SOD was discovered in the 1960s by Irwin Fridovich and Joe McCord. It is a powerful, self-produced anti-oxidant and has been widely studied as it seems to offer the best hope in turning back some of the properties of aging. As we age we produce less and less. So, if we can increase the levels of SOD and decrease the oxidative stress in the cells we would be less likely to get things like cancer and heart disease. But simply taking an SOD supplement doesn’t work because it is destroyed by stomach acids. Others have claimed to have side-stepped this problem by creating a supplement that turns on the cells’ ability to make more of its own rather than bringing it in whole from outside your body. So maybe we ARE closer to cracking the code of aging. Remember, it wasn’t too long ago that people thought polio and chicken pox were incurable.

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady Now that all the riff-raff and tourist types have cleared out, I can resume enjoying my leisurely bike rides through our fair city. I recently rode with a friend — it’s our preferred method of transportation when bar-hopping — and he told me that I’m riding on the wrong side of the road. I’ve always ridden with the flow of traffic, but he says it’s dangerous and I should ride against to avoid being hit from behind. Which one of us is correct? — Two Wheeler Dear Wheeler You are correct — one should always ride WITH the traffic flow, lest one wishes to end up an extra, albeit more festive and ostentatious, hood ornament on a passing Mercedes. In fact, according to bicyclinginfo.org, as many as one in four accidents involving bicy-
clists are the result of the cyclist riding against traffic and/or on the sidewalk. Perhaps your friend is thinking about walking, in which case he would be correct — pedestrians should walk against traffic flow. And while we’re slightly off-topic, since you opened the door, the Answer Lady will waltz through it: while one should never drive a car after drinking, one should not necessarily be riding one’s bike around town under the influence, either. Sure, it is better than getting behind the wheel

West Cape May ...a small town by the sea
Rich in history, West Cape May can trace its beginnings to farmers 400 years ago. Now it’s home to a business district that’s full of quality — and quirks. There are excellent antiques and art shops; affordable, relaxing eateries; beautifully restored B&Bs, and privately held homes with authentic Victorian architecture. In short, West Cape May is the undiscovered jewel of the island. Wilbraham Park hosts several fun festivals throughout the year (see sidebar). But you don’t have to wait for an event to enjoy it. Grab a take-out lunch and picnic in the park under the cool canopy of trees. Then explore the town on foot because it’s so walkable. Or bike because of the great bike paths and country roads. Or drive and not worry about parking. There’s always free parking in West Cape May. Insider Tip... The restaurants and shops are diverse and fun. Not only will you find treasures in West Cape May that you can’t find in other shore towns — you probably can’t find them at home, either. West Cape May is the Best Cape May. Visit westcapemaytoday.com or follow them on Facebook at West Cape May Business Association.

Activity Of The Week
T
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Cape May County Zoo.
HE Cape May County Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and works with zoos around the world to protect animals and their habitats. Their efforts are seeing success — four new Chinese Alligators, one male and three females, have recently moved in. Snow leopard parents Himani and Vijay have produced seven cubs in four years. With their thick hair, long tails and impressive athleticism, the snow leopards have legions of fans. But less impressive animals also need support. The Eastern Tiger Salamander Headstart Conservation Initiative reminds us that tiny indigenous amphibians need love, too. The zoo is one of Cape May’s treasures, a beautiful park inhabited by more than 500 animals. As you stroll, you’ll hear clucks and tweets galore. If you’re lucky, you’ll also hear the majestic sounds of the lion, who makes a sort of grunting meow as he dozes in the afternoon sun. It’s a noise that reminds you how magnificently wild these animals are.
Snow leopard cubs have been a big draw at Cape May County Zoo, a must-see attraction. Sometimes animals will be absent from their habitats, and Murphy’s law dictates that those are the very ones your kids are eager to see. Jokes about the invisible capybara or giraffe may help, or, if you’re lucky, a nearby animal will be display some bodily function — a urinating otter is a powerful distraction. Wear sneakers and sunscreen, and take your
allergy medicine — the zoo is full of lush plants. Take a stroller if you have one — it’s a long walk back from the savana. No food is allowed in the zoo, but you can bring water, and they sell ice cream. Leave a packed cooler in your car so you can have lunch in the park when you’ve finished your safari. The large playground is great, and the train and carousel are open on weekends. There’s also a gift shop for souvenirs — take a picture with the giant stuffed bear every year to measure your kids’ growth. Admission to the zoo is free, though donations are encouraged. You can vote with your dollars on the names for the snow leopard cubs. The zoo is open every day except Christmas, weather permitting, from 10am to 4:45 in summer, 3:45 in winter — the schedule roughly follows Daylight Savings Time. The zoo is located at 707 Route 9 North in Cape May Court House — you may need to follow a detour while the Garden State Parkway is under construction at Exit 11. Next week: Fishing and Fun

GINGER has been waiting patiently at the shelter since July for someone to take her home. She is a very sweet girl that loves to play. She is a smart girl, and already learned ‘sit’. she gets along with other dogs, and cats, but would have to go to a home with no smaller children. Stop on in the shelter and give Ginger a second chance. She is up to date on all vaccines, spayed, and the adoption fee is only $95.

AMELLIO is very sweet and a social boy that just loves to play. He know how to sit, but would need a little more training. He would be okay in a home with older kids, and other dogs, but not cats. He was adopted before but the owners returned him back to the shelter. If Amellio sounds like a good match for you, stop on in the shelter. He is up to date on all vaccines, neutered, and the adoption fee is only $95.

TURK has been waiting with his brothers and sister at the shelter. he is a younger tiger, and would love to go to a forever home. He is very energetic, and loving. He’s more outgoing than the other two brothers, but they’re still getting used to everything. He love to play, and is very affectionate. If you think Turk or his siblings would be the perfect fit for you, stop on by the shelter and give them a chance.

ORBIT is a very lovable cat. He used to be a house cat, but due to tough times he had to be surrendered to the shelter. He used to live with other cats and dogs so he would be fine with them. He loves to be pet and held, and he do drool because he is so happy to get attention. If you are seeking a loving male cat, come in and see Orbit he will definitely make you smile.
