Talk Of The Town

RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS

Maciek Nabrdalik will be at the Exit Zero Store and Gallery this Friday, September 20 to promote his new book, The Irreversible, and to host a slideshow of his works, photographed all over the world.

Be afraid. It’s the Zombie Mud Run in Wildwood on October 12.

AS REGULAR readers (along with some well-informed irregular readers) will know, we launched this magazine 10 years ago. The first issue, and quite a few after that, featured photographs shot by a 21-year-old Polish man whose day job was working as a lifeguard at the Congress Hall pool. He had shown an interest in photography while working at the pool and Exit Zero thought highly enough of him to make him our first official photographer. That first year, Maciek Nabrdalik handled his new Canon EOS 10D pretty well. He went back to Warsaw that fall and returned to Cape May, and to the pages of Exit Zero, the following summer. We noticed his technique had improved a lot — he had secured a job as a staff photographer on a Polish daily paper. Yes, it was clear that Maciek had huge talent, as witnessed by the international awards that he started to accumulate over the following years and the fact that he was recruited by the world-famous photo agency VII. Now, we’re delighted to see the release of his remarkable new book, The Irreversible, which features portraits and interviews (by Maciek’s wife Agnieszka) with survivors of Nazi death camps. The book has been featured on a number of major websites in the US, including CNN.com, CNBC.com and The New York Times’ site. He has also carried out a series of TV and radio interviews back in Poland. Last week in New York City, the book received its official US launch, along with an exhibition of Maciek’s photographs from the book. We’re stupendously excited to say he will be at the Exit Zero Store and Gallery at 109 Sunset Boulevard this Friday, September 20, for a special Cape May book launch. Maciek will also host a slideshow of some of his stunning works of reportage from across the world, including his acclaimed series on Chernobyl. The book launch party will run from 5pm until 7pm. So come along and meet this great guy, who will forever be a Cape May legend. See you there! ¯ IT IS the fastest-growing international team water sport in the world, and it’s happening in Cape May September 28. The Chamber of Commerce will host the Dragon Boat Festival on the harbor, during which 44 teams (up 12 from last year) of 22 paddlers will race in teak wood watercrafts a 250-meter distance (that’s an eighth of a mile, for the measurement-challenged among us). Channel your The best part? Not just the bragging rights afforded to the winning paddlers inner Viking and take part — that honor went to the Village Bicycle Shop crew last year — but all of (or spectate) the money this event raises for charity... over $10,000 last year. And it’s at the Dragon this coming together for good that affords such a great energy on the day. Boat Festival “What makes this really cool is the sense of teamwork that’s created,” said (above) at Cape Chamber President John Cooke. “And the enormous sense of community.” (Well that, and a May harbor on Cabanas-sponsored beer garden.) September 28. ¯DO NOT miss out on the Zombie Mud Run happening in Wildwood on October 12. The Aleksey Moryakov goal? Keep your brains from being taken by a member of the undead along a 5k course. Visit TheZombieMudeRun.com for more info.

W

Tom Sims reviews “Waiting for Grace”, the new CD from local musician Jimm Ross

ITH haunting melodies and gruff voice, the new CD from Cape May’s Jimm Ross, Waiting for Grace, will either lift you to the right mood or bring the right mood directly to you doorstep. Either way, you’ll be better for spending the time to listen. The words and lyrics that Ross lays down on these tracks are the kind retired celebrity rock and rollers aspire to do after they’ve gotten weary of the same old beat. Ross has a salt-of-the-earth and letme-tell-you-how-it-is sort of voice. It’s a voice that could work in hard rock, R&B, or country — but it’s like cream that’s risen to the top of a bucketload of good ol’ fashioned blues. Well, blues with maybe a little rock infusion for some songs. Although it’s his first CD, Ross is not nearly a newcomer. He has been on the Cape May music scene for quite some time, and this CD has been on his mind for years! The first time I heard him was at Lucky Bones where he played an acoustic version

of “Addicted to Love,” the Robert Palmer tune. On this CD you’ll hear Jimm working with some of Cape May’s best, MQ Murphy, Amy Hufana, Ed Dobbs, Andrew Reeves, John Nesbit, and Tom Naglee, Jr. Three different locations were used to record the collection, with local producers like Gordon Vincent and Collin Pritchard in the mix. “Nothin’ but Time” is my favorite song.

It’s got a great gutsy beat — matches his voice perfectly. Also noteworthy are the simple, calming lyrics in the song entitled Blue: “You were seeing past, past the wounds/we were keeping everything in our shoes/I remember every Saturday you came to my room/and I tried most everything to catch you/and I made it so blue, so blue for you.” Also, the vibe from the song “Who Are You” is as unmistakable in its blues as it is unapologetic. As a side note, Jimm is quite an artist as well. His paintings and sea glass work are beautiful — you really have to see them online to get the full richness of color — oh heck you really got to see them up against the sun to get why they’re so amazing. But until you can, go to www.jimmrossart.com to see more. Jim is as rare a gem as you’ll find from among the growing number of talented musicians who call Cape May home. Look for details on a possible CD release party and watch him at some favorite venues like the Pilot House and Mad Batter.

A Great Place To Stay, Shop & Eat.

West Cape May ...a small town by the sea

Rich in history, West Cape May can trace its beginnings to farmers 400 years ago. Now it’s home to a business district that’s full of quality — and quirks. There are excellent antiques and art shops; affordable, relaxing eateries; beautifully restored B&Bs, and privately held homes with authentic Victorian architecture. In short, West Cape May is the undiscovered jewel of the island. Wilbraham Park hosts several fun festivals throughout the year (see sidebar). But you don’t have to wait for an event to enjoy it. Grab a take-out lunch and picnic in the park under the cool canopy of trees. Then explore the town on foot because it’s so walkable. Or bike because of the great bike paths and country roads. Or drive and not worry about parking. There’s always free parking in West Cape May. Insider Tip... The restaurants and shops are diverse and fun. Not only will you find treasures in West Cape May that you can’t find in other shore towns — you probably can’t find them at home, either. West Cape May is the Best Cape May. Visit westcapemaytoday.com or follow them on Facebook at West Cape May Business Association.

Looking From Lower

Local heroes, happenings, and occasionally a heckle or two... by Lower Township Deputy Mayor Norris Clark

L

OOKING from Lower Township (including the historic towns of Cold Spring, Erma, Fishing Creek, Villas, Schellenger’s Landing, North Cape May and Townbank), we can see that our prosperity is linked to the prosperity of Cape May, West Cape May, Cape May Point, Middle Township and the Wildwoods. Our economy is still driven primarily by tourism, fishing, and retirement, so naturally we must nurture these businesses while fostering new opportunities. For our sake, and for the sake of our children, we must remember... we are all in the same boat. Local Heroes: The business leaders who serve on Lower Township Economic development committee. They’re looking for ways to build our economy and they’ll be presenting their ideas this week to council. Members include: Curtis Bashaw (Cape Resorts), Danny Cohen (Cape Atlantic Fisheries), David Craig (Lucky Bones), Larry Hume (Sunset Beach), Keith Laudeman (Lobster House), John McNulty

(Bayshore Landscaping), Jay Sporl (Seashore Campsites), Mary Stewart (Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities), Ernie Utsch (Utsch’s Marina), and Rick Weber (South Jersey Marina). Happenings: TEDxCapeMay comes to Cape May Convention Hall on Sunday, October 20 for a full day of presentations under the theme of “Nature & Nurture.” The program features outstanding artists, scientists, writers, and social entrepreneurs who have “ideas worth spreading.” Ryan Krill of Cape May Brewery (in Lower

Township!) will speak, along with writer R. Jay Magill (whose family summers in Lower Township), who will travel from Germany to present a talk on “Sincerity.” Recently added to the lineup is social entrepreneur Pam Dorr, just featured on the CBS Evening News for her innovative efforts in turning her town economy around in Alabama. Also, Stockton College selected Mary Lou Galantino to speak about surviving cancer, while a Cape May Regional High School student will also be selected to present. Thanks to lead sponsor Exit Zero, and sponsors Cape May Forum, Congress Hall Hotel, Midnight Media Group, and Morey’s Piers. See TEDxCapeMay.com. A Few Heckles: Yes, we’ve heard a few heckles about the preliminary FEMA flood maps produced for our area, the need to spay and neuter our pets, the call for more pride in our gateway roadways, not to mention a lot of concern about keeping the regional nature of our high school. From Bayshore to seashore, and from cats to our kids, remember, we are all in the same boat! Write to me at: norrisclark@me.com.

The book everyone in Cape May is talking about It was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s, but after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now, finally... this remarkable story can be told, and enjoyed. These beautiful hardcover, illustrated books signed by the late author’s grandson, George Carlisle, are available at the Exit Zero Store & Gallery. Or at our online store: ezstore.us. The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

DO SO love Hallowe’en. I know, I know, it’s a little early, I can hear you say, but this year the D’Catur Mansion Hallowe’en Party will be the grandest one ever, and I need to prepare. After all, last year’s spectacular seemed impossible to top — those of you who attended will attest to the splendor of the 1:1 scale replica of The Cutty Sark tea clipper that sailed up the man-made canal from the ocean to the garden, and the splendor of the 300 couture-clad ghosts who lined the decks ands rigging, singing the theme tune from Ghostbusters in perfect unison. The three tons of fireworks that erupted from the cannon ports were, to the lucky souls not accidentally blinded by the display, surely the most glorious ever to light up Cape May’s night sky (and set fire to a dozen of so buildings). My own costume: Lord Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar, except in historically innacurate gold lamé, was a glittering triumph. And who could forget Young Albert, with every single hair on his furry little body waxed and dyed black, standing straight out

to make him the best sea anemone EVER. Of course, he insisted on having actual poison on the end of every one, for authenticity: I secretly switched out the fatal nerve toxin he demanded for a simple and temporary hallucinogenic. I must say, after the first couple of accidental jabs at the party, once word got out there were queues of people waiting to be pricked by the little devil. Of course, the finale, a torchlit procession led by a score of defrocked priests, got a wee bit out of hand thanks to those of

you who are too cheap to purchase quality cotton bedsheets for use in your ghost costume and instead opted for 100% nylon. One spark, and we had a dozen shrieking flaming ghosts running around spreading the conflagration, and in the end fire trucks from 30 miles around had to be summoned. I must say, though, that the overall effect was quite magnificent, and the presence of scores of burly firefighters simply added to the already hormone-charged atmosphere. Of course, there was some redecorating work needed afterwards, and it took my faithful manservant, Kitchener, and I a whole day to root out the last partygoers from their hiding places in the upper rooms and basement, not to mention the well-known local politician who we found in flagrante in the trophy room with a local planning official: I tell you, what they were up to had even the stuffed animal heads staring in shocked disbelief. This year, I have something even more special planned: I will not spoil the surprise, except to say: Amityville! And attendance is mandatory! You have been warned!

Here’s To Your Health

I

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

T’S NOT possible for most of us to imagine what growing our own food and livestock for survival was like. Finding the land, clearing trees and rocks, getting the right seeds, making sure there is adequate water during droughts, fending off predators, managing invasive insects, harvesting and storing for winter and praying you don’t get injured or sick... these are some of the realities we never have to deal with. We, on the other hand, have to clip our coupons, drive to the supermarket, find parking, get a cart, go up and down the aisles while listening to music, chatting with neighbors... the hardest thing we do is bag our own groceries — and even then, we sometimes get help. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) are farming co-ops where someone with the skills and knowledge to run a larger farm will sell shares in that farm’s harvest and will provide you with weekly baskets of vegetables and fruit. Also, more and more people each year are putting their own hoe in the ground in their backyards and

front yards, attempting to at least supplement their diets with homegrown produce. I recently met an extended family in Cape May doing just that. Jess Bourne, a gym member, started talking about her diet in class one day and how she only eats organic and often gets it from her mom’s garden. “My mom is amazing. She helps run my step-dad’s accounting office and is a financial advisor and raises her own chickens, turkeys, ducks, and rabbits on a small plot behind the office in Rio Grande. And she grows organic vegetables and fruits right in her yard in Cape May.” The first question we all had was about killing the critters. Surely she has someone

else do the dirty work. “ Nope. She does it herself!” I spoke to Amy Weinberger, Jess’s mom, about her passion for growing her own food and raising birds and bunnies. “I grew up in a military family. My dad was an avid birder and mom was a great gardener. They taught us to care for the land. I respect the animals and wouldn’t leave their slaughter to anyone else.” Fair enough. How many of us would be able to do the same? Not many. Not me. Amy and her husband, Keating Weinberger, just purchased land and a building in Lower Township, near West Cape May where they will have their office and expand her gardens and livestock. She wants to get a cow and some lambs. The Weinbergers are part of a growing organic community, joining Beach Plum Farm in West Cape May, which was started by Curtis Bashaw to supply meat and produce to his restaurants; Cape May Market; Good Earth Organic Eatery; Bliss and the roadside stands. Supporting “locally grown” is good for the economy and good for the environment and really good for YOU.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I’m planning my annual Halloween bash. I have two friends, however, who are no longer speaking to each other. I’m sure as soon as I push “send” on the party invites, one or both will be calling me to ask if the other will be there, followed by threats to skip the festivities. What to do? I’ve invited both of them, and as far as I’m concerned it’s their problem. Am I wrong, or should I try to be the peacemaker here? – Halloween Hostess Dear Hostess If you are asking the Answer Lady if it is your job to run interference between two warring friends, the answer is “no, it is not.” The Answer Lady has never been a fan of ultimatums, particularly pointless ones. You are also correct that it is up to your friends to maintain civilized public behavior.

Presumably this willl be a costume party — one could always hope that perhaps the two of them won’t even recognize one another. In the meantime, when your phone rings after your email (and if the Answer Lady knows human nature, it will), repeat as follows: “Yes, Martha, I’ve invited Sylvia, along with every other living soul I know. I hope you will attend, but will miss you if you don’t.” Dear Answer Lady I don’t drink alcohol, so I never keep it in

Activity Of The Week

T

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Women going fishing.

RY something new on your Cape May vacation — go fishing. Cape May is one of the America’s largest commercial fishing ports, bringing in almost 100 million pounds of fish every year. It’s also home to the Mid-Atlantic $500,000, one of the world’s great sport fishing tournaments. The experts know it’s a great place to fish, and beginners will find it’s also a great place to learn. Why not grab some friends and get your feet wet this weekend? The Nature Center of Cape May is sponsoring a Women’s Fishing and Fun Weekend this Saturday and Sunday, September 21-22. Women have always fished for food. Haenyo, or Korean mermaids, have been diving for abalone, sea urchin, and octopus for 1700 years. Hawaiian women used basket traps to catch shrimp and fish. Gaugin painted pictures of fisherwomen in Tahiti in the 1890s. For at least the last 500 years, women have also been fishing for sport. An English nun named Dame Julian Berners wrote a Treatyse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle in 1496. California newspapers were captivated

in 1921 when Mr Keith Spalding landed a 426-pound swordfish. Today, experts estimate that 15 million women are fishing for fun — so many that the sport fishing industry has studied gender differences in fishing. You may not be surprised to learn that women have less leisure time than men, are more likely to share information about fishing spots and techniques with others, and

are more likely than men to stop fishing when they’ve caught what they’ll eat, eschewing the catch-and-release that men favor. The Nature Center of Cape May is an award-winning environmental education center which offers marine science, natural history and environmental programs yearround for adults, families and children. Their Fishing and Fun Weekend features a Saturday workshop (8am to 5pm) for women who love the outdoors but have never tried fishing. The morning features instruction, rigging and practice. After lunch, you’ll board the Cape May Lady for a four-hour offshore fishing trip. The cost is $80, $60 for NJ Audubon members. Extend the fun on Sunday with a kayak eco-tour of Cape May harbor and the surrounding salt marsh — maybe with a little more fishing. Then, you’re off to the Lobster House’s Schooner for lunch al fresco, followed by a tour of Cape May Winery, where you’ll learn which wines go best with seafood. Sunday’s events are also $80, and lunch is extra. Call (609) 898-8848 for more information. Next week: Enter the Dragon Boat

PRINCESS has been waiting patiently at the shelter for someone to take her home. She is very sweet, social and affectionate. She is okay in a home with kids, but not with cats, or other dogs. If you think Princess sounds like a good match for you, stop on in the shelter and give her a second chance! She is up to date on all vaccines, spayed, and the adoption fee is $95.

TOOTSIE is a three-year-old, 35lb pitmix. She came to the shelter last October as a stray. With s body harness she enjoys leisurely walks and is affectionate to everyone she meets. She quickly learned how to sit, wait, and watch her trainer. She will follow the trainer’s request to come and find it. Occasionally, Toots doesn’t like other dogs, but she will adjust to almost any family dynamic with positive reinforcement and continued love.

«

BRADY only has three legs, but that does not make him a high-maintenance dog. In fact, the truth is quite the opposite! Although he is quite healthy, long walks are not in the cards for obviously reasons. He loves to just sit with his head in a human’s lap and hang out. Maybe you are a dog person who is busy and would feel guilty not having several hours a day to exercise your pet... in that case, Brady is likely the perfect match.

Join the Fun.
