Talk Of The Town

RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS

Photographer Brian Nice (second from left) and his team, pictured here, posted this picture to the My Point of View blog on August 27. They’ll set off on their crosscountry journey this week.

Be afraid. It’s the Zombie Mud Run in Wildwood on October 12.

In 1979, BRIAN Nice was part of a 12-man relay team that ran from Los Angeles to Maryland, landing him in the Guinness Book of World Records. And he worked as a photographer for international magazines like Elle. But four years ago, Brian suffered a traumatic brain injury. Mentally, Brian is fine, but he can no longer walk, and he lives with constant body shakes. “I make one helluva margarita,” he says. In order to offer inspiration to other TBI survivors, Brian will begin another cross-country trip this week, this time in the car. Along the way, with the help of a team, he’ll shoot photos of America. The project, called My Point of View, will culminate in a coffee table book, a gallery exhibition, and a documentary film. Donations have been collected to fund the trip, and any surplus will be donated to New York’s Therapeutic Equestrian Center, which helps TBI survivors. And what does all this have to do with our island? Cape May is the first stop on Brian’s 12-stop journey. He’ll only be here one day, Friday the 27th, but be sure to check out his blog (mypointofviewproject. wordpress.com) for updates on what he’s seeing and doing. ¯ YOU know about brides — from the blushing kind to the bridezilla kind — but the lima bean kind? This will be Rachel Trasatti, a North Cape May local, on October 12, the day of the West Cape May Lima Bean Festival in Wilbraham Park. Every year, the festival celebrates Cape May’s storied agricultural past with entertainment, lima-inspired food and crafts, and a crowning of the lima bean queen. This year, in a who-knew-things-could-get-any-quirkier addendum to the regularly scheduled programming, the festival will also celebrate the love between Rachel and fiance Robert Lester. The couple, along with Rachel’s five-year-old daughter, spent many days this summer admiring the shady space that is Wilbraham Park. “When most people think of having a wedding in Cape May,” Rachel told us, “they think of the beach. But West Cape May is a special, hidden part of town. One day, I said to Robert, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to get married here?’.” Of course, the couple hadn’t anticipated tying the knot this soon — Rachel’s dress hasn’t even arrived yet, and she’s still not clear on all the details of her ceremony. But last month, when friend Todd Land, a member of the Friends Eat your lima soup AND watch of Wilbraham Park, came into Big Lots in North Cape May, where Rachel a wedding at and Robert both work, and he and Rachel got to talking, it seemed like a fun this year’s Lima idea. Event organizer Diane Flanegan, loved it immediately. Bean Festival. Approximately 30 of the couple’s family members and friends have been Aleksey Moryakov invited... along with the entire town. You’ll be able to see the wedding, too, if you’re at the festival around 4pm. Just look for the woman carrying the lima bean bouquet. “I always came to this event as a kid, hoping to be the lima bean queen,” Rachel told us. “Now I get to be the lima bean bride.” Congratulations to the happy couple, who are expecting a little bean of their own this March.

The Movie Column

F

Tom Sims reviews “Waiting for Grace”, the new CD from local musician Jimm Ross

ILM enthusiasts throughout the region are eagerly waiting to hear what our main feature will be for Saturday night at this year’s Cape May Film Festival. The dates of the festival are October 25-27, exclusively at the hippest little movie theater we like to call the Chalfonte Hotel! “Okay!” you say. “Enough already — what’s the movie?” This year we are hosting Cape May native Chris Carroll and his Academy Award-nominated film, Beasts of the Southern Wild. The film was nominated for four Oscars including Best Picture, Best Directing (New York City native Benh Zeitlin), Best Leading Actress (wonderful child actress Quvenzhane Wallis), and Best Screen adaptation. When I reviewed the movie in this column months ago, I praised it for being a true example of modern allegory — beautifully shot (which was backed up by a Best Cinematography award at the Sundance Film Festival). It also won big at Cannes Film Festival and won the American Film

The remarkable Beasts of the Southern Wild will be the main feature at Cape May Film Festival. Institute’s 2013 Best Movie of the Year. Beasts of the Southern Wild tells the story of Hushpuppy, a small girl living in ramshackle island town affectionately called The Bathtub by locals because its propensity to flood. She lives in her own rundown space, a trailer of sorts that sits perched high off the ground. Her father lives in another shack next door. He can often be seen wandering the dirt roads of town either inebriated or in a gown

from a recent stay at the local hospital. The story unfolds as the town prepares for flooding. There are a few locals who are adamant about riding out the storm (sound familiar, Cape May?). Hushpuppy and her father stay, surviving in their boat which is really just a makeshift old truck bed. The film follows Hushpuppy’s quest to live a fulfilled life in a failed town. She must ultimately face the demons that roam her life like the wild boars that roam the region. The film is beautifully shot with compelling images of a dilapidated town overwhelmed by rising water. The actors are newcomers in the strictest sense. The same is true for Ben Zeitlen as director and co-screenwriter. The storytelling is beautifully subtle, and the dialogue is sparse and poignant. The film depicts a hard life with little relief from suffering, but it is an important film to watch for its beauty and ultimately its focus on the human condition seen through a child’s eyes. Learn more about the Cape May Film Festival at www.capemayfilm.org or by emailing capemayfilm@hotmail.com.

A Great Place To Stay, Shop & Eat.

West Cape May ...a small town by the sea

Rich in history, West Cape May can trace its beginnings to farmers 400 years ago. Now it’s home to a business district that’s full of quality — and quirks. There are excellent antiques and art shops; affordable, relaxing eateries; beautifully restored B&Bs, and privately held homes with authentic Victorian architecture. In short, West Cape May is the undiscovered jewel of the island. Wilbraham Park hosts several fun festivals throughout the year (see sidebar). But you don’t have to wait for an event to enjoy it. Grab a take-out lunch and picnic in the park under the cool canopy of trees. Then explore the town on foot because it’s so walkable. Or bike because of the great bike paths and country roads. Or drive and not worry about parking. There’s always free parking in West Cape May. Insider Tip... The restaurants and shops are diverse and fun. Not only will you find treasures in West Cape May that you can’t find in other shore towns — you probably can’t find them at home, either. West Cape May is the Best Cape May. Visit westcapemaytoday.com or follow them on Facebook at West Cape May Business Association.

The Old Fogey

F

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ALL, you say?! This is not fall! This paltry smattering of brown leaves is not fit to be called even the prelude to fall. Why, I have not seen a drift of leaves over a foot deep! In My Day, fall in Cape May saw thousands of giant redwoods and oaks (all since felled for the building of The Great Cape May elephant, that stood 300 feet tall and had a slide down inside the trunk that fired the daring out into the ocean so far that they were closer to Philly than here, for the swim back. Sadly, the elephant is no more, thanks to the careless overlapping festivals of “The Modern World of Gasoline” and “Firelighters and Matchmakers Showcase” that took place in the conference-center belly of the wooden pachyderm simultaneously, and a reckless accident with a discarded cigar by an anonymous but surely blameless attendee who for the sake of dignity we should not continue to chase after all these decades, eh?) But in these days the leaves would fall so thick and fast that snowploughs had to

be used to keep the roads clear, and casual pedestrians who measured under six feet tall were often buried until spring. Why, some of the largest leaves were the size of coffee tables and weighed near as much, crushing hundreds of hapless “peepers” every season. That in itself was no loss: Fall is not to be looked at with open mouth, but the be run through, yelling, in stout shoes. And the golden glow: well, I tell you, it was as if the sun had fallen to earth, and anyone venturing out of doors without sun-

glasses and sunblock would be blind and tanned in under a minute. Of course, there were downsides: the local squirrel population grew exponentially, not in numbers but in size: we had one rodents that was larger than a horse, and bad tempered to boot. He would do anything to get your nuts off you, that one, and in the end had to be hunted down by Young Albert and another 5,000 imported Yorkshire terriers. Of course, once the giant squirrel had been taken care of, the Yorkies went feral and we had to bring in a giant bear to rid us of them (except for Albert, who returned home chastened and wiser, with a nice little squirrel pelt hat at a rakish angle on his head). And when the bear became apex predator, it took a telegram to Ernie Hemingway who came down with his elephant gun and shot a hole the size of a man’s head through the ursine menace. Of course, Ernie then took up residence in The Admiral Hotel and we had to demolish the place to force him to leave town. Now THAT was fall.

Here’s To Your Health

I

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

HAVE a lot of empathy for people with weight gain issues, especially those who are severely overweight. I wasn’t always that way and like a lot of people felt that overweight people were that way of their own accord; if they would just eat right and exercise the weight would fall off them. But coming to understand the role that hormones and genetics play has changed the way I see obesity. An article by Tara Parker-Pope, entitled “The Fat Trap”, examines what it has been like for her trying to lose weight and the most recent research on how weight loss affects the body. I have had thousands of conversations about weight loss over the last 19 years and the constant theme has been the inability to keep weight off that has already been lost. (Meal replacement shakes and pills are a short-term fix.) The joke about losing the same 20 pounds 10 times over is pretty accurate. “You must be eating too much,” was my normal response and some were. But research, according to the article, is pointing to a real difference in the ability for some people to

lose weight compared with a lean person. First, if you lose 10% or more of your body weight your metabolic rate can slow down, making it necessary for you to eat even less to maintain that weight then someone who is normally at that weight. And your body and brain collude to get your body weight back up. An Australian weight loss study talked about this biologically altered state: “Their still plump bodies were acting as if they were starving and were working overtime to regain the weight they lost.” On the other hand there is a registry of success stories started by Rena Wing, Professorof Psychiatry at Brown University,

the flying fish studio 130 park blvd west cape may

where anyone who has lost at least 30 pounds and kept it off at least one year can add their name to the list. She feels environmental factors are partially responsible for the fail rate and that, “We live in an environment with food cues all of the time.” So if you control your immediate environment, what you keep in your home, for instance you stand a better chance. Here are some of the things that I have found work... 1. You HAVE to exercise with intensity. Strolling on a treadmill while reading or watching TV won’t cut it. It needs to be your sole focus and you have to keep the resistance high. What got you results in September won’t be adequate come October. Your body will rise to the level you set for it and then will be able to acclimate to it fairly quickly if you don’t stay ahead of it. Remember, the brain and body are colluding to get you to eat again. 2. Be consistent and be honest about what goes into your mouth. Write it down. 3. Get a coach or partner who is honest. And finally... good luck!

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady You recently had a letter from a singleton who travels often and wanted a pet. I’m in the same boat, but I know it would be cruel for me to adopt one of the sweet dogs or cats I see in Exit Zero every week and the ones that are all over Facebook. My heart goes out to these poor creatures, but I can’t turn my life upside down to adopt a cat. How do I combat the guilt? I’m not rich or I’d write a giant check. — Solo Sam Dear Sam The Answer Lady understands. If she had the room and finances, she’d have dozens of critters of the feline, canine AND equine varieties. Sadly, life is full of inequities, and for every responsible, loving human who would open their heart to an animal in need if they could, someone

is pushing a Chihuahua wearing a tutu in a stroller. (A well-intentioned someone, certainly, but still.) You are correct that it would not be fair to a dog or cat to sit home alone for hours upon hours, waiting to greet you again as if you have risen from the dead, which we know they are given to doing whether we have been gone for days or for 15 minutes. One way to assuage your guilt for not being able to take in a homeless animal would be to volunteer at either the county

Activity Of The Week

A

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: the Dragon Boat Festival.

CCORDING to reality television, the Real Housewives of New Jersey spend their days squabbling and spending. In reality, the Real Housewives of Cape May are working to support their community. Come cheer for them, and 41 other dragon boat teams, as they race to raise funds for charity this Saturday, September 28 at Cape May harbor. The Real Housewives television franchise hit the airwaves of the Bravo network in 2006. It was billed as a realistic spin on ABC’s hit Desperate Housewives, a series that depicts the secrets behind the perfectly manicured lawns on Wisteria Lane. There, four fictional characters go to great, though often misguided, lengths to protect their families, from taking drugs to muster the energy to sew the costumes for a school play, to working difficult and demeaning jobs, to hiding evidence of murder. Along the way they find, lose and regain love, money and dignity. The Real Housewives series features “characters” who seem to struggle only with party planning

and petty sniping, but in the midst of a recession, they let viewers see that money doesn’t buy happiness. The Real Housewives of Cape May have better things to do, as they prepare to participate in Cape May’s Dragon Boat Festival again this year, “paddling in pearls” to support the Nature Center of Cape May. Teams of 22 to 20 paddlers, one drummer, and

a steersman provided by the festival, will compete in heats to move a boat the size of a school bus along a 250-meter straight course. Each cleverly named team paddles in support of a cause — my favorites from last year included Dragon Leukemia Under and the Flaming Turkeys, who raised money for food baskets. Many teams also sport costumes and makeup along with their lifejackets. It’s too late to add your team — they sold out in August — but you’re just in time to come out and cheer the teams on. The Dragon Boat Festival, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May, takes place near the Nature Center, at 1600 Delaware Avenue, from 9am to 5pm. It is a true festival atmosphere, with music, lion dancers, craft tents, a beer garden, stilt walkers, decorated team tents, a karate demonstration and more. Although the team who takes home the big trophy has bragging rights, the Cape May community is the real winner. Next week: Oktoberfest

SABLE, is a purebred ChowChow. He is a very well behaved and social boy. He does have little trouble seeing, He knows a few tricks like ‘paw’ and ‘sit’, and he could learn more. He cannot go to a home with kids. The people here would like for him to go to someone with experience with ChowChows. Stop on in the shelter and give Sable a second chance. He is up to date on all vaccines and is neutered.

«

COCO, is a fun-loving spunky shepherd — he loves to run and play. When you get to know him he loves snuggling and cuddling. He would love to be in an active house where people are ready to play with him. Coco has been bounced from home to home and needs that forever home where he can get comfortable. If he looks like a dog you could have tons of fun with please come to the shelter to meet him.

Fall Special

«

BRADY only has three legs, but that does not make him a high-maintenance dog. In fact, the truth is quite the opposite! Although he is quite healthy, long walks are not in the cards for obviously reasons. He loves to just sit with his head in a human’s lap and hang out. Maybe you are a dog person who is busy and would feel guilty not having several hours a day to exercise your pet... in that case, Brady is likely the perfect match.

Bird Droppings

M

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

AYBE you have already been to the Hawk Watch Platform at Cape May Point State Park. Even visitors who have limited interest in birds make a trip to the Hawk Watch part of their Cape May routine. And why not? The chances of seeing thousands of migrating hawks is good. There are lots of friendly, experienced hawk-watchers on hand to point out and identify high flying birds of prey. And, since there is no admission fee, the price is right. There are even loaner binoculars on hand courtesy of Swarovski Optik, the hawk count’s official Corporate Sponsor. But, just in case you are not a platform regular, here are a few DOs and DON’Ts to help you get the most out of your first foray to the Raptor Capital of North America. Don’t worry about what you don’t know. The difference between a new hawk-watcher and an experienced one is that thus far inexperienced hawk-watchers have mis-identified very few birds. Experienced hawk watchers have mis-identified thousands.

Ask questions but don’t direct them to the official counter. He’s very preoccupied. Questions should be directed toward the interpretive naturalists who are on hand daily from early morning to late afternoon. Questions about non-raptors are fine, too. The folks from CMBO are equal opportunity observers. When on the platform, step lightly, vibration distorts the image in binoculars and spotting scopes. Parents PLEASE don’t let your kids run up and down elevated deck or worse

Sole Sister 5 Mile Run and 2 Mile Walk Saturday, October 5, 2013 Race Registration $25 Register online at www.tnteventmanagement.com Race day registration is also available, but t-shirts are not guaranteed. Medals are awarded toa the top three in each age category for the 5 mile race The race is dedicated to Sisters of Saint Joseph who are celebrating their Golden Jubilee Joan Dollinger, Administrator (609) 884-8708 All proceeds go to support the turn of the century retreat house which is a sponsored work of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia. Professional race timing to be provided by TNT Event Management

yet, bring their bicycles. Don’t be a spotting scope hog. If you are viewing through a scope other than your own, when you get a satisfactory view at whatever interesting bird the scope is trained on, step aside and let the next person get their look. Accept the fact that other migratory birds and butterflies and dragonflies are going to be pointed out with as much enthusiasm as eagles, hawks and falcons. Maybe you don’t realize that hawks are attracted to dragonflies and other smaller birds so, if you want to see more hawks, it’s pretty good to have of those other species in the same air space. And finally, make sure you have dark glasses and or a hat with a brim. Cape May Bird Observatory is THE place for all your nature needs. Located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), the store is open daily from 9:30am to 4:30pm. There’s so much to choose from — binoculars, spotting scopes, jewelry, clothing, hats, puzzles, hand-painted decorations, feeders, plus some special bargains in the used and vintage books section.

LCMR Senior Emily Levin has high expectations as a captain for the Lower Cape May Regional varsity field hockey team. The daughter of Reid and Pam Levin, Emily plays both field hockey and lacrosse while balancing AP classes on top of that. She says that staying focused and time management are the keys to her successful four years at LCMR. When asked how it feels to be a captain of the varsity field hockey team, Emily said, “A lot of pressure is on me and Bela [cocaptain] because we have a new coach. However Coach Hoch did a great job of encouraging us as a whole and continuing to play LCMR field hockey.” Emily has high expectations for her future, as she begins to explore her options for college. Her top three schools are George Mason, University of Delaware and University of North Carolina where she hopes to pursue a degree in the science field. STORY: ALEC LEVIN / PHOTO: JAKE FITZMAURICE
