Eliza Crawford, who honed her sailing skills in Cape May, is raising money alongside the Penn State Sailing Club for pediatric cancer research.

¯CANCER is particularly heart-wrenching when it affects children, and Eliza Crawford ­— who worked for Exit Zero and Congress Hall this summer, and who is a seasoned sailing instructor on Cape Island — is helping to make it just a little less so. Eliza, a Penn State University senior, is participating for the fourth time this winter in the school’s THON, the culminating event of a year-long fundraising effort, and the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. How it works? More than 15,000 young adults from different organizations — fraternities, clubs, special interest groups — collect donations for the Four Diamonds Fund, which supports pediatric cancer research and provides financial support for the families of diagnosed children.

This past weekend, Eliza and other members of the Penn State Sailing Club were canning for cash outside of the Cape May Court House Acme, where they brought in $950 in under five hours. In February, Eliza will be one of the students participating in THON, which is a 46-hour dance marathon at Penn State that does not allow for sitting or sleeping. Since 1977, THON has raised over $101 million, with over $12 million brought in last year alone.

“Seeing the kids on THON weekend that are part of the Four Diamonds Fund — in treatment or out — and knowing we’ve been able to help them,” Eliza said, “that’s the most rewarding part.”

Eliza will also be running the Philadelphia Half-Marathon on November 17 to raise money for the same charity. To make a donation, simply log onto thon.org, and click the “donate now” tab. From there, you’ll have the option of clicking on participating organizations, including Penn State Sailing Club. Good luck, Eliza! ¯ LAST weekend, the Exit Zero team carved (or tried to carve) pumpkins purchased from Rea’s Farm. ’Tis the season, which means two things: First of all, owners Les and Diane Rea will be starting up their hayrides this weekend, so you can pick your own jack-be-little or Atlantic Giant. Okay, actually, you can’t pick the latter variety — they weigh up to 300 pounds, and the weather this season has inhibited their growth. You’ll have to settle for the more appropriately sized kind of pumpkin, or take home a pie or loaf of bread sold in the Rea’s farm market and made with their homegrown pumpkins.

Diane and Les Second of all, Rea’s Harvest Rea share some County Fair — complete with adult and kid-friendly vendors, hayrides, love in the and pony rides — is coming up. “You wouldn’t believe the looks on some pumpkin patch. of these kids’ faces, when they get to pick their own pumpkin,” Diane said.

Aleksey Moryakov “Some of these children have never seen anything growing in a field before; they’ve only been in the supermarket. We really enjoy working with the children.”

In fact, the couple has even made their hayrides accessible for wheelchair-bound kids.

Tom Sims previews the Cape May Film Festival, on October 25-27

ALLING all movie fans! This is the event of the year for those who cannot get enough of great movies. The Cape May Film Festival will start Friday, October 25 and finish up on Sunday, October 27 exclusively at our favorite historical landmark hotel-turned movie theater, The Chalfonte Hotel.

We have a great lineup for Friday night as NFL Hall of Fame sports writer Ray Didinger will be joined by CBS Sports Announcer Glen Macnow to present the best sports films of all time. This is a great program even if you’re not a sports enthusiast because as we know any great film includes timeless universal elements that make you stand up and cheer for your hero or jeer for the opposing team.

Saturday night we will feature the Oscarnominated film Beasts of the Southern Wild, and co-producer Chris Carroll (a native of Middle Township). Before we kick off that evening, you will want to attend the festival of short films taking place all day long.

The remarkable Beasts of the Southern Wild will be the main feature at Cape May Film Festival.

Jersey filmmakers and those who’ve never screened in the Garden State. Two must-see short flicks: Manfred and the Waiting Room and Not Anymore: A Story of Revolution — but there are many more to watch (starting at 11:00am on Saturday — hey we’re serious about our short films!).

We will have special documentary segments including sports profiles, Cape May locals, and Hurricane Sandy relief. These are

great short films central to a theme and distinguished by their great storytelling. And don’t forget Late Night Saturday (which, because this is Cape May, starts at 9:30pm).

These are great films that have a special place on the program because of how well they were made, but there simply wasn’t enough time to put them on during the day.

Stefan Prosky, Curator of the Cape May Film Festival, is very pleased with this year’s program. Reviewers had to reject more than half of the films submitted, but it just means we had to maintain a high standard for our audience, he points out. He will be joined by Guest Curator John Columbus and the Black Maria Film Festival program, always praised by our attendees.

On Sunday, the program continues with three great features and a tasty brunch.

The Old Fogey

F

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ALL is a time for knitwear. All summer we have sweated in our cotton, fluttered in our silks and flexed in our Lycra swimsuits, and now it is time for some sophistication. I have had the staff unseal the Wool Freezer (in the sub-basement, where the nuclear bunker used to be: in light of advances in nuclear yield, and the threat of the Zombie Apocalypse, we decided that was not secure enough, and had a special facility constructed 200 feet below street level. That left a 5,000 sq-ft air-tight space: obviously it was the perfect place for my legendary wool collection).

It always takes a few days for the space to rise from Absolute Zero to room temperature, and of course we have to take great care not to wake those special guests we have cryogenically frozen down there: a mix of old friends and enemies who asked to be/were deemed better being preserved for the future, including Ernie Hemingway, Walt Disney and the real JFK. Also a score of Shoebies who over the years wandered into the D’Catur

Mansion and Saw Too Much, so had to be removed from society until that time that the secrets they stumbled upon have been perfected and announced to a grateful world.

Once thawed, we (myself, Young Albert and the household staff) are outfitted in matching ensembles for the first chill day.

Wool hats, wool jackets over wool shirts and very fine merino wool vests, then wool pants held up by a wool belt over snug wool underpants, and finally comfortable wool socks inside tightly woven woolen shoes. Wool

gloves, of course, and a wool cover for my walking cane. Albert in particular adores his Fall wool: the fibers mask his canine musk, and allow him to pass for a particularly small sheep and sneak up on prey.

Thus outfitted, the first day the temperature at noon dips below 55F, we all stride out in a near-silent, russet-hued, soft-edged mob, secure in the knowledge that we are both cosy and also cool. We check the weather forecast carefully: there was that day in 1956 where we got caught in a downpour and within 30 seconds weighed 10 times our usual, slowing and swelling so that we eventually were squelching along at glacial speed, smelling like a flock of elderly, incontinent sheep.

When the sun came out, and the clouds of steam finally dissipated, our fine outfits had shrunk to doll-size, giving passersby the notion that Cape May had been invaded by a group of pale, handmade Hulks. It took a pair of scissors and three hours in the E.R. for us all to be snipped free. The smirking doctor only calmed down after cutting my cane free, and receiving a sharp blow to the temple.

Here’s To Your Health

HE Center for Disease Control just released a report which says, “Anti-microbial resistance is one of our most serious health threats. Infections from resistant bacteria are now too common, and some pathogens have become resistant to multiple types or classes of antibiotics.”

We all know someone who went into the hospital for an operation, only to end up with an extended stay due to a staph infection- an infection contracted from the hospital environment itself.

The report goes on, “CDC estimates that in the US, more than two million people are sickened every year with antibiotic-resistant infections, with at least 23,000 dying as a result. The estimates are based on conservative assumptions, and are likely minimum estimates.”

It used to be the case that antibiotics, such as penicillin, could be counted on to kill almost all commonly known infections. But that is just not the case anymore. And there are a number of contributing factors. They have been over-prescribed, often being given

to patients whose conditions don’t call for them. The report estimates that 50% of people given antibiotics don’t need them. Also, the animals we eat, such as beef cattle, are given feed laced with antibiotics to prevent and control disease and promote growth.

Preventing infections is one of the best ways to protect hospital patients. But the standards used in operating rooms in this country are not even on par with those used in Dietz & Watson hot dog factories.

Ventilation, which cleans and recirculates the air 500 times per hour. The typical hospital room uses a system which recirculates the air 20-40 times an hour.

Ultra Clean is the standard used in most Western European countries and has proven to reduce airborne infections by a large degree. Why don’t we use it? Lack of political will, it would seem. It costs about $300,000$500,000 to set up an Ultra Clean operating theater. Hospitals and insurance companies have enormous payouts every year due to infections and malpractice — why won’t they demand the best cleaning technology?

It used to be that half of all operations resulted in the death of the patient: “The operations was a success, but the patient died” was a common refrain. Antibiotics have been the difference between life and death for those other 50%. Now, due to overuse, we can’t count on them any more. It seems only prudent to clean up our operating rooms to give all of us a better chance of survival. It can easily be classified as a “moral imperative”. It’s time we demand better from out medical community and our politicians.

This week: Oktoberfest comes to Cape May... by Catherine Dugan

OMETIMES you get together with friends for a wedding or other special occasion, and you leave saying, “We should do this more often.”

Oktoberfest was born of that feeling. In 1810, when Bavarian King Ludwig married Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, they celebrated with a festival on a local meadow, with horseracing, music, a parade, and, of course, beer. Everyone had such a good time that they decided to do it again the next year, and then the year after that, and a tradition was born.

The 16-day festival kicks off in September — I know, right? — with a 12-gun salute and the official tapping of the first keg by the mayor, who proclaims, “Ozapft is!” or “It is tapped!” Traditionally, men sport lederhosen and Bavarian hats, complete with goat hair to show their wealth. Women wear the dirndl, with the bow on the left if they are single. Local beer brewers show off their Oktoberfestbier, the aged, darker beer with alcohol content hovering nearer 6% than the 5% of say, a regular Beck’s. Tourists who encountered the festival naturally had a great

time, and borrowed the tradition. Countries around the world celebrate their own versions of Oktoberfest, with the largest outside of Bavaria held in Canada.

Cape May’s Oktoberfest includes many traditional Bavarian elements, such as German music and a variety of beers. The silly hat tradition is represented, with beer mug hats supplementing the Bavarian hats. Most people skip the dirndls in favor of sweatshirts

and sunglasses, as the day is usually sunny.

Jackson Street is closed to traffic, and people dance in the streets, between stalls whose vendors sell art, antiques, jewelry, clothing, and Cape May souvenirs. Businesses turn their porches into beer gardens, and many homeowners throw parties. You can dine on sausages, cheese and pretzels to help you moderate your beer intake, or choose harvest festival staples like popcorn and caramel apples, served by adorable Cub Scouts. Their technique of apple slices served in a bowl, with caramel poured on top, makes the apple easy to share, and yet you don’t seem to buy fewer apples — very clever. Non-Bavarian selections like crabcakes, funnel cake, and empanadas are also represented.

The smell of all these delicacies scents the air, and mingles with the rich, foamy scent of beer kegs. It’s sort of like a tailgate party with shopping instead of a football game. Cape May’s Oktoberfest takes place on Jackson Street this Saturday, October 5, from 10am to 5pm. Don’t wait for a wedding — bring a few Freunde to Cape May and make your own special occasion.

HIRTY years ago, monarch butterflies were a visual blight.

The peak flight of the season always coincided with a big sharp-shinned hawk migration, but the air was so thick with insects you could hardly see the hawks. Now everybody goes all runny inside at the mention of monarchs. These long-distance migrants have captured people’s imagination and about every other call to the Cape May Bird Observatory is about when they should be in Cape May to catch the monarch migration.

That’s easy: Plan your visit to coincide with the last cold front in September or, if there is none, the first cold front in October.

“I mean what are the dates?” they reply with no small measure of exasperation.

September 20 to October 10, I reply. But it may occur as early as September 15. Mother Nature doesn’t operate with train schedule precision (come to think of it, neither do the trains).

Block off some dates, be prepared to go at a moment’s notice, and then watch

the Weather Channel. Be prepared for the cold front to stall. They always do. But don’t worry if things don’t go precisely as planned.

In fall in Cape May, there is always something to see. Raptors, seabirds, songbirds, dragonflies...

Maybe your best strategy is to keep an open mind, visit as often as you can, and stop

LEADING the defense for the Lower Cape May Regional Lady Tigers’ soccer team, junior Sophie Crossley stepped up as the varsity sweeper for the 2013 season. Nervous about filling the shoes of now graduated Nicole Sangillo, Sophie said, “I just don’t want to let anyone down.”

Despite her vocal presence on the field, Sophie is a very down-toearth individual. She traveled to Alaska this past summer, camping out on the side of highways with other travelers. Sophie said she was able to forget about social media, a true challenge for most kids her age, and focus on becoming at peace with her surroundings.

Her parents, Richard and Debra of West Cape May, have encouraged Sophie in various pursuits, which is a major reason she has seen so much success both academically and athletically. With aspirations to become a captain for the soccer team next season, Sophie will continue to not only lead the defense, but also the rest of the team for the 2013 soccer season.
