Talk Of The Town GOINGS-ON AND GOSSIP IN AMERICA’S ORIGINAL SEASIDE RESORT

Tickets, Tickets, Everywhere...

We had heard stories that, during the Dragon Boat Festival the last weekend of September, so many parking tickets were issued that the streets looked as though they’d been “lined with little flags.” Participants and spectators questioned why police officers would target the harbor area during an event that not only raises money for charity (over $10,000) but brings so many people — and so much business — to Cape May during our shoulder season.

“I understand the cops were just doing their job,” one person, who opted to remain anonymous, told us. “But it’s kind of like giving out tickets at a funeral.

They could have looked the other way.”

This man received a $54 fine for not leaving 25 feet between his vehicle and the corner, although, he says, he’s not sure how the ticketing officer knew for certain, without a measuring tape, that this was the case. “I’ll say this much; it was very close,” he told us.

Others, including Doreen Talley, Outreach Officer for the Greater Cape May Chamber of Commerce, which put on the event, say the police weren’t issuing fines for the sake of it. “All of the violations we have heard of were blatant violations,” Doreen said. These include the blocking of fire hydrants and the parking of vehicles in clearly labeled, offlimits sections of the Coast Guard base.

S WE get ready for Cape May Film Festival we are encouraged by a slight uptick in short films being produced in the Garden State. There were a few years where we had to really beat the drum to get submissions, but this year they poured in. Unfortunately about half were not ready for our program, but the ones that remain are remarkable.

Our review committee consists of film lovers just like you, so if you have an inclination to want to help us select films next year, please let us know. We review films online separately and compare notes afterward. So while my tastes would have rejected a film or two that were accepted (or for that matter accepted a couple that were rejected), I could see the value of all reviewers’ comments.

That said, here some of my favorites that you should try to catch on Saturday, October 26, at the Chalfonte Hotel.

Mimespringa: What happens when a mime wants to take his life in another direction? Well apart from the obvious (um…

The life of a mime is explored in Mimespringa, showing at Cape May Film Festival. well… he actually talks), there are places this poor mime goes to find himself. In the end, he must find his way home. This film is very funny and sometimes uncomfortable.

The Organizer: She lives in her van on the streets, yet she helps people organize their lives in an upscale Manhattan neighborhood.

When her brother visits, he thinks she’s living in the apartment of one of her clients. That ruse falls apart soon enough and is replaced

by another surprise.

Manfred and the Waiting Room: Bizarre, funny and puzzling. In the end, you are left completely impressed by how the filmmaker has kept you in the dark just long enough. The “aha” moment in this film is unmistakable.

No Love Intended: Our own Young Filmmaker Ari Blau has been making a name for himself in New York and soon in L.A., and his latest short will be featured during our Late Night Shorts Program.

The “Sandy” Shorts: Many filmmakers have produced short documentaries about Hurricane Sandy, and we will feature three that we thought were among the best.

Granny’s Got Game: You will want to catch these 70-something women who are in a full-fledged basketball league—and making the grade! This film will be shown on Sunday.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

F

RIENDS, check your mailboxes next week: you will — along with your usual delivery of invitations to apply for 3,000 new credit cards, demands that you adopt a three-legged pit-bull, huge packages from Amazon that contain only a tiny bottle of nail polish amid 80 cubic feet of inflated packaging — see a neatly folded hessian sack. That sack, and identical ones that will arrive daily for the next month, are vital to this city’s very survival. For you, dear heart, have been mobilized using a little-known city law, into the Cape May Pioneer Corps, and you will be required to donate 30 minutes of your day to taking that sack to the beach, filling it with sand, tying the end securely and taking the sack home for safe-keeping until Spring.

Why? I hear you ask. Are we being invaded by Philly? Will we be fighting them on the beaches? Well, yes, I am certain that will happen some day, but not yet: this task is more important still.

This task is to preserve the very beach that has made us famous worldwide. Storms

will come, other towns will see their sand swept away, but not us, for our sand — every last grain of it — will be safe and secure, prized, tended and caressed by your own hands.

This will mean a slight change to the seafront: for a start, you will see a drop of around ten feet, and then shiny bedrock. Take care not to stumble over the edge. By my calculations you will also see some score of chests of Captain Kidd’s long lost buried treasure, the hulk of the Japanese battleship Yamato, a

pyramid marking the top of the fabled city of Atlantis and Henry Ford behind the wheel of his original Model T, where he has lain since a dispute over a game of Gin Rummy, in which he produced a pistol without first checking on the whereabouts of Young Albert: the law will not trouble us here, since we are some 16 generations of Alberts removed now, and the original dog is now just a revered memory.

Come spring, we will all return the carefully hoarded sand, and be aware that your precious cargo will be weighed and samples: anyone building a new porch or concrete driveway will be audited, down to the last grain. We will overnight go from a denuded rocky wasteland to the most pristine beach on the coast. We will also be taking the opportunity of placing under all that sand, a few dozen, um, problems that have been plaguing us.

Nominations for those problems will start in this very publication in a month: all we ask is that you abide by contest rules and do not nominate anything over a ton in weight or 10 feet long.

Here’s To Your Health

VERY day around 550 women are told they have breast cancer.

And each year 40,000 die from it.

Being diagnosed with cancer of any type tends to focus the mind.

The once important details of everyday life seem absurd and silly. Mine was skin cancer which started as a small red mark on my nose.

When I visited the dermatologist she said, “It’s cancer and you may lose the sight in your left eye.” What followed was the predictable cascade of emotions: fear, anxiety, terror. Being that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month it’s a good time to discuss options for preventing and treating cancer.

We know cancer is the modern scourge of our society. Is it due to manmade toxins, processed foods, stress, or genetics? Since you can find compelling studies pointing to or away from all of the above why not just assume that they all play a role and set up a line of defense.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to treating disease: Allopathic (traditional) and holistic or a more natural approach that uses herbs, supplements, and other nontraditional methods. These two don’t have to

be mutually exclusive and the medical community is slowly allowing that some non-traditional approaches have value, such as stress reduction and meditation. To be fair there are a lot of unsubstantiated claims about wholesale cures using exotic tonics and potions so everyone, especially the sick who can be desperate for an answer, need to be careful.

If a friend were diagnosed with cancer, breast cancer in particular, I would encourage a multi-pronged approach. Initial diagnosis, according to Dr. Joseph Mercola, often gives false positives. He recommends three to four opinions and to look for the experts in the field before choosing a treatment. He feels that

mammograms are a poor choice for diagnosing and that the bombardment of radiation, which is 1000 times that of a chest exam, to the potentially affected area is dangerous. The alternative is Thermography which “detects the formation of a direct supply of blood to cancer cells which is needed to form a tumor”.

There are no side-effects.

Taking vitamin D is vital. Even if you are a sun goddess all summer our winter sun is insufficient for producing vitamin D. And if you are avoiding the sun year-round, like me, you need to take large doses of it. Also, a plate of colorful vegetables every day will give you plenty of vitamin A which is another very important ally in preventing cancer.

Believe it or not, exercise cuts your chances of breast cancer in half! Whatever is stopping you from starting an exercise program today, given all the benefits, will look silly if you should get sick. Stop procrastinating.

Stay away from pesticides and herbicides, keep your estrogen levels low, and avoid unfermented soy products.

Most importantly, do your research and look at all of the available options.

HAVE read with fear an article describing one of the new candidates for the Borough of West Cape May election. I have a major concern with John Francis. The article stated that he walked across the country and when he got very angry about having to argue with people he decided to clam up and not speak for 16 years!

Is that what he will do if elected and sits on the Board of Commissioners in West Cape May and gets mad and tired of hearing people?

In a campaign article it says that the slate wants to be open.

Open? I just don’t perceive John Francis as being open. Is he all bottled up from not speaking for almost two decades? Will he get tired of hearing us and clam up again? I haven’t heard him speak yet. History speaks loud and clear.

I’m always leery of people who suddenly breeze in and want to take over. Where have any of the candidates been for the last four years? I’ve not seen any of them speak at a Borough Commissioners’ meeting. I’ve neither seen nor heard of any of the candidates speak publicly. I’ve not seen an article written by any of them. I’ve not heard any of them propose one good, innovative idea.

What have they done for the community? Have they advocated anything green for the borough, for instance? Have they stated publicly in the past that they are concerned with the quiet, naturebased ambience of the community?

Do they embrace the idea of smart growth? Have any of them volunteered for any of the numerous borough committees? Are they passionate about the farms and open space that define the borough?

What specifically have they planned for the betterment of the community?

I would like to see them in an open forum. Let’s have a look at them. Let’s look them in the eyes. I would like to ask them questions directly. Let them come forward. Let them speak. Let’s see how they perform before we elect them to govern our lives.

I advocate being very careful.

This week: A fascinating lecture on Lincoln. By Catherine Dugan.

EARN more about Abraham Lincoln at “Lessons from Lincoln: The Poetry and Prose of Freedom,” a lecture by Harold Holzer, this Sunday, October 13, at 4pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, 500 Hughes Street. Tickets are $30, or $50 including the optional reception at the Queen Victoria Inn, next door.

It seems fitting that the reception for a Lincoln scholar be held at an inn named for Queen Victoria. The railsplitting Kentucky farm boy and the isolated European princess might have been kindred spirits, had they ever met. Though Lincoln had little formal schooling, he seems to have read whatever he could get his hands on. The young Victoria also read widely, adding texts on business and technology to the works on poetry, history and geography expected of a princess. Lincoln admired the use of science to create “new and useful things” for young America, which only an “Old Fogy” would reject. Queen Victoria was an early adopter of technology — she traveled by train in 1842, and pronounced herself “quite charmed” by the modern transport, and

used the new technique of anesthesia for the births of her eighth and ninth children. Both leaders lost loved ones to typhoid fever — Lincoln, his son Willie, and Victoria, her husband Albert. Both saw their loved ones suffer from disorders whose causes were a mystery at the time — Lincoln and his children likely suffered from Marfan syndrome, and the Queen’s son was a hemophiliac. Lincoln survived at least one assassination attempt before he was

Speaker Harold Holzer is one of the country’s leading authorities on Lincoln and the political culture of the Civil War era. He served as historical consultant to Steven Spielberg in the making of the film Lincoln and is the author, co-author, or editor of 43 books on Lincoln and the Civil War era. He is also the Senior Vice President for Public Affairs at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Though most Americans know the basics of Lincoln’s life, Holzer’s lecture promises to focus on the language of Lincoln in the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address. This is the second lecture in the annual Lessons of History Distinguished Lecture Series presented by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities. HESE are the days of madness in Cape May. Autumn migration is fully upon us. Raptors are rampant. Warblers wherever your binoculars fall. An admirer of nature can hardly decide where to go to savor the most WOW. Hint: try the Hawk Watch Platform at Cape May Point State Park. Get the latest reconnaissance from local experts while sitting under one of North America’s greatest hawk migrations. The seasonal interpretive naturalists can give you a calendar of naturerelated events — so you’ll know where to go tomorrow, too.

The folks at Cape May Bird Observatory have had 40 years to figure out where visitors should be to get the most out of their Cape May experience. And there are very few places on earth that pack so much natural wonder in one small geographic package.

Tens of millions of eco-tourists would surrender all their frequent flyer miles to be standing where you are right now at the height of fall migration. Get thee to the Hawk

Watch Platform and start stockpiling natural spectacles. Spotting scope views of perched Merlins. Eagles cavorting overhead. Yesterday three Bald Eagles were in view at once and with eagle numbers at an all-time high, encounters like this are almost daily.

But maybe Monarch butterflies are more to your liking. The stand of cedars beside the Hawk Watch Platform are a traditional roost for these big showy orange insects. With wings folded they look like dead leaves; but

with the touch of morning sunlight, the trees burst forth with animated orange blossoms.

Seeing a Monarch roost come to life will constitute one of your greatest wildlife encounters. For best results time your visit for the morning after winds have gone to the northwest and temperatures have fallen.

If all you want is good conversation, the Hawk Watch Platform, as the intellectual hub for visiting and resident authors, rarely disappoints. But please don’t bother the Official Hawk Counter. He is there to insure that no high-flying eagles slip past.

The Hawk Watch is packed with garrulous hawk watchers. Only the counters tend to be taciturn. So go chat up the regulars. Traditional opening remarks include: “What’s the flight like today?” “What was yesterday’s count?” And, make sure you ask the Interpretive Naturalists on duty if you can take a look through their Swarovski binoculars or spotting scope.
