Talk Of The Town GOINGS-ON AND GOSSIP IN AMERICA’S ORIGINAL SEASIDE RESORT

A Must-Read Hits Shelves In April, we told you about local Carol Fragale Brill, who had just self-published, despite offers of representation, a novel called Peace By Piece. Now, Carol’s second project, another fictional book 10 years in the making entitled Cape Maybe, is also available for purchase.

The story is worthy of a read not just for its themes (addiction, evolving family dynamics, the possibility of creating our own second chances), and not just for the author’s credentials (Carol’s work has been recognized by Poets and Writers and Philadelphia Stories), but for its setting: right here in Cape May. “I moved here 16 years ago, fulfilling a lifelong dream,” said Carol, whose day job is that of a leadership coach for Cumberland County’s Inspira Health Network. “I just love Cape May. I think this is such a unique place, and not just for the Victorian part of town and its history, but because this is a beach town, with a rural, farming area right next to it, and that just fascinates me. I wouldn’t say the area is so prominent that it becomes another character in the book, which happens sometimes, but you do get a feel for how charming and special this place really is.”

While Carol was tight-lipped about her plot — “To tell you what happens would potentially ruin the story,” she said — she did give us this much: the character of a young girl moves away from her alcoholic mother to live with her grandfather in West Cape May, vowing never to become anything like her mom, a goal that proves more difficult than she imagined.

for the book with the photograph of the Cove on the cover. “It’s my favorite beach in the whole world,” Carol said. “It has special significance to me, and hopefully other people will be attracted to it, too.”

A New Type Of Fundraiser You’d be hard-pressed to find a woman among us who didn’t flip her hair in the pool or ocean as a little girl, channeling her inner mermaid. Part of our fascination with these creatures, says Sue Lotozo, owner of Flying Fish Studio on Park Boulevard, is that we live in a seashore town, so it’s practically a prerequisite, like eating crab or watching sunsets. And part of our fascination is the mermaid’s “magical, mystical” quality. “People want to know: are they real?

Are they not?” says Sue. “The mermaid is an age-old, iconic image.”

So it’s not surprising, then, that the mermaid became, four years ago, the namesake of The Mermaid Guild, a group of women who run businesses in

Cape May and “get together for mutual marketing and fundraising,” says Sue. “We can do more in a group than we can on our own.”

In 2009, the Mermaids began hosting the wildly successful King Neptune Bachelor Auction, which raised money — sometimes over $20,000 in one evening — for the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch. But this year, the group has decided on a different type of fundraiser, one with “potential for larger community involvement,” Sue says. “Change is good.”

From October 29 through November 3, SOMA NewArt Gallery in the Carpenter Square Mall will display works of art depicting the mermaid and merman interpretations of 50 local artists as part of a silent auction. The mediums vary wildly; Sue told us about mermaids born from paint, seashells, repurposed refuse found on the beach, driftwood, even beads. We’re not surprised by the

That’s the way I see it.”

Claire Just Keeps On Running On Claire Kwasnieski Reeves’ 28th birthday, she felt terrible. She’d quit her 15-year smoking habit six months before, and she’d been filling the void with food. “I hated myself,” she told us. So when Claire saw an article in Mother Earth magazine about jogging to get in shape, she decided to give it a shot. “I couldn’t even run around the

house,” she said. But, with her faithful dog by her side, she stuck with it.

Now, with her 52nd birthday approaching, Claire has logged more than 70,000 miles around the island, completed four marathons (the fastest one in four hours and 15 minutes), and caught the attention of former high-school peer Henrie Washington, who produced, wrote, and directed an eight-minute documentary called Run, Claire, Run: A Cape May Legend, to be shown during the Cape May Film Festival at the Chalfonte this weekend.

Of course, most people won’t be surprised to hear that Claire runs a great

deal — 10 miles four times a week, specifically — because most of us have, at some point, seen her out there pounding the pavement. “I work at the Hair Cuttery in North Cape May,” she told us, “and people will come in and say, ‘Isn’t that the lady who runs?’ And the other day in The Pilot House, someone said, ‘I passed you three times this morning while you were running: by the bayfront, while I was driving over one bridge and then, later, while I was driving over the other bridge.’”

What is surprising is how things have changed over the course of Claire’s journey, as she calls it. “When I first started, they didn’t even make running shoes for women,” she said. And the reasons why she keeps at it. “You notice everything when you run that you wouldn’t notice in a car,” she said. “I’ve watched the Cove beach come and go, I’ve watched houses go up, and I watched the progress of the Christian Admiral demolition, every day.”

Then there’s Claire’s personal experiences with hundreds of local races. “I ran the first Ocean Drive Marathon,” she

Farewell, Bob We were so sorry to hear about the passing of 66-year-old Bob Hural (better known as Bob Cheeks) who, along with wife Chris Hey, operated the clothing store, Cheeks Cape May. Bob suffered a heart attack on October 11, but we’re glad to report the store he was so passionate about will live on. “Definitely, yes,” Chris told us. “Cheeks was both of our babies.”

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Chris, and the rest of Bob’s family and friends, who knew him as a deeply compassionate man whose love for the beach was second only to his love for the people in his life. “He was liquid mad,” Chris said.

“I have a picture of him coming out of the ocean in Rincon, Puerto Rico, looking at me, and he looks like the happiest man in the world.”

Rest in peace, Bob. Calling Computer Nerds (And Computer Nerd Wannabes) On October 22, Cape May City Elementary School began offering adult computer classes, but it’s not too late! The continuing education program offers a five-week class and a four-week class this fall that meet every Tuesday in the school lab from 3:15-4:45pm. The cost is free and open to adults 18 years and older. Session one is a beginner/refresher course geared for the novice, and session two will focus on managing digital photos.

T DOESN’T get more local than this!

Cape May Film Festival has always prided itself on bringing you New Jersey’s freshest new filmmakers — or films that have never been screened in the Garden State (and sometimes the world.

This Saturday, October 26, at 4:15, the festival presents a special session entitled Cape May/ Sandy Shorts.

The films in these session are in all filmed in the great Garden State. The films focus on Hurricane Sandy’s impact on New Jersey and the impact of some unsung heroes right here in Cape May. Here are the films: Fury’s Wrath: A short documentary detailing the three major storms that caused devastation on the east coast beginning with Hurricane Irene, the freak October snowstorm of 2011, and Superstorm Sandy. The story is told from the point of view of the mayor of a North Jersey town, Woodland Park, how the dilemma was dealt with and the hope and resilience of New Jersey as a people and a state.

SeaBright Rising: Focuses on the incredible

One of the local films at the festival devastation that super storm Sandy inflicted on the barrier island town of Sea Bright, and the comparable force that emerged from its inhabitants so quickly as they dug out, dug in and began to get Sea Bright rising!

Fix 1806 combines news footage and original footage to follow the story of one family’s struggle to clean out and rebuild their home after Sandy. The film documents and celebrates the volunteers who came from near and far to help support the Osmond family.

Run, Claire, Run: A Cape May Legend: Henrie Washington takes us back to 1978, when Claire Kwasnieski Reeves of Cape May, made a decision to begin running 10 miles a day, four days a week. She has since logged more than 70,000 miles.

Ali Casablanca: Cape May musician and filmmaker Gordon Vincent’s interpretation of home, featuring his song and, of course, Ali Casablanca!

Cape May County History, Part 3: Third in a series of short films about the history of Cape May County from after the Revolutionary War to pre-Civil War. There was the War of 1812, the development of a new nation, and all the while the County thrived on some familiar trades (farming, salt works) and some new ones (including ship building). Developed by historian J.P. Hand.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

AM done with this modern “cellulite telephone” business. At first I was thrilled that a communication device could be small enough to fit in my breeches pocket, and tickled in every sense that the thing would vibrate in sensual manner whenever someone called me.

I was sent a dozen of the things when they were first invented, from the same gaunt, intense baldy fellow wearing a black turtleneck sweater who had come to the door many years before seeking investment in a dubious business that seemed to involve every one having a sleek computing device in their home. I was about to set Young Albert on him when I noticed that his logo was that of a half-eaten fruit, and I was amused enough to given him 100 guineas to send him on his way.

Anyway, I made sure my staff each had one of these cellulite devices, and had one strapped to Albert’s collar and turned on permanently, so the little fellow could “talk” to me whenever he wished. I tell you, it was a modern marvel to be seated on the porch

enjoying my morning Dark and Stormy and be able to hear his furious growling when he had treed a wandering Shoebie, his manic barking as he chased seagulls down the beach, and his strained but satisfied grunting when he did his daily poop on the doorstep of whatever local establishment had offended me that week.

But lately I have noticed that people are losing the art of genteel communication.

Nephews and neices of mine have started sending what appear for all the world to be

tiny cartoonish faces instead of calling to express gratitude for my stream of instructions, advice and useful gifts to their various abodes around the world. A yellow smiling face is hardly the way to respond to a 2,000word letter listing a callow youth’s failings.

Nor is a colon and the opening half of a parenthesis a sensible reaction to the news that Young Albert and I will be dropping by for tea next Wednesday. I have received such symbols as a raised mug of some beverage, a foolish conical party hat and a creepy animated winking face, and like them not.

If I was able to manufacture and send one of those little moving icons that showed a raised and cane being brought down repeatedly and with force, I would send it widely, I can assure you.

But in the meantime I am returning those awful little telephones to that baldy fellow (I believe his name was Jobs) along with documents claiming to be proof that I own 40 per cent of his company and I will advise him to invest in fine writing paper and fountain pens.

Here’s To Your Health

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

STHMA is sometimes deadly and often terrifying, particularly terrifying for parents watching their child gasping for breath and not being able to do much about it should all of the standard medical approaches fail.

I have a friend who has episodic coughing fits and has been sucking on his inhaler for decades just to get enough relief to be able to function normally. Inhalers come in two types: Non-steroidal and ones with steroids.

Non-steroidals generally use stimulants and can cause anxiety. They can be addictive and once they wear off the constriction returns, requiring repeated use. The nasal sprays act in much the same way with the user becoming dependent.

According to Dr Andrew Weil, you should only use the ones that are not absorbed into your system. “Different products vary greatly in efficacy and absorbability. At this writing the best are Flovent and Pulmocort, both safer than older versions. Steroid inhalers should always be used immediately following inhalation of a bronchodilator,” he writes.

But he sees the long-term use of these as problematic and especially warns against the use of oral steroids like Prednisone due to its highly addictive nature.

So what causes the inflammation in some people but not in others? That isn’t known just yet. There are triggers, though, to be aware of and dietary recommendations.

Triggers include smoking and second-hand smoke, colds and flu, allergies, exercise, temperature changes, aspirin and beta-blockers, stress, acid reflux and pollution.

Exercise-induced asthma is so common that one sports trainer from a local private high school remarked that what used to be

a few kids per year has become two to three sufferers on every team across all sports.

Duke did a study on something called the “hygiene hypothesis” which tries to account for the epidemic of allergies and asthma.

It posits that the dirtier the environment the less likely the kids are to get asthma as opposed to the kids raised in a pristine, manicured lawn, astro-turfed environment. The dirtier kids, if you will, are exposed to more germs and build immunities. They compared the anti-bodies in the blood of lab rats and mice which grow in a germ-free environment with their wild cousins and found that the wild critters had higher levels of specific antibodies associated with immune and allergic diseases which more efficiently and effectively attacked invading organisms.

Dr Joseph Mercola recommends getting plenty of omega 3s and thinks we should get just enough sun to turn the skin pink but no more. This should have your body produce more than enough Vitamin D. Finally, if you drink milk, consider unpasteurized milk. Pasteurized milk can be highly allergic to many humans.

N LAST week’s issue, West Cape May resident Jim Lambrusciano questioned whether there is a clear commitment on my part to the Borough of West Cape May — both in the past years that I have served as an elected official and with my decision to continue to serve, if I am privileged enough to be re-elected.

Jim even stated in the letter that I had the “audacity” to speak to a private citizen about whether I would continue to serve.

When Jim ran as a candidate in 2009 he tried to get people to question the integrity and commitment of our team, and once again he has spouted off without pursuing the facts. If he had taken a moment to ask me, as a concerned citizen, I could have told him that my father had serious health issues and that his primary care caregiver, my 80+ year-old mother, had her hands full with this responsibility. Any conversations that I might have had concerning running again, whether I felt comfortable sharing the specifics or not, would have come from my concern about not knowing how much I would be needed to assist my parents moving forward.

When considering whether I would run for re-election I wanted to be sure that I would be able to continue to give the time and energy needed while serving the residents, property owners and my neighbors in West Cape May. When my father passed and I needed to give extra time and care to my mom while she got back on her feet, I only missed one borough meeting in the last four years, and that was to help with the preparations leading up to my father’s funeral. Seeing that my mom has steadily acclimated to her new circumstances, I can be as fully committed to my responsibilities as one of the elected representatives in the Borough of West Cape May as I have always been.

The Albert Stevens Inn owner supposes much, including that because I received the most votes in 2009 that I should have accepted — no, demanded — the position of mayor. Well Jim, within the form of government that the borough has long been governed under, that is not how the choice of mayor is determined.

And so, I encourage anyone who has concerns in the next four years to please come to us. We are here for you, willing to listen and give you the whole story. I thank you for giving me the chance to bring clarity to this issue and encourage all of you to vote on November 5.

This week: A fascinating lecture on Lincoln. By Catherine Dugan.

EARN more about the Garden State’s homegrown monster, the Jersey Devil, at the Nature Center’s Harborside Chat on October 31. The Jersey Devil is our answer to Bigfoot, Mothman or Chupacabra — a mysterious creature who dwells in nature, hidden from mankind. According to one version of the legend, Mrs Leeds, an early 17th century resident of the Pine Barrens who was already blessed with a drunken husband and twelve children, was none too happy to find herself expecting the thirteenth. She reportedly declared, “Let this one be a devil!”

Months later, when her labor began, the curse had been forgotten. A beautiful boy was born. As the midwife watched, the infant was transformed into a monster with bright red eyes, wings, talons and horns. The monster killed his mother, his father, and 11 of his siblings, leaving one, and the midwife, to tell the tale. The Jersey Devil has been blamed for all kinds of misfortune over the years, including slain cattle and mysterious illnesses. Sightings have been reported throughout South Jersey. In 1909, mys-

That same week, a creature threatened passengers on a trolley and was driven off by a firehose. Schools and mills closed because people refused to travel through the woods to get to work.

There’s a lot of disagreement about the Jersey Devil, including an assertion that he’s been around far longer than three centuries.

Before European settlers arrived, the Lenni Lenape reportedly believed that a monster lived in the Pine Barrens. Skeptics assert that the legend is based on the sandhill crane, a large bird with red markings on its forehead.

And, I’d like to point out that my Uncle Joe, who is also a thirteenth child, is a lovely man who shows no signs of wings or talons.
