Talk Of The Town GOINGS-ON AND GOSSIP IN AMERICA’S ORIGINAL SEASIDE RESORT

The Jazz Festival Is Coming!

We are excited about Dianne Reeves headlining at the Exit 0 International Jazz Festival on November 8, the Friday that kicks off a weekend of world-class music in Cape May. Reeves is a Grammy -winning jazz vocalist and a veteran performer of Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center who has sung on tours with the likes of Harry Belafonte and on the soundtrack of George Clooney’s Good Night, and Good Luck movie, so as for anticipation levels being high… no surprise there. But for some locals, it’s the return of an old favorite, the Pacific Orchestra, that will be one of the festival’s main event.

Patricia Jackson of Patricia Jackson Jewelers emailed us to say what a great amount of buzz is going on in town about the band’s appearance, so we called lead singer/guitarist David “Kahn” Johnson to get the skinny on his group.

Turns out, when they got their start in Key West in the mid-70s, Patricia Jackson was one of several Cape May locals finding some off-season respite in Florida, and discovering the Caribbean dance music of Pacific Orchestra. So when Pete Vernon, then-manager of Kahn’s Ugly Mug (now The Ugly Mug), recruited them to play his bar in 1977, the boys already had a local following. Gigs at Gloria’s (now Cabanas) soon followed.

“We played there one whole summer, six or seven times a week,” David said.

By this time, Pacific Orchestra was touring up and down the east coast, but Cape May always stood out as a favorite stopping point. “Cape May is like Key West; these towns have personalities,” David said. “Cape May has a little more culture than your average Jersey shore town. town, an openness and a tolerance and a vibrancy. These things really allowed us to be successful. We weren’t playing top 40 songs; we were doing something a little left of center, and the people not only allowed us to do it, but appreciated it.”

Until the late 80s, the Pacific Orchestra members “did nothing but play.” Now, each is either still a full-time musician, or keeping up with music while pursuing various activities (David just finished his second book, a novel called Green Island) all across the country. David lives in Chicago; drummer Richie Ciavlino went back to his roots in Key West; drummer George “Conga” Terzis is based in Boston; flute and sax player John Gladstone is in DC; and lead guitar player Joe Grassi, originally from Cape May where he was well-known for his skateboarding and surfing prowess, is now in Philadelphia.

“This is not just a musical reunion,” David said. “These people through the years have become a family. And we are

unbelievably excited to return to Cape May. It’s a special place for us.”

The Pacific Orchestra will play at The Exit Zero magazine stage (that’s us!) at Cabanas on Friday, November 8 at 9:30pm and 11pm. See you there.

Farewell, Nick We were given another reminder of how fleeting life can be when Nick Nezaj died in a car crash last Friday at the age of 42.

Nick owned the Ocean Club Hotel, the Hotel Alcott, the West Cape Motel, and he is remembered by those who knew him — and those who simply admired him from afar — as a brilliant businessman.

“It was amazing how he could juggle so many balls at one time,” said Ocean Club manager Neil Berger. “He was always on top of all of them, and he could make things happen so quickly.

construction; he’d stripped it to the concrete. The floors were dirt. I said, ‘You’re kidding me; you’re planning on opening this season?’” But Nick made it happen; the hotel opened three months later.

Friend Bill Bezaire, co-owner of realtor Coldwell Banker, told us, “It’s a great loss to the city. He was young, energetic and forward-thinking, and he cared about Cape May. He was successful, but quietly so. He was never boastful or bragging.”

Catherine Walton of Weddings by the Sea says Nick did much work to build the wedding business in Cape May from the ground up. “We met 16 years ago,” she said. “I walked into the Hotel Alcott, which was under construction — he took that place from literally a flop house to what it is today — and I asked who was in charge. They directed me toward Nick. We clicked right away — he talked fast; he talked New York, and I understood. I think that’s one of the reasons we got along so well. And when it came to weddings, Nick was so dedicated to making couples and their

families feel so welcome. He was an amazing man.”

But even more than his business smarts, Nick will be remembered for the love he had for his family, including his wife Aferdita and 10-year-old daughter Victoria. Everyone we spoke with told us that Nick, no matter how devoted to work, lived for his family. “He was the most amazing person in the world, and I have not a single bit of hesitation in saying that,” said Nick’s cousin, partner at the Ocean Club, and the restaurant’s executive chef Lou Rexhepi. “He was the funniest, most caring person I’ve ever met.”

Ramblings From The Editor

A few thoughts about the West Cape May election and Willow Creek Winery Elections are won by men and women chiefly because most people vote against somebody rather than for somebody. — Franklin Adams

EMOCRACY is easy to love.

Elections? Not so much. Those crappy vinyl lawn signs, the cacophony of the claim and the counter-claim, the skewing of facts and stats, the guff that goes viral on Facebook…

In case you haven’t noticed, West Cape May is embroiled in an election campaign. And if you haven’t noticed, you need to pay more attention, since Exit Zero has run more letters to the editor in the last three issues than it has in the last three years, along with 12 pages of ads in the last three weeks (okay, there’s ONE good thing about political campaigns — by law, ads have to be paid full rate AND in advance).

I wouldn’t call the West Cape May campaign an out-and-out mud-slinger, but there’s been enough bad karma to taint the vibe of this otherwise charming little city by the sea.

If you’re a West Cape May voter, maybe

you’ve already made up your mind. But as someone who owns a business in West Cape May and who comes within half a street of living in the borough (Stimpson Lane marks the border between West Cape May and Lower Township), I’d like you to hear me out because I’ve done my best to hear all sides of this story and, well, maybe you haven’t had that chance...

First of all, let’s meet the candidates...

There are six of them altogether, divided into two tickets — three challengers against

three incumbents. In the incumbent corner (I’m saying this in my best wrestling announcer voice) is Mayor Pam Kaithern, who has been a West Cape May Commissioner since 2001, and mayor since 2005; Peter Burke, who has been a Commissioner since 2005; and Carol Sabo, who became a Commissioner nearly a year ago, after the resignation of Ramsay Geyer.

In the challenger corner is John Francis, who spent his childhood summers in West Cape May and who is best known for walking across America and not saying a single word for 17 years (and wrote a book about it); David Wilburn, a fisherman with the Lobster House fleet; and Stephanie La Torre, who runs a flooring and design business.

The incumbents believe that the current administration rules by fear. “We’ve spoken to people on the street and they’re scared to say they’re opposed to the administration because they’re afraid they will be targeted,” said Francis.

What else? The current administration is entirely to blame for the watergate crisis... that battle they’re having with Cape May over

As for the incumbents... they believe that their challengers have little local knowledge, know nothing about the workings of municipal government, are avoiding public debate, and have shown little desire to get involved with community affairs until very recently.

Simple, right?

No, not really.

Thing is, there’s this place called Willow Creek Winery, a beautiful, Gone With the Windstyle mansion and vineyard, situated a couple hundred yards from the home of Mayor Kaithern, which has inserted itself (by way of a very vigorous campaign on their Facebook page) as a major issue in this election, even though both campaigns say it is NOT a major issue.

You’re going to have to wait a few pages before I get into the Willow Creek controversy — there’s too much detail to insert in here. But let’s just say that the winery is VERY supportive of the challengers, and VERY keen to see Mayor Kaithern’s team voted out of office.

Because the challengers refused to take part in a debate that would have been overseen by the League of Women Voters (who have

performed a similar duty at recent candidates’ debates in Cape May), I arranged a meeting with them at my office, to get an idea of who they are and what they stand for.

First of all, I wanted to know if they were running on behalf of Willow Creek Winery, since that was the word on the street — or, at least, the streets I walk on.

“I wouldn’t say we are in favor of Willow Creek,” said John Francis. “This is a matter for the state and the county to decide upon. And we will agree with that decision.”

La Torre eagerly added her agreement, and Wilburn went one step further, saying, “If someone thinks I am in Willow Creek’s pocket, then let them come to me face to face and tell me that, and I will set them straight.” Wilburn later added, “I don’t even drink!”

I asked the challengers if they had read the deed of easement that Willow Creek owner Barbara Wilde signed in 2003 (which is at the root of the controversy), but none of them had.

When I explained the viewpoint of the county and state, Francis said, “It seems as though that they are in violation, but I don’t know all the particulars. It’s up to the state or the county to say.”

La Torre confirmed that Willow Creek had donated to their campaign — “just as all of our neighbors did.”

When I asked the candidates if they would have run in this election if Willow Creek hadn’t been such an issue, they laughed. “Of course!” said Francis. “For me, it’s not the big issue. I’m more interested in taking care of our water and making our town a fairer place to live. People are afraid to speak out, and that’s wrong.”

Francis said he was asked to run by a childhood friend of his, Dwight Coleman. “He suggested I stand for commissioner. I said I didn’t want to but he said I should walk around and talk to people, and that’s what I did. And I decided I would stand.”

Wilburn said he was running because, “I’ve seen people treated wrongly. People need stuff that they are afraid to ask for.”

I asked him what that was, and he said, “More knowledge of what is going on and not having to read it in the newspaper.”

And how would you do that, I asked.

“Go out there and tell them,” said Wilburn.

“I’ve lived here for 12 years and I’ve never had a Commissioner come visit my house.”

LaTorre said that the people could be regularly informed via “social media and more emailing.”

I asked the candidates why neither of them had ever volunteered for any borough committees or worked at any of the many festivals in town.

Ramblings From The Editor ? From Page 24 “I didn’t know that was available to me,” said La Torre, “but now that I am aware of it, even if I don’t get elected, I intend to get fully involved in this community.”

I also asked the candidates why they had only been to so few commission meetings in the last year — Francis has attended four, LaT orre three, and Wilburn one.

Wilburn said he “didn’t like the way the commission meetings were held. People get up to speak and they’re treated rudely.

It’s wrong.”

His running mates agreed and said they wanted to change the way West Cape May did business.

“I have a PhD in environmental studies, I’ve walked across the country and listened to people with very different ideas in very different communities,” said Francis. “And I’ve been able to relate to all of them. How we treat each other is as important as how we treat the environment.

“I knocked on a lot of doors and there is a part of our community that feels ostracized and afraid of reprisals; of not getting permits. And that hurt me. I’d like to bring fairness and transparency to our government.”

I also asked the candidates about the negative leaflets that had been mailed to residents, attacking the administration, in the name of a group called West Cape May Pride.

The challengers said they had nothing to do with that campaign and condemned the tone of it.

The man behind those leaflets is John Rowley, who lives in the borough. He supports the challengers and is vehemently opposed to Mayor Kaithern’s campaign. When I asked Rowley who else was involved with West Cape May Pride (which Mayor Kaithern began using as a tagline in the last election four years ago), he refused to say.

“I’m a private citizen and I don’t have to answer that question,” said an angry Rowley, before

hanging up.

I spoke to Mayor Kaithern and asked her about the perception that she’s a bully and dominates the Commission.

“One of my responsibilities in insurance, which overlaps with public safety, for instance. I also run the finance committee, which overlaps with everything.

And remember, we don’t have a full-time city administrator like Cape May does. Yes, of course, I’m heavily involved with the day-today running of this borough, but I don’t see why that is an issue.”

As for making enemies, she said, “I’ve been a commissioner for 12 years. Sometimes tough decisions have to be made. If I had managed to keep everyone happy, then I would not be doing my job.”

As for her challengers, she said, “I’m glad they want to be involved with this community.

They don’t have the experience to govern yet. I don’t think any of them have even been to a planning committee meeting. They should volunteer, be a part of committees.

Taking office is a daunting task.

There is so much to learn.”

My two cents? I’ve been part of a mayor’s advisory committee in West Cape May for the past few months and have been impressed

by Kaithern’s ability and willingness to listen; by her knowledge and experience; and above all by her dedication to the borough. The woman works her butt off for West Cape May. I think it’s important for the city to keep an experienced leader in office, but change is not a bad thing. Just because voters are being offered two tickets doesn’t mean they have to vote that way.

I think that candidate Wilburn doesn’t show much of a stomach for municipal government — sometimes meetings get nasty. It happens. I believe he’s a great neighbor and a good guy, but that doesn’t mean he would make an effective Commissioner.

And LaTorre’s point that she didn’t know about volunteering suggests a political naivety.

As for Francis, I think he could be a breath of fresh air on the

on the knuckles from Cape May County Open Space and Farmland Preservation director, Barbara Ernst, who wrote to Wilde in January 2006, reminding her that “the wedding services as advertised are clearly in violation of this easement... Please cease all future advertising of such service on the restricted farm.”

Wilde ran into controversy again in 2010 when Willow Creek hosted a Renaissance Festival. Once again the county reminded her that this would be in violation of the deed she signed in 2003. At the time, Wilde’s lawyer, Marcus Karavan, argued with the county that, “The proposed Renaissance Fair is not a wedding, corporate event or catered event and, as such, does not, in my opinion, fall within the purview of the 2005 State Agricultural Development Committee ruling.”

In other words he accepted that weddings were not permitted by the state — and yet Willow Creek went on to host them in a 12,6000-square-foot “tasting room” opened last year. But they don’t officially call them weddings — they call them wine-tastings.

Although the county and state had made it clear from 2006 that weddings, festivals and other non-agricultural events, were not allowed at Willow Creek, Wilde vigorously promoted the winery as a major events venue in an application she made to the federal gov-

mission. He’s a worldy man with interesting ideas.

Whatever you do, go out and vote on November 5.

The Battle Of Willow Creek IT’S A good name for a movie, right? And, for sure, it’s a story with a few layers of drama.

Here’s the short-ish version. In 2003, Barbara Wilde, the owner of Willow Creek, signed a deed with Cape May County that awarded her $890,000 of taxpayers’ money. In return, Wilde accepted significant restrictions on what she could do with that land. Specifically, it had to be preserved as farmland, and could not be used for non-agricultural purposes.

Those same restrictions were challenged by the Laurita Winery in Ocean County, NJ in 2005. The winery, which had taken close to one million dollars of public money to preserve farmland, wanted to host weddings, but the State Agricultural Development Committee made it clear that weddings, festivals and the like were not permitted, under the terms of the deed the winery signed.

ernment’s SBA program for a $1.2 million loan, which she received in 2011.

In the business plan she sent to the SBA in support of her application, Wilde said that Willow Creek offered a “huge event area with plenty of dance floors, bars and, importantly, bathrooms” and that the room would “easily hold 700 event goers.” She envisaged hosting 40 events a year, with 250 people per event.

No matter which way you slice it, Willow Creek was planning a major event space, at the same time as the county and state were making it clear that the winery wasn’t allowed to host such events, per the conditions of the deed Wilde signed in 2003.

It’s not the first time Wilde has challenged the law. In 2005 she lost an appeal to the Superior Court of New Jersey over her property in Cape May, the Southern Mansion.

In 1994, Wilde applied to Cape May’s Planning Board for approval to redevelop a dilapidated building on Washington Street and turn it into a guest house. She later received approval, and that building became the Southern Mansion. During that Planning Board meeting, however, some members expressed concern that Wilde’s development was really a hotel, which is not permitted in that part of town.

Shortly after receiving approval, Wilde applied for a revision of her plan — she wanted to instal a commercial kitchen in the guest house. Her lawyer said at the time, “There seemed to be a question whether we had a hidden agenda to create a restaurant... and that’s not our intention.”

Wilde got the approval but in 2002, argued that they SHOULD be able to open a restaurant because although the Southern Mansion had been approved as a guest house, it WAS actually a hotel because it could accommodate more than 20 guests. She lost her appeal and in their written judgement the Superior Court called her version “revisionist history.”

Wilde referenced her battle to open a restaurant in her SBA loan application, writing that “we have been continually stymied by political backstabbing that has undermined our ability to get a restaurant license.” She added, “We have focused on the political process to turn the tides to where we have adequate county support to get a restaurant license.”

By “adequate county support” I’m guessing that Wilde is alluding to the fact that she’s in

a relationship with Marcus Karavan, her lawyer, who is close to Michael Donohue, chairman of Cape May County Republican Party, which has controlled this county for decades.

This is likely all sounding like a lot of Willow Creek (and Southern Mansion) bashing.

But the point I’m trying to make is that Wilde seems predisposed to either finding loopholes in, or simply ignoring, municipal laws.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of both of her properties. I think they’re magnificent additions to this island’s tourism infrastructure.

I would love to see the Southern Mansion operate a restaurant. It’s odd to me that it isn’t zoned for such use — it has the space and it has the parking. But Wilde knew fine well that the building wasn’t zoned for use as a hotel and a restaurant when she sought her approvals.

As for Willow Creek, I hope that it thrives.

Wilde has a passionate and energetic team working for her, led by Kevin Celli, and has put together a place that’s just magical.

Full disclosure — together, the Southern Mansion and Willow Creek Winery are Exit Zero Publishing’s second-biggest advertiser, behind Cape Resorts, which is run by Curtis Bashaw, one of the most dogged opponents of Willow Creek’s wedding and event plans.

Bashaw owns Beach Plum Farm, which neighbors Willow Creek, and he had planned to build

a home on his farm until he learned of Wilde’s plans for hosting major events.

Because of Bashaw’s involvement, some people regard this controversy as a disagreement between two successful business folks, but that trivializes what is at stake here. What if Wilde gets her way, and DOES run at least 40 major events every year? And what if Bashaw then decided to go down the same path and open up Beach Plum Farm as a beautifully located events center?

And what if Les and Diane Rea, who own nearby Rea’s Farm, decided they, too, would cash in? That special part of town could become a convention center strip mall. That’s what happens when you don’t hold the line.

If Wilde had NOT signed that deed and taken $890,000 of taxpayers’ money then she would have been free to at least chase her dream of establishing a winery and events center, without the restrictions imposed by the county and state. She would have been fighting a pure fight — that of the entrepreneur trying to make a living. Instead, she chose to take public money while also plowing ahead with ambitious plans that were certain to conflict with the terms of the windfall she received.

I try to avoid cliches but I cannot think of a better phrase than this — you can’t have your cake and eat it, Barbara.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

DETEST leaf blowers. Or rather I detest the people who use them. One of the chief delights of fall is watching the golden leaves break free and spiral gently to the ground, to form orange drifts and swirling red puddles for children to gambol in, adults to shuffle contentedly through and for dogs to carefully defecate under then cover the evidence to leave a horrific booby trap for the unwary.

When I was a lad, Ma D’Catur would offer a sixpence to whoever of her 15 offspring could collect the most leaves, using only sugar tongs and our clothing. As a further incentive the child who collected the fewest would be thrown to the squirrels.

So, for a frantic hour, we would all scurry around the yard while Ma sat on her rocking chair on the porch nodding happily at the sound of 15 little metal tongs clicking and the rustle of leaves being thrust inside shirts and down pants. By the end, we resembled a horde of obese scarecrows. We would then file down to the basement and empty the leaves into the terrifying maw of the fur-

nace, whose stoker — a wizened old chap who went by the name of Bram — would glare malevolently at us from under singed eyebrows and mutter “you’re next” and other motivational phrases.

Once done, we would march to the garden again to see Ma giving instructions to the trees themselves not to drop any more leaves, on pain of a good thrashing, Now, I know times are different, and it is not the done thing to force minors to clear gardens by hand, on pain of corporal pun-

Nowadays, when I stroll through the city, rather than the crunch of leaves and the wheeze of asthmatic children pushing rakes, there is just the damnable sound of brash little engines blasting out air and fumes as their wielders blow their leaves into neighbors’ yards, to in turn be whooshed further down the block and so on, until we have a virtual tsunami of dead foliage, dog poop, confused hedgehogs and raging elderly squirrels tumbling through town. And woe betide the poor person whose garden THAT lot ends up in.

So, we are drafting a new law banning those infernal machines, and tweaking the Second Amendment to require every citizen to own and train with a military-grade rake for an hour a day. This will not only keep our gardens tidy but will prove useful for when the zombie apocalypse arrives and we have the undead to handle at a safe distance.

State and County Preservation Groups Fighting West Cape May Farm’s Plan to Host Weddings “Preserved farms cannot host weddings, parties or corporate events” — Susan Payne, Executive Director NJ State Agricultural Development Committee “The sheer size of [the reception hall]! That was built for weddings. When [Wilde] came to us, she said she needed that area for storage and wine tasting events.”

“Wilde’s plans to host weddings is not allowed on preserved farmland. The county paid Wilde $890,000 in 2003 for a deed restriction that specifies 36 acres of the farm must remain in agriculture, including the land under the building.”

“She can’t do weddings. There’s been a court ruling.”

— Barbara Ernst, Director Cape May County Farmland Preservation and Open Space West Cape May is NOT suing the winery, but merely forwarded a complaint from Concerned Citizens to the County about alleged events at the winery.

Jurisdiction for farms is with the county and state… not WCM. So why target West Cape May?

The Kaithern Team held Cape May accountable to replace and pay for the flawed water meter. I

AM writing this letter as a West Cape May citizen who is honestly concerned about what I have been watching with the upcoming election. I have been baffled with the amount of allegations and what seem like distractions coming from the team of new delegates. I was initially curious to see what their platform would be... what improvements or NEW ideas they would offer to enhance the experience of living in West Cape May. And while I haven’t heard any substantive suggestions, except for one very recent ad which merely repeats what our current administration has been stating all along, I have watched a constant barrage of allegations from their side. So I set out to find some truths for myself.

I don’t know about you, but I simply want to support and encourage leadership that makes clear choices with straightforward honesty... doing what they can to serve the good of the whole. This is something I feel is missing in national politics, but have always appreciated from Mayor Pam Kaithern’s team in the last eight years.

There is no such thing as being a leader and having everyone agree with all your choices. However, I feel one sign of a true leader is demonstrating the courage to represent and defend the values of the majority who vote you into office. That is what I feel we have all witnessed. And by the way, what I have found are facts which are clearly on record for anyone interested.

One of the first allegations from the new delegates is that there has been tons of money wasted on unnecessary lawsuits. What I find is there have been TWO main issues pursued by the present administration of Kaithern’s team.

One involved following through on their promise to keep 70 row homes from being built on Sixth Avenue, which reflected the wishes of the majority and was true to the platform on which the Kaithern team ran in 2009.

The second issue was the need to find the source of a major water loss, which they did and interrupted back in 2011. With engineering help, Kaithern’s team found a broken meter, which seemed to be charging West Cape May for water actually being used by Cape May. Kaithern then presented these findings, got Cape May to replace the old meter and, most importantly, interrupted the problem from going any further.

When Cape May announced this month they are going to dispute these findings, which show that a great deal of money is owed back

to West Cape May residents, Kaithern’s team has continued to stand up for WCM residents, preparing to bring this issue to completion through mediation.

Two things are confusing to me. Why are the new delegates making allegations that the present administration has not done their job with this issue, when they clearly have? And why are they stating they would be willing to spend more money to find out what the water issues are... when that has already been done?

Finally, there have been many stories about whether the borough is suing Willow Creek Winery or has an issue with them hosting weddings and catered events. Again, it seems there are simple truths. The winery, which is a beautiful farm on Stevens Street, took an $890,000 grant of taxpayers’ money from the state to protect the land as preserved farmland. Wonderful. This financial agreement with the STATE simply requires that the winery’s activities are to be agricultural in nature.

When private citizens complained to the borough that the winery was being used for catered events the leaders were legally required to abide by the law and report the issue to the state... which they did.

After hearing many stories, what I found is that the borough is NOT suing the winery. It is the STATE that has issue with their choices. Again, it seems simple... they either get the privilege of the grant money that has specific rules and limitations OR they choose to return the grant and enjoy more personal freedoms.

What has followed is not so clear to me, where the winery has subsequently come up with several lawsuits against Kaithern and the borough. I merely look to the record that this administration has proved to consistently stand on legal grounds in resolving past issues.

I am afraid the list of allegations from the new delegates goes on, such as suggesting that our taxes have gone up in recent years. Well, all we have to do is look at our tax bills. Personally, my taxes have gone down in the last couple of years of my being a homeowner here.

Why am I am taking the time to write all of this? I want to encourage an end to the allegations and apparent distractions. Let’s return to focusing on the facts and the real issues, so that we can get on with the opportunities that make us a rare community.

I encourage each person to follow up and find out the facts for yourselves, so that we can all make an informed choice on November 5. Let’s look to the platforms presented in the last weeks from the two sets of delegates and see what they truly stand FOR. I also suggest we look to the ways each team has approached the election. They are telling us who they are... and how they would likely lead.

It seems to me that only then can we effectively decide together what kind of leadership we vote to guide our community. Simple and clear.

VER the last two weeks I have received two very highgloss multi-colored negative campaign ads in the mail related to the local West Cape May campaign. The ads are derogatory towards the current administration and the statements are not factual. These ads state in small print that they are paid for by Neighbors for West Cape May Pride, (www. wcmpride.com) and not authorized by any candidate or candidate committee. Is this

a Super PAC flooding money into the election to influence WCM voters without any acknowledgement as to where the funds have originated?

A large billboard on Seashore Road, expensive flyers and multi-colored campaign materials are being posted and circulated throughout the area. I tried to find out more by going onto the website they listed, but only became more perplexed when I found that all the items and events highlighted actually are/or were instituted,

promoted and/or enhanced by the current administration of Kaithern/Burke.

The Sunset Farmers’ Market was creatively expanded, using new open space behind the firehouse to accommodate more vendors and attract new business. The Strawberry, Tomato and Lima Bean Festivals have all been promoted, supported and enhanced by the current administration over the last twelve years.

The borough is more vibrant than ever with as many as 10 new businesses opening and thriving during this administration’s tenure.

I have lived in Cape May for 20 years, and am only a bike’s ride away from West Cape May. I have been very appreciative of the positive changes and development that has occurred in the borough, certainly increasing my day-to-day quality of life.

It would be a travesty to lose the current and talented administration because they are not able to compete with the extraordinary financial resources apparently being leveled against them.

One of the most recent “super pac” ads to show up in my mailbox states, “Some People Wear Suits...” But I would say, some people hide behind them.

This week: Taking a spin around Cool Cape May. By Catherine Dugan.

ALLOWEEN marks the end of the Cape May parking meter season, but that’s no reason to put away your bicycle. A bicycle is the best way to appreciate the charming streets of Cape May, and riding will keep you warm even when the autumn chill sets in. And, because you’re likely to ride into a brisk ocean breeze wherever you go, you’ll burn some of the extra calories you may have consumed recently. After all, 70% of parents admit to sampling their kids’ Halloween candy — and I’m a little suspicious of the rest of you.

In a flat place like Cape May, a bike makes sense when you’re running errands.

By the time you load the kids — or the spouse — in and out of their car seats and listen to them whine, you can put them in the bike seat and watch them enjoy the view. They can see a lot more of the world from a bike seat than they can from a car seat. If they’re big enough, they can pedal with you, giving you valuable basket space for a quart of milk and a loaf of bread. Most kids will jump at the chance for more outside time on a chilly

It’s not too chilly for a bike ride in Cape May November day, and the whole family is less cranky in the evening when they’ve gotten some exercise.

Head out for a forgotten ingredient at the Acme, or for paint samples from Swain’s.

Pick up a present, a birthday card and a stamp. Stop at the bank. Buy some new clothes. Carry your purchases in a simple

basket, backpack, or messenger bag. Or, if you’re serious about getting your errands done by bike, install a rear bike rack, to which you can attach an old milk crate or a couple of fancy bicycle bags called panniers. Snap on a bungee cord and you’ll expand your capacity so that you can carry home a picture from the art show or a lamp from a garage sale.

Those beautiful fall leaves on the trees will create slippery spots on the streets, so pay attention. You can’t ride on the Washington Street Mall, but there are bike racks — and use a good lock. Follow all traffic rules as you pedal, including yielding to pedestrians in a crosswalk.

Be sure you have a working light, now that the days are growing shorter. Plus, New Jersey law requires that everyone under age 17 wear a bicycle helmet, and it’s a good idea for grownups, too. Call ahead to confirm that the Village Bike Shop (609-884-8500) or other rental facility will be open when you visit.

PAUL RUNYON should be a role model to all of his peers. The freshman is open-minded about getting involved in various clubs and school activities, while also working hard to achieve his goals in the classroom. “I want to get good grades and try new things,” he says.

He is interested in playing football, and he hopes to become a Peer Leader when he becomes a senior. He wants to make high school easier for freshmen when they enter LCMR, just like his Peer Leaders are doing for him this year.

After high school, Paul would like to join the Coast Guard.

His parents’ friends are in the Coast Guard, and they have inspired him to want to be a part of it. He credits his father, Mark however, as being his greatest role model. “My dad is my biggest influence because he is such a hard worker.”
