Talk Of The Town GOINGS-ON AND GOSSIP IN AMERICA’S ORIGINAL SEASIDE RESORT

Butterfly Talk The last time we spoke about butterflies with Pete Dunne, Chief Communication Officer for the Cape May Bird Observatory, he said: “They’re beautiful, and our species delights in beautiful things. We like creatures that take great risks. The idea of a great migration is evocative.”

But when it comes to monarchs, ‘great’ migration might be an understatement.

Pete described for us how these creatures, weighing just half a gram each, make a 2,000-mile journey from eastern Canada to Mexico each year. Sometimes tens of thousands of them pass through Cape May in the fall, and sometimes millions do, resulting in a spectacle that’s been described as kaleidoscope-like.

Each year since 1991, researchers with the Monarch Monitoring Project have set out three times a day between September 1 and October 31 to conduct a census. They tag thousands of butterflies with pieces of coded adhesive paper that allow us to gather invaluable information about migration patterns.

Because of these tags, a monarch was once identified in Cape May, and then tracked down 140 miles to the south… the very next day. The results are fascinating.

So we were unsettled when we heard that fewer butterflies than average have made an appearance for the 2013 study, making this the third-lowest result in census history, according to a report from 2013 Field Technician Samm Wehman. Granted, butterfly migrations are cyclical. “Wild fluctuations are not uncommon,” says Mark Garland, Communications Director for the project.

“Many people with an interest in wildlife have realized how easy it is to grow the type of plants that butterflies need to survive,” Mark says.

But… we still worry. It is possible that manmade obstacles are playing a factor in the low census count, Mark says. These include illegal logging in Mexico, which reduces a butterfly’s sanctuary size, and the use of pesticides and genetically modified corn plants in the United States. “There is a lot of concern about environmental chemicals,” Mark says. “One of the major problems is the use of herbicide. You spray that on crops, and weeds don’t grow… including the milkweed that monarch caterpillars depend on.”

So what can we do? For starters, we can stop buying genetically modified corn, but that’s an article for another

day. In the meantime, help support the Monarch Monitoring Project’s research by adopting a tagged butterfly. For $25, you’ll receive a certificate that details the tagging information of your monarch and, if it’s found again, an update on its location. When we have a sense that populations are changing, having that data can help us change policies, and that’s a powerful thing.”

Service Shout-Out One of our writers recently scratched her cornea — don’t sleep in your contacts, folks. As you can imagine, this was not a pleasant experience. What WAS pleasant was the resulting visit to Cape Urgent Care, where everyone was, as per usual, efficient, knowledgeable,

Farewell To Uncle Nick

A tribute to the late Nick Nezaj, owner of Hotel Alcott and the Ocean Club Hotel... by his niece Valerie Biberaj

W

HEN Uncle Nick graduated high school, his brother, Uncle Steve, passed away. Nick turned to his father Elez and said, “I’m not going to be able to go to college, I have to take care of the family businesses in Cape May.” My grandfather turned to him and said, “I don’t care if I lose everything, all my businesses — you are going to college.” That’s how important education was to him.

A few years later, a month after Nick graduated from college, our grandfather received triple by-pass heart surgery. The day he came out of the operation, Nick turned to his sisters and said he’d be right back. He returned with a large envelope, which he handed to his father. He didn’t know if his dad was going to make it — and in the end, he didn’t — so he went and picked up the diploma and brought it straight to him. Those were our uncle’s high school and college graduation memories — the loss of his brother and father.

When Nick turned 40, just two short years ago, he asked all his nieces and nephews to begin calling him Uncle Nick — we usually called him Nicky. Of course, we teased him — Uncle Nick was too formal for us. And he was much more than an uncle to us. He was our older brother, our best friend, the patriarch of the family, our summer roomie, our mentor.

Every year, for the entire summer, our moms would ship us all to Cape May for Nick and poor Aferdita to deal with. They never seemed to mind, though, and we shared a home together for three months of every year. It was like Nick’s personal boot camp for us kids. He put us all to work in the restaurant or the hotel — but insisted on paying us at the end of the summer so we didn’t waste our money on nonsense. He said I was so awful at working that if I was a super hero I’d be called Slow-motion Girl.

At the end of each summer Uncle Nick would sit each of us down, and pretend to play a game. He’d tally up all the food and groceries he bought us throughout the sum-

Farewell To Uncle Nick ? From Page 23 mer, add in room and board, and come to the conclusion that we owed HIM money for being down the shore all summer. He’d say, “Since you owe me like 10k how about we just call it even? Sound good?” Then he proceeded to give us above and beyond what we had earned that summer to use toward school.

In Cape May, we’d sit around in the smallest bedroom in the apartment because it was cozy — we’d talk and write in the summer journal.

Every summer the family kept a collective journal, where we jotted down funny moments, but mostly used it as a way to make fun of each other and write down words we had mispronounced. “Write it in the journal!” became a common refrain around the apartment when someone messed something up. Nick was a regular contributor, making up quotes, writing on other people’s pages and generally running amok in the journal.

Sometimes Nick would come into our room and lay on the bed next to one of us and say, “Let’s have a laughing session.” He would start fake laughing at the top of his

lungs, which would make the rest of us laugh hysterically because it was so contagious.

Recently, the card version of Monopoly came out — it’s called Deal and it took our family by storm. We had multiple marathon sessions of Monopoly Deal. We played long into the night. Our nana would always come out and try to make us go to sleep but we kept on playing. I might add that only the family members that were actually good at the game were allowed to play — our family was survival of the fittest. It took me over a year to make it into the coveted number five spot of Monopoly Deal.

Nick also had a habit of taking the absolute WORST candid photos of every single one of us, including our moms — his sisters.

He had an entire album of my mom — Rita Las Vegas he nicknamed her — eating sunflower seeds. Picture after picture of Rita eating sunflower seeds. He caught each us at the absolute worst moments and would store the photo on his phone, then continuously text them to you OVER and OVER again, every day at random hours.

Then there was the time Nick got knee surgery. When we texted to ask him how he was recovering, he’d send us back the most gruesome picture of a knee surgery you’ve ever seen. It was a picture he found on the

internet but he sent it to you to give you a minor heart attack. And we’d call back frantically and he’d laugh at us for being so gullible.

He loved to make us laugh and play tricks on us — but he loved to do it especially to his sisters. Who can forget the time when he told my mom, the worrywart, that he was in an awful earthquake in Cape May and that there was a tsunami watch. Which she, of course, completely believed.

Beyond Cape May, Nicky took us to what seemed like every restaurant in New York City, constantly reaching out to make plans for the entire group, and paying for meals of 30-plus people without blinking an eye. He always took care of us. He always had it covered. His generosity knew no bounds.

Then there were the family vacations.

Nick took us to Aruba, Puerto Rico, Mexico... but our favorite place of all was Atlantis in the Bahamas, where we went over and over again, sometimes three or four times in a year. We’d ride the banana boats together, or all of us would go on the lazy river at the same time, or lay around the pool together ordering pina coladas. We danced, swam — there were so many of us. Then all of us would meet for family dinner together — and again our Uncle Nick would take care of

He always bothered the boys — Bek, Merg and Leo — because they never went to the beach enough. He’d say they had reverse tan lines. But us girls loved the beach. We’d go with him — Nick would buy the paper and read it on the beach, and we’d go in the water, lay around and just laugh and talk.

Nick loved to tease his nieces — Mirlinda and Suzy especially. And why not — Suzy and Mirlinda lived in the same house as Nick their whole lives.

He helped raise them after his brother, Steve — their dad — died. He yelled at them for bad grades, told them they weren’t allowed to wear eyeliner, and was the father figure in their lives.

Nick was not only a fatherfigure to all of us, but to his own beautiful daughter as well, Victoria. She is Nick’s princess, his everything. He spoiled her rotten, but he gave her his exact sense of humor in the process.

She is his mini-me. She can snag all of us three times over before we even get a chance to respond. She is his daughter, through and through.

Cape May was where Nick would spend hours upon hours in the pool with Victoria, teaching her to swim by the age of two. Nick was worried she might fall in the pool and insisted Victoria know how to swim at an early age. That winter in the Bahamas, Aferdita and Nick recalled the moment when their tiny two-year-old walked up to the deep end and horrified bystanders by jumping in.

They both laughed as Victoria swam to her daddy — daddy’s little girl.

Aferdita, his beautiful wife, has been in our family since 1996 when I was an awkward senior flower girl at her wedding. She has never been just an aunt to us — she is our sister, she’s one of us. We know how

deeply he loved her. It was obvious to us sitting around Cape May watching it — they spent every second of the day together, did everything together.

I feel like he is somehow sitting out there in this crowd of people, and that we’ll somehow lock eyes, and he’ll raise his eyebrows and do his side smirk— like he always did in serious situations like this to get you to laugh.

Although Nick suffered great loss in his lifetime — deep tragic loss — he maintained a sense of humor that could, no matter what type of day you were having, just make you laugh so hard.

He was everything to us.

The glue that held us together.

He taught us by showing us.

He taught us how to work hard.

How even when you’ve been dealt tragedy, you get up and you take care of your family.

He taught us to ALWAYS do the right thing. ALWAYS. No matter how hard it was.

He taught us to laugh, to fake laugh, to real laugh, to laugh at each other, to laugh at ourselves, not to take ourselves or life too seriously because it is so so precious. And he knew that.

Most importantly, he taught us what family is. Family isn’t a word, it’s a state of being. No matter how busy life is or how crazy work is — there is always time for family.

Nick would be so upset with himself for causing us all so much pain — he only ever wanted our happiness.

Every time he heard a sad story or bad news about anyone else, he’d shake his head, sometimes he’d tear up. He knew what that person or what that family was going through.

He knew what tragedy felt like.

Then he’d shake his head and he’d ALWAYS, ALWAYS say, “That’s life, boys and girls.

That’s life.”

Nick (Naim) Nezaj died in a car accident in Edgewater, Bergen County, NJ on Friday, October 25.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

AM over Hallowe’en; let the frantic mayhem surrounding the celebration formerly known as Christmas begin! Even as I dictate this, I can see D’Catur Mansion staff sweeping the Hallowe’en party detritus away: dumpsters filled with ruined pumpkins, tons of shed glitter, a score of costumes abandoned in mid-revel, like so many sequined Marie Celestes (the best of which is a 1:40 scale replica of Cleopatra’s barge, which is grounded on the porch. The smoky-eyed lady inside was last seen retiring to a discreet arbor with one of the three Julius Caesars who had attended. Though there were only really two real contenders for Cleo’s affections as the third had opted to come as post-assassination Caesar, and really, one might titter at a zombie Roman but would never show him one’s asp), hundreds of masks and so far 18 slumbering guests.

So, “The Holidays” as we must say these days. I am in a mood for something classic, simple, wistful. So for a change, there will be no Santa’s sleigh landing on the beach

(those reindeer left a terrible mess after well-meaning but reckless revelers fed them Christmas pudding), and ever wary of climate change, we are not guaranteed snow.

We will NOT be repeating the debacle of the year we imported an industrial snow machine from Dubai, but lost the instructions: the first four hours on Christmas Eve were perfect, with arcs of tiny flakes shooting into the air and fluttering down over the city. By 10pm, they had grown rather thick and easy passage was impossible, and by

midnight we were under six feet of drifts and it was still falling. In the end it took a kamikaze attack by the Cape May Volunteer Airforce to disable the infernal thing.

No, this year we will be elegant and restrained: gifts are to be limited to one per person, and must be made from natural materials only — wood, stone, ivory and gemstones. Well, perhaps not ivory these days, eh? Unless the whole gift is a live elephant, in which case that’s perfectly all right. And they must be hand-wrapped in paper with string fastening them. Also, we have been keeping a tally of which of the city’s minors have in fact been good or bad.

Oh, yes. And the good ones will be rewarded in due fashion, with candy canes and other tidbits. Those who have been ill behaved, though, let me just say that we took delivery of a large crate from the jungles of South America, one containing a great many small things that creep, crawl, slither and leap. So, little ones, before you tear open gifts with greedy abandon this year, be sure to think about your behaviour…

OU haven’t even finished digesting your Halloween candy, and it’s time to plan for Thanksgiving. Make choosing your wine a treat with a tour of Cape May’s

wineries.

Thanksgiving is a big day for wine consumption, and experts disagree on how to handle the wine for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. No one wine is likely to complement turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie. Your guests may be new to wine, and prefer selections on the sweeter side. Or they may be sophisticated drinkers, who insist on gewurztraminer, the spicy wine that many chefs prefer with a turkey dinner.

There may be an uncle who insists on a nice stout instead of dessert after his post-meal walk.

What’s a host to do? You can serve a different wine for every course, starting with a bubbly white for the appetizers. Or, choose to serve both a white, like chardonnay and a red, like pinot noir. Or, place a selection on the sideboard — include pinot grigio, zinfandel, beaujolais nouveaux, sparkling water, a ries-

The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (MAC) offers a few options for wine lovers this fall. The Hawk Haven winery tour on Saturday afternoons lets you taste while you learn about wine making. The

tour includes a souvenir glass and a gourmet cheese tasting. Tickets are $20. There’s also a Self-Guided Wine & Brewery Trail that takes you to two wineries, Natali Vineyards — try their beach plum wine with your chocolate — and Hawk Haven, as well as the Cape May Brewing Company so that the beer lovers aren’t excluded. BELA LOTOZO is a prime example of a well-rounded high school student. Not only is she an outstanding Advanced Placement student, ranking in the top 10% of her class, but she also scored perfectly on the English section of the ACT and the AP English Language and Composition exam.

Self motivated to excel in all aspects of life, Bela is an outstanding athlete on the field hockey and track teams at LCMR. As a twoyear captain of the field hockey team, Bela said, “I really try to motivate all of the girls by communicating throughout every game no matter what the score is.” This spring in track, Bela hopes to break the school record for the 4x400 relay race.

Outside of school, Bela was the model for artist Victor Grasso’s Fable collection. She was grateful for this opportunity because “not many people are offered this type of experience.”

The daughter of Sue and Joe and younger sister of Eliza, Bela and her family reside in West Cape May. She hopes to attend University of Washington to experience life away from the east coast.
