Talk Of The Town GOINGS-ON AND GOSSIP IN AMERICA’S ORIGINAL SEASIDE RESORT

Family In Need If you’re reading this paper on the day it comes out, that means it’s Thanksgiving. We’re supposed to be feeling grateful, but this is a tall order for some families. There are money troubles and relationship problems and all sorts of traumas to contend with that might knock gratitude down a few pegs on the list of priorities. And you’d be hard-pressed to find a family more justified in scrapping the whole giving thanks thing this year — or a family less inclined to do so — than the Dietrichs. Marion and Buzz Dietrich were prominent figures in Cape May, involved with the Corinthian Yacht Club, the Cottagers’ Association and the Chamber of Commerce. They also raised a family here; their son John Dietrich attended Lower Cape May Regional High School before relocating to Maryland. When Buzz and Marion passed away, they left their seaside home to John and his wife Judy, who raised three Cape May-loving children of their own. Last October, after a pancake breakfast at a local church, John passed away suddenly, at the age of 66. Judy and the couple’s three children, including Johnny Jr, traveled to Florida the following month to recover from the shock and grieve their collective loss. While there, on the day before Thanksgiving, Johnny experienced a pain in his shoulder which he thought he could treat with a dip in the hot tub at the family’s timeshare. Once submerged, Johnny became paralyzed from the neck down, and would have drowned if it weren’t for a passerby who called for help. “At first, they thought it was a virus,” Judy told us. “He’d had a flu shot six weeks before and in rare instances, this can trigger paralysis. I thought, ‘This is FRIDAY 11/29: Sunny, with turkey leftovers High 40 Low 30 / Sunrise 6:58 Sunset 4:39

You’ve enjoyed her empanadas at various festivals and events on the island, and now Brooke Dodds is opening a storefront on Park Boulevard, West Cape May. See story on page 6. Frank Weiss

bad, but it’s going to be okay.’ Then, they said it was inflammation of the spinal cord, which is worse. It wasn’t until a month later, when Johnny was transported home to Maryland, that he was given the correct — and most devastating — diagnosis. “Spinal stroke,” Judy said, “which is very rare, but especially for a 39-year-old, healthy man like Johnny. He didn’t even have blood pressure problems, or anything like that. And the doctors told him he would never walk again.” Remarkably, Johnny did not retreat into the deep, dark place you’d expect — not even when the realization hit home that he’d now have to be a very different type of father to his two daughters, aged three and seven. “They are the light of his life,” Judy said. “He was a coach for their soccer team, and he

can’t do that anymore, but he still goes to their games. He’s amazingly upbeat.” And Johnny’s ability to stay this way can be attributed to the love of family, friends and community. “His wife Tanya has been by his side every step of the way,” Judy said. “This has made their marriage even stronger, if possible.” Last June, a miracle happened: Johnny wiggled his own toes. Since then, he has gotten feeling back in his arms, he’s able to turn himself over in bed, and the doctors are saying there is a chance he might walk again. In the meantime, Johnny is busy supporting his family as a financial planner. Voice-activated software, along with an accommodating employer, have allowed him to return to work. And although the setbacks continue — Johnny’s beloved godmother died from cancer in April,

and last week he had to put down his cat of 19 years, who sat by his bedside every day – he continues to be a rock for his family. “Seeing him struggle with everyday things we all take for granted gives me the strength to keep pushing forward,” Judy said. “I’m a worrier, and Johnny keeps telling me, ‘Mom, don’t sweat the small stuff.’ That is so true.” But the money required to treat Johnny’s condition is far from small stuff, and so, despite the protestations of proud Johnny, the Dietrichs have launched a fundraising campaign. The costs of an electric wheelchair, modified van, twice-weekly therapy sessions, and visiting nurses only scratch the surface. Johnny’s home in Maryland could still use a more accessible bathroom and Judy’s home in Cape May could use adjustments as well (provided the Historic Preservation Committee approves them). “He’s a beach person,” she told us. “He loves Cape May so much; he was married at the pavilion. This past Fourth of July, we couldn’t stay at my house, because there isn’t a handicap

ramp yet, but we stayed at the Jetty Motel. Johnny was able to watch the fireworks and see his kids in the pool. It was a pretty special week for us.” To make a donation and leave a comment — which the entire family will read as a huge “morale booster” — visit youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/ love4johnny/98540. “We’re excited to spend Thanksgiving together,” Judy said. “We try to remember that things could always be worse.” Jim Needs Our Help, Too We’re sad to follow Johnny’s plight with another traumatic story. Jim Wright,

who was well known in Cape May when he managed the Corinthian Yacht Club and later carried out beautiful carpentry work in homes around the area, was recently diagnosed with a stage four cancer called myoepithelial carcinoma. Doctors have told Jim it’s incurable, but he thinks otherwise. We chatted with Jim via Facebook and he was a model of dignity and, better still, optimism. Jim didn’t know it at the time but his friends were wasting no time in organizing a fundraiser for him and his wife Christa and four children. The couple will be flown from their Michigan home to Cape May the weekend of December 7-8. They will enjoy some fabulous Cape May accommodation and on Sunday, December 8, from noon until 4pm, they will enjoy the fabulous friendships of people who care about them at the Cape May VFW. Whether you were close with Jim or just knew him in passing, come along and support this fine man, who is only in his 40s. Tickets are $20. Or you can contribute to a page set up by his family: www.gofundme.com/5d75uw.

Way To Go, Mayer’s Thrillist.com, a website for men which spotlights underappreciated food and drink, has named Mayer’s Tavern, a harborfront institution, one of the 33 best dive bars in America. The criteria? According to the story’s intro, these are “places where the drinks are as strong as the parking lot brawls, the prices are as cheap as the chick you made out with in the bathroom, and everything that is good in the world thrives.” Hey, no such thing as bad PR, right? Congrats, Mayer’s! New Store In Town You’ve seen the Empanada Mama — aka Brooke Dodds, aka the girl with the red flower in her hair — hawking her delicious empanadas (meat-filled, vegetarian, vegan, sweet, and savory) from a cart at the strawberry, lima, and tomato festivals, the Dragon Boat festival, Oktoberfest, and Cape May Brewing Company. Soon, you’ll be able to find her in a more permanent location, on Park Boulevard. In the space formerly occupied by Seaside Cheese, Brooke will open her take-out spot around mid-January, with hours from about 10am to 8pm, though details are still being hammered out. The menu will be empanada-heavy, with some additional, equally scrumptious items. “I’ve always wanted to have a storefront,” she told us. “I’ve just been waiting for the right spot to come around. I’m very excited; I can’t wait to get in there and start working.” But first, Brooke has to finish relocating herself. “I’m moving off the island so I can afford to have the business on the island!” she said. Best of luck, Brooke! Cups For A Cause Lace Silhouettes Lingerie is partnering with Cape May’s Center for Community Arts to present a Holiday Bra Extravaganza: Cups for a Cause. Staff members from both Lace Silhouettes and the Center for Community Arts will be designing, decorating and donating holiday-themed bras that will be on display and for sale at Lace Silhouettes on the Washington Street Mall through January 2, with all proceeds benefitting the Center for Community Arts. The best part? You’re welcome to participate, too. The only requirement is that your bra be new and familyfriendly. “They don’t necessarily have to be practical,” said Lace Silhouettes Assistant Manager/Buyer, Jen Matylewicz. “They can be fun and crazy, too.” You have until December 6 to drop off your mammary masterpiece; the unveiling of all bras will take place the following day at 11am. The Movie Column

B

Gayle Stahlhuth of East Lynne Theater Company reviews “Philomena”

ASED on the 2009 book The Lost Child of Philomena Lee by Martin Sixsmith, Philomena is humorous, touching, and triumphant. The engaging script is co-written by Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope, and Stephen Frears’ direction well supports the actors and this incredible, true story. The film opens right after Sixsmith, played by Coogan, has been fired as a correspondent for the BBC. With time on his hands, he tells people he can finally write that book about Russia. When someone suggests he write a human interest story, his response is sarcastic. Then he meets Philomena, portrayed by Judi Dench, an Irish woman who wants desperately to find her 50-year old son. Philomena’s mother died when she was six, and her father, not knowing how to care for her, sent her off to a convent. She’d received no sex education whatsoever, and her first encounter with a boy results in a pregnancy. Her father rejects her, leaving her completely in the care of the convent where

Judi Dench and Steve Coogan in Philomena she lives with other young unwed mothers, works for her keep in a laundry seven days a week, and is allowed to see her son only one hour a day. When he is adopted at age three-and-a-half by an American couple, she has no say in the matter. As Sixsmith and Philomena begin to uncover the truth, it is apparent that those at the convent are hiding something. There are many moments that linger. Seeing the young Philomena, played with

simple innocence by Sophie Kennedy Clark, watch her son being whisked away in a car is heartbreaking. On the other extreme, there’s the older Philomena, with Sixsmith, describing a romantic novel she’s reading, in nonstop detail as they make their way through the airport to their plane to America. She offers to lend him the book, but he responds with, “I feel I’ve just read it.” Fortunately, I attended a recent screening in New York City, where Coogan and Clark, and the real Philomena Lee and Martin Sixsmith, were on hand for Q&A. When asked if she was pleased that Dench played her in the movie, Philomena responded with, “Oh, very much! When I told them she was playing me, my friends thought I was daft. Well, I am 80, but I’m not daft.” As she continued her tale, with gentle humor and strength, it was obvious why Sixsmith found himself helping her. She talked about losing her faith, and finding it again. This was truly a remarkable film. If you have a movie you’d like to review, please email capemayfilm@hotmail.com.

The Old Fogey

P

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

EOPLE are always commenting on my column. “Magnificent!” they declare, eyeing it greedily. “Keeps me up all night!” they declare. Also, sometimes they comment on my weekly musings in this newspaper. I know, I know, I just grow funnier over the years, and you must wonder if at some stage I will be so hilarious I will simply combust! But settle down now, wipe your eyes and rest your aching abdominals. It is time for some insider secrets. First, I do not actually write this from the Exit Zero offices (wherever they are: I long assumed they were in the back of an aged convertible driven by a belligerent little Scotchman). Most often I dictate from The D’Catur Mansion in town, and my faithful Manservant, Kitchener, takes it all down, cuts out expletives and the bawdier tales and sends it on, somehow. Often I handwrite it on fine vellum, using a fountain pen crafted from the finest ivory, and a burly Scotchman eventually arrives at the door and snatches it from my hand

with a scowl. He then has to run as fast as his little legs can carry him, since I release the hounds (well, Young Albert, the hound) after 10 seconds. Other times I use the telephonic device and ask Gladys on the switchboard to “get me the editor”. I do wonder if she ever does, but whoever answers in Cape May knows to just take notes and pass them on. Once, I dictated the entire missive from a dirigible, using Morse Code — 465 words worth of dots and dashes. A masterpiece. “How long does it take?” they ask.

“Genius is not to be rushed,” I muse, tapping out my pipe and waggling my empty whisky glass at them in mute demand for a refill. “It can be as fast as five seconds, or as long as 40,” I say, “depending on whether my muse is present or not.” Certainly I can dictate it faster than any compositor can pour the hot lead, or however those chaps do their job nowadays. “What if you run out of words, or space?” they press me. Well, the former is never going to happen, but sometimes I look down and demand Kitchener count how many words I have written, and if he says “3,000” as is often the case, I simply say “end with one of my stock sayings or jokes! And cut from the bottom!” and no one every notices! Of course, the best weeks are when it is not in fact me at all! Such as the week that Young Albert, having finally mastered the keyboard with his stubby little paws, types the whole thing himself and hits “send”, adding only a ‘send more bones!’ reminder at the end. Send more bones!

Give your Fall some flavor!

A Personal Appeal...

O

UR FAMILY WAS FOREVER CHANGED on November 21st, 2012, the day before last Thanksgiving, when my son John Diedrich, Jr. (“Johnny”) was suddenly paralyzed from the neck down. Johnny woke up that morning with a terrible pain in his neck. Thinking it was a strained muscle, he went to the hot tub to fix the pain. With no warning, he became completely paralyzed in a matter of minutes. After months of tests, doctors conclusively determined the cause of the paralysis – a spinal cord stroke, the worst diagnosis for recovery. Johnny was sent home on February 21st with his wife, Tanya, as his full time caregiver. What a daunting task for Tanya, to take care of the house, 2 small children, and a paralyzed husband! I’m so happy to let you know that Johnny has recently improved a bit, but all of us know that the road ahead will be a long one filled with many challenges. Johnny is the son of John (Dale) Diedrich Sr. who passed away last October in Cape May and he is the grandson of Marian and “Buz” Diedrich. They were very involved in Cape May activities. Marian was a realtor in Cape May for 40 years and secretary of the Chamber of Commerce , Beach Club, Yacht Club and Cottager’s Association. We still have the house my husband was born and raised in on Idaho Ave. Thanks to a caring employer and voice activated software, Johnny was able to return to work a few months ago. He has been able to continue his health insurance through his employer; however, there are thousands of dollars of medical bills and new expenses not covered. Throughout Johnny’s illness, we have been incredibly blessed with generous and thoughtful contributions from our friends. But Johnny and his family really need some financial help and we are hoping to raise enough money for Johnny to pay his medical expenses and help modify his home so he can focus on therapy and improve his quality of life.

Please, if you are able to help, go to this link for information: youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/love4johnny/98540

Dear Answer Lady I recently reunited with my boyfriend after splitting up for a few months, and things are better than ever. We’re very much in love, and not afraid to show it. I found this annoying. Is there anything wrong with showing affection? – Smooching Suzy Dear Suzy Showing affection to one’s significant other is a wonderful thing. It’s one of the things that makes life worth living, to The Answer Lady’s way of thinking. The key, however, is in not trapping a captive, unwilling audience. At the end of the day,

it’s simply a matter of being aware of one’s surroundings. (Hotel room? Sure. Dance floor at Cabanas? On occasion. At the Hanukkah table? NO.) There is a time and a place for everything, but it’s permissible in mixed company to exchange a quick kiss, squeeze a lover’s hand, or even an affectionate (and swift) pat on the rump. The Book Certificate Giveaway Of The Week

Page 67

Every week we hand over a $25 spending voucher to an unsuspecting person, thanks to Cape Atlantic Book Company Who are you? I’m Marisa, from Reading, PA. [No last name — witness protection, we suspect. Note the sunglasses, too.] What where you doing when I interrupted you? Gift shopping on the Washington Street Mall. Why did you come to Cool Cape May? For a few days of relaxation, a little getaway. We love the beach, and it’s a quiet town (really quiet right now). Do you come here often? It’s our new tradition. What do you like better, summers or winters in Cape May? Winters — we spend our summers in the islands What do you do for a living? I’m a nurse. What’s the last really good movie you’ve seen? Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

EMERALD is a very sweet and loving Jack Russell Terrier. She is a very calm dog who loves to play, with a few tricks up her sleeve (she knows how to dance). She gets along okay with kids, but not so much with cats or other dogs. If you’re looking for a very sweet girl to light up your day, stop on in the shelter and give Emerald a second chance. She is up to date on all vaccines, spayed. The adoption fee is $90.

«

PENNY is a cute and sweet girl who can be the perfect couch potato but also likes to play games like fetch. She know how to greet people politely without jumping, to walk nicely without pulling on the leash, and much more. Plus, she is very affectionate. Affectionate with manners, a sense of humor, brains, and beauty, what more could you ask for in a lifelong best friend.

«

BARNABY is a very energetic pit bull terrier who just loves to play with his toys. He is a little possessive, so it would be best to be in a home without children. He is also very social, but he he needs some work on my manners. If Barnaby sounds like a good fit for you, stop on in the shelter and give him a second chance. He is up to date on all vaccines, neutered, and the adoption fee is only $35.

SHERMAN is a young domestic short-hair cat who is a very affectionate little guy that just loves to talk. He also really like to be pet, and he probably will make a fantastic lap cat. If you are looking for a wonderful little guy to brighten up your day, stop on in the shelter and give Sherman a second chance. He is up to date on all vaccines, neutered and house trained.

«

SNOOPY came into the shelter with his brother. They were brought to the shelter because their owners were evicted, and had no where else to go. They are both very sweet and love attention. If you think you can spare the time and love for two guys down on their luck, stop on in the shelter and give them a second chance. They are up to date on all vaccines, neutered, and the adoption fee is only $35.

Happy Thanksgiving!

ACHILLIES came into the shelter because there were problems at home, and his family could no longer take care of him. Now he is here trying to cope with the shelter life. He needs to find a new loving family soon. He is a friendly older guy that loves life and he is declawed. If Achillies sounds like the right fit for you, stop on in the shelter and give him a second chance.

Activity Of The Week

Y

This week: Giving art as a gift. By Catherine Dugan.

OU have to be careful when giving art as a gift. After all, experts say you should only buy art if you love it, because you have to live with it. You have the wall space for a large painting, and maybe YOU want to wake up to a large mermaid sculpture every morning — but your brother doesn’t. Maybe YOU are intrigued by encaustic paintings, which combine wax and pigment to create to create multilayered effects — but your sister doesn’t see the attraction. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But if buying a large piece of art as a gift is tricky, buying a tiny piece isn’t. Art makes a thoughtful present, and keeping it small takes the pressure off of the recipient, who doesn’t have to worry about finding a place to display it. There’s always room for a small painting of the beach or an ornament in the shape of a starfish. Consider your target’s hobby’s and interests — a photo of an osprey for a birdwatcher, or garden art for your pal with the green thumb. The fashionista in your life may like handmade jewelry or a painted scarf. Be sure to

A great gift for Cape May fans include a frame, if appropriate, so your gift is ready to display, and don’t expect to dictate where it goes in the recipient’s house. Art is all around you in Cape May. The Washington Street Gallery lets you browse beach scenes in a variety of sizes. Shop online for beautiful Cape May-themed coasters and notecards at patriciaraineystudios.com. The Cape May Artists’ Cooperative, a group of area artists, dis-

plays their work in the West End Garage on West Perry Street, with items as small as earrings. Every visit to the SOMA NewArt Gallery in Carpenters Square Mall offers something completely different. Cape May on Canvas has digital giclees that capture the beach, along with little nightlights. Gallery D’May has “peacefully enchanting” local works. Linger over brunch at the Mad Batter and consider their exhibit. And then there’s the Exit Zero Store and Gallery, which hosts a huge collection of local art by Mike DeMusz, Victor Grasso and more. Browse through Splash and Whale’s Tale for jewelry, ornaments, and art books, including Cape May A to Z by Janet Payne and Paige Cunningham, a children’s book featuring illustrations by members of the community. Step into the Madd Potter’s Studio for things you didn’t know you needed, like incense matches. Across the Way offers charming sculptures along with unusual wall art, jewelry and accessories. And, if you really like a piece, but it’s too big to give as a gift, you can always treat yourself. Next week: Breakfast with the Big Guy

SENIOR Gabriella McKeown clinched a huge win for the LCMR soccer team in their South Jersey quarter-finals game against rival Middle Township. Gab scored a goal from 30 yards out to place the Lady Tigers in the lead during the very competitive match. “When I kicked the ball, I knew I had the power behind it to score, but I thought the goalie would stop it since the ball bounced in the mud,” said Gab. The daughter of Jennifer and John McKeown, Gab says that her father is her main supporter and greatest motivator. “I can always hear my dad yelling and cheering for me from the sidelines.” Gab was recently offered a full scholarship to Division I Temple University to play soccer. “It was such a relief as well as my proudest moment in my soccer career,” Gab said of accepting Temple’s offer. She believes that she is prepared to play at the Division I level because she played for the Olympic Development Program’s New Jersey team. At Temple University, Gab is considering majoring in psychology. She anticipates having a very successful soccer career and aspires to play the game professionally.
