Talk Of The Town GOINGS-ON AND GOSSIP IN AMERICA’S ORIGINAL SEASIDE RESORT
Historic Honor For NASW Dr Joseph Salvatore, an orthopedic surgeon/veteran of the army who grew up in Wildwood, remembers watching the planes of World War II flying overhead as a little boy. It had a great impact on him, bolstering the connection he felt to NAS, the naval aviation training facility where his brother worked, at the site of the current Cape May County Airport… a facility with a story that, thanks to Joe and his wife Annie, is being told. NAS was decommissioned in 1946, and many of its buildings were sold and moved elsewhere. In 1997, when the remainder were slated for demolition, Joe and Annie stepped in. It didn’t matter that Hangar Number One, the largest NAS structure, now housed bird droppings six inches deep, or that the hole in its roof spanned 100-by-150-feet — the couple purchased the space from the county for $1. “This place is a big part of Cape May County history,” Joe told us. “There were 129 crashes here; 42 men died. We felt honored to be able to tell that story.” With $3.4 million in grant money raised, Hangar Number One was successfully transformed into the Naval Air Station Wildwood Museum, or NASW, which was eventually listed on the New Jersey State And National Registers of Historic Places. Last week, the Salvatores’ — who also founded Historic Cold Spring Village — experienced another milestone moment: the recognition and celebration of a NASW Historic District where various aircraft, engines and special exhibits are on display. The most special to Joe? “My favorite pieces are the torpedo bombers, or TBMs,” he said. “This is the type that was flown at that hangar during World War II. They were made in New Jersey — 7,500 of them in FRIDAY 12/13: Mostly sunny High 34 Low 30 / Sunrise 7:10 Sunset 4:38

Trenton alone — and they were made mostly by women. It’s also the type of airplane that President George Bush, Sr was shot down in during World War II. It’s got a lot of meaning to us.” The recognition of the historic district comes at an interesting time, when one might say there’s an entrepreneurial district blossoming at the airport simultaneously. We are referring to Cape May Roasters, the little bean company brought to you by the people behind the Washington Inn, Lucky Bones, and Love the Cook that’s taken up residence here. Head roaster Doug Marandino who, along with wife Andi, owns the Cape May Honey Farm store on Sunset Boulevard, spends about 30 hours a week in the busy season grinding Hawaiian, Mexican, Kenyan, Tanzanian, Ethiopian, Honduran, Nicaraguan, and
Columbian beans, because the difference between fresh-ground and, well, not? “Night and day,” he told us. Then there’s Cape May Brewing Company, whose production has increased so much they’ve recently added a new storage facility, at the Tomwar building on Breakwater Road. And in their tap room, the number of taps has been increased from 12 to 24, according to Marketing and Media Manager Maggie Clark, so that more beers can be featured at one time. Equally new and exciting? Be on the lookout for brews — one keg at a time, so get there quickly — infused with spices and fruit on Wednesdays. Up next: Peppermint chocolate stout. “It really energizes us to see the airport coming to life like this,” Joe said. But don’t take his word for it… check it

out for yourself. Talkin’ Bout The Parade “Overall, people are raving,” said West Cape May Mayor Pam Kaithern about last weekend’s West Cape May Christmas Parade. “The best parade yet, that’s what we’re hearing. What it comes down to — this is a hometown event. It’s not made up to be something it’s not. This is a tradition people hold on to, and it’s something that hasn’t changed a lot over the years.” Except that it’s gotten bigger, Pam told us, adding that West Cape May is now having to turn down bands who’d like to participate. As for those pesky gaps in the lineup? “There’s not much we can do about those, though we’ll work on inventive ways to reduce them,” Pam said. “But any time you have people performing, you’re going to have gaps.” Bottom line: more time to sip your hot cocoa and enjoy what many are calling one of the best nights of the year in Cape May. Congratulations to all who pulled this one off!

Now through December 17, bring non-perishable food items to the Cape May Fire Department, or the First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, to benefit the Cape May Food Closet. Where To Bring Your Canned Goods East Lynne Theater Company is accepting nonperishable items for the Cape May Food Closet. What is needed are cans of fruit, paper towels, and toilet paper. Any canned food items will be accepted, as long as they are not expired. Bring an item to the December 13 performance of ELTC’s Christmas with Harte and O. Henry and save $3 off your admission price. Attend the December 14 matinee, and part of your admission money will benefit Cape Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. Bring canned and non-perishable

The Movie Column
Dottie Knapp on a night of ridiculously warm and fuzzy movie-watching on December 16
W
E KNOW what you’re saying, “I’d love to watch all those great holiday movies on DVD or on TV, but I cannot do one more thing this holiday season.” How about if the Cape May Film Society scratched one thing off your holiday to-do list? In one funfilled night, the Cape May Film Society will present all of the greatest moments in most of the best of Hollywood’s Holiday Films — all in one night with you favorite beverage, some snacks, and a chance to win prizes. Oh, and it’s all for free. Once the turkey is put away and the last football game has been won or lost, it’s time to get out the Christmas DVDs. Everyone has their favorite. Now mix them with the Lifetime network heart-wrenchers and the network specials and it gets to be December 24 and you didn’t get to see even half of them. Cape May Film Society to the rescue. On Monday, December 16 at 7pm at the West Cape May Borough Hall, Mal, my husband, and I will present Hollywood
Which is your holiday favorite? Holidays, a compilation of scenes from just about every Christmas movie. As you watch the best clips, you will be that much more in the holiday spirit. We will be showing Christmas disasters (which will hopefully makes yours less bothersome), clips of what we are calling Warm Fuzzies (that tear in the eye, awhhh moment), the iconic parts of everyone’s
favorite ghost story, A Christmas Carol, and spectacular music movie moments. Which movies will we feature? Come and find out. There will be trivia and a chance to win some great prizes, and who doesn’t like dessert and coffee? Please RSVP to capemayfilm@hotmail.com and tell us whether you want coffee, tea or hot chocolate. If you have a favorite movie let us know and tell us why — it could be the basis for next year. IN MEMORIA: The passing of Nelson Mendela has brought about great mourning but also celebration of a historic figure for our lifetime. As we see the news reels there are of course clips from the 2009 film, Invictus and this year’s, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. His life was a tribute to the human spirit, the power of forgiveness, and the triumph of perseverance. Let us know if you’d like to see Invictus as a group by emailing capemayfilm@hotmail.com or texting/ calling 609-326-FEST. We will arrange for a private screening.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
HATE having the D’Catur Mansion full of rabbits. They get underfoot, constantly demand attention, scream all day long and poop in the pot plants. Plus they pester me to change the channel on the televisual receiver from “World War 2 in Color” to something called “Bob and His Sponge-like Pants”. Oh, wait, I mean children rather than rabbits, but still, the only way to deal with either happens to be a shotgun loaded with salt buckshot. Hold on, now I mean Wildwooders, but really, who could blame me if I peppered those dreadful children/rabbits, too? No one, that’s who, except, one supposes, parents, the local police and the media. So I must suffer in glowering silence as some three-score of my descendants tear around causing havoc, kept in check only by Kitchener and Young Albert. The former wields a Zulu shield and iklwa, as is his birthright, and the latter veers between wanton savagery (he detests that fat lad in the short pants who may be my great-granddaughter’s third child and who once tried to wipe
his poopy behind with Young Albert) and inexplicable kindness (he allows those tiny triplets to take turns riding him like a pony). But still, even as I type I can hear something smashing in the Upper East Wing, where I store my Ming Dynasty pottery, and the tinkle of smashing glass from the herpetarium. The second of those will likely serve some little miscreant right, but the first is worrying. Though less than the realization that the secret door to my cryogenics vault is ajar, and some icy tendrils are roiling out: if it is Walt
Disney they have defrosted then that might be handy for post-dinner entertainment, but if it’s that Adolf Hitler chap then it’ll be the usual week-long hunt with boathooks and burlap sacks to get him back in his freezer. I am not sure why they are all here, but I have a terrible feeling they might be planning to stay through Christmas, in the hope that I may expire from the weight of their affections (D’Caturs tend to be conniving and unscrupulous, as well as charming and plausible. Needless to say I employ my own private cook and food taster for just such affectionate family get-togethers). This means I must receive AND dispense gifts: I swear there is a landfill in Cape May that is full of slippers, novelty “World’s #1 Grandpa” mugs and paper shredders. For my part I usually get everyone a tiny bottle of fine Malt, regardless of the recipient’s age, and then sit back and watch the floorshow. It costs a pretty penny but the (covertly filmed) emotional meltdowns warm my heart and might come in handy should I need to blackmail anyone.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I married within six months of meeting. I’d met his parents, who are lovely. However, I just spent my first Thanksgiving at their house, and was alarmed by my father-in-law’s behavior. After dinner, he pushed his chair back, unbuckled his belt, and unfastened the top button on his pants. After we left, my husband shrugged it off, saying it’s just something his dad’s always done, and that it’s no different than loosening one’s tie at the table. Really? – Etiquette Girl Dear Etiquette The Answer Lady shares your horror at this uncivilized behavior. Our first order of business is to get your husband to see the error in thinking this is acceptable, lest you be seated across the table from him 30 years

hence, watching him do the same. Also, the Answer Lady vehemently disagrees that this is no different than loosening one’s tie, since presumably one’s underpants will not accidentally make an appearance when one’s tie is loosened AT THE DINNER TABLE. Your husband forgot the old “well, it IS his house” defense, which your FIL would have likely trotted out had you spoken up. And indeed, this is crucial information, as one would hope that this behavior IS confined to the privacy

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
«
OLLIE is a sweet playful boy who loves walks and is great on a leash. He would be happy just sitting on a couch watching football with a favorite person on Sundays. He is a student in the CLASS training program at the shelter. He will share toys with you and snuggle on your lap. He is also crate-trained, making it easier to adjust to my new home. If Ollie sounds like a good fit, come in and meet him.
«
BEAR is a very friendly and social boy. He does need a bit of training, because he does tend to get a little overexcited when he plays. He is going to be best in a home without smaller children, or cats, but he does get along okay with other dogs. If you think Bear sounds like a good fit for you, stop on in the shelter and give him a second chance. He is up to date on all vaccines, neutered, and the adoption fee is $95.
«
MAHOGANY was brought to the shelter because her owner passed away, and there was no one else to take care of her. She has excellent manners and has been through lots of training at the shelter in CLASS. She is very sweet, playful and loves sitting on the trainers’s lap and snuggling. She also enjoys being brushed and petted. She is up to date on all vaccines, spayed, and the adoption fee is $95.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
«
HAMLET has been waiting patiently here at the shelter for someone to take him home. He is very sweet and loving. He just loves to be pet, and could make a good lapcat. He is okay with other cats, though he really prefers his own diet of K/D food. If you think Hamlet sounds like a good fit for you, stop on in the shelter and give him a second chance. He is up to date on all vaccines, neutered, and the adoption fee is only $8.
«
FELIX is a sweet guy, with a lot of love to give. He is a large cat but that just means extra love. He has been at the shelter for a little while now and he really would like to find a good home. He loves to cuddle and give hugs. If you are interested in meeting Felix please come to the shelter and give him a second chance. He is up to date on all vaccines, neutered, and house-trained.
«
MIRA and her brothers Coke and Pepsi have been been trying to adjust to the shelter life, but would really shine in a home environment. They are all fairly sweet kids, but still need some time to get used to being handled. If you think you could spare the time and love for some kids down on their luck, stop on in the shelter. They are up to date on all vaccines, spayed/neutered, and the adoption fee is $70.

Activity Of The Week
This week: Take a trip to festive Cape May. By Catherine Dugan.

OU love them, and you feel lucky to have family and friends with whom to spend the holidays, but that doesn’t mean they won’t drive you a little nuts. It’s a lot of work to be gracious and kind for an extended family visit. You have to sleep on a chilly airbed and play Candy Land with the kids, even though they cheat. You have to be nice to Aunt Debbie Downer and Uncle Master of the Universe. And you have to listen — again — to the family stories that embarrass you, like the time you got stuck on a dead end for an hour when you were learning to drive a stick, and some old man had to drive you home. Hypothetically. Of course, there are rewards. When your grown-up nephew remembers that you always came to his birthday parties, or the toddler chooses your lap to sit on, you’ll feel awash in Christmas spirit. But before you face the family, spend a weekend in Cape May. Shop for gifts on the Washington Street Mall during Hospitality Nights — Thursday, December 12 and Friday, December 13 from 7 till 9pm — and enjoy sales and specials. Tra-
Winter Wonderland at Congress Hall really DOES look better in color... in person. ditionally, guests are treated to grog at Swede Things and egg nog at the Original Fudge Kitchen. Look for spiced nuts from Gallery D’May, wine and cheese at Up In Smoke, and cookies and beer at Bath Time. The Zoo Company will have animal crackers, naturally. In addition to the treats, there are the decorated windows, Kris Kringle at Della’s, Christmas

lights to set the mood and Scrooge-proof charity events to knock the humbug right out of you. Sleep over at one of Cape May’s charming inns, where your toughest decision will be whether or not to have cinnamon in your coffee. The Albert Stevens Inn is all decked out for the holidays, and it’s only steps away from your antique shopping destinations. You can’t be a grinch staying at a place named Gingerbread House or Angel of the Sea, and there are holiday specials at many establishments, like the Queen Victoria’s 222 package, and the Winters are Wonderful deals at Cape Resorts. Then there’s Dormer House, always spectacularly lit. Cruise around looking at the holiday lights, or singalong on a trolley tour. Ask your innkeeper about local churches where you can celebrate the spiritual side of the season, then walk along the beach and remind yourself how small you are. Cape May’s Christmas spirit will make it easier to hear all about your cousin’s perfect child and your godmother’s rheumatism. Slap on a smile and listen. Next week: Winter Walks

LOWER Cape May Regional High School senior JEFF SMITH is a very well-rounded young man. The 17-year-old native of North Cape May is currently ranked second in the senior class, while also being an active member of Key Club, National Honor Society, and Peer Leaders, and the number one singles player and captain of the varsity tennis team. Jeff is enrolled in all Advanced Placement classes, and his favorite class is engineering. “I highly recommend taking intro to engineering. It really made me want to follow that career path,” said Jeff. Jeff is looking at Rutgers University with the goal of majoring in mechanical/civil engineering. He also hopes to play tennis at the college level. Story by Holly Wilson / Photograph by Jake Fitzmaurice
