3/9: Dress Rehearsal For Cape May Stage’s “Cinderella”

Thirteen children from Cape May, West Cape May, and Lower and Middle Townships will perform Cinderella at Cape May Stage’s Robert Shackleton Playhouse on March 16 at 6pm, March 17 and 23 at 1pm, and March 24 at 6pm.

We called Director Debbie Lewis who told us how proud she is of all the kids. “Not only because of how well they’ve learned their parts,” she said, “but because of who they are as young people. These are such respectful, creative, delightful children.”

This version of the show was written by Dr. Joseph Kline of Philadelphia’s LaSalle University.

“He did his own little twist, and added some humor,” Debbie said. “It’s appropriate for all ages.”

3/7: St. Baldrick’s Event At Richard M. Teitelman Middle School

In 2000, three reinsurance agents, instead of getting plastered for St. Patrick’s Day, hosted a head-shaving event in a Manhattan pub to raise money for childhood cancer research. The concept grew legs and became the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, an organization that’s taken hold in our own community. On March 7, 40 students and seven adminstrators/ staff members went under the razor at Richard M. Teitelman Middle School.

The goal was to raise $15,000... at the time we went to press, the total was looking closer to the $16,000 mark, which means when all is said and done, Lower Township students should be within the $80,000 to $90,000 range for money raised since 2010. “I am extremely proud,” English teacher Anthony Dalleo, who coordinated the event along with Paul Schulte, told us. “Words can’t express it. It’s just amazing that two two grade levels — seventh and eighth — could raise this much money.” Another Saint Baldrick’s event at Lower Cape May Regional High School , coordinated by teacher TJ Belasco, will take place on March 28. Surf’s Up Happiest people in Cape May last week? Surfers. Lucky Bones busser and local shredder, Logan Fellows, told us about the waves at Poverty Beach after our last nor’easter. “The faces were six or seven, maybe eight feet,” he said.

It’s especially exciting considering that Poverty’s waves haven’t broken in an ideal way in some time. “I hadn’t paddled out there in over a year,” Logan said. “After all of the beach replenishment, they broke in ankle-deep water.”

But the last swell brought even professional, Ocean City-based surfers to Cape Island, including Rob Kelly, who’s sponsored by mega-brand Billabong, and Andrew Gessler, who rides for Hurley. We checked Rob’s Twitter account, where on March 8 he referred to New Jersey’s waves as “epic.”

Same Old Story WE REALLY had hoped that a new year would bring some change at City Hall. We had heard that Mayor Ed Mahaney intended to take a different tack in his second term and that he was tired of the controversy his administration had created over the past few years. And things were looking good when he created a Mayoral Advisory Committee comprised of a diverse cross-section of people invested in Cape May’s future.

Then we attended last week’s city council...

One of our biggest worries last year was that nothing seemed to come of the $53,000 contract between the City of Cape May and Temple University. Hammered out in August of 2009, it was supposed to yield a marketing and business plan for the new

$10.5 million Convention Hall.

Never mind the problem we have with the number of contracts that have come to pass between the city and this university, including one for Convention Hall’s landscaping work and one for conceptual designs for some of Cape May’s open spaces, neither of which went out to bid. Let’s just focus on the fact that beginning in August of 2009, Temple experts were supposed to be coming up with an inventive, efficient way to market the city’s most expensive undertaking and, potentially, its greatest asset.

When none arrived, the Cape May Taxpayers Association pressed the city. We attended a November meeting of the organization in which Vice-President Dennis Crowley told us they’d asked “nicely, politely, and repeatedly,” and that they’d heard crick-

ets in response.

At a meeting of city council last Tuesday, they asked again.

Representative Shaine Meier asked what Temple’s projection for flood insurance was. He asked what the projected and actual operating costs were for the building in 2012, what the projected and actual revenues for the building were in 2012, and what the projected revenues and operating costs are for 2013. By our count, that’s seven questions.

City Manager Bruce MacLeod offered one answer, though it wasn’t an answer to any of the questions asked.

“The contract was divided into several sections,” he said.

“The part pertaining to the business plan had a budgeted price value of $5,000.” Which, of course,

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 doesn’t tell us what the $53,000 did go toward. “Temple did provide all the deliverables,” Bruce continued. “You can decide for yourself whether you were satisfied with the portion that was relevant to the business plan. It was reported on at the May 18th meeting.”

Oh, right. The meeting at Convention Hall that was supposed to be the culmination of this partnership. The one that included such fascinating revelations as, “The main reasons for summer 2011 visitors to visit the City of Cape May were vacation and getaway.” And did you know that people like coming here for the beach? But they sure wish the parking situation was better. Who knew!? Nowhere in the slideshow presentation we sat through was there a single original idea. To call it a business plan would be straining our credulity.

Bruce then went on to explain that he did go over Convention Hall’s monies in the first year of operation at his January 23 budget presentation. “Unfortunately, I believe there were three or four people in attendance.” Which we suppose is Bruce’s way of saying: It’s your fault you don’t know things the city tries its damndest to keep you from knowing.

But then… a moment of long overdue acknowledgement. At the bitter end of this meeting, councilmember Jack Wichterman once again broached the subject of the business plan, saying that he agrees the city did not get all that it paid for. What’s more, the guy in charge of the plan wasn’t even in attendance at the presentation last May. Bruce sent an email asking him to return to the city in order to elaborate on Temple’s work, but he never so much as responded to this email.

Wouldn’t this information have been nice to know just one of the times we sat outside of Bruce’s office (because he wouldn’t return our phone calls) so that we could question him about the lack of

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 a plan? Wouldn’t it have been nice to see some acknowledgement from council that there is, in fact, a problem here? Wouldn’t it be nice to know that the people you’ve elected to run our city are in fact capable of acknowledging when things go wrong, and letting us know how they’re taking action to correct them?

But when pressed for answers, our politicians (and officials) would rather ignore the questions, it would seem.

Which brings us to a second point that bothered us about the most recent meeting of council.

Once again, the city is bypassing the resources available here in Cape May, this time by commissioning Seven Mile Publishing in Avalon to produce an information guide. We tried to ask what this information guide will include and why such a project would not have gone to any one of a few qualified local companies. Exit Zero Publishing already produces

a 360-page guide book, Cool Cape May, now distributed to every single hotel, motel, and B&B room across the city. Then there are the folks who publish Cape May magazine, as well as CPW Creative, who produce the chamber’s guide book. All of them, like us, are more than capable of producing high-quality publications.

We figured we’d try to get an answer during the public portion of the meeting, since trying to get answers via phone or email is impossible, but we were told to sit down. Actually, we were told we were out of order by Mayor Mahaney, who banged his little gavel in a fit of petulance.

It’s interesting to us that, in preparing the calendar of events that will go in the front of our Cool Cape May book, which we’ve been publishing since 2005, we encountered problems for the first time this year; the city wasn’t able to provide us with the information about their events, at least not without a great deal of prodding, and several emails sent to the recreation department, the director

of marketing, the mayor, and the city manager. Yet, when we called Jack Wichterman, he told us he’d seen sample pages from the city’s new guide about a week before, leading us to believe that the city did have access to the information we’d been requesting all along.

Jack also told us that he didn’t know about the city’s publication until, also, about a week ago, meaning either Bruce MacLeod commissioned this project, or the mayor did. We’d like to think it was Bruce, since the mayor has no power to make policy decisions on his own, but something tells us this isn’t the case. Whoops... sounds like the Faulkner Act just got breached again.

We emailed all of our questions — why the city even needs to produce another guide book with Cool Cape May put out by us and a visitor’s guide put out by the chamber, and why none of the money needed to do so would stay in this town — but it was ignored by both Bruce and the mayor.

Cycle Service THERE is a bike-o-lution happening on Cape Island, according to Marc Jacopec, who we interviewed a couple of weeks ago for an article on his new bike tour business. And Marc might be on to something. Case in point: Eddie Behrens’ new bike delivery service, Cape Couriers.

Twenty-four-year-old Eddie — a born-and-bred Cape Mayan and the son of legendary Lucky Bones bartender Patty Behrens — told us he’s been sitting on the idea for a couple of years now; he was inspired by the courier service he encountered on a trip to San Francisco. But it was his

Or, in this case, wheels.

“You always read in the Herald’s Spout Off column about parking and traffic in Cape May,” Eddie said. “So this just makes sense. It all comes down to how valuable your time is.”

What will he (on his threespeed bike with large basket) and Matt (on an old 70s condor) deliver to you? Just about anything from food (“A lot of places in town offer takeout but not delivery,” he said) to construction supplies (“Guys on a job might run out of screws or nails and not have time to go to Swain’s”). And where will they deliver it? Anywhere, including the beach. (Far be it from Eddie, an avid surfer who’s been managing Southend Surf Shop for over a decade, to neglect his fellow beach lovers.)

The guys have divided the island into four zones. If what you need only requires travel within one zone, you pay $5. For two

zones, it’s $7; three zones, $9, and four zones — say, from the Coast Guard base to the Red Store — $11. “And, hopefully, a tip as well,” Eddie says. “We want this to be affordable.”

It’s a win-win for businesses, not only because their offerings will become more accessible to visitors not wanting to brave the crowded summer streets, but because they’ll have opportunity to advertise, both within the brochure the couriers will hand off with each delivery, and on the jerseys they’ll sport as they ride through town. Not to mention, on a yet-to-be-launched website.

But what gets us most excited about this — aside from the obvious environmental benefits of less cars on the road — is the fact that so many local people are involved. David Macomber, whose artwork you may have seen on display at Big Wave Burrito, is designing the logo. Sue Lotozo of Flying Fish is printing the jerseys. And Jesse Lampert, whose amazing work showcasing Cape

May we’ve recently posted on the Exit Zero Facebook page, is working on a video. And because it’s doubtful that two guys will be able to handle all of the calls a delivery service in Cape May is sure to get, at least one other courier — Brianna Bovey of George’s — is joining the team. “I’ve noticed over the years what a strong sense of community there is within Cape May,” Eddie told us. “Businesses help out other businesses.”

Appropriately, Cape Couriers will launch on Earth Day, April 22.

From Page 16 now substitutes at Cape May Elementary, made her directorial debut with last year’s The Jungle Book, and this month, her intrepid team of 20 third, fourth, fifth, and sixth graders (though not that many sixth graders, because just being cool at that age is a full-time job) will tackle Annie.

“I’m the lucky one,” Sheila told us. “These students have put in an immense amount of work, and are so enthusiastic.”

Enthusiastic, and grateful for the opportunity to participate. “There are other theatre programs for children, but they are not affordable for everyone,” Sheila said. “One of the wonderful things about Cape May Elementary,” she explained, “is that it serves such a wide crosssection of kids of varying socioeconomic backgrounds.”

Not to mention varying interests. “Aside from helping

them develop important skills like public speaking, drama is an outlet for kids who might not excel at sports or other activities,” Sheila said. “I want them to have the experience of trying something new, succeeding, and feeling good about that.”

3/9: “Anything Goes” Rehearsal At Lower Cape May Regional High

Seventy Lower Cape May Regional High school students have been involved with the production of this year’s musical, Anything Goes, for which they’ve been rehearsing up to four days a week — sometimes all day on Saturdays — since January. “The kids are so enthusiastic,” Producer Lynn Massimiano told us. “We have 19 seniors participating, so this has been a culminating activity for them... a little bittersweet.”

The show, a “high-seas’ romp,” tells the story of some memorable characters — including a debutante, a Wall Street broker, an evangelist turned night club singer, and an overbearing mother — as they encounter Public Enemy #13, among other complications, aboard the SS American. Tickets for the performances, happening March 14 through March 16 at 7pm and March 17 at 2pm, are $10 and available at the door. The show is produced by Paul J. Mathis and Lynn Massimiano and directed by John K. Alvarez in cooperation with Tams Witmark Music Library, New York.

3/2: Benefit For The Veneziale Family At The Villas Fishing Club

«

Phil Veneziale, who suffered a fatal heart attack in December, was a member of the Villas Fishing Club and the Knights of Columbus, and he did writing and sound work for the Spirit Players of St. John Neumann. But one of his greatest passions was serving as Head Trustee and bartender for the Greater Cape May Elks. “He was a Philadelphia transplant,” fellow Elks officer Barbara Mahon told us. “He found the area very charming, and he was so involved. He helped open the lodge that the Elks are now in; previously, we’d been meeting in the dining room of a nursing home. When we got a lease in the Villas, any kind of maintenance that needed be done, he was there to help. He was taken from us too suddenly.”

Barabara co-chaired this event — which helped raise money to offset some of the current medical bills of Phil’s widow, Barbara Veneziale — with one of Phil’s three sons, Phil Junior. Five hundred tickets were sold, and a string band performed, which Phil, a former Mummer, would have loved. Along with his family, including all seven grandchildren, the Elks and the Mummers were his greatest loves.

The Movie Column

This week, Arts Editor Tom Sims reviews “Quartet”

HE premise is charming, the actors are legendary, and the extras are icons. Quartet is the story of a retirement home for musicians, which just by itself is charming enough. The home has an annual concert celebrating Verdi’s birthday, and this year was going as planned — until the diva Jean Horton showed up. Not your typical diva, this retired singer (played by Downton Abbey’s Maggie Smith) has had a long life of exceptional stardom. She also happens to be the ex-wife of another resident, Reginald Paget (played by Tom Courtenay).

Dustin Hoffman directed the film, his first “credited” director project. He started directing a film in which he starred in 1978 (called Straight Time) but he could not complete the project and asked another director to take over. And despite thinking that he must be a young buck compared to some of the veteran entertainers in this film, he’s actually one of their peers when you stop to look at all of their birthdays!

Maggie Smith and Dustin Hoffmann, who directs her in Quartet Apart from these celebrities, there are dozens of others in the music world who are worth seeing in this film. They are all brilliantly talented, and to have a vehicle like this to showcase them is a true honor. The film may not be Oscar material — the storyline is a bit frail in parts, and its character development rarely rises above stereotype — but there are poignant moments enough, and just watching this powerhouse of enter-

tainment makes the film more a tribute than a blockbuster.

Oh and let’s not confuse Billy Connolly with John Cleese (as I did throughout the film and even as I was preparing notes for this article). Connolly plays a retired musician who as a “player” is anything but retired. His lines are somewhat formulaic and cliché — of course when I thought Connolly was Cleese, his lines were charming and insightful.

I’m on safe ground recommending that you wait for Quartet on DVD and that it is probably best appreciated by anyone who follows live theater and has done so for many years. This film may not be one of the best to come from BBC Films, but it is certainly an honor to see such talent showcased.

NTERNET Sensation of the Week: Me! On the great comic book roundtable podcast called PopTards (“tard” is short for “tardy”, so put away your protest signs), I recently emailed the hosts defending those of us who were annoyed that Bryan Singer, in his D.O.A. film Superman Returns, changed “Turth, justice and the American way” to “Truth, justice… and all that stuff”, altering the motto that millions of Americans grew up with. We were referred to as “f***ing d*****bags” by the host, who gave the false argument that if you want a movie to do well overseas, you can’t mention America because everyone hates us.

Why is this false? Because every single Bush-era anti-war/anti-American movie (made by Americans! Yay!) flopped worldwide (In The Valley of Elah, Lions For Lambs, Redacted, and a dozen others) while patriotic and/or conservative films (the Batman trilogy, Iron Man I & II, The Avengers, Capt. Freakin’ America) did very, very well. What followed was a passionate yet reasonable discourse (because no liberals got involved) and lo and behold on their next podcast they mentioned

me by name. It’s been a long time since I was a comic book geek… it might be time to become one again. With great geekdom comes great responsibility.

I am steeped in 70s and 80s Marvel and DC lore, back when Captain America ran for president, and before there were 14 Batman comics and Wolverine was more popular then Jeebus. but good googly-moogly… Terry O’ke Friday nights have been off the chain (do the kids still say that?). The average decent karaoke night rotates 10-12 singers. This winter I’ve been averaging 18-20. Tami Marks and Sean Haggerty do a tremendous job keeping everyone happy at the bar, while April Dinardo spends 4 hours scurrying around serving food and beverage. Which makes me the least popular guy in the room. “When’s my turn?”

“Can you make it louder?” “I can’t believe you don’t have that Chinese black market version of that Michael Bolton song I love to sing!”

“HEY! She went after me last time!” The more pissed off they get, the better night I know I’m having. Good times, good times…

Butt-Dials of the Week: First one came from Al Olivero of Love Me Dudes fame. The next came from Terry Dougherty of… Love Me Dudes fame. Hmmm… perhaps their asses are missing all that sweet, sweet Beatles love we used to make. Or it’s their asses telling me to get my ass in gear and book another Beatles show. Either way, their asses sure are sweet talkers. Could use a breath mint, though.

The Undertow ? From Page 35 Mystery Solved of the Week: I’ve had many people ask and just as many people guess what’s going in the Rite-Aid that used to be in Eckerd in the lot that used to have a Thriftway in North Cape May. Turns out it’s going to be a dialysis center. Which is good.

Because it’s so close they can probably run an extension cord to my kidney.

Awesome Parenting of the Week: By me! My baby, 7-year-old Henry, has taken to complaining about an upset tummy just as we arrive at school in the morning. This worked the first few times he pulled it, earning him a day on the couch and hours of Wii. But I soon grew wise to his little racket, which is why this week when he complained I told him, “Nuh-uh, buster. Not this time.” Henry then came home and had diarrhea. Explosively.

For two days. Hey… if he hadn’t boy-who-cried-wolfed me for six months this never would have happened! So really, it’s his fault.

Speaking of Henry, I had an awesome time coaching his basketball team again this year.

Henry, Macie Murphy, Tommy Sluk, Anderson Ryan, Jayden Foltz, Trina Frey, Mario Catanoso, Lily Vogel, Thomas Williamson and Brent Reidenbach were the ’83 Sixers of the Lower Township Recreation League. I hope to do it again next year.

Saw “Jack the Giant Slayer” with the brood last weekend. I give it a solid B. It’s a little much for the under-10 set (lots of people get eaten). The story is solid enough, though it does feel a little like director Bryan Singer threw some Lord of the Rings, Hansel & Gretel, Abraham Lincoln and Snow White in a blender and made a Fairy Tale Smoothie, which is not entirely a bad thing.

Happy Birthday To Me of the Week: To me! (It’s a very mecentric column this week, isn’t it? So unlike every other week…)

I turned 43 last Thursday. The over/under was 42.5, so pay up, suckers! You may leave my gifts as Exit Zero HQ in West Cape May. Keep perishables away from Jack Wright.

Speaking of fat asses, I’ve been hauling mine into North Beach Health Club in the Acme Shopping Center in North Cape May for about a week now, and I’ve lost 75 pounds I kid, I kid… it’s more like .75 pounds. But the journey of 1,000 miles begins with but a single step. My personal trainer Mark Chamberlain (who must have lost a bet) has me on a regimen of stretching and ab work, followed by the Tabatta Method on the treadmill; run for 20 seconds as fast as you can, rest for 10, repeat til you throw up. I was always more of a slow-andsteady kind of guy on the treadmill, but then I’m 230 pounds.

So clearly my way wasn’t working and, after 43 years, probably wasn’t going to start working any time soon. So Mark, I am putty in your hands.

On the off-chance Acoustic Mayhem is playing the Rio Station tonight (unknown at press time) come check us out! If we’re not, go anyway and support local live music.

We’re about two weeks out from Billy Joel Night, Wildwood (Saturday the 30th at the Anglesea Pub, 8:30pm) and I’m starting to get a little excited. I’d love to see some of you Cape May folks there that so vigorously supported Beatles Night I&II, but am resigned to the fact that if you put a bridge between the Ugly Mug and Pilot House that nobody would go to either.

Good morning, kids! (Insert semi-annoying, semi-obscure pop hit that makes me seem cool here.) Kate, your shirt is still in my car, and now smells like smoke and karaoke.

Lastly this week, by the time you read this I will be back to work full-time at Morey’s as we ramp up for the 2013 season.

Hard to believe this will mark the 4th years since I left Cape May for Wildwood because Jack wouldn’t pay me enough. I mean, can you really put a price tag on my contributions? ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

EATH has been on my mind, lately. At my age (which I will not disclose, but it is well into three figures) one gets used to not seeing old friends for a while, then seeing their name in f lowers on a passing hearse and realizing that one will not be seeing that backgammon debt repaid any time soon. Also, Cape May’s secret Fountain of Youth has dried up, leaving the “Cape May Immortals” with a dilemma: unless we sup of the liquid on an annual basis our true age will return over night, and that would be both embarrassing and unsightly. Of course I took the precaution of bottling some emergency supplies and those are under lock and key (and some other more lethal measures) in the wine cellar, but those will only last 357 years.

Anyway, I need to update my will: you lot will of course be taken care of, and indeed many of you will get what is coming to you. Some may even get what they desire.

But also, I need my own arrangements to be made, in the event of sudden death. (This is not, I admit, likely, given my impervious-

ness to edged weapons and bullets, and my hard-won immunity to most poisons).

The modest procession is all booked: nothing, fancy, just 500 Lipizzaner stallions pulling a 1:1 scale model of the Sphinx that Cleopatra greeted Anthony on, and 30,000 professional mourners tearing their clothes and scratching their faces. Plus all of you will be required to attend, upon penalty of being cut out of my will/added to my “anti-will” (this is sort of like the traditional will, where good things are shared out, except the opposite: a pot of $10m has

been set aside to wreak vengeance on those who have wronged me/defied me/irritated me in passing over the years).

After that, I have something special planned: I will be compressed in a specially made vice to a pressure of 400,000lbs per square inch, at which point I will become a gem of unsurpassed quality. This stone — the D’Catur Diamond — will then be hidden somewhere in the city limits and a treasure hunt will commence. Given the value of yours truly when deceased and squashed will be in the region of $100m, I expect interest to be considerable.

Of course, nothing worth having is without risk, as the late lamented Ma D’Catur used to say genially before thrashing her children with a leather belt for daring to ask for seconds of tripe at dinner, and there will be some red herrings along the way that will lead the unwary/undeserving not to a diamond but to a carefully concealed anti-personnel mine/gigantic rolling stone ball/cage full of frenzied Wildwooders. You will, I fancy, hear my ghostly laughter in the wind.

Here’s To Your Health

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

OOD scientists spend their time in their laboratories trying to, (among other things) find your Bliss Point — the perfect combination of salt, sugar and fat that will cause your brain to release endorphins.

Endorphins are chemicals that work on the same neuronal receptors as opiate drugs.

A book was released last week by New York Times writer Michael Moss dealing with just this topic — it’s called Salt, Sugar, Fat: How the Food Giants Hook Us. Processed foods are the culprit — the foods you couldn’t easily replicate in your own kitchen. They are the furthest away from whole grains, nuts, fruits, vegetables and unadulterated beef, chicken, fish and eggs. Hamburger Helper, for instance.

The food industry claims there is no addictive quality to any foods, that it’s simply a matter of self-control and that people vote with their tastebuds. They say their business is providing fast cooking, goodtasting food with basic nutritional components. It’s a simplistic argument and begs a lot of questions. I’m not saying people

don’t have a responsibility to take care of themselves but studies with mice (the rats weren’t available — they were busy smoking cigarettes in another lab), showed that they would work as hard to get a mixture of sugar and corn oil as they would to get cocaine.

Sugar is showing up in lots of foods you wouldn’t expect — tomato sauce, ketchup, frozen chicken dinners, bread, frozen vegetables. I try to buy organic and even those products need to be scrutinized for added sugar. Whenever something is being hailed as low-fat, check for increased sugar and/ or salt. The flavor has to be enhanced some-

how or you may not buy it. Fruit juice usually isn’t just juice. It’s often a cocktail, or made from concentrate with sugar added.

Why do we need more sugar in an already very sweet liquid? Researchers found that drug addicts need increasing amounts of the same drug just to reach the desired affect that a small amount used to give them. It’s the same thing they have found with sugar.

They do believe that many people become sugar addicted and can’t seem to satisfy that desire. One krimpet at school has become a box at home. And if we adults have a problem “just saying no” to sugar, fat and salt, what chance does a kid have? Childhood obesity is triple what it was in 1963 according to The American Heart Association.

Since listening to Michael Moss’s interview on the radio last week I’ve been very conscious of my sugar intake. I’ve dropped it down to a small fraction of what it was and I realized how difficult it is to avoid.

I’m not saying we should all give up eating processed foods. But we need as a society start coming to grips with the problem.

We’re literally coming apart at the seams.

Last month, Cape May Elementary students got up close with some of the wonders of the ocean and the need to protect them. The Wetlands Institute provided a touch tank complete with a live horseshoe crab, children displayed their art and science projects related to marine life, and three children’s book authors read works about sea life and the natural world. Our favorite part?

The giant pile of trash in the center of the room, representing the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Jill Simcox — mother of 10-year-old Abigail and seven-year-old Jacob — was one of the parents in attendance. “The festival introduces kids to the importance of being green, and makes them aware of some of the products we use daily that are very harmful and not necessary,” she told us. Plus, it sparks their interest in engineering... Abigail was one of the students who built an ROV — or remotely operated underwater vehicle that’s commonly used in the study of the ocean — which was on display in the school’s pool!

HE SMELL of spring is mixing with snowflakes in the air, and that means the songbirds are coming back to Cape May. Singer Songwriter Cape May returns to town on March 22 and 23.

Songbirds aren’t the only animals who sing — there are frogs, whales, rodents and bugs who croon for communication and courting — the same reasons humans sing.

As a bonus, singing is good for your health because it improves lung capacity, posture, and mood. Sing to your baby and you “prepare” her brain for language more effectively than flashcards and early reading programs; sing with your grandmother to boost her energy and concentration.

At Singer Songwriter Cape May, you can sing along with the hundreds of talented musicians who will be here for the 6th Annual Singer Songwriter Cape May. The artists will spend two days dealing with the business of music at Congress Hall, with sessions on the creative elements, like writing and recording.

On the business side, sessions will address issues like licensing, marketing, and copy-

Featured performers Tracy Grammer and Ellis Paul will present keynote addresses followed by performances on Friday and Saturday evening. Both are singer-songwriters who defy easy categorization.

Ms. Grammer, who plays multiple instruments, seems to combine old-style country music with modern alternative rock. Mr. Paul’s music is folk rock with an urban feel.

After the keynotes, the artists spread out for showcase performances at fifteen venues all over town. One returning artist is Chris Kudela, who will play Friday night at the C-View Inn. Kudela, of Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania, is a solo artist who writes original music for “lovers, losers and everyone in between”. Kudela’s new full-length CD entitled “Cottaret” will be out later this year - find out more about his music at reverbnation/ chriskudela.com.

The showcase performances are free and open to the public. Other venues include Aleathea’s, the Boiler Room, the Brown Room, Cabana’s, Carney’s, the Corinthian Yacht Club, Elaine’s, Jackson Mountain Cafe, Lucky Bones, the Mad Batter, Marq’s Pub, Martini Beach, Merion Inn, Pilot House and the Ugly Mug. Bird Droppings

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

HIS column is a kudos to the tough ones. The hardy ones. The ones who made it. Three Great Blue Herons. One Belted Kingfisher. One Marsh Wren. Last November there were lots of herons. Three to four kingfishers. And a clutch of five or eight wrens close to my home.

Now we’re down to five survivors. The rest? Oh, they’re dead. Winter, you understand. Natural selection, you know. It wasn’t a particularly severe winter. Not much snow.

Only a couple of periods of prolonged freezing temperatures. But it was tough enough to whittle down the ranks of these species and many more.

The fact is I have no way of determining how many birds didn’t survive the winter. I can only tell you that these tough few made it. I know because I encountered them early in March which is too early for these species to have migrated in from farther south.

Besides. I got to see (or hear) them nearly every day.

So why you might be thinking, didn’t all

those birds that didn’t make it just go farther south? Good question. As events have proven, they probably should have. But just going farther south to more temperate climates doesn’t guarantee success. There’s risk involved in this decision, too.

Consider! The farther south you go, the farther you have to fly. It means more energy expended. It means more uncertainty.

There’s no guarantee you’ll find anyplace as inviting as, say, that stretch of salt marsh in southern New Jersey. There’s a high probability that you are going to encounter more competition because more of your species do head farther south than remain this far north.

And don’t forget, what goes down must come up. The farther north you remain, the closer you are to good breeding areas. By starting your return flight closer to the finish line, you get a wing up on the competition. Get the best breeding site. Get the girl or guy. Providing you survive the winter, of course.

So last December, there were more than twenty Great Blue Herons in and about the area where I do my morning walk. There was plenty of food. Lots of open water. Then, wham, freezing temperatures and ice.

Herons are fish eating birds, more accurately fish stabbing birds. Fish under ice are immune to stabbing bills. So as fishing holes

Bird Droppings ? From Page 75 froze over, more and more birds vied for the few that remained open. Herons, with limited supplies, are not prone to share. The end result? By March, only three super-achieving Great Blue Herons were left.

Kingfishers? Same deal. Kingfishers, as the name implies, eat fish too. In fact, in January, I observed a kingfisher and a Great Blue Heron nearly side by side in the same slushy patch of water. The kingfisher was perched on a branch, of course. Kingfishers are diving birds. As for the wrens...

Marsh Wrens spend the winter creeping through the rank weed, searching for food. Thirty years ago it would have been rare for Marsh Wren to winter in New Jersey. Now it’s fairly common. In this age of global warming, the trend is for these and other “half hardy” winter residents to push the envelope, and try to winter farther north.

For some birds, in some years, the strategy succeeds. So here’s to the winners, the tough ones that made it through the winter.

Is there a prize? Sure. The right to pass the Right Stuff on to the next generation. In the game that really counts, it’s the grand prize.

This Great Blue Heron is starting to wish he flew south for the winter Luckily, we had it easy this winter and didn’t have to rely on good genes to survive.

Now that we are clearing out the winter doldrums, it’s time to start looking forward to spring and that means warmer weather. You no longer have to look like the Michelin Man to go out birding.

Thirty-five close friends waited at Hemingway’s for Bobby Wilson to arrive to what he thought was going to be just another weekend dinner... a little tradition between he and his fishermen buddies. “He was definitely shocked,” one guest told us... “and he’s not an easy guy to surprise.”

When we asked Shawn Clark, who organized the party with girlfriend Marilyn Clifford, what kind of guy Bobby is, he said: “He has the biggest heart of anyone I’ve ever met. He’s non-pretentious and loyal. More human beings should be like him.” Another friend, Leo Smith, said “Bobby would give you the shirt off of his back.
