3/30: Easter Egg Hunt The Kiwanis Club of Cape May will sponsor the annual Easter Egg Hunt, in conjunction with the City of Cape May, at 10 am on the grounds of the Cape May Elementary School playground.

There will be two categories, preschool to kindergarten and 1st to 2nd grade. Special prizes will be awarded to finders of the “golden eggs”. Call the Cape May City Department of Tourism, Recreation and Civic Affairs at 609-884-9565.

3/30: Volunteers in Medicine’s First Annual 5K Health Run The focus of Volunteers In Medicine is on primary health care, emphasizing disease prevention, health promotion and patient education in an easily accessible facility with the same dignity and confidentiality afforded in the private sector. This 5k run and two-mile Walk for Easter will take place at the Cape May Park and Zoo. Registration begins at 7:30am. One hundred percent of the proceeds will stay in Cape May County and go direct to patient care.

3/30: Easter Egg Hunt Cabanas is hosting this event, complete with a visit from the Easter Bunny and facepainting, from 12-4pm.

3/31: Children’s Trolley Ride Board MAC’s quaint red trolley for a guided tour of Cape May’s Historic District, geared specially for children. 11:30am. $7. Call 609-884-5404.

We called event organizer John Harris who told us the reason this festival has been such a success in Cape May is that you couldn’t have a better setting.

“The community is very responsive to live music here,” he said. “The musicians learn about Cape May and its history, and that only enhances their experiences. They beg to come back the following year.”

The Day The Earth Moved DID you experience that shaking of the earth last Monday? It was felt throughout Cape May and Atlantic Counties, according to NBC 40’s Chief Meterologist Dan Skeldon, who alerted the social media world that this was not, in fact, an earthquake. So what was it? Dan speculates the shaking may have been the result of military aircraft exercises.

Our own Terry O’Brien says not to worry... it was just him on the treadmill.

Floodgate Update WE WERE glad to see other publications recently report on the Convention Hall flood insurance saga, even though they sure took their time — we first wrote about Floodgate in November.

And we were glad to see that the city of Cape May is investigating whether it can seek damages from companies involved with the construction of the $10.5 million building.

It’s been obvious for quite some time that someone screwed up here — the question is, whodunnit?

The fact that the city may be in a position to mitigate the financial damage this debacle could wreak upon its taxpayers is the first piece of good news we’ve had in this story.

If this is your first time to this publication, or you’ve had your head in the sand for a while, here’s

the brief background: Convention Hall never had flood insurance when Hurricane Sandy rolled into town on October 31. Which was bad enough. To compound that, it then became apparent that there might be a problem with the elevation of the new building — that it might not meet FEMA criteria and would, therefore, fail to qualify for the most cost-effective insurance premiums.

We’ve accused the city of trying to cover up this issue — no doubt they were embarrassed by this turn of affairs. Who wouldn’t be? And even though the rest of the press were very quiet on this issue until last week, a group of very motivated citizens from the east end of town have been riding the city hard.

It was one of the members of this group, Charlie Hendricks, who blew the whistle and revealed the lack of flood insurance last November. And Charlie was front

and center last week when his group released a very detailed letter claiming that, even though the city now had three separate insurance policies on the building, that the coverage was likely not going to be enough to cover the costs of replacing the building in the event of a catastrophic storm.

We were impressed by the detail in the letter, which was jointly authored by Charlie, along with Jim Testa, a lawyer, and former mayor Jerry Gaffney and Kevin Soler, who are both insurance industry veterans.

And so, apparently was Cape May mayor, Ed Mahaney. The relationship between the city’s administration and the East End Four (it’s a snappier name than “a group of concerned citizens”) has been fractious to say the least, but Mayor Mahaney was in conciliatory mood when we caught up

“The city very much appreciates the diligence of the four citizens who forwarded their concerns about the insurance policies for Convention Hall,” he told us.

“I want to acknowledge their commitment and dedication to the city of Cape May. The city, and myself especially, believe these findings are worth researching.

These gentlemen have a lot of expertise and experience in various fields. Between what we had already laid out and what we got from these four citizens we have as comprehensive an examination of these policies as possible.

“We have incorporated their findings and, along with additional inquiries we have made, we will then ask for feeback from our insurance consultants and we hope to hear their initial findings by the end of the week.”

We’re sensing a mood swing in City Hall, a realization that the

regular battles (between the city and certain groups of citizens, as well as with this publication) that have been ongoing for much of Mayor Mahaney’s previous four years in office only hurt the city.

Our hope? That whoever messed up the construction of Convention Hall (and it does not seem to be a straightforward matter) coughs up so that the taxpayers do not have to. And also... that we get to use more ink on positive Cape May stories, such as the Singer Songwriter event which happened last weekend and which adds a wonderful burst of energy to the city at a time of year when it’s a leetle too quiet around here.

Go, GABLES, Go THIS issue was sent to the printer the night before the Supreme Court heard oral arguments against California’s Proposition 8, and two days before the Supreme Court heard a challenge to the federal Defense of Marriage Act. So it might seem like

a timely decision to include an article this week about the work of GABLES of Cape May County, the nonprofit organization that advocates for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons. But the truth is, there isn’t really a non-timely moment to write about GABLES, as they are always (and we mean always) working to better the lives of all (and we mean all) people — gay, straight, old, young, tall, short, nice, grumpy, you get the idea — in our area. They call themselves the gay group doing good things for the entire community, and their upcoming event — the Sixth Annual Diversity Weekend, which will bring nationally-renowned performers to Cape May — is just one example of this.

We called Doreen Talley, the group’s Outreach Officer, for some background on the history of GABLES. It was founded 18 years ago, and the accomplishments since — including over $100,000 donated to charitable

Which is why GABLES is bringing magician/illusionist Eric Walton, plus two comedians to Marq’s Pub on April 6 for Diversity Weekend’s Bait and Swish: Trolling for More. We asked headliner Thai Rivera — you might recognize him from Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham — why the show is called Bait and Swish, and he said he wasn’t too sure (though, who knows if he was being serious… you never can tell with these comedians). But he was able to tell us what we can expect from him: a stand-up show that’s “edgy, not at all politically correct, and a lot of fun.”

A lot of fun, whether you’re gay, straight or somewhere in between.

The evening’s host and fellow comedian, Poppy Champlin (whom you may have seen on Oprah, her own Showtime Special called Pride, Entertainment Tonight or The Joan Rivers Show) told us that while she is gay, and excited there are groups like GABLES

working to give the gay community a voice, “this is going to be a great night for anyone from 18 to 75 who can breathe and listen.”

She also told us that, while she’s thrilled for the chance to bring her off-the-cuff style of stand-up to Cape May, she’s equally excited to “experience and play in Cape May.” (See? More proof for any of you doubters out there that we really are all the same.)

Honey, It’s Home EVERY year, more people realize that West Cape May isn’t simply the little sister to Cape May proper. The last 12 months have seen the opening of Sunset Liquor, the expansion of the Exit Zero Store, and another hugely successful series of farmer’s mar-

kets and festivals. Now comes another feather in the town’s cap: the opening of Cape May Honey Farm on Sunset Boulevard, in the former site of the Wooden Village Teak Outlet. “We’re seeing just how many people come this way,” owner Doug Marandino told us.

This area is growing, and we’re glad to contribute.”

Doug’s interest in beekeeping grew out of a trip to Bulgaria, where he witnessed the family and friends of his wife Andi working on their own hives. Eventually, the couple decided Cape May would be the ideal place to harvest their own honey. To begin with, they’re already familiar with the area (Doug helps make coffee beans for Cape May Roasters and has worked as the Washington Inn sous chef for 20 years, while Andi served as their catering consultant), but even more than that, it just feels right. “It’s a really laidback and family-friendly town,” Andi said. “Also, a lot of the tour-

Which means this business should be right up their alley.

“Honey can be used for everything,” Doug said. “It has antiseptic and antibacterial properties, antioxidants, minerals, proteins, and vitamins.

Eating local honey even helps to calm allergies. People don’t understand how important honeybees are, or that their numbers have been decreasing. We want to educate the community on the importance of this.”

Stop in and chat with the Marandinos, and you will get an education… we learned just how complex a hive can be. “All people associate with bees is that they sting and make honey,” Andi told us. “But what goes on inside the hive, how the honeycomb is built, how the bees communicate... it’s

all very complicated. Whenever Doug starts talking about all that, people forget about the stinging.”

Of course, we couldn’t help but ask about that, too. “It’s only happened about eight times,” Doug said. “Every time I’ve been stung it’s been my own fault.

Maybe I put my hand in the wrong place or I somehow made the bee feel threatened… If you’re slow and careful in how you handle the hive, you won’t get stung.”

We also learned just how diverse the offerings at Honey Farm will be. “If it comes from a hive, it’ll be in the store,” Doug said. “In addition to the local honey from my hives, we’ll be bringing in imported and rare honeys from other countries as well as from different parts of America. This store is going to be the honey and beehive products Mecca. That’s our goal.”

The Honey Farm will open for business on weekends beginning March 28, before opening full time in May. It’s a great place to take your honey…

3/17: St. Patrick’s Day Party For The Lutheran Church Men’s Group

“No officers, no dues, just a group of guys who like to get together and have a good time.”

That’s how Maurice Hight describes the Men’s Group of Cape May Lutheran Church... a group which plans all sorts of fun things, like this St. Patrick’s Day party at Lucky Bones.

Recently, they also went to the Cape May Coast Guard Fire Station to have lunch in the mess hall and learn about how this station coordinates with those of other towns during an emergency. And they listened to Bob Heinly (the guy who plays Emlen Physick) explain at the Lookout Tower the role of Cape May in World War II. EEN a busy, exciting, terrifying week here at Undertow Central.

But let’s first get to the watching-paint-dry part... I’ve spent a lot of time this month painting the boarding houses that Morey’s Piers maintains for their international student employees. And painting floors gives a man A LOT of alone time. Some observations...

Every business that advertises on 98.7 The Coast is “world famous” for something.

Some of this I buy (Fudge Kitchen makes amazing candy, Rio Station crab cakes really are that good), most of it is pure hooey.

Hemingway’s in the Grand Hotel apparently has a pretty famous (though not “world famous”) crab buffet. I would like to believe this, but I require proof. So, I guess Hemingway’s will just have to, you know, invite me in there to eat a bunch of crabs and stuff. My readers demand the truth!

Pit Bull and Bruno Mars need to take a very long vacation. Ideally together. Ideally on one of those Princess Cruise ships that

keep getting stranded.

I created my own unit-of-paint measurement: a glop covers a small-to-medium area; a gloop is a fairly large area; and a full gloop is when you just dip the whole roller and go to town. It’s all very technical.

I have learned it is quite the notch on one’s belt to scare the Ghost Ship guy. I now live in a state of mortal terror at work.

There’s more, but it’s all pretty twisted.

Alone with my thoughts is a scary place to be.

Rio Station open mic Thursday is developing into quite the cool little show. I’m there with either Will Knapp (Ding!) or Bill Caterini. It’s interesting playing regular gigs with two different guitarists, each with his own musical personality and style… I’m just afraid of calling out the wrong name in bed.

Cape May County Open Mic All-Star Mikey Vengeance (aka Mike Alimo, one of my Ghost Ship zombie crew) played his melancholic brand of acoustic mope. (NOT an insult.) Joe Oswald (Elaine’s) made his live stage debut with two originals and somehow managed not to vomit during either of them. And Sean Eisele, the most polished of the bunch, played several covers (including the Beatles, the fastest way to my heart) and

I did not find out until deep into the evening that Sean Eisele was performing for the first time after battling a serious illness. I did not wish to pry, but heard the word “chemotherapy” a few times. And all I can say that’s pretty freakin’ awesome.

Thanks for choosing to share the stage with us, Sean. You will always be welcome.

Last chance to tell you about Billy Joel Night at the Anglesea Pub this Saturday. The show starts at 8:30, but get there early to carve out a spot; it’s going to fill up quick. Beyond that I can’t say much more; the band is awesome, the songs are awesome, the night is going to be awesome and I’d hate for you to miss it.

Department of Things I Never Do: Usually when all these cool little festival weekends hit Cape May I sit at home and mope that I can’t attend for this reason or that (“this” being I’m too tired, “that” being I’m too old and/or lazy), but last weekend I decided to break down that wall and catch some Singer-Songwriter Cape May action. First I hit Cabanas to catch Monswoon, featuring my boy Sean Haggerty on drums.

I think it’s fair to compare them to My Morning Jacket (mildly trippy, slightly psychedelic), but I don’t wish to offend anyone. Not intentionally, anyway.

Sean is one of those really annoying people who is good at drums, good at guitar, and is a strong singer. I love him. But I also hate him a little bit.

I then headed upstairs to Martini Beach and caught a set

by Annalise Emerick, a Nashville native, who reminded me of Aimee Mann, but a little folkier. Unfortunately for her, the 11 o’clock band downstairs was heavy on the bass and the drums and the screaming. It was

like Natalie Merchant backed by Metallica. Still, her music was excellent. “You Win”, a paean to “Music City”, was a standout.

Then I headed back downstairs to see “Behind the Beautiful”, Jon Katity’s original side project he plays with the three hours and 25 minutes a week he’s not fronting Stellar Mojo.

And at right around midnight I headed down to Exit Zero Global HQ for a secret midnight jam session, headed up by Avi Wisnia, an artist out of Delaware who was joined by about 93% of the Singer-Songwriter population. But alas! They had no sound system! Lucky for them I happen to drive around with one in my van, because you just never know when an open mic jam session might break out. “In Case of Music: Break Glass.”

The music and vibe were quite excellent, and it was nice to feel a part of something special, which this truly was. This afterhours party needs to be an annual event, but this writer needs to get home before 4am. So, Exit Zero?

Buy yourself a nice PA system and stick in the closet. I’ll even teach you how to use it... after somebody teaches me how to use it. Kudos to all involved.

Lastly this week, I lack the words to truly express the pride, panic, terror and exhilaration I feel upon being chosen to head up The Wild Times; an Exit Zerotype magazine being launched this summer, entirely local to the Wildwood boardwalk area, as EZ is to Cape May. Less than 12 hours after texting the idea to Jack Wright, we were pitching Morey’s honcho Jack Morey in his office. Jack, a bright, innovative guy, bought in pretty quick.

And within two days it was all in motion, with me at the (gulp!) helm. We hope to bring the same brand of EZ snark, bite and humor to the Wildwood boardwalk, and invite you to take the journey with us. Especially if you’ll buy an ad… ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

LOWER Cape May Regional High School senior Jill Vandermark made the game-winning shot in the last six seconds of the last varsity girls’ basketball game of the regular season. This extraordinary student also plays field hockey and softball and takes part in many other extracurricular activites, including LCMR’s chapter of National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, and Medical Explorers.

After hitting the game-winning shot, Jill said that she was very excited: “I didn’t expect it to go in, honestly.” Jill’s favorite sport is field hockey, and she hopes to continue to play it at the college level. She has applied to Rowan University and West Chester University, and she was recently accepted into Arcadia University. While she has yet to make a decision as to which school she will attend, she plans to be a high school teacher.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ET NO-ONE say we D’Caturs are not fast to embrace the modern age. Oh, I admit we refused to entertain the idea of the internal combustion engine for a good 10 years after its widespread use in the automobile, but that was mostly because of my feud with that moron Henry Ford, and I had him barred from The Brown Room.

And my refusal to allow a computer into the house until it had first been blessed

by Father McKay (and not until I ensured my faithful Manservant Kitchener held a loaded Colt 45 to its screen the whole time it was connected to the power, in case it tried to hypnotize me with f lashing lights as part of a plan to take over the world) might perhaps have been taken as the actions of a Luddite. But really, I am what might be termed as a cautiously early adopter.

So I have decided that air conditioning will for the very first time ever be installed in the D’Catur Mansion. I have no complaint with the current system of bamboo fans in ever room, linked with over three

miles of silk thread connected to a team of 20 burly topless men in the basement, who each pull on 100 such threads to ensure a breeze ceaselessly comes in across the greenhouses and fragrant f lower beds on the Western lawn, wafting the scent of tomatoes, roses and a particularly rare and notoriously narcotic poppy throughout the household in summertime.

Nor was I unhappy with the annual delivery of a small iceberg by tugboat, which was then trundled through the city on a low loader truck, with myself on the

top with a pickaxe and shovel showering the sweating masses with clouds of ice chips en route to the Mansion.

But times change and with the imminent collapse of civilization as we know it, and the inevitable rising-up of the oppressed masses, I think it unwise to have scores of burly would-be revolutionaries in my own basement, and do not wish my extrovert iceberg procession to be mistaken for the showboating tomfoolery of a bloated plutocrat.

So we are taking delivery of electrically powered units that the salesman assured me will silently reduce the temperature of the house so fast that I will need a servant on hand right by the off-switch to turn it off before we all f lash-freeze. They will be powered by the new solar panels on the roof and the wind turbine in the garden. And also from the miniature cold fusion reactor in the basement, a small project I have been working on to ensure humankind will have access to free clean energy, and so we will be able to develop our own nuclear deterrent for when Wildwood invades.

The John Byrne Band — the same group that’s played for Bill Clinton and former Prime Minister Tony Blair at Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center — graced the Boiler Room stage on Saturday of St. Patrick’s Day weekend... only a day after playing to a crowd of 500 at Philly’s renowned World Café Live. John Byrne, a Dublin native known for his “happy alchemy of American country, blues and Irish folk songs” told us what a nice change of pace it is for his band to visit Cape May. “We play a lot of gigs around St. Patrick’s Day,” he said. “And a lot of these events can be big drinking festivals more than shows, so it’s such a nice feeling to step back from some of the madness and play in Cape May. This is one of those gigs that’s a real treat for musicians.”

The John Byrne Band has also played at the Cape May Brewing Company and previous Singer Songwriter Cape May festivals. “And we’re planning on returning to the Boiler Room for next year’s St. Paddy’s celebration,” he said.

The prizes given away at the silent auction which took place at this St. Patrick’s Day shindig? $3,000 worth, according to Luke Dillon, Deputy Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus #6202, who organized the event for the fourth year in a row. “Restaurants, shops on the mall, so many businesses in town were so generous,” he told us. Making the day extra special? There was the food (corned beef and cabbage, ham, Irish soda bread), and the entertainment. Dancers from the Gibson School of Irish Dance, based in Sea Isle, as well as eighth graders from Cape Trinity Catholic School in Wildwood broke it down Celtic style for the 170 people in attendance.

Here’s To Your Health

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

L

IFE lived with a gusto is a contact sport. Injuries are part of the game. I remember the first time I was injured, in a high school wrestling tournament. My knee hyperextended and I had to forfeit the match. The treatment was ice and more ice. The recovery was fast and I was back to form in days, but something had changed. I started worrying about getting injured again. Wrestling took a toll on my knees and they started making a crunching noise when I went up or down stairs. I looked at it as the price I had to pay for being an athlete. But I soon learned that the body is resilient and, with the right training, can heal old wounds.

Two of the most common complaints I hear at the gym concern lower back and knee pain. (“Could you please tell Terry O’Brien the Richard Simmons shorts have to go” is a close third.) Lower back pain accounts for billions in lost work hours. Seeing a physical therapist or chiropractor is always a solid first move and I recommend it for a lot of people. Chiropractors come in many flavors. Some use machines to align the spine, some use electro-stimulation

to relax muscle tissue and others practice a strict form called Straight Chiropractic in which they only manipulate the spine. If you’re a weight-lifter find one that does weight training; a runner should see someone who runs.

This way they can relate to your symptoms in a more immediate fashion. Good news: this area has a number of excellent practitioners.

Physical therapists are often misunderstood. Their methods are slower and more subtle. For instance, you might have shoulder pain and they have you using a two-pound weight. There is a method to this and it work.

Some injuries take longer than others to heal and a good therapist can be a godsend.

A massage therapist can be your most valuable ally in keeping your body supple. Not only is it a treat, but you can also learn a lot about your body — such as, where your muscles tend to tighten and spasm.

But sometimes chronic pain can be handled right at home — with the right tools and know-how. A tight muscle is like a knot and it’s hard to stretch a knot. It needs to be manipulated with hands or a foam roller, which you can buy for about $30 — we use them every day in the gym. Another great tool is a tennis or lacrosse ball. Stand next to a wall and place the ball between you and the wall and lean into it. Or lie on the floor with the ball under you. A general rule: if it’s painful, you are probably on the right spot. Push in, roll, release, and repeat.

You may feel a bump or knot release or subside.

Building muscle to support your joints is another simple way to alleviate old injuries.

Those crunchy knees I once had are stronger than ever. Instead of avoiding squats I learned proper form and built up muscle around them.

There really are few injuries that can’t be made better with weight training at every age.

Atrophy? That’s for wusses.

The Answer Lady is proud of the fact that she was at least able to restrain herself from asking him to autograph a body part... it is indeed a minor miracle that the poor man is not dragging her around on his leg to this very day. But the Answer Lady digresses. Just try to remember that we all put our pants on one leg at a time. (And if you find yourself slipping, repeat the word “pants” as necessary. To yourself, of course.)

The Movie Column

I

This week, Dottie Knapp, Cape May Film Society President, reviews “Identity Thief”

HATE when movies allude to story lines, even show small snippets, but never tell you how it fits in with the whole. For TV, it’s not a problem. It’s just a teaser so you will watch next week’s show. So maybe they are expecting to make a sequel to the new comedy Identity Thief, but I’m not holding my breath.

Identity Thief is a buddy movie of sorts.

Melissa McCarthy steals Jason Bateman’s identity (his name is Sandy, thereby allowing for some sophomoric name gender jokes). She destroys his credit and his chance to advance economically. Through a series of absolutely ridiculous reasons he is left to bring this woman back to his hometown in Colorado and only then will the authorities be able to arrest her.

The Bateman character finds the thief.

He tells her that all he needs her to do is to come back with him and tell his new boss that all the things that he is being accused of (which includes being involved with a drug dealer) is really her. By the way, there is nothing in the movie that touches on any-

Bateman and McCarthy’s performances served to enhance this otherwise unsatisfying movie body being a drug dealer.

Since she agrees for some unknown reason to come with him, how are we going to make this interesting? Throw in a bounty hunter, and a convict (the drug dealer?) who sends people to kill her. Everyone who is chasing Bateman and McCarthy have runins with the law and are removed from the playing field, leaving me wondering what that story was all about. My guess is there

were alternate endings, which explains the drug dealer business. It’s an explanation that doesn’t make me any happier.

Jason Bateman is a wonderful straight man and Melissa McCarthy does every embarrassing thing the writers of the Hangover series could ask of her. Lessons learned: wait for Red Box to see this one, and don’t give out your social security number over the phone.

A quick note from Cape May Film Society member Catherine Walton from Weddings by the Sea about Oz the Great and Powerful: “Franco was all wrong for the part of Oz — we wanted Johnny Depp! All the other actors were great, as were the sets and costumes. But Franco just doesn’t have the charisma or charm to pull off this particular leading role. Depp could have made it funny, fantastical, and sexy!”

It’s a holiday known for boozing and celebrating Irish heritage, but members of Lower Township Moose Lodge #1054 also saw in St. Patrick’s Day an opportunity to help children in need.

Jimbo Miller spearheaded the Lodge’s party on this day, proceeds from which benefited the Brendan Borek High Tides Memorial Fund — dedicated to providing assistance for children with cancer in Cape May County — and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which helps kids with life-threatening medical conditions realize their wildest dreams.

“Both of these organziations helped my daughter,” Jimbo told us. “In December of 2003, Make-A-Wish made it possible for her to go on a Christmas shopping spree at the Mall of America. What were they thinking sending a teenager to a mall that size?!” he joked.

3/15: Flag Ceremony At Lower Cape May Regional High School

«

In January, Lower Cape May Regional High School biology and anatomy teacher, Dave Pacevich, attended an event hosted at the Cape May Lutheran Church by the Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower. Here, he listened to area veterans recount their experiences in our nation’s wars. When a number of them expressed concern that our country’s youth are not familiar with — or that they may be forgetting — the sacrifices made by such vets, Dave had the idea to launch a series of flag ceremonies, each one held in honor of an area veteran.

The first event, held at Lower Cape May Regional High School, was dedicated to Eugene Sole, who passed away on August 8, 2011 after a three-year battle with cancer.

Gene, former vice-principal of LCMR and former principal of the Richard M. Teitelman Middle School, was with the Marine Corps for 20 years, serving in the Gulf War and Somalia, and he completed two tours in Iraq.

Before retiring, he was awarded the Bronze Star medal for his courage.

Gene, father of Jackson and Tyler, and

husband of Betsy Sole of Love the Cook, also played in a bluesy jazz band called Old School, served as a volunteer fireman, and coached soccer and little league baseball and football. Many of LCMR’s student athletes were in attendance at this ceremony. “It’s important for them to acknowledge why they have the freedom to play,” Dave told us.

In April of 2004, Gene also resurrected a

defunct Boy Scout troop, Troop 73. A record 13 boys earned Eagle Scout status under his seven-year leadership. Appropriately, it was members of Troop 73 who raised and lowered Gene’s casket flag on this day.

“When it comes to events that benefit the community,” current Scoutmaster Brian Favre told us, “the scouts don’t have a choice about participating, and they know that, but they were happy to do this.”

HESE days, it’s tough to be the Easter Bunny. Even in Cape May, Google Street View makes it pretty difficult for a six-foot bunny to hide treats effectively.

In addition, the job description is more than a little unclear.

Santa’s job is straightforward, but kids want different things from the Easter Bunny.

Some want to search for real eggs, some prefer plastic ones, and still others search for baskets. There’s no set schedule, and EB has to do it all without a staff of elves. So why not help a bunny out this Easter?

Things were simpler in the old days.

Pagans delivered baskets of produce to the goddess Oestre to ensure a good harvest.

Put the eggs in a pot in a single layer with two inches of water. Cover and bring it to a boil. Remove it from heat and allow to sit for 10 minutes. Remove the eggs with a slotted spoon and place them in a bowl of cold water. Place them back in the carton and store them in the refrigerator. Do this a couple of days ahead of time, then dye them with a kit or with food coloring.

Eighty people attended the kick-off party for the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities’ upcoming season. Director Michael Zuckerman told us what a great opportunity this was to welcome back the part-time employees who’ve been off during the winter months, and to honor the veterans who’ve been serving the organization for anywhere from five to 30 years. “We are all hugely psyched for the 2013 season,” he said. So what’s there to look forward to? Michael pointed out some highlights: -The eighth annual designer showhouse is being built right now across the street from the Physick Estate. Opening its doors on June 21, it will showcase the work of a dozen South Jersey designers.

The 24th Annual Music Festival will open May 26.

A summer exhibit at the Emlen Physick Estate on the Chalfonte Hotel and the cast of characters who’ve worked there since it opened in 1836 will begin April 26.

On May 11, a party at the lighthouse will commemorate 25 years that it’s been open to the public.

The second Crab and Craft Beer Festival will be August 10. “The folks who run it have promised us we will not run out of beer or crab!” Michael said.
