Ramblings From The Editor

T

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

he experiment is over. We tried to do something different with Exit Zero, because we feared it might eventually turn stale if we didn’t. And guess what, you, the people, didn’t want us to change — you loved us just the way we were. I am referring to our decision, earlier this year, to increase the physical size of Cape May’s peppy periodical by 25%, and changing the distribution to every two weeks. There were VERY good reasons for the changes, but I won’t go into them. Suffice to say, we polled our advertisers to ask if they prefered the new format or the original one, and by a majority of more than 4:1, our advertisers called for the return of the original. So that’s what we’re doing! To those who really liked the new format (I’m thinking of you, Ryan Griffin, Ryan Platzer and Evan Hirsch to name three), I’m sorry, man... we tried. The funny thing is, the new format was a hit with young men. I guess they’re strong enough to carry around the new size — seriously, to listen to some folks, you’d think we had started printing on lead, such were the complaints from people who said it was too difficult to read because it was large and bulky. The new/old format will return on Thursday, July 3, which is extremely appropriate since that’s the date that Exit Zero launched, in 2003. That issue will be memorable for another reason — it will be the last one Jason Black works on. This magazine’s advertising guru; my Man Friday; one of the most efficient, organized and reliable machines on two wheels; a man with the weirdest diet on

bug him. Since Jason is one tough guy to replace, we will most likely be keeping things internal through the end of the year. That means that you lovely advertisers will now have to deal with me — so don’t dare be late with your advertising changes, okay? Speaking of family, as I was a few paragraphs ago, I have to give a mention to my parents, who are currently enjoying not only their first trip to Cape May, but their first visit to the US! So take a bow Dave and Helen Armitt, who at the ripe old ages of 83 and 79 (sorry, mum, for calling you out) decided to shake off the cobwebs and go on a mighty adventure. They took the eight-day trip from Southampton, England to Brooklyn on the Queen Mary 2, are spending three weeks in Cape May (with day trips to New York City and maybe more), before getting back on the boat for the seven-day trip home to Paisley, Scotland. I’m proud they had to cojones to do this, and just so excited to show them the place I love. So if you see me with Dave and Helen around town (mum is about 4-10, by the way), please come up and say, “I just wanted to tell you how absolutely amazing your son is” — and I’ll make it worth your while later. Come party with us! To celebrate the launch of our July color issue, we are going to have a party at the Galvanic store on the mall. Owner Ryan Platzer coordinated the men’s fashion shoot in the July issue, so it felt like the perfect place to celebrate. We will be offering the usual treats you get at Exit Zero parties, so come hang out at Galvanic on July 10 from 4pm to 8pm. See you then!

earth (drinks Coke like it’s going out of fashion, won’t go near hot drinks and never touches alcohol — who DOES that? — and never eats solid foods) is leaving me after nearly 10 years. Honestly, it’s been the longest relationship of my life (outside of family, obviously) so it will be a pretty big deal when he walks out of this door for the last time, except I’m being a wee bit dramatic there. Jason will continue to work with us on certain projects, but will be setting up his own marketing outfit, The Arrowhead Agency (“Straight to the point” is his slogan — get it?). Naturally, I wish Jason nothing but good things as he prepares to set off on his own entrepreneurial adventure, this time without a pain-in-the-ass, funny-talking boss to

TALK OF THE TOWN

The Old Fogey

Davy’s Lake Some memories of Davy’s Lake, that hidden watering hole where Cape May kids had their coming of age… Alexander Smida: “We’d carry six-packs to the beach in pillowcases over our shoulders. You could just pretend like you were fishing when the cops came around. Never mind that your cooler didn’t have squid in it. It was a good place to be bad, in an innocent kind of way. Jane Blaszczyk: “We’d bring guitars and play music. We were friendly with the cops. The police used to come and warn us when the police were coming!” Curtis Bashaw: “It’s a hidden gem where you can have your own moment. When you’re there, you’re discovering something new. It’s similar to what Walden Pond was to Thoreau, with just a little more grit or texture. It’s seen it all — the recklessness of youth and also the more contemplative years of adulthood. It’s a magical spot.” — Diane Stopyra

M

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

odern funfairs are rubbish. The thought came to mind as I sped upside down on the brand new rollercoaster at Coney Island in distant New York City. Thunder-something, I believe they call it, in a futile attempt to convince us we are on something exciting. Well, I was no huge fan of the now-demolished Cyclone, at least not until the passing of time loosened the bolts ans rivets and the whole thing rattled like Death’s dice cup. The new one? Granted, it turns upsidedown, and does some improbably corkscrew things that had fainthearted passengers shrieking in terror and delight, but where is the danger? At no stage did I genuinely believe the car I was riding in might fly off the tracks and land in the ocean. Or become stuck inverted so that we all hung there wailing and crying until all our blood ran into our upside-down heads and our eyes popped out. Back in the day, Cape May’s Funfair of Fear opened the eyes, blew back the hair and loosened the bowels. Our rollercoaster — Ole Faithless — had about a 50 per cent chance of returning riders to the

5 minutes to take off.... at the wine bar

plaform at the end, at least with all their body parts still attached. The cars reached speeds of around 300mph, propelled by Henry Ford’s experimental rocket propulsion engines. The experience of being taken from a standing start to 100mph in under a second was unique, and we had to not just measure prospective riders’ heights, but the thickness and muscularity of their necks, to try and cut down on the number of beheadings-by-acceleration that took place. Also, we did not have a single track, but a number of options that a car might take due to the riders’ weight distribution, luck and the

operator’s malice. On the night that things went spectacularly wrong, the operator was Young Albert. How could you allow a 10lb dog to operate a complex and deadly rollercoaster, I hear you ask? Well, have you ever seen paw-eye coordination like that of a hunting dog? If a Yorkshire terrier can pluck a grouse from the air or snatch a rat from a drainpipe, he could surely control a fairground ride, I said. Though in fairness I only said it that once. For all was going well — the howls and shrieks could be hear for miles around, and the queues were round the block. Albert was a maestro at the controls, then a gust of wind blew a wad of saltwater taffy from a tourist’s hands and it landed on Albert’s snout. He tried to wipe it with his hairy paws and became hopelessly glued to the accelerator control. In the ensuing panic, a rollercoaster car careered off into the tent that happened to house the renowned Dynamites and Explosive Powders of the World exhibition. When the dust finally settled, it did so on a world of rules and regulations and “keep your hands in the car” nonsense.

DID YOU KNOW

The Answer Lady

When The Stars Align Cape May has long been a showcase for famous actors to hone their craft. The tradition began with the first movies ever created as Edwin Thanhouser brought his actors to Cape May and filmed a series of silent movies on the beach and around town. Years later, in Cape May Playhouse on the corner of Madison and Beach, where the Heritage Inn stands today, Jessica Tandy, Gloria Swanson and a young Burgess Meredith performed. Others who are believed to have performed in Cape May and stayed in what is today the Mission Inn B&B include Erroll Flynn, Diana Barrymore, Ty Power and Robert Preston. More recently, Cape May Stage has been attracting Broadway and movie veterans to perform, including Lynn Cohen (Sex and the City, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), Tony Award winner Karen Ziemba and Gregg Daniel (True Blood). — Ben Miller

Wise answers to your perplexing questions and quandaries

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My boyfriend and I made the big decision to live together. Since I already own my house, he moved in. The transition has been fairly smooth, but there is one sticky issue and I don’t know how to handle it —the toilet seat. I stumble into the bathroom half awake and find myself practically inside the bowl. This was never an issue before because he always used the guest bathroom not the master. When I asked him about it, he said, “Guest rules dictate the seat goes down for the next stranger, but in my own bathroom? A man has to do what a man has to do.” — Topsy Turvy Tidy Bowl Dear Topsy Turvy Tidy Bowl You can take the high road and try to reason with him, but it is the Answer Lady’s experience that he will probably laugh and pat you on the head. Eventually, you will

remember to check and it will prove far less aggravating. On the other hand, if you are inclined to a dyspeptic personality and want to make a point, you might try leaving a tampon on the bathroom vanity and start using his razor for your legs. When asked how you could dare do such a thing, simply replay that, “Guest rules dictate a different course of action when staying at someone’s home, but when in the privacy of your own bathroom, a girl has to do what a girl has to

do.” A third option is a dual membership at North Beach Health Club. Ask proprietor Mark Chamberlain to set you up with a CrossFit duel to the finish — winner takes all, including the toilet seat option. Dear Answer Lady I recently had guests over to dinner and was appalled that their children were permitted to use their iPads, NEVER engaging in conversation, barely eating the meal I had prepared. I am from the south and bit my lip, but now want to confront the parents on their poor manners. — Outraged Dear Outraged The Answer Lady has never found that telling parents their children are ill-mannered, inconsiderate little imps ever comes to any good. You have two choices: find new friends or bring back the southern tradition of setting up a children’s table. That way they are not directly in your line of sight and conversation among the adults can flow more freely because the twitch in your eye will have dissipated. Or... take them out to Island Grill for a child-free dinner. In the long run it will save wear and tear on your brain and that’s always a good thing.

THE BIG EXIT ZERO Q&A

CAPE MAY STAGE MANAGING DIRECTOR JON WOJCIECHOWSKI Interview by DIANE STOPYRA Photograph by ALEKSEY MORYAKOV

J

on Wojciechowski, Managing Director for Cape May Stage, says sometimes he feels like a marionette puppet that god is having a good laugh with. Hit by a car in second grade. Dislocated a knee in high school. Cancer. Cancer, again. But none of these things have dulled his spirit, or his passion for following his dream —helping take Cape May stage to the next, world-class level. Where are you from? I grew up between New York City and the Hudson Valley. I consider myself a resident of both. I spent my formative years tramping around — and I use that word intentionally — Greenwich Village.

What did you want to be as a kid? I always wanted to work in the theater. As a kid and in my early teens, I got involved with theater projects and discovered at an early age that I was a terrible actor, but I was a creative person. I liked set design, so that’s what I wanted to study in college. What happened? My parents, being practical parents, told me they wouldn’t pay for college if I was going to study theater because they wanted me to be able to have a life and a career after college, so I studied primarily business and marketing, but I always took theater classes on the side. What was your proudest role? When I was in high school, my friend Diana, who is now an Emmy-winning television producer, and I started a theater company. We produced a lot of theater in New York in old bank conference rooms or whatever space we could find and we would produce theater.

We both ended up going to college in London, so we got to produce there and in the outskirts of the city and back in New York as well. That’s quite an accomplishment for teenagers. I think the thing we had going for us is naiveté. No one bothered to tell us we could fail so that never even factored into the equation. I often say it: the key to success is not knowing you can fail. If were to do this now, I’d be thinking: ‘What about the insurance and the liability and the royalties, the legal paperwork and getting non-profit status and fundraising and how are we going to pay the lighting bill?’ When you’re 18 you don’t think about those things, so as they pop up it’s like, ‘Okay, let’s figure it out.’ But I think as adults, we put all of these barriers in front of us and they seem so insurmountable. Was this part of the incentive for launching Cape May June 19-July 2, 2014 EXIT ZERO Page 73

THE EXIT ZERO Q&A From Page 73 Stage’s resident intern program? When I worked for Portland Stage [Maine], I loved the intern company. I believe we learned as much from inters as we taught them. So now we have eight people in our intern company at Cape May Stage, which means eight new pairs of eyes. They all worked somewhere different, and have all been taught with a slightly different perspective. How did you end up at Portland Stage after your parents nixed your studying of theater? After college, I went to work in marketing but primarily in health care, and I had a sensational career. I spoke nationally, won national awards, and when I left I was senior vice president for marketing and development for a huge hospital system. But I’ve had cancer twice and that causes you to reevaluate. I thought to myself, ‘I have achieved everything I ever wanted to in the business world and there is nowhere to go. I could literally have another career in a field of my choosing.’ So it got me thinking about what to do with my life and it was a very freeing exercise. I realized I always wanted to work in the theater, and I knew I was going to make a sacrifice; my first paycheck was a fraction of what my previous paycheck was, but I was in a position where I was able to follow my passion. I’m not here to prove anything to anybody

Page 74 EXIT ZERO June 19-July 2, 2014

or make my mark on the world; I’ve already done that. I just want to do good work. When you say you had cancer twice, do you mean your cancer came back a second time? I had testicular cancer the first time, and I had surgery and radiation treatment. A few years later it came back, but it reemerged as a huge mass in my chest which crushed my left lung. They weren’t sure I was going to survive. I did six months of chemo and a year of radiation treatment and now I’m celebrating my seventh anniversary of being cancer free. I only have the use of one lung, and I’m blind in my left eye, so my friends tease me because I have one nut, one lung and one eye. I call it my zen body. This is going to sound strange, but is there any part of you that’s grateful for the cancer, since it caused you to reevaluate? As odd as it sounds, it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Let’s face it: all of us are dying, so why shouldn’t we live as thought we are? When did you arrive in Cape May? I started in December of 2012. Had you been here before? I think my family may have vacationed here when I was a child, but I was too young to remember. When I saw the opportunity at Cape May Stage, I thought it was something I’d really be interested in. I saw the wonder-

ful things Roy [Steinberg] was doing and it really started the theater on this amazing trajectory. Quite honestly, for a theater this size to even survive for 25 years is quite miraculous and shows how much this community loves it. What has you most excited about the current season? I am excited by all of the shows. But I really like the readings we do often in the fall and early winter months. This year, Roy is planning to do a series called Masters of American Drama and it is free and open to the public. Give me a little-known piece of Cape May Stage trivia. There’s been a formula established nationally to assess the economic impact of arts organizations, and Cape May Stage contributes between $1.5 and $2 million annually to the local economy. I think a lot of people look at a nonprofit as a drain – ‘Oh, we’ve got to donate, we have to support, they’ve got their hand out again looking for money.’ But these people don’t realize that there are patrons who come to Cape May specifically for the theater. And that the theater supports local business. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done? When I was in college in London, we went picnicking late one night probably intoxicated — certainly intoxicated — and we climbed this big wall and found this

beautiful space to have a picnic. We didn’t realize it was the grounds of Kensington Palace and got carted away by the royal security force. What do you do in your spare time? I’m a pretty boring guy! I love to run but that’s difficult for me now with my lung. I do crossword puzzles, and I’m a big reader — I’ve always got three books going at once — and I am working on a novel. The plot? It’s called Close to You: An Overtly Gay Romance, about an intergenerational romance between two men who meet in the theater. Can you recommend a good read? I just finished a good book called Close to Shore about the first shark attack on an American in this area. It describes this region and the Philadelphia area in the early 1900s. What’s the dream? I would love to build or contribute to building something that survives. It’s a great testament to [Cape May Stage founder] Michael Laird that this theater is here 25 years afterward, and I think if 25 years from now, somebody looks back and says John and Roy really took that theater to the next level and sustained it for the next generation that would make me feel pretty good. The Movie Column

Fireworks Fears Cape May’s annual fireworks were cancelled for a decade and a half after burning shells bombarded the city and ignited many small fires. The year was 1988 and I remember it well. It was a windy day and there was a question of whether they would be shot off at all. The wind appeared to shift out to sea and the decision was made to launch the fireworks. Then the wind direction unexpectedly changed and the smoldering remains of fireworks came crashing down on roofs up along Perry and Jackson. I put out two of them out on the roof of 11 Perry Street with pitchers of water and watched other folks do the same. The fire department patrolled the area with extinguishers. When it was over, another firework would not be launched until 2004, when Curtis Bashaw and Congress Hall joined with other local businesses to bring them back — with a caveat that if the winds were high, the show would not proceed. — Ben Miller

W

Tom Sims unveils a tribute to director William Weldon

illiam Weldon has been recognized as one of the top five directors of all time, and over the next two weekends his work will be honored in two special screenings. The first film is Wings, released in 1927, which won a new award that had been introduced the previous year — it was called an Oscar for Best Picture. The film also won for best special effects. Wings is a silent film about two young men, one rich, one middle class, who are in love with the same woman and become fighter pilots in World War I. On Sunday, June 22, 8:30pm, at the First Presbyterian Church at 500 Hughes Street in Cape May, East Lynne Theater and Cape May Film Society will screen the film with live organ accompaniment. Wayne Zimmerman will play the organ. Wayne is an award-winning organist who has played many times during silent film screenings. It makes for a one-of-a-kind evening of entertainment. It’s a silent film the way it’s meant to be seen, with other people and live music. Weldon directed more than 80 films in

his lifetime, the most popular being A Star Is Born, released 10 years later (1937). That movie won Weldon another Oscar, this time for Best Writing for original screenplay (he was also nominated for Best Director but lost to Leo McCarey for The Awful Truth. The second film being screened on June

29, 8:30pm at the church will be the 1954 John Wayne classic, The High and the Mighty, for which Weldon earned another Oscar nomination. When a commercial airliner develops engine problems on a trans-Pacific flight and the pilot loses his nerve, it is up to the washed-up co-pilot Dan Roman (played by Wayne) to safely land the plane. It was Oscar night 1955, and Wellman did not win the Oscar. Without looking it up, who won the Oscar that year for Best Director (hint the film and its director took Oscar that year for this classic)? Be the first to email the correct answer to capemayfilm@hotmail.com and win a free weekend pass to the Cape May Film Festival, this year at the West Cape May Borough Hall October 17-19. One final note: please join us Friday, June 27, 7:30pm at Cape May Elementary for the screening of the Cape May Film Camp original productions! The kids work hard all week and the films are always wildly entertaining. And you’ll feel good knowing you’re supporting our local young filmmakers when you attend this free event. A Delicious $25 Giveaway To Louisa’s Chocolate Bar Our roving photographer bumped into James Hatty of Rio Grande while he was working. To sweeten the deal, we gave him a $25 gift certificate to spend at Louisa’s Chocolate Bar. What do you do here in Cape May? I’m a retired police officer from Philly. I moved down here and I work parttime for Cape Winds Florist, delivering f lowers to make people happy Were you delivering flowers when I interrupted you? Actually yes, I went inside the Collier’s liquor store with a lovely f lower arrangement that needed to be delivered to a young lady behind the counter. I think a sweetheart sent her f lowers. Do you have any interesting stories that happened to you while being a police officer in Philadelphia? I have 30 years worth of stories. Do you miss the city life? Of course, I miss the speed, but I still visit. I go to Phillies games and visit family and friends often. What’s your favorite type of chocolate? Dark chocolate, for sure. What do you like about Cape May? It’s just such a breathtaking historical scene city. I’ve been visiting here since my childhood. There’s no other place like it. Do you think Cape May is a safe city? Cape May is a very safe city. With my expertise over the years, I’ve noticed that police patrols are out there all the time and they are doing a great job.

DID YOU KNOW...

The Activity Column

Tying The Knots Hundreds of couples get married in Cape May every year. My wife, Andrea and I were married in the Sunset Pavilion in 2007. In 2008, my oldest cousin was married at the Macedonia Baptist Church and in 2009, her sister was married at Cape May United Methodist. Not surprisingly, weddings in Cape May are a longtime tradition. Here is an excerpt from an article entitled “Romantic Wedding at Cape May,” published in the Philadelphia Inquirer on August 18, 1907... “Mrs Agnes Homan of Bridgeton, came here to spend a vacation. Her absence was apparently unendurable to her fiancée... He was not long in seeking her side and in persuading her to end further suspense by consenting to immediate marriage. The proceeded to the parsonage of the Methodist church and were made one by the pastor.” — Ben Miller

ape May’s commercial fishing industry is the third largest in the nation, and the Cape May Seafood Festival, on June 28, will highlight its “immense economic and food-supply contributions.” Visitors will be treated to exhibitions of professional fishing skills, like rope tying and oyster shucking, along with with cooking demonstrations and seafood samples, with shanty music playing in the background. Scallops are likely to be the stars of the show, as rising prices make them increasingly valuable — but the scallop has been an important resource for centuries. The shell is popular in art, as a symbol for the sun, fertility or faith. Venus, the goddess of love, rose out of the sea on a scallop shell. Warriors used scallops on shields and family crests to show that they would would rise again like the sun. St James the Greater carried a scallop shell as he traveled. He would beg only what could fit in the shell, on the theory that a sip of water or a mouthful of bread could be spared by even a poor household. Pilgrims along

the Way of St James in Spain have been wearing scallop symbols ever since, and scallops imbedded along the routes keep pilgrims from being lost. The many lines of the shell are said to represent the many routes pilgrims take before they converge at the tomb of St James at Santiago de Compostela. The shell could also represent the many paths you can take to a full belly at the festival. Local chefs and students will showcase their cooking methods, although it’s tough to beat simple grilling — dry the scallops, shake on a little salt

and pepper, and grill them on a hot grill for maybe four minutes. Adventurers will love the underutilized species station, featuring whelk and scup, and purists will appreciate the raw bar. There will be a soup station for chowders and bisques, fried f lounder and shell fish stations, and a seafood salad station. Take your friends who don’t think they like fish to the taco station for an easy introduction, and if your kids resist the call of the sea, there will be a station featuring chicken tenders and mac and cheese. The Cape May Seafood festival is scheduled for Saturday, June 28 from 11am to 9pm under tents in front of Convention Hall. Beach Avenue will be closed between Howard and Gurney, so walk or take your bike. You can also park at Cape May Elementary School on Lafayette Street and take the trolley. Food will be available from 11am to 7pm. Admission is free, but you have to buy your food and beverages, including craft beer and wine. Credit cards are not accepted. S

Lower Cape May Regional High School Student Of The Week truly miss seeing.

enior Nicole Hornbeck, whose time at Lower Cape May Regional just came to an end, has definitely left her mark on the school. Hornbeck is one of the most involved students at LCMR who has shown tremendous growth from freshman to senior year, proving her dedication and hard work she has put into the school.

What was your proudest moment at LCMR? Last year when it became time to vote for National Honor Society officers, I really wanted to be the president, however I didn’t get the position. When I found this out, I was obviously very upset, but it was also a very teachable moment for me. This moment made me realize that I can’t win everything. Although this wasn’t necessarily a proud moment, it taught me how to have good sportsmanship.

Being a senior, what are your future plans? I plan to attend Drexel University for the next four years where I will major in Television Production and Media Management. Once I graduate, I aspire to work in the city, where I will produce work for TV.

What activities were you involved in? I am the president of the senior class, and the co-founder and co-president of Spanish club. I am also involved in Spanish honor society, National Honor Society, Peer Leaders, and an integral member of the driving campaign.

What will you miss the most about high school? I will definitely miss the social aspect of school. Since many of us have been together since grade school, knowing that this final month in school is the last time the entire senior class will be together is something that I will

What made you want to be involved in so many activities? During my freshman year, I realized that I needed to get more involved because I was slacking off so much. I met a lot of new friends. INTERVIEW BY MORGAN HART / PHOTOGRAPH BY AUSTIN SCHWARTZ

CHASE is a very playful and sweet guy. He loves to play; however, he would prefer to be the only dog in the house. Although he is very loving, Chase would also do best in a home without children. Come by the shelter and meet this sweet guy who’s just looking for his second chance in a new home with lots of love.

PUP is waiting for the perfect family to meet and care for him. He is a very energetic boy who loves to play. He even knows a few commands like ‘sit’, and the shelter volunteers have been working on teaching him other cues. Pup loves learning new tricks. He is great with other dogs, and would be good with kids too! If it sounds like Pup might be the one for you, stop by and say hello.

SOPHIE is at the shelter because her dad has fallen ill. It has been hard on her because she lived with only him for eight years. None of the other family members could care for Sophie because she doesn’t do well with other animals, but she’s very affectionate towards humans. Sophie loves attention and she may be older, but she still has a lot of spunk left.

DID YOU KNOW...

Bird Droppings

Looking For Arrows When Cape May was discovered, in 1609, it was already inhabited by Kechemeche Indians. According to roofer Bob Murphy, who grew up just south of the Cape May Canal, these Native Americans carried “fanny bags” full of stones, scrapers, knives and arrowheads. The Cape May County museum has many of these artifacts on display, but there are treasures still to be found on our beaches. When Bob’s not working, he’s searching. If you want to do the same, abide by these tips: 1. Be patient. “You may go 10 or 15 times and not find anything and then, all of a sudden, there’s three in one trip,” Bob says. 2. Stick to bay beaches, which turn up more than ocean-side shorelines. Check out the skiff along the canal, just behind Lucky Bones. 3. Have a discerning eye. An itsybitsy piece of stone could be a 5,000 year-old arrowhead. — Diane Stopyra

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

J

une is a climatic hodge-podge. On the surface it’s dummer but if you look closer you find lingering elements of spring, even winter. Everywhere you look these days birds are nesting. Some species, like American robins, have already f ledged young. Eastern bluebirds are already on their second broods Yet spring songbird migrants will continue to arrive throughout the month. This past week, cedar waxwings finally arrived in good number — an enigmatic species and somewhat nomadic. Wintering waxwings depart in May; come June a new wave of northbound or locally breeding birds arrive. Mississippi kites, continuing their decade-long northward range expansion, will continue to enter Cape May airspace all through June, and northbound broadwinged hawks will pass through as well. On the other side of the season, small numbers of wintering scoter are still being seen in Delaware Bay, and a lingering male common eider has also been seen around Cape May Point jetties. This

morning I saw a young one, and a sixmonth-old white-tailed deer. The animal was sporting a single spike antler harking to late summer but the coat still bore traces of the spots that yearlings commonly lose by their first winter. It was a very odd animal. Yet, if you look at the woodlands you’ll see that they have lost the pale green of spring and darkened into the reassuring tones of summer. The air rings with the cry of laughing gulls, the signature summer sound of Cape May.

Asparagus is getting harder to find at roadside farm stands and fresh strawberries are on everyone’s mind, and blueberries are just around the corner. Come August all this confusion will sort itself out and it will be solidly autumn by the bird calendar. But if you want to hold onto spring a little bit longer, head out to the beaches of Delaware Bay and catch the last of the northbound shorebirds before they set wing for Arctic breeding, grounds where summer is the briefest of visitors. Me? I’m enjoying this protracted spring and much prefer the confusion of June to the boring certainty of summer, when silence reigns and one day’s birds are the same as the next. Whatever the season Cape May Bird Observatory offers seasonally calibrated field trips led by local experts who delight in showing visitors the special nature of Cape May. For more information, and inspiration, visit www.birdcapemay.org and visit Cape May Bird Observatory at 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point, telephone 609-884-2736.

DAFFY has been patiently waiting at the shelter since last July for someone to take him to his forever home. He came into the shelter with his brothers Bugs and Elmer. They were terrified at first, but have since been learning to live the shelter life. They can all be sweet cats once you get to know them, but they are still nervous and take some time to warm up to new people. If you think you could spare the time and love for a guy down on his luck (or even all of them), stop by the shelter and give Daffy (and/or his brothers) their second chance!

«

OREO is the big boy of the shelter, weighing in at 23 pounds. He may sound like a big, tough, guy, but he’s just a little cuddle bug. He loves and gets along with other cats, kids and dogs! Oreo’s owner of 10 years surrendered him to the shelter because her grandchild was allergic. He misses them, but we know there’s someone new out there to love him. If you think that someone could be you, please come and meet him. Oreo’s adoption fee is $20 and he also qualifies for Senior for Seniors, so if you’re over 62 you can adopt him for FREE.

«

OZZY has been waiting patiently at the shelter since last July for someone to take him to his forever home. He is a big friendly guy who would love to meet you. He is quite friendly and loves to be pet. He would do best in a quieter home with lots of love. If you think you could spare the time and love for Ozzy, stop by the shelter and give him his second chance at a home. Ozzy is up to date on all vaccines, neutered, and his adoption fee is only $35.
