Ramblings From The Editor
C
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
ape May boasts the second most lucrative fishing port on the east coast, and the fourth in the nation, so it made sense to host a seafood festival here. And that’s what happened on Saturday, when thousands of people gathered under a tented village on Beach Avenue, as well as inside Convention Hall, to learn about seafood, enjoy cooking demonstrations, and then get to eat the food, while being entertained by salty old sea shanty music performed by an assortment of bands. It was a pretty major event — a whole block of Beach Avenue was closed off, and it looked like almost every employee of Cape May City was on duty. Mayor Ed Mahaney said he estimated there were around 11,000 people attending the event, although other sources thought that estimate was quite a bit on the large side. I’m glad the festival was such a big success — I’m behind any quality gigs that bring more people to town and enhance the Cape May Experience. I’m just a little bemused at how little information came out of the city. We received a press release about a news conference announcing the event on February
BIRD IS THE WORD
19, and that was the last piece of info we got, believe it or not. On Monday, I did a Google search for Cape May Seafood Festival and only found ONE news item between February 28 and June 26, and that was from a website called drinknation. And as I browsed Facebook on Friday, I noticed a comment from John Cooke, one of Cape May’s most tireless advocates, who wrote that he didn’t think a lot of people knew about this event. Don’t get me wrong — we at Exit Zero were well aware the festival was coming up and published an Activity Column about the event two weeks ago, but I think it’s
fair to say that awareness of the event outside of the last few days was low. Which is very odd given that Cape May Forum were partners in the event, along with the city. The Forum are usually VERY active in marketing their events. But apparently the City of Cape May didn’t want the Forum to promote the event, preferring to handle that on its own... except it didn’t, at least not with the local and regional press. I spoke with Mayor Mahaney on Monday and he was surprised that information had not been sent to local and regional press. “We’re having a debriefing after the holiday and that’s one item that we will have to discuss,” he said, noting that the city had used social media to get the word out. And if you checked out the city’s DiscoverCapeMay.com site, you’d notice that the only info on the festival announced that same old news conference in February. There WAS a website recently launched to promote the festival but that wasn’t promoted either. So... full marks to the city and Cape May Forum for putting together a very well-run event. But let’s hope they don’t keep it such a secret next year.

USA Today’s “#1 Fried Chicken” “LATER THAT DAY, I was reminded of one of life’s secrets: anytime you get a chance to have an 80-plus-year-old Southern chef cook for you, do it. Make that two 80-plus-year-old chefs with a century-old chicken-frying pan, and it’s worth changing your plans.” “And in the summer when the shiny new restaurants largely left me wanting, these classics served me the taste of reliable comfort that I was craving.”

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
do like a hot curry. And I do not mean modern-day curries, where one has to gasp for air and pat a handkerchief to a sweat-dappled forehead. No, I mean proper vindaloo, where one mouthful was enough to cause one’s clothes to catch alight and unless you screwed your eyelids tight shut, your eyeballs would shoot out and explode against the wall. We had the most famous curry house in America right here in Cape May, Bengal Bob’s, run by a decorated officer from the famed Bengal Lancers, and Bob (he was a man of menace and mystery, and if one pressed him on his past and how he came to ride into Cape May one day in full regalia, turban shining like ochre and lance-point glittering, he would draw his ornate cavalry sabre perhaps an inch from its scabbard and stare unblinking into the questioner’s eyes until the subject was changed to something like the recent spell of wet weather) would always greet first-timers with a quiet “just how tough is memsahib?”, and point with a finely maniucured hand to the hand-painted sign on the wall that spelled out in a curly
serif font, and carefully exact non-perfect English (Bob was our Scrabble champion for 10 years in a row) that anyone eating an entire “Very hot indeed curry” would not be charged a penny for their evening’s food and drink. Wise heads would demur, but without fail, every jackanape who passed through the door would take up the challenge. Bob would send a runner (and in later years a telegram) to alert myself and a dozen other old hands to come at a gallop to witness the fun. The dish would arrive on a porcelain plate, the young
lad would tuck in, and for a few seconds, all that could be heard was bold chomping and perhaps a muttered “this isn’t so bad”. Then a cough, a hiccup, a few gagging noises and then, as we all ducked, an explosion of sorts. How we laughed as the shrieking maroonfaced lad downed pint after pint of $30 Agni lager and his companions hunted high and low for stray teeth and smoldering clothes. There was one local worthy who did in fact beat the challenge. No, no, not myself, although I am flattered that you think so. No, it was Young Albert. That brave little Yorkie wolfed down an entire plate of the hot stuff and not so much as a whimper was issued. Bob was so stunned that he blanched and I swear a very English-sounding “bugger me!” escaped his lips. Albert, excited by all the attention, barked once and then tooted (a common enough thing in flatulent terriers) and blow me down if a jet of flame did not shoot out of his tiny rear end, sending him three feet up in the air, right across the restuarant and through the front window like a miniature hairy cruise missile. Ah, the times we had.

ayaking can be a thrilling sport, but it doesn’t have to be. It can be a great workout, if that’s what you’re looking for. It can even get you up close and personal with some of nature’s fiercest predators — people say you should go into the Delaware Bay to look for sharks. At least I think that’s what they say — I was busy wondering what kind of crazy person goes looking for sharks. Kayaking can also be a sort of moving meditation, and meditation is good for you. Learning to calm your brain eases symptoms of chronic illness and reduces tension, in you and in the people who have to put up with you. The gentle, repetitive motion propels you to over the water, and if you stay in the harbor, you are unlikely to face rough conditions. There’s just enough challenge to keep your brain occupied, so you can’t rehash Friday’s staff meeting, or tomorrow’s visit from your Aunt Cantankerous. It’s just you, and sun and the sea. Or the moon and the sea, if you join a full moon tour. With luck, you’ll have a little breeze, so you can explore
the grassy back bays without being eaten by bugs. You may see a turtle, and you’ll surely see a variety of birds. You can chat with your buddy, or not. You can wave to little kids as you pass the Fishermen’s Memorial. Watch a family toss a ball to their dog. Wish the diners at the Lobster House bon appetit. Or just paddle. If you’re determined to seek more of a thrill, you can try a longer paddle, like the Cove Beach to Higbee Beach Sunset Kayak organized by the Nature Center, or join a tour around Cape Island. Tired teenagers are eas-

ier to deal with, so send yours to Aqua Trails Kayak and Paddleboard Camp, for ages 12 to 16. Students will learn safety, basic paddling, and rescues in the harbor. No experience necessary, but participants must know how to swim. Monday to Friday, July 14-18, or August 11-August 15 from 9:00am to noon. Registration is extremely limited, and the cost is $250, with a discount for NJ Audubon members. This includes all equipment and three hours of peace for mom and dad. Call 609-898-8848 for information. Rent a kayak from Aqua Trails on Delaware Avenue by the Nature Center (609884-5600), Miss Chris Marina (609-8843351) on Wilson Drive, or Cape Kayaks by the Harbor View restaurant (609-8841224). Your vendor may deliver your kayak to you, but I like to go to them to get a quick refresher lesson. Bring a bottle of water. The Movie Column
S
By guest columnist Pary Tell (plus Justin and Bryn Popdan, her grandchildren)
et in a world where Vikings were burly and dragons were wild, How to Train Your Dragon 2 (like the original) is an animated film based on the book by Cressida Cowell. An action comedy, the first instalment told the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who didn’t seem to be living up to his town‘s rich tradition of being dragon tamers. The sequel finds Hiccup and Toothless (his dragon) discovering an isolated cave where scores of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider live. The two find themselves in a battle to protect the peace. Justin, age 10, says: “Three words: ‘It was awesome!’ My favorite parts were when the dragon riders were playing Dragon Chase and when the dragon riders were trying to ride the baby dragons. That was funny. And, of course, I liked in the end when the good dragons won over the evil dragons. I would see it again.” [Grammy’s note: the Dragon Chase game involves sheep being catapulted into
How to Train Your Dragon 2 is an action-packed, fun-filled family adventure. the air and grabbed by the dragons then deposited into a hatch. There should have been a disclaimer that no sheep were injured in the filming of this movie.] Bryn, age 6 ½, says [note: spoiler alert]: “This is a good movie. It was sad when Hiccup’s father died and I almost cried, but it was good that he found his mother and they were together. I liked the baby dragons too. They were cute and funny and crashed into things when they

tried to fly. My favorite part was at the end when all the dragons were happy and shot fire into the air and it turned into fireworks! I would see it again too.” Grammy’s note: This film has some scary dragons and scary characters, compared to the first installment. I wouldn’t take anyone younger than five or six to see it. Also, the main character’s father is killed but the actual death scene and subsequent funeral are tastefully done without any blood and gore — still, sensitive children might have a problem with that. In the end, good does triumph over evil, and the peacemaker does beat the guy who tries to rule through fear (traditionally known as the bully). That’s a good message for all kids. Thanks to Parry, Justin, and Bryn, for this review! Seen any good movies lately? Why not send us an email about it. You don’t have to write too much--mainly how the movie made you feel and why you would (or wouldn’t) recommend seeing it. Send your notes to capemayfilm@hotmail.com.

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady, I recently played golf with my husband and his best friend. On hole nine, my shot was on the green, his friend’s was in a bunker near the green, while my husband’s ball was back in the woods. My husband told me to drive the cart to the green and he would walk. As I approached the green, I saw his friend pick up his ball from the bunker and throw it onto the green. He came over to me and said in a low voice that “the guys often play winter rules.” I know something about “winter rules” and that is not one of them. My husband is a very good golfer and I often wondered how this man won so often when they played together. I’m afraid to tell my husband. This man is his dearest friend. — Cheated Dear Cheated, The most obvious answer that comes
to mind is to tell your husband the truth. I know you fear the “kill the messenger” syndrome, but let’s face it — this guy is not your husband’s “dearest friend.” He is a cheater. I would, however, suggest softening the blow. Present your husband with a copy of the USGA’s book on golf etiquette which can be purchased at Cape Atlantic Book Company in the City Centre Mall. When he asks you why you bought it, you can tell him it’s a present for his friend and tell him why you think the offering is necessary. It is up to your hus-
band to take it from there. The Answer Lady would suggest your husband politely explain to his “friend” that “winter rules” apply to the lie, NOT the terrain. Dear Answer Lady, My wife tried on a dress for her class reunion and asked me if she looked fat. Answer Lady, she looked like a hot-air balloon, but I couldn’t tell her the truth. First, there’d be the tears. Then the angry tirades and, finally, me on the couch for a week with nothing but frozen Hot Pockets for dinner. Still, I feel guilty for not telling her the truth. — Cowardly Lion Dear Cowardly Lion, The Answer Lady’s significant other once asked her to “move her giant walrus ass” so he could see the wide-screen TV. How about this? Ask her to try on three dresses — that way you are left with the option of choosing the one which is most flattering. It also shows her you care enough to take an interest in how she looks. Better yet, take her to Cotton Company, where they can assist in choosing the best dress for her body type. You will NOT be on the couch alone.

FARCE
“Wildly funny!” ABC News “Ken Ludwig is one of those rare contemporary playwrights who thinks in terms of old-fashioned knockabout farce...” The New York Times

In the tradition of madcap comedies, Moon Over Buffalo is a contemporary classic — a zany, slapstick, antics-driven, backstage farce that follows actors George and Charlotte Hay as they attempt to realize their big chance to move from Buffalo theater to Hollywood movies.
