Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

ational politics have no place in this column — we typically stick to the frustrating, mud-slinging local variety — but one of the highlights of my Fourth of July weekend featured a politician who has a healthy national profile but whose job it is to serve the good people of New Jersey. I’m referring to Senator Cory Booker, who stood in the garden of Curtis Bashaw’s beachfront home on Saturday morning during a fundraiser for his re-election campaign and delivered a speech layered with the most inspiring words I’ve heard from a politician since a certain senator from Illinois gave me goosebumps, although that seems like SUCH a long time ago.

Unlike the other senator from New Jersey, Robert Menendez, Senator Booker seems genuinely engaged with the southern part of the state — I’ve known of three Booker visits in the last year, whereas Menendez, to my knowledge, has been here maybe once in eight years. Senator Booker seems particularly taken with Cape May, and we won’t hold that against him, will we?

On Saturday he talked about his quickly gained affection for America’s Original

Seaside Resort, which he had known little about until he set foot here; he spoke beautifully about the American dream; and he revealed his big wish — that for a year, every senator would forget their party affiliations and make decisions based on common sense, logic and good research. Imagine how different things would turn out, he said. Imagine...

I was one of the sponsors of Saturday’s fundraiser, along with Curtis and the owners of the Whale’s Tale, Chuck and Hilary Pritchard. It’s the first time I’ve ever given money to a politician and I did it because Cory Booker doesn’t seem like your average politi-

cian, and I really hope I’m never proved wrong on this instinct. I will continue to dream that other politicians may follow his lead — and Booker does have influence. For an NJ senator he doesn’t half get around. He’s been traveling the length and width of the country helping to support fellow Democrats involved in Senate campaigns, and then there is the matter of those 1.4 million followers on Twitter.

One of the people who asked a question of Booker on Saturday was our own Shaine Meier, who will be running for a seat on city council in November. I trust that Shaine listened closely to this masterly performance, and I hope it serves him well during his Cape May campaign because, lordy, does Cape May City Council badly need new blood.

Ah, those Cape May fireworks. The most on-off affair since Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. (If you’re too young to get this, look it up). It’s easy (and always tempting) to blame someone when matters go so awry, and when so many people are disappointed. But I think we just have to chalk this one up to pure bad luck and some unpredictable weather. I hope and trust you still had a memorable holiday weekend.

The Old Fogey

H

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ave you ever been struck by lightning? I must say, it is one of the more invigorating experiences of my life, and one I totally recommend for everyone, except perhaps those with metal plates in their head: Wally Fong, my Korean War buddy, was struck right on the steel patch on his temple one thundery night as we toasted each other’s health atop the D’Catur Mansion’s belltower, and it set his teeth sparking for a solid week, during which time all he could say was “Grassy knoll!” over and over.

The first time I was hit I did not immediately feel the benefit; my powdered wig caught alight and the bells on my shoes melted. But once I regained consciousness and the use of my limbs I was oddly energized, with a bounce in my step that was more than just random static discharge. My vision and hearing was sharper, and my dander was up such that Mrs D’Catur had to baricade herself in the pantry for fear for of her dignity.

Since then, I have endeavored to be infused with lightning on an annual basis,

usually at a party I arrange for just that very reason. A selection of elderly/infirm guests arrive through the evening that forecasters say is best suited, and we don metal caps with little rods atop, and climb to the mansion’s Widow’s Walk as the storm breaks.

The next hour can be a bit of a haze, with the sounds of excited chatter interspersed with zaps and bangs and shrieks, and the patter of servants’ feet as they rush back and forth extinguishing guests. But once the storm has passed, I swear the (surviving) guests are 10 years younger and peppier. Backs are

straightened, rheumy eyes clear, baldy heads fuzzy and gentlemens’ (and indeed, ladies’) parts inflamed.

The after-party in the Mansion proper is a mix of the movies Eyes Wide Shut and The English Patient, with much celebrating, romancing and some tender patting at stillsmoldering extremities. Also, the smell tends to put people off eating bacon for a while, and Cape May’s top hairdressers have the devil’s own work trying to straighten out electric-tight perms for the next week or two.

As for me, I think the secret is that the electricity sets one’s bodyclock back anywhere between a year and a half century: and there’s the rub, dear friends, for if one gets struck by a freakishly powerful bolt, one can find onself a grown man/woman in a tiny baby’s body. Look at the editor of this fine newspaper: on the surface a grown brute of two-score years, but inside, a three year old with all the sudden rages and demands of a child, following a triple-strike to the chest years ago. It is a lesson, dear hearts, to beware the power of nature.

S

cience has debunked the notion that crazy things happen during a full moon, but people continue to attribute wackiness to the phases of our prettiest satellite. Some continue to believe that crime, seizures and births increase during a full moon, and a lack of evidence won’t change their minds.

The Farmers’ Almanac uses the phases of the moon to determine the “Best Days” to do everything from plant crops to cut your hair. Moonstruck believers may have a point — researchers have determined that humans have a “circalunar clock” which programs us for lighter sleep during a full moon, when our ancient ancestors would have been more at risk from predators. If our sleep is linked to the moon, why not everything else?

There are a lot of ways to get a little moony in Cape May. Try catching Moon Over Buffalo at Cape May Stage for a dose of slapstick farce as aspiring stars George and Charlotte Hay attempt to shift their careers from Buffalo theater to Hollywood.

Dottie Knapp reviews “X-Men: Days of Future Past”

ince we just finished film camp I thought it might be interesting to challenge myself to use techniques that we forced on the teens at camp when reviewing the latest installment in the X-Men series, Days of Future Past. Let’s start with log line, a sentence or two to describe a movie, to get you to want to read the rest of this review. Here goes, “In a future where the mutants are being destroyed, arch enemies Xavier and Magneto join forces to send Wolverine into the past to get their younger selves to cooperate in order to prevent a murder by Raven/Mystique that will result in the dystopian present.”

Ok, so you’re my age and you have no idea who these people are, but if you see this movie you now can have a conversation with young adults — they can explain.

Unless you only want to watch TCM for the rest of your life you should get to know these Marvel comic characters.

Yes, there is a lot of CGI in this movie, but the story is so well told that I barely

You can barely tell when Days of Future Past moves from real to CGI. noticed when it moved from real to CGI, and I didn’t need my daughter to explain the plot, which I found interesting.

Since the fun in this movie is watching Wolverine meet up with his friends as their younger selves you would do well to see earlier X-Men movies and get to know the individual super powers each possesses.

to give you a reason to see the movie I’d make a pitch (another technique we used at camp). The pitch is pretty much the log line told in a way to get you enthusiastic... something the young campers also worked on.

So ladies, here’s my pitch: “Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, looking very buff, appears sans clothes” — worth the price of admission. Gentlemen: Mystique in her blue latex is more covered than most of the female bodies one sees on the beach any day of the week. As usual, if you go, sit through the credits to see the tag at the end.

Dear Answer Lady I have a real problem and don’t know what to do. My next door neighbors are great people. We often barbecue together and have their kids over for a swim in our pool. I play cards with the husband once a week and I think the world of him, but lately when his wife comes over, she’s gotten into the habit of throwing her arms around me and kissing me on the lips — and the kisses last a little longer than is appropriate. My wife has noticed this as well and neither of us knows what to do about it. Can you help us? – Beset Dear Beset A delicate problem indeed, but certainly helped by the fact that your wife is onto her and can help run interference for you. Avoidance would be my first line of attack. When you see her come through the door or into the back yard, give her a big howdy-ho wave

and turn all your attention to that grill or her husband, meanwhile let your wife sidetrack her. If this fails to get the message across, I would recommend the old “turn the other cheek” routine and keep those lips of yours taut. However, if all goes awry and “Hot Lips” actually does end up in lock down on your face, have your wife step up to the plate, gently push her aside, and say, “No dear, this is how it’s done.” And give you the longest, deepest kiss she is capable of. Then, in a whisper so the husband cannot hear, tell Hot

Lips, “Maybe you could practice on your own husband next time.” It might end the barbeques, but I doubt it will end the card games or your friendship with the husband. Then celebrate your devotion to one another by strolling over to the Mad Batter for a romantic dinner on their front porch.

I am the busboy at a local restaurant and am very excited to be making my own money, plus I’d like to be a chef one day, so this is a great foot in the door. But the head server has bad breath. I work very closely with this woman and, at times, it is overwhelming. Should I say anything? — Overwhelmed Dear Overwhelmed Should you tell the person who can most affect your near future, not to mention your wallet, that her breath reminds you of a men’s locker-room? NO. You have to suck it up and hold your breath. You might consider popping over to Dellas’ Five and Dime and purchasing some breath mints and offering her one, FROM TIME TO TIME. Buying her a lifetime supply would, again, be ill-advised.
