Ramblings From The Editor
I
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
t has been six (some would say long) years since Ed Mahaney settled himself into the seat of mayor of Cape May. During that time he’s had a pretty good run, imposing himself on city politics in a way that the mayor isn’t supposed to in the form of government this city operates, which is supposed to be run by a city manager. But Mahaney’s power monopoly might be under threat as we approach the November elections. There are three seats being contested this November, with incumbents Bill Murray, Jack Wichterman and Deanna Fiocca each stepping down. In the last week or so two notable names have picked up petitions at City Hall — former policeman Rusty Chew, who narrowly lost to Mahaney in the 2012 election, and Jerry Inderwies, Jr, who recently retired as Cape May’s fire chief and whose father Jerry was ousted as mayor by Mahaney (intriguing, right?). I’m also expecting 28-year-old Shaine Meier to be in the mix — Shaine has run before and has since accumulated a good deal of experience in local organizations, and I hope he gets his chance this time
BIRD IS THE WORD
Mary Ann Riley). Jeff is one of the best-loved performers in Philadelphia and is bringing his talents to Convention Hall for three Saturday nights — July 26, August 16 and August 30. Hope to see you there! Speaking of cool things to do, I recommend you come and check out Exit Zero’s latest enterprise, a joint venture with Morey’s Piers called artBOX, on the Wildwood boardwalk. It made its debut last year, but has really come into its own this summer. This Thursday, July 17, we are having a Third Thursday event, where you can see our spectacular shopping and art village, housed in metal shipping containers. Hosting along with myself will be David Macomber, one of my favorite artists (and all-around human beings). Making some amazing smoothies will be Mickey Chew, with his tricked-out Aloha Smoothie Company container. And see glass-blowing by the talented Pete Bieling, Jr. The artBOX is located on Adventure Pier, on Spencer Avenue, and the fun starts at 6pm. You’ll love it, I promise. Finally, how can Bella Vida owner Jeannie Monge be 60? Remarkable.

around. The rumor mill is also mentioning a de Satnick and Bea Pessagno, daughter of former mayor Frank Gauvry, as possible candidates. Filing deadline is September 2. Whatever happens, one thing is certain — we need some strong new characters on the city council. So step up folks and let’s make this a fascinating election campaign. Looking for a splendid thing to do the weekend after next? Turn to pages 78 and 79 to get a preview of Cape May Summer Club, a glitzy, glam show being put on by Cape May native Jeff Coon (many will know his mother, former Mug bartender

“LATER THAT DAY, I was reminded of one of life’s secrets: anytime you get a chance to have an 80-plus-year-old Southern chef cook for you, do it. Make that two 80-plus-year-old chefs with a century-old chicken-frying pan, and it’s worth changing your plans.” “And in the summer when the shiny new restaurants largely left me wanting, these classics served me the taste of reliable comfort that I was craving.”

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
saw a dog pooping in the street the other day. It was on the corner of New York and Madison, in broad daylight. It was huge, and brown. The dog, I mean: it was possibly one of those amiable but dim chocolate labradors, or maybe a kind of doodle. The owners — a man of middle age and more than middle girth, was an out-of-towner: I can tell such things by a chap’s gait, posture and demeanor, and the way he shambled off-balance and dragged one foot behind him a little were clues that he was at least third-generation Philly. Well, you all know my feelings about people/animals/forces of nature that defile our gem of a city, so can imagine my rage. I marched right up to him, Young Albert straining at his leash (he does not require one, but chooses to have it as an alibi, should he seek, in the manner of superheroes, to sneak off when no-one is looking and cause mayhem, returning before anyone notices and can affix blame), and demanded he pick up the steaming pile right away. He was rash enough to laugh in my face as his hound
bared its teeth. I shall not go into much detail about the next five minutes, as I know that children and pregnant ladies read this fine newspaper. Suffice to say that Albert slipped his leash nd that (a) that gent will need a great many baths to scrub himself clean and odor-free, and (b) my good calfskin gloves will never be the same again. Oh, and (c) he is no longer the owner of a dog. But that got me thinking, and so we have passed a handy local law that gives us the power to appoint to special P-wardens
whose job is to patrol the city ensuring that any beast or man who defecates on our streets will feel the full force of the law: obviously and of least interest is an on-the-spot fine of $5,000, but the best past of the law is that they will carry modified riot shotguns, with an adapted magazine that can scoop up any poop that measures between two and nine on the Solidity Scale, and discharge it at great force towards the miscreant. Think of it as being similar in coverage to one of those spray tan booth that our less fortunate Jersey Shore neighbors might use, but just a little more stinging and fragrant. In cases where the culprit has scooped and scooted, DNA testing will be carried out by constabulary (on whom Conan Doyle based his famous creation, Sherlock Holmes), and when the fugitive’s address has been determined, 300lbs of local artisanal dog poop will be mailed to their home/ trailer in a high-pressure cannister with a clever mechanism that expels the contents with huge force and a 360-degree spread as soon as the recipient touches it.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, enjoy our wine country
ometime we overthink. Things don’t have to be perfect to be pretty darn great. You don’t have to know the vintage to enjoy a simple glass of chilled white wine on a Cape May porch, cold enough to fog the glass, crisp enough to provide a respite from the summer’s heat. And you don’t have to be capable of creating a masterpiece to enjoy painting a picture. Wine and art have been natural partners since the first fermented grape. Artistic jugs were used to store wine in ancient times, and wine has been the subject of countless still life paintings, often posed next to a hunk of cheese. We’re accustomed to sipping wine from little plastic cups at gallery openings as we enjoy art created by others. Now, Willow Creek Winery lets you sip wine as you create your own art. This is a new twist on the pairing of art and wine. All across the country, people are gathering for art lessons served with wine. It’s a great activity for a first date, and it
also attracts workers bent on team building, bridal parties looking for a new way to celebrate, or friends looking to break out of a rut. The atmosphere is low-key at Willow Creek Winery’s “Drink Wine and Paint” on Wednesdays from 6pm to 8:30pm. Local artist Carol King Hood is your instructor, and the fee of $55 includes all materials and a $10 voucher for a wine purchase. There is no pressure to create a museum piece. You are the only critic of your own work, and the relaxed feeling allows you to reconnect with your artistic side, even if the last time you

picked up a paintbrush was in your middle school art class or to redecorate the bathroom. Guided by an instructor who seems to believe that there is an artist in all of us, you may be pleasantly surprised. Focus on creating a memory, not a masterpiece, and you’ll be delighted with the results. Of course, you get to take your creation with you. Hang it in your home as a special souvenir of your time in Cape May. Not up for the visual arts? Tap in to the musical arts — visit Hawk Haven for Sangria Sundays featuring the performances of singer/songwriters. Natali has music among the vines on Monday nights, and Jessie Creek celebrates sunset in the vineyards with music every Friday. Serious vinophiles insist the wines at Turdo Vineyards are works of art in themselves. If the culinary arts are more your style, visit Cape May Winery for a Summer Lobster Bake on Saturday, August 16 at 8pm. Tickets are $55. Call 609-884-1169 for reservations. Or, try their Wednesday Grill Nights for $32. Doors open at 6:30.

Two must-have books This story of a young sailor shipwrecked off the coast of Cape May was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s. But after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now this remarkable story can finally be enjoyed.
These beautiful books, published by Exit Zero, are available at the Exit Zero Store & Gallery at 109 Sunset and 316 Beach. Or at our online store: www.ezstore.us. And also at Cape Atlantic Book Company, Whale’s Tale, Good Scents, Tommy’s Folly and Sunset Beach.

The Movie Column
D
By Dottie Knapp, President of Cape May Film Society
uring a conversation about Joe Pesci and all the many movies he had been in, my Aunt Tini said, “You like Joe? I’ll get an autographed picture from him when he stops by.” And she did, because Joe’s a Jersey Boy, and he comes back to the old neighborhood and stops in to visit his friends. Neighborhoods, friendships, street code behavior are the attributes brought out in Jersey Boys, the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, directed by Clint Eastwood. Jersey Boys has been a Broadway hit for 10 years, and that’s probably because my family have all seen the show an average of eight times per person. And it isn’t just my aunts, uncles and cousins. The night I saw the musical on Broadway (you got it, with family) the conversations included how many times people had seen the show already and also who used to hang out with various members of the group. Joe Pesci introduced Frankie (played
You might want to see Jersey Boys more than once... maybe a lot more than once. in the film by John Lloyd Young who won a Tony for this role on Broadway) and the band to a songwriter, Bob Gaudio (played by Eric Bergen). Gaudio wrote the songs that made them famous. After paying dues by being back-up singers the guys finally get a record that puts them on the charts, “Sherry.” From there it is one hit after another. There are mob connections, loan sharks, woman problems, tax evasion — the typical problems of a Jersey Boy.

The group, led by Valli, honors the debts and pays them off as the neighborhood code demands. But mostly there are the songs, and that’s when the movie moves from ho-hum to making you want to stand up in the aisles and dance. The appreciative audience applauded the performances as if they had been watching the Broadway show. On stage the back story is told in short bursts by the various members, with the music taking center stage. Eastwood spends more time on these individual events and gives them more emphasis than the music. With a movie you get more scope and he took it. Go see the movie, enjoy the music and then get a ticket and see it on Broadway. As I was leaving the theater I ran into a cousin who agreed with me that the movie caught the people and the period quite well. When asked, Lynn said she’d seen the play seven times, but planned on seeing it again. We both agreed that we now want to see Jersey Girl – the Connie Francis story.

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I recently traveled here from Britain to visit my son. It is my first trip here and everyone has been gracious and generous, but therein lays the problem. Much of my time is spent eating. We have been invited to dinner either at someone’s home or a restaurant nearly every night. My problem is the portions — they are so large. I can’t eat that much, but I hate to leave all that food on my plate. It is a terrible waste and I don’t want to offend anyone. I also worry about my son. If he adopts the American ways, he’ll gain weight and I fear for his good health. What should I do? And why do you American’s eat so much? — Bothered and bewildered Dear Bothered and Bewildered Let’s begin with the portion problem. If you are in a restaurant, there is precious little you can do, save for asking for what we
Americans call a doggie bag. You can then make two meals from one. It’s inappropriate to ask for a doggie bag when dining at someone’s home, but if you think your host/ hostess is serving dinner already plated, you can perhaps have your son explain ahead of time that you prefer smaller quantities. As to the question, why Americans eat so much? I suspect it comes from a notion that we are a country which takes great pride in our bounty. Maybe a little too much pride. Meanwhile, make your son take you to Cape May

Lighthouse — climbing those 199 steps will surely walk some of that food off and bonus, the view is spectacular. Dear Answer Lady I am planning my wedding and my parents are insisting on paying for the rehearsal dinner, much to the annoyance of my fiancé’s parents. I would like to say it is because of their generosity, but it’s a control issue. They don’t approve of the restaurant my future inlaws had in mind. I have always been intimidated by them. — Cowering Bride Dear Cowering Bride; The Answer Lady is sympathetic to your plight, but you must put your big-girl panties on. I would suggest two solutions: One — tell your parents to suck it up, preferably while crying, and then run like hell before they can say anything. Two — pick a third alternative. I would suggest any number of Cape May restaurants. SeaSalt, Oyster Bay and M’Ocean come to mind. Run it by your future in-laws and then, once again, tell your parents this is your solution to not starting your marriage off with the theme song from Hang ’Em High.

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
his column is written in response to two individuals who recently sought my counsel in matters wildlife. One involved a nesting heron that was parked over a hous, the other a mute swan on the losing side of a territorial dispute with a rival swan. These are not isolated incidents. Interactions between denizens of the natural world and “our world” are destined to increase. My advice is strive to be accommodating and maybe to stop thinking of the world as one divided between humans and everything else. Fact is it’s a small world and we are all part of the same dynamic system that supports life on earth. Herons nest in trees. The sapling you probably planted for shade grew up to be the support base for a heron’s nest. It might be an inconvenience but it is also natural. As more and more people are discovering, we can wall ourselves in but we can’t wall nature out. As wildlife populations increase and our species more and more elects to situate our homes in natural areas, interactions between people and wildlife are only going to increase. I’m not the dealer at the table in this great
interlocking game of life, or the casino manager or the bouncer. Like you I’m just a player at the table doing the best I can with the hand Ma Nature dealt me, playing against mockingbirds that sing all night, skunks living under our house, and territorial swans beating the snot out of each other because they are hot-wired to move their genes forward. At least swans don’t have assault weapons or nuclear arsenals at their disposal. As for what we can do to keep from being discomfited by intraspecific aggression
between swans — one solution is to deport the swans. Mute swans are non-native, invasive species. They are here because some people think they are beautiful (which they are) and are willing to overlook the aggressive side of swan nature in particular and nature in general. I’ve seen American robins beat each other half to death over disputed territory which the tax office recognizes as my backyard. As a thinking, feeling human I’m not unmoved by the injury birds inflict upon each other, but as a lifelong student of nature I also strive to be dispassionate. I don’t like or understand everything I see in nature but I also know I lack the wisdom and standing to interfere. While you and I might have designed a better less conflicted world, it seems our input was not invited. Back to the herons. After the breeding season, in September, it might help to try pruning the trees back. But buying a power washer might not be a bad idea, in the short run. With a little luck a pair of great horned owls will take to roosting in your trees and the herons will vamoose.
