“Lightning” Jack Lindeman became something of a celebrity in the UK due to his participation in the worldfamous Cambridge-Oxford Boat Race. Jack, a Cape May Beach Patrol mainstay, got his nickname after being struck by lightning while working the beach in 2008 — he was hospitalized but released after a few hours.

Dan Mathers started interning with Exit Zero after graduating from Penn State.

He launched a magazine for us in West Chester, PA before leaving to start his own publication there. He also makes a point to strike the same seemingly effortless pose in every photograph.

Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ‘n’ ends... by Jack Wright

rhapsodized in the last issue about the new generation of entrepreneurs that give me great optimism about the future of Cool Cape May. Well, I’m not done talking about them. Over the weekend we photographed and interviewed a bunch of them for a great feature that will run in our first color issue of the year (out on April 23) and I took the opportunity to enjoy some of the goodies being produced by these folks. In other words, I’m not just talking the talk — I’m walking the walk.

On Friday night, me and the moll had dinner at Louisa’s on Jackson Street, which was opening night under new owner Will Riccio. Have to say, the food tasted just as good as it did under the previous owners, Cape May pioneers Louisa Hull and Doug Dietsch, while the decor got a fresh and tasteful revamp. A total home run. Great job, Will!

On Saturday afternoon, I popped into Bliss, on Carpenter’s Lane, where photographer Frank Weiss and I enjoyed an Acai Bowl made by the ice cream shop’s new owner Deena DiBacco, who will be a breath of fresh air in Cape May. Stop in and you’ll see what I mean — she’s adorable and determined to make good, healthy, tasty treats.

So that was lunch. For dinner, I rode my bike to Empanada Mama’s on Park Boulevard in West Cape May, where I picked up a to-go box of empanadas from owner Brooke Dodds, who made her name and reputation at various local festivals before opening her storefront earlier this year. Brooke will be another wonderful addition to the Cape May business community — her smile and sunny attitude are infectious, and her empanadas are great.

a Cape May fellow at the bar of Fred’s Tavern in Stone Harbor (thought I’d get out of town for the night and the first people I see are Cape Mayans...) who said he’d heard that Mayer’s had been bought by Paul and Jennifer Negro, who already have Tisha’s and 5 West. But thanks to the wonders of technology, I quickly discovered that wasn’t true — while eating a fish sandwich (could have used some sauce), I texted Jennifer Negro, who said she and Paul had shown some interest in the place but that they definitely hadn’t bought it. “Welcome to Cape May County rumors,” wrote Jennifer. Since then, I’ve heard that one of the island’s best-known restaurant operators is going to be taking over, but I’ll keep shtum until I get it confirmed.

Whatever happens, I bet it’ll get interesting down there.

Everyone called him Clarkie. Only a few knew his real name — John “Clark” Morris. He could be found at the old Lemon Tree restaurant, the Cape May Marlin and Tuna Club or the Captain’s Cove restaurant, sitting around with the guys telling fish tales. His fishing boat, Screaming Mimi, named after his wife of 50 years, was a familiar sight in the waters of Cape May and he took great pride in talking about his five children (Mari, Lorraine, Madeleine, Clark and Jane), eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He had many business ventures which bore his name, but none had more popularity than the famous 50-cent hot dogs found at Clark’s Dogs on Jackson Street, now the site of HotDog Tommy’s. His life was fully lived and he will be missed.

³ There are great veggie choices (been 15 months since I ate meat), and don’t miss the banana and chocolate for dessert.

So there you have it, folks. A whole weekend of fine eating at establishments owned and operated by people in their 20s and 30s. What’s not to love about that?

Staying with the restaurant theme, a Cape May icon is shortly going to be under new ownership.

Help The Horseshoes You can now sign up to be a part of the ReTURN the favor program, which works with New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to save overturned horseshoe crabs along the Delaware Bay each spring. Last year, volunteers rescued almost 5,000 crabs, which is no small thing, considering what these crabs have done for our own species — the blue blood of the animal is used to test intravenous drugs and vaccines for bacterial contamination.

The existence of the horseshoe crab, which has been around for 400 million years or so (long before the dinosaurs) has been threatened in recent years by over harvesting.

This is especially troubling for the red knot, the shorebird that needs to feed on Delaware Bay horseshoe crab eggs in order to make its yearly 9,000-mile migration. So help the crabs out; sign up at returnthefavornj.org.

olf. What can I say? It is not that I am lost for words on that subject: it was I, after all, who brought the sport to these shores. But what has become of the warrior breed who practised it back in these hard days? The clown pants, the f loppy hats, the garish sweaters, the little electric cars and the accompanying manservant to carry the clubs, all that is frippery and nonsense. I am not, as you know, a fan of the Scottish, but those chaps played golf seriously in my day, wearing chainmail and helmets and with clubs weighing 30lbs, and they considered a hole-in-one to be when the opponent’s head came clean off his shoulders. Those brawny louts taught me all I know about golf (“gowf” as they might pronounce it) and I kept in practice all the way across the Atlantic in our tiny wooden ship.

And just as well, for no sooner had we set foot on land than we were rushed by a howling mob of rag-and-fur-clad savages. Oh hold on, no, I am mixing up my notes for this excitingly pulsating column with my diary for last week, when I vis-

ited Wildwood. On that second occasion I distracted them with thrown handfuls of beads and baubles, and all was well.

Our first golf tourney here was a rough and ready affair, with just one hole, and balls made from the heads of fallen foes.

When I say “made from” I mean “taken off the bodies”. Our foes were a shipload of pirates who had thought to contest our claim to Cape May. Ah, those were the days: even the Young Albert of the day had a club, a tiny five-inch putter he would place carefully on the ground while he savaged an enemy, then tenderly pick

the club up in his teeth and putt severed digits into the hole. He was rather good, I must say. My wood was the talk of the East Coast — a shaft as hard as oak and straight as an arrow. There was not a man who could stand against it.

In time, the game softened, though there were relapses: I remember one night when I was sipping a case of fine single malt with wartime buddies, from The Big Red One, and one thing led to another and we ended up playing 18 holes with live grenades. What a night! Roars of laughter under the full moon, ribbald challenges and the occasional muff led roar and screams. Sadly, the Admiral Hotel was a casualty after a stray drive sent a grenade through an open window.

Now, though, I pass the courses and see fops tapping and swinging like children and giving each other soft high-fives when the ball dribbles into the hole from a yard away. They shriek of birdies and eagles and whirr off in their silly little cars. And do not start me on the clown Trump. For him I would dust off a live one and challenge him to a putting contest.

Making Headlines Never mind the hoopla over the Swimsuit Issue of this year — Cape May was written about by Sports Illustrated in 1960. At the time, there was a huge controversy erupting over whether Stone Harbor to the north should keep its designated bird sanctuary, or whether it should bulldoze the land to build homes.

Writer Bil Gilber called Cape May the “scene of the heron caper,” describing the town as a “flat, fenny, spatula-shaped appendage of land,” adding that, “Swedes, muskrats, smugglers, sand flies, bootleggers, white-tail deer, boardwalk operators, wood ticks and birds” have taken up residence here.

“Cape May is to bird watchers what St Andrews is to golfers,” he wrote. “Local bird clubs from all over the eastern US count the year lost if they do not make at least one pilgrimage there.”

Good news for heron enthusiasts? Mid-April is the time they’ll be returning to our marshes.

T

HIS week, we sat down with Dan Cappelletti, aka Cappy, the 60-year-old, motorcycle-riding patriarch of Cappelletti & Sons Beachfront Pizza, and the owner of the new, much buzzed-about Italian deli on Perry Street. He says he’s never had a day of work he didn’t enjoy, and we set out to find out how this could possibly be…

Where are you from? Originally, 100 miles east of Chicago in a town called Elkhart, Indiana. But my dad was in the concrete business, so we moved when I was very young to Pottstown, Pennsylvania and I was raised there.

When did you leave home? I received a football scholarship to Salem University, but when I got there I couldn’t even read.

Why not? I had ADD in school, which was treated much differently then. Guys with high energy were always in trouble, so I hadn’t learned. But then a little old lady in town took me under her wing and showed me, and I graduated college in 3.5 years with two majors — physical and special education — and three minors. From there, I went on to get my Masters from University of West Virginia.

When did you come to Cape May? I was 28. My first impression when I came over the bridge… I was blown away. It was absolutely beautiful, and I’d had no idea this existed on the east coast. I started teaching special education right away at Lower Cape May Regional High School

and I got a summer job cleaning fish at South Jersey Marina.

What was that like? I imagine… smelly? No, it was quite the opposite, as long as you knew how to clean; my truck was always Clorox-ed down. It was the best job in the world. And my two sons — they were about 10 and 11 at the time — grew up down there. It was a very Huckleberry Fin and Tom Sawyer life for them.

When did you open Cappelletti & Sons Beachfront Pizza on the promenade? That happened in 1989, and it’s still there, though now it’s owned by Pete Mancuso.

Did you have any experience with pizza at the time? My grandmother cooked, and I learned from her. I have four brothers and two sisters, and we all learned to cook from her. She and my grandfather had Cappy’s Italian restaurant in Indiana, so that’s where it all started.

People would come in and everyone was treated like family. My dad is 88 years old now, and I’m still hearing the memories.

I remember him saying, ‘If it’s not fresh, you didn’t get it from here.’

Do you remember the best piece of advice your grandmother ever gave you?

Her English was very broken so she didn’t speak much. The best piece of advice was actually from my grandfather. He said, ‘Don’t worry about anyone stealing from you because money is easy to make.’ And you know what? I don’t. I sleep good at night, and if someone’s stealing from me or anyone else, they’re not sleeping.”

What was your first opening night like? My dad helped me work, and so did my two boys, who were 12 and 13 at the time. I did the cooking and they handled the customers. There was lots of yelling and screaming as Italians do, but it was all love. My boys have been my greatest inspiration in my last 30 years of business. If it weren’t for them, I would never have opened. We molded a relationship that would be tough to break.

Speaking of opening, when did Cappelletti’s Seaside Pizza and Steaks on Texas Avenue, next to the Wawa, come

You’ve had so many employees over the years; what’s it like to watch these young kids grow up? We probably have 30 employees on Texas Avenue in the summer, and I love it. It was the same thing with teaching — it keeps you from getting old. Kids graduate and go, you get a new set, and you get to be 18 all over again.

Do you still use your grandmother’s recipes? Oh yes, that’s her sauce.

And what’s the secret to your pizza?

The dough is made daily, but we hold it for at least 48 to 72 hours. People don’t want that tip out there, but I don’t see why not. Everyone should be able to make nice dough.

Okay, that brings us to the new Cappelletti & Sons Italian Deli on Perry Street. Why open another business? I just always thought this would be a great place for a sandwich shop. My business partner Mark Lare and I used to sit outside of West End Garage and observe. We knew the work it would take to make it happen.

How long was the deli under construction? About a year. Our manager, Carrie Fecca, did all of the tile work. And I give a lot of credit to the city, including the mayor and city manager. I have not done this by myself.

You opened on April 5. How did it go?

Very well. We might have had a few customers walk out because we were just so busy and they didn’t feel like waiting and that’s fine because once they try the product, I’m sure they’ll want to wait. I’ve learned that people will wait if it’s good.

What do you carry? It’s a specialty shop. We have Boar’s Head high-end meats, Di Bruno Brothers cheeses and meats and their whole line, actually. We’ll carry pies and biscotti from Victory Bak-

ery, Italian breads from various purveyors, Lacas coffee — as much coffee as the Wawa does — Bindi specialty desserts, and sandwiches. On opening day, our best-selling sandwich was the Cappelletti, which is prosciutto, salami, roasted red peppers and sharp provolone. We’ll also have homemade tomato pies, pasta to go, and traditional dinners like chicken and eggplant parmesan that come with salad, bread, choice of pasta and cannoli.

When you are open? Right now it’s 7am to 7pm on weekends. During the week, it’s 7am until about 6pm; in the summer, hopefully later. You don’t want to work your guys to death. If you can get out of there by 7pm, that’s like a half a day.

Are your sons still involved at all?

If they want to take this over some day, that’s fine by me. If not, that’s fine, too.

Michael teaches in Ocean City, and Matthew James teaches outside of my hometown.

Any grandkids? I have three beautiful granddaughters, and one grandson on the way. They’re all on the menu at the deli.

Are you happy? Honestly, I don’t really care about money; the best thing about me is my family and friends. I have really nice people in my life and if I died tomorrow, I’d think, ‘That was quick!’ Nobody could feel sorry for me.

Historical Editor Ben Miller picks some of his favorite memories from America’s Original Seaside Resort

F

rom the 1960s to the 1990s, Reverend Carl McIntire, one of America’s best-known evangelists, and leader of the Christian Beacon Press, owned a number of properties in Cape May including the venerable Christian Admiral hotel. As the years went by, McIntire’s religious empire began to crumble and his organization fell into bankrupcy. Once the Christian Admiral and all of Reverend McIntire’s Cape May holdings were sold by the courts, Reverend McIntire penned this letter about the impending 1996 demolition of his beloved Christian Admiral...

“This is a big steal and a great injustice. It would never have happened had the Bible Conference been given its legal right to tax exemption. It was incorporated in the State of New Jersey under Title 15 known as ‘corporations and associations not-for-profit.’ It was a religious activity which charter specifically provided for the spreading of Christianity...

“We used the Christian Admiral and

the Gardner Auditorium with its 2,500 seats and it became the largest bible conference on the east coast in the United States... From the beginning, the city required that we pay a mercantile license each year as though we were a secular business. It denied the application for tax exemption on the Christian Admiral. On appeal, the county denied it but the final tax court in Trenton granted it. The city refused to accept this and went to the secular court which reversed the tax court.

“The Building and Loan in Clifton, NJ, which held the mortgage of a million and a half failed and the Resolution Trust Coorporation took over and moved to foreclosure...

“It was the judge in federal court which took all these actions, selling everything.

All the properties involved were appraised by the city for more than $12 million, but those who now have them paid less than $6 million and the Admiral and the Gardner Auditorium go down. When an appeal was made... so the Admiral could be

saved, the judge dismissed it all.

“All the other religious activities in the city are tax exempt and if the Christian Admiral was forced to pay taxes for 32 years to relieve the public, so should the other religious activities pay similiar taxes. There has been inequality, discrimination and repression which is a great injustice...

“The men who now own the Christian Admiral will make out of it 16 lots, which they expect to bring them around $6 million dollars, thus using the property of the conference to pay for what they received...

In all these years, I personally never received a penny. A mortgage was placed on our private home for $105,000 to make payment on the mortgage of the Christian Admiral... So with all these memories and many blessings that have been bestowed on our labors in Cape May, we bid the city a fond farewell.”

Reverend McIntire was right — the men who owned the Admiral at that point did make 16 lots out of it and sell them for

a substantial profit. One of those men was his grandson, Curtis Bashaw. In reality, the hotel was too far gone to be saved by that point. Bashaw tried to sell the property in the hopes that it could be saved, but after over 50 developers toured it and all passed on purchasing it, citing exorbitant renovation costs, the hotel’s fate was sealed.

This year, around 70 students and staff members from Lower Cape May Regional High School and Richard M. Teitelman Middle School raised money for the St Baldrick’s Foundation, which funds pediatric cancer research. Then they shaved their heads in a show of solidarity. “It’s looking like we passed our $40,000 goal,” says language arts teacher Anthony D’Aleo. “It makes me proud to see students being so selfless.”

Keeping Track Summer Station condotel was named for West Jersey Railroad’s summer train station, which was built in 1863 and stood at the corner of Grant and Beach, where the Ocean View diner is today. It was called the Summer Station because it only operated during the summer.

There was a second train station on the corner of Washington and Ocean, where Victorian Commons is today. That was used by locals and Cape May merchants, who used the rail to ship and receive freight. There was also a third station, the original, located at the corner of Bank and Broad, where the new HomeStead Real Estate office has replaced the long-shuttered former Wawa.

Getting back to the old Grant Street Summer Station, what is now Park Boulevard was originally the path for the train tracks. Once the Summer Station was demolished, the tracks were removed and the street was created in their place.

A

fter a stubborn winter like this one, it seems fitting that the spring holidays are late this year.

Like an impolite house guest, winter overstayed its welcome.

While we understand that we have to pay the tab for those many, many snow days with shortened school vacations, we’re not happy about it, and we don’t need those weathermen reminding us that snow has been known to fall in New Jersey through mid-April. The best way to chase away those winter nightmares is to spend a couple of days strolling Cape May. Easter and Passover are floating holidays whose dates change every year. Passover begins on April 14 and Easter Sunday is April 20. The ancient celebration of Passover commemorates the Hebrews’ exodus from slavery in Egypt and begins on the 15th day of Nisan, the seventh month in the Jewish calendar. Easter celebrates the resurrection of Christ and generally falls on the Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox. Under the church’s calendar, the equinox is fixed on March 21 and that first

full moon is an ecclesiastical moon rather than an observed moon. For Protestant and Roman Catholic churches who use the Gregorian calendar, Easter may fall between March 22 and April 25. Eastern Orthodox Christian churches use the Julian calendar, and they celebrate Easter between April 4 and May 8. This year, the calendars coincide.

Whatever you celebrate, Cape May is where you should celebrate. Have breakfast with the Easter Bunny at the Harbor View on April 19 from 9am to 11:30. The menu includes green eggs and ham, for you

The Easter Bunny will be there, along with treats courtesy of The Original Fudge Kitchen and Dairy Queen. Bring your camera. Look for treats and specials from merchants all along the mall.

Pam Dorr is executive director of Hale Empowerment Revitalization Organization (HERO) a grass-roots non-profit organization, which creates local development opportunities that celebrate the community. Dorr is an entrepreneur who turned a town around and will talk about her success in “Going Local.”

T

his time of year all the talk and most of the focus in the birding world is on spring arrivals.

There are certain “marker species” whose appearance in our region heralds the onset of spring.

Nonbirders have, I suspect, a similar countdown but I their focus differs and might include such seasonally linked events as pothole season, first dandelions in the lawn, and income tax deadline.

For birders the seasonal lineup begins with the red-winged blackbird (as early as January), then the first courting woodcock in February, followed by the arrival of the first osprey in March. In very point of fact that milestone was passed yesterday. Hence this column.

I’m pleased to report that after five or six months in South America one of our local osprey returned yesterday. The bird was about a week behind schedule, which is only significant because every day that passed without an osprey sighting made me more eager to find one.

I’ve seen thousands of osprey on five continents but none is more prized than

While the Summer Station condotel was not the site of the old Grant Street Summer Station, the property was used by the railroad. In 1868, West Jersey Railroad built the Sea Breeze excursion house where the Beach Shack stands today, while out buildings like stables and bath houses were built on the condotel property next door.

Railroad tracks led directly to the Sea Breeze so that guests would not have to be inconvenienced by the one-block walk from the Summer Station used by other sojourners.

There were also trolley tracks that led to Cape May Point. This fact was made clear to the current owners of the Beach Shack, who had planned to raze the aging hotel and replace it with an upscale complex.

During testing of the soil in 2008, numerous chemicals, oil and other byproducts from the railroad tracks were found in the ground, even though it had been nearly a century since trains traversed the property.

Next up on the seasonal hit parade will be the arrival of laughing gull. Next upve will be the waves of warblers that wash through our region in April and May en route to Canadian-zone woodlands.

Quite unlike osprey, laughing gulls have a fairly limited range — limited to coastal portions of eastern North America. Honesty compels me to admit that I did once see laughing gulls in Australia where they are almost as rare as laughing lookaburra are here.

As gulls go, laughing gull ranks among the most handsome so, with osprey now in the bag, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my first LAGU of the year. Chances are I’ll hear it before I see it. Laughing gulls arrive with their bills wide open. They are a major component of the brass section in the symphony of sound that is Summer in Cape May. Keep your ears to the sky and mind your French fries.

the first osprey of spring. It’s a bird we might have lost because of DDT. Happily, numbers are again high. The bird is common in South Jersey and I have a hunch that the number of birds nesting on the banks of the Maurice River might constitute the highest breeding density in the world.

Bad news for menhaden fish, but good news for people who want to admire this large golden-eyed, fish-eating bird of prey. It’s also good news for bald eagles, who pirate fish from osprey.

Fending Off The Ocean The promenade and the seawall are two different things. Immediately after the destructive 1962 nor’easter, concrete barriers were installed along Beach Avenue to protect the city from further flooding caused by erosion of the beach.

They’re still there today, visible from the street (the promenade was built on top of them).

Once the barriers were up, Mayor Walter C. Wright shared with city council an article he had read about another town that faced repeated storm damage like Cape May. Their solution was to replace their boardwalk with a seawall and concrete promenade. Cape May did likewise.

The seawall extends down below sea level and is 40 feet wide at the base. It tapers to 10 feet wide on top and runs parallel to the promenade, which was built on top of debris and landfill stacked between the seawall and those concrete barriers.

es Anderson is an Oscar nominated writer/director but his is not exactly a household name. Neither are his films. And yet he has a following that is as unmistakable as his style and storytelling. The director’s latest work is The Grand Budapest Hotel, a tale of a grandiose luxury resort in its heyday during the 1930s. The adventure centers on Gustavo (played by Ralph Fiennes), the concierge who (for reasons you may suspect) entertains elderly women of great wealth. The new lobby boy, Zero Moustafa, played by relative newcomer Tony Revolon, quickly becomes Gustave’s pupil and confidant.

The two steal a priceless piece of art gifted in the will of Gustave’s former lover — well, one of many former lovers anyway. And the trouble begins.

Better than telling you who was in the movie, it may be easier for me tell you who was not in the movie. So George Clooney was not in this movie — or was he (look closely for about three seconds during the shootout scene — sure looks like Clooney).

So who is in the movie? F. Murray Abraham,

Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton, Tom Wilkinson, Owen Wilson… and so on.

These are some of Hollywood’s more quirky actors. That’s okay, because this is one of the more quirky flicks you’ll see this year. In fact if you like quirky, it’s actually a must-see. All of Anderson’s movies are must sees if you’re interested in highly

stylized, decidedly Anderson quirkiness.

Moonrise Kingdom (2012) and Fantastic Mr Fox (2009) and way back to The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) were all well-loved by his fans (and incidentally all of those films got him Oscar nominations).

This film, like his others, for as sharp as they are in their directing and cinematography, drifts a little along the way in telling a story that is otherwise very good. The film gets gruesome at times with dark humor that I admittedly did not always appreciate.

However, one can undoubtedly admire the directorial style (dare I say panache?) with which Anderson spins his tale.

So you don‘t know Andersen or his work? Ask yourself, “Do I like offbeat and sometimes dark humor?” If the answer is yes, then perhaps see The Grand Budapest Hotel — or better still take in a few of Anderson’s other work mentioned here and then go see this movie.

Lower Cape May Regional High School Student Of The Week This week, we chat to Samantha Lizak, who played Wendy Darling in LCMR’s spring production of Peter Pan. Before coming to LCMR, where did you attend school and what was the experience like? At 15 I left home to pursue a career in ballet. I lived with my cousin in Media, Pennsylvania and attended The Rock School for Dance Education. I had to take a trolley and two subways every day to get to school. The school life at the Rock was very competitive. We would have two ballet classes a day, dancing about 30 hours a week, fitting school work in between. A lot was expected of you.

What other activities are you involved in at LCMR? I am involved in Peer Leaders, fall play, spring musical and Future Business Leaders of America.

Did you enjoy playing Wendy Darling? It will be one of my fondest memories of my high school career.

What was the most recent event you attended for Future Business Leaders of America? This past weekend I attended the Future Business Leaders of America 2014 State Leadership Conference in New

Brunswick, New Jersey. The event is a two-day event where all of the New Jersey chapters of FBLA come together to compete in different events. I competed in Public Speaking II and got fourth place.

Were you expecting to place fourth and how did you feel when you heard

the news? Honestly, I was not expecting to place. I was ecstatic, but also nervous because that meant that I had to deliver my speech again the next morning to a new panel of judges.
