SOMA NewArt Gallery debuts its 2014 season with an Artists Opening Reception on Saturday, April 26 that features three solo exhibitions by regional artists: Stephen Steinmetz, Leslie Martel, and Carol King Hood.

Steinmetz’s “SideShow” is a collection of new paintings, woodcarvings, and dioramas that are eclectic, delightful and intriguing. For this exhibit Steinmetz has engaged his lighter side. Entertainment is the theme of Sideshow — at once funky, clever and even thought provoking.

Steinmetz draws on his years at sea as both a fisherman and later as a government observer for the National Marine Fisheries Administration. These personal life experiences and his quirky and sometime political interests are the influences that contribute to creating this new commanding body of work. Steinmetz is a master ‘hand’ woodcarver; many pieces will be on display in this exhibit.

“Just Desserts,” new watercolor paintings by Leslie Martel, is an ode to a world obsessed with food. “There are food blogs, food shows, food columns, food magazines, and I am also one of those foodies. Martel and her husband Myles have traveled extensively, and “we often admire and photograph particularly beautiful food presentations. As an artist, I began painting from some of those photographs and gravitated to the ones depicting desserts. The more I painted the more I wanted to show desserts and food as art!” Martel’s strong command of watercolor is exemplified in her artistic use of bright colors and delicate flowing brush strokes, all blending together to creating the base for her recipes.

Martel isa a dedicated student of local artist and teacher, Marie Natale.She resides in Cape May, New Jersey and Palm Beach, Florida.

Carol King Hood’s new work is entitled “Red”... “because red is the first of the primary colors and first on my spectrum. She paints whimsical fairies, impressionistic landscapes and bold abstracts for this new show.

Hood teaches in all mediums at her studio in Cape May Point. She is a member of the Perkins Center of the Arts, Moorestown, NJ, Cape May County Art League, and the National Watercolor Society, and a member of the Oil Painters of America.

The exhibit will be on view at SOMA NewArt Gallery, in Carpenter’s Square Mall, Perry Street, from April 26 to May 26.

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ‘n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ormer West Cape May Mayor Leroy Reeves is a resident of the mobile home park he designed, Westwood Mobile Estates on Stimpson Lane. At one point, this land was occupied by a farm owned

by Leroy’s family, and he grew up here. Leroy is in his 80s now, but he has clear memories of being a fourth-grade boy. It was at this time Leroy met his “sweetheart,” Fay York, who lived just down the road, across from strawberry fields, in the Stimpson Lane house where Exit Zero was born and where I still live. Of Fay’s siblings — Ray, Gay and Kay — Leroy connected most with the little brother called Ray. “We spent hours and hours playing games like croquet in the backyard of that house on Stimpson,” he says. “Ray was an ornery boy; he once bit the butt of a kid who’d been picking on him on the school bus! We had some fun, I’ll tell ya.” (Note: Horticulturally, things have gone downhill since Leroy’s day — these days, my “lawn” is more suited to mountain biking than croquet.)

Unfortunately, Ray’s Coastie father was transferred shortly after Leroy’s fourth-grade year to a base in California, and Ray and Leroy lost touch. But on Leroy’s 38th year, he received his horse-racing papers in the mail — he always followed the happenings at the track closely, and even owned some race horses himself — and he saw that Ray York would be riding in Atlantic City shortly. He had his wife Rhoda call out of work, and the two of them headed to the track, where Ray was able to reconnect with his childhood friend.

In 1954, Ray won the Kentucky Derby, riding Determine, the first-ever winning gray horse, across the finish line. The jockey retired in 1992, after winning 3,082 races across a record seven decades. He lives in Santa Anita, California, but across the country, in the home of his friend Leroy, still hangs a picture from the ’54 derby signed by Ray. It reads: “Best of luck from your Cape May friend on Stimpson Lane.”

Now isn’t that a sweet, and timely story? Enjoy the derby on May 3 — it’s always a fun time around town.

This column has never been known to sit on the fence, but I really am in two minds about the plan

to add what’s essentially a promenade to the beach in North Cape May, or Town Bank, if you want to take a more local view. The environmentalist in me dislikes the idea of adding a big slab of concrete to what is a beautifully rustic, authentic slice of beach and dunes. The Cape May cheerleader in me thinks there is real merit to adding such an amenity to an area that is famous for its sunsets.

Apparently, Lower Township municipality is in two minds about it, too. After initially voting unanimously to seek $900,000 funding from the county to get the promenade built, they are now going to take some time to consider the plan, having received a less than warm welcome from locals. I hope that both sides take some time to get to know the facts, and full implications, of the plan before getting too hot and heavy with their opinions.

Speaking of Cape May cheerleading, the city has received yet another boost from the media.

Regular readers of this column will know that our beaches have been fawned over by many websites and magazines.

Helping Our Families Proceeds from the May 10 Cape May Footrace (visit capemaychamber.com) benefit Family Promise of Cape May County, which works to keep homeless families together by providing them with shelter in local houses of worship. Family Promise Director Laurie Johnson told us about a couple with two young girls who’d been used to bringing in $80,000 a year… until they lost their jobs and their home. Because a traditional shelter could not have taken all four family members, one of the daughters went to a friend’s house; another to a relative’s. The father, who’d been sleeping under a Wildwood bridge, thought to inquire about Family Promise, which was able to place the group in one of their church shelters. Now, thanks largely to the resources provided by this organization, this is just one of many families in our area now back on their feet.

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

have just watched that fine piece of film-making, Point Break, on the televisual set. I was actually looking for Little Dogs Shopping Channel, as Young Albert needs a set of stairs to climb on the kitchen worktop on his own (he does like crepes of a morning, and thanks to his “No Need For An Opposable Thumb Crepe Pan”, he can rustle up a very fine serving on his own) without needing to wake the household, except he is too little to get up to the range.

Anyways, I paused for breath around the 00s channels, and thought for a moment that it was footage of my good self as a young man, surfing on a local beach (people do tell me I bear a striking resemblance to a Patrick Swayze in his Roadhouse period). By the time I realized it was in fact a movie about Swayze and some chums enjoying a homoerotic summer vacation, I was hooked. By the end, there was not a dry eye in the D’Catur Mansion, I can tell you. Of course we all agreed that Bodhi had actually paddled off to New Zealand, as he had joked to Utah, knowing the policeman was so stu-

pid that he would not for a second think this likely.

Of course in my day such waves were commonplace in Cape May. Surfers used to f lock from all over the world to see how we did it (the sport was in its infancy in these days, so “all over the world” meant a wee distance up the coast, and a gaggle from California) and gaze in awe as we padded out in our tweed wetsuits, on our ivory-and-India-rubber boards, ready to battle the elements. We had no fancy equipment, no sponsors (other than Ernie Hemingway’s peculiar habit of yelling

loudly as he stood up on his racing board, “I LOVE Uncle Bill’s Pancakes!”, and the ensuing free pancake extravaganza) and no exciting surf culture as such ( we certainly had no “surf nazis”, as the movie had, I can tell you, though we did have a “surf commie” named Ivan, who my unit had picked up in The War and who collected Fascist ears on a string) though we did strip buck naked afterwards so as to dry our tweed suits on the boards (if you have ever worn wet tweed you will understand: the fabric is a wonder, but it plays havoc with a gent’s private parts when damp), and drink malt whisky while wandering vagabonds from Wildwood played jigs on the accordion around a bonfire on the beach, and carouse til dawn. Oh, and there were knife fights over the cash-only poker game that inevitably sprung up, and someone always produced a toad that when rubbed on the chest induced startling hallucinations, but really, I think young surfing readers today probably have way more fun on the beach. Am I not right, Youth of Cape May? Of course I am, so cheer up, you lot.

Dear Answer Lady My best friend Newt is the nicest person you’d ever want to know, except when it comes to money. Every Saturday, we hang out at Carney’s with four other guys who went to college with us. We each take turns buying a round. EVERYTIME it is Newt’s turn, he either disappears into the bathroom or hides behind a pole. Every time I bring up the subject, he diverts the conversation. He was never like this in college, but I realized that in those days, he bought the rounds on his dad’s credit card. What should I do? – Conflicted Dear Conflicted; The answer to this is simple. STOP buying rounds. Are you kidding me? (Visualize the Answer Lady rolling her eyes.) Now that is the simple solution. The more devious one is as follows: Make an arrangement

with the bartender to make it look as though one of you has bought the round which your buddy should have bought. When he appears from the shadows, wait until the beer is in his hand and he has taken his first sip or gulp as the case may be. Then, the rest of you disappear back into the shadows and watch his face as the bartender asks him to pony up. Of course, he may never speak to you again, until the next round, but a small price to pay for a lesson learned.

Dear Answer Lady A close friend of mine asked me to take care of her chihuahua while she is away. I agreed, but then she called me before she left to ask me to come over so she could show me how to light the fireplace. I asked why I needed to know that when it was 60 degrees outside and no one was going to be in the house. She replied, “Fluffy likes to sit by the fireplace at night and I don’t want her to suffer separation anxiety.” I started laughing. She retorted that I was “obviously not worthy of Fluffy” and she would find someone else to watch him, and hung up. I feel I have lost a friend. – Anxiety Ridden Dear Anxiety Ridden People are very sensitive about their pets. Note the baby carriages and baby carriers filled with four-legged, furry “babies” seen on the mall on any given day. I recommend you let the dust settle. When you do see her, gently tell her about local pet sitters (The Doggie Nanny is wonderful), who make separation anxiety on both the part of the owner and the pet evaporate, and who would be in a better position to deal with fireplace issues.

F

easting on History restaurant gala is happening May 6 and since it’s one of the biggest events of the season (see hscv.org), we sat down with Annie and Joe Salvatore for this issue’s Big Q&A. Joe and Annie run Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum at Cape May County Airport, which is where Feasting will take place, and they also run Historic Cold Spring Village, the open-air history museum that will benefit from Feasting proceeds. Since Anne is point-person on the Village, she answered most of our questions, but Joe (who was feeling poorly that day) chimed in at the end.

Here’s what the couple — globe-trotters, award-winning preservationists and volunteers with the nonprofit Volunteers in Medicine — had to say about their own Cape May story...

How did you meet? Joe was an orthopedic surgeon, and he came to Englewood Hospital in North Jersey where I was teaching nursing. There was a very sick patient who was in traction, and I was in the room with the students explaining about fracture care when Joe came in. He was all bubbly and happy. I thought he was the patient’s son, and then I found out he was the new orthopedist.

How old were you at the time? I was probably 23 or 24.

Joe was 31.

Was it love at first sight? You could say that.

What brought you to Cape May? I’m from North Jersey

but Joe is from Wildwood, so we came to this area often to visit his mother. In 1968, when my son was eight months old, we bought a house in Cold Spring that became our summer and weekend home. Then we had our second child, and as the kids started getting older, we realized we needed a project. My husband is one of those visionaries who can’t sit still. He’s either fast forward or asleep, but never in between.

And that’s how the Village came about? Yes, we owned 35 acres of woods in Cold Spring and we thought it would be fun and exciting to start a restored village. Both of us liked history.

Where does your love of history stem from? My family was history-oriented. My cousin was the first director of the National Trust, and as a very young person, I would April 24-May 7, 2014 EXIT ZERO Page 59

THE EXIT ZERO Q&A From Page 59 spend time with my grandmother and great aunt in the Brooklyn Museum. They have six rooms there that were taken out of Dutch houses along the Hudson River, and one had a loft. As a child, I fit inside the loft, and I just love it.

Was the town on board with the idea of a restored village right away? We had to go in front of the Lower Township Zoning Commission, and I think it took about a year-and-a-half before they were totally comfortable with it. They had reservations because they weren’t sure exactly where we were going with it.

Were YOU sure of the direction? Our feeling was 19th century. Cape May city was already Victorian, and the post-Revolutionary, pre-Civil War era is a very dynamic time in this country. It was the Jacksonian era of democracy, it was the Bill of Rights… all sort of great things were happening. Most of the towns on the eastern seaboard were very similar — they had a baker, a butcher, a candlestick maker… the kinds of trades and crafts we have represented in the village. We found buildings all over the county from this time period and had them moved.

Were there any moments of doubt? Yes, there were many. I can remember contractors working on the village in the 70s, and

there was a point they needed to be paid. I called my husband on the phone — he was doing surgery and seeing patients — and I said, ‘I need money.’ He’d put the money in, and I’d take it out to meet payroll. Crazy.

Give me a great piece of Village trivia.

Wherever we go, we take pictures of things we think would be great. It was in Disney’s Magic Kingdom that we saw the pillory stock and we loved it. With our two little kids we were running around taking measurements and when we came home, we had it built. People sometimes want to know why we have it, since the pillory stock is colonial, but in 1880, there was a pillory stock in Cape May Court House.

Fondest memory? There are times in the village when it’s closed and you’re sitting on one of the benches and it’s just incredibly peaceful. One of our interpreters was interviewed by CBS news years ago, and she said that being here restores her soul. I think a fair number of visitors come to the village just to feel the ambiance of it. Not that long ago, I walked by a cute-looking couple standing in front of the Dennisville Inn. They looked like a lot of couples – Bermuda shorts and a baby in a stroller – but I noticed the man had tears in his eyes. He told me he is from Poland, and that this building looks exactly like one in his home town. It was very moving; you

could see how touched he was by it.

Did your kids enjoy growing up in the Village? It was pain and pleasure. I ran the restaurant for the first summer, which was not anticipated, and our daughter and son helped at ages 10 and 12. I think at one point it was probably too much. There was a lot of responsibility.

Where are your kids now? They are both psychiatrists — she at Princeton University and he at a private practice in Princeton.

Grandkids? We have five. The oldest is 11 and the youngest are twins who were born three months ago. They are our pride and joy.

I’m guessing they will grow up to be… doctors? The kids really are inundated by medicine wherever they turn. My son’s wife is an orthodontist. My husband’s brother is a retired OB-GYN surgeon and his wife is one of the foremost geneticists in the country.

Tell me about the genesis of the Naval Air Station. We moved down here permanently in 1992; my husband decided he wanted early retirement. It wasn’t long before he said, ‘This is it; I have to have a project.’ One day, he was over at the Cape May County Airport with Vic Di Sylvester, a high school friend who was in charge of the airport at the time. Somehow, they got

to talking, he turned to Joe and said, ‘See that building over there? That’s a World War II hangar and former dive bomber training squadron. I’ll let you have it for a dollar.’ Joe said, ‘Okay, sold.’ His brother had worked there during World War II, so he knew the hangar well.

And you are a veteran as well, Joe? Yes. I was in the medical corps.

Were you in on this plan, Annie? He came home and said, ‘I just bought a hangar.’ I said, ‘Okay, that sounds exciting.’

And the shape of the building was... what? [Annie] There was a hole in the roof 100 by 150-feet, and bird excrement on the floor a foot high in places! [Joe] But then we got it on the National Register which was the segue for grant money. We’ve received $4 million to present day. We started collecting war airplanes, and now we have 26, and a boat and a humvee. We just keep progressing on.

Tell me the utmost, without-a-doubt craziest thing you’ve ever done. [Annie] We took seaplane flying lessons once, and we went motorhoming across the county.

We’ve been all around the world, but our greatest adventure has been finding each other and creating our family and the Village and the hangar, because it really is an adventure for us every day. [Joe] We love each other very much.

A Road Well Traveled Sunset Boulevard, previously known as Cape Island Turnpike, was once the major avenue for visitors arriving to Cape May. Next time you visit Sunset Beach, take a look out at what’s left of the SS Atlantus. The concrete former US Navy troop transport ship is almost completely entrenched in the sands and submerged below the water. It was brought to Cape May by Colonel Jesse Rosenfeld in 1926 and anchored just offshore. On June 8 of that year, it broke free of its moorings and became stuck in the sands.

Decades before the Atlantus occupied that spot, thousands of visitors to Cape May were standing just above its final resting place on the decks of the steamship Republic.

The Cape’s first steamship landing was located directly across from Sunset Boulevard and it was shaped like a T with a long walkway that led to a landing for passengers to embark and disembark from different steamships.

What better place to start than right here in Cape May? During the Victorian era, conservation was a new idea, and Roosevelt was an early proponent. Scholars and amateur naturalists saw a growing need to protect nature from human advancement. The same railroads that pushed progress westward also cut damaging slices through the wilderness. Bison that had once obscured prairie horizons were hunted down to near-extinction.

As a boy, Roosevelt had been prescribed nature as an antidote for frail health, and he fell in love with the great outdoors. As president, he pushed to preserve nature’s health for future generations. In May, 1908, he spoke in favor of balancing progress and protection, saying, “We have just reason to be proud of our growth. But the time has come to inquire seriously what will happen when our forests are gone, when the coal, the iron, the oil and the gas are exhausted, when the soils have been

still further impoverished and washed into the streams, polluting the rivers, denuding the fields, and obstructing navigation.”

Roosevelt set aside an area roughly the size of the Eastern Seaboard — 230 million acres — for forests, preserves, parks and monuments. Pelican Island, Florida is the site of the first federal wildlife refuge, established by presidential order in 1903. The breeding ground of the brown pelican, Pelican Island was a favorite spot for hunters seeking grand birds for the sake of their fashionable feathers, which

were worth more than their weight in gold. Roosevelt’s order sought balance by banning the hunting of water birds, but allowing big-game hunting.

Cape May County has its own refuge.

Established in 1989, Cape May National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 11,500 grassy, boggy, marshy acres within the Cape May Peninsula, where many birds stop on their annual migrations.

Bird Droppings

Double Jeopardy The property that is now home to Camelot Motel, on Howard Street, was the site of two large fires, six decades apart. The first building on the property was a the Marine Villa, a smaller hotel originally built to look identical to the Carroll Villa.

It was constructed in 1872 and additions were added in the 1880s and again in the 1890s.

By the time the hotel caught fire and burned to the ground on March 26, 1903, it had been more than doubled in size. The lot sat empty until the Marine Casino was built in 1913. It was a venue for music and live theater.

The Marine Casino later became the Green Mill, a members-only club for cottagers that was not open to locals. It hosted scores of Cape May Capers shows, along with Port and Starboard balls. All that ended in 1965 after a fire that grew out of control because local firefighters were already at a blaze on Elmira Street, in the city center.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

E

very time I travel, I return with a heightened appreciation for the wealth of birds we, as Cape May and Greater Cape May residents, enjoy. I’m not saying California is not a bird-rich state. But while trying to show my mother -in-law a very uncooperative yellow warbler, I was struck by how much easier this would be here.

It’s the sheer volume of birds that makes Cape May so compelling. The rich species diversity is just a bonus. How many species? About 350 every year, which isn’t bad for a non-tropical habitat.

So why not take a moment and go out and savor a bit of Cape May’s rich natural dowry. You don’t need to be an experienced bird-watcher. In fact it’s better that you are not. You don’t have to be able to pin a name to it to appreciate it.

Just go out and savor. The birds don’t know our names for them either.

Binoculars help. They confer supernatural intimacy. But binoculars are not essential. By watching a bird with your unaided eye, you are better able to see it in context with its environment.

So stop reading. Go outside. Get to know your feathered neighbors. The loud caroling one is an American robin. The one with the hurried cheery song that warbles like a happy drunk is house finch. The one that repeats everything several times, then switches to a new phrase, is northern mockingbird. The loud one that repeats the same note over and over is northern cardinal — cheer, cheer, cheer, cheer, cheer.

The Movie Column

Three Times A Charm The Washington Street Mall has been dedicated three times. The most recent occurred in 2008, after the three-block shopping district was renovated from the ground up.

The concrete walkways, fencing and trees and flowers were all replaced.

The first two dedications are the most interesting because they’ve been a bone of contention between different groups for decades. The discrepancy goes to the heart of the battle between preservation and urban renewal. The only thing both groups were able to agree upon was that the mall was a great idea for the city. Prior to construction, Mayor Frank Gauvry had faced opposition from nearly every direction.

The official dedication was in June of 1971, by Mayor Gauvry. After preservationist leader Bruce Minnix became mayor in 1972, he made some changes to the mall and held a second dedication, complete with a ceremonial ribbon cutting.

O

f all the comic book characters, I’ve always liked Captain America the most. Why? Well, all of them have their virtues (some of them vices for sure), but Captain America embraces and embodies the spirit of what I want America to be.

We start with a regular guy named Steve Rogers who believes in truth, integrity and freedom and he’s willing to put his life on the line to protect them.

No compromises, no inner angst, and no secret identity.

In The Winter Soldier, Captain America, as he was in The Avengers, is a World War II super-soldier living in today’s world, having been in a sort of frozen suspended animation for about 70 years.

As the movie opens, Captain America is sent to rescue a merchant vessel that’s been captured by pirates. On the mission, he teams up with the Black Widow (another Marvel superhero) and the pirates are in very serious trouble. We quickly learn that SHIELD agents, the good guys, may have been infiltrated by

bad guys — and the fun begins.

This movie asks how much we are willing to sacrifice our freedom to ensure our safety, a pretty timely topic. An action movie that makes you think a little? Sounds strange, but it works. The movie gives a clear nod to the 1970s spy films that ask who the good guys really are, such as 1975’s Three Days of the Condor.

That excellent film, by the way, starred

Robert Redford, who also appears in The Winter Soldier.

The acting is very good, especially how Chris Evans plays Captain America very earnestly and very believably. The Black Widow is played by Scarlett Johansson who I have yet to see make a mistake.

She gets a lot of screen time in The Winter Soldier, and the film is better for it.

The film has a great look, mostly set in Washington DC, where the street scenes were very realistic, particularly in comparison to other movies that supposedly took place there. I also have to note that part of the movie takes place in New Jersey, which is always a plus. The directors used less CGI, and that gave the movie a more realistic feel. Finally, if you see it, stay through the credits — ALL the credits. Trust me.

One last comment about Captain America... I once had the honor of working for a US Navy Admiral who had his qualities, and I’d have followed him anywhere. It may seem like so much stuff to you as you sit and read this, but I’ve been there and I can tell you it’s real.

ower Cape May Regional High School junior, Pete Mayer, 16 of Villas, is a student who is a pleasure to teach. Recently, Pete participated in the popular St. Baldrick’s event, having his head shaved to help raise funds for pediatric cancer research. We chatted about his inspirations and aspirations...

What influenced you to be so enthusiastic about academics? I would have to say all of my great teachers that lead me in the right direction day after day.

Who is your most influential teacher?

That would have to be English teacher, Ms Jackie Siscone, because she has such a positive outlook on life that she conveys to the class as she teaches.

What is your favorite subject? English because I can express myself through my writing.

How do you balance academics and athletics? It is tough at times, but hard work and having no distractions always helps. I always have a goal set in mind that allows me to achieve success.

What activities are you involved in? Ice Hockey; Track, Future Business

thing great just felt amazing. Nothing compared to it.

How do you maintain such a great attitude? I have always just been raised to have a positive attitude and outlook on life.

What influenced you to participate in St Baldricks? It was a great opportunity to help people who unfortunately are facing a disease. The event allowed each participant to raise money for pediatric cancer research, and I was able to raise $360 for the foundation.

Do you have any other hobbies outside of school? I have been surfing since I was in third grade. It is something that I enjoy tremendously and it allows me to simply have fun and release some built-up energy.

What are your future plans? I know that I want to stay in New Jersey; however I am not sure which school I want to attend yet. I do have a very strong passion for the science field, so I hope to pursue a career in science, majoring in bio-chemistry.
