SOMA NewArt Gallery made its 2014 season recently with an opening that features three solo exhibitions by regional artists: Carol King Hood, Stephen Steinmetz and Leslie Martel. Carol King Hood’s new work is entitled “Red”... “because red is the first of the primary colors and first on my spectrum. I dream in brilliant colors.” In this exhibit, Hood’s work zigzags between her many styles of Impressionism, Realism, and Abstraction. Hood is a true colorist at heart; her brilliant colors and strong painterly brush strokes capture the essence of her subjects’ whether real or fanciful. She paints whimsical fairies, impressionistic landscapes and bold abstracts for this new show. Hood teaches in all mediums at her studio in Cape May Point. She is a member of the Perkins Center of the Arts, Moorestown, NJ, Cape May County Art League, and the National Watercolor Society, and a member of the Oil Painters of America. Steinmetz’s “SideShow” is a collection of new paintings, woodcarvings, and dioramas that are eclectic, delightful and intriguing. For this exhibit Steinmetz has engaged his lighter side. Entertainment is the theme of Sideshow — at once funky, clever and even thought provoking. Steinmetz draws on his years at sea as both a fisherman and later as a government observer for the National Marine Fisheries Administration. These personal life experiences and his quirky and sometime political interests are the influences that contribute to creating this new commanding body of work. Steinmetz is a master ‘hand’ woodcarver; many pieces will be on display in this exhibit. “Just Desserts,” new watercolor paintings by Leslie Martel, is an ode to a world obsessed with food. “There are food blogs, food shows, food columns, food magazines, and I am also one of those foodies. Martel and her husband Myles have traveled extensively, and “we often address on the master list of participating yard sales More info: 884-1005 What: Spring Sidewalk Sale When: May 15-May 18, 9am-7pm Where: Washington Street Mall How much: The price of whatever you buy! “Under the Yellow Umbrella” from Carol King Hood’s show at SOMA admire and photograph particularly beautiful food presentations. As an artist, I began painting from some of those photographs and gravitated to the ones depicting desserts. The more I painted the more I wanted to show desserts and food as art!” Martel’s strong command of watercolor is exemplified in her artistic use of bright colors and delicate flowing brush strokes, all blending together to creating the base for her recipes. Martel is a dedicated student of local artist and teacher, Marie Natale. She resides in Cape May, New Jersey and Palm Beach, Florida. The exhibit will be on view at SOMA NewArt Gallery, in Carpenter’s Square Mall, Perry Street, through May 26.

FAREWELL TO CHARLOTTE D W

BY SUSAN TISCHLER

e called her The Parade Lady. Tenacious and devoted, she single-handedly created a tradition which celebrates 49 years this December. Although her goal was to ride in the 50th annual West Cape May Christmas Parade, sadly that will not happen. Charlotte Warner Daily died April 30 after a short illness at the age of 82. She started the West Cape May Christmas Parade in 1965 when the City of Cape May cancelled their parade because of bad weather. Determined that her 4-H Club kids, the Snappers, would have a Christmas parade in which to ride their prize-winning float, Charlotte marched over to West Cape May Mayor Ed Smith’s house and proposed that West Cape May start their own parade. He agreed, so long as there was no cost to the borough. She took $45 out of her cookie jar and by the end of that first parade people were asking her about next year and already calling her The Parade Lady Charlotte’s fascination with parades began as a child when her mother made her costumes for the local parades. In high school she played the saxophone, marching in every parade possible. She always wanted to be in show business, but never wanted to leave her beloved Cape Island. In a 2006 interview, writer Karen Fox described Charlotte as “a showboat of a person who wishes life would have put her on stage, singing and dancing in the bright lights of Broadway. Instead she lives on Broadway, in West Cape May, and lights up her street every year with her big heart and uncanny ability to produce one of the best old-fashioned hometown parades in America.” A fourth generation Cape May native, Charlotte married the love of her life, H. Gene Daily, on Coast Guard Day, August 4, 1950. They met at the Coast Guard canteen, where Charlotte was a volunteer. She sold her saxophone and her boat so they could buy a house at 123 Broadway for $5,000. She and Gene raised their five children — Vicky, Jeanette, Bud, Bill and Becky — in that house. Charlotte lived there until her death. She grew up on Schellenger’s Landing by the Thoroughfare Bridge (the one that does not open anymore). Her father, Ray Warner, managed a food market on Washington Street and her grandmother, Rebecca Mills, ran Becky Mill’s candy and ice cream store on Schellenger’s Landing. A 1949 graduate of Cape May High School, Charlotte was clerk for the Borough of West Cape May from 1970 until her retirement in 1991. When Charlotte started the West Cape May Christmas Parade, her love of music, dance, showbiz and people fused together. She was the steel in the velvet glove when it came to organizing the event. Videographer and West Cape May resident Henrie Washington says, “She was one of a kind and we all knew her as a lady who pulled no punches and always told it like it was. She was hands-on and always on the front line. And of course, we all respected that and listened to what she had to say whether we wanted to or not.” Five years ago, Charlotte’s daughter, Jeanette Urquhart, saw that the parade was becoming too much for her mother and told her she needed to get help if the parade was to continue after she was gone. They enlisted the aid of West Cape May Mayor Pam Kaithern. “Charlotte is very tenacious and very determined,” recalled Mayor Kaithen in a telephone interview. “And so when I started working with her, it was a little rough there in the beginning, but we developed a friendship that was really Page 6 EXIT ZERO May8-May 21, 2014

nice. I think the most amusing story is the first year I worked with her, we were putting together the line-up for the parade, which had to be mailed out. Charlotte was not one for computers, so when she said we were going to cut and paste the entries, she literally meant we were going to cut and paste each entry to create the line-up. It was color-coded so she could see where the bands would be, where the fire engines would be and where the churches would be. So we it did that way the first year and the next year I said, ‘Charlotte, we’re moving into the 20th century. We’re going to cut and paste, but we’re going to do it on the computer.’ ” Mayor Kaithern said there will be many more Christmas parades because “the written guide that she provided to me, and all the time and energy that her children and grandchildren have put into the parade” have made it possible to gather the information necessary to ensure the “parade will continue not just in the next few years, but in perpetuity. Her legacy will live on with the parade.” Jeanette said that as flamboyant as her mother was when

it came to the Christmas parade, she was, in everyday life, “a very private person” who was devoted to her family. But in the sense of helping others and helping her community, she was the Parade Lady every day, not just on the first Saturday of every December. Charlotte served as city clerk, tax collector, court clerk and water and sewer collections. Jeanette remembered that many times her mother would come home from work and make a call to someone who had a problem — just to make sure everything was all right. “The Christmas parade was very much mom,” said Jeanette. “The parade was very personal. It had her touch. For the family, the parade was our biggest celebration in that sense because we spent so much time getting ready for it. Back then my mom hand-painted all the banners. We still do the boutonnières. We did the signs for each car. I was so proud of my mom and what she accomplished without taxpayer money. “In the beginning we used to go from business to business and collect the money with my kids in my Mustang, me and Dot Burton or me and mom. We’d put coffee cans out. Mom

DAILY, THE PARADE LADY

would wrap them up with this nice wrapper that would tell them about the parade. The night before, we’d collect the cans so that we could buy hot chocolate for the people in the parade. People in the community knew us. It had that small town feel to it and still does.” When asked if the parade overshadowed the celebration of Christmas for the family, Jeanette said, “We didn’t have much money, but we were so excited about Christmas. That’s when got the things we really wanted. Growing up, it was just us — the five kids, my mom and dad and my grandmother, who lived upstairs. We loved Christmas because it was about Christ. We loved the parade because it was about Santa Claus.” West Cape May resident Bill Briggs lives along the parade route. His parade parties are legendary — last year 250 people signed his guest book. Bill said the thing he will miss most is not seeing The Parade Lady at the fund raisers for the event. “She was always sitting at the front table as you walk in like, “Here I am again folks. I know I’m taking your money, but I love it.’ I’ll miss not seeing her in the lead car. I think it should be

renamed The Charlotte Daily Christmas Parade.” In August, 2013 Charlotte was honored by the Cape Women’s Resource Fund at their annual Equality Day Tea for her contribution as a role model for women. In a video recorded by Henrie Washington at West Cape May Borough Hall, she is seen speaking about how she was never a “middle of the road” kind of person. No matter how many times she may have started down that road, she said, she always veered in a different direction. One thing is certain, the impact Charlotte Daily made on this small community will continue for many generations to come. Ramblings From The Editor

H

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ‘n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ave you ever heard the story of Chief Warrant Officer Edwin Joseph Hill? Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941 — Japanese bombs are dropping up and down battleship row. Seeing the carnage all around him, CWO Hill leapt into action. He dove off the USS Nevada and swam to the quays where it was docked off Ford Island. He then cut all the mooring lines so the ship would have a chance to escape and as it began steaming away, he swam after it and climbed back aboard to help defend it. The captain attempted to maneuver the Nevada around the wreckage of other ships, but it was trapped. CWO Hill began lowering the anchor to keep the ship in place when a bomb blew him off the ship. In the water, two more bombs landed, taking his life. For his actions, CWO Hill was awarded America’s top honor, the Congressional Medal of Honor. In Cape May, a memorial plaque was placed on the Washington Street Mall, due to his strong ties to the city. Unfortunately, the plaque was filled with mistakes that were never corrected. CWO Hill spent 29 years serving our country before he lost his life defending it. Surely, he deserves better than a memorial that incorrectly declares him a WWI hero and gets his birthday wrong. A new internet radio station makes its debut this week. A group of radio heads from the Cape May area could not find anything that interested them on the local radio airwaves, so they decided to start their own station. Cape Island Radio is the brainchild of Ray Crew, who hosts two programs on WCFA-LP 101.5FM, hosted

³

Friday from 6-10am. Other veterans of WCFA-LP can also be heard during other day parts: MQ Murphy, Ed McDonough, Joe Sheridan and Roy Baker. “It’s a radio station like nothing else you’ve ever heard,” Phil Pizzi told us. Check it out via your online listening device by logging on to www.capeislandradio.com. If you haven’t already, I recommend you read Susan Tischler’s comprehensive story on the late, great Charlotte Daily, aka The Parade Lady, on pages 6-7. By the time you read this, Charlotte’s funeral service will have taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Charlotte Daily Fund, c/o Sturdy Savings Bank, 701 Washington Street, Cape May, NJ 08204. Rest in peace, Charlotte. The West Cape May Christmas Parade will never be the same again, but it will be a fitting legacy to a life well lived. The Exit Zero family lost a dearly beloved member this week when our old dog Rudy passed away, at the age of 15. Thankfully his wasn’t a prolonged illness. One minute he was chasing a tennis ball in the yard, the next he was suffering another bout of laryngeal paralysis, which causes him great difficulty in breathing. After the worst of his attack was over, Rudy spent the last hour of his life in peace, while myself and Diane Stopyra, his devoted mom, told him over and over what he must already have known, given how much we spoiled him — that we loved him to bits. We hope he’s in a happy place, chasing tennis balls... and barking at landscapers and trash trucks. Ramblings contributor — Ben Miller

The format features a blend of music, including singer-songwriters, Philly artists, and tunes you probably haven’t heard for many years on commercial radio. There’s also a bright and breezy morning show that covers a wide range of local, regional and national topics, including special guests and input from listeners through their Facebook page (Cape Island Radio). The Changing Face Of Cape May Who’s New, Who’s Moved and Who’s Gone... the definitive guide to the local business landscape, by Susan Tischler

I

t’s spring. It’s been a really long winter and for those of you who have been away or just not out and about, there are loads of changes in town. Let’s take a walk. Beginning in the 500 block of the Washington Street Mall, Klothes Kove sold their building over the winter and Cotton Company has taken over the space, selling women’s and men’s clothing. Owner Karen Thompson said she wants the new store to be a store for everyone. Their other location in the 400 block of the mall will still be Lace Silhouettes, but she is adding a new shop, Signature, in place of Cotton Company, selling mostly clothing manufactured in the USA. In the Liberty Way section of the 500 block there is a new kid on the mall — El Paso Groceries, open from 8am to 9pm, selling groceries and sundries. Down by the Sea in that same section of shops is gone and, thus far, no one has moved in. Walking across to the 400 block, we can

reveal that a sale of the Pilot House, located on Decatur Street and Carpenters Lane, is imminent. We can’t tell you yet who’s taking over because the contract isn’t signed, but it sounds exciting... And while we’re on Decatur Street, we know many of you are concerned about the Merion Inn, which has not opened for the season yet. A deal with a new partner is in the works. In the 400 block of the mall, Cape May Canvas artist Scott Griswold has relocated his gallery to Ocean City on Asbury Avenue. No word as to whether or not anyone will take over the location. The building is currently for sale. The Jackson Mountain Café, owned by Mike Slawek, Sr, has been taken over by his son, Mike Jr, who also owns the Ugly Mug and Cape May Fish Market, both in the same block. Mike renamed the bar/restaurant Delaney’s, after his mother’s maiden name. Renovations will be coming at the

A sale of the Pilot House is imminent, with a deal expected to be finalized by beginning of June.

end of the year, but for now Delaney’s is operational. Mike, said, “With new ownership, we wanted a new theme ref lecting our Irish heritage. Cape May needs a true Irish pub.” Look for Irish whiskeys, Irish food offerings and, of course, Irish music. Walking over to the 300 block in 400 block on Jackson Street Louisa’s Café has changed hands. Louisa Hull and Doug

Dietsch sold their 34-year-old, 20-seat restaurant to longtime employee Will Riccio, in what we hear has been a seamless transition. He is assisted in the kitchen by his sister, Honna. Making Waves in the 300 block, next to Fralinger’s Candy Shop, is gone after many years in business and the spot has been taken over by Good Scents owner Cindy

Huf, whose new Red Oak store will specialize in women’s accessories, gifts and clothing, predominately made in the USA and/or using recycled products. Not too many changes on Carpenters Lane except to mention that Deena DiBacco is the new owner of Bliss Organic Ice Cream & Café. She purchased the business over the winter from Nicole Pense and Mike Boschen. Over in the Washington Commons shopping center there is one change. The clothing and accessories shop Go Fish has left and Beach Bling is in, specializing in jewelry and accessories. Further down at 656 Washington Street, Shore’ly Handmade has taken the space previously occupied by ReMax. Owner Sally Fleming has put together a very sweet store filled with lovely handmade things from various crafters in the area. In the B&B world, the Mainstay Inn has sold. New owners Pete and Esther Scalone took over March 24 and intend to keep this Cape May gem a B&B, with Diane Clark continuing on as innkeeper. Pete, a native Philadelphian who currently lives in MacLean, Virginia, said he wants to be more hands on than the previous owner. “No one really owns the Mainstay,” he said, “they just rent it and pass it on to the next person.” In other B&B news, Archie Kirk, owner of the Bedford Inn at 801 Stockton Avenue,

The Mainstay Inn has new owners, but are retaining the innkeeper in a smooth transition.

says contract work should begin on the historic B&B in the coming weeks. The historic home was damaged by a fire in late January and is currently closed. Archie is hoping for a possible fourth quarter reopening. Stay tuned for more details or check Archie’s blog on the Bedford Inn’s website. On the beachfront, Martini Beach is no more, replaced by M’ocean. Terry White is the new chef and our sources tell us the restaurant will be more surf than turf, hence the new name. The new menu will focus on “Pacific coastal highway cuisine” and will include a full raw bar. They will

be stocking craft beers and will have 100 wines in stock — 30 bottles $30 and under. 70 bottles $55 and up. Opening date will be sometime in May. We’ll keep you posted. The Beach House is gone from the oromenade, next to Convention Center, and Angelo’s is the new breakfast-lunch-dinner hotspot. Before we leave Cape May for the western end of the island, some changes going out of town on the Schellenger Landing area. Bruce Axelsson, longtime owner of Mayer’s Tavern, is close to a deal to sell not only the tavern, but the Captain’s Kove as well. We’re now ready to head to West Cape May or, if located on the other side of the street, WCM wannabes. Cappelletti’s Italian Deli on Perry Street has finally opened. Across the street, Amelia’s Garden Restaurant did not make it past one season and the property is currently vacant and for sale. There are always changes at West End Garage, but one major one is that the Cape May Artists’ Cooperative has left the West End for their own space few blocks up the road on Sunset Boulevard, next to Jake’s Pizza. In its place is, among other, things a new Exit Zero Gallery (cheap plug!). At the corner of Broadway and Sunset, the 7-11 convenience store is gone, much to the inconvenience of West Cape May residents. According to WCM Mayor Pam Kaithern, nothing so far is going in its

place. She said she hopes in the marketing of the property, prospective owners will keep in mind that the area is zoned for commercial with residential on top. She also added that the borough is hoping to put a mini-park in the vacant lot across between the Black Duck restaurant and the Exit Zero Store and Gallery, complete with new sidewalks. Look for those changes, hopefully, in the next six months. At 416 South Broadway, Beachside Smokehouse is gone and no word at press time about who will going in there. Ellie’s Bakery is gone from its location on Broadway. The Kidz Room, a consignment boutique specializing in, appropriately enough, kids’ clothing moved in. But never fear — Ellie’s is now sharing space with Seaside Cheese Co. Cheese and cupcakes? Can it get any better? Also in Park Storage, Brooke Dodds of Empanada Mama’s has taken over the former location of Seaside Cheese and is open for business. On Broadway, look for HomeStead Real Estate to be moving to their new digs at the old Wawa location between Jackson and Bank streets. Owner Dagmer Chew says to look for a mid-June opening of the new 4,200-square-foot office. Well, that’s all folks. If we’ve missed anything, shoot us an email and we’ll include it next time around.

TALK OF THE TOWN

The Old Fogey

Great Race Tips Tips for runners of the Great Cape May Footrace on May 10, from Kashi Davis of Cape Island Runners... Newbies: Remember the coast is a bit (sometimes a lot!) cooler than inland in spring and dress accordingly. Prepare for wind — it’s been a gusty spring and it can wear you down mentally (and physically). If it is windy, you will be psychologically ready and if it is not, enjoy your good luck! Intermediates: Short races don’t usually warrant a lot of hydration while running. To improve your time, save precious seconds by skipping the water tables and hydrate well pre- and post-race. Advanced: The course is flat and fast. There are a number of turns so pay attention to your tangents! Look ahead to decide how to run the most efficient line. A great feature is that every intersection is manned with volunteers and/or closed so you don’t have to concern yourself with traffic. — Diane Stopyra

D

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ear friends, it is time to look critically at your abdominal muscles. Beach time is coming up and the “look” (as they say in the fashion periodicals I have delivered from New York City) is for shorter shorts than we have been used to seeing lately, with lots of bare midrifts. I myself have had a peek under my vest (which is, in turn, under my elegant handstitched shirt, which resides beneath my embroidered waistcoat tucked below my frock coat) and am most displeased. Not only is there no washboard of muscle, but my torso would seem to be insulated in lard. “Skinny-fat”, my father used to call it derisively as he bent horseshoes by hand (he was not a blacksmith as such, though did like to reinforce his own masculinity and his children’s lack thereof by bending horsehoes, arm wrestling all-comers and forging swords). By that he meant that most awful of combinations: feeble and thin, but also fat. Father used to invite the objects of his derision to punch him in the stomach, to prove his own manliness and the puncher’s status as a “cissy”.

The Washington Inn the wine bar

This endless mocking of the physique he himself had genetically gifted me led to my obsession with the perfect body. I trained at the local gym until aged 18 when I engaged father in a bare-knuckle boxing match and drove him out of town. It was the only time in my life that I saw Ma D’Catur nod approvingly at. Anyhoo, I have since that day had a set of abdominals that are the envy of the Shore. I have had a six-pack, a four-pack, an eight-pack and even once a 16-pack (that requires no less than 20 hours exercise a day, and the consumption of a pint

of egg whites an hour). I admit the latter looked less like abs and more like a game of marbles under a silk handkerchief. Also, I pride myself on being able to f lex each individual abdominal independently, to the tune of “She’ll be comin’ round the mountain when she comes”. Even better, I would as my party trick ask a comely young lady to sit on my stomach and then f lex all my abdominals at once and hurl her 10 feet in the air, shrieking in delight. Of course, I will need to work on it this year, and have decided to include the whole household in my D’Catur Ab Workout program. Even Young Albert is not exempt, although he has to be careful not to over-train, as a Yorkie’s abs are close to the ground to start with, and when overly distended, lift his whole little body too high for his legs to function. Previously, when he has over-trained in this manner, he has had to forgo walking as such and locomote around by f lexing his abs in succession, a most disturbing thing to watch, like a shoebox-sized hairy caterpillar with bad attitude.

TALK OF THE TOWN

The Answer Lady

Honoring The Harbor The Harbor Fest celebration of seafood and song is coming up on June 14, and in honor of the day, here are some fun facts about Cape May’s harbor… 1. It turned 100 years old in 2013, and was a haven for rum-runners during Prohibition. 2. 1950s TV icon Sally Starr used to live in what is now South Jersey Marina. 3. Legend has it that Jimmy Buffet once offered to play at the Mid-Atlantic $500,000 Tournament’s after party, for which $45,000 is spent on booze. 4. Walter Cronkite once docked at Utsch’s Marina. 5. The Fisherman’s Memorial statue was designed by a local sixthgrade student. 6. The oldest Aqua Trails kayaker, so far, was 86. 7. In 1988, the Nature Center was slated to become a restaurant and 300-slip marina, but people campaigned for its preservation. — Diane Stopyra

Wise answers to your perplexing questions and quandaries

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I’ve been dating this man for three months. Our relationship has been very intense in a positive way and I am ready to commit to him exclusively, but I have sensed a hesitation on his part. I am not looking for a wedding ring; I just want him to call me his girlfriend when people ask him who I am. Instead he says he refers to me as “this cool chick I’m seeing.” When I finally pressed him on the point, he put his arm around me and said, “Sweetie, we’re happy. Why do we have to put a name to it?” What should I do Answer Lady? Am I asking too much? — Too Demanding Dear Too Demanding Pahleeze. Too demanding? You need to tell this guy to man up. The Answer Lady cannot figure out why nice women con-

tinue to cling to morons with a death grip and then wonder why their romance never has a fairytale ending. Here’s an idea. Pick up the phone and ask some other lucky guy out on a date. Put on your sexiest dress and go to The Boiler Room and dance with abandon. I know it’ll seem like cheating to you, but remember the words of your commitment-phobic “friend” and you... A: Will have one heck of good time; B: Might be surprised how fast your “friend” suddenly

wants to “put a name to it;” or C: Discover that there are men out there who would LOVE to call you their girlfriend. Dear Answer Lady A member of my book club has invited me to a dinner party. I like this woman and would like get to know her better, though I neglected to tell her I am a vegetarian. Should I call her or just hope the dinner has more vegetables than meat? I am very shy and do not like any kind of confrontational situations. — Embarrassed Dear Embarrassed Honesty is always the best policy. Not telling her you are a vegetarian places her in an awkward situation once the truth is unveiled. That moment would be when you start pushing the roast beef around the plate like a 12-year-old and in order to save your poor hostess from the feeling that she has just produced the worst dinner on earth, you must fess up in front of the entire dinner party. I would come to dinner armed with an hors d’oeuvre from Empanada Mama’s. My personal favorite is the Spicy Mango Avocado Dip. And that, my dear, should be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

THE BIG EXIT ZERO Q&A

EXIT 0 JAZZ FESTIVAL PRODUCER MICHAEL KLINE Interview by DIANE STOPYRA Photograph by WENDY GUILES

W

e caught up with Michael Kline, organizer of the Exit 0 International Jazz Festival, to learn a little more about the man behind the music, coming to town May 30-June 1. (For a complete list of performers, see exit0jazzfest. com.) When we talked, Michael was, appropriately enough, in the Big Easy, at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, where the above picture was taken. First, the obvious question; how is the festival going down there? We’re just now easing into it. It’s bigger and bigger every year. There are probably 150,000 people here

today. And I love how, in the midst of all of it, the heritage part of the festival is still very much alive. Almost every hour a parade goes by, and you can get swept up into it and stuck behind the band for 100 yards. What are you looking at right now? I’m in WWOZ radio tent. It’s amazing how it’s grown since I was in New Orleans. It’s the healthiest and most vibrant community radio station in the world, and they’re broadcasting this culture all over the world. Let’s back up; where are you from? Reading, Pennsylvania. When did you come to Cape May? We were one of those families who came down every week in the summer, and then I moved here after college in ’92. What college? Albright.

To study? English. I was going to be an English teacher and a basketball coach. What happened? I got sidetracked. Life. How long were you in Cape May? Nine years. Doing what? I ran a men’s clothing store and worked at in the kitchen of the old bar, the Shire. Didn’t Pat Martino play there at that time? At least five or six times in the summer. At that point, he was relearning how to play music again after an accident, so he played under an alias. It was an amazing venue. What happened after Cape May? I had been in New Orleans for a couple of winters and fallen in love with the music, the food, the whole culture down there, so I just decided to make the move. It just felt like where I really wanted to be. I started out at WWOZ radio which helped immerse me into May 8-May 21, 2014 EXIT ZERO Page 65

THE EXIT ZERO Q&A From Page 65 the culture really quickly. What did you do there? I volunteered on air, three jazz shifts a week. And I kind of created my own job running the underwriting and sponsorship department. I remember something about you losing all of your records? When I moved, I made a stupid decision. I drove down with three guys from Cape May, and they were shipping some things, so I decided in order to make more room in my car, I would ship my collection of records and turntables, and yeah, very few of them actually made it. What came next? Then I became a booking agent for the trumpeter Terence Blanchard with Burgess Management, and eventually Ivan Lins, Charlie Haden, Lizz Wright, Kenny Garrett, Robert Glasper and other jazz musicians. Fill us in on some celebrity trivia. I met Ray Charles once and about three days later I was at another festival altogether and he remembered my name. He had met me once; his memory was crazy. And Irma Thomas, who is the Aretha Franklin of New Orleans, she is a great bowler. She bowls every Wednesday. Tell us about your experience with Hurricane Katrina. I woke up the Saturday morning before the storm, which hit

Page 66 EXIT ZERO May8-May 21, 2014

“I woke up the Saturday morning before Katrina... It got to a point where I had this sinking feeling in my stomach. My son Miles was 10, and we decided we would leave for Cape May. We were in Cape May on Sunday and by that Wednesday he was enrolled in school here.” on a Monday, and my buddy next door said, ‘What you going to do?’ I said, ‘What do you mean?’ — up until that point we hadn’t been paying much attention — and he told me he was leaving for Austin. For the next three or four hours, we were glued to the TV, and it got to a point where I had this sinking feeling in my stomach. I had not evacuated for a bunch of hurricane, but this one… you just knew. My son Miles was 10 then, and we decided we would leave for Cape May. I told him to pick one thing to pack. Which was what? His Playstation. And you brought? Just one suitcase of clothes.

Was your house destroyed? I had no way of knowing it at the time, but my street didn’t actually get water — about a block and a half away the homes had three-and-a-half feet of water. And Miles’ school was under 15 feet. We were in Cape May on Sunday, and by that Wednesday he was enrolled in school in Cape May. Tell me about your booking company. In 2006 I launched Michael Kline Artists. It’s a boutique international booking agency. I usually have between eight to 10 artists, mostly jazz and some world musicians — some emerging and some really established. Name some. Ivan Lins is one of the greatest Brazilian composers of all time. Charlie Haden is a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master. Nicholas Payton is one of the best jazz trumpeters in the world. I imagine you travel a lot? I’ve been really lucky. I’ve been to just about every jazz festival in Asia. I’ve been all over South America, South Korea, Europe. Wildest travel story? Well, there are a few I CAN’T tell you. If I had a quarter for every time I heard that in an interview. C’mon now! I will tell you that I loved f lying into Brazil the first time. It was breathtaking. And there was another time f lying into northern Norway

on a little thirty-footer. It was like landing on the moon — nothing but rock, mountain and water with a little dot of a city. It’s brilliant. But one of my fondest memories is being in Milan in this incredible cheese shop six days before Christmas. The owner was enchanted with New Orleans so when he found out that’s where I lived, we talked for the next four hours. He laid out an incredible spread of bread and cheese and prosciutto. I loved that. Random question — what were you like as a kid? Are people who knew you then surprised by what you’re doing now? Oh, I was a jock. Basketball. Twelve hours every day. But I think if people are surprised, it’s not by what I’m doing, but by the level of production. Is there an act you are most excited to see at the Cape May spring jazz festival? Well, I booked them, so I’m excited to see all of them! But I am looking forward to seeing how Cape May reacts to Red Baraat. They’re an eight-piece band from Brooklyn and their sound is a mixture of jazz, hip-hop, brass, and funk. I think they’re going to bring the house down in Cabanas. Anything else you would like people to know about the festival? How important our team is. Even the volunteers are pulling 16-hour days. It’s humbling to see that.

DID YOU KNOW...

The Movie Column

Electrical Problem Those three large pergolas on the Washington Street Mall were not part of the original designs for the 2008 renovation and if city leaders and mall merchants had their way, they would not exist. Those pergolas may look pretty and the climbing plants that are slowly covering them add ambiance, but they were built to hide electrical transformers that power the block. When the mall was first created in the 1970s by Mayor Frank Gauvry’s administration, the transformers were a necessary evil. By 2008, they were outdated and much larger than necessary. The plan was to either remove them or relocate them off the mall. Unfortunately, Atlantic City Electric told the city that unless it paid $1.5 million dollars to move them, they weren’t going anywhere. Considering the entire mall renovation cost $3.5 million itself, the city had no real choice. — Ben Miller

t’s night when Ivan Locke, played by Tom Hardy, gets into his BMW in Birmingham, England and heads to London. Soon, he starts using his dashboard Bluetooth to connect to the outside world. Locke is known for his ability to pour cement, and the biggest “pour” of his life is happening the next day, and here he is, leaving town. Although his boss fires him, Locke still tries to calmly walk his assistant through all the steps necessary for a good “pour.” Meanwhile, he explains to his wife why he’s not coming home that night. He keeps assuring another woman that he’s on his way. This appears to be the year of oneactor-dominated films — see Sandra Bullock in Gravity and Robert Redford in All is Lost — and as with these films, in the hands of a lesser talent, Locke wouldn’t work. Hardy, star of Inception and The Dark Night Rises, creates a believable character going through a crisis as he navigates the car and the ever-flowing conversations. Credit, too, must be given to the actors whose voices create whole characters, par-

Tom Hardy very capably handles the solitary role in Locke, an atypical cinematic experience.

ticularly Andrew Scott (Moriarty on BBC’s Sherlock), Ruth Wilson, and Olivia Colman. Known mostly as co-creator of Who Wants to be a Millionaire in the UK and screenwriter for Amazing Grace and other films, Steve Knight wrote and directed Locke. When the camera leaves Locke to wander the busy roadways, it’s mesmerizing, and one begins to wonder how many other scenes are being played out in other cars

on these “arteries” of life. Those who know their philosophers will figure that the name Ivan Locke is a nod to John Locke (16341704) who believed that all knowledge comes exclusively through experience, and through this, truth is discovered. One can debate if Ivan Locke behaved responsibly — or not. Regardless, Ivan believes he’s being true to himself and everyone around him. At the screening in NYC, Knight and Hardy were on hand for a Q&A. The film was shot in eight nights. Hardy used cue cards, although you’d never know it. He explained that he thought of himself as a captain of a ship, and decided a Welsh accent was the one to use. He evoked the rhythms of Richard Burton, and this served him well. During shooting, the actors on the phone were in a nearby hotel, and Knight gave them different directions throughout. One night, he told Wilson, who plays Locke’s wife, that her character had been wanting to leave him, and now had the perfect excuse. These varying directions were never given to Hardy, who dealt beautifully with what he was handed.

The Decadently Delicious $25 Original Fudge Kitchen Giveaway Our roving photographer bumped into Kari and Stein Glenna, on a long vacation from Norway. To sweeten the experience, we gave them a $25 gift certificate to spend at The Original Fudge Kitchen. What brought you here? A friend that we met at a poodle dog show lives here. We had a show last week in Maryland. Is your dog a champion? No; some of the dogs win, but not ours! What’s his name? King, and we actually saw some of King’s kids and grandkids competing for the best poodle. He’s a champion in England How do you like Cape May? It’s great; it’s our second time here. I like the beautiful houses. What is your favorite type of fudge? Caramel. What else have you done here in Cape May? We took the ferry, we did the Willow Creek Winery. How warm is it in Norway? Warmer than here! The winner of our next giveaway will get a $25 gift certificate to spend at Louisa’s Chocolate Bar. INTERVIEW AND PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA... DID YOU KNOW...

The Activity Column

Streetwise The Sunset Pavilion by the Cove beach is actually built at the foot of what was once 3rd Avenue. You have likely heard the stories about South Cape May and if you’re a regular reader of Exit Zero or if you’ve read our book, The First Resort, you know all about the longgone borough of South Cape May. You might have also noticed that the last cross street on Beach Avenue before the Cove is 2nd Avenue. That’s because all the other roads have been washed away. At one time, the streets continued all the way up to 31st Avenue, which ran parallel to Lighthouse Avenue in Cape May Point. The exact location of 3rd Avenue is underneath the patio of the Cove restaurant. The walking path that leads through the meadows to Sunset Boulevard near West Drive was once 12th Avenue and the concrete bunker stands at around 26th Avenue. — Ben Miller

Get out there, and activate your fountain of youth. By Catherine Dugan

F

or thousands of years, mankind has sought the fountain of youth, a healing water source which could restore youth to all who bathed in it or drank from it. Herodotus wrote of such a spring in 5BC. Alexander the Great reportedly sought a restorative river in the Middle East. Spanish sailors in the 16th century heard tales from the natives of the Caribbean, leading many to claim that Ponce de Leon was in search of the fountain of youth when he sailed for Florida. Similar tales crop up in the folklore of Japan, Polynesia and the Canary Islands. During the Victorian era, patent medicine makers hawked miracle youth potions, and the idea that vigorous exercise could restore vitality gained traction. Modern scientists are turning to a woman of the Victorian age for clues about longevity. They are examining the blood of Hendrikje van Andel-Schipper, born in 1890, when Queen Victoria still had another decade on the throne, to see why she enjoyed good physical and mental health until 2005. The search for the

fountain of youth goes on. Create your own fountain of youth with a visit to Cape May. Get up early, as you did when you were six, and greet the birds. Take a walk to Cape May’s Kiwanis Park on Madison Avenue and play. Pump your legs on the swings until you are soaring, climb a tree, and dribble a basketball. Fly a kite on the beach, or race the waves at the water’s edge and see if you can keep from giggling as you try to keep your chilly toes dry. Forget the fact that you’re burning calories and just have fun. Keep playing until you get really hun-

gry, and then treat yourself to lunch at the Cape May Peanut Butter Company on Carpenters Lane. It’s a child’s dream, but grown-ups also enjoy the sandwiches, nut butters, cake and cookies. Get some bubbles at the Toy Shop. Buy a teddy bear for someone you love — Cape May Teddy Bears are now for sale at the Carriage House Gallery. Revisit your favorite childhood books as The Garden Club of Cape May presents A Magical Garden of Children’s Stories, on Friday May 16, from 12:30-7pm at Convention Hall. The f loral arrangements recreate The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and other stories. Admission is free and there is a “lively marketplace.” On May 17, compete in the Clam-a-Rama clamshell pitching tournament on the beach in front of the Rusty Nail. The $25 registration fee includes a 2014 tee shirt. Register in advance by calling (609) 884-6583. Let someone tell you a bedtime story. Check out Temple of the Skulls at Elaine’s. Cape May Stage opens the season on May 22 with The Mountaintop, running through June 13. Sleep like a baby.

Spring Forum for Your Local Economy!

FROM GLOBAL TO LOCAL: “Bringing It All Back Home” Friday, May 9: 8:30am & Saturday, May 10: 8:30am Cape May Lewes Ferry Terminal Authors & Entrepreneurs Judy Wicks & Pam Dorr Join the Day A nod and thanks go to Bob Dylan for the 2014 title for the Spring Forum. “Bringing it all Back Home” is the title of Dylan’s 1964 breakthrough album, when in a small town called Woodstock, NY he “brought it all back home” by rediscovering his folk roots, in order to invent and hone his future sound. It fits.

How do we build a strong, local and living economy? That’s the question keeping the folks at the Cape May Forum up at night. FROM GLOBAL TO LOCAL: “BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME includes a workshop, lectures, panels and debate, all around the know-how and right moves for building strong local business, and a sustainable local economy. CMF will bring in the experts to share their experiences in solving this community challenge. • FRIDAY, MAY 9 from 8:30am to 2:45pm Full-day Workshop for the County’s entrepreneurs. Starting a business? Own a business? Sessions focus on product, market, and economics – how to nurture your product and get it to the right audience, without breaking the bank. Experts, exercises, dialogue and lunch. Friday’s speakers are Diane Holtaway, Associate Director of Client Services at the Rutgers Food Innovation Center, Joe Molineaux, Director Small Business Development Center at Richard Stockton College (SBDC at Stockton,) and Geoff Pettifer, Director of Marketing Communications at Richard Stockton College and Founder of the firm Creative Bone Marketing and Design. • SATURDAY, MAY 10 from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm Sessions focus on the “Big Picture” – how healthy local businesses contribute to a sustainable local economy. How can a community come together to be successful? Saturday’s speakers have been instrumental in building healthy economies – and they are entertaining, too. Lunch included. Judy Wicks, founder of the White Dog Café in Philadelphia is an entrepreneur, author, speaker and mentor working to build a more compassionate, environmentally-sustainable and locally-based economy. Her memoir Good Morning, Beautiful Business: the Unexpected Journey of an Activist Entrepreneur and Local Economy Pioneer was published in March 2013. Pam Dorr is executive director of Hale Empowerment Revitalization Organization (HERO) a grass-roots non-profit organization, which creates local development opportunities that celebrate the community. Dorr is an entrepreneur who turned a town around and will talk about her success in “Going Local.” • LOCAL FOOD FARE & TASTING EVENT Locally grown, harvested and made is the theme as County vendors come together to show their wares – giving folks a taste of some of Cape May’s unique bounty. Saturday’s attendees will browse the Local Food Fare & Tasting Event during Saturday’s extended Lunch Break and following the Program finish.

Î Tango was found playing on the Parkway with his friend Pebbles. He’s been to the shelter before, but still finds it a bit intimidating. Î Tango is a playful little guy who misses playing with the children he used to live with. He’s very sociable with other dogs and an allaround lovebug. ADORABLE ANIMALS FROM OUR LOCAL SHELTER AND ADOPTION CENTER Î Cloudy loves kids — he used to live with a family of five but was sent to the shelter because the family fell on hard times and could no longer afford to look after him. Î He’s not a fan of cats but would likely be okay if he was introduced to other dogs, having once lived with a smaller dog. Î If you’d like to meet this affectionate guy, call Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center on 609-465-8923.

irds. They are part of the human landscape. You’ll find their images fired into fine china and stitched onto football jerseys. Birds are routinely mentioned in poetry and pop song tracts... “Blackbird singing in the dead of night...” “Just like a white-winged dove...” The bible is replete with bird references. And why not? The Holy Land is where three continents come together. Israel is as birdrich as Cape May and while you, personally, may never travel to Eilat or the Hula Valley to watch birds. In Cape May you need not travel farther than your backyard to enjoy world-class birding. This is particularly true in May. And it has never been truer than this May, as New Jersey Audubon’s Cape May Bird Observatory rolls out its Cape Maygration celebration — a month-long focus on introducing residents and visitors to the simple, passive wonder of birds. Collect all 426 species found in Cape May and win a lifetime of discovery and wonders. That’s a good downpayment on the

With more than 100 years of service under their belts, or trunks as the case may be, the Cape May Beach Patrol continues to maintain a perfect record of saving swimmers’ lives while they are on duty. There have been many close calls and situations beyond their control, like military ordinance washing up on the beach, a US Coast Guard plane that crashed into the water in 1935 or a US Marines helicopter that crashed off the Cove ceach in 1982. But when it comes to bathers, the beach patrol has it covered. The organization was founded in 1911 after the city decided to provide lifesaving services on the beach. Prior to that, hotels employed their own lifeguards and beaches in front of private homes. Today, the CMBP maintains a force of 70 guards in season, to ensure that on any given day, at least 55 of them will be available to keep Cape May’s beaches safe. — Ben Miller

10,000 birds apportioned across the planet. No one has ever seen them all. If you tried, you’d travel to some of the planet’s greatest ecotourist destinations... the Amazon Basin, Antarctica, Kenya. But if you’d prefer to just stay in Cape May, that’s fine, too. Your chances of seeing gentoo penguin are considerably reduced, but you’ll save booking cost on a cruise ship. What’s more, birds in Cape May do everything penguins do — and more. Penguins, after all, cannot fly. All of the bird species native to Cape May are capable of fligh and some species, like

red knot, fly almost 10,000 miles every year. As a Cape May visitor or resident you can sit back and wait for the birds to come to you. I’m lying just a little. To see different species you’ll need to go to different habitats. Luckily the folks at Cape May Bird Observatory have planned out a month-long field trip schedule. You don’t need to pre-register. All you need to do is show up at the appointed place and time and let the leaders do the rest. Is there a fee? Yes — $10 for nonmembers, or about $13,990 less than an Antarctic cruise. After you’ve seen all Cape May’s spring bird migrants you’ll have one month to compile your sighting before birds start migrating south again in late June. Don’t worry CMBO will be offering field taps in June, July and August, too. It’s just that May is a spectacular month for birding even by Cape May standards. To see how spectacular visit birdcapemay.org. Click on bird checklist. Or stop by the Northwood Center 707 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point and pick up a free bird checklist and a Kestrel Express program schedule for Cape Maygration events.

WE NEED YOUR HELP... become one of “GEORGE’S ANGELS!” 3rd Annual George Mesterhazy Tribute Concert “With Strings Attached” presented by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities Sunday, June 8, 2014 - 8pm | Cape May Convention Hall

Marie, Laura, Annette

G

EORGE MESTERHAZY HAD DREAMED of adding string arrangements to his favorite jazz standards in his annual MAC Music Festival concert. George’s musical colleagues hope to make his dream a reality this year, but need your help to raise the additional funds. By special arrangement with MAC, all donations from “George’s Angels”--including ticket pre-sales for this concert--will be earmarked for the additional costs of adding a string section. You can become one of “George’s Angels” by purchasing your $25 concert ticket in advance by calling MAC at 609-884-5404 (dial “O”) and asking to be one of George’s Angels, or going to www.capemaymac.org website and clicking the special “DONATE NOW” button under the description of the June 8 George Mesterhazy Tribute Concert. All of George’s Angels will be invited to the pre-concert rehearsal and a complimentary brunch at Convention Hall. If you donate $100 or more you’ll receive 4 concert tickets, plus an invitation to the post-concert celebration where you will mingle with the concert artists and fellow Angels. If you are able to become an uber-Angel and donate more than $100, you’ll receive all of the above plus special recognition in the concert program, and additional commemorative items, not to mention the musicians’ most sincere thanks. Please become one of George’s Angels today to ensure funding to make George’s dream come true!

This concert will be an evening of selections from the Great American Songbook, under the direction of Barry Miles, with original orchestrations and arrangements performed by some of George’s favorite colleagues: Joe Barrett, Paula Johns, Paul Jost, Tim Lekan, Barry Miles, David O’Rourke, Al Rinaldi, Dean Schneider and Bob Shomo with additional orchestral musicians.

Please call 609-884-5404 or visit capemaymac.org for details! Page 102 EXIT ZERO May8-May 21, 2014

The evening ended with everyone joining hands and singing “Let There Be Peace On Earth,” played by the Cape May County String Band.

Lower Cape May Regional High School Student Of The Week

his week, we sat down with one of Lower Cape May Regional’s recent game-winning heroes, Logan Walter. Logan, who resides in the Villas, is a twoyear returning varsity lacrosse player who anticipates continuing the sport in college. In the meantime, she maintains exceptional grades in order to benefit her future. How long have you been playing lacrosse? Since my freshman year — this is my second year on varsity. What made you want to join the lacrosse team? My friend Kylie Gorbsky played on a recreational league for the community and she always told me how much she liked the sport. Once I entered high school I figured I would join the team. What is your position? I am a home. My responsibilities are to get the ball and score. Recently, you managed to score the game winning goal in your game against Millville; how did that feel? Considering we were missing half of our varsity line-up during this game due to spring

break, everyone knew they had to step up their game. We were up in the beginning by four, then come half time, Millville caught up, putting us behind them. Once we started to catch up, I think the whole

team realized that we could actually win. When my teammate Madie Gibson assisted my goal, I think it pumped up the whole team and gave us more confidence. That led us into overtime, and I

scored the winning goal in the six minutes we played. The final score was 14-13. The feeling was awesome and my team was extremely proud of me. What other activities are you involved in at LCMR? I play field hockey in the fall, and in the winter I play indoor field hockey in Ocean City and indoor lacrosse in Egg Harbor Township. Which sport do you enjoy more: lacrosse or field hockey? I would have to say lacrosse simply because the team has a great bond; we’re like a family. I also like the pace of lacrosse; it’s a lot faster and keeps the fans and players on their toes. What are your future plans? I plan on going to college — I would like to either stay in New Jersey or go down south to one of the Carolinas. I really enjoy Mr Hickman’s Law Enforcement class, which I have taken for two years. I hope to major in that, with possibly a minor in TV Media. Would you like to play lacrosse or field hockey at the collegiate level? I think it would be a great experience to play lacrosse at the varsity level wherever I go to school.
